- 0:00At 7:52 on Christmas Eve, Monica Stone
- 0:03stood at the top of the Aldridge Hotel's
- 0:05grand staircase, 34 weeks pregnant, and
- 0:07watched her husband walk through the
- 0:09revolving door with Brianna Clark's hand
- 0:11tucked into his arm. Below her, 300
- 0:14guests had come to a charity gala for
- 0:15the Harbor Children's Fund. A 40ft tree
- 0:18stood in the center of the lobby, strung
- 0:20with 11,000 white lights. A string
- 0:22quartet played near the check-in desk.
- 0:24Snow fell past the tall windows, and the
- 0:27marble floor gave back every candle in
- 0:28the room. It was an expensive room built
- 0:31to make everyone in it look forgiven. If
- 0:33you've got a moment, drop the name of
- 0:35your town in the comments. I read them
- 0:37all and I love seeing where you are.
- 0:39Brianna was Patrick's executive
- 0:41assistant. She was 27 and she had been
- 0:43on the payroll 14 months. Tonight, she
- 0:46wore a black satin dress with thin
- 0:47straps and her dark hair was pinned up
- 0:49with a single comb. Patrick's palm
- 0:52rested at the small of her back. A boss
- 0:54does not touch an employee that way. He
- 0:56touches her that way only if he has done
- 0:57it before in private many times. Monica
- 1:00put a hand on her belly. Her daughter
- 1:02shifted under the dusty rose silk one
- 1:04slow roll from left to right. Monica
- 1:06waited for the pain to come. It came a
- 1:08few seconds late, which is how it
- 1:09usually works. She had been collecting
- 1:12small things for 4 months. Patrick
- 1:14showering the minute he got home. A new
- 1:17passcode on the phone that used to
- 1:18charge beside their bed. two prenatal
- 1:20appointments at 28 weeks and 31 replaced
- 1:23by port meetings that appeared on no
- 1:25Barnes group calendar. A long dark hair
- 1:27on the shoulder of a coat she had taken
- 1:29to the cleaner herself. Suspicion had
- 1:31been cruel, but it had also left a door
- 1:33open. Maybe there was an explanation.
- 1:35The way Patrick looked at Brianna closed
- 1:37it. The lobby went quiet in patches. The
- 1:40hotel's general manager studied the
- 1:42floor. Judge Harmon's wife lowered her
- 1:44champagne glass an inch. They knew or
- 1:46knew enough. You can always tell when a
- 1:48room has been waiting longer than you
- 1:50have. Patrick found her at the foot of
- 1:52the stairs. His hand left Brianna's
- 1:54back. For half a second, something like
- 1:56shame crossed his face. Then it
- 1:58disappeared behind the calm that had
- 2:00made city officials return his calls for
- 2:0211 years. Patrick Stone ran the Stone
- 2:04family's waterfront holdings, and the
- 2:07family's name had once been enough to
- 2:08settle a dispute without paperwork.
- 2:11Monica, you came. I live with you. He
- 2:15glanced at Brianna. She's here for the
- 2:17press. The son is asking about the
- 2:18federal review of the Pier 9 contracts.
- 2:21Is that why her coat is on your arm?
- 2:24Brianna looked at the floor. Patrick did
- 2:25not. Not here. You brought her here. His
- 2:29jaw tightened. Tonight matters more than
- 2:31us. Monica almost smiled. That's the
- 2:34first accurate thing you've said in 4
- 2:36months. He heard something in her voice
- 2:38then. It was not grief and it was not
- 2:40anger. It was a level tone the kind a
- 2:42person uses to read out a balance. What
- 2:44did you do? Walk me to the mezzanine
- 2:46library, she said. Smile while you do
- 2:49it. People are watching. Monica, at 9:30
- 2:52tonight, a man on a harbor lift is going
- 2:55to shoot you on the terrace. The people
- 2:56who hired him need me out of the
- 2:58building before then or standing beside
- 3:00you when it happens. Brianna comes too.
