CQB | Drills To Make You Faster — Transcript

- 0:00Today on American Outlaw, we have a
- 0:02special guest. He's going to show you
- 0:04the six CQB drills you need to master
- 0:07before you ever enter a CQB kill house.
- 0:11This is my buddy Phil. Phil, thanks for
- 0:13coming on the show, bro.
- 0:14No problem, brother.
- 0:15Hey, tell everybody who you are, what
- 0:17you do, why you're here.
- 0:18Yeah, so uh spent eight years in the
- 0:20Navy, did some time with the SEAL teams.
- 0:22I was a sniper. We're going to be
- 0:23talking about CQB drills that we can do
- 0:26on a flat range so that we can kind of
- 0:28get more comfortable with it before we
- 0:30actually enter our house, start doing
- 0:31sim, four on four, stuff like that.
- 0:33Yeah. So, I I figure if you're going to
- 0:35learn, you want to learn from from the
- 0:36best. And um we know that the team guys
- 0:39are some of the best that the country
- 0:41has to offer. And uh so it's it's really
- 0:43cool getting to hang out with them. It's
- 0:45really cool getting to see, you know,
- 0:47currently what things are doing. You
- 0:48know, war changes and TTPs change. And
- 0:52so it's nice to see somebody who's just
- 0:54now getting out starting their own
- 0:56business. What's what's your business?
- 0:57Yeah. So we do a lot of uh firearms
- 0:59instruction. And basically we start at
- 1:02that beginner level. We work to the
- 1:04intermediates and then we do some more
- 1:05of the advanced side of things. This
- 1:07tends to get into the more advanced
- 1:08side, but we want to break it down
- 1:10starting with the beginning baseline
- 1:12methods of shooting in a CQB situation,
- 1:15if you want to call it that. So these
- 1:16drills aren't anything super fancy.
- 1:18We're talking more about shooting in a
- 1:21situation where it would present itself
- 1:22to us in a structure, right? And we're
- 1:25going to go live fire on the range
- 1:26today. You can do this on your flat
- 1:27range. You can do it with Mantis. You
- 1:29can do it with Sims, uh, UTM, whatever
- 1:31you have access to. But this builds a
- 1:33baseline so that when you go and you
- 1:35take a course, you feel more comfortable
- 1:36with kind of that shooting and moving
- 1:38through a structure. This is for most
- 1:41people who are flat range people.
- 1:43Everything that we're about to show you
- 1:45is very advanced. So, beginning for for
- 1:50shooters that have done this a long
- 1:51time, but for most of you, I think
- 1:53you're going to be unbelievably
- 1:54surprised. So, stick around to the very
- 1:56end for the six CQB drills you must
- 1:59master before you enter a kill house.
- 2:02You can see we've set this up. This is
- 2:05any flat range that you can get to where
- 2:07you're allowed to shoot and move on it
- 2:08like we have out here. These are
- 2:10creating faux walls, right? Not
- 2:12everybody has access to a kill house.
- 2:14So, in order to do these drills safely,
- 2:17we got a place with the burm in the
- 2:18background. We built basically target
- 2:21walls. Here's our door jambs. Pretend
- 2:24these are in for infinity, right? So,
- 2:26the drills are going to be based off of
- 2:27what we create here. So, the purpose of
- 2:29this drill, what we tend to see is when
- 2:31we're doing that lateral movement, so
- 2:33what we would call the pie in the door,
- 2:35we don't get a lot of practice with that
- 2:37movement with that low modified low
- 2:39ready into a shot. Bam. Bam. And we keep
- 2:42moving through. So, my body position is
- 2:45a little bit different than if I was
- 2:46standing just on a standard flat range
- 2:48shooting like this. Everything's squared
- 2:50up is how I normally do it. If I'm going
- 2:52to start walking a door, my body
- 2:54position is completely different. So, I
- 2:56got a little bit more of a blade to try
- 2:58to minimize exposure to anything that's
- 3:00in that room. And as I'm moving, the gun
- 3:02is not on the sights. It's at that
- 3:03modified load. There's a target. I can
- 3:05shoot from here. Now, I'm coming back
- 3:06down. As I continue my scan, the body
- 3:08position is going to change depending on
- 3:11what we see inside of the room and what
- 3:13kind of wall space we have on the
- 3:15backside here. So, if I can get that
- 3:16wide bubble, I'm going to take it. If we
- 3:19can't, we got to shorten it up here and
- 3:21treat it like a hallway and we'll cover
- 3:22down on that when Trey gets into the
- 3:23shooting piece here. One real easy thing
- 3:25to work on, even out here on a flat
- 3:27range, we're not in a building, right,
- 3:28is creating the space from the door jamb
- 3:31and the actual this is considered like
- 3:33the threatening area, right? We don't
- 3:35want to when we start that pie to be
- 3:36right up into here. It feels people want
- 3:39to go to that door because they're
- 3:41shooting into it. And then I see my
- 3:42targets here. Bam, bam, bam. I've
- 3:44overexposed this to what I cannot see
- 3:47over here. So, we need to back off that
- 3:49door. Get what we can get on this side.
- 3:51And then we just start our movement from
- 3:53here utilizing as much space. Now, in a
- 3:55flat range, we got infinity. So, treat
- 3:59it realistically. What is your normal
- 4:00size of room that you can walk through?
- 4:02If there's furniture in the place, you
- 4:03can use boards like we're going to do
- 4:04later. Shorten it up. Use it as a
- 4:06hallway. Do not start your clearance
- 4:08from here. This is not where we want to
- 4:10be. As far back as possible.
- 4:12Okay. So, [clears throat] question. Um,
- 4:15if I'm if I'm here and I'm at a modified
- 4:18low ready,
- 4:19right?
- 4:20Why do I want to be at a modified low
- 4:21ready instead of already on the gun on
- 4:24my sights?
- 4:25Yeah. It just gives us that peripheral,
- 4:26right? We're able to open up our vision
- 4:28and process what we're seeing in the
- 4:29room. So, a big thing that new shooters,
- 4:33people that are new to like home defense
- 4:34or CQC, CQB, they get sucked into, I'm
- 4:37going to shoot my gun, I got to be on my
- 4:38sights. The processing that they're able
- 4:41to actually bring into their brain and
- 4:42tell them what's in the room just
- 4:44degrades rapidly. So, if I got that
- 4:46modified low ready here, that's why we
- 4:47work lows and highs on the range on the
- 4:49flat range. I'm here. I can look and see
- 4:52threat. Maybe it's not a threat. Maybe
- 4:54there's something that's kind of wonky
- 4:55in the back of the room. I'm trying to
- 4:57see around something. All I got to do is
- 4:59a quick snap. So that's we work a low
- 5:02ready drill and try to get that under
- 5:03that subsecond. That's how fast we
- 5:05should be able to do it even as we
- 5:06process and move through. So okay. So
- 5:09question for you on low ready because
- 5:11this seems to be something that I'm
- 5:12seeing all over the internet. Nobody has
- 5:14a standard for low ready.
- 5:16So if if this is low ready for me over
- 5:20the top of my sight, I'm thinking I'm at
- 5:23his belt line. is where where are you
- 5:27as far as from my low ready
- 5:29from your low ready. What are you seeing
- 5:30when you
- 5:31Yeah, I'm I'm just looking just over the
- 5:34top here. So, anything that's on that
- 5:36low end, I can still see out of the
- 5:38peripherals right in my left eye. That's
- 5:39also why we don't like if we're going to
- 5:41start doing getting into clearance of
- 5:43any kind. And we should be practicing
- 5:45this just on the flat ranges, two eyes
- 5:46open, right? See a lot of people get in
- 5:49here and especially when they shoot
- 5:50pistols and they do like a home defense
- 5:51course, they close that eye and it's
- 5:54like all stop. Hey, you're missing all
- 5:57this stuff over here. We can't even
- 5:58you're you're not even able to see it to
- 6:00process. So, what I want to do is keep
- 6:02my peripheral as open as possible. The
- 6:04only piece that I really can't see is
- 6:05this part of my gun, right? And I can
- 6:07pretty much see around it as I process
- 6:09the room. My eyes are kind of moving
- 6:10around it, [snorts] so I'm able to see
- 6:12everything I need to. If I have to come
- 6:14a little lower,
- 6:16we can do that, too. It's not a big
- 6:17deal. What are we talking here? 5 6 in
- 6:20to come up to it, right? So, it's not a
- 6:22huge difference. If we're on the range
- 6:24and we want to say start working our low
- 6:26ready drills if we're not doing it for
- 6:29videos, you know, showing how fast we
- 6:31are, get get the gun low. You know what
- 6:33I'm saying? I I would start here. See
- 6:35what our time is there on our part time.
