- 0:02Welcome back to the interior design
- 0:04playbook. Expert lessons to streamline,
- 0:06scale, and succeed. In our last lesson,
- 0:08we imported a DWG plan and started our
- 0:10interior construction drawing, the solid
- 0:12foundation of a professional drawing
- 0:13set. Today, we are moving forward with
- 0:15the next layer. We will be creating a
- 0:17furniture and finished floor plan. You
- 0:19will see how we keep the entire process
- 0:21efficient and streamlined by just using
- 0:23one tool. No more hopping between
- 0:24software, searching for furniture,
- 0:26blocks, and materials online. With
- 0:27Rayon, the platform that I've used for
- 0:29every sheet so far, you'll work smarter
- 0:31and faster in one place. So, today,
- 0:33here's what we're going to cover.
- 0:34Stylizing plans with textures, colors,
- 0:36and fonts for a polished and client
- 0:38ready finish. Furnishing in minutes
- 0:40using Rayon's 10,000 plus block library.
- 0:43Just drag, drop, and customize
- 0:44instantly. We'll organize our
- 0:46presentation with canvases, views, and
- 0:48layers, laying the groundwork for our
- 0:50complete interior design construction
- 0:51document set. By the end of this lesson,
- 0:53you'll know exactly how to go from
- 0:55technical drawings to fully styled
- 0:57presentation ready plans, all without
- 0:59leaving Rayon. Download the free drawing
- 1:00set template below to follow along. It's
- 1:02fully editable so you can adapt it to
- 1:04your own project and start building a
- 1:06scalable professional workflow for your
- 1:08own project. Let's dive in. So, to kick
- 1:10things off today, um before we dive into
- 1:12this furniture and finish plan, I do
- 1:14want to explain the difference between
- 1:16um our model space and our presentation
- 1:17space. uh what they're called canvases
- 1:20in um here in Rayon. And basically the
- 1:23difference is that on a model canvas,
- 1:25that's where you're going to be drawing.
- 1:27Um that's what where you're going to be
- 1:28doing, you know, your floor plan, your
- 1:30details, whatever. And they can be on
- 1:32one model canvas or multiple. See, we
- 1:34have multiple set up over here. And then
- 1:36your presentation canvas is where you're
- 1:38going to take those models and like
- 1:40basically dump them onto the
- 1:42presentation canvas. And then you can
- 1:43like use overrides and layers to show
- 1:46different things. So, for instance,
- 1:47these three boards right here, right?
- 1:49This is the same floor plan, but it's
- 1:51presented differently. So, we didn't
- 1:54draw this floor plan three different
- 1:55times. We're just showing different
- 1:58layers turned on on different types of
- 1:59plans. Like, so for this one, you know,
- 2:01we've got a construction plan. So, we're
- 2:02not going to be showing finishes and
- 2:04furniture. Down here, we've got
- 2:05lighting. So, we have the lighting
- 2:07turned on. Then, down here, you know, we
- 2:08took the lighting off and now we're just
- 2:10kind of showing finishes um and
- 2:12furniture. So, that hopefully kind of
- 2:14helps explain uh the model space versus
- 2:17the presentation space. And I do want to
- 2:20go ahead and set up a page with you. Uh
- 2:23we'll just do it right over here to the
- 2:24side. This should help kind of explain
- 2:26that whole layer override thing as well.