- 3:03Brianna's head came up. Patrick looked
- 3:05at his wife the way you look at a
- 3:07stranger who has said your name
- 3:08correctly. Then the husband went away
- 3:10and the boss came back. His eyes
- 3:12measured the doors, the balconies, the
- 3:14waiters, the reflections in the glass.
- 3:16He did not argue. He offered Monica his
- 3:19arm. Take it, she walked ahead of him,
- 3:21up the stairs, one hand on the rail,
- 3:22counting steps. There were 22. The
- 3:25library on the mezzanine had one door to
- 3:27the corridor and one to the service
- 3:29stair. Its windows faced the courtyard
- 3:31instead of the harbor. Monica had chosen
- 3:33it on Tuesday along with the time. Three
- 3:36people were waiting. Wendy Harris,
- 3:38Monica's attorney for nine years, sat at
- 3:40the long table with a laptop and a
- 3:42leather folder. Roy Bennett, Patrick's
- 3:44head of security for 19 years, stood by
- 3:46the service door with his arms folded
- 3:48and a scar under his chin. The third was
- 3:50a woman in a gray suit with her hair
- 3:52pulled back and a federal ID clipped to
- 3:54her belt. "Special agent Robin Fischer,"
- 3:57the woman said. "Baltimore field office.
- 3:59I have 11 agents in this building, a
- 4:01tactical team in the harbor place garage
- 4:03and a very short time." Patrick turned
- 4:05to his wife. You went to the FBI Tuesday
- 4:08morning at 10:15. You had no right to
- 4:11bring federal agents into my family. I
- 4:14had every right. I'm one of the people
- 4:16on the list. She laid a single sheet of
- 4:18paper on the table. Wendy slid a second
- 4:20one beside it. Monica had spent 6 years
- 4:23as a forensic accountant for the state
- 4:25controller before she married, and she
- 4:27still read a ledger the way other people
- 4:28read faces. Franklin Marine Services,
- 4:31she said. Three invoices paid out of the
- 4:33Pier 9 maintenance account between
- 4:35October 19th and December 12th. The
- 4:38first is for crowd control consulting.
- 4:40Second is for aerial lift rental Pier 9
- 4:42terrace December 24 98 to 10 p.m. The
- 4:45third is for vehicle service. Together
- 4:47they come to $310,000.
- 4:51Patrick read the first line. That's a
- 4:53maintenance vendor. Franklin has no
- 4:55trucks, no state license, and a mailbox
- 4:57in Delaware. It was incorporated 11 days
- 5:00before the first invoice. Someone
- 5:02approved all three through the executive
- 5:03operations code. Who has that code?
- 5:06Fischer asked. Roy answered before
- 5:08Patrick could. Mr. Stone Me for security
- 5:11items and Carl Watkins. The name sat in
- 5:13the room for a moment. Carl Watkins was
- 5:1666 years old. Patrick's late father's
- 5:18attorney and the man who had taught
- 5:20Patrick how to tie a tie, how to read a
- 5:22contract, and how to wait. He sat on the
- 5:24board of Barnes Group. He had been at
- 5:26the hospital the night Patrick's father
- 5:27died. He called Patrick's son and
- 5:30Patrick had never corrected him. No,
- 5:32Patrick said. The voting trust, Monica
- 5:35said. He closed his mouth. In October,
- 5:38you signed an amendment. When our
- 5:40daughter is born, the family trust
- 5:42dissolves and control of her share
- 5:43passes to me as trustee. Carl has run
- 5:46that trust for 15 years. He gives it up
- 5:48at birth. If you and I both die before
- 5:49she's born, nothing changes. He stays.
- 5:52And you announce the Pier 9 audit 6
- 5:54weeks before the first Franklin payment
- 5:56cleared. Carl would not. A week ago, I'd
- 6:01have said you wouldn't bring your
- 6:02assistant to a Christmas gala. Patrick
- 6:04flinched. Roy looked at the ceiling.
- 6:07Fischer spoke again. Mrs. Stone brought
- 6:09us the invoices. We confirmed the lift.
