  26. 1:01students from the program I welcome you
  27. 1:04and also thank you so much Ahmad I know
  28. 1:07you have a very busy schedule just
  29. 1:10really quickly like I said Omar has been
  30. 1:12a favorite of our of our of our students
  31. 1:16he's returned to sent on a college for
  32. 1:21the past year and a half and in 2013 he
  33. 1:24took the world examination set forth by
  34. 1:25the Judicial Council and he passed the
  35. 1:27first time he's gonna share with us how
  36. 1:29that came about and as you know the
  37. 1:31passing rate for that exam is it's very
  38. 1:34low so we're very very proud of him he's
  39. 1:36a role model he's based in Orange County
  40. 1:38and us when you pass that exam you're
  41. 1:42not only certified as a court
  42. 1:43interpreter but he's also certified as
  43. 1:45the medical interpreter so with that
  44. 1:48having said that I know that there's a
  45. 1:50longer introduction for all his
  46. 1:52accomplishment that he's done but I'm
  47. 1:54just gonna let him himself tell you how
  48. 1:57he came to the United States and how you
  49. 2:00know what was his language level fluency
  50. 2:04when he came when he first came and
  51. 2:06you're just gonna love his presentation
  52. 2:08so I loved oh my let me go ahead and
  53. 2:12unmute you okay
  54. 2:13all right hello everyone can you guys
  55. 2:17hear me yes okay they can actually this
  56. 2:21is I wasn't used to using a zoom we just
  57. 2:26began using a zoom for the depositions a
  58. 2:29couple of weeks ago due to the current
  59. 2:32virus pandemic but yeah I think I've
  60. 2:36seen some of the some of these faces
  61. 2:38before I guess some of these people look
  62. 2:41familiar
  63. 2:42so hello again the ones who do not know
  64. 2:45me my name is Omer Brady I used to be
  65. 2:48Omar Contreras and the reason I've
  66. 2:50changed my name is because I became a US
  67. 2:52citizen about 2 to 3 months ago in the
  68. 2:58month of January and now I have my dad's
  69. 3:02last name you know my adopted dad's last
  70. 3:04name his name is Brady so now my name is
  71. 3:07Brady and it's a lot easier to carry the
  72. 3:09last name Brady than rather than uh you
  73. 3:12know like Contreras Martinez in court
  74. 3:14you have to spell out your name every
  75. 3:16single time to plan for a legal
  76. 3:20proceeding so before I was like Oscar
  77. 3:23Omar Contreras - Martinez now it's just
  78. 3:26all my Brady so it's a lot easier now
  79. 3:28than it used to be in the past but um
  80. 3:31well I related my experience to some of
  81. 3:34you guys before and I came to the United
  82. 3:38States back in the year of 2002 actually
  83. 3:41was in September of 2002 and I didn't
  84. 3:46have a legal status when I came here I
  85. 3:49came here actually legally and I I
  86. 3:54struggled a lot I was one of the ESL
  87. 3:58students I'm sure most of you know what
  88. 4:00ESL is you know English as a second
  89. 4:03language so I put myself through school
  90. 4:05it was a difficult journey because you
  91. 4:09know I didn't have like I explained
  92. 4:12before to some of you guys said we
  93. 4:13didn't have the means to succeed and
  94. 4:16they didn't have a car they didn't have
  95. 4:18a green card I didn't have you know
  96. 4:21enough money to go to college so it was
  97. 4:24difficult huh but
  98. 4:27you know something that I can tell you
  99. 4:29now is that when you want to achieve a
  100. 4:31goal when you want to be successful you
  101. 4:34have to strive you have to apply
  102. 4:36yourself and then you'll be able to
  103. 4:38achieve what you want now I always
  104. 4:42wanted to be an interpreter always
  105. 4:43wanted to be a court interpreter and to
  106. 4:46be honest with you I didn't know exactly
  107. 4:48where how do the process work right so I
  108. 4:52put myself to school in the city of
  109. 4:54Santa Fe Springs and I studied really
  110. 4:59really hard I wanted to be a court
  111. 5:02interpreter then I realized that there
  112. 5:04were three and this is for you guys to
  113. 5:06know there are three different types of
  114. 5:09interpreters there is a medical
  115. 5:11interpreters administrative interpreters
  116. 5:14and certified court interpreters so in
  117. 5:17my case I went for the legal you know
  118. 5:21program in that only that takes about
  119. 5:24nine months you know when I went to that
  120. 5:26school in Santa Fe Springs but any
  121. 5:28school that you attend I know that it
  122. 5:31requires a lot of studying you know you
  123. 5:33have to dedicate two or three hours a
  124. 5:36day one hour a day you know at least to
  125. 5:39study and that is because you have to
  126. 5:41memorize a lot of words a lot of the
  127. 5:43legal terms you have to have a lot of
  128. 5:46you have to know the legal terminology
  129. 5:48you have to have the speed to interpret
  130. 5:51you have to know your words in English
  131. 5:54and Spanish and you have to know how to
  132. 5:56control your anxiety when you go to the
  133. 5:58test is something that I do remember is
  134. 6:01that many of my companions many of my
  135. 6:05classmates who actually fail the test
  136. 6:07they failed because they didn't know how
  137. 6:11to control the anxiety when they went
  138. 6:13for the test you know it's very it's
  139. 6:15very difficult sometimes to control
  140. 6:17yourself many times it's not so much the
  141. 6:19test to be honest with you many times is
  142. 6:21is it's about yourself and now let me
  143. 6:25give you an example I became a US
  144. 6:27citizen three months ago and I always
  145. 6:32knew that you know this is just for you
  146. 6:34to use it you set us an example and it's
  147. 6:37not so much about how the difficulty
  148. 6:40can be is about your own emotions and
  149. 6:43how you have to learn how to control
  150. 6:46your anxiety okay
  151. 6:48when I went from my citizenship test and
  152. 6:51I'm sure perhaps some of you have gone
  153. 6:52through that process a lot of people
  154. 6:55were telling me that you know passing
  155. 6:58that test was difficult and I was like
  156. 7:00well how can that be it's only a hundred
  157. 7:02questions you know they're gonna ask you
  158. 7:05ten questions and you'll be fine well
  159. 7:08the thing is that people get very
  160. 7:10nervous even with 10 questions they
  161. 7:13don't know what to do and how to answer
  162. 7:15those questions and they fail many
  163. 7:17people wait until they turn 60 something
  164. 7:19or 50 something so they can take the
  165. 7:21test in their native tongue in their
  166. 7:24native language and surprisingly
  167. 7:28speaking some people when they take that
  168. 7:31test which is only 10 questions the US
  169. 7:34citizenship test they fail and I'm like
  170. 7:37you know I was flowering I was like I
  171. 7:39was in shock but I was like how can you
  172. 7:41fail this test when it is so easy
  173. 7:44what's the same thing with the Merrick
  174. 7:47wicked test for interpreting it's
  175. 7:52exactly the same thing it's about how to
  176. 7:54control your anxiety how to control your
  177. 7:57emotions and you have to prepare well
  178. 7:59for the test you have to study you have
  179. 8:02to memorize things you have to practice
  180. 8:05a lot so when you go for your test and
  181. 8:08you can um you know more like being
  182. 8:11controlled yourself now um in my case I
  183. 8:15was nervous you know I'm not gonna say
  184. 8:18oh I wasn't nervous I had some level of
  185. 8:20anxiety I would say but something that
  186. 8:24really helps a lot something that really
  187. 8:26helps you a lot is when you study
  188. 8:29consistently it's not so many it's not
  189. 8:32so much how many hours a day is that you
  190. 8:34have to do it consistently
  191. 8:36you have to study you have to memorize
  192. 8:38your words you have to be your homework
  193. 8:39you have to take your classes that gives
  194. 8:42you a lot of confidence when you take
  195. 8:44your test now I you know like I said
  196. 8:50before there are three different levels
  197. 8:51of interpreters
  198. 8:53there is a medical interpreters I don't
  199. 8:56know if you know this already but for
  200. 8:59instance when you get medically
  201. 9:01certified you can only work at hospitals
  202. 9:03you know you can do you can do follow-up
  203. 9:06appointments with medical doctors you
  204. 9:08can work at any medical entity you can
  205. 9:12do some of the legal cases in this case
  206. 9:17you can do a depo prep a depo prep is a
  207. 9:20preparation for a deposition and that's
  208. 9:22when the attorney prepares his client
  209. 9:25for the deposition so in this case some
  210. 9:29medical interpreters can do that they