- 2:29So, let's just go into our pages over
- 2:31here and hit the plus sign. Um that's
- 2:33just going to give us a whole new sheet
- 2:34here. Uh you can move it around. You can
- 2:36see that there's like snaps and grid
- 2:38lines and stuff, so you can make it nice
- 2:39and tidy. But once we select it, we can
- 2:42go over here and tell it what size we
- 2:43want it to be. So these are just all
- 2:45very typical sizes. The other ones in
- 2:47this presentation are A3. So I'm just
- 2:49going to click A3. Uh and you can see
- 2:51that it created basically the same size
- 2:53as all these other sheets. So now that
- 2:56we have our page created here, you can
- 2:58always copy and paste your uh title
- 3:01block if you want, but I'm just going to
- 3:02show you how to basically create a new
- 3:04view on a page. So, if we go back to our
- 3:07layers panel over here, we can hit the
- 3:08plus sign, and then we're going to go to
- 3:11view, and then you can select which
- 3:12model canvas you want this view to come
- 3:14from. So, we're going to tell it floor
- 3:16plan because we're going to be creating
- 3:18a furniture and finish plan together.
- 3:21And you can see that it uh brought in
- 3:22this view. Obviously, it's a little bit
- 3:24too big for our page. So, we can scale
- 3:27that down. Um, if you have it selected,
- 3:30you can come over here and just uh give
- 3:32it an exact scale. I think since this
- 3:35was created in
- 3:37meters, this is going to be kind of an
- 3:39odd shape or odd scale. 11
- 3:43128s
- 3:44to an inch uh is going to be our scale.
- 3:47So, a more typical scale would be like
- 3:481/8 of an inch, 1/4 of an inch, um or
- 3:51even like 3/32. But, uh we're working
- 3:54with the units here. Uh, by the way, if
- 3:56you do get this uh if you do have this
- 3:58drawing template and your units are in
- 4:01meters or something that you're
- 4:02unfamiliar with, you can always go down
- 4:03here um and oh, let me move me again and
- 4:07go to length unit and go to whatever
- 4:10you're most comfortable with. I
- 4:11personally am feet and inches, so that's
- 4:13what I like to do. Um, and then it will
- 4:15change all of your units to that, which
- 4:17is really helpful. So, now we've got our
- 4:19floor plan here. Still looks a little
- 4:21bit odd. Um, what we're going to do is
- 4:23hold down our command key. Uh, I am
- 4:25working on a Mac, so it might be a
- 4:27little bit different for you. And I'm
- 4:28just going to basically bring our, uh,
- 4:31frame in a little bit because we don't
- 4:33need that much going on here. Uh, we
- 4:37want to get our legend in there
- 4:39and just kind of scrunch this until it
- 4:42looks right. I think that's looking
- 4:45okay for what we, you know, for the
- 4:47teaching purposes of this course. So now
- 4:49it, you know, fits on here, but it's
- 4:51showing way too much, right? So let's
- 4:54just pretend that we are creating a
- 4:56construction plan. So we need to turn
- 4:59some of these layers off. How I'm going
- 5:01to do that is I'm going to double click
- 5:03on this view. And you can see that
- 5:04actually now I can edit stuff. Um
- 5:07there's things that are being
- 5:08highlighted. It kind of grayed out
- 5:09everything else. You do need to be
- 5:11careful in here because if you zoom in
- 5:13and out, it will change your scale. Um
- 5:15you can uh disable that by clicking this
- 5:17little button right here. So that way if
- 5:19I zoom in and out, it's not going to
- 5:20zoom in and out on the actual uh model.
- 5:24So uh what we need to do here is since
- 5:26we already have a bunch of our layers
- 5:28set up, we need to just kind of turn
- 5:30these off, the ones that we don't want
- 5:32off. So for a construction plan, you
- 5:34most likely are not going to have light.
- 5:35So I'm going to turn that off. You most
- 5:37likely are not going to have furniture.
- 5:40Uh our areas are basically our finishes,
- 5:43so I'm going to turn those off as well.
- 5:45Everything else I think we'd probably
- 5:46have. We've got our topography, uh, the
- 5:49garden with the pool, walls, shadows,
- 5:52annotations. So, that's looking pretty
- 5:53right. So, once you get all of your
- 5:56layers set correctly here, you can see
- 5:58when I hit done, this is going to change
- 5:59over here. Right now, I'm in the layers
- 6:01of my view. But, if I hit done, now I'm
- 6:03in the layers of my presentation canvas.