- 6:12It was delivered to the Pier 9 service
- 6:14yard at 4:40 this afternoon and is
- 6:16staged under the terrace. A man in a
- 6:18harbor maintenance jacket has been
- 6:19working on it for 3 hours. We have not
- 6:21touched him. Why not? Patrick said.
- 6:25Because a man on a lift is a gunman. a
- 6:27text on his phone from the person who
- 6:28hired him is a conspiracy case. Brianna
- 6:31had not spoken since the lobby. She
- 6:33stood near the bookshelf with her arms
- 6:35wrapped around herself. When Monica
- 6:37turned to her, she stepped forward as
- 6:39though she had been called to a desk. 3
- 6:41weeks ago, Brianna said, "Mr. Watkins
- 6:44asked me to move the toast to the
- 6:45terrace. He said the son wanted harbor
- 6:47photographs. I changed the run of show.
- 6:49He asked me to send him Patrick's
- 6:51arrival time and route, and I did. He
- 6:53asked about the car, and I told him
- 6:55about the car." Her voice shook once and
- 6:56steadied. I sent him Mrs. Stone's
- 6:58schedule, too. He said he wanted to make
- 7:00sure she wasn't overtaxed. Did he know
- 7:03about the two of you? Monica asked. He
- 7:06told me to bring her. Brianna looked at
- 7:08Patrick. Tonight, Mr. Watkins said that
- 7:10if you walked in together, the board
- 7:12would finally see you as unattached. He
- 7:14said it would be kinder to Mrs. Stone to
- 7:16stop pretending. He said you were going
- 7:18to leave her after the baby anyway.
- 7:20Patrick said, "I never told him that.
- 7:23You told me the marriage was over. I
- 7:25said it was strained. Monica kept her
- 7:28eyes on Brianna. How many times did he
- 7:30ask about my appointments?
- 7:33Four. Which ones? The 28-week visit, the
- 7:3731 week. And he asked whether you'd be
- 7:40on your feet all night tonight. Monica
- 7:42did the arithmetic out loud because it
- 7:44was cleaner than the alternative. A
- 7:46woman who finds out about an affair in
- 7:48front of 300 people is under stress. A
- 7:50woman at 34 weeks under stress goes to a
- 7:53hospital. A woman in a hospital is not
- 7:55at the terrace. She looked at Patrick.
- 7:57He didn't just use the affair. He
- 7:59arranged it so I would be in a bed when
- 8:01the shooting started. Patrick's face
- 8:03went white. He knew you were pregnant.
- 8:06He knew exactly how far along. The only
- 8:09sound was the quartet muffled one floor
- 8:11down. Then there was a knock. Three
- 8:13wraps patient and polite. Royy's hand
- 8:15went under his jacket. Fischer looked at
- 8:17Monica and gave one small nod. Carl
- 8:20Watkins opened the door himself. He wore
- 8:22a gray tuxedo and a silver pocket
- 8:24square, and his white hair was combed
- 8:25back the way it had been combed for 50
- 8:27years. He looked at the table, at
- 8:29Patrick, at Brianna, at the paper under
- 8:31Wendy's hand. He did not look at the
- 8:33federal ID on Fisher's belt, and that
- 8:35was how Monica knew he had seen it.
- 8:37Patrick, the mayor is asking for you.
- 8:39His eyes moved to Monica. They were
- 8:41kind. They were always kind. And you,
- 8:43sweetheart, should be sitting down. You
- 8:45look pale. I'm tired, Uncle Carl.
- 8:47Patrick is taking me home. Of course, he
- 8:50smiled. The terrace can wait. We'll make
- 8:52the toast at 9:30 as planned, and you'll
- 8:54both be tucked in by 10:00. Of course,
- 8:57Monica said. He lingered 1 second longer
- 9:00than a man should. Then he closed the
- 9:02door, and his footsteps went away down
- 9:04the corridor at the same unhurried pace.
