Creating 3D Character with AI in 1 Min vs 1 H vs 10 H — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00In this video I
- 0:01gonna challenge myself to
- 0:02create a character with
- 0:04AI in limited time.
- 0:06We gonna start with
- 0:071 minute, then 1
- 0:08hour, and then 10 hours.
- 0:10Well, actually 10 hours
- 0:12was too much and
- 0:136 hours was enough
- 0:14to get it perfect.
- 0:15Anyway guys, you always
- 0:16ask me like if
- 0:18we can create character
- 0:19faster or someone actually
- 0:21ask how we can
- 0:21create it better.
- 0:22So it's a perfect
- 0:23opportunity to introduce a
- 0:24few approaches and see
- 0:26what quality we can
- 0:27actually reach.
- 0:27Let's start with 1 minute.
- 0:29Well, 1 minute is
- 0:31not enough to even
- 0:32generate a 3D model.
- 0:34But let's say we
- 0:35can generate 3D model
- 0:37within a minute.
- 0:38It will take around
- 0:382 -3 minutes.
- 0:40I gonna use Tripo
- 0:41and the recent P2
- 0:43which is like the
- 0:44best low poly possible.
- 0:45It also generating quads etc.
- 0:48So we gonna generate
- 0:48character there.
- 0:49Here we can see
- 0:50the mesh.
- 0:50I mean like if
- 0:51I see this mesh
- 0:52like year ago I
- 0:53would say like this
- 0:54is like most perfect
- 0:55mesh etc.
- 0:56But what we gonna
- 0:57do later will be
- 0:58even better.
- 0:59And the second step
- 1:00will be to actually
- 1:01texture it.
- 1:02When you do it
- 1:03with P2 it requires
- 1:042 step.
- 1:06Okay, after approximately 3
- 1:08minutes here is our result.
- 1:10Well, it is indeed
- 1:11a 3D model but
- 1:12we can definitely spot
- 1:13some blurry spots like
- 1:15eyes etc.
- 1:16I mean there's quite
- 1:17a lot of things
- 1:17that we definitely want
- 1:18to improve.
- 1:19And since we Do
- 1:20not have any time
- 1:21to do the rigging
- 1:22like if we bring
- 1:22it to Unreal Engine
- 1:23it will be like this.
- 1:26Alright, let's take things serious.
- 1:28One hour.
- 1:29And to increase the
- 1:30quality in one hour
- 1:31generation most important thing
- 1:33where I gonna invest
- 1:34my time is to
- 1:35generate my model in parts.
- 1:37I mean we gonna
- 1:38use the same Tripo
- 1:40P2 with the smart
- 1:41mesh but I gonna
- 1:42approach it part by
- 1:43part and set different
- 1:45settings for the mesh.
- 1:46The good thing about
- 1:47P2 is that it
- 1:48generates meshes very fast
- 1:50and you can iterate
- 1:52like usually takes like
- 1:541 -2 max retries
- 1:56with the different polycount
- 1:58settings to get the
- 1:59right polycount, right stance,
- 2:02you know like right
- 2:03wireframe etc.
- 2:04I mean it's insanely
- 2:05good model.
- 2:06Here by the way
- 2:07you can see what
- 2:08parts are extracted.
- 2:09Again, usually I go
- 2:10like this.
- 2:11Like there is the
- 2:12body, there is head
- 2:13and again like all
- 2:15the separately of course
- 2:16like weapons and stuff
- 2:18also separate.
- 2:19I mean it just
- 2:20works better that way.
- 2:21I mean you don't
- 2:22need to go like
- 2:22crazy splitting every single detail.
- 2:25I would say like
- 2:26think about like some
- 2:27detail that fit like
- 2:28within 500 to 1000
- 2:30polygons, right?
- 2:30Here you can see
- 2:31all parts on the
- 2:32screen which I decided
- 2:33to go with.
- 2:34And again in terms
- 2:35of wireframe most of
- 2:36the cases again I
- 2:38was extremely happy from
- 2:39first trial.
- 2:40I mean with this
- 2:41approach it is crazy
- 2:42how good.
- 2:43This wireframe look like.
- 2:44I mean of course
- 2:45it can break and
- 2:46there are some edge cases.
- 2:47I would say like
- 2:48with some realistic garment etc.
