- 0:00all right guys on today's video we are
- 0:02bringing you two different trims both
- 0:04are on front feet from one of my pasture
- 0:07herds welcome back to neat the hoof
- 0:12guy first in the shoot is this girl
- 0:15favoring her left front foot and I think
- 0:17it's pretty obvious which claw this is
- 0:19on it's be on the medial claw you can
- 0:21see we've got some cracking here got
- 0:23some loose horn here that's all going to
- 0:26be connected so let's get started
- 0:34so where do you start when trimming a
- 0:36claw like this what I like to do is
- 0:38start to remove some of the debris start
- 0:40taking some of these layers down so I
- 0:41can get an idea of what it looks like
- 0:43underneath a lot of times there's going
- 0:45to be loose horn there's going to be
- 0:47debris on pasture cows you could find
- 0:49rocks in there so I like to get a good
- 0:51assessment of that before I just start
- 0:53grinding on it with my grinder you're
- 0:54going end up if there is a rock in there
- 0:57wrecking those carbides so what I like
- 0:59to do is just get a general assessment
- 1:01kind of clean this claw up a little bit
- 1:02before I get started with the actual
- 1:15trimming you hear that cow grumbling in
- 1:17the background it's not actually a cow
- 1:20that's a bull we've got him separated
- 1:22he's in a different pen because well I
- 1:24just don't want to have to mess with
- 1:25them when I'm trying to trim these cows
- 1:27but he's not too happy about that
- 1:48once I've got that General assessment
- 1:49done I can go and start trimming this
- 1:51foot what I'm going to do here is just
- 1:53try to get this cow back to where normal
- 1:55hoof angles and normal sole thicknesses
- 1:58not going to take too much off of that
- 1:59other claw because I'm going to put a
- 2:01block on that I want that claw a little
- 2:03bit deeper to take the weight off this
- 2:05medial claw so we're going to get it all
- 2:07trimmed up and then we'll go to work on
- 2:09the problem itself
- 2:43now with this one there's nothing too
- 2:44tricky here when it comes to locating
- 2:46the problem it's going to be under there
- 2:48that separation up above is going to
- 2:50connect to that so that's the next step
- 2:52we're going to tackle that remove all of
- 2:54the separated hoof horn and see what we
- 2:56got underneath that
- 3:10now the good part about separating that
- 3:11bull is I don't have to worry about him
- 3:13sneaking up on me when I'm trimming the
- 3:15bad part is I have to listen to him the
- 3:17rest of the day as he
- 3:19protests that other noise that's a cow
- 3:22with a cowbell on her collar the
- 3:24cowbells used for when they're grazing
- 3:25they're easier to locate out in the
- 3:27Hills when they're grazing you can't see
- 3:29them all the time
- 3:30that cowbell gives that
- 3:50away so what are we dealing with here
- 3:53well it could be a white line issue but
- 3:55what I think happened is she had a rock
- 3:57caught in there at one point because
- 3:59that ho was pretty big that's not
- 4:01something that normally is there just
- 4:03from a white line issue occasionally you
- 4:05can but typically there's something must
- 4:07have been up in there kind of eroded
- 4:09that area down as it went either way
- 4:13we've got a little bit of a lesion under
- 4:14there now so we got to get this area
- 4:16completely cleaned out get it trimmed
- 4:18down get all the loose horn removed from
- 4:20that and then we shouldn't have any more
- 4:28problems so how common are foot problems
- 4:31in pasture cows well you've heard me
- 4:33talk a lot about how a lot of these hoof
- 4:35problems are caused by pressure from
- 4:37cows standing on concrete walking on
- 4:39concrete and things like that and yet
- 4:42some pasture cows still have problems
- 4:44too so why is that well for pasture cows
- 4:48those problems are a a lot of the times
- 4:50a result of changes in feed when it
- 4:53comes to cows in confinement or cows
- 4:55that are in Barns all the time a lot of
- 4:57their feed stays pretty consistent
- 4:59they're fed a total mixed ration they um
- 5:04all the nutrients and things that they
- 5:05need stay at about the same levels all
- 5:08year long their feed doesn't change when
- 5:11it comes to pasture cows it changes
- 5:13quite a bit from just from the seasons
- 5:15in the pastures from the cows in the
- 5:18wintertime being fed a lot of hay and
- 5:21preserved feeds and then going out onto
- 5:23fresh grass those changes end up
- 5:26translating into problems in their feet
- 5:28they're just not good at being able to
- 5:31handle those things all the time here
- 5:33you can see what we've got going here
- 5:35there's a little bit of Aion under there
- 5:36yet so we're going to get that cleaned
- 5:38up we're going to get it wrapped and
- 5:39we're going to get Block on that other
- 5:40claw but going back to what we're
- 5:42talking about the changes in the feed
- 5:45while we don't see that a lot anymore
- 5:47with um conventional farming or cows in
- 5:51confinement it's just because of that
- 5:54consistency pasture cows go through a
- 5:56lot of different changes when they're
- 5:58out on pasture so that can translate
- 6:00into laminitis and other other problems
- 6:02in the feet that allow that that petal
- 6:05bone to move a little bit more than they
- 6:07would normally that is why we have the
- 6:10problem we're going to get this foot
- 6:11wrapped up then we're going to move on
- 6:13to cow number
- 6:26two no I did not forget the Block it's
- 6:29going on here in a
- 6:38second you thought that bull was loud
- 6:41before wait till I let this cow go and
- 6:43he can't get to her
- 6:50mhm now on to cow number two a little
- 6:53while back I did a video about how I
- 6:55became a hoof trimmer and how much hoof
- 6:57trimmers make and in that video we
- 6:59featured this hoof but I got a ton of
- 7:02comments about hey you got to talk us
- 7:04through this we want to know what
- 7:05happened with that foot so here we go
- 7:09what she had was a white line defect you
- 7:11can see where that original Mark was
- 7:13down below and up above we now have
- 7:17digital dermatitis in there that's why
- 7:20you see me wrap almost all of the white
- 7:22line issues that I work on with
- 7:24salicylic acid is exactly for this
- 7:27reason while there may not not be or I
- 7:30may not be able to see dermatitis on it
- 7:32at the time A lot of times that bacteria
- 7:35is there and that can keep this problem
- 7:37open for an extended period of time
- 7:40that's exactly what's happened here this
- 7:42originally was a white line issue that
- 7:44white line issue has healed but now we
- 7:46have digital dermatitis to deal with so
- 7:48now we still have to put a block and a
- 7:51wrap on this cow to take care of that
- 7:53now if you missed that first video or
- 7:55you want to watch this Trim in its
- 7:56entirety I will put a link down below
- 7:59that's going to do it for today guys
- 8:01thanks for watching