- 9:07Fischer exhaled. He counted the room. He
- 9:09counted the exits, Roy said. I watched
- 9:11him. At 9:02, Fischer's radio gave two
- 9:15clicks. A team had taken the man on the
- 9:17lift without a sound. They found a long
- 9:19rifle in a toolbox under a tarp and a
- 9:20burner phone in his jacket. The phone's
- 9:23last message was from a number that had
- 9:24been active for 9 days. It said, "Wait
- 9:26for the word." Before the rest of this
- 9:29story, let me turn it over to you for a
- 9:30second. Staying true to one person for a
- 9:33lifetime is no small thing these days.
- 9:35If you've been married a long while,
- 9:37what kept the two of you loyal to each
- 9:39other? Fisher's people cloned the
- 9:41handset in 4 minutes. Now, the word
- 9:43could be read before it was sent. Here
- 9:45is the plan, Fischer said. Mr. Mr.
- 9:47Watkins expects a shot at 9:30. At 9:29,
- 9:50he'll text the lift. We hold the lift.
- 9:52When he sends it, we have him. After
- 9:53that, he'll try to leave. Where from?
- 9:56Patrick said. Wherever his driver is
- 9:59waiting. Monica looked at the invoice
- 10:01again. Her eye went to the third line
- 10:03and stopped. Vehicle service, she said.
- 10:06$18,400.
- 10:08Brianna, who drives Patrick home
- 10:10tonight? The armored Suburban. Mr.
- 10:12Watkins arranged the detail. It's at the
- 10:14North Service Dock. Dale Puit behind the
- 10:16wheel. "Mr. Watkins asked us to stage it
- 10:19there for $9.45." "$18,000 is too much
- 10:22for a car wash," Monica said. Fisher was
- 10:25already on the radio. 4 minutes later, a
- 10:27bomb technician in a dock jacket
- 10:29reported from under the Suburban.
- 10:31Something was wired to the ignition and
- 10:33taped to the frame rail where the fuel
- 10:34line ran. It was not a clean device. It
- 10:37was a poor panicked afterthought. The
- 10:39second plan of a man who suspected the
- 10:41first might fail. Patrick sat down. He
- 10:44did not seem to decide to. His legs did
- 10:45it for him. Dale drives me to church, he
- 10:48said. Every Sunday. He drove you for 6
- 10:50years, Roy said. He also drove Mr.
- 10:52Watkins. Patrick looked at his wife
- 10:55across the table. You found all this
- 10:57alone. I had Wendy. I had Robin. I had a
- 10:59calendar. She kept her voice flat. I
- 11:01also had 4 months of being told I needed
- 11:03rest. He opened his mouth. She did not
- 11:06give him the room. I'm not telling you
- 11:08this to hurt you. I'm telling you
- 11:10because you asked how. And the answer is
- 11:12that I did what I do. You encouraged me
- 11:14to stop doing it. Carl encouraged you to
- 11:16encourage me. At 9:14, the first
- 11:19tightening began low in her abdomen. She
- 11:21pressed two fingers to her wrist and
- 11:23watched the second hand of the library
- 11:24clock. It lasted 40 seconds. It did not
- 11:27hurt. Braxton Hicks, she told Fischer,
- 11:30"I'll time them. We can get you to a
- 11:32hospital." "Not until he's in
- 11:34handcuffs." Patrick stood. I'm going to
- 11:37the terrace. "No," Monica said.
- 11:41He raised me. [sighs] I know. If I
- 11:44confront him, you'll do what you've
- 11:47always done. You'll make it about you,
- 11:48and he'll watch you do it. She did not
- 11:50raise her voice. He built this entire
- 11:52night on the belief that you would chase
- 11:54something. A woman, a shot, a rumor.
- 11:57Stay in this room. Stay where you're
- 11:58useful. For a long moment, Patrick
- 12:01looked at her. He had once been a man
- 12:03who walked into rooms and rearranged
- 12:04them. Now, he stood still with both
- 12:06hands at his sides, and the stillness
- 12:08cost him visibly. All right, he said.