- 6:37Then, okay, this is way too low. I can
- 6:39see everything. Maybe I come up to here.
- 6:41Just kind of bring that up into my
- 6:42peripheral until I start to lose
- 6:44visibility of what I'm trying to shoot
- 6:45at. and then I'll start from there and
- 6:47work my way up and kind of start
- 6:49practicing that processing in the room.
- 6:51Okay, here we go. Let's shoot one. All
- 6:53right, so I come up to the door. I'm
- 6:55here. I'm low ready. And uh so I want to
- 6:58how how tight on the door before I start
- 7:00my pie.
- 7:02Right. So let's simulate that you have
- 7:05uh door handle on this side. Right.
- 7:06Okay.
- 7:07So we're going to pop that door. Now
- 7:09there's a couple different schools of
- 7:10thought on how we want to do that, too.
- 7:12Right. So, if I'm going to take this
- 7:13door, giving me a little bit more of an
- 7:16advantage, right? I'm going to get this
- 7:19gun tucked up as far underneath of my
- 7:20arm as I can. I'm not going to lean out
- 7:23and reach in front and I'm just going to
- 7:26hit that door and I'm going to shove it
- 7:28open and then separate myself from the
- 7:30door there. So, I'm going to go back as
- 7:31far as I can. So, let's treat this as if
- 7:34it's a long haul right here. I'm gonna
- 7:36go back literally as far as I can go so
- 7:38that I'm getting as far into that corner
- 7:40as I possibly can because that is the
- 7:42immediate threat of mine. And then I'm
- 7:44gonna start working my pie.
- 7:46Boom. What we don't want to do we see a
- 7:48lot of if as we're doing this movement
- 7:51is like this stuff. We start like
- 7:53getting feet cross up. We're not doing
- 7:54it like a OSI drill in football, right?
- 7:57Normal walking is the easiest way to do
- 7:59this. Just going to come out and walk.
- 8:02Boom. Boom. Boom. Going to keep going
- 8:04down. Boom. Boom. Boom. Okay. All right.
- 8:07Here we go.
- 8:24We take up all the rest of the real
- 8:25estate we can get. Here we go.
- 8:28Excellent. What did that feel like when
- 8:30you were doing that? Um, so a couple of
- 8:32things that I had questions on when I
- 8:34was done backwards was I feel like I
- 8:36stopped when I might have kept should
- 8:38have kept going after I shot.
- 8:39Yeah. So, as we like for first time
- 8:43people that are doing this, right?
- 8:44That's what I would do. I'm going to get
- 8:47my clearance. I'm going to start my
- 8:48movement. When I see my target,
- 8:51I'm going to stop and I'm going to just
- 8:52make sure that I'm getting my good hits
- 8:54because my body position is now
- 8:56different than what it normally is.
- 8:57Right? If we start to incorporate the
- 8:59full movement across before we're
- 9:01comfortable with this kind of this
- 9:03offshooting here and I'm going to keep
- 9:05walking, we're going to start seeing
- 9:07rounds trail and lead. They're going to
- 9:09go back and forth on the target because
- 9:10we're not comfortable with that swing.
- 9:11Different body position and a lateral
- 9:13movement. So,
- 9:16I don't mind the stopping right at
- 9:18first. What it should look like is
- 9:26all the way over. All right.
- 9:29[clears throat] See if we can uh see if
- 9:31we can simulate.
- 9:33Trying to be like feel the seal.
- 9:35Don't be like me.
- 9:36All right. Here we go. Doors open.
- 9:51All right. So, you got all these
- 9:52different like IPSC IDPA targets, right?
- 9:54We chose these ones because the idea
- 9:57behind the these drills is to be able to
- 9:59shoot fast and accurately with the
- 10:02movement piece in it. So, we've kind of
- 10:03limited what our effective hit area is.
- 10:06So, we basically run like an A zone down
- 10:08and then we got like your lower pelvis,
- 10:09stomach, but we want these in the A's.
- 10:11And then if we switch over and we start
- 10:12going to the head shots, we'd like to
- 10:15keep them in here. We start to really
- 10:16tighten up groups when we do that. But
- 10:18these targets allow your eyes to kind of
- 10:20focus on a certain piece that we're
- 10:22trying to hit. Um [snorts]
- 10:24simple spray paint or you can pick these
- 10:25up online and they're really good for
- 10:27these kind of drills cuz it forces your
- 10:29hand to focus on the area that we're
- 10:31actually trying to hit. So So you can
- 10:33grab some duct tape, run it down the A
- 10:35zone, spray paint black on both sides.
- 10:37You can do these on angles, whatever you
- 10:39want to, depending on the scenario that
- 10:41we're setting up. So, let's run it
- 10:42again.
- 10:42All right, here we go. Door.
- 10:58How'd that feel?
- 10:59I felt a little bit smoother.
- 11:01I think I'm I think I'm I don't have my
- 11:04foot feet worked down.
- 11:05Yeah. to where I feel like if I tripped
- 11:07over something, I'd be screwed right
- 11:08now.
- 11:08Yeah. Yeah. And uh I don't know if you
- 11:12notice it when you do it and I do it
- 11:14myself sometimes still. Once I get that
- 11:16first target and I start shooting
- 11:17through it and I've now I've looked
- 11:19through my optic or my red dot, we tend
- 11:22to hone in on staying on our sights
- 11:24rather than coming back down because
- 11:26we've just shot a target. Boom, boom,
- 11:29boom. And now my eyes just are locked on
- 11:31that red dot. and we start to see we'll
- 11:33lose a lot of that peripheral that we're
- 11:35trying to maintain the whole time. So,
- 11:38it's not like a quick dump of uh I shot
- 11:42a target, I'm going to go back down to
- 11:44this like super low ready. It's going to
- 11:46be coming across
- 11:48and then I'm just down to here again.
- 11:53Makes it a little bit easier. I do like
- 11:55to kind of hone in on the red dots as I
- 11:58get to that kind of far thing because
- 12:00this is where and we'll talk about this
- 12:01drill later is shooting through that
- 12:03crevice. I don't want to be super low
- 12:06and then I snap or I'm caned and now I'm
- 12:07hitting a door jam. So when I get to
- 12:09that kind of end part, I'm going to
- 12:10bring it up just so I kind of see a
- 12:12little bit more of it and I'm just
- 12:14focused on this little corner area right
- 12:16here. But we'll talk about that drill
- 12:17later. Go ahead.
- 12:31I did it again. That you that felt way
- 12:34it looked way smoother and your footwork
- 12:36was way it was just natural walking,
- 12:38right? We get kind of sucked into the
- 12:40weeds on like here like footwork a lot.
- 12:44If you're super new to this, we just
- 12:46walk. We just walk. and get comfortable
- 12:47walking cuz as we're moving through
- 12:50here, we're essentially having to pivot
- 12:52around, right? Like our hips are
- 12:53transitioning with the movement of the
- 12:55actual threat that we face. So there are
- 12:58times where I'm going to be here and
- 13:00then I have to turn my hips to get
- 13:02around. Otherwise, we're you're doing
- 13:04this number. That's not we can't shoot
- 13:06like that. It looks stupid. So when the
- 13:08hips move, we just walk backwards in
- 13:10that kind of semicircle. That looked
- 13:12really good. Footwork was really good
- 13:14there. No stoppages. came down, dropped
- 13:16that modified low. It was awesome. So
- 13:19guys, one of the reasons why you want to
- 13:21have So there's a difference in
- 13:23practice. If you're out here by
- 13:25yourself, you're practicing instruction
- 13:28or a class through a a a an instructor
- 13:33that is better than you and has the
- 13:35skills to be able to do it and watch you
- 13:37and correct you. That's that's
- 13:39instruction. That's that's real
- 13:41training. So, make sure you get the
- 13:43difference in I'm practicing and I'm
- 13:45training. If you're on the range by
- 13:46yourself, you're not training. You're
- 13:48practicing. Try to shoot while you move.