- 2:51It might not work
- 2:52that well.
- 2:53I did a video
- 2:54about it but overall
- 2:55for characters specifically especially
- 2:57styled characters.
- 2:58Such as mine it
- 2:59works extremely good.
- 3:00You see what you see.
- 3:02I remember someone was
- 3:03asking in the comments
- 3:04if I.
- 3:05Don't do realistic characters
- 3:07intentionally but I mean
- 3:08I actually like styled
- 3:09character more and I
- 3:11think they are more creative.
- 3:12But don't worry I
- 3:13already working on the
- 3:14video showing you how
- 3:15to do realistic characters
- 3:17and in my opinion
- 3:18that's actually easier.
- 3:19To generate.
- 3:20All parts I actually
- 3:21spent more than 30 minutes.
- 3:23So now I don't
- 3:24have much time left
- 3:25and I need to
- 3:26assemble them in.
- 3:27Blender quickly and get
- 3:29some time to rig
- 3:30it and put to
- 3:30Unreal Engine so it
- 3:31finally actually moves.
- 3:32And the good news
- 3:33here that.
- 3:34I will be able
- 3:35to do that really quick.
- 3:36So process here quite simple.
- 3:37Cut some duplicating parts
- 3:39and assemble things.
- 3:41Carefully together.
- 3:42With Blender sculpting modes
- 3:44or Blender proportional editing
- 3:46that is like super
- 3:47super easy.
- 3:48Again like you just.
- 3:49Need like few brushes.
- 3:50Anyway 20 minutes later
- 3:51I have my character
- 3:53assembled and now it's
- 3:55time to rig it.
- 3:56And.
- 3:56There's two ways that
- 3:57we can do that.
- 3:57Like you can drop
- 3:58all together without weapons
- 4:00of course and just
- 4:02rig it all together.
- 4:03Or you can separate
- 4:04the parts that will
- 4:06be static anyway.
- 4:07Like accessories again they
- 4:09are not bending right
- 4:10so they are signed
- 4:11100 % to some
- 4:12one bone.
- 4:13So I gotta do
- 4:14quickly the aqua rig
- 4:15like because I don't
- 4:16have a lot of
- 4:17time and quickly for
- 4:18some rigid objects like
- 4:20the waist accessories I'm
- 4:21gonna need to set
- 4:23100 % weights to
- 4:24some specific bones.
- 4:25That's pretty much it
- 4:26I don't have time
- 4:27to anything else.
- 4:28Quickly bringing my character
- 4:30to Unreal Engine and
- 4:31I have to quickly
- 4:33set some materials and
- 4:35target the animation to
- 4:36the controller.
- 4:37So it was a
- 4:38little bit more than
- 4:39an hour like hope
- 4:40you forgive me like
- 4:41for this extra three minutes.
- 4:43And here we go
- 4:44my character is in
- 4:45Unreal Engine and so
- 4:46we can actually walk
- 4:48around and it actually
- 4:49looks not bad right.
- 4:50But what do we
- 4:51see here we of
- 4:52course see the lack
- 4:53of any physics.
- 4:54We do have tail
- 4:55we do have some
- 4:56stuff around like I
- 4:58mean that is absolutely
- 4:59rigid and definitely we
- 5:01can set materials better right.
- 5:03Okay so moving to
- 5:04the 10 hours.
- 5:05So what's gonna be
- 5:06different now?
- 5:06Well actually for generation
- 5:08we're gonna use exactly
- 5:09the same approach.
- 5:10I still gonna go
- 5:12with PPP2 maybe just
- 5:13spend a little bit
- 5:14more time generating parts
- 5:15because I learned what
- 5:17parts are missing like
- 5:18while assembling it last time.
- 5:19So I'm gonna generate
- 5:21few more parts.
- 5:22There was some back.
- 5:23accessories.
- 5:23I also gonna give
- 5:25few retries to some
- 5:26of the objects I
- 5:27was not really happy
- 5:28and I was forced
- 5:29to move fast last
- 5:30And if.
- 5:31You're a professional 3d
- 5:32artist you might ask
- 5:33me but why if
- 5:34I have 10 hours
- 5:35I don't choose to
- 5:36go with high poly
- 5:37to low poly.
- 5:38Well that's a good
- 5:39question that is actually
- 5:41possible if you will
- 5:42have quite a lot
- 5:43of detailed measures and
- 5:44you want to bake normal.