  211. 9:31can do the they can take care of the
  212. 9:34actual deposition but they can do the
  213. 9:37depth of what we call a depo prep but
  214. 9:39mainly medical interpreters have to be
  215. 9:42in the medical field
  216. 9:44now administrative interpreters when
  217. 9:47when you become an administrative
  218. 9:49interpreter you can do almost any legal
  219. 9:52proceeding except for going into a
  220. 9:54courtroom you can in order to be in
  221. 9:58court you have to be a certified court
  222. 10:00interpreter so that is as far as I know
  223. 10:03that is the only limitation that you
  224. 10:05have us as an administrative interpreter
  225. 10:08you can do medical assignments you know
  226. 10:10medical interpretations you can do that
  227. 10:13positions you can even go to the
  228. 10:14Immigration Department but you have to
  229. 10:16but you can't go into a court room and
  230. 10:19do a legal case with the attorneys as an
  231. 10:23interpreter now when you're a certified
  232. 10:25court interpreter that gives you a lot
  233. 10:28of freedom because you can do a variety
  234. 10:31of cases you can be in a court room you
  235. 10:34can do civil cases criminal cases you
  236. 10:37can go to the Immigration Department you
  237. 10:39can even get a job as a you know as an
  238. 10:42interpreter at a hospital because when
  239. 10:45you are a certified court interpreter
  240. 10:47that allows you to work pretty much
  241. 10:50every word the only thing if you're a
  242. 10:52state certified um the only thing is
  243. 10:55that you cannot do federal cases you
  244. 10:58know you that requires a different
  245. 11:00certification but other than that you um
  246. 11:04you can do pretty much any
  247. 11:07any kind of legal cases some
  248. 11:10interpreters like immigration a lot a
  249. 11:13lot of them get a little nervous because
  250. 11:15immigration can be a little tough when
  251. 11:18it is when it is an asylum case if it is
  252. 11:22for let's say your wife is requesting
  253. 11:24you and or a father is requesting his
  254. 11:28son or his daughter or the son is
  255. 11:31requesting the father those cases the
  256. 11:33son interpreter you don't really
  257. 11:34struggle a lot because it's pretty easy
  258. 11:36you know the questions they ask is
  259. 11:38pretty much background information like
  260. 11:41you know what is your address and where
  261. 11:44who's your employer things like that but
  262. 11:47if you do an asylum case you know you
  263. 11:49come from another country or the person
  264. 11:51comes from another country and he's
  265. 11:53looking for asylum in the United States
  266. 11:55because he's been abused in his country
  267. 11:57or he's gone through some you know like
  268. 12:00violence and things like that then those
  269. 12:04cases can be pretty tough so you have to
  270. 12:08be well prepared in the way that you
  271. 12:10have to know a lot of the legal terms
  272. 12:13and you have to have a lot of knowledge
  273. 12:16in the English or Spanish because you're
  274. 12:20going to be they're gonna be asking you
  275. 12:24a lot of questions well not you but the
  276. 12:26in this case the applicants in assigning
  277. 12:28kurkuri you have to be able to answer
  278. 12:30you know to interpret correctly because
  279. 12:33there is gonna be an interpreter who's
  280. 12:35gonna be over the phone that's something
  281. 12:37that they do almost like any as far as I
  282. 12:40know any immigration center that handles
  283. 12:43asylum cases they happen over the phone
  284. 12:46interpreter so you're doing your
  285. 12:49interpreting during the you know case
  286. 12:52and there is an interpreter who's on the
  287. 12:55phone just listening to your
  288. 12:56interpretation and he's also listening
  289. 12:58to where the applicants is saying and if
  290. 13:01you make a mistake then immediately he's
  291. 13:04supposed to tell the immigration officer
  292. 13:06you know that he has some that you have
  293. 13:08made a mistake and if you don't feel
  294. 13:10like you're in control if the
  295. 13:11immigration officer feels that you're
  296. 13:14not competent as an interpreter then
  297. 13:17you're gonna get dismissed
  298. 13:19so that's one
  299. 13:20things that you know as an interpreter
  300. 13:23you have to read a lot reading really
  301. 13:26helps you tremendously watching the news
  302. 13:28honestly that that's one of the things
  303. 13:30that really even for the for your chest
  304. 13:37anytime sweetie really helps
  305. 13:40tremendously because the more you read
  306. 13:42the more you expand your vocabulary
  307. 13:44the more knowledge you acquire and then
  308. 13:47you'll be more well prepared before when
  309. 13:49you take your test you feel more more in
  310. 13:52control so that's pretty much in terms
  311. 13:54of the you know the levels of you know
  312. 13:58different kind of interpreters that
  313. 13:59there are you know out there medical
  314. 14:02interpreters administrative interpreters
  315. 14:04court interpreters also it seemed be a
  316. 14:11market rates in terms of money money is
  317. 14:16pretty good in this industry when you
  318. 14:19work independently as far as I know when
  319. 14:22you get a full-time job at a Superior
  320. 14:26Court I think they start paying about
  321. 14:29eighty around eighty thousand dollars a
  322. 14:31year plus plus benefits that's a
  323. 14:33full-time employee you know when you're
  324. 14:35certain
  325. 14:36once you become certified and you want
  326. 14:38to work for the Superior Court they pay
  327. 14:40about eighty eighty-five thousand
  328. 14:42dollars a year plus benefits so if that
  329. 14:45is what you want to do which many of my
  330. 14:48former classmates are doing now they're
  331. 14:53working they're working as employees you
  332. 14:56know at some of the superior courts and
  333. 14:58Los Angeles and even here in Orange
  334. 15:00County that's great if you want to work
  335. 15:03independently let's say you want to make
  336. 15:05more money and you want to be more
  337. 15:07financially independent then you can
  338. 15:10establish your own rates and that's one
  339. 15:13of the you know amazing things as a
  340. 15:16certified court interpreter who works as
  341. 15:18a freelancer you can establish your own
  342. 15:21rates and I think I shared some of the
  343. 15:24numbers with you guys before and I'm
  344. 15:29gonna share some numbers with you now so
  345. 15:31that way you have an idea of how much
  346. 15:33you will be making as an interpreter
  347. 15:35because a lot of interpreters do not
  348. 15:38want to talk about you know numbers for
  349. 15:41some reason they are afraid to say oh
  350. 15:42you know what I charge two hundred
  351. 15:44dollars or three hundred and fifty
  352. 15:46dollars or five hundred dollars or a
  353. 15:48hundred dollars but that's reality and I
  354. 15:50really struggle a lot because when I
  355. 15:53became an interpreter I had my license
  356. 15:55already and I was like how much am I
  357. 15:58supposed to charge you no no no one
  358. 16:00really is guiding me so if no one really
  359. 16:03gives you any guidance you're gonna make
  360. 16:05a lot of mistakes and you can either be
  361. 16:07charging too much and that's gonna put
  362. 16:10you in this advantage you know in
  363. 16:11comparison to other interpreters or you
  364. 16:15can be charging charging too little so
  365. 16:18they're gonna be calling you a lot but
  366. 16:20just because you're working a lot
  367. 16:21doesn't mean you're making good money or
  368. 16:23enough money so that's something that
  369. 16:26you have to know in this case if you
  370. 16:29want to become as you know certified and
  371. 16:33you have your certification and now you
  372. 16:36know you're gonna be working as an
  373. 16:38interpreter then you have to know
  374. 16:40exactly how much money you can charge
  375. 16:42now
  376. 16:43here are the numbers I explained this to
  377. 16:47you guys before that we interpreters do
  378. 16:50not charge per hour okay we charge for
  379. 16:55we go for like half-day in a full day
  380. 16:59okay so a half day for us is from zero
  381. 17:03to three hours so let's say an agency
  382. 17:08calls you okay and many people are gonna
  383. 17:10be calling you every single day because
  384. 17:13there is a lot of work for interpreters
  385. 17:16who are certified so an agency calls you
  386. 17:19let's say today there is Monday you know
  387. 17:21it's after 7:00 p.m. so somebody will be
  388. 17:24calling you and tell you hey I need an
  389. 17:26interpreter for a deposition tomorrow in
  390. 17:30Newport Beach and you live in the Santa
  391. 17:33Ana area okay so you're available