- 12:12Fischer gave a small surprised nod. It
- 12:14was the first time all night anyone had
- 12:16seen him take an order. Downstairs, Carl
- 12:19Watkins took the microphone at 9:21.
- 12:21Monica watched him on a screen Roy had
- 12:23wired from the ballroom camera. He
- 12:25thanked the donors by name. He mentioned
- 12:27the $1.4 million raised for pediatric
- 12:29care. He spoke of Patrick's father, of
- 12:32the harbor of family. He said he would
- 12:34ask them all in a few minutes to join
- 12:36him on the terrace to see the lights on
- 12:38the water. At 9:26, he stepped away from
- 12:41the microphone and checked his phone. At
- 12:449:27, he checked it again. At 9:29, he
- 12:47typed something with one thumb slowly
- 12:49and without hurry and pressed send. In
- 12:52the library, Fisher's tablet chimed. She
- 12:54read it aloud. Proceed. It was one word.
- 12:56It was the entire case. Move, Fisher
- 12:59said into her radio. Monica could not
- 13:01see what happened on the terrace because
- 13:03nothing happened on the terrace. The
- 13:05lift sat empty, its operator already in
- 13:07custody for almost half an hour, and the
- 13:09doors to the balcony were locked from
- 13:11inside. On the ballroom screen, she
- 13:13watched Carl look at his phone, then up,
- 13:15then at the terrace doors. For 3
- 13:17seconds, his face did something she had
- 13:19never seen it do in 15 years. It lost
- 13:21its warmth. What was underneath was
- 13:23older and planer than anything she had
- 13:25expected. It was the face of a man doing
- 13:27arithmetic. He walked toward the north
- 13:29corridor. He did not run. He had been
- 13:32calm all his life and saw no reason to
- 13:34stop now. He took his coat from the
- 13:35check girl, thanked her, and pressed a
- 13:3720 into her palm. Monica went down the
- 13:40staircase. She did it deliberately, one
- 13:42hand on the rail, one on her belly.
- 13:44Wendy a step behind her. She stopped at
- 13:46the third step from the bottom under the
- 13:48tree where the lobby was full and every
- 13:50guest could see her. Carl reached the
- 13:52revolving door at 9:38. Four agents in
- 13:55evening clothes stood on the other side
- 13:57of it. Fischer was in the middle with
- 13:59her badge held at chest level. Carl
- 14:01Watkins, she said. You're under arrest
- 14:03for conspiracy to commit murder. The
- 14:06quartet stopped. A woman near the coat
- 14:08check dropped her glass and the sound
- 14:10carried across the marble like a shot.
- 14:12Carl turned his head and found Monica on
- 14:14the stairs. He took her in. The dusty
- 14:16rose dress, the hand on the belly, the
- 14:19clean level eyes. He seemed to
- 14:20understand finally which of them had
- 14:22been doing the arithmetic. The numbers
- 14:24were mine first, he said quietly. I
- 14:27taught your husband everything he knows
- 14:28about them. That's how I found them,"
- 14:30Monica said. They took him out through
- 14:33the revolving door. The cold air pushed
- 14:35the lobby's candle flames sideways. 300
- 14:38people watched the man who had run the
- 14:40Stone family's affairs for 15 years walk
- 14:42out in handcuffs, his silver pocket
- 14:44square still perfectly folded. By
- 14:46morning, there would be a photograph. He
- 14:48would not be able to order anyone to
- 14:49bury it. At the North Dock, Dale Puit
- 14:52was already face down on the concrete
- 14:54with his hands behind his head, still
- 14:56gripping the keys to a car he had been
- 14:57told was a gift. He cried the whole
- 15:00time. He cooperated within the hour. At
- 15:0210:40, Patrick came down from the
- 15:05library. He looked 10 years older. He
- 15:07stopped a few feet from Monica. And for
- 15:09the first time that night, he did not
- 15:11reach for her. May I? No. He nodded. I
- 15:16wasn't going to ask for anything. I
- 15:17wanted to say I was wrong. Not about
- 15:19Carl, about you. Which part? All of it?
