Create and Sell Digital Notebooks Using Canva — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This is one of my printable planners
- 0:01that I created a couple of years ago for
- 0:04my online shop. It's super basic, really
- 0:07easy to create, and yet I still make
- 0:09sales from it today without putting in
- 0:12any additional effort. New sellers are
- 0:14coming into the space all the time
- 0:16generating hundreds of dollars from
- 0:18products like these. So, in this video,
- 0:20I'm going to show you exactly how to
- 0:22create and sell digital notebooks
- 0:24yourself using Canva. I'll also show you
- 0:27how to offer a physical version of your
- 0:29notebook at no cost to you, which will
- 0:31help you increase your sales. But,
- 0:33before we jump into that, I want to
- 0:35share a strategy that has really helped
- 0:37my products stand out from everyone
- 0:39else's in the same space, so you can
- 0:42implement it for yours as well. Most new
- 0:44sellers will go onto the marketplace
- 0:46they want to sell on, whether that's
- 0:48Etsy or Amazon, for example, type in the
- 0:51product idea they have in mind, and
- 0:53simply try to replicate the
- 0:55top-performing listings. But, the
- 0:57problem with this strategy is that it
- 0:59actually makes it much harder to make
- 1:01sales. Because when everyone is
- 1:03following the same process and copying
- 1:06the same ideas, all of the products
- 1:08start to blend together. Your listing
- 1:10ends up sitting in a sea of nearly
- 1:12identical options, and there's no clear
- 1:14reason for a shopper to choose yours
- 1:17over someone else's. Now, I'm not saying
- 1:19you need to reinvent the wheel or create
- 1:22something completely brand new, but what
- 1:24I am saying is that it helps to look for
- 1:26inspiration outside of the marketplace
- 1:29you plan to sell on. So, for today's
- 1:31planner example, even though it's going
- 1:32to be very simple for demonstration
- 1:35purposes, I'm actually taking some
- 1:36inspiration from my physical daily
- 1:39planner, which I got from Indigo, rather
- 1:41than copying a listing that would just
- 1:43end up sitting right beside mine on Etsy
- 1:45anyway. So, try visiting stationary
- 1:48stores or bookstores and looking through
- 1:50different planners and notebooks to get
- 1:53design inspiration. You'll find layouts
- 1:56and styles that aren't showing up as
- 1:58frequently online yet, which will help
- 2:00you stand out from the competition. So,
- 2:02let's jump into Canva to put this
- 2:04printable planner together. If you don't
- 2:06already have a Canva account, you can
- 2:07just sign up for free using your email,
- 2:10and I think they still have a 30-day
- 2:12free trial of their Pro plan available,
- 2:14so you can also test that out. So, I'm
- 2:16going to go to templates, and I'm
- 2:18actually going to design my planner
- 2:19using one of their pre-made templates. I
- 2:21find sometimes it's easier to do it this
- 2:23way rather than staring at a blank page.
- 2:26So, I'm going to type in daily planner
- 2:28and see what comes up. Okay, so I like
- 2:30this one. I'm going to customize this,
- 2:32but in order to use this one, you do
- 2:34need the Canva Pro plan. Otherwise, you
- 2:37could just choose one that doesn't have
- 2:39that crown icon. So, let's go ahead and
- 2:42click on this one, customize this
- 2:44template. Now, although I'm using this
- 2:46pre-made template, you're going to see
- 2:48how different it's going to look in the
- 2:49end, which I highly recommend you do as
- 2:52well. So, I'm going to start with
- 2:53deleting some of the features I don't
- 2:55like. So, I don't really like the
- 2:57border, and then all of these little
- 2:59extra features. I'm just going to go
- 3:01ahead
- 3:02>> [music]
- 3:02>> and delete all of them. Okay, so let's
- 3:04start with the top. I'm going to play
- 3:05around with the fonts and the sizes. So,
- 3:08let's click on daily planner, and you
- 3:10can change the font over here. Canva has
- 3:12a bunch of free fonts that you can use,
- 3:15or you can upload your own font if
- 3:17you're using Canva Pro. So, I'm going to
- 3:18change it to like a cursive font. Let's
- 3:21change this to daily plan, and I'm going
- 3:24to change the size. Make it a little bit
- 3:26smaller here. Okay, and then I'm going
- 3:28to move the date over to the left. Let's
- 3:31move these over here, and I'm actually
- 3:32going to group these together. So,
- 3:34group, so that they [music] kind of move
- 3:36around as one element, and I'm going to
- 3:38center this in the middle. So, let's go
- 3:39position and center. Okay, so I'm happy
- 3:43with that. Now, I'm going to choose what
- 3:45I actually want to go in my interior.