  392. 17:36yes I'm available all right so how much
  393. 17:38do you charge well right now
  394. 17:41interpreters are charging between a
  395. 17:44hundred and eighty dollars a hundred
  396. 17:46seventy-five 165 some of them charge
  397. 17:50even up to $200 for a half-day okay so
  398. 17:54let's say you're gonna charge a hundred
  399. 17:57and seventy five dollars okay so you're
  400. 18:00one of those that do not charge too much
  401. 18:02and do not charge too little out of
  402. 18:04those $175 the agency is supposed to pay
  403. 18:09you you're supposed to charge for
  404. 18:10mileage which are after twenty five
  405. 18:15miles okay so after twenty five miles we
  406. 18:18charge for mileage so since you're gonna
  407. 18:22you know you're in the city of Santa Ana
  408. 18:24you're gonna be covering your assignment
  409. 18:26your deposition in Newport Beach that's
  410. 18:29not more than 25 miles so in this case
  411. 18:31you won't be charging for mileage but in
  412. 18:35Newport Beach
  413. 18:35almost every law office in the city of
  414. 18:38Irvine in Newport Beach
  415. 18:39almost every office that you go to you
  416. 18:40have to pay for parking fees and in
  417. 18:43parking is expensive it goes up to $20
  418. 18:46$25 $18 $15 so let's say you pay $15 you
  419. 18:52know for parking so you don't want to
  420. 18:56pay out of your money because then
  421. 18:58you're not making enough money you want
  422. 19:00to charge your rate because you're
  423. 19:02charging for your interpreting services
  424. 19:04you're a certified court interpreter
  425. 19:06okay so you charge for your deposition
  426. 19:10and then on top of that the agency is
  427. 19:14supposed to compensate for mileage fees
  428. 19:18and parking fees so you add 175 plus 15
  429. 19:23that's a hundred and ninety five dollars
  430. 19:24okay that's how much money you're gonna
  431. 19:27be billing to the agency a hundred and
  432. 19:30ninety five dollars for a half day now
  433. 19:33half day is up to three hours but let's
  434. 19:35say the deposition this really happens a
  435. 19:37lot you were hired for a half-day the
  436. 19:40deposition lasted three hours in 25
  437. 19:44minutes to give you an example that's
  438. 19:46more than three hours right so obviously
  439. 19:48that's not a half-day anymore that's a
  440. 19:50full day so the agency is for I mean is
  441. 19:54obligated to pay you a full day rate so
  442. 19:58in the
  443. 20:00a full day you know just you just double
  444. 20:02the number 175 175 is 300 and about $350
  445. 20:10right see I'm bad with numbers guys so
  446. 20:15hold on my dad is gonna do the math for
  447. 20:18me yeah
  448. 20:21three hundred and fifty dollars so you
  449. 20:24you know the deposition is lasted three
  450. 20:30hours and 25 minutes okay
  451. 20:32so since it went over the three hours
  452. 20:34and you're charging three hundred and
  453. 20:35fifty dollars plus the parking fee you
  454. 20:40don't want to pay any fees out of your
  455. 20:44money this is just for your interpreting
  456. 20:46services the agency which is the one
  457. 20:49that is leaving you it's making money
  458. 20:51out of you they're supposed to
  459. 20:52compensate for that fee so it's three
  460. 20:55hundred and fifty dollars plus fifteen
  461. 20:58dollars for the parking so you're gonna
  462. 21:00be charging three hundred and sixty-five
  463. 21:04dollars how much that's how much money
  464. 21:06you're gonna be charging to the agency
  465. 21:08okay and in this industry we already
  466. 21:12know that when the deposition goes over
  467. 21:13the three hours so you don't even have
  468. 21:14to call the agency and say hey the
  469. 21:17deposition is gonna go over the three
  470. 21:19hours so you have to pay me a full day
  471. 21:21you don't have to do that because you
  472. 21:23don't want to interrupt the deposition
  473. 21:25you know attorneys do not like when
  474. 21:27you're interrupting so you just keep
  475. 21:28going in this industry we already know
  476. 21:31that if it goes over the three hours
  477. 21:34then then it's a full day so you just
  478. 21:36call them at the end of the deposition
  479. 21:38you tell them okay that therefore went
  480. 21:39over the three hours this is the end
  481. 21:41time so you know I'm gonna bill you for
  482. 21:44a full day perfect plus the parking fee
  483. 21:46so you always have to keep your receipt
  484. 21:50you know that the Machine gives you at
  485. 21:52the parking lot so you can charge for
  486. 21:54all that but let's say the deposition
  487. 21:57same scenario but the deposition was not
  488. 22:00in Newport Beach it was in Los Angeles
  489. 22:01and from Santa Ana to Los Angeles let's
  490. 22:05say it's forty miles one way all right
  491. 22:07so forty miles one way plus forty miles
  492. 22:10coming back we're talking about 80 miles
  493. 22:13so 80 miles and then you do the math I
  494. 22:16think right now we charge a 56 56 cents
  495. 22:21according to the IRS standards
  496. 22:24okay so 50 cents per mile so this is how
  497. 22:28we're gonna do it so now you went to
  498. 22:30their PO in Los Angeles usually
  499. 22:32deposition in Los Angeles really the
  500. 22:34depositions last more than three hours
  501. 22:36so how much is for a miles so we're
  502. 22:40gonna do the math so realistically you
  503. 22:42know how much money you're gonna be
  504. 22:43making once you have your license okay
  505. 22:46so so that you go to Los Angeles
  506. 22:51deposition lasted almost three hours
  507. 22:53that's a full day so it's three hundred
  508. 22:56and fifty dollars plus forty four
  509. 22:59dollars in eighty cents because you're
  510. 23:02going in mileage this is for the mileage
  511. 23:04so you're gonna do the math remember
  512. 23:07it's 40 just do the math you know in
  513. 23:12this case let's say it's 40 miles going
  514. 23:14to Los Angeles or in my house coming
  515. 23:16back it's 80 miles
  516. 23:17so in money you're gonna be charging
  517. 23:20forty-four dollars and 80 cents plus the
  518. 23:23parking fees because in Los Angeles
  519. 23:24parking is quite expensive so let's say
  520. 23:27you're paying $25 for pardon so now
  521. 23:32we're gonna do the math three hundred
  522. 23:33and fifty dollars plus forty four
  523. 23:37dollars and eighty cents plus twenty
  524. 23:40five dollars and the number is let's see
  525. 23:48we're here 350 plus forty four dollars
  526. 23:57cents plus $25 we're talking about four
  527. 24:02hundred and $19 with eighty cents okay
  528. 24:06that is how much money you're gonna be
  529. 24:08making for less than four hours of work
  530. 24:11now when you become an interpreter
  531. 24:14people will want you to work for them
  532. 24:17only if you are reliable that means that
  533. 24:21you always look nice when you go to work
  534. 24:23you know you have to look presentable
  535. 24:25you have to look perfect
  536. 24:27you know you have to be nice to people
  537. 24:28you have to be on time
  538. 24:30nothing like oh you know the Interpol
  539. 24:32everybody's here the interpreter is late
  540. 24:34we don't know where he is you don't want
  541. 24:36to do that because then you start
  542. 24:38creating a bad reputation for yourself
  543. 24:40and people won't be calling you anymore
  544. 24:42and people are gonna be talking really
  545. 24:43bad things about you as an interpreter
  546. 24:45because they'll be like that interpreter
  547. 24:47is not reliable so you want to create
  548. 24:49this is your own business you want to
  549. 24:52have a good reputation and trust me
  550. 24:53people are going to love you and people
  551. 24:56are gonna be calling you a lot so right
  552. 24:58now you know in less than four hours you
  553. 25:03made four hundred and $19 with a eighty
  554. 25:05cents okay
  555. 25:07because mileage you know your car is
  556. 25:10gonna start wearing off you know like
  557. 25:12all the you know the mileage on your car
  558. 25:14and stuff so you don't want to pay for
  559. 25:17that they have to pay for all of that
  560. 25:19parking fees also you know they have to
  561. 25:22pay for all that because remember the
  562. 25:24agencies are making money out of you so
  563. 25:27you're coming you're gonna be coming
  564. 25:29back home and you know agencies know
  565. 25:31that you're a certified court
  566. 25:32interpreter now somebody calls you and
  567. 25:34say okay I do have another deposition
  568. 25:37you can schedule two depositions a day
  569. 25:40okay so even if one leper goes over the
  570. 25:43three hours you can still do another
  571. 25:45depo because it's the if the deposition
  572. 25:47starts at 10:00 a.m. your morning
  573. 25:50deposition starts at 10:00 a.m.