- 5:45Maps You can generate
- 5:47something high poly then
- 5:48retrypology etc.
- 5:49But at this very
- 5:50moment I recording this
- 5:52video PPP2.
- 5:53Produces much better low
- 5:55poly especially with quads
- 5:57than any retrypology.
- 5:59Well for retrypology we.
- 6:00Have options such as
- 6:01Tripo retrypology and also
- 6:03Hunyuan retrypology.
- 6:04And I must say
- 6:05quality of mesh that
- 6:05Tripo p2 provides is so.
- 6:07Much better that I
- 6:08just prefer to move
- 6:09along with this low
- 6:11poly models and add
- 6:12details on texture and
- 6:13I gonna show you
- 6:14how to do.
- 6:15That And also I
- 6:16say sometimes skipping retrypology
- 6:18baking all that stuff.
- 6:20Not completely there will
- 6:21be few things to.
- 6:22Do but still.
- 6:23And by the way
- 6:24guys if you want
- 6:24to try Tripo itself
- 6:25you can try it
- 6:26for free and by
- 6:27my link in the
- 6:28description you gonna get.
- 6:29500 credits if you
- 6:31are a new user.
- 6:31Now I gonna bring
- 6:33all these parts again
- 6:34to Blender and start assembling.
- 6:36Actually it will.
- 6:37Be pretty much the
- 6:38same base so behind
- 6:39the scene I.
- 6:40Actually can reuse what
- 6:41I already did in
- 6:42one hour but I
- 6:43gonna just pay more
- 6:44attention to how accurate
- 6:46details are.
- 6:47And as I mentioned
- 6:48it still can produce
- 6:50some artifacts there might
- 6:51be some issues with
- 6:53the mesh etc.
- 6:53So I gonna take
- 6:55my time to address
- 6:56all of them.
- 6:57There are not a
- 6:58lot but again there
- 6:59can be some stuff
- 7:01that you just want
- 7:02like to smooth or
- 7:03fix or maybe update
- 7:05the wireframe.
- 7:06You'll see all the
- 7:07timelines that I did.
- 7:08Altogether assembling, fixing some
- 7:11geometry somewhere it was
- 7:13a bit spent I
- 7:14had to straighten that
- 7:15or some small that.
- 7:17Altogether it took like
- 7:19around 40 minutes.
- 7:21And yeah I also
- 7:22had to fix some
- 7:23holes, cap some polygons
- 7:25or optimize mesh a
- 7:26little bit.
- 7:26For example I added
- 7:27an accessory a scarf
- 7:28and I want it
- 7:29to be a single
- 7:30plane because I want
- 7:31to add the cloth
- 7:32physics later.
- 7:33Like when it's double
- 7:35sided like it's not
- 7:36that convenient so I
- 7:37gonna just cut it.
- 7:38Okay now it looks
- 7:39much better and it
- 7:41will be easier for
- 7:42me to add physics.
- 7:43When I finalized my
- 7:44mesh it's about time
- 7:45to do the unwrapping.
- 7:47And it's never been
- 7:48easier to do the
- 7:49unwrapping for AI generated
- 7:51mesh as when you
- 7:52work with cheapo P2.
- 7:53Because guys this mesh
- 7:54is logical and you
- 7:56can go and compare
- 7:56it yourself.
- 7:57Like it's so much
- 7:58easier like first of
- 7:59all logical means that
- 8:00you can easily manipulate.
- 8:02With some separated parts
- 8:04within the object.
- 8:05Second it's so much
- 8:06easier to work with
- 8:08seams and set the.
- 8:09Seams for UV purpose.
- 8:11To completely unwrap my
- 8:12character it took me
- 8:13only 30 minutes which
- 8:15I think is crazy.
- 8:16And.
- 8:16Why do you need
- 8:17that right UV?
- 8:18Well good UV give
- 8:19you some benefits.
- 8:20Like you can do
- 8:21nice baking, pack texture
- 8:22nicer in lower.
- 8:24Resolution It is way
- 8:25more editable.
- 8:26It has less artifacts.
- 8:27When you have like
- 8:29thousands of islands it's
- 8:30very difficult to.
- 8:31Avoid small artifacts.
