- 0:00If you've ever spent way too long
- 0:01putting together a concept board, mood
- 0:03board, or precedent board just for your
- 0:05client to not fully understand the
- 0:06design direction, you're definitely not
- 0:08alone. Even though assembling visual
- 0:11boards can be fun, one of the most
- 0:12frustrating parts is how much time it
- 0:14takes. And even then, clients still
- 0:17struggle to visualize how all the pieces
- 0:19come together in the final building.
- 0:21[music] Not to mention all the revisions
- 0:23that follow when the vision isn't
- 0:25communicated clearly. [music] So today I
- 0:28want to show you a faster, easier way to
- 0:30build those architectural mood boards
- 0:32that actually communicate your design
- 0:34intent without complicating your
- 0:36workflow. [music] In this tutorial, I'm
- 0:38going to walk you through how to build
- 0:39an architectural concept board in Rayon
- 0:41Design from start to finish. And if
- 0:44you're new here, Rayon Design is the new
- 0:46gen effortless CAD tool for architects
- 0:48where you can go from early concept
- 0:50ideas all the way to architectural
- 0:53documentation [music] in one
- 0:54collaborative web-based environment.
- 0:56Rayon Design has a lot of powerful
- 0:58[music] features, but today we're going
- 1:00to focus specifically on concept boards,
- 1:03importing inspiration and precedent
- 1:04[music] images quickly, editing them
- 1:06directly in the canvas, using AI tools
- 1:09to modify and explore design ideas, and
- 1:12[music] collaborating with teammates,
- 1:14and presenting concepts to your clients
- 1:16in real time. And before we jump in, you
- 1:18can go ahead and create a free Rayon
- 1:21account, [music] so you can follow along
- 1:22and grab the free template linked in the
- 1:24description below. If you're ready,
- 1:26let's get started.
- 1:28[music]
- 1:30Okay, let's start by going into my Rayon
- 1:32workspace. So, you can see that here
- 1:33with my multiple projects. I'm going to
- 1:35click on this one. It will just take a
- 1:37second to load. And we end up in the
- 1:39paper canvas. So, you can see here, this
- 1:41is the design for an apartment project,
- 1:44a duplex home renovation. So, you can
- 1:46see a number of sort of precedent
- 1:47images. You can see our floor plans. We
- 1:50can see some lighting plans, even, you
- 1:52know, detailed kitchen layouts. some
- 1:54[music] great sections and elevation.
- 1:57So, what I want to do is start thinking
- 2:00about those precedent images, that sort
- 2:02of concept board that I want to bring
- 2:03into Rayon. So, we've got two sheets
- 2:06already set up. And as I said, we're in
- 2:08the paper canvas. [music] So, you can
- 2:09see here just on the layers side, we
- 2:12have a number of different canvases. So,
- 2:13my model canvas with all of my drawings
- 2:16is sitting here and my paper canvas is
- 2:18sitting here. And all I'm doing is
- 2:19taking views of those different drawings
- 2:21[music] to bring them onto sheets. So
- 2:23when I'm doing things like concept
- 2:25boards, I like to do in the paper
- 2:26canvas, and that's just through pure
- 2:28speed. So I can lay out those things
- 2:30really neatly. So we can import images
- 2:32in a number of different ways. One is
- 2:35our [music] straight import. So we can
- 2:36go to menu, import image, and I just
- 2:39have a number of images saved within
- 2:41[music] a document that I've been, you
- 2:43know, finding on the internet through
- 2:44magazines, different things that are
- 2:46kind of um, you know, giving a thought
- 2:48process to this, the styling of the
- 2:50interior and the exterior. So, we've got
- 2:53a number of images that we can bring in.
- 2:54So, simply I go open, press click,
- 2:57[music] and an image will come into my
- 2:59space very easily. I can just drag those
- 3:01pointers to reshape that and bring that
- 3:04in. And I can do that with all of my
- 3:05images [music] for my internal scene,
- 3:08for example. So, I can bring in a
- 3:09bathroom image, resize it, and I can
- 3:12bring in um maybe this bookcase image as
- 3:15well. And again, I can resize those.