  574. 25:52by law and they only hire you for a
  575. 25:55half-day by law you can you not stay
  576. 25:57there until 1:00 p.m. but let's say the
  577. 25:59depo goes over you know time and you
  578. 26:02stay there until 1:20 p.m. ok that's a
  579. 26:05full day level but you also have a
  580. 26:07deposition at 2 o'clock and you have to
  581. 26:10learn how to manage your time in your
  582. 26:12business if you're gonna be in Los
  583. 26:13Angeles maybe you want to get another
  584. 26:15deposition for the 2:00 p.m. in the Los
  585. 26:17Angeles area so you can go to your next
  586. 26:20step you station that's how I work
  587. 26:22things out in this business it's same
  588. 26:23same here in in Orange County
  589. 26:26so you go to your 2:00 p.m. depo because
  590. 26:31you like working hard and you want to
  591. 26:34make good money so you go to your next
  592. 26:36step oh and your next step
  593. 26:38still only two hours okay more than you
  594. 26:40charge one seventy-five
  595. 26:41now if you add four hundred and $19 with
  596. 26:4480 cents plus a hundred and seventy five
  597. 26:47dollars we are talking about five
  598. 26:51hundred and ninety four dollars a day
  599. 26:53and this is realistically speaking I'm
  600. 26:55not just talking you know like giving
  601. 26:56you false hopes and stuff this is how
  602. 26:59much money you can make for you know
  603. 27:01less than eight hours a day of work so
  604. 27:04we're talking about five hundred and
  605. 27:06ninety four dollars with it let's say
  606. 27:07six hundred dollars so that's how you
  607. 27:12you know and you charge and it's like
  608. 27:15that for legal documents also um more
  609. 27:18times it's okay so yeah same thing for
  610. 27:22legal documents you know you charge per
  611. 27:24word I charge about 25 cents per word 20
  612. 27:2722 cents per word so um a certified
  613. 27:31court interpreters guys really you can
  614. 27:34make plenty of money you can make
  615. 27:36hundreds of dollars a day you know
  616. 27:40interpreting and if you really are you
  617. 27:42know someday you open your own agency
  618. 27:44you have your own clients you'll be
  619. 27:46making probably I don't know $1,000 a
  620. 27:48day over and over a thousand dollars a
  621. 27:50day so this is how you know this is how
  622. 27:54you charge as an interpreter but
  623. 27:56remember mileage and parking fees has to
  624. 28:00come out of the agency some agencies can
  625. 28:03be tricky with the new ones so remember
  626. 28:05this when you have your new in this
  627. 28:08business and you have a license don't
  628. 28:10let people take advantage of you okay I
  629. 28:12take that from me no one really told me
  630. 28:15the things I'm sharing with you right
  631. 28:17now in some agencies took advantage of
  632. 28:19me but then I learned I was like this is
  633. 28:22not the way it is a certified court
  634. 28:25interpreter is someone valuable and they
  635. 28:27need your services if you don't take
  636. 28:28their job the agency probably won't find
  637. 28:31anyone else and they won't be able to
  638. 28:33make money so you have to tell them yes
  639. 28:36I'll take the assignment but just keep
  640. 28:37in mind that I you know I charge for
  641. 28:40parking fees and I also charge for
  642. 28:42mileage fees if it applies why because
  643. 28:46when they know that your new interpreter
  644. 28:48they know and they think that you're
  645. 28:49desperate for money
  646. 28:51and they will say okay how much do you
  647. 28:53charge and you will tell them no I
  648. 28:54charge let's say by then you will be
  649. 28:57charging $200 you know for a half-day
  650. 29:00and they will tell you well you can you
  651. 29:02have to pay mileage and and parking fee
  652. 29:04out of that because we don't compensate
  653. 29:06for mileage and we don't compensate for
  654. 29:08parking fees do not take those
  655. 29:10assignments because they will be taking
  656. 29:12advantage of you okay so they pay for
  657. 29:15those fees you you know you make your
  658. 29:17money for you know those three and two
  659. 29:20hundred dollars or three hundred fifty
  660. 29:22dollars whatever it's only for your
  661. 29:24interpreting services only okay that's
  662. 29:28pretty much how it works and let's see
  663. 29:33as time goes by you will be creating
  664. 29:37more and more experience okay at the
  665. 29:39beginning you're gonna feel like a fish
  666. 29:40out of water when you're doing a
  667. 29:42deposition when you're when you're
  668. 29:44standing in front of the judge and
  669. 29:45you're doing a trial you'll feel very
  670. 29:48nervous probably okay so but that's not
  671. 29:51gonna be forever you know one day you're
  672. 29:53gonna feel very comfortable doing this
  673. 29:55because it's very repetitive very
  674. 29:58repetitive it's pretty much the same
  675. 29:59thing you know so over time you know as
  676. 30:02the months or the years go by you're
  677. 30:05gonna be you know you're gonna be
  678. 30:06cultivating more and more experience
  679. 30:08people are gonna start liking you
  680. 30:10because you know you'll be reliable and
  681. 30:12that's how you create your own business
  682. 30:14and let me tell you something really
  683. 30:15quick before I finish even with this
  684. 30:18pandemic okay there is work you know
  685. 30:22I've been working pretty much every
  686. 30:24single day doing depositions translating
  687. 30:27documents so you know um take that from
  688. 30:31me and also certify the court
  689. 30:32interpreter I can tell you that you're
  690. 30:34not gonna be saying I'm not sitting at
  691. 30:35home I mean today I worked pretty much
  692. 30:37all day I had four assignments I had to
  693. 30:41get one of those assignments to one of
  694. 30:43my interpreters because I couldn't cover
  695. 30:45the four assignments myself so yeah
  696. 30:49there is work even under this you know
  697. 30:51cope with nineteen pandemic when you
  698. 30:54when you have a license as a certified
  699. 30:56court interpreter they they always need
  700. 30:59your services you know and even now with
  701. 31:01this pandemic a certified court intro
  702. 31:04someone valuable you know and and the
  703. 31:06legal system cannot put on hold all
  704. 31:09those cases for who knows how long you
  705. 31:12know they have to move on with the
  706. 31:13depositions they're desperate right now
  707. 31:16so yeah even under this pandemic there
  708. 31:19is work there is work if you get abuse
  709. 31:22try you know to get your license you
  710. 31:24know you're going to have word so I know
  711. 31:28you know right now the things are
  712. 31:31discouraging a lot of people are moving
  713. 31:34on with fear and I don't blame them
  714. 31:36you know circumstances are not so
  715. 31:38favorable right now but just remember
  716. 31:41this this is worth this is a very nice
  717. 31:45career you're going to be making plenty
  718. 31:48of money to have a comfortable life and
  719. 31:51and it's fantastic so keep using your
  720. 31:55you know bilingual skills sharpen your
  721. 31:58bilingual skills strive to get certified
  722. 32:01and remember my words it's gonna be
  723. 32:04worth it you won't regret it
  724. 32:05okay so that's awesome thank you and and
  725. 32:11our class goes till 8:30 but we just you
  726. 32:15know you're a special guest so you could
  727. 32:17take as much time as as you want I do
  728. 32:19know that um the students are already
  729. 32:22asking questions are you able to see the
  730. 32:24chat I have some questions too but I'm
  731. 32:26gonna give them up I'm gonna give them
  732. 32:28preference that's Ramon here's the
  733. 32:31question okay what is his question what
  734. 32:35is passing score what was the average
  735. 32:37passing score in your case um when I
  736. 32:40took my test I did my test about six
  737. 32:44years ago I would say passing score was
  738. 32:4970% and I think it's still 70% so real
  739. 32:55quick I'm gonna explain this in less
  740. 32:57than two minutes the oral examination is
  741. 33:02made up of four components which is the
  742. 33:06simultaneous component the consecutive
  743. 33:10component it is so Stu it also includes
  744. 33:14the English and Spanish translation
  745. 33:18sigh translation in Spanish the English
  746. 33:20okay so you have to pass the four of
  747. 33:23them it's the four components in the
  748. 33:26passing score is 70% so if you score 69
  749. 33:31are one of them no matter how much you
  750. 33:34got into you know for the other three
  751. 33:36you're going to fail the test it has to
  752. 33:38be 70% or more for you to pass your oral
  753. 33:42examination okay so that's and I know
  754. 33:48right now you mentioned that you there's
  755. 33:50a lot of work even though the courts are
  756. 33:53closed how are you doing the depositions
  757. 33:55are you doing them over the phone we're
  758. 33:58doing depositions over the phone we
  759. 34:01assume so you know just like right now
  760. 34:06like with you guys I you know I log in
  761. 34:09to zoom and then I and then I see the
  762. 34:14attorneys and I hear their voices and
  763. 34:16they ask questions to the deponents or
  764. 34:18the applicants I interpret they see me
  765. 34:21they hear my voice and it's like if we
  766. 34:23were doing the deposition in a
  767. 34:25conference room yeah it's exactly the
  768. 34:27same way so is this for Moseley Orange
  769. 34:31County or for other counties that you're
  770. 34:33joined is them for other counties
  771. 34:36I am listed on the master master list I
  772. 34:40am one of the interpreters who you know
  773. 34:43I listed Orange County as my main area
  774. 34:48in their Los Angeles in Riverside County
  775. 34:51but right now with the pandemic some
  776. 34:56attorneys are in San Diego some others
  777. 34:59are you know like some demos or you know
  778. 35:01I mean people are all over the place
  779. 35:02because they're doing the deposition
  780. 35:04from home so yeah but when I go to
  781. 35:10mainly County in Los Angeles Orange
  782. 35:13County Los Angeles have a lot of work la
  783. 35:16a la it really has a lot of work so you