- 6:05So, I didn't affect anything in the
- 6:08model space. I just am affecting the
- 6:10presentation space, like how it's being
- 6:12shown. I love that aspect of uh RAN
- 6:15because now if I wanted to create a
- 6:18furniture plan, I could basically just,
- 6:19you know, duplicate this and then turn
- 6:21my furniture layers on. So that's
- 6:22exactly, you know, what we did over
- 6:24here. So uh once you kind of mess around
- 6:28with your layers and get that all set
- 6:30up, uh your construction plan should
- 6:33start looking like this. So you, you
- 6:34know, you've got your annotations,
- 6:36you've got your walls, you've got, you
- 6:38know, some indication of what these
- 6:40spaces are. You can easily create a
- 6:43legend. Also, if we go, let's just go
- 6:46into our model space and I'll show you
- 6:47how we create that. So, if I go to my
- 6:49floor plan model space, you can see that
- 6:51we have legends already created here.
- 6:53Um, but if you wanted to create your
- 6:55own, all you have to do is just use
- 6:58basically model lines and text to do
- 7:00that. So, down here, you know, you can
- 7:02grab your rectangle if we're trying to
- 7:03kind of recreate what we have here. Just
- 7:05draw your rectangle and then, you know,
- 7:08you'd add in your text. So um space
- 7:12areas and flooring material
- 7:18hit the check mark. If you want to
- 7:19change the size obviously you would
- 7:21change that here. So maybe this is like
- 7:256 or something bigger. Um you can change
- 7:28the uh font and of course always if you
- 7:31like the style um just save that style.
- 7:34Just hit the plus button and it will if
- 7:36you rename it and then save it will save
- 7:38into your styles. Um, and then yeah,
- 7:41just kind of like rinse and repeat for
- 7:43down here. Rayon does have uh an
- 7:46advanced metadata and properties option.
- 7:48So if you are interested in exploring um
- 7:51you know a deeper method to count some
- 7:54and list your elements in your space, uh
- 7:57this is where you can add the
- 7:58information directly onto your styles,
- 8:00areas, blocks, and more. And then to
- 8:03that helps you create the tables with
- 8:05just a few clicks. Um, for this lesson,
- 8:08we're just keeping it simple and uh we
- 8:10will touch on the meta metadata
- 8:12abilities in lesson seven where we are
- 8:15going to use it to create our smart FFN
- 8:17tables. But again, feel free to just
- 8:19visit Rayon's basic tutorial series to
- 8:22learn more about metadata for the
- 8:23zoning. So, I've got a nice fresh blank
- 8:26floor plan for us to start uh sprucing
- 8:28up here. Essentially, what we're going
- 8:30to do is we're going to create zones to
- 8:33uh start making our finish plan. And
- 8:35then we will also uh use some furniture
- 8:38blocks from the library to uh create our
- 8:41furniture plan on top of that. So let's
- 8:43start by creating a couple new layers. I
- 8:46am going to create a layer over here
- 8:49called furniture and then also a layer
- 8:52called finishes. You could also call it
- 8:54zones or um areas or whatever you uh
- 8:57want. But we will also reorganize these
- 9:00here in a minute to try to uh get them
- 9:02in the right hierarchy in our layers
- 9:04group because we want to make sure that
- 9:05they're sandwiched between the right
- 9:06layers. We don't necessarily want
- 9:08finishes on top of everything because
- 9:10it's going to hide all of our
- 9:11annotations and whatnot. Um I'm going to
- 9:13make sure that I'm on the layer finishes
- 9:14and we'll just start adding our zones.
- 9:16So if I go down here to zone, you can
- 9:18see when I hover over a space um that is
- 9:21enclosed, it will let me create a zone.
