Create a Site Plan FAST — The Easy Way — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone. Today we're going to look
- 0:02at how to do a site plan the easy way.
- 0:04Let's walk through a site analysis
- 0:05project together show you how to speed
- 0:07up the process by using Rayon design
- 0:10template. You can grab this template for
- 0:12free through the link in description.
- 0:14Now let's go to a browser and type
- 0:16rayon.design where you can create a free
- 0:18account or simply sign in. After signing
- 0:22in from the rayon dashboard, you can
- 0:24choose one of the pre-made templates or
- 0:26create a new model which we're going to
- 0:28do in this case.
- 0:30And let's start by importing a base PDF
- 0:33plans. Go to import PDF. Select your
- 0:37file
- 0:40and let's add it as a
- 0:44vector. Ran will prompt you to scale the
- 0:47plan. So what we can do is zoom into a
- 0:50known reference point. For example, we
- 0:53know that this segment here is 1 m long.
- 0:55So we'll type in one. Continue.
- 0:59and then import and press shift zed to
- 1:04automatically zoom into the extent of
- 1:06the
- 1:07drawing. It's that easy. And next, we'll
- 1:10import a second plan or a larger context
- 1:13area. But to keep things organized, we
- 1:15will add a new model canvas and name it
- 1:20map one to one.
- 1:25Then simply again go to import
- 1:28PDF to your drawing and import as
- 1:33vector. We're going to repeat the
- 1:35process of scaling
- 1:40it. And this time we'll use the 100 m
- 1:44reference point down below. And down
- 1:47here. Perfect. Yeah, we know it's 100.
- 1:49And we can click continue. Import. And
- 1:56And just like that, both of the plans
- 1:58are now in in this project. But now we
- 2:00will bring in the site analysis symbol
- 2:02template to help us annotate our plans.
- 2:06And let's head back to the original
- 2:09crayon dashboard. Then open the
- 2:11templates section and type in
- 2:15site. And let's choose the site analysis
- 2:18symbols. And we can simply double click
- 2:20on it to to open it.
- 2:25These templates include everything you
- 2:27might need like icons,
- 2:29hatches, all ready to use. But what
- 2:32we're going to do is we're just going to
- 2:33select all of it, right click, copy as
- 2:37export, and switch back to our import
- 2:40plans and and just copy and paste them
- 2:44here. Right click
- 2:47uh and paste. And yeah, we can simply
- 2:50just take them and move them out of the
- 2:57way. And next, we'll actually adjust the
- 3:00layering of our symbols. So, when
- 3:04selecting the template, uh you will
- 3:06notice that some of the icons are
- 3:08currently in the import blocks layers.
- 3:10So, let's click and just drag them up to
- 3:14style example layer instead. Now we can
- 3:16see that uh all the icons and symbols
- 3:21are sitting above above the drawing. And
- 3:25we can also rename this the layer to
- 3:27site analysis uh symbols uh just simply
- 3:31for
- 3:33clarity. And next before we start
- 3:35analyzing the plan we can edit the style
- 3:37of the symbols. So we will just click to
- 3:40style panel and hover over the icon and
- 3:42click edit and adjust the fill to
- 3:45reddish hue or or any other color that
- 3:49pops and creates a nice contrast with
- 3:51the gray base plan that we that we
- 3:55imported. We can simply go and repeat
- 3:57the same process of adjusting the the
- 3:59stroke and and the fill on the edit
- 4:03panel.
- 4:14[Music]
- 4:31Yeah, the last one.
- 4:34And and that's it. Now we can start
- 4:37analyzing the plan. Our site is um is
- 4:42the building in in the middle of the of
- 4:44the plan. This one here. And I'll
- 4:46highlight the plot area using the zone
- 4:48tool. I'll change the layer to site
- 4:51analysis
- 4:52symbol. I'll also find an existing
- 4:55building hatch which was part of the
- 4:58template just copied in. And then we'll
- 5:01zoom in and trace the part from H to H
- 5:06just like
- 5:08this. Perfect. And yeah. And then when
- 5:11you're done, we can press
- 5:13enter. Very nice. One last trick. Let's
- 5:17select all the symbols. Uh right click
- 5:20and go to arrange and choose bring to
- 5:23front and bring to front with the layer.