  784. 35:19don't really need to go like some
  785. 35:21Bernardino or San Diego you don't need
  786. 35:23to do that there is a lot of work here I
  787. 35:25was under the impression right now I
  788. 35:28went on the court well for the Riverside
  789. 35:30San Bernardino County
  790. 35:32not Riverside I was under the impression
  791. 35:34since the courts are closed that there's
  792. 35:36no filing of documents right now but but
  793. 35:39what you're saying is that there's still
  794. 35:40depositions going and that they're still
  795. 35:42pretty probably doing if Eileen um yeah
  796. 35:44well there's criminal and there is civil
  797. 35:47and the the courts are open not to be
  798. 35:51public but they're open for instance
  799. 35:54market compensation the workers workers
  800. 35:57compensation Appeals Board appeals
  801. 35:59boards are open not to the public but to
  802. 36:03the attorneys so in either their
  803. 36:05positions we assume you know everything
  804. 36:09is done remotely so the attorneys go to
  805. 36:11the appeals board and they bring the
  806. 36:13documents to the judge and then the
  807. 36:15judge approves or disapproves the
  808. 36:16documents is the the judge studies the
  809. 36:19documents okay so um but via the
  810. 36:22superior courts in the workers
  811. 36:25compensation Appeals Board are still
  812. 36:27open and I think you mentioned too that
  813. 36:31right now with the pandemic you were
  814. 36:32doing some medical interpreting as well
  815. 36:34with the pending I haven't really done
  816. 36:36so well I'm actually afraid to go to the
  817. 36:40medical clinics but we've got some
  818. 36:43medical assignments
  819. 36:46I bet I've farmed them out to other
  820. 36:49interpreters because I really don't want
  821. 36:51to do it myself and some interpreters
  822. 36:53are so willing to go to the medical
  823. 36:56clinics but yeah we've got some medical
  824. 36:59assignments saying
  825. 37:01my specialty is mainly I mean I love
  826. 37:05doing medical I hope we get all because
  827. 37:09we have an agency so I focus mainly on
  828. 37:12doing depositions doing a you know
  829. 37:15immigration workers come simple cases
  830. 37:18that's what I focused on mainly but I do
  831. 37:21love medical assignments I really really
  832. 37:24do go into medical offices and
  833. 37:26interpreting for people who are sick and
  834. 37:28stuff you know I like doing that also
  835. 37:30but right now there is a lot of lot of
  836. 37:34depositions a lot of legal work so I
  837. 37:37have a question here from student
  838. 37:39Jessica Gonzalez she said when do you
  839. 37:41start charging for your services when
  840. 37:43you walk out the door when you leave
  841. 37:45your
  842. 37:45well when you walk in the door for them
  843. 37:48or when you leave your house that's a
  844. 37:49really good question and I forgot to
  845. 37:51mention this to you guys before remember
  846. 37:53when I when I told you that if somebody
  847. 37:55you know the agency calls you one day in
  848. 37:58advance two days in advance
  849. 38:00or a week before we apply a certified
  850. 38:05portent workers we applied the 24-hour
  851. 38:08cancellation fee for instance you start
  852. 38:13charging from the moment you quote
  853. 38:15number one if the assignment cancels
  854. 38:19okay let's say that hire your services
  855. 38:21today for tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
  856. 38:23but they cancel today at five o'clock
  857. 38:25you still charge for that half-day or
  858. 38:28full-day without going to work and you
  859. 38:32start charging from the moment you walk
  860. 38:35into the law office if they tell you
  861. 38:36that that position is going to start at
  862. 38:3810:00 a.m. okay you're right and then
  863. 38:41let's say you arrive at 9:45 you're not
  864. 38:43going to charge you know your time from
  865. 38:449:45 you charge from the time they told
  866. 38:46you that that position was going to
  867. 38:48start and 95% of the time that they pose
  868. 38:52do not start on time we started told
  869. 38:5410:20 10:30 11:00 a.m. 11:15 so but you
  870. 39:00start charging from the moment they told
  871. 39:02you that depo was going to start and the
  872. 39:05end time is what they put on the record
  873. 39:08whether it's their court reporter puts
  874. 39:10on the record the end time is let's say
  875. 39:12one o'clock or 1:20 p.m. that is the end
  876. 39:16time so you charge from the moment they
  877. 39:18tell you that that PO is going to start
  878. 39:19from the moment the deposition ends and
  879. 39:25also from a student in the valley all
  880. 39:29the way in in the San Fernando Valley me
  881. 39:31Rhonda says would you recommend any
  882. 39:33particular study materials any books
  883. 39:35anything to help them prepare he's a
  884. 39:38he's a he's preparing for the court of
  885. 39:42the court interpreter examination and I
  886. 39:44know he's a perhaps hoping to take it in
  887. 39:46the next year right well there are books
  888. 39:54on their books that you know you can
  889. 39:56study I
  890. 39:57have some words there is a company that
  891. 40:02sells some books and you can buy them
  892. 40:06online there are certain courses you can
  893. 40:08buy and there is also well this school
  894. 40:11in Santa Fe Springs which is where I
  895. 40:14went you know for my preparation for the
  896. 40:17test and you have to focus on the legal
  897. 40:23terms that's pretty much where you have
  898. 40:25to focus on there are certain you know
  899. 40:27like keywords that they're gonna you
  900. 40:29know they're gonna be using on the test
  901. 40:31and those keywords really count a lot
  902. 40:34because there are certain words that
  903. 40:36have more points on the test than others
  904. 40:39so there are books that you can purchase
  905. 40:41online there is this school in Santa Fe
  906. 40:43Springs where you can buy your books in
  907. 40:45and you can you know not just the books
  908. 40:48but they also sell you like a CD or
  909. 40:50something so you can study you know
  910. 40:52things on the computer so you can
  911. 40:54practice your speed you can practice
  912. 40:56your you know you can check on your
  913. 40:58accuracy of your interpretation so that
  914. 41:01helps a lot and really reading guys
  915. 41:04helps a lot you have to read as much as
  916. 41:07you can doesn't mean that you have to
  917. 41:09sit and read for the next you know like
  918. 41:10every three or four hours a day you know
  919. 41:12not like that but if you can just keep
  920. 41:15consistency with your reading that
  921. 41:17honestly that gives you a lot of
  922. 41:19confidence when you when you go for your
  923. 41:21test okay and on that same lines I know
  924. 41:24that um one of our other students is
  925. 41:27asking you already answer what kind of
  926. 41:30materials because I know some of them
  927. 41:31are there SIBO the interpreters company
  928. 41:33oh the SIBO materials yes right that's
  929. 41:36one of those books uh-huh that's one of
  930. 41:38the books that I that I studied myself
  931. 41:40and also the books from school in Santa
  932. 41:44Fe Springs you know those those two
  933. 41:47books the ones from Santa Fe Springs and
  934. 41:49the ones from placebo they really helped
  935. 41:52tremendously now I see that Ingrid is
  936. 41:55asking me what is the name of the school
  937. 41:58in Santa Fe Spring
  938. 41:59it's cool it's called a Southern
  939. 42:02California school of interpretation
  940. 42:04that's the name of that's the name of
  941. 42:06the school he looks to non students from
  942. 42:10there I
  943. 42:11I I think they do I really think they do
  944. 42:13that they sell books to those students
  945. 42:17and and you can ask them if they say no
  946. 42:21we don't sell those books to the
  947. 42:23students I can share some of my books
  948. 42:26with you or I can even you know help you
  949. 42:28guys to obtain some of those books since
  950. 42:31I'm one of the former's former students
  951. 42:33from Southern California school of
  952. 42:36interpretation but I'm sure they will
  953. 42:38sell you the books because mr. Wagner is
  954. 42:41pretty you know he likes helping people
  955. 42:44so he's gonna sell you the books I don't
  956. 42:45think he's gonna say no and I know that
  957. 42:48I'm on that team lying to my was saying
  958. 42:50a study guide only study guide that we
  959. 42:52have listed is the one from the actual
  960. 42:55third party data for America that does
  961. 42:57that the testing in sundered the
  962. 43:00Judicial Council and they'd only have
  963. 43:02some sample questions so we don't have
  964. 43:05anything besides that I know that one of
  965. 43:08the students said where can she get a
  966. 43:09study guide for the test so we do have
  967. 43:11the self assessment form the Judicial
  968. 43:14Council and then the the Primerica study
  969. 43:18guide that's about it that we have we
  970. 43:21are going to read be reaching out to you
  971. 43:25and Marguerite our instructor for the
  972. 43:26legal terminology because we do plan to
  973. 43:29do more prep sessions for the students
  974. 43:32so that we can help them prepare for the
  975. 43:34for the examinations yes yes there's
  976. 43:37also another question can you see it in
  977. 43:38the chat from student Tomaso compo right
  978. 43:41be right above ingrid the one that you
  979. 43:43just read let's see how long it took to
  980. 43:50be certified and did ever expect
  981. 43:53would get this far in life what was your
  982. 43:55worst experience that ever happened to
  983. 43:58you on job and word ii do or you
  984. 44:02recommend study the worst experience i
  985. 44:05well i have to tell you first the worst
  986. 44:07experience I had as a student when I was
  987. 44:10in the same circumstances as you guys so
  988. 44:12this is gonna give you a lot of hope
  989. 44:13okay a lot of people think that I'm a
  990. 44:16great interpreter that's where a lot of
  991. 44:18attorneys say and even my father has
  992. 44:20heard how the attorneys that complements
  993. 44:22my interpreting skills
  994. 44:24but when I was attending school mr.