- 9:24So, I'm going to just uh drop on this
- 9:27one. And you can see that it
- 9:29automatically gave me um a recent style
- 9:31that I've used. But if you want to um
- 9:35make it your own, for instance, uh let's
- 9:38see here. Let's make it like a orangey
- 9:40color. Uh the font can be, you know,
- 9:44whatever. Uh the size you can change
- 9:47like maybe we want that a little bit
- 9:49smaller. You can easily change the name
- 9:52if you just uh double click in there and
- 9:55then like maybe we want to name this
- 9:56bedroom and then check mark that. Um if
- 10:01you want to add any other indicators
- 10:04like uh you know if you want to call out
- 10:06the material or something you can always
- 10:09just add in some model lines. So like we
- 10:11could go to our rectangle here and draw
- 10:14a little rectangle.
- 10:17give it a white solid fill. And then you
- 10:19can just add text to it. So you can say,
- 10:21you know, a floor covering wood um or
- 10:25some sort of like speck or something
- 10:26like that. And then once you're done,
- 10:28just check that. Um of course, if you
- 10:31want to change the size, if you want to
- 10:33change the uh font, that's all very easy
- 10:37to do. And then it's kind of just a
- 10:38rinse and repeat process from there. So
- 10:40you would just continue to add your
- 10:42zones, uh change your hatches. So, like
- 10:47for instance, if this is going to be a
- 10:48bathroom, I'm probably going to want a
- 10:50different texture. Uh, maybe I'll go
- 10:52over to the hatches, find something
- 10:54closer to this. Maybe I want to change
- 10:56my opacity a little bit. Um, so it's not
- 10:59so in your face.
- 11:01And then, um, again, just rinse and
- 11:04repeat. If you want to, uh, you know,
- 11:07group this text here, all you have to do
- 11:09is hold down your shift key, make sure
- 11:11that we have them both selected, and
- 11:13then group. And then you can easily move
- 11:16those around together. You could copy
- 11:17and paste and bring it into here and
- 11:19say, you know, wood covering would be
- 11:23tile in here. So let's adjust that. So
- 11:27wood covering tile. Done. Okay. And then
- 11:31again up here, we would want uh this to
- 11:33be probably the same as below. Um also,
- 11:37if this is like a closet or something,
- 11:40we can always uh edit that right over
- 11:44here.
- 11:45We're just going to say bath.
- 11:48And then same goes for up here. So I'm
- 11:51going to drag or I'm going to ey drop
- 11:54that style down there cuz I I want that
- 11:56style up here too. Uh again, change the
- 11:59name of this. This will also be the
- 12:01bath. Uh it's just going to be a large
- 12:03bath. And then uh copy paste this up
- 12:05here. So once you kind of get like your
- 12:07style down, you start getting some of
- 12:09this stuff in here. It just kind of
- 12:10becomes easy. you can just uh copy paste
- 12:13or reuse styles. It's like the setup
- 12:15that takes a little bit of time, but
- 12:17once you get that down, it's going to be
- 12:19um so much easier. Now, once you start
- 12:22getting all of your finishes in, I'm
- 12:25going to turn on my annotations layer
- 12:26really quick just to show you. We do
- 12:29need to make sure that we drag our
- 12:30finishes layer down. I'm going to
- 12:33sandwich it between the walls and the
- 12:34shadows, and you'll see why here in a
- 12:36second. So, right now, it's sitting on
- 12:37top of all the annotations that I've
- 12:38already drawn. But what I want to do is
- 12:40I want to drag this finishes layer right
- 12:42between walls and shadows. And now you
- 12:44can see there's another one of our um
- 12:47tags coming in here. But now you can see
- 12:49that this sits between the walls and the
- 12:53shadows layer. And it doesn't sit on top
- 12:55of anything else. And then when we add
- 12:57our furniture, we need to again make
- 12:59sure that those are probably either
- 13:02right above finishes or right above
- 13:03shadows. So we can just drag that there
- 13:05now. And that way when we start uh
- 13:07drawing our furniture in here in just a
- 13:10second, um it's going to sit in the
- 13:12right spot. And you can always adjust