- 3:47So, maybe I'll change up some of these
- 3:49like subheadings. Instead of reminder,
- 3:52let's put in priorities, and let's make
- 3:55this section say I am grateful for.
- 3:58Okay, let's zoom out a little bit. So, I
- 4:01kind of want the schedule to be on the
- 4:02right side, and then the priorities to
- 4:04be on the left side. That's just kind of
- 4:06how I like my planners to be. So, let's
- 4:09move this over here, and then kind of
- 4:11swap everything over. Okay, so under
- 4:13to-do list, I'm going to just copy and
- 4:16paste, so just command C and command V.
- 4:18I'm going to bring this over to the
- 4:20priorities list, and let's just
- 4:22duplicate, so you can just go command D
- 4:24on your keyboard, and then duplicate
- 4:26again to put some check boxes under
- 4:29priorities. Okay, so before I play
- 4:31around with the sizing of all these
- 4:33boxes, I'm going to change the colors up
- 4:35a little bit. So, instead of like this
- 4:37olive green color, I'm going to make it
- 4:39a soft blue. So, let's go here.
- 4:42Actually, that looks really good. So,
- 4:43I'm going to select all the boxes that
- 4:46are olive green and change it to that
- 4:48color. So, if I just select this and
- 4:50then just hit shift on your keyboard and
- 4:52select all of these boxes and make it
- 4:55the same color.
- 5:02I'm pretty happy with this interior page
- 5:04design, and if you compare it to the
- 5:06original design, it looks very
- 5:07different, right? But, it sped up the
- 5:10process rather than designing it from
- 5:12scratch. Now, I'm going to create a
- 5:14cover page, just in case my customers
- 5:17want to print out the cover page and
- 5:19then multiple pages of the interior, and
- 5:22then they [music] can bind it and fill
- 5:24it out for themselves, right? So, let's
- 5:26go to add page right over here, and
- 5:28let's actually bring that up to the top.
- 5:30Let's go into elements, [music] and I
- 5:33have like a design in mind, so I'm going
- 5:34to go floral rainbow
- 5:37seamless
- 5:38>> [music]
- 5:38>> pattern. I'm going to go into graphics,
- 5:41and then just browse through to see if
- 5:43there are any like patterns that I
- 5:45really want for my cover. So, I found
- 5:48this one that I really like, and you can
- 5:49actually change up the colors. So, I'm
- 5:51going to match the color scheme to the
- 5:53interior pages. So, let's go ahead and
- 5:56play around a little bit with what this
- 5:58would look like. Okay, so that's really
- 6:00cute. Now, because this is a seamless
- 6:01pattern, you can just duplicate it, so
- 6:03command D, and then put it right beside
- 6:06it, and it just kind of it just
- 6:08continues the pattern. So, let's
- 6:09duplicate and bring it down to match it
- 6:13at the bottom there. So, now I have my
- 6:15cover, which I really, really like.
- 6:17Okay, so then back into elements, I want
- 6:19to bring up a rectangle, or you could
- 6:22just actually type in R on your
- 6:24keyboard, which will bring up a
- 6:25rectangle. Otherwise, you can go into
- 6:27shapes and then pull up a rectangle over
- 6:29here. Let's just make this a white,
- 6:33and
- 6:35I'm actually just going to go over here,
- 6:37command C, so then I could just command
- 6:40V, so copy it over, just because I want
- 6:42to use the same font, [music]
- 6:44and I'll call it daily planner. You can
- 6:46also add a border around your rectangle,
- 6:48so just go into stroke style, and
- 6:51[music] let's make this a little bit
- 6:52lighter,
- 6:54and you can change up the color as well.
- 6:56So, I'm really happy with this design. I
- 6:57think it looks really cute. This is my
- 6:59cover page, and it matches perfectly
- 7:01with my interior pages. When you're
- 7:03done, you can save it as a PDF file for
- 7:06the highest quality, and this is what
- 7:08your customers will receive immediately
- 7:11after they purchase your listing. Now,
- 7:13since you're already putting in the work
- 7:15to design your beautiful cover, you can
- 7:17also offer a physical planner in a
- 7:19separate listing to give that option to
- 7:21your customers with no extra work or
- 7:23costs on your end. By using a
- 7:25print-on-demand company like Printify,
- 7:28you just need to upload your cover
- 7:30design on any of notebook options, and
- 7:32once someone purchases your listing,
- 7:34Printify will create, package, and
- 7:37deliver your notebook to your customer.
