- 0:00what's up guys justin here with the
- 0:03sketchup essentials.com back with
- 0:04another sketchup dynamic components
- 0:06tutorial for you so last week we kicked
- 0:09off a series on dynamic components and i
- 0:10talked through the basics so in today's
- 0:12video we're going to create a practical
- 0:14example by creating a dynamic shelf in
- 0:16sketchup today's video is brought to you
- 0:18by the sketch essentials course the
- 0:20sketch potentials course is my course
- 0:21that i created to give you a start to
- 0:23finish training in sketchup so it's got
- 0:26over 14 hours of instruction as well as
- 0:29we have a community forum where you can
- 0:31come to get your questions answered and
- 0:33we get together every two weeks on live
- 0:35calls to talk about sketchup so if you
- 0:37have any questions you can ask them
- 0:38there as well so if that's something
- 0:40you're interested in you want to come
- 0:41hang out with me on some live calls or
- 0:43just check out the sketchup training
- 0:44library make sure you check that out at
- 0:46the sketchup essentials dot com slash
- 0:48course now let's go ahead and just jump
- 0:49into it all right so what we want to do
- 0:51in this situation let's create something
- 0:52simple like a shelf and so if you think
- 0:55about a shelf basically it's made up of
- 0:57a couple different components right it's
- 0:59made up of a couple sides as well as a
- 1:02top and then however many shelves you
- 1:05have
- 1:06down below there may be some trim pieces
- 1:07and stuff but we're going to keep this
- 1:09really simple for right now we may add a
- 1:10back as well but what we want to do is
- 1:13we want to start by modeling those out
- 1:15and i'm just going to create a very
- 1:16simple shelf so maybe something that's
- 1:19like 24 inches long
- 1:21and we'll say that it's going to be
- 1:23we'll call it four feet high
- 1:26so i'm just drawing a rectangle that's
- 1:28going to make up a side for right now
- 1:30then i'm just going to push pull this
- 1:31and we're going to say this is maybe
- 1:33like .75 so three quarters of an inch
- 1:36thick
- 1:39and so that's going to act as our side
- 1:40for our shelf right so the first thing
- 1:42we're going to do is we're going to
- 1:43select this whole thing right click and
- 1:45we're going to make that a component and
- 1:47i'm going to go ahead and call this the
- 1:48left
- 1:50side
- 1:52right here
- 1:54and so now
- 1:55what we want to do is we want to add the
- 1:58shelves and the top
- 2:00and in this case we're going to make
- 2:02those be the same thing so let's start
- 2:04just by adding a shelf so let's say this
- 2:06shelf is going to be maybe like four
- 2:08inches off the ground
- 2:09let's start with it being maybe like
- 2:12we'll say 36 inches wide for right now
- 2:15so i'm just going to draw a rectangle
- 2:17that's going to be the size that we want
- 2:19all right so we'll just delete out this
- 2:20extra line we'll push pull this up
- 2:23maybe 0.75 again and then we'll just
- 2:25make this a component and we're just
- 2:27going to call this
- 2:28shelf
- 2:30i'm going to hit the enter key and so
- 2:32then we can use the move tool in copy
- 2:33mode to create a couple different copies
- 2:35of this so for me right now i'm going to
- 2:37make a copy it goes up to the top then
- 2:40type in
- 2:41forward slash and a 3
- 2:43so that now we have 4 copies total so i
- 2:46just use the move tool in copy mode in
- 2:48order to do that and then let's go ahead
- 2:50and let's take this side piece
- 2:52and let's use the move tool and copy
- 2:54mode to copy this over and one thing i'm
- 2:56going to do because i don't want two
- 2:58left side pieces remember i labeled
- 3:00these left side i'm going to go ahead
- 3:05and i'm going to make this unique i'm
- 3:07going to call this one right
- 3:09side so now we have one two three four
- 3:13five six components in our model well we
- 3:15want to take all of those and we want to
- 3:17combine them into a single component so
- 3:20i'm just going to right click in here
- 3:21i'm going to click on make component and
- 3:23we'll call this
- 3:25shelving unit
- 3:27and i'm going to hit the enter key so
- 3:28now this is a component that can
- 3:31contains all of those parts and pieces
- 3:33well now what we want to do is we want
- 3:34to right click in here and we want to go
- 3:36down to the dynamic components
- 3:38functionality and we want to edit the
- 3:40component attributes so when we do this
- 3:43remember that nested components inside
- 3:45of an object show up down below
- 3:48right here so notice how we've got our
- 3:50four shelves we've got our left side and
- 3:53our right side and so if i was to double
- 3:55click in here and just click on this
- 3:57notice how i would see just the right
- 3:59side right here but now what we need to
- 4:02do is we need to adjust these so that
- 4:04our shelving width adjusts based on a