  995. 44:28Wagner in Santa Fe Springs gave us a
  996. 44:31mock examination okay and I think it was
  997. 44:35like 60 about I'm giving an
  998. 44:37approximation it was like 67 these
  999. 44:39students in the classroom and he gave us
1000. 44:41a mock exam to see the level of our
1001. 44:44knowledge you know us in progress and if
1002. 44:46we were ready for the test because we
1003. 44:47were like about half a year away from
1004. 44:49the test and then so we took the mock
1005. 44:52exam and then the next week he began
1006. 44:56giving results so a lot of the students
1007. 44:59and he forgot about me and he walked out
  1008. 45:01of the classroom and then I answer I
1009. 45:04said mr. Wagner he said yes and I said
1010. 45:06uh what about my result and then he said
1011. 45:10yeah he said you were the worst are you
1012. 45:13are you occupied the third place from
1013. 45:16the bottom to the top and there were
1014. 45:17like 60 or 70 students he said you were
1015. 45:22like your score was really bad if you
1016. 45:24were to take the test today you would
  1017. 45:26have failed badly and I was like I I was
1018. 45:29very discouraged they really broke my
1019. 45:31heart a lot and then he said your
1020. 45:34consecutive skills are really bad really
1021. 45:37really bad so you have to really work
1022. 45:39hard on that if you want to take the
1023. 45:40test and and I think was we were five or
1024. 45:43six months away from the test and then I
1025. 45:45came home and I was feeling sad and
1026. 45:46depressed for about three days and then
1027. 45:48I recovered from my sadness and my
1028. 45:50depression I said all right so I need to
  1029. 45:52focus on the consecutive
1030. 45:54that's because the rest of the other
1031. 45:57tech techniques you know like sight
1032. 46:01translation from English to Spanish
1033. 46:03Spanish to English and also the
1034. 46:05simultaneous I was doing pretty good on
1035. 46:07those you know in those areas but the
1036. 46:09consecutive technique was really bad for
  1037. 46:12me really really bad and I practiced a
1038. 46:15lot to the point that when we were I
1039. 46:18think we were two or three months away
1040. 46:20from the test we took another mock exam
  1041. 46:23and mr. Wagner I remember that I had a
1042. 46:25panic attack during that examination in
1043. 46:28the middle of the exam I I came down
1044. 46:30came down with an anxiety attack and
1045. 46:32then I began running out of like oxygen
1046. 46:35and I told mr. Wagner we need to stop
  1047. 46:37right now and I
1048. 46:38to walk out of the building because I'm
1049. 46:39feeling sick and he said why I said
  1050. 46:42because I think I'm doing really bad he
1051. 46:44said no he said he already doesn't if
1052. 46:46this was the actual test you know you
1053. 46:48would have already passed so you were
1054. 46:50doing great and I was like oh my gosh
1055. 46:52you know it took me about three months I
1056. 46:55would say you know to really improve my
1057. 46:57consecutive technique so that can give
1058. 47:00you a lot of hope because I was bad with
1059. 47:02the consecutive to the point that mr.
1060. 47:05Wagner didn't even bother to give him my
1061. 47:07result so three months later four months
  1062. 47:10later I was doing fantastic
  1063. 47:13persistent and discipline outstanding
1064. 47:16congratulations thank you thank you and
1065. 47:19also about the job my worst experience
1066. 47:22on the job um let me think
1067. 47:27let's see I've never had any any bad
1068. 47:32experience as an interpreter to be
  1069. 47:34honest with you guys I've always
1070. 47:36received compliments from the attorneys
1071. 47:38one day I was um and I have to speak the
1072. 47:43truth one day I was one of the attorneys
1073. 47:47got upset with me this was in the city
1074. 47:50of Newport Beach because I was using my
1075. 47:54I don't remember if I was using my my
1076. 47:56cell phone or my tablet I was checking
1077. 47:59something when my interpretation was
  1078. 48:01great it's just that I wasn't looking at
  1079. 48:04the attorneys face I you know I was
  1080. 48:06looking down because I was doing
1081. 48:08something with my cell phone and he
1082. 48:10didn't like that and he called me into
1083. 48:13his office when we finished we walked
1084. 48:15out of the conference room and he told
  1085. 48:17me he's like I don't want you to be
1086. 48:18doing this he said I do not want you to
1087. 48:20be using your cell phone or your tablet
1088. 48:21when you're doing working in my office
  1089. 48:25doing my depositions and I totally
  1090. 48:27understood and I said I am so sorry I
1091. 48:30said I will never do it again and he
  1092. 48:31even told me he said you're a great
1093. 48:33interpreter he gave me a compliment he
  1094. 48:35said you're a great interpreter I just
1095. 48:37don't like you doing this I said I'm so
  1096. 48:40sorry
1097. 48:40and yeah he corrected me I think I would
1098. 48:45say that it's not really bad I mean it
1099. 48:47was embarrassing but you know now that I
  1100. 48:50have a lot
  1101. 48:51experience and I'm like absolutely he
1102. 48:53was right but he didn't correct my it
1103. 48:55was not about me as an interpreters just
  1104. 48:58that I was doing something that I wasn't
  1105. 48:59supposed to do but I don't recall it
1106. 49:02this time anything when attorney argued
1107. 49:05with you but in your translation oh yeah
1108. 49:08my dad it just rings me up something
1109. 49:10that actually helps me with the law
1110. 49:13offices and the attorneys yes I have to
1111. 49:17relate something to you about I think it
1112. 49:20was in 2019 about six seven months ago
  1113. 49:24eight months ago I had a deposition in
1114. 49:27the city of I think it was the city of
1115. 49:31Orange so to make a long story short I
1116. 49:33walked into the conference room they
1117. 49:36because we always have defense attorney
1118. 49:38defenses they want to be there is
  1119. 49:40defending the and what it is a worker's
1120. 49:43comp case the defense attorney is the
1121. 49:45one that is defending the company in
1122. 49:47this case let's say one word right and
1123. 49:50the applicant attorney is the one that
1124. 49:52defends the employee the one who's suing
1125. 49:54the company so the applicant attorney
1126. 49:56was not a friendly person okay so I was
1127. 49:59doing my interpretation and then I said
1128. 50:02a defense attorney asked a question to
  1129. 50:06the applicant I gave my interpretation
1130. 50:08and the applicant attorney was not a
  1131. 50:11nice person but now he's almost like I
  1132. 50:13can say we're friends that was a very
1133. 50:15first time we worked together he
1134. 50:17objected in a very nasty way to my
1135. 50:20interpretation he said I have to correct
1136. 50:24in her birth that's not the right you
1137. 50:26know translation for this specific word
  1138. 50:30and to be honest with you I don't
1139. 50:31remember the word but I do remember that
1140. 50:33I said to the attorney okay I never
1141. 50:35argue with the attorneys I said okay
  1142. 50:37counsel I said I said well as far as I
  1143. 50:40know that's the correct interpretation
1144. 50:41for this translation for this work and
1145. 50:44he said no that isn't correct but he was
1146. 50:47being rude and then I said okay I said
1147. 50:51we'll tell me why and then he said
  1148. 50:54because I was raised Adam I Hispanic you
1149. 50:58know household in my parents didn't use
1150. 51:01that word for that you know for this
  1151. 51:03English word you know
1152. 51:05know that this is not the right
  1153. 51:06interpretation and then I said well
1154. 51:08cancel with all due respect you know I'm
  1155. 51:10a certified court interpreter I don't
1156. 51:12know if your parents went to college you