- 5:27That way nothing hides behind a hatch, a
- 5:30tree or or a building line. So like
- 5:36this, we can start animating and adding
- 5:39icons. I know there are a couple of bus
- 5:41stops in on the site, but there's one
- 5:43here below. Here's another one on
- 5:46opposite side of the street closer to
- 5:47the site and another one up top in this
- 5:51direction.
- 5:53There's a parking in this square behind
- 5:56the trees. There's no train stations,
- 5:58but but I think there is a taxi spot
- 6:01near the park for drop off
- 6:05uh groups of
- 6:06friends
- 6:09and and then also has a park and a
- 6:12gathering. So, we can also include
- 6:14that.
- 6:17Let's group icon and a park just behind
- 6:22our site. And I know there's also a
- 6:27school or educational institution just
- 6:30here. And I remember opposite the school
- 6:32there was a grocery store as well. I
- 6:35know all these locations and where to
- 6:37put these symbols because I've actually
- 6:38visited this site. Uh, but if you
- 6:40haven't had a chance to do so yourself,
- 6:42you can still find information for your
- 6:44site using Google or Apple Maps, Open
- 6:47Street Map, or even websites like Zunker
- 6:49and Sun movement from
- 6:52suncal.org. They're all great ways to
- 6:54get an accurate sense of the context
- 6:56when you're preparing your analysis
- 6:58remotely. Okay, now let's bring in the
- 7:00sun path. This one here, I think, looks
- 7:02great. And we can and even scale
- 7:06it and rotate it 30° to show the sun
- 7:10movement from from east to
- 7:13west and position it. Yeah, I think
- 7:17looks great. This is
- 7:19good. Let's maybe make a little bit some
- 7:21small tweaks. Let's adjust the color the
- 7:24edit panel to this red
- 7:27hue
- 7:29and even the the stroke of it. And maybe
- 7:33let's fix these
- 7:36edges.
- 7:38Yeah, they're much
- 7:40better. In our case, the wind is coming
- 7:42from the northeast. So, we can add them
- 7:44here on the
- 7:50[Music]
- 7:53top. Also add two symbols. But these
- 7:56symbols seem a little bit faint. H. So,
- 7:58I'll go to edit style and darkened
- 8:02stroke for a better visibility, like a
- 8:05darker blue. Yes, much much better. And
- 8:08and finally, let's add a noise
- 8:10level indicators. We might have one from
- 8:14around the the park, one from the from
- 8:16the junction, and and the opposite side
- 8:20from from the road as well.
- 8:24But I think overall gives us a pretty
- 8:26complete picture of the site. And what
- 8:29we're going to do now is create the
- 8:30legend from the icons we've just used so
- 8:33everyone can
- 8:34understand what each symbol means. We
- 8:38can group them below the scale bar. It
- 8:41might look a bit messy at first, but uh
- 8:43we will we'll organize them just in a
- 8:45second.
- 8:47[Music]
- 8:58[Music]
- 9:03[Music]
- 9:13Yeah. Okay. So, select the legends and
- 9:16go over to modify panel on the right
- 9:18hand side. Click downward facing arrow
- 9:21and align everything to the center. And
- 9:23also make sure everything's vertically
- 9:25aligned so it's nice and tidy. And we
- 9:27could repeat the same process for the
- 9:29second
- 9:31group and centered. Great. And let's add
- 9:34a label. I'm just reusing text from the
- 9:37original template. this next to first
- 9:47icon and even rename it. We can call
- 9:50this location point. Set the text to a
- 9:54middle alignment so it's always centered
- 9:56to the symbol
- 9:57itself. Then just hold alt and drag it
- 10:00to duplicate the the text across the
- 10:02other icons.
- 10:08We can also add the noise source and and
- 10:10the wind
- 10:19direction. Some of them are a bit
- 10:22oversized, but uh but I'll first place
- 10:25them here and and then tweak the size
- 10:27the
- 10:29scale. Now, we didn't really use the
- 10:31viewpoint, but we can position here just
- 10:33across the straight from the side. So,
- 10:35that could be a nice uh angle.
- 10:45Don't be afraid to tweak the size or the
- 10:48scale of these
- 10:57icons. Uh centered and vertically again.
- 11:11some path is courage and yeah again
- 11:14let's take text and copy it
- 11:17over we can go now I'm going to also
- 11:20rename all the symbols and we'll start
- 11:22with this bus stop you can rename it
- 11:25with double clicking there and next one
- 11:27is parking
- 11:29parking then we have a taxi
- 11:35Stop.