- 13:51That most people don't do. They go out
- 13:52and they get 100 rounds, come up, high,
- 13:54ready, low, ready, boom, boom, boom.
- 13:56Shoot a couple build drills, do a
- 13:57transition, like, I'm good to go. Now,
- 13:59let's laterally move back and forth. We
- 14:02can [music] even take, if you had to, if
- 14:04we didn't have this this setup right,
- 14:05and we wanted to kind of work that same
- 14:07kind of movement, we don't even need to
- 14:09build a door jam here. You don't have to
- 14:11have this. We can simulate any of this
- 14:13stuff. We can put a target in the middle
- 14:14and start that walk and just snapshot
- 14:17boom boom boom down. And we can keep
- 14:19doing that over and over again until we
- 14:22feel comfortable that as we're moving,
- 14:24we're still hitting what we're aiming at
- 14:26and having our body do these different
- 14:28things that we're not used to because we
- 14:29do this all the time. Hey, that feels
- 14:31way more comfortable now if I'm here and
- 14:33I'm more bladed off cuz this is like a
- 14:35cardinal sin, right? To shoot like this.
- 14:36This is like old marksmanship NRA stuff.
- 14:39Nobody does that anymore. We get put in
- 14:41those positions with our foot placement
- 14:43as we move. It just happens. So, this is
- 14:46a little this is even overkill for like
- 14:48somebody who's just getting into it, but
- 14:49I think it drives the point home for
- 14:51that low ready to process what we're
- 14:53looking for. So, this next drill is like
- 14:55your worst case scenario, but it's super
- 14:57easy to set up and you can do it either
- 14:59with this or you can just do a modified
- 15:01one where we do that low ready and we
- 15:03explode back as we kind of pop a door
- 15:05and start to engage. So, if I were to
- 15:08open a door here with proper P, right,
- 15:11we that's like the biggest thing with
- 15:13all this stuff is make sure that that is
- 15:14actually somebody that we are trying to
- 15:16shoot at or something. If I swing this
- 15:19door open here, boom, and somebody's
- 15:22right there. Theoretically, we can start
- 15:25shooting from here. I I can I'm looking
- 15:27down. It's more of that instinctual kind
- 15:30of point shooting. I can do that from
- 15:31here. Realistically, we want to create
- 15:33space. So that's a move back as we
- 15:36engage from there. Okay. So you can do
- 15:38that even on a flat range just by
- 15:40simulating a a chicken wing and then on
- 15:42a shot timer. Beep. Boom boom boom boom
- 15:44boom. And then we're going to bring the
- 15:45gun up and shoot from there. So if
- 15:48you're going to set up the door jambs,
- 15:49make sure there's not a bunch of stuff
- 15:52in the way that you can hit and like hit
- 15:53yourself in the face with it cuz you can
- 15:55frag yourself pretty good out here. So
- 15:56all right. You want me to run it, Trey?
- 15:58Yeah. Okay.
- 16:00So this is just a fast simulation. And I
- 16:02got the gun is tucked up under my arm.
- 16:04It gives me that kind of stability. If
- 16:08I'm going to throw a door here, I can
- 16:10from here
- 16:12shoot like super easily. This takes a
- 16:15lot of practice. I have to have muzzle
- 16:16discipline, whatever. I probably
- 16:18wouldn't want to do that unless I've
- 16:22done this several times, right? So,
- 16:24chicken wing door gets popped
- 16:29and I'm going to engage. I'm going to
- 16:30make sure everything's good. Then we
- 16:32continue that movement around the room.
- 16:35Drop that modified low. Clear. Clear.
- 16:38Clear.
- 16:40And all the way over. See what I need to
- 16:42see. Okay.
- 16:44So, here I am. I've got my gun tucked
- 16:46in. What' you call it? Chicken wing.
- 16:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:48And I'm going to pop the door.
- 16:50Am I on safety right now? Yes.
- 16:52Yes. Safety finger off the trigger.
- 16:54Yes.
- 16:54Okay. And then as soon as I know that
- 16:56that's a threat, safety's off as I'm
- 16:58coming up. Correct. Okay. Then do I put
- 17:02the gun back on safety as I start my
- 17:04pie?
- 17:04As a good practice. Yeah.
- 17:06Okay.
- 17:06We should start there, right? Because
- 17:08we're in that initial phase of we're
- 17:10trying to get good P, right? We don't
- 17:13want to have to be taking a shot and
- 17:15going, "Oh, what did I just do?" kind of
- 17:17thing. So, give yourself that extra
- 17:19split second. Gun goes on safe. Tone it
- 17:21down a second. That modified low, and
- 17:23then we continue the movement there.
- 17:24What is P?
- 17:26Positive identification. So, we want to
- 17:28make sure that it's not your kids, your
- 17:31wife, dog, cat, whatever it is in the
- 17:33house or whatever the situation may be.
- 17:35We don't just run in there and start
- 17:37slinging bullets, right? We can take
- 17:39that extra 3/10 of a second and kind of
- 17:41look, okay, I know what that is. Oh,
- 17:43that's not what I want to shoot at. We
- 17:44can come down off of that. That's why we
- 17:46don't go finger on trigger on fire, get
- 17:49startled, and that's the initial thing
- 17:50is I now I've sent something that I
- 17:52didn't want to shoot.
- 17:53Okay. So, another question here is let's
- 17:56say I pop this door and I see that
- 17:58that's a person, but I was looking at
- 18:00the door and I just barely caught it and
- 18:03I don't know if they have a gun. Then
- 18:05what?
- 18:06Yeah. Then we're going to have to kind
- 18:07of modify what we're doing here. Are we
- 18:09going white light? If it's dark in the
- 18:10house, like if it's in your house and
- 18:12say you're home alone, you're like,
- 18:13"Nobody's supposed to be in here." Now
- 18:15we start, that's that processing that we
- 18:17talked about in the beginning here is
- 18:18like takes a lot of time to learn what
- 18:21our brains are going to do when we're
- 18:22processing threat. non-threat, you know,
- 18:24lethal force, non-lethal. Maybe that's a
- 18:27command call. If you if somebody's not
- 18:29supposed to be in there, hey, what are
- 18:30you doing here? Kind of thing. We're not
- 18:32just immediately like human. Boom. And
- 18:35starting to send rounds, right? So,
- 18:36yeah, that becomes like a decision-m
- 18:39thing. Yeah. Okay. All right. Here we
- 18:41go. Let's run it. Let's run it. I got I
- 18:44feel fast. I'm just kidding. I feel
- 18:46slow. I feel when he shoots versus when
- 18:47I shoot, I feel so slow. All right. Here
- 18:49we go.
- 18:51I wonder if I can do the field shoot.
- 18:53Let me just try.
- 18:57I think I hit it all three times. All
- 18:59right, here we go. Here we go. All
- 19:00right. Ready? Pop the door. There's the
- 19:03guy.
- 19:04All right, now I'm back down. I'm
- 19:06pinging.
- 19:08Oh, I'm in my sight. Ah, son of a
- 19:11biscuit. Son of a biscuit.
- 19:14How'd that feel?
- 19:15Um,
- 19:17I I think it felt really good. I I got
- 19:19on this guy really fast. I was still
- 19:21like these are me right here [snorts]
- 19:25and I saw myself hit that low.
- 19:27Yep.
- 19:27But it was like I picked it up and just
- 19:29started hammering down because I just
- 19:31thought as soon as I see it shoot and
- 19:33we're talking proximity. So that's that
- 19:35as we're basically coming back as we
- 19:38come up. You started to shoot because
- 19:40it's proximity. We're close up here.