1157. 51:14know or what this case University in
1158. 51:16Mexico if they are from Mexico I said
1159. 51:18but I went to school in Mexico I went to
1160. 51:22school in the United States you know I
  1161. 51:24became a certified court interpreter
1162. 51:26here and that is the I've always known
1163. 51:27that that's the only word for this you
1164. 51:30know English word you know that's the
1165. 51:32only translation that I can use but if
1166. 51:33you know any other then I'm going to say
1167. 51:35on the record that based on your
1168. 51:37knowledge you know because later on if
1169. 51:40somebody says well the interpreter was
1170. 51:42incorrect I want them to know that this
1171. 51:44was your idea this was your
1172. 51:45interpretation of the word not mine and
1173. 51:48he was very upset and he was he was rude
1174. 51:51to me I we both ignored him me and the
1175. 51:55defense attorney and then a month later
  1176. 51:58we worked together again
  1177. 52:01and and then I made a comment actually
  1178. 52:04which I should have never done and I
1179. 52:06made a comment about how nasty he was
1180. 52:09with me the previous work together and
1181. 52:11he overheard my comments he was standing
1182. 52:14right behind me and I did not see the
1183. 52:15attorney standing right here I mean he
1184. 52:17said I've heard what you just said and
  1185. 52:20I'm a man I had to you know I had to
1186. 52:23tell him well counsel I'm sorry but
1187. 52:25that's where you I'm speaking the truth
1188. 52:27because I was relating to the court
1189. 52:29reporter how nasty he was with me you
1190. 52:31know the previous months we worked
1191. 52:33together and then he said I heard what
1192. 52:35you just said and I said well I'm sorry
  1193. 52:36but I'm speaking the truth and I was
1194. 52:39looking into his eyes and I thought he
1195. 52:41was gonna turn out to be like like he
1196. 52:43was gonna make it into a fight or
1197. 52:45something no he was actually very pretty
1198. 52:47very very friendly and you know now
1199. 52:50we've worked in peace with each other so
1200. 52:52I can tell you that that's the worst
1201. 52:53experience I've ever had but you have to
1202. 52:57go from the terminology that you've been
1203. 53:00taught and that it's already accepted in
1204. 53:03the courts correct absolutely now one
1205. 53:06thing I can tell you is that when you're
  1206. 53:09in court don't be afraid of judges I
1207. 53:11know in the past I would always hear
1208. 53:13people saying oh if we work with it you
1209. 53:15know the judge the judge will never even
  1210. 53:18if you
1211. 53:19make a mistake the judge will never
1212. 53:21scream or yell or humiliate you in front
1213. 53:24of the jury or in front of everyone he
1214. 53:26will never do that and this is even
1215. 53:28better for you guys know that if an
  1216. 53:31attorney challenges your interpretation
1217. 53:34in court the judge always tells the
1218. 53:37attorney counsel on your certified court
1219. 53:39interpreter no your honor I'm not but my
1220. 53:42mom and my dad raised me speaking
1221. 53:44Spanish so it doesn't matter to me
1222. 53:45the experts and now if you have an
1223. 53:48objection you have to wait until we
1224. 53:50finish today so the judge will never put
1225. 53:53you on the spot that I can tell you I've
1226. 53:55done many many legal cases in the Los
  1227. 53:58Angeles area I've done criminal cases
1228. 54:01I mean cases that are very very you know
1229. 54:03serious cases and one attorney one day
1230. 54:07he objected to my interpretation in
1231. 54:09front of the judge we were in front of
1232. 54:11the jury this was a criminal case and I
1233. 54:13was like oh in my head I was like oh my
1234. 54:15god this is gonna be bad and the judge
1235. 54:18said to the attorney counsel are you a
1236. 54:20certified court interpreter no your
1237. 54:22honor and he was gonna give his
1238. 54:24explanation he said then be quiet and
1239. 54:25let interpret to continue with his job
1240. 54:27if you have something saying wait until
1241. 54:29we finish yes and when I and I remember
1242. 54:34another occasion when I was at the
  1243. 54:36Appeals Board
1244. 54:37appeals for this where they handle the
1245. 54:39workers compensation cases in Santa Ana
  1246. 54:41an attorney was upset because um I don't
1247. 54:46know I did something and if she wanted
1248. 54:49but she was frustrated with the defense
1249. 54:51attorney and she wanted to take it out
1250. 54:53of me and she wanted to criticize me and
1251. 54:55I do remember that the judge see that
1252. 54:57attorney into the chambers and she was
1253. 55:00yelling at the attorney because she
1254. 55:03wanted to take her frustration out of me
1255. 55:05and when the attorney came out she was
1256. 55:08all nice and friendly with me very nice
1257. 55:10and very friendly yeah I'm so sorry
1258. 55:13always be on your side unless you do
  1259. 55:15something really bad or you're
  1260. 55:17unprofessional
  1261. 55:18or you're saying something completely
1262. 55:20out of place that's when probably the
1263. 55:22judge will tell you something but I've
  1264. 55:24never asked an interpreter I've never
1265. 55:25had any bad experiences with the judges
1266. 55:28themselves ever those are great stories
  1267. 55:31thank you
1268. 55:33oh you're welcome what else right up
1269. 55:38right below Ingrid Maria Lucia know when
1270. 55:41a depo is cancelled without any
1271. 55:44notification what exactly do we charge
1272. 55:46you charge exactly the same as if you
1273. 55:49had done the deposition remember I told
1274. 55:52you guys before we apply the 24-hour
1275. 55:55cancellation fee if somebody called me
  1276. 55:58today let's say 3:00 p.m. for a
1277. 56:01deposition for tomorrow and they hired
  1278. 56:03me for a half-day or full-day either one
  1279. 56:07let's say a half-day tomorrow at 10:00
  1280. 56:09a.m. they cancelled today at 6 o'clock
1281. 56:13or five o'clock you charge for the
  1282. 56:16deposition because we applied a 24-hour
  1283. 56:18cancellation fee so you we're gonna
1284. 56:20charge one hundred and seventy five
1285. 56:22dollars for you know for the depo you
1286. 56:25charge those ones 175 and this is how
1287. 56:29you make really good money you know like
1288. 56:31and I do this a lot that if they cancel
1289. 56:33then you take work from another agency
1290. 56:36you go and you cover that as how many we
1291. 56:38charge without that other depo so you
1292. 56:40charge for your late cancellation and
1293. 56:43you also charge for the Deaf for that
  1294. 56:45you charge
1295. 56:45I mean you cover it in the morning
1296. 56:47obviously because you you know the first
1297. 56:49one was cancelled and then you do your
  1298. 56:522:00 p.m. deposition as well so it's
  1299. 56:55like doing three demos
1300. 56:56you're charging for three dapples where
1301. 56:58you're only doing two because one of
  1302. 56:59them was a late cancellation so you're
  1303. 57:01always charged
1304. 57:02same thing if they if they hire you for
1305. 57:04a full day they tell you hey I have a
1306. 57:06full day tomorrow in court how much do
1307. 57:09you charge what all three hundred and
1308. 57:10fifty dollars plus part and piece plus
1309. 57:13mileage obviously in Vista in this case
  1310. 57:16if it is a late cancellation you're not
1311. 57:18charging for mileage and parking fees
  1312. 57:20because you're not driving to the
  1313. 57:22deposition you're not getting to the
  1314. 57:24parking lots okay you're only charging
1315. 57:26for your fee your interpreting fees so
1316. 57:29they if they hire you for a full day you
1317. 57:31charge for a three no three hundred and
1318. 57:33fifty dollars four hundred dollars
1319. 57:34whatever your fees may be for a full day
1320. 57:37and you have the you know the beauty is