- 3:17Now, what about if I want to change
- 3:19those images in some way? Well, let's
- 3:22click on this one. And I can go over
- 3:23here and I can do a number of things.
- 3:25So, let's say the image came in a bit
- 3:28grainy. I can upscale that image. So, I
- 3:30just need to click on there. Upscale is
- 3:32one of the AI tools. So, that basically
- 3:34samples that image and upscales it. So,
- 3:36that just takes a second.
- 3:39So, there we go. That's the upscaled
- 3:40version. You can see the [music] quality
- 3:42is spot on. And that just replaces that
- 3:44image. Let's say, for example, I didn't
- 3:46like the tone of um the tiles. like I
- 3:49like the texture but maybe the tone is a
- 3:51little bit off. So again I can go into
- 3:53this image and I can change the
- 3:56exposure. I can change the contrast
- 3:57[music] and the saturation. So you know
- 3:59I can make the image a bit lighter for
- 4:01example can bring the contrast up or
- 4:03down and I can increase or [music]
- 4:05decrease the saturation. So just like
- 4:07you would with any tool like Photoshop
- 4:09for example, we can make those
- 4:10amendments all within rayon. The other
- 4:12thing I can do is import an image from a
- 4:14website for example. So, let's say we
- 4:16open up another window and I just search
- 4:18for U 1970 [music] style interior
- 4:22design. I can go to Google images. Um,
- 4:25and I can add in something that looks
- 4:27about [music] right. Maybe this one. So,
- 4:29I can literally just rightclick, copy
- 4:31image, and then I can paste it directly
- 4:34into Rayon if I want to. So, that speeds
- 4:36up the process quite a lot. So, I can
- 4:38just, you know, go through different
- 4:39mediums, different websites, just copy
- 4:41and paste those directly into [music]
- 4:43Rayon. The other really helpful thing I
- 4:45can do is if I double click on the
- 4:46image, I get these little pointers
- 4:48[music] which I can then drag down. So
- 4:50that allows me to crop out parts of the
- 4:52image for example. So I can do that and
- 4:54then I can still resize it based on that
- 4:56cropped image size. [music] So that's
- 4:58really helpful if I'm putting together
- 5:00this sort of mood board. Okay, but what
- 5:02about if you wanted a material swatch
- 5:04for example? Well, I like to do these
- 5:06slightly differently as circles that sit
- 5:08on top of the images, the precedent
- 5:10images. So we can create a circle. just
- 5:12literally [music]
- 5:12drag and pull and then you'll see it has
- 5:14a solid color currently. So these
- 5:17different shapes can have a solid fill,
- 5:18gradient fill, texture, hatch or an
- 5:21image. [music]
- 5:22So we can look at this, we can upload an
- 5:25image which has a texture on it and then
- 5:26that sits within that sort of crop
- 5:28boundary of the shape. So you know I
- 5:30think that looks really good next to
- 5:33this different array of [music] shape.
- 5:34And we can do that with any other
- 5:35material you see fit. So again we'll
- 5:37create a shape. I'll swap that image.
- 5:39We'll find my alternate material, which
- 5:42is a stone texture. And again, I can
- 5:44start laying these things out. Yeah,
- 5:46maybe I need to give them a little bit
- 5:47more space.
- 5:49Yeah, I think hopefully you agree it all
- 5:51[music] starting to come together. And
- 5:53we can do exactly the same thing with
- 5:55our external materials. So, I've got my
- 5:57pre-made sheet over here again. And
- 5:59again, we can import an image. So, let's
- 6:02import this image, a nice balcony space
- 6:05with our timber slats. That suits really
- 6:08well. Again, we've got this sort of
- 6:10similar idea with this rich timber, the
- 6:13light colored overhangs. And again, you
- 6:16know, maybe something maybe something a
- 6:18little bit different that has a brick
- 6:20texture. And you know, as before, we can
- 6:22go to any website that we choose for.
- 6:24Sudden
- 6:26home, find something. Yeah, like this.