- 19:42Hey, we had good positive ID. I'm now
- 19:45I'm shooting as it's coming up. That's
- 19:47kind of where we want that progression
- 19:49to get. If we're talking baseline
- 19:52back, get on your sights, engage, boom,
- 19:55boom, boom. What we're looking for is
- 19:57that it's outside of just a low ready
- 20:00snapshot. I am introducing a movement
- 20:02into it to create that separation while
- 20:04it's coming up and I'm acquiring sights
- 20:06and now I'm shooting. So, we're adding
- 20:07two little steps to the actual drill.
- 20:10Like I said, we don't need the door jam.
- 20:11We can do this out here flat. Just
- 20:14simulate that hop back and bring the gun
- 20:16up. Shoot. Do it again. Just keep doing
- 20:18it. And we can make those distances
- 20:20greater as we get better at it. I think
- 20:21that kind of helps students out, too.
- 20:23All right, listen guys. I want you to
- 20:25step in here to my office.
- 20:26Step into my office.
- 20:28Why? [music]
- 20:28Cuz you're fucking fired.
- 20:30Boom. All alphas, baby. All alphas. I'm
- 20:34just saying his
- 20:36Oh. Oh, no. My buddy Phil
- 20:39right here
- 20:40is freaking awesome. Those are actually
- 20:43those are actually um those were Matt
- 20:45shots. That's where I was aiming.
- 20:47[laughter]
- 20:47All right, let's do drill number three.
- 20:49Okay, so drill number three. It's a
- 20:51simple movement drill, but I think it
- 20:53drives home the point of that shooting
- 20:55and moving with a little bit of a
- 20:56lateral step into our threshold, we'll
- 20:58call it. All right, so we built a a fake
- 21:01door here. These are obviously walls
- 21:03that run, we cannot see on the other
- 21:05side. This target over here is
- 21:06simulating some of that's tucked way
- 21:08back in that last little bit that we
- 21:10can't see. So, the drill is super easy
- 21:12to do. We do it how we normally would.
- 21:14we get all the way to what we can't see
- 21:16in the end. Now, we're going to do a a
- 21:18breakdown for this one. As we step
- 21:20through the door, the gun comes down and
- 21:22then back up.
- 21:24And then we're going to continue our
- 21:25clearance. Right. So, this is a simple
- 21:28heel toe walk, break the threshold, gun
- 21:30comes up, and we start to engage. This
- 21:32one can What we're looking for with this
- 21:35primarily is as the shooter, I want to
- 21:37make sure that my dot is not doing this,
- 21:39right? Trying to keep that dot as as
- 21:42calm as possible even with the movement
- 21:44and the shooting. And also it's that
- 21:47snap off of coming from the low ready
- 21:49here or sorry the high ready and then
- 21:51bringing it out real quick. That's what
- 21:53we're kind of looking to do. Okay. So um
- 21:56question it starts in modified low
- 21:59ready, right? Yep.
- 22:00Because I've I'm I'm I've essentially
- 22:02panned the room. So I guess I would have
- 22:04started here and panned the room.
- 22:06Correct.
- 22:06Okay. So I've started here. I've panned
- 22:09the room. I don't see anything. Now I'm
- 22:11back here where I can't see. And the
- 22:14reason why I am bringing the gun
- 22:16breaking the gun down is because I'm I'm
- 22:18trying not to hit this threshold,
- 22:20right? Yeah. Similar if there's a door
- 22:22jam here.
- 22:22So door jam, guys, that if if just so
- 22:25you can like understand it that if I
- 22:27came here, I would hit the door jam. So
- 22:29we're breaking the gun down underneath,
- 22:32stepping through. Is there anything any
- 22:35special footwork that I need to know?
- 22:37The internet is beating me to death on
- 22:39footwork, Bill.
- 22:40Yeah. Um, let's again, let's just keep
- 22:42this like baseline. If we're starting
- 22:45off like, hey, I've never done this
- 22:47before. What's the easiest room?
- 22:49How would I walk into this room
- 22:50normally? Like, I'm going to go into the
- 22:52laundry room.
- 22:55You know what I'm saying? It's a literal
- 22:57movement of just I have to go this way.
- 22:59I'm going to go that way, and then I'm
- 23:00going to keep walking. The only
- 23:01difference is is I have this gun here.
- 23:03And as I come through, this is a
- 23:06simultaneous like movement, right? As
- 23:08the leg breaks the threshold,
- 23:11it's here. And now I got the gun up. So
- 23:13all I'm doing is introducing this into a
- 23:16walking into a room just to keep it
- 23:18super simple.
- 23:19We're going to call them footwork fill.
- 23:21Footwork fill. Here we go, baby.
- 23:23I'll trip on the next one.
- 23:24All right. Here we go. Let's see if I
- 23:25can get her.
- 23:33What' you think?
- 23:34Um I felt like I got it caught
- 23:36underneath my arm. Yeah.
- 23:37Yeah. A little bit. Uh and this is we we
- 23:40talked about it. If we don't have to
- 23:43break down, then we won't do it. I like
- 23:46to do it because most of the time, uh
- 23:48people are doing this stuff with 14-in
- 23:50guns, you know, and they they got the
- 23:52longer barrels on them. We can't
- 23:53necessarily get that through. This door
- 23:55is clearly bigger. I'm a smaller guy. I
- 23:58can pretty much get through a door with
- 24:00this this amount of breakdown where I
- 24:02just kind of blade off a little bit and
- 24:03then come through. I don't necessarily
- 24:05have to do this. I think it's good
- 24:07practice though. It adds a little bit
- 24:09more of a dynamic movement of like, hey,
- 24:12I'm not anywhere near the sights now.
- 24:14I'm going to a high ready drill while
- 24:15moving forward. So, if we want to break
- 24:17it down to its simplest form before we
- 24:19even do this, we can start here, walk
- 24:21forward, and then just present and
- 24:23shoot. Where is it comfortable for you
- 24:25to then get the gun back out? Right
- 24:28there. Right. That's kind of what you
- 24:30would practice as your high ready drills
- 24:32on a flat range. If you just came out
- 24:33here and you're shooting, where do you
- 24:35normally keep that? If we're talking
- 24:37multiple people are like you have
- 24:38another guy on that side of the wall,
- 24:40maybe we got to come up a little bit
- 24:41more. Okay. Uh, as far as like trigger
- 24:44and safety manipulation for people that
- 24:47are getting into this right now, we're
- 24:50going to do it super basic. Right.
- 24:52Fingers out, safe is on until I have
- 24:55good target identification. The gun is
- 24:57now in my shoulder. I have good sights
- 24:59on, safety's off. Now, we're going to
- 25:01start to prep that trigger just because
- 25:03we need to build as we go.
- 25:05Sure. And we might We're doing this now
- 25:08for home defense. This is I mean basic
- 25:10CQB that if you if you learn with, you
- 25:13know, you get this down and you add
- 25:14another guy and you add four and maybe
- 25:16you're an airsofter and you add 20 or
- 25:18maybe whatever you need it for. I don't
- 25:20know. But I'm thinking right now that
- 25:23I'm this is potential saving my family.
- 25:26And so if I'm saving my family, I just
- 25:28woke up at night and I'm groggy and I'm
- 25:30like, "What's going on?" And I'm in my
- 25:32freaking underwear or maybe you're free
- 25:34balling. I don't know what you guys do.
- 25:36But like safety on finger off the
- 25:39trigger is the way to go until you know
- 25:41that you have to shoot this guy. That's
- 25:44coming from like we both agree on that.
- 25:46Yeah. I think that's a good practice
- 25:47just to start and finish with always.
- 25:50All right, here we go. Let's give her
- 25:51another run.
- 25:52All right, so let's focus on that
- 25:54modified high ready and where it feels
- 25:56really comfortable as it comes out of
- 25:58that under into that shoulder pocket. So
- 26:00that's the focus here.
- 26:01Okay, here we go.
- 26:10That looks smoother.
- 26:11Yeah, it felt pretty good.
- 26:12Felt smooth. Here's a big thing that
- 26:13when uh we go over this stuff, right? We
- 26:16don't want to overthink basic things
- 26:18that we do every day, right? We can get
- 26:20super into the weeds on all this stuff,
- 26:23we go out to a range and we do high
- 26:25ready, low ready all the time. All we're
- 26:26doing is now walking in it, right? So,
- 26:28when you stop thinking about all that
- 26:30stuff and the gun just comes out and
- 26:31it's where it's supposed to be, now
- 26:33we're like, "Oh, I felt it. It was
- 26:35right. Let's do it again. Let's do it
- 26:36again." We keep going. Then we can
- 26:38progress from there and build. Uh, how
- 26:40did the like your elevation on where you
- 26:42was that comfortable where you were
- 26:44here?