- 8:32And I want to
- 8:33get best quality so
- 8:34we need to care
- 8:35about optimization.
- 8:36And later I also
- 8:37gonna add materials.
- 8:38So all these things matters.
- 8:40So after doing UV
- 8:41unwrap I re -baked
- 8:42the color in one
- 8:44bigger texture space and started.
- 8:46To address some texture issues.
- 8:48Like I mean there
- 8:48are plenty of ways
- 8:49how you can do that.
- 8:50You can try to
- 8:51do that in Blender
- 8:52like with the.
- 8:53Clone brush just addressing
- 8:55some issues like again
- 8:56like depending like how
- 8:58lazy you are.
- 8:59Or you can take
- 9:00it to.
- 9:00Modi for example.
- 9:01It's one of my
- 9:02favorite tools where you
- 9:03can actually generate texture
- 9:05from image reference and
- 9:06apply, fix some holes.
- 9:08Etc But most of
- 9:09that approaches only really
- 9:10work for color texture
- 9:12and little bit for
- 9:14normal map.
- 9:14There is a normal.
- 9:15Painting and motif.
- 9:16If I want to
- 9:17get the best possible
- 9:18quality it means also
- 9:19adding some nice PBR stuff.
- 9:21And I.
- 9:21still.
- 9:22Have one paint software
- 9:23in my list that
- 9:24is hard to replace
- 9:25but I'm really looking
- 9:26into it.
- 9:27It is substance painter for.
- 9:29Materials Also can be
- 9:30used for baking like
- 9:32baking ambient occlusion normal
- 9:33maps etc.
- 9:34And going here with
- 9:35good UV really.
- 9:36Makes sense.
- 9:37Without good UV you
- 9:39might have less access
- 9:40to all what substance
- 9:42painter can offer.
- 9:43Right the whole idea.
- 9:43Here is that you
- 9:44can define some zones
- 9:45and quickly apply some
- 9:47materials such as for
- 9:49example fur material.
- 9:50I can apply it.
- 9:51On top of my
- 9:52color texture and again
- 9:53really quick it will
- 9:54do the good job.
- 9:55So I'm here not
- 9:56really to do the
- 9:58painting but.
- 9:58More to adjust the
- 10:00materials because overall I
- 10:01was really happy with
- 10:02the For some gold
- 10:04ornaments I.
- 10:05Did assign the material
- 10:07here but again that
- 10:08was like easy because
- 10:09I got like really
- 10:11nice UV and also
- 10:12it's like a.
- 10:13Really good mesh.
- 10:14So even without UV
- 10:15I was able to
- 10:16just click on the
- 10:17polygons and assign the
- 10:19material nicely because it.
- 10:20Is logical.
- 10:21It's so cooler I
- 10:22mean to work with it.
- 10:23Okay you can spend
- 10:24a lot of time there.
- 10:25I'm gonna bring material
- 10:26texture to Blender and connect.
- 10:28Them here.
- 10:28And also I completely
- 10:30forgot stuff I need
- 10:32my eyes done.
- 10:33So I actually had to.
- 10:35Rework a little bit
- 10:36the eyes and the
- 10:37good news it was
- 10:38quite easy.
- 10:38I just created a
- 10:39sphere and put them
- 10:41внутри the.
- 10:42eye.
- 10:42Space and generated some
- 10:44cool texture with nano banana.
- 10:46So here you can
- 10:47see connected to the eye.
- 10:48Boom!
- 10:49I think looks so.
- 10:50Much better right now.
- 10:51And here's my character
- 10:52ready to be rigged.
- 10:53I still gonna use
- 10:55Aku rigged to start
- 10:56with because again.
- 10:57Like that's just like
- 10:58a good starting point
- 10:59like it provides really
- 11:00good quality.
- 11:01So I'm gonna put
- 11:03my character there alone.
- 11:05Without accessories again and
- 11:06do the rigging as
- 11:08the previous time.
- 11:09Now it's time to
- 11:10assign all the accessories.
- 11:12We're.
- 11:12Also gonna take care
- 11:13about stuff like tail etc.
- 11:15Why?
- 11:15Because we're gonna set
- 11:16the physics.
- 11:17So here's the final result.
- 11:19I even.
- 11:19Added like a small
- 11:21bone here to do
- 11:22the animation of this part.
- 11:24For this scarf part.