- 4:07width that our user gives us and in this
- 4:09case we're just going to use drop downs
- 4:12so the first thing we need to do is we
- 4:14need to provide the user a drop down
- 4:16where they can enter the value and so to
- 4:18do that we're going to go into the
- 4:19attribute name and we're just going to
- 4:21type in a custom name so in this case
- 4:23i'm going to type in a value of width
- 4:26right here
- 4:27and so width is going to be the value
- 4:29that our user is going to give us for
- 4:30the width of our cabinet so in this case
- 4:33what we want to do is we don't want to
- 4:35set this as a value instead we want to
- 4:37click on this button right here for
- 4:38details and we want to set this so that
- 4:41our users can select options from a list
- 4:44so we're just going to click on this
- 4:45button right here
- 4:47and then we just want to give them some
- 4:48options so in this case let's give an
- 4:51option for 18
- 4:52inches
- 4:54we'll add an option for
- 4:5624 inches
- 4:58we'll add a 36 inches
- 5:02and we'll add a 48 inches
- 5:05so now we have four options that they
- 5:08can select from a list and we're going
- 5:10to click on apply well now if they were
- 5:12to right click in here in our dynamic
- 5:13components and click on component
- 5:15options notice how they're going to have
- 5:17a drop down with these options in here
- 5:20but
- 5:21notice how in addition our options
- 5:23aren't doing anything right now so we
- 5:25have the option where they can give us
- 5:27the information that we need now what we
- 5:29want to do is we want to set up the math
- 5:31functions inside of here that are going
- 5:33to make our shelf adjust
- 5:35and so what we want to do is we want to
- 5:37set the width of our shelving pieces to
- 5:40the value that our user selects so in
- 5:43this case we're just going to click on
- 5:45the drop down for shelf
- 5:46and we're just going to
- 5:49add an attribute for
- 5:51length on the x-axis so len x
- 5:55so if we do this
- 5:56what that's going to do is that's going
- 5:57to set the length of our object along
- 6:00that x-axis and so instead of having a
- 6:04hard type value in here what we want to
- 6:06do is we want to link this value
- 6:09to this value and we can do that by
- 6:11doing equals and then
- 6:14clicking
- 6:15on this cell right here notice what this
- 6:17does is this links back to this value
- 6:20with a variable so instead of this being
- 6:22a hard type number it's going to adjust
- 6:25based on what's typed in here so if i
- 6:27hit the enter key now
- 6:29notice how all of the shelves are
- 6:32adjusting
- 6:33to match that width that we had set so
- 6:36if we go into our dynamic components and
- 6:38click on component options notice how
- 6:40now the width is going to equal
- 6:43whatever we have
- 6:45in here from a width standpoint
- 6:47right so notice how those shelf pieces
- 6:49are getting wider or narrower based on
- 6:51what's selected however
- 6:54now we need to come in here and we need
- 6:55to set this up so that this piece right
- 6:58here adjusts along with this because
- 7:00it's in the wrong position
- 7:02when we adjust our width and so this is
- 7:04part of why i made this a unique
- 7:06component what we want to do and i do
- 7:08want to know because these are all
- 7:10instances of the same component these
- 7:12shelf objects if i was to double click
- 7:14in here notice how all of them got this
- 7:16equal shelving unit width applied to it
- 7:19that's why this happened to all of them
- 7:21and not just one if these weren't copies
- 7:23of the same component then you would
- 7:25have to come in here and you'd have to
- 7:26do that over and over again but what we
- 7:28want to do now is we want to adjust our
- 7:30right side so that it aligns with our
- 7:34shelving whenever it adjusts and so the
- 7:36way that we can do that is we can come
- 7:38in here and we can add
- 7:40a position attribute the position
- 7:43attribute is going to select the
- 7:45location of this object along the left
- 7:47the x y or z axis well in this case we
- 7:50want the x axis right here
- 7:53and so
- 7:55now we've set this so that our x-axis
- 7:58location has a value in it but we want
- 8:01to do the same thing we did before where
- 8:03we want to do an equals we want to click
- 8:05on the width right here then i'm going
- 8:07to hit the enter key well now when we
- 8:10adjust this
- 8:11notice how the location on the x-axis
- 8:15is adjusting
- 8:16based on the location or the width of
- 8:19our shelf so now this is moving along
- 8:22with this but you may notice we've got a
- 8:24little bit of an issue because this is
- 8:26only moving
- 8:27this width which is basically the width
- 8:29of this entire shelf well the problem is
- 8:32this also has some thickness and so what
- 8:35that means is that means that this needs
- 8:37to move over an additional three