- 13:14these if you need to. Uh this is where
- 13:16it's going to be really important to
- 13:17make sure that you're drawing on the
- 13:18right layer. Let's dive into some blocks
- 13:20here. I'm going to open up Rayon's block
- 13:23library, which is over here. This
- 13:26library has more than 10,000 blocks uh
- 13:29set up in top view, front view, and side
- 13:32view for your sections and elevations,
- 13:34which we'll get to in a later lesson. Um
- 13:37you are able to bring in your own
- 13:39blocks, so you can import DWG or PDF
- 13:42blocks um from, you know, any vendors
- 13:45that you can find online. You can also
- 13:47draw your own blocks, which I'll show
- 13:48you how to do here in a second. The nice
- 13:50thing too is that you can curate your
- 13:52own block library and then share it with
- 13:54teammates um which you know makes it so
- 13:56much easier to like standardize your
- 13:58drawing sets um easier and more
- 14:01accessible. So let's go ahead and just
- 14:03start populating just this little
- 14:04section of the floor plan uh with some
- 14:06of these blocks and then I will also
- 14:08show you how to kind of change the style
- 14:10of them as well. So we're just going to
- 14:12start with this um bedroom here. So I'm
- 14:14just going to search queen bed. Just
- 14:17type type in queen and see what comes
- 14:19up. Um, so you can see that I've already
- 14:21got multiple different options here.
- 14:23These are all in floor plan. And then
- 14:25down here we've got some like elevation
- 14:28type things. So obviously we want the
- 14:30floor plan. I'm just going to double
- 14:31click the one that I want. And then it's
- 14:33going to put it in my space. So here
- 14:36again, you can see how it's like sitting
- 14:38on top of our information. So we might
- 14:40need to move our uh layer around a
- 14:43little bit, but I'm just going to start
- 14:44by rotating it and place it where I want
- 14:46it. That's like the beauty of this is
- 14:48that these blocks are kind of like
- 14:50already grouped together, so you can
- 14:52easily just move them around um as you
- 14:55need. So, I can already see here. Let's
- 14:57go back to our layers. So, I'm probably
- 14:59going to put the furniture layer below
- 15:01finishes. Uh and then what we'll do is
- 15:05we need to probably move some of our
- 15:07text. Like for instance, this one is
- 15:09under finishes, but I can move that
- 15:11group into, you know, my annotations and
- 15:13then that will end up sitting on top
- 15:15later. If you can't get your layers
- 15:16right, you can also just move this
- 15:18around. Um, right. So, you know, if I
- 15:20know that I'm not going to have
- 15:21furniture there, maybe it makes more
- 15:22sense there. Okay. So, you know, and
- 15:24maybe we want our furniture
- 15:26to be maybe you want it above the
- 15:29shadows. You just you you figure it out
- 15:31for however you want your style to look.
- 15:33Let's populate this with a couple more
- 15:35things. Let's put a couple of wardrobes
- 15:36over here. So, I'm going to go back to
- 15:38my libraries and just type in wardrobe
- 15:41and see what we have. Um, once I find
- 15:45one that I like, uh, maybe this one,
- 15:48I'll double click it and it will come
- 15:49into my space. And then you can also
- 15:52kind of see that this is like snapping.
- 15:54So, um, it's easy to see. Okay, this is
- 15:57like sitting against the walls. Um, once
- 15:59you have those where you want them,
- 16:01maybe I want a nightstand, but maybe
- 16:03it's like, you know, a size that I can't
- 16:06find in here, so I want to draw one
- 16:08myself. Um, so what I'm going to do is
- 16:10I'm going to just draw that with my uh
- 16:12tools down here. So I'll grab my little
- 16:14rectangle tool and uh create whatever
- 16:17size I want. And then same as any other
- 16:20style, I'm going to just add a fill. Uh
- 16:22let's also say that maybe I want like a
- 16:24little lamp here. I just want to
- 16:26indicate a lamp. So if you want to make
- 16:28these into a block, you can just hold
- 16:29down your shift key and select
- 16:30everything that you want to create a
- 16:32block with. Right click and go to block.