- 11:27I left them again
- 11:29without the skeleton because
- 11:30I gonna apply clothing
- 11:32physics in Unreal Engine.
- 11:34And the tail.
- 11:34Of course.
- 11:35Yeah you can see
- 11:35like the bunch of
- 11:36bones here and all
- 11:38things here.
- 11:39They also do have
- 11:40some bones.
- 11:41Here One, two, three, four.
- 11:44Okay.
- 11:45Hope you can see
- 11:45it nicely.
- 11:46Well I think that's enough.
- 11:47I'm pretty happy with.
- 11:48My character.
- 11:49Other settings can be done.
- 11:52Altogether at this stage
- 11:53I spent 5 .5 hours.
- 11:56And if you guys
- 11:57also want to learn
- 11:58fastest way how you can.
- 11:59Create your own 3D
- 12:00character combining AI tools
- 12:02with base minimum of
- 12:043D skills you most
- 12:05welcome to join my 3D.
- 12:07AI course.
- 12:07We already have more
- 12:08than 100 happy.
- 12:09Students creating their characters.
- 12:11All links will be
- 12:12in the description.
- 12:12And I recently also
- 12:14launched environment course.
- 12:15So now you can
- 12:16create character and a
- 12:17world for this character.
- 12:19In Unreal Engine I
- 12:20spent some decent amount
- 12:22of time setting materials.
- 12:24Because Blender materials are
- 12:25of course not really
- 12:27exported to Unreal Engine.
- 12:28And I also gonna
- 12:29use that preset for
- 12:31this cool parkour animations.
- 12:33Right?
- 12:34Just retarget the animation
- 12:35into one of the
- 12:36character presented in this
- 12:37template and you already
- 12:39can run around.
- 12:40I don't know why
- 12:41everyone still surprised that
- 12:42it is so easy.
- 12:43Epic Games team actually
- 12:44made it so easy
- 12:45to use and But
- 12:47that's only the moment
- 12:48and I still have
- 12:49to spend some time
- 12:50assigning the physical bones.
- 12:52I still don't get
- 12:53it like why they
- 12:54cannot make this tool
- 12:55more convenient like because
- 12:56it's really a nightmare
- 12:57like to set all
- 12:59these colliders right here
- 13:00in Unreal Engine.
- 13:01They did an update
- 13:02to clothing however so
- 13:04it should be easier
- 13:05but I don't know
- 13:05like I still sometimes
- 13:07use the old way
- 13:09for clothing especially if
- 13:10I need to add
- 13:11it like just once.
- 13:12Maybe used to it
- 13:13like over time.
- 13:14But there's a new
- 13:15workflow that allow you
- 13:16to you know like
- 13:17do it once and
- 13:19reassign easily the same
- 13:20clothing physics presets etc.
- 13:23So count another hour
- 13:25in Unreal Engine and
- 13:26here we go.
- 13:27Pretty amazing right?
- 13:29I'm really really happy
- 13:30like how my character
- 13:31ended up.
- 13:32And speaking Of my
- 13:3310 hours title it
- 13:34was indeed the plan
- 13:35and I was planning
- 13:36to use that high
- 13:37poly to low poly
- 13:38baking and approximately I
- 13:40think I would end
- 13:41up like 10 hours
- 13:42or so.
- 13:43But when I tested
- 13:44retopology and compared it
- 13:46with the P2 I
- 13:47just changed my mind
- 13:48and decided like I
- 13:49better show you like
- 13:50the faster workflow that
- 13:52for me now works better.
- 13:54The only case when
- 13:55you don't want to
- 13:56use it if you
- 13:57have like really detailed
- 13:59high poly that you
- 14:00want to start with
- 14:01and preserve a lot
- 14:02of details like baking
- 14:03normal maps etc.
- 14:04That can make sense
- 14:05and then I would
- 14:07say okay go with
- 14:07that longer pass.
- 14:08Other than if you
- 14:09have like styled characters
- 14:11or simplified characters just
- 14:12go with P2 like
- 14:14low poly right away.
- 14:15It is just amazing
- 14:16how cool it works now.
- 14:18That was Steph.
- 14:18and Please don't forget
- 14:19to subscribe to not
- 14:21miss more of these
- 14:22amazing videos.
- 14:22See you in the
- 14:23next one.