- 15:23She waited. He was not good at this. He
- 15:26had grown up in a house where an apology
- 15:27was a lease payment and he had never
- 15:29learned the trick of speaking without a
- 15:31lawyer in the room. I brought her
- 15:33because I was a coward, he said. I let
- 15:35Carl tell me it would be easier if the
- 15:37decision were made for me. I told myself
- 15:39you'd want to know. I told myself it
- 15:41would be kinder in public. It wasn't
- 15:42kinder. It was easier for me. Yes, I'll
- 15:46tell the board that all of it. I won't
- 15:48say he made me. Good. I want to be at
- 15:52the delivery. She looked at him
- 15:54steadily, the way she had looked at the
- 15:55invoices. No. His face did something
- 15:58complicated. Monica, you will not be in
- 16:01the room. Not for the birth, not for the
- 16:02first hour. You'll wait where the nurses
- 16:04tell you to wait. You don't get that,
- 16:06Patrick. You gave it away in August. He
- 16:09swallowed. Whatever argument he had
- 16:11prepared left him at once. After a
- 16:13moment, he nodded. Brianna stood a
- 16:15little apart near the foot of the tree,
- 16:17holding her own coat in both hands. She
- 16:19came forward when Monica looked at her.
- 16:22I'll give them everything, Brianna said.
- 16:23My texts, my emails with Mr. Watkins.
- 16:26I'll testify. I know you will. I didn't
- 16:30understand what he was using me for. You
- 16:32understood what you were doing for
- 16:33yourself, Monica said. That's the part
- 16:36you'll live with. Brianna's eyes filled.
- 16:38She didn't ask to be forgiven. Monica
- 16:41watched her go to Fisher's side and give
- 16:42her phone to an agent without being
- 16:44asked twice, and she felt nothing she
- 16:45could name. It was not mercy, and it was
- 16:48not triumph. It was the tired
- 16:50administrative satisfaction of a column
- 16:51that finally balanced. The contractions
- 16:54changed at 11:50. They stopped being a
- 16:56rehearsal. The nurse from the hotel's
- 16:58first aid station timed three of them at
- 17:016 minutes apart and called an ambulance
- 17:03without waiting for Monica's permission.
- 17:05At Mercy Medical, a resident checked
- 17:07her, frowned, and asked a lot of
- 17:09questions. The cervix was changing. The
- 17:11doctors gave her medication to slow
- 17:13things down and a bed on the maternity
- 17:15floor. Patrick came as far as the
- 17:17waiting room and sat down in a plastic
- 17:18chair. Her sister Holly arrived at 1:15
- 17:21in the morning in a Parker over pajama
- 17:23pants with a halfeaten granola bar in
- 17:25her fist. She sat on the edge of the bed
- 17:28and said nothing for a long while. "Is
- 17:30he outside?" Holly asked finally. "Yes."
- 17:33"Do you want him in?" "No." "Okay,"
- 17:37Holly said and took Monica's hand in
- 17:38both of hers. Hazel Stone was born at
- 17:416:03 on the morning of December 27. At
- 17:4434 weeks and 3 days, 4 lb 14 oz. She
- 17:48cried before the doctor finished lifting
- 17:49her. A thin, furious sound. The
- 17:51pediatrician checked her breathing
- 17:53twice, pronounced her small but fine,
- 17:55and carried her to the warming table.
- 17:57Holly cut the cord. Monica held her
- 17:59daughter for 11 minutes, then slept.