- 6:30Looks good. And again, [music] I can
- 6:31just copy and paste that in. Exactly the
- 6:34same thing with the materials. So, you
- 6:37know, say I want a different material
- 6:39here. Upload. You know, maybe I've got
- 6:41this image of a light colored brick.
- 6:43And, you know, maybe that's come in a
- 6:44little bit dark. So, again, I can
- 6:46increase my exposure over here. Choose
- 6:49my contrast maybe. And just like with
- 6:51tools like Illustrator or Photoshop, I
- 6:53can change [music] that where my layers.
- 6:56So, I just need to right click on the
- 6:57shape. I go to arrange and I can say
- 6:59bring to front of layer. And then that
- 7:01can sit in that composition. So
- 7:03hopefully you can see that sort of thing
- 7:05coming together very quickly. But what
- 7:08about introducing AI? So we've touched
- 7:10on AI slightly, but we can use it in a
- 7:12number of different ways to really
- 7:14[music] reinforce the ideas of our
- 7:16concept boards. So I could just create
- 7:18an image. So I could say create [music]
- 7:22a material veneer
- 7:29for [music] example.
- 7:32Perfect. So again, I can preview that
- 7:35and I can insert that if I want to. So
- 7:37that sits well alongside the rest of my
- 7:39images. Again, I can upscale that if I
- 7:42want to [music] um and I can adjust um
- 7:44just as per all the other elements. The
- 7:47other thing I can do in these images is
- 7:49to adjust them with the [music] AI tool.
- 7:51So let's take this one for example. I
- 7:53can right click on the image and I can
- 7:55say reference in chat. So that then
- 7:57takes [music] that image and it pastes
- 7:58it down here. And then that becomes the
- 8:00subject of my chat and I can say
- 8:02something like, "Can [music] you make
- 8:05this a nighttime?"
- 8:10There you are. So that just starts to
- 8:12give it a different feel [music] than
- 8:13before. And again, I can insert that. I
- 8:15can scale it. Move that one. Then I can
- 8:18arrange. And then [music]
- 8:20Yeah, there. That's good. You can also
- 8:22use the chat to change different
- 8:24elements within those images as well. So
- 8:27take this one for example. Again I can
- 8:28click on the image or right click on it
- 8:30and I say reference [music] in chat and
- 8:32I can say can you change the fed a 2D
- 8:38early
- 8:40morning.
- 8:42So maybe I want to start thinking about
- 8:43how the different tones [music] match
- 8:45within the images. And whereas I enjoy
- 8:48the the timber work in the bedroom,
- 8:49maybe the the covers aren't quite right.
- 8:51So we can tweak that. There we have. And
- 8:54if I wasn't quite happy with that, I
- 8:55could say [music] um actually
- 9:01add a [music] light strip
- 9:05light.
- 9:10There we go. Yeah, that works. So again,
- 9:13I can bring that down [music]
- 9:15and I can replace.
- 9:17Yeah. Yeah. And then you're picking up
- 9:19the on those similar tones. We can even
- 9:21do things like change the furniture
- 9:22within the image. So let's say this one,
- 9:24for example, I wasn't happy with the um
- 9:26the chair that's being shown. So I could
- 9:28go and find uh [music] a new chair,
- 9:31exterior
- 9:34chair, for example. Um maybe it
- 9:37something like that, a bit brighter. So
- 9:39I can copy that into [music] rayon and I
- 9:42can say right click on here we'll
- 9:44reference that on the chat and again I
- 9:46can right click on here [music]
- 9:47reference that in the chat and then I
- 9:48can say replace the existing shapel
- 9:54[music]
- 9:55read this
- 9:58yellow sh
- 10:03we go
- 10:05perfect so I can insert the image edge
- 10:09can do with this one
- 10:13and I can place that in. I mean funny
- 10:15enough we can also even um remove
- 10:17[music] the background from this chair
- 10:19for example. So that's another one of
- 10:20the AI tools which is done there and I
- 10:23could you know start playing with the
- 10:27layering of that [music] as well. You
- 10:28know I quite like the the sort of
- 10:30multi-layered approach. I think it works
- 10:32quite well when you're thinking about
- 10:34lots of different ideas in a kind of
- 10:36fluid and rough way. Okay. So hopefully
- 10:38you can see those are looking good. The
- 10:40next thing I want to talk about is using
- 10:43the AI [music] tools to maybe bring some
- 10:46of our elevations and sections to life.