- 8:39quarters of an inch
- 8:40to be aligned with the end of our shelf
- 8:43so in order to do that we're just going
- 8:44to go back into our right side and we're
- 8:46just going to add
- 8:48plus 0.75
- 8:50and hit the enter key well now what this
- 8:53is going to do is whenever we select a
- 8:55width this is going to move the object
- 8:57that width plus an additional three
- 9:00quarters of an inch so now when i do
- 9:02this notice how the side of our shelf
- 9:06is adjusting along with the width of our
- 9:08shelf we can use this in order to really
- 9:10quickly adjust the width of our shelving
- 9:12unit and so now one other thing is
- 9:15remember how we talked about we might
- 9:16want a back on this shelf well we didn't
- 9:19initially have a back on the shelf but
- 9:22what we can do is we can add
- 9:24another component in here that can be
- 9:26the width of our shelf so all i'm going
- 9:29to do is i'm just going to come in here
- 9:31and notice i've double clicked in here
- 9:32and these are still individual
- 9:34components well i just want to draw
- 9:37on the back of this
- 9:39a shelf or a back and i just want to
- 9:41give it a thickness of 0.75
- 9:45and then
- 9:46i'm going to triple click on it i'm
- 9:47going to right click and i'm going to
- 9:48make it a component and we're going to
- 9:50call this the back
- 9:52so now if i click on create
- 9:54we have a back
- 9:56in here
- 9:57as well
- 9:58and so one other thing we need to do
- 9:59though is we need to make sure that we
- 10:01set the back up so that it adjusts along
- 10:04with the rest of our object
- 10:06so all we need to do with our back is
- 10:08just do the same thing where we set our
- 10:10length on the x-axis
- 10:12to
- 10:14equals
- 10:15width
- 10:17and hit the enter key
- 10:18now
- 10:20that back piece
- 10:21is going to adjust
- 10:23based on the width that we give this
- 10:25object
- 10:26and so now that we know how to do this
- 10:27there's a lot of interesting things we
- 10:29could do here like for example we've got
- 10:32this setup where we can set the width of
- 10:34our shelf well there's nothing saying we
- 10:36can't also set the depth
- 10:39of our shelf
- 10:40so the depth we want to make another
- 10:42user drop down
- 10:44right so in this case let's say that we
- 10:46give options for 12 inches
- 10:5118 inches
- 10:53and 24 inches
- 10:55we're going to click the apply button
- 10:57right here now notice how we have a drop
- 10:59down that allows us to set those three
- 11:01values well then all we have to do is
- 11:04just set these objects so that they have
- 11:06a length on the y instead of the x of
- 11:09that value so we would just come into
- 11:11our shelf and we would set our length y
- 11:14and we would say
- 11:15equals
- 11:17our depth
- 11:19right here
- 11:22we need to do the same thing with our
- 11:24right side shelf
- 11:26so
- 11:26length y
- 11:30equals
- 11:31our depth
- 11:33and
- 11:34we need to set our left side shelf so
- 11:37that it does the length y so we're going
- 11:39to do an equals oops
- 11:42depth
- 11:43right here so notice how all of those
- 11:45are adjusting all we have to do now is
- 11:47set the back of the object so that it
- 11:50does the same thing that we did with our
- 11:51width right it just needs to move along
- 11:53with this so for our back all we want to
- 11:56do is we want to adjust our position on
- 11:58the y axis so we're going to click right
- 12:00here and then we're just going to do an
- 12:02equals
- 12:04and we're going to set
- 12:06our depth to 12.
- 12:09hit the enter key so now if we adjust
- 12:11our depth
- 12:13notice how this is going to move along
- 12:15with our object so now we've got a shelf
- 12:17where we can come in here and we can
- 12:18adjust the width
- 12:20and we can adjust the depth really
- 12:22quickly one other thing to note is i did
- 12:23notice that we've got a little bit of a
- 12:25gap here that's because our width isn't
- 12:28incorporating the side pieces on the
- 12:29back so all you would do is you would
- 12:31just say plus
- 12:330.75
- 12:34times 2 for your length and then hit the
- 12:36enter key so that's just adding in the
- 12:39width of these panels so one and then
- 12:42the other one right here so now your
- 12:44dynamic shelf is something that you can
- 12:46adjust really quickly inside of sketchup
- 12:50all right so that's for me in this video
- 12:51leave a comment below let me know what
- 12:52kind of dynamic components you'd like to
- 12:54learn to create in the future if you are
- 12:56interested in going more in depth in
- 12:58sketchup make sure you check out my
- 12:59course at sketchup essentials dot com
- 13:01slash course i'd love to help you learn
- 13:03sketchup more in depth but as always
- 13:06thank you so much for taking the time to
- 13:07watch this i really appreciate it and i
- 13:09will catch you in the next video thanks
- 13:11guys