- 26:44Yeah, I think that was fine. Yeah. And
- 26:46it it felt like when you said do it like
- 26:47you would normally do it and I was just
- 26:49like, "Oh, okay. This is this was where
- 26:51I would normally do it."
- 26:52And so once I did that, I also didn't
- 26:54get caught in my jacket.
- 26:55Yeah.
- 26:56Um, I guess the first time what I was
- 26:58thinking when I got caught in my jacket
- 27:00was I felt like in my brain maybe now
- 27:03that I think about it is like this will
- 27:04be faster, but the truth was it wasn't.
- 27:06I got caught in my jacket and the way
- 27:08that I always did it was faster.
- 27:10Yeah.
- 27:10Yeah.
- 27:10We always kind of revert [clears throat]
- 27:11back to that. You know, we hear it all
- 27:13the time is like you will revert back to
- 27:15what you do all the time. And uh we were
- 27:18talking holdovers too. Like we put the
- 27:20dot where we want it to go even if we
- 27:21know we have a holdover when like the
- 27:23stressors go. Same thing with this kind
- 27:25of I'm doing something different now.
- 27:28I'm caught. What do I do? Instead of
- 27:30just [music] I do this all the time.
- 27:31There it is. Same with the low ready
- 27:33stuff too. Uh footwork. We'll we'll talk
- 27:35about footwork. That looks super. It was
- 27:37like smooth, right? There's no hiccups.
- 27:40There's not this overanalyzing stepping
- 27:42too far forward then going too far that
- 27:44way. Then I'm not far enough into the
- 27:46room when I initially want to be. So
- 27:48that was just a walk, lift, and shoot.
- 27:51Looked really good. Did smooth.
- 27:52What I am seeing is so it kind of
- 27:54progressed to where guys were really
- 27:56compressing like this.
- 27:57Yep.
- 27:57And and then stuff was getting caught up
- 27:59on kit and now I'm seeing a lot of this.
- 28:01Right.
- 28:02And then they come into the room and
- 28:03drive.
- 28:03Yeah. Right. a lot of that over the
- 28:05shoulder stuff. Um, yeah, we went high
- 28:08port cuz it's easier to lean on [music]
- 28:09like door jambs when you're like
- 28:10relaxing. [laughter]
- 28:11I'm tired, man.
- 28:12Yeah. So, yeah, let's talk about a
- 28:14little bit of that that over the
- 28:15shoulders. It's gaining a little bit of
- 28:17popularity. There's a lot of different
- 28:19schools of thoughts on it, right? Uh, I
- 28:22had always done this under the arm going
- 28:24through a doorway. Uh, and I felt
- 28:26comfortable doing that. As I've kind of
- 28:28played around with this, it's a little
- 28:30bit easier to clear things that way.
- 28:33like as far as things that I'm going
- 28:35through and I feel like I'm faster for
- 28:37the presentation. I think one overlooked
- 28:39aspect of doing this as we come through
- 28:43is an immediate thing that I have to
- 28:45deal with how accurate can we be taking
- 28:49shots from up there. Not that we want to
- 28:51do that, right? We always want to have
- 28:52that good base where the gun comes out
- 28:55and it's in the shoulder. Boom. I'm
- 28:56here. This is where we want to shoot
- 28:58from. In the event, say there's
- 29:00something real close to me. What is the
- 29:02actual effective distance that we can
- 29:03engage from here accurately? So that's
- 29:06if if you guys are kind of super into
- 29:09that and this feels really comfortable
- 29:10coming over the shoulder, I would
- 29:13incorporate maybe a baseline training
- 29:15and you don't need to do any walking
- 29:17movement or anything. Right? So we can
- 29:19come out to here and literally stand
- 29:22here and come over our shoulder and just
- 29:25see where am I hitting. Right? It gives
- 29:28me at least a baseline like, hey, if I'm
- 29:30coming through and I'm right here, I can
- 29:32point shoot to maybe 10 to 15 yards. And
- 29:36that's stretching it out there. And now
- 29:38we're talking at 15 just hitting the
- 29:40body. I'd be pretty happy with that.
- 29:43Takes a lot of practice to do that.
- 29:45Shoot from here. The goal isn't to keep
- 29:47shooting from here, right? The goal is
- 29:49to eventually get the gun into the
- 29:51shoulder pocket as we're moving forward.
- 29:53But if we had to, how accurate are we?
- 29:56So, a simple drill to do is what we just
- 29:58did, right? Come out to the line. Gun
- 30:01goes over the shoulder. We're on safe
- 30:03fingers out. Shoot a two shot group.
- 30:06Just see where we hit. Okay, I'm at 8
- 30:08yards there. I had one burner on the C
- 30:11and one in the A. So, I I feel pretty
- 30:13comfortable with that. Now, the next
- 30:15drill, maybe we back out just a little
- 30:17bit. Don't even incorporate the door.
- 30:19Okay. And we're going to come in.
- 30:24We're going to close the gap there. Now,
- 30:26where do we hit? So, if we look
- 30:29first shot, it's acceptable. It's not
- 30:31where I would want it if I'm going here.
- 30:34And then once the gun goes into the
- 30:35pocket, we close the distance, then our
- 30:37group starts to tighten up, obviously.
- 30:39Okay. Uh, and then as we progress, we
- 30:41get into doors. Coming through an actual
- 30:44door and taking a lateral step, it gets
- 30:46really difficult to do it that way. So,
- 30:48we'll run it just starting here. So, the
- 30:51drill progression should be 5 to 7 yards
- 30:54that over the shoulder. see where I'm
- 30:55hitting. Then the next one is
- 30:58presenting into the shoulder as we're
- 31:00moving. So coming off that high thing,
- 31:02take maybe one to two shots as we're
- 31:04moving. Get it in the pocket. Shoot from
- 31:06there. Then we'll build the door in. Now
- 31:08that I'm going to bring this up to you,
- 31:09go back and look at all of the
- 31:11instruction that Phil's been doing. We
- 31:13typically whenever we're on a flat
- 31:15range, all of our stuff is get a really
- 31:18good base, come up, fire. Right? If you
- 31:22notice, every single time he's making
- 31:24this first shot or almost every time,
- 31:27it's like this.
- 31:30It's crazy, huh? I think that's why
- 31:31everybody says that the flat range, like
- 31:33when you think you have it figured out
- 31:34on the flat range, do you actually have
- 31:36it figured out? But like his first shot
- 31:38every single time has been here, second
- 31:40shot, and you see what I'm saying? Just
- 31:42because you have it down here doesn't
- 31:45mean you really have it down. And that's
- 31:47kind of one of the things we're trying
- 31:48to show you throughout this video. So,
- 31:50how did that feel? Like, it's kind of
- 31:52wonky. You got the caned a little bit.
- 31:54I don't know how to explain. Like, I'm
- 31:56trying to focus on the target and like
- 32:00have my It just feels so not unstable,
- 32:03just weird. Yeah.
- 32:04Yeah. Wonky is a good word.
- 32:06Yeah. A little bit wonky.
- 32:07Yeah. Now,
- 32:10I do feel though like I can at least at
- 32:12this distance I could hit it, right?
- 32:13Yeah.
- 32:14Yeah. So, at like five to seven, it's
- 32:16comfortable, but you shoot a lot too,
- 32:18right? So, if somebody that's like kind
- 32:19of new to it and they're like, I want to
- 32:21get into this and try it, maybe we go to
- 32:24something a little more basic first. Uh,
- 32:26so the drill progression, if you want to
- 32:28go out and just do it on a flat range,
- 32:30is get that feel for where it is, which
- 32:32we just did. And then the next thing
- 32:33that we really want to work on is the
- 32:36speed of to here. And then I'm actually
- 32:39seeing my sights so I know what I'm
- 32:41actually shooting at. So, we got we feel
- 32:43good. Hey, we can make those hits. So,
- 32:44now the next drill.