- 10:48So we've got this section which you know
- 10:50wants to work with the kind of the
- 10:52interior concept mood board here. We've
- 10:54got this elevation that wants to work
- 10:55with this one. So we can do a number of
- 10:57things. So I'll just start [music] a new
- 10:59thread. And if I want to add this image,
- 11:01all I need to do is press add content,
- 11:03[music] do add screenshot, and I can
- 11:05take a screenshot of my section. Then
- 11:07Rayon has a number of built-in tools
- 11:09[music] for the AI panel. So generate
- 11:12image, generate tracing, generate
- 11:14product or stylize. So I want to stylize
- 11:16this and I [music] want to try a render
- 11:18realistic look and feel. So press send.
- 11:22We'll see what it gives us. All right.
- 11:23So you can see that here. Yeah. Yeah,
- 11:25that looks great. So again, I can insert
- 11:27that image [music] and I can pop that
- 11:30down here as a sort of, you know, sneak
- 11:33peek of how it could look. And I can do
- 11:34exactly the same [music] thing with the
- 11:36elevation. So again, I just want to take
- 11:38a screenshot. I'll go to tools, go to
- 11:41stylize, and I'll go to render.
- 11:46Yeah. Yeah, that's good. So again, I can
- 11:48insert a image, reduce it down,
- 11:52so it sits as a little bit of a snippet
- 11:54um of that idea of how these things
- 11:56[music] might end up. And hopefully
- 11:58you'll agree that these three pages as a
- 12:01sort of continuation of the idea of
- 12:03these are the sort of themes for the
- 12:04internal, these are the themes for the
- 12:06external [music]
- 12:07and then these are the drawings and this
- 12:08is how we imagine it might end up
- 12:10looking like a pretty sort of compelling
- 12:12set. Okay. And with those sheets coming
- 12:14[music] together we can do a number of
- 12:16things. So we could start to add you
- 12:18know text elements. So um
- 12:22library
- 12:24says for example I can change the size
- 12:27of these change the position I can
- 12:29change the font over here I can change
- 12:32the color maybe something a little bit
- 12:34lighter and then I can save that as a
- 12:38style and I'll call that
- 12:40attention sample then I can just add
- 12:44notes as I see fit similar we can do the
- 12:48same for the external So say
- 12:51I don't know terraces example
- 12:56you need to character it let's say we
- 13:00can give these [music] drawings titles
- 13:02size
- 13:04and section
- 13:08external
- 13:11elevation. So obviously we can refine
- 13:13that as we see fit, but there's a couple
- 13:15of things that we can do to either share
- 13:17this with our team or share this with
- 13:19our client. So first of all, let's talk
- 13:20about getting comments from the rest of
- 13:22your team. And that's a really powerful
- 13:24element [music] of Rayon. So what we
- 13:26want to do is go to the share button. So
- 13:28that's over in this right hand corner.
- 13:30And I can grant access with my
- 13:33colleagues, with my boss, with um
- 13:36another [music] subconsultant for
- 13:37example. So all I need to do is put in
- 13:39their email address. So, I'm going to
- 13:41use my own other personal uh studio
- 13:44email address and I can add them as an
- 13:46admin, as an editor, [music] or a
- 13:48viewer. So, say you wanted to ask your
- 13:50boss's opinion, for example. So, we can
- 13:52go to viewer and we'll press invite.