- 7:39Printify is kindly sponsoring this
- 7:41video, so not only can you sign up and
- 7:43use their services entirely for free,
- 7:46but you get a 1-month free trial of
- 7:48their premium plan if you want to test
- 7:50out their features. Their premium plan
- 7:52allows you to keep costs even lower for
- 7:54your customers, so you'll have a huge
- 7:57competitive advantage over your
- 7:58competitors, and you can always switch
- 8:01back to their free plan if you prefer.
- 8:03Just click the link below and use code
- 8:05SandraD to access your free trial. So,
- 8:08save your cover page from Canva in a PNG
- 8:11or JPEG format, because that's all
- 8:13you'll need to create your
- 8:14print-on-demand notebook. And once
- 8:16you've done that, you can head over to
- 8:18Printify's catalog from their home page,
- 8:20and under home and living, you'll see a
- 8:22section for journals and notebooks.
- 8:25There are many different options to
- 8:27choose from, but I'm going to select the
- 8:29hardcover journal right over here. And
- 8:31just to clarify, if you're offering a
- 8:33physical planner option, this would
- 8:35simply be a separate listing in your
- 8:37shop where the interior would be these
- 8:40basic lined pages that Printify
- 8:42provides. So, scroll down and click on
- 8:44start designing, and this is basically
- 8:46your artboard that you can drag your
- 8:48designs into. This one specifically
- 8:50needs a back cover design, so I just
- 8:53duplicated my Canva front cover and
- 8:55removed the daily planner text. It looks
- 8:58super cute, in my opinion, and you can
- 9:00preview it with this button on the top
- 9:02right to make sure you're super happy
- 9:04with the placement. And as long as your
- 9:06shop is integrated with your Printify
- 9:08account, you can automatically upload
- 9:11your physical planner, and anytime you
- 9:13make a sale, Printify will get notified
- 9:16to create and deliver that product to
- 9:18your customer. Now, I have two huge pro
- 9:20tips for you that's going to help you
- 9:22make more sales when shoppers land on
- 9:25your listings. First, you probably
- 9:27already know that your listing images
- 9:29matter just as much as the product
- 9:31itself. Since it's a digital product,
- 9:34shoppers are relying on your images to
- 9:37make their purchase decisions. [music]
- 9:38Now, of course, you can get beautiful
- 9:40mockups from Canva. You would simply
- 9:42click on templates,
- 9:44>> [music]
- 9:44>> type in planner mockup, and you'll find
- 9:46some free ones and pro ones to use as
- 9:48well. But, the problem is that many
- 9:50people are using the exact same mockups,
- 9:53and therefore, they're kind of all
- 9:55blending in together. So, to help your
- 9:57design stand out, you can go on to
- 9:59Create a Fabric app. I'll leave a link
- 10:01below where you can sign up for free if
- 10:03you don't already have an account.
- 10:04You'll actually get your first 10
- 10:06downloads completely free, and you can
- 10:08cancel at any time. If you're planning
- 10:10to sell your notebook on Etsy, type in
- 10:13the search bar Etsy planner mock-up.
- 10:15You'll see many amazing planner mock-up
- 10:18bundles that not only give you different
- 10:20options on how to showcase your planner,
- 10:23but they also offer infographics that
- 10:25you can customize. These are images to
- 10:27clarify what your listing includes, so
- 10:30your customers know exactly what they're
- 10:31getting. Alternatively, you can also
- 10:34find planner mock-up bundles on Etsy.
- 10:36They're all super affordable, and in my
- 10:38opinion, they're worth the small
- 10:40investment to help your planner stand
- 10:42out from everyone else's. Now, I saved
- 10:44the best pro tip for last. This is a
- 10:47super easy trick that I highly recommend
- 10:50you implement in at least one of your
- 10:52product images. Show your planner pages
- 10:55filled out by using a handwriting font
- 10:58in Canva. So, go to their font library,
- 11:01select handwriting, and pick the one you
- 11:03like. Make the text a different color,
- 11:05so it looks like a pen, whether it's
- 11:07blue, purple, pink, whatever will help
- 11:10it stand out. It may sound super
- 11:11obvious, but people love to see a
- 11:13demonstration of how to use your
- 11:15planner. And showing it fully filled out
- 11:18like this almost helps them visualize
- 11:21how they're going to make the most of
- 11:23it. So, this is what it would look like
- 11:24if I had mine completely filled out, and
- 11:27this is how I would place it in one of
- 11:30my planner mock-ups. Pretty cool, right?
- 11:32Make sure to sign up for Printify
- 11:33entirely for free using the link below,
- 11:35and use code Sandra D at checkout for a
- 11:381-month free trial of their premium
- 11:40plan. You can always switch back to
- 11:42their free plan if you prefer. You can
- 11:45head over to this video next where I
- 11:47share how to create low-ticket ebooks
- 11:49and sell them online. So, I'll see you
- 11:51there.