- 16:35And now that's an actual block that I
- 16:37can come back to later. So that will
- 16:39show up in my blocks um library over
- 16:41here. So if I X out of that. So I come
- 16:43over here and I can see it there. If you
- 16:45want to rename it, you can just click on
- 16:46the three dots over here and click
- 16:48rename. So maybe it's nightstand. Enter.
- 16:51And then, you know, I can copy and paste
- 16:53that like I would any other block. You
- 16:55know, start moving things if I if
- 16:57they're not fitting. Like maybe we need
- 16:59to move it over here cuz there's an
- 17:00opening. So that makes that really easy.
- 17:02You can also add in things like a rug. I
- 17:05think they've got them named as carpets
- 17:06in here. Or again, if you have your own
- 17:09block or want to create your own block,
- 17:11uh that's what we can do here. So, you
- 17:12know, you can if you like any of these,
- 17:14you can just double click and bring that
- 17:16in here. Now, make sure that in your
- 17:18layers panel, obviously, this is sitting
- 17:20on top of everything right now. So, make
- 17:22sure in your layers panel that you go
- 17:24over here. I'm going to go under here,
- 17:26and I just want to drag this carpet
- 17:28underneath my bed and everything else.
- 17:30So, then that way it's not um sitting on
- 17:32top of things. And again, it's kind of
- 17:34blocking some of our other information
- 17:36here, but we can easily move that as we
- 17:38need to. Also, if you, you know, if
- 17:41there's a block in here that you really
- 17:42like, but maybe you want it to be a
- 17:45color or something like that, you can
- 17:47always select it and just hit edit and
- 17:50then click the block. We are going to go
- 17:53adjust the properties over here and
- 17:55change the style. Maybe we want this bed
- 17:56to be red for some reason. Um, right.
- 17:59And then once you have that uh the way
- 18:02that you want it, then you're just going
- 18:03to hit done. And now we've got a nice
- 18:06bright red bed. So once we have all of
- 18:08our information in here, right, this is
- 18:10a lot of information, but once you've,
- 18:12you know, started getting your zones and
- 18:14your uh, you know, materials and your
- 18:18furniture and any other tags or anything
- 18:20in there, again, make sure that they're
- 18:22all on the right layer. And that way
- 18:23when we go to our paper presentation
- 18:25space
- 18:26we can click on or you know when you add
- 18:30your view you want to make sure that you
- 18:32go to override or double click on it and
- 18:35then uh that's when you are able to turn
- 18:38on and off certain features. So you know
- 18:40if we wanted to turn off the annotations
- 18:44uh but you know we want the shadows on,
- 18:46we want the furniture on, we want the
- 18:48areas on. Now, this is looking a much
- 18:52more like a furniture plan, right? Like
- 18:53a furniture and finish plan than our
- 18:56construction plan that we had before.
- 18:58So, that's how you easily can just kind
- 19:00of like override and turn layers on and
- 19:02off. Use the same, you know, model that
- 19:04you've built, just uh adjust what kind
- 19:08of what you're seeing. And then you
- 19:09should have a furniture plan that's
- 19:11looking something like this. Nice work
- 19:14today. You just created a furniture and
- 19:16finish plan in rayon. You styled your
- 19:18drawing, furnished it with built-in
- 19:19blocks, and kept everything organized
- 19:21with canvases, views, and layers. Next
- 19:22up, we'll be moving to lighting plans
- 19:24and fixture spec sheets so you can keep
- 19:26building towards that full interior
- 19:28construction documentation set. Don't
- 19:29forget to download the free template to
- 19:31practice with. And if you're enjoying
- 19:32this series, please make sure you like,