- 13:54[music]
- 13:55You can see that up here. Now, let's
- 13:57open up another window that I can sign
- 14:00in. Okay. So, I've logged in as my other
- 14:02identity. [music] And you can see here
- 14:04the models that have been shared with
- 14:06me. That's this one over here. So, I can
- 14:08access the model. and jump to a paper
- 14:11canvas. So now I'm looking at that same
- 14:15um paper canvas that I was working on a
- 14:16second ago. But I can click on things
- 14:18but I can't move them. So no matter how
- 14:20much I try I can't go in and start
- 14:23deleting things. What I can do is
- 14:25comment on things. So if you see over
- 14:27here in the the left hand side there is
- 14:29a comment. So I can add [music] a
- 14:32comment. So I can say not sure how about
- 14:35the turquoise
- 14:38color try something more
- 14:45say post and now [music] that will sit
- 14:47within rayon for other me to find out.
- 14:51Similarly I can um measure. So if I had
- 14:53drawings um I could measure those. I
- 14:55have meters so I can measure an area as
- 14:58well. This is my comment tool. But I
- 15:00also have annotation [music] for
- 15:01example. So, you know, if I wanted to, I
- 15:04can start annotating [music]
- 15:06onto the drawings. You know, I can say
- 15:09add this, take away this. I can, you
- 15:11know, add arrows. I can add [music] um
- 15:15circles around things or bubbles to my
- 15:17heart's intent. And you can see those
- 15:19there as well. Similarly, I can use both
- 15:21together. And I can, you know, draw
- 15:23someone's attention to it and write the
- 15:25comment change this
- 15:29um a figure table and chair for dining
- 15:35for example. We post that and as I said
- 15:37they will stay in rayon and [music] you
- 15:40know other me will be alerted to that.
- 15:42So let's jump back to the other side. So
- 15:44now you'll see I'm back in my original
- 15:46side and I can jump to comments and
- 15:48you'll see those comments there. So, I
- 15:50click on them, a little window appears.
- 15:52It shows me exactly where it's referring
- 15:54to [music]
- 15:55what it says. I can give it a reaction.
- 15:57So, thumbs up or, you know, puking if
- 16:00you want. Um, and I can also give it a
- 16:02reply saying, "Okay, it sounds [music]
- 16:05good. We'll update
- 16:08the image." And again, that back and
- 16:11forth stays in rayon. So, you've got a
- 16:13record of it. So, you know, if people
- 16:15change their mind, there's a record of
- 16:16when when that [music] happened.
- 16:18Similarly, I can see those annotations.
- 16:20If I click on them, I can see them and
- 16:22there's if there's a comment related to
- 16:23those annotations [music] and again I
- 16:25can see this and go okay
- 16:29couple which is perfect. All of that is
- 16:31in the browser. All of that you know is
- 16:33part of this sort of collaborative fluid
- 16:35>> [music]
- 16:35>> um process that you know stays where you
- 16:38are and obviously when I come out of the
- 16:40comments those thing disappear so you
- 16:42[music] know it's not interrupting the
- 16:44sort of visual language of of what I've
- 16:46done. So, you know, I can go back in, I
- 16:48can make those tweaks, everyone's happy,
- 16:50and I can keep that process ongoing
- 16:52until we get it right. Similarly, with
- 16:55our um sharing capabilities, which is up
- 16:58in this top right hand corner, not only
- 17:00can I share it with my team, I can share
- 17:01it with my client. [music] And the best
- 17:02way to do that is with a presentation.
- 17:04Now, you can export these as PGs, you
- 17:07can export them as PDFs, and you know,
- 17:09you can go to the effort of issuing
- 17:10those drawings, you can send file
- 17:12transfer links, and you know, take as
- 17:14much time as you like. or we can use the
- 17:16[music] presentation sharing
- 17:18capabilities within Ray. So all I need
- 17:20to do is swipe that little toggle and it
- 17:22gives me a link. So that link is a link
- 17:24to the presentation which is available
- 17:27online. Now I can copy that into a
- 17:29browser. Um and any changes it will
- 17:31retain that link. So it will always be
- 17:34up to date to my latest presentation. So
- 17:36I can open that directly here. You can
- 17:38see it takes a second. And then we have
- 17:40our presentation. So we have our sheets,