- 32:45So, it would just look like this.
- 32:47Yep.
- 32:48Exactly.
- 32:51Start with a one shot string, then maybe
- 32:53go up to doubles, start shooting two
- 32:54shots. Here we go.
- 32:57Yep.
- 32:58Yep.
- 32:59It's a good drill.
- 33:00Then the last kind of step of this is
- 33:02that coming off getting the shoulder
- 33:06pocket as we're moving, right?
- 33:07Okay. So, it should be then I should be
- 33:10here.
- 33:10Yep.
- 33:11And uh
- 33:16Yeah. or shoot
- 33:19first up here. Shoot first here in this
- 33:21drill.
- 33:22If we're talking strictly like where do
- 33:24we want the gun to be? It's to get to
- 33:26here as fast as possible. Now, as we
- 33:28build, we can go the whole way out. We
- 33:31can start that shot and see what we're
- 33:32doing. If we want to get the most out of
- 33:35the drill, it's the moving to get it
- 33:37into our shoulders. What we're looking
- 33:38for.
- 33:39Okay. So, then it's just here, here,
- 33:42right? I kind of like to introduce that.
- 33:44Hey, we're going to try this cuz a lot
- 33:47of people are doing this now. I want
- 33:50them to see how difficult that is. And
- 33:53me and you can both agree that it is not
- 33:55easy and we both shoot quite a bit.
- 33:57There's there's a lot of variation in
- 33:58where we can hit.
- 33:59Yeah. No, I totally agree. These CGS
- 34:01suppressors are incredible. They have
- 34:04one of the least blowbacks on the
- 34:05market, but when your face is over the
- 34:08top of it, like it doesn't matter what
- 34:10you have. And I can only imagine a
- 34:12suppressor like that is horrible at
- 34:14blowback,
- 34:14right? Be eating gas like crazy. So the
- 34:18progression is can I do it? And if we
- 34:21can't do it, maybe we start thinking
- 34:22about different ways of incorporating
- 34:25like coming into a room, right? If we're
- 34:28good at it and we're like, hey, I got
- 34:29good hits, so I'm capable enough to do
- 34:32it. Then we can continue to build on it.
- 34:35But the next the theoretical progression
- 34:37is to get it to here faster. So that's
- 34:40where we can work that. You could
- 34:41literally stand here on the flat range
- 34:43and just
- 34:44boom over and over again. Put yourself
- 34:47on a clock. That always seems to add
- 34:49like a massive amount of stress for some
- 34:51reason and guys will start screwing
- 34:52stuff up. Uh [snorts] and then we start
- 34:54to incorporate the walking which we just
- 34:56did. So super easy and it doesn't take a
- 34:58lot of rounds. I mean you can do it in a
- 34:59mag. Do shoot a mag a day of it, you
- 35:01know, if that's what you want to do. So,
- 35:03one of the things I would say, guys, is
- 35:05um I don't I don't believe, and I think
- 35:09Phil will agree with me on this, I don't
- 35:11believe that there's any one right way.
- 35:13I kind of think you should be familiar
- 35:15with all of them because you never know
- 35:17when that's what you're going to have to
- 35:19do. And so, the point of purposeful
- 35:22practicing or training is so that you're
- 35:26so comfortable with this gun that it's
- 35:29just like second nature.
- 35:30Yes.
- 35:30Yeah. And so I've been out here with
- 35:32Phil for the last couple hours. He can
- 35:34do every every way. He can do all three
- 35:36of them, whatever. Low ready, high
- 35:38ready, over the shoulder. It's fine. Um
- 35:40crap. I even think you need to be able
- 35:42to do it where maybe I wasn't paying
- 35:43attention or maybe I was working on
- 35:45something and I had to get my gun up and
- 35:47still shoot, right? Like you need to be
- 35:48so familiar with this gun that it's just
- 35:51second nature to you. And I think that a
- 35:54lot of a lot of things that I personally
- 35:56see with with people is like they only
- 35:59take the gun out once or twice a year or
- 36:01maybe they're kind of scared of it. It's
- 36:03like they're kind of like like I I don't
- 36:06know like they're just a and and I know
- 36:08in your mind you're saying I'm not
- 36:09scared of my gun. I get it. But you're
- 36:12just kind of just not comfortable with
- 36:14your gun. That's what I that's that's
- 36:15how I would describe it.
- 36:17Yeah. this uh a big part of this like if
- 36:20you want to come out and train CQB and
- 36:22this is what you want to get into. More
- 36:24importantly than anything that I find is
- 36:26it builds confidence in gun owners when
- 36:28they have another understanding of a
- 36:30different subject within firearms,
- 36:32right? You can be really good shooting
- 36:34along a lateral line with a bunch of
- 36:35people and you're hitting bullse eyes
- 36:37all the time. You can shoot fast.
- 36:38[music]
- 36:38Now we start to incorporate a little bit
- 36:40of movement. We got to kind of start
- 36:42over. Now we start to incorporate, you
- 36:44know, faux walls and targets and corners
- 36:46or what. What is that really doing is
- 36:48the confidence level. You see people get
- 36:50like now I know how to do that. I at
- 36:52least have a baseline understanding of
- 36:53it. So I think that makes people just
- 36:56better shooters, more comfortable around
- 36:57guns. I think that's that's where we
- 36:59want them to be, right? This is a drill
- 37:01for working that lateral progression
- 37:03into the room or the lateral movement I
- 37:05should say. So one way to do it is to
- 37:08get as far over as I can. I know that
- 37:11this is a a wall here and there's
- 37:12nothing that I haven't seen because I
- 37:14started and I looked all the way through
- 37:15the room. I get to here. The only thing
- 37:18I haven't seen is this last little bit
- 37:20here. So, I can present into here and
- 37:22shoot from here as I continue through.
- 37:26And
- 37:28the thought process of that is I'm going
- 37:30towards what I haven't seen yet. And
- 37:32that's going to be the most accurate
- 37:34engagement that I can do as a shooter.
- 37:36The other way that people like to do it,
- 37:38and this is where you got to kind of
- 37:41work this on like your range here, which
- 37:44is what we're doing, is moving laterally
- 37:47of the threat in the corner of the room
- 37:50there. So, the idea is that I don't want
- 37:53to be presenting myself to him as I move
- 37:56towards him, right? Makes it easier for
- 37:58him to shoot back at me. If I move this
- 38:01way, it makes it harder for him to pick
- 38:03up and track and shoot. The question
- 38:05that I always have is how good are we as
- 38:08shooters shooting as we move across
- 38:11something, right? So, me and Trey are
- 38:13both righties. This room will be a
- 38:15little bit easier. So, I get to my
- 38:18threshold here. And as I come in,
- 38:24okay, now right there, I can tell you I
- 38:26had one C in the top shoulder right
- 38:29here. Shot number four.
- 38:32This one here. because my sights as I'm
- 38:35walking, I'm not tracking back on them.
- 38:37And this is the easier way for us to
- 38:39actually shoot it because I'm going with
- 38:42the way that my body is built. We get
- 38:43into cross body shooting, which we'll
- 38:45talk about, it gets even harder because
- 38:46as for me, I get older. I can't turn all
- 38:50the way. So, Trey, you want to run it
- 38:51now? Kind of see what I want you to
- 38:54really focus on is call your misses if
- 38:57you have any. You probably won't. You'll
- 38:58probably hit them all, but if you have a
- 39:00miss, call it.
- 39:01Okay. So, um, going back to the same
- 39:03thing that we've always done here, we're
- 39:05going to enter this room
- 39:07low ready.
- 39:08Yes. It's the same
- 39:09modified low ready. Okay. And then we're
- 39:11not taking our safety off or finger on
- 39:12the trigger till we see the threat.
- 39:14Correct.
- 39:14Okay.
- 39:14Yep.
- 39:15All right. Here we go. And I've already
- 39:18cleared this one, so I'm coming in.
- 39:21Yeah. I had a miss shot to the right.
- 39:25Number
- 39:26number three shot was to the right. This
- 39:28could have been me right here because I
- 39:31was tracking my sights down as I was
- 39:33shooting that positive. That's me.