- 18:01Patrick met Hazel at 9:40 that morning
- 18:04through the nursery glass with a nurse
- 18:05standing beside him. He stood there for
- 18:0820 minutes without moving. When Monica
- 18:10was wheeled past, he did not step toward
- 18:12her. She noticed that she did not reward
- 18:14it. The agreement Wendy drew up ran 14
- 18:17pages. Monica would hold sole legal
- 18:19custody, and Patrick supervised
- 18:21visitation at the start with a review at
- 18:236 months. The house on Bolton Hill was
- 18:25hers. The family trust was dissolved,
- 18:27and Hazel's share went to an independent
- 18:29fiduciary instead of to anyone named
- 18:31Stone. Patrick signed on January 8th in
- 18:34Wendy's conference room without asking
- 18:35to change a word. He pleaded guilty in
- 18:38March to two counts connected to the
- 18:40Pier 9 contracts. He had fed the audit
- 18:42himself, handing over every record,
- 18:44including the ones that sank his own
- 18:46company. Barnes group went into
- 18:48receiverhip by April. The Stone name
- 18:50disappeared from the harbor signage by
- 18:51June. He was sentenced to 46 months with
- 18:54credit for cooperation and he reported
- 18:56to a federal facility in West Virginia
- 18:58on a wet Tuesday morning in September.
- 19:00Monica did not go to see him off. She
- 19:02sent a photograph of Hazel, 8 months old
- 19:04and furious over a bowl of mashed peas.
- 19:06He wrote back, "Thank you. I'm sorry.
- 19:08That's all I'll say." It was the first
- 19:11sentence he had ever sent her that asked
- 19:12for nothing. Roy Bennett resigned in
- 19:15January and took a job running security
- 19:17for Monica's new firm. Monica Stone
- 19:19Forensic opened on the third floor of a
- 19:21converted warehouse with four employees
- 19:23and a window facing the harbor. By
- 19:25summer, she had 11 clients. Two of them
- 19:27were hospitals. One was a charity that
- 19:29had been losing money to a trustee for 6
- 19:31years and had assumed it was inflation.
- 19:33Carl Watkins went to trial in November,
- 19:3511 months after the gala. The case took
- 19:389 days. Dale Puit testified. The man
- 19:40from the lift testified. Brianna Clark
- 19:42testified for 2 hours and 40 minutes,
- 19:44and the defense lawyer did not shake her
- 19:46once. The jury was out for 6 hours and
- 19:48returned with a verdict on every count.
- 19:51At sentencing, the courtroom was full.
- 19:53Carl sat at the defense table in a gray
- 19:55suit with his hands folded, his white
- 19:57hair freshly cut, his silver pocket
- 19:59square tucked in exactly as it had been
- 20:00in the lobby. Monica sat in the third
- 20:02row alone. Hazel was at home with Holly.
- 20:05It was the only day she had left her
- 20:07daughter for the whole morning. The
- 20:09judge spoke for 11 minutes. She said the
- 20:11defendant had planned the deaths of a
- 20:13man, a woman, and an unborn child for
- 20:15money and had built the plan on the
- 20:17victim's trust and a family's private
- 20:18grief. She said the defendant had shown
- 20:20no remorse. She sentenced him to 30
- 20:23years without parole. Carl did not
- 20:25react. When the baiff touched his elbow,
- 20:28he stood and turned toward the gallery
- 20:30as he always did at the end of a meeting
- 20:32to be sure he had not forgotten
- 20:33anything. His eyes found Monica. They
- 20:36held there for a moment. He was 67 years
- 20:39old. He had spent his whole life
- 20:41believing paper could be arranged to say
- 20:42what he wanted, and he was about to
- 20:44spend his last years in a room where
- 20:46nothing he said would be written down.
- 20:48"You should have stayed home,
- 20:49sweetheart," he said almost gently. "I
- 20:52did, Monica said. That's how I found
- 20:53you." The baiff led him out. The side
- 20:56door closed with a flat, ordinary click.
- 20:59Outside, the sky over Calvert Street was
- 21:01the color of old puter. A light snow had
- 21:03started, the first of the season. Monica
- 21:05stood on the courthouse steps and let it
- 21:07settle on her shoulders. Her phone
- 21:08buzzed once. It was Holly with a
- 21:11photograph of Hazel asleep on a quilt,
- 21:13one fist tucked under her chin. She
- 21:15wrote back, "Coming home." Then she
- 21:17walked down the steps and into the cold.

- 21:21and she did not look back. Sometimes a