- 11:45Park. Yeah. Grocery
- 11:48store
- 11:49[Music]
- 11:52and
- 11:58school. Nice sourced.
- 12:11view point
- 12:13and and finally sound
- 12:17[Music]
- 12:19path. Yep, I think it's looking good.
- 12:22I'll draw a rectangle around the whole
- 12:25legend just to just to frame it nicely
- 12:28and keep things uh organized and
- 12:33[Music]
- 12:36readable. Oh, uh and I also forgot the
- 12:39to add the north sign. I'll choose this
- 12:42one. Rotate it 30° so that it aligns
- 12:45with the sun path direction we set
- 12:47earlier here. Yeah, perfect. Now we have
- 12:51a completely clear and visually engaging
- 12:53site analysis. It's a symbols and a
- 12:55legend. And now we can start preparing
- 12:57the drawing for printing. So we'll head
- 12:59over to paper canvas
- 13:02on on the layers
- 13:04tab and create a new page and make this
- 13:09[Music]
- 13:11page and into a A1 size.
- 13:15To get our plans to appear here, we will
- 13:18use view tool from the panel below. And
- 13:21under the active property, choose model
- 13:23canvas to import the side analysis we
- 13:26just
- 13:29did. And then draw the portal anywhere
- 13:32you want the plan to
- 13:38appear. Scale the plan to fit into the
- 13:41view if needed. and then double click on
- 13:43the view to pan and
- 13:48position. To avoid accidentally moving
- 13:51the plan, I'll click disable, zoom, and
- 13:54pan on the
- 13:56view. And I'll hold shift and open up
- 13:59the portal a little bit wider or the
- 14:02view just to make sure that everything
- 14:04sits nicely on the on the page. Okay,
- 14:08great. Let's do the same thing for the
- 14:10context map as well. We this time we can
- 14:13go to context
- 14:15map
- 14:17new and map one to one. It does exactly
- 14:20the same yet another
- 14:34method and double click on it. And we
- 14:37can even scale it one to 100. So we get
- 14:39a get good sense of the broader side
- 14:43context. We're a little bit here on the
- 14:45north north
- 14:49corner. Great. And just click
- 14:54done. Let's add the symbol legend here
- 14:57too. We can hold alt and drag the
- 15:00previous view just here under the
- 15:03context plan. Double click and unlock
- 15:07panning and navigate where that legend
- 15:09sits on the mold canvas and position it
- 15:12just under the context plan. So all the
- 15:16key information is presented in one
- 15:17coherent layout.
- 15:33Okay, I think it's already coming
- 15:34together quite
- 15:40well. Uh, let's add a an annotation box.
- 15:45Add key information like the project
- 15:47made, the description, and kind of
- 15:51overarching
- 15:53idea. And that will we can
- 15:56quickly rescale the latex
- 16:00box so it fits uh not in
- 16:03[Music]
- 16:14it. Okay, I think it's coming together.
- 16:16I think this looks quite clean and and
- 16:18pretty much ready to go.
- 16:21And next thing is to to make this head
- 16:23analysis more useful. We will add a
- 16:26building type map using the wider
- 16:29context drawing we just imported at the
- 16:31beginning. We will start by creating a
- 16:33legend that explains the areas zoning
- 16:36and menus. With the rectangle tool, we
- 16:38will draw a base panel. Here it's in a
- 16:41corner and give it a white fill so it
- 16:45hovers clearly over the plan.
- 16:48Next, we can add a
- 16:50title text and we'll label
- 16:55it building type
- 17:04map. Also tweak the box a little bit too
- 17:08so for the label to fit. And add the
- 17:10reddish color for consistency again and
- 17:13contrast.
- 17:16Yeah, this is
- 17:20great. Now, let's uh build the legend
- 17:23keys. Let's add a first base rectangle
- 17:27with a rectangle tool. And just just
- 17:33[Music]
- 17:38here we got the text label. So, res
- 17:42start with residential. Oops.
- 17:43Residential.
- 17:46And okay. And maybe make it a little bit
- 17:48smaller.
- 17:500.5. Perfect. I'll hold out alt to
- 17:54duplicate the hatchboxes and their
- 17:57labels for four more
- 18:02times. Shift these things around.