- 39:35Yep.
- 39:35And then I everything else while I was
- 39:38moving, my sights were tracking way low.
- 39:41Right. Right. So, this is like a good
- 39:43part of this to do that you can do just
- 39:45by walking back and forth on a range
- 39:48[music] and working that as I'm
- 39:50shooting, calling that shot. That's why
- 39:51I prefaced the the drill with that. I
- 39:54wanted you to kind of be focusing on
- 39:55that so you knew, hey, one, two, ah,
- 39:58three was way out there and I saw it
- 40:00happen. Why? What is the why behind why
- 40:02I ended up way out here? We were
- 40:04probably walking and the gun started to
- 40:06fade with us, right? I I could I
- 40:08literally remember seeing my first I had
- 40:12my dot here.
- 40:13Yep. And then I know second and third
- 40:15and I was like I don't know if it was
- 40:17like a movement in my feet now, but I do
- 40:19remember seeing my sight go off and I
- 40:22was like I pressed the trigger and I I
- 40:24was like I shouldn't have done that in
- 40:25my mind. I should have paused one more
- 40:27second but
- 40:27Yeah.
- 40:28Yeah.
- 40:28And it's good to know when we have those
- 40:30misses. So what we what we would like to
- 40:33do now is maybe slow down the walking
- 40:35for both of us. Slow it down a little
- 40:37bit and just focus on five hits in the
- 40:40A.
- 40:40All right, let's do it.
- 40:41Let's do that.
- 40:41Let's do it. Pressure on. Pressure's on.
- 40:43Let me stretch out my legs. All right,
- 40:45here we go. So, uh, as soon as we start
- 40:48to feel that kind of go, we're losing
- 40:50control. Throttle down just a little.
- 40:56I might have pulled that last one.
- 41:01Now she's clean. Look at that.
- 41:02Nice.
- 41:03Excellent. Okay, so now that we do that,
- 41:06say we do that two more times at that
- 41:08speed, we kind of build that, call it
- 41:1030% of what we're comfortable walking
- 41:11at, right? Felt like we were going
- 41:13pretty slow.
- 41:15We got hits. Now, would I like these
- 41:17groups to be tighter? Yeah, obviously.
- 41:19But hey, we got five a zone hits each.
- 41:21Next thing we're going to speed up just
- 41:23a little bit more. We build that in
- 41:25until they that spread goes. Now, you
- 41:27throttle back again until we get
- 41:28comfortable there. It's all progression
- 41:30as we're doing it. This is the easier
- 41:32way to do that lateral walk. And you
- 41:35don't need all this stuff, right? We can
- 41:36do this 10, 15 yards walking back and
- 41:39forth out here. You get the same thing
- 41:40out of the drill. I like to set these up
- 41:42because it mentally forces us to do
- 41:45those little nuances that you have to do
- 41:47going through a doorway. Okay.
- 41:49Yeah. One of the things that I noticed
- 41:51about setting this up, I realized this
- 41:52is like probably a 12x 12 room, which
- 41:54would be like a kids room. And
- 41:58mentally, without even knowing, I know
- 42:01that there's a wall there, right?
- 42:03So, it's like I need to shoot faster. I
- 42:05need to take my steps a little slower.
- 42:07And I need to stop. All that's
- 42:09processing as I'm shooting. Yes. Which I
- 42:11think makes it just a little cooler than
- 42:13just walking across the range. But
- 42:15totally understand if you can't do this.
- 42:17Um especially if you live in one of
- 42:19those commie states. All right guys,
- 42:21listen. This is a problem that I think I
- 42:23think this is a real problem. We've seen
- 42:25a video um where we saw a bunch of a
- 42:30bunch of tier one guys blistering
- 42:32through a house and they've even termed
- 42:35it. It's like on Reddit and shit. It's
- 42:37called Delta Fast. All right. I think
- 42:41you think that all CQB is that fast
- 42:44because you see these guys, but CQB
- 42:46isn't really that fast. It just looks
- 42:49fast because they're doing all of the
- 42:51fundamentals correct. Right, Phil? Yeah,
- 42:54that's a good point. We can go very slow
- 42:58through and it's still if things are
- 43:00flowing correctly, it does look fast and
- 43:02it will um takes a lot of repetition to
- 43:05get there. hours, days, weeks. Um,
- 43:09that's why I like doing this stuff
- 43:10because you can spend hours doing this
- 43:12and still find flaws in all of your
- 43:14shooting as we've seen today out here
- 43:16just doing it together. Right. One of my
- 43:18really good friends, his name is James
- 43:20Joerger, was James Jagger, I guess,
- 43:22still is James Joerger. Uh, one of my
- 43:24mentors, he told me, "How long do you
- 43:26have to do CQB?"
- 43:29The rest of your life. Don't rush to
- 43:32your death. All right, roll it, baby.
- 43:34All righty. So, we got normal for us
- 43:37being righties is coming through the
- 43:39doorway that way and the gun is where
- 43:41it's supposed to be. Now, if we talk
- 43:43about crossbody where I have to turn my
- 43:46body as I'm moving this way because I am
- 43:49a righty, we can get into switch
- 43:51shoulders, all this stuff that we got to
- 43:54start practicing more of that because
- 43:55people think that I can switch a
- 43:57shoulder, I can shoot this way. I I know
- 44:00I'm slower and my target acquisition is
- 44:03rough going to my non-dominant eye. So,
- 44:06I want to practice this. This is what
- 44:08I'm going to do uh for my own repetition
- 44:12training. Right? So, I get as far as I
- 44:14can see and then I'm going to make my
- 44:17entrance.
- 44:22Okay. Now,
- 44:25an easy way for me to kind of get my
- 44:27base back. I I have terrible flexibility
- 44:29now, right? Like as we get older, we get
- 44:32more tight. I can't turn all the way
- 44:34around to here. So,
- 44:37my feet are going to kind of do some of
- 44:39that work as I'm moving. And I end up
- 44:41walking almost backwards as I'm shooting
- 44:43cuz this is what I'm focused on here.
- 44:45Like all this other stuff going on here,
- 44:47I've already cleared all this up. This
- 44:49is the last thing that I'm worried
- 44:50about. Okay? So, I'm not worried about
- 44:53here. If I got to turn my back to an
- 44:55empty wall, it doesn't really matter,
- 44:57honestly. I'm focused on getting good
- 44:59hits on the target there. Uh,
- 45:03and we are clean now. I went slower. I
- 45:07went a little bit slower because I know
- 45:10if I ramp through there, I'm going to
- 45:12fade shots and they're going to go off.
- 45:14I know that about myself. So, maybe next
- 45:16time I go a little bit faster, call it
- 45:1710%. So, let's see how that feels.
- 45:21getting that kind of that little bit of
- 45:22a pivot as we move through.
- 45:23Okay, so I've come through. I'm gonna
- 45:26come through the threshold.
- 45:28Am I breaking down?
- 45:29Yeah.
- 45:30Yeah. Okay, so here we go. Break down.
- 45:32See my guy. Oh, I pulled that one. I
- 45:36pulled that very first shot far left.
- 45:39I can see it on the target.
- 45:40Yep.
- 45:40And that's usually where we see that is
- 45:42that initial bring up as we're moving.
- 45:46This is going one way or another if that
- 45:48makes any sense at all. Right. cuz I got
- 45:50a good base here.
- 45:53And as I present out, I'm taking a step
- 45:55here as I'm coming up and things will
- 45:57either they'll go with me or they'll go
- 46:00away from me is what I tend to see more
- 46:01often than not. And then we got to kind
- 46:03of dial back in, which you did. So first
- 46:05round, boom, you're way off. Next four,
- 46:07right in the middle. You know what's
- 46:09going on in my brain is um so this has
- 46:12like an EOTech circle dot reticle in it
- 46:14and I just like watched it float and I
- 46:17don't know if it was like I was pressing
- 46:19the trigger and it was still happening
- 46:21cuz in I in my mind I think I would make
- 46:24myself put it back but it was like it
- 46:26floated and I shot it was weird. Yeah,
- 46:28because and I I don't know the what do
- 46:30we call it the neuroscience or whatever
- 46:32behind it, but to me it's as I'm moving
- 46:34one way, the hands and everything else
- 46:37want to go with it. That's why when I
- 46:39turn all the way over like that, it gets
- 46:41super difficult cuz my natural body
- 46:43wants to move back to the way that I'm
- 46:45moving because it's comfortable for my
- 46:46torso to be there. That if that makes
- 46:48any sense. So, I think for me to do
- 46:50this, it's the presentation. And then
- 46:53one step over and if I can roll my hips
- 46:55and comfortably do that, I now have a
- 46:57better shooting base. And all I got to
- 46:59do now is walk backwards, which
- 47:02Let me see if I can try that. Dudes,
- 47:04this is the hardest one we've done so
- 47:05far. So, I'm here.