- 18:16Yeah, but it's gone better. It's nice
- 18:18and and and tidy. Okay, once that is
- 18:21done, let's rename each label. And we'll
- 18:23start first with the
- 18:26business
- 18:32center
- 18:37commercial
- 18:41educational and lastly uh
- 18:47site. For the site I'll change the the
- 18:50fill to a pattern.
- 18:55Uh, this one looks great. And make it
- 18:58again a reddish
- 19:01hue. And adjust the scale on our
- 19:03transformation to to something like uh
- 19:0705. So the pattern isn't too wide or too
- 19:10dense. And we can also save this style
- 19:13as a side context hatch on the right
- 19:16side for for reuse.
- 19:21Let's go ahead and create new hatch
- 19:23styles for other land uses too. For
- 19:25example, a lighter red for education, a
- 19:29muted red for commercial, soft red for
- 19:32business
- 19:33center, and a
- 19:35natural gray tone for residential. Then
- 19:39again, save each style.
- 20:05For this residential, we can
- 20:08actually use
- 20:10the eyro tool to pick one of the colors
- 20:14from the map. of one of the buildings
- 20:16and and just leave it as adapt. I think
- 20:18this is
- 20:19great. Now let's start to apply these
- 20:22styles these hashes we just created by
- 20:24double clicking on the map EU and select
- 20:26a couple of buildings.
- 20:46then assign the style to a corresponding
- 20:50use. But normally you would look up this
- 20:53information again on Google Maps or Open
- 20:55Street Map to get a reliable land use
- 20:58data and to know where it is
- 21:04[Music]
- 21:06what once once selected
- 21:10again we can go to these four dots style
- 21:12and assign a correct patch style for for
- 21:15each
- 21:16building. And we can go ahead and repeat
- 21:19repeat the process for of selecting
- 21:21buildings, replace them all and
- 21:23assigning land use
- 21:33again. Yeah, as a cherry on top. Uh with
- 21:37the circle tool, we will draw an
- 21:39approximate site location here. So, pick
- 21:42a circle tool and and locate side
- 21:46context hatch under uh the four
- 21:50dots. Yeah, perfect. This one here. And
- 21:54draw a circle right about here in the
- 21:58corner. Great. Okay, this is perfect for
- 22:00now. In a few minutes, we've made a
- 22:02context map with a clear legend that
- 22:04explains the surrounding neighborhood.
- 22:06Awesome. So, next one. To track things
- 22:08out, let's go to add a title block. Go
- 22:10to
- 22:12blocks, then open the library and type
- 22:15of block. You can select any of the
- 22:17templates available. Just click on it
- 22:19and drag and drop it in directly onto
- 22:21our
- 22:22page. Once it is in uh let's position to
- 22:26the bottom
- 22:28corner in A1 layout and I can just grab
- 22:32it by accept it, grab it right corner to
- 22:34scale it so it fits perfectly from edge
- 22:36to edge. and double click on it to
- 22:39delete some unnecessary information. And
- 22:42we'll rename this drawing into site
- 22:47plan. Perfect. And it's going to be
- 22:49based in beautiful city of
- 22:52Paris. Great. Also, we
- 22:56can can maybe change this. Actually, we
- 22:59don't even need this. The north stars,
- 23:01we already have it in
- 23:04there. So, now it looks great. Let's
- 23:07move on to the finale and export our
- 23:09drawing as a as a
- 23:13PDF. I head over to the page panel.
- 23:16You'll see on the left, click on
- 23:20the on the three dots and export PDF.
- 23:25Head preview window will pop up here
- 23:27with the magnifier. Peek into the
- 23:28different parts of the draw. You can
- 23:29double check the line weight, colors,
- 23:32and text clarity. If needed, you can
- 23:34also adjust more advanced settings like
- 23:37the the stroke weight for page or
- 23:42screen. I'm happy with how it sits and
- 23:45we can simply hit export. And that's it.
- 23:49That's as simple as that. In a short
- 23:50tutorial, we went from a basic site plan
- 23:52to a beautiful site analysis plan using
- 23:55Rayon template.
- 23:58This is how Rion removes the unnecessary
- 24:00complexity of traditional CAD software
- 24:02so you can focus on design rather than
- 24:05troubleshooting tools. If you like to
- 24:07try it out yourself, don't forget to