- 47:15That was better. I didn't have the pivot
- 47:17though. I think I I think I like came
- 47:20across and just started walking
- 47:22backwards. But I mean, I guess if I'm
- 47:23just walking to get in the room, I'm I
- 47:26walk to get in the room.
- 47:27Yeah. And how natural does it feel, I
- 47:29guess, is the next question. Never
- 47:32I felt like in my mind I felt like to go
- 47:34slow and make sure that it was there
- 47:35that I needed to walk like that. I mean,
- 47:37I know that I could have, but yeah, I
- 47:39felt like I don't know what I did was I
- 47:42felt like when I came through it just
- 47:45was immediately I started walking back.
- 47:47That's what I did, right?
- 47:47It's almost you're it's almost like
- 47:49you're uh you're when you take that
- 47:52initial step in the room and then we go
- 47:53this way. You just did it, but because
- 47:55you're already here when you stepped in,
- 47:57instead of going that way, because
- 47:59you're going this way, you just took
- 48:01that next step back and it just opened
- 48:03you up. Uh now, let's let's have you do
- 48:06it where you don't do the pivot at all
- 48:08and see what happens.
- 48:10Just use the trunk. Just walk through
- 48:11and use your trunk like this.
- 48:13Okay. Now, we're going to have to get
- 48:14the shots off faster because we're not
- 48:17going to be able to turn all the way
- 48:18around and get five shots off in this
- 48:20corner. We cannot be here shooting like
- 48:22this. You know what I'm saying?
- 48:26I don't know if I could do this. All
- 48:28right, here we go.
- 48:32Ah,
- 48:33see, we go right back to it. That feels
- 48:35comfortable.
- 48:41Now, how awkward did that feel? I I mean
- 48:44I'm like old and broken and like I can't
- 48:46even move my body that much. I don't
- 48:47even know. I I watched my dot jump all
- 48:50Look how bad I was shot right there. And
- 48:52I watched my body jump like I could
- 48:54watch it jump
- 48:55and I couldn't control it.
- 48:57Right. And that's because you're it's
- 49:00just tension is pulling it. So what does
- 49:02the shot placement show us
- 49:04realistically? As we move that way and
- 49:06our torso is trying to go this way, this
- 49:09is when we start to see the drag come
- 49:10across. You know what I'm saying? So
- 49:12that's why when I said, "Hey, do it this
- 49:14way." The next round that you did it,
- 49:16you did that same step when you turn
- 49:17because we have to open up to shoot that
- 49:19direction. So it's just that's what you
- 49:21naturally did. If you take the thought
- 49:23process out of it and you're not
- 49:24thinking where are my feet going, what
- 49:26is my shoulder doing here? And you just
- 49:27walk to shoot because you have to get
- 49:29five rounds before you hit that 8ft wall
- 49:31over there. You took a slight pivot step
- 49:33and just turned your open your hips up
- 49:34to it. It's like running a football
- 49:36drill where we turn to go that way as a
- 49:38cornerback. You know what I mean? Same
- 49:40principle. We're just doing it with a
- 49:41rifle now. So, it's super cool for me to
- 49:43see like run it the way that
- 49:47you theoretically are supposed to just
- 49:49walking towards that way and doing it
- 49:51and we see that drag [music] and that's
- 49:53not good, right?
- 49:55Yeah.
- 49:55Now, you were shooting faster, too,
- 49:57because you had to. You're hitting that
- 49:59wall faster cuz you can't get all the
- 50:01way over there. So, it's a super cool
- 50:03drill. I think it's a good one to do
- 50:05because we never practice that. Now, if
- 50:08we wanted to progress more, we would do
- 50:10the switch shoulders, but I would start
- 50:12real slow just standing there and doing
- 50:14the switching shoulders and then coming
- 50:16up and seeing what our eyes are doing
- 50:18looking into the sights. Okay, so that's
- 50:19a different drill for a different thing.
- 50:21This just shows it's a lot harder to
- 50:23move cross body cross body lateral than
- 50:26it is to come in on our strong side and
- 50:28just walk across the room. So, but good
- 50:31shooting otherwise. That was
- 50:33first of that. I'd see what I can see,
- 50:36then I break down.
- 50:39That's like the speed I would move. But
- 50:41I'm all over the fucking place. I'm not
- 50:43hitting accurately. I get seven shots,
- 50:46five in and then two I got in a D and
- 50:49one in a C and I know where they are
- 50:51because I'm able to kind of look. Okay,
- 50:54I'm still doing that pivot even though
- 50:56I'm going at a faster rate. If I were to
- 51:00do
- 51:02I didn't think I could do it, honestly.
- 51:03If I were to come through that wall,
- 51:05that threshold,
- 51:08I'm all over the place. So, I start to
- 51:10see the trail.
- 51:12I'm coming through. Can't get my torso
- 51:14to go all the way over that way. So, I
- 51:15start walking rounds. Boom, boom, boom.
- 51:18I see this hit and I go, what do I got
- 51:21to do? I'm way off. I got to come back
- 51:23over correction because I'm way out of
- 51:26body alignment there. So, that one
- 51:28little kind of pivot step, turning
- 51:29around just a little bit, getting a good
- 51:31base. We can do five in all day. Then we
- 51:35ramp speed as we go, get more
- 51:37comfortable. So, it's a cool drill to
- 51:38do. I would say that's probably the
- 51:40harder of the ones that we've done
- 51:42today.
- 51:42That's the hardest drill we've done so
- 51:43far. Yeah, that's the hardest drill. The
- 51:45one I'm least comfortable with. The
- 51:47problem for me as a shooter is I tend to
- 51:51shy away from the ones I'm least
- 51:52comfortable with and I need to attack
- 51:54the ones I'm least comfortable with.
- 51:55Yeah, that's a it's a trend with
- 51:57everybody. And I do the same thing like
- 51:59uh strong hand, weak hand kind of thing.
- 52:02Like you don't have a weak hand. I have
- 52:03a weak hand. It's my left hand.
- 52:04Yeah.
- 52:05My my left hand is weak. I'm not a good
- 52:07left-handed shooter. I know that uh if
- 52:10you start doing this stuff, it makes it
- 52:12easier to build that into this style of
- 52:14drill training because we almost see
- 52:17that we could almost be forced to go to
- 52:20a switch shoulder to make it easier for
- 52:22entry on a room depending on what
- 52:24direction it's going. Like if if I was
- 52:26super comfortable switching left
- 52:28shoulder, that makes that easy.
- 52:30Yeah.
- 52:30Right.
- 52:31I'm I'm sure there are people out there.
- 52:33I don't know a lot of gunfighters that
- 52:34switch shoulders when they're actually
- 52:36shooting at a bad guy because it's not
- 52:39comfortable for us. Do I think you
- 52:41should practice it? I do. I think you
- 52:43should know both sides in case you're
- 52:44injured. I suck my weak shoulder. I suck
- 52:48with my weak hand. Now you see me with
- 52:50my pistol. I'm trying to get better, but
- 52:52um and I should try to get better with
- 52:54my my um off shoulder, but
- 52:58[sighs] it's just not something that
- 52:59I've heard practiced. I don't think
- 53:02ever. I'm not saying it's not a thing,
- 53:04but it's probably not a thing.
- 53:08Yeah. We We should people focus on
- 53:10getting good with their strong arm.
- 53:12Yeah. Let's start there and then we'll
- 53:14go. You know what I mean?