1321. 57:40that you can you have the advantage of
1322. 57:41taking work from other agencies that
1323. 57:44will cover that full day so if you watch
  1324. 57:46if you
1325. 57:46we're hired for a full day you charge
  1326. 57:48your 300 400 350 or $400
1327. 57:52you still get one or two devils and you
1328. 57:54charge for those because you know you
1329. 57:55had a late cancellation okay thank you
1330. 57:59thank you for answering that also there
1331. 58:02another student is saying after you get
1332. 58:04certified how long after until you
1333. 58:06actually start working and making good
1334. 58:08money after you get certified in it
1335. 58:13depends on how much I mean you have to
1336. 58:16be proactive and you have to usually
1337. 58:19they just is no because your name will
1338. 58:22be listed on the master list so the
  1339. 58:25agencies when they're desperate they go
1340. 58:27on to the master list and they start
  1341. 58:28looking for the interpreters we've
1342. 58:29covered that the area where they have
1343. 58:31the deposition or the case whatever you
1344. 58:33know the in the legal case but you have
1345. 58:35to call agencies and you have to tell
  1346. 58:37them hey you know I'm a certified court
1347. 58:39interpreter let me know if you have work
1348. 58:41for me in my case form you start getting
1349. 58:45all the work that I want it to get you
1350. 58:48know like like you know working two
1351. 58:50hours I mean two thousand two up two or
1352. 58:52three assignments a day every single day
  1353. 58:54I think it's it's about two to three
1354. 58:56months from you start getting a lot of
1355. 58:58work like a lot of work but agencies
1356. 59:02were calling me a little bit you know
1357. 59:04not so much the first for three months
1358. 59:06but you have to call them you have to
1359. 59:08you know you have to promote your
1360. 59:10business because you are your own
1361. 59:12business and you have to tell them hey
  1362. 59:14I'm a certified court interpreter and
1363. 59:16I'm letting you know if you have
1364. 59:17something from me and they will oh
1365. 59:19absolutely they will start calling you
1366. 59:21and you will have a lot of work so if
1367. 59:23you don't get enough work the first few
1368. 59:26weeks or the first few months I'm gonna
1369. 59:28tell you where my father told me enjoy
1370. 59:30your time know once they know who you
  1371. 59:34are and they you've proved to be a
1372. 59:37reliable interpreter they will be
1373. 59:40calling you like crazy you like honestly
1374. 59:43like you're gonna have a lot of work to
1375. 59:45the point that you're gonna cry out of
  1376. 59:47frustration and you'll be making really
1377. 59:49good money awesome thank you also
1378. 59:53another question from Maria Lujan Oh
1379. 59:55student says asking what is the process
  1380. 59:59to become a federal
  1381. 1:00:00or interpreter um that's a different
1382. 1:00:02course you have to take you have to go
1383. 1:00:06to school and you know all over again
1384. 1:00:08and just like we like what you're doing
1385. 1:00:12right now you know you take certain
1386. 1:00:13classes you take certain courses and
1387. 1:00:16then you take the written exam mmm you
1388. 1:00:21know for a federal interpreting and then
1389. 1:00:24once you pass a written exam then that
1390. 1:00:27gives you the green light for the for
  1391. 1:00:29the oral examinations so it's pretty
1392. 1:00:31much the same the same process as us
1393. 1:00:34when you want to get certified for yes
1394. 1:00:38and we will be students we will be
1395. 1:00:39covering the requirements for the
1396. 1:00:41federal court interpreter and our legal
1397. 1:00:43modules coming up in about two weeks I
  1398. 1:00:46have a question actually I have two
1399. 1:00:49questions yes I mentioned to them just
  1400. 1:00:53before I forget I just want to mention
  1401. 1:00:55something real quick federal is it's
1402. 1:01:00good okay I'm not gonna tell you oh
1403. 1:01:02don't go for it don't go for it because
1404. 1:01:04the more knowledge you have in this life
1405. 1:01:06the better I just want to tell you
  1406. 1:01:08something and I'm speaking realistically
1407. 1:01:10okay as a federal interpreter you can
1408. 1:01:14charge more money however in this area
1409. 1:01:19where we live here here in Southern
1410. 1:01:21California Orange County LA County there
1411. 1:01:25is very little federal work most ninety
1412. 1:01:28ninety percent of the work we have as
1413. 1:01:31interpreters is with the state so I'll
1414. 1:01:34give you an example let's say you are
  1415. 1:01:35its federal interpret I must state
1416. 1:01:38interpreter okay your certification is
1417. 1:01:41higher than mine but agency is in this
1418. 1:01:45area 99 percent of the agencies are
1419. 1:01:48looking for stay at a state interpreter
  1420. 1:01:50not a federal interpreter so obviously
1421. 1:01:53since you went school longer than me you
1422. 1:01:55studied harder than me you when an
1423. 1:01:57agency calls you you will tell them well
  1424. 1:01:59you know what I'm a federal interpreter
  1425. 1:02:01so for a deposition I'm going to charge
  1426. 1:02:02you three hundred dollars for a half-day
1427. 1:02:04all right however Almar which is this
1428. 1:02:08case me I'll tell them you know what I'm
  1429. 1:02:10stating trafford so I'll charge you $200
1430. 1:02:13for one hundred and eighty dollars for a
1431. 1:02:14they now you are at a disadvantage
1432. 1:02:17compared to everybody else because as an
1433. 1:02:20agency DODOcase if Omar is a reliable
1434. 1:02:23interpreter you know and he works nicely
1435. 1:02:27he charges a lot less than the federal
  1436. 1:02:30interpreter why would I get a federal
1437. 1:02:32and proper for this workers compensation
1438. 1:02:35case now this is only here in Southern
1439. 1:02:38California but if you go to places like
1440. 1:02:40New York City Washington DC Boston in
  1441. 1:02:44Massachusetts then you're going to get a
1442. 1:02:47lot more federal work over there but in
1443. 1:02:49this area I can tell you that if you are
  1444. 1:02:52a federal interpreter you're not really
1445. 1:02:55gonna be making a lot of money out of it
1446. 1:02:58because you will always have to lower
1447. 1:03:00your rates to the level of other
1448. 1:03:03interpreters or state certified so you
1449. 1:03:05can be you know like so you can have
1450. 1:03:09work so you can make money because if
  1451. 1:03:11you charge your federal rates they're
1452. 1:03:13gonna be using only for federal cases
1453. 1:03:16and and you you probably won't be
1454. 1:03:18getting a lot of work also not that you
1455. 1:03:23mentioned the competitiveness of the
1456. 1:03:25business I know more and more the
1457. 1:03:28judicial council has been looking at
1458. 1:03:30ways to recruit more people I know
  1459. 1:03:33there's still a shortage in California
1460. 1:03:35last year they did a pilot program with
1461. 1:03:38three courts one in Sacramento I believe
1462. 1:03:41that one was in Ventura trying to see
1463. 1:03:43how they could use Spanish certified
1464. 1:03:46trans interpreters to work over the
1465. 1:03:49phone via remotely so why do you think
1466. 1:03:52or what what can the Judicial Council do
1467. 1:03:55why is there such a big shortage of
1468. 1:03:57certify interpreters um well a lot of
1469. 1:04:04people are struggling to get certified
1470. 1:04:07um I think that perhaps something that
1471. 1:04:12I've always noticed every ever since I
1472. 1:04:15came to the United States and I'll be
1473. 1:04:17you know honest with you guys many
  1474. 1:04:19people I feel that they don't want to
1475. 1:04:22use their bilingual skills because they
1476. 1:04:24think that Oh a lot of people do not
1477. 1:04:26know how much money they can make
1478. 1:04:28they buy their bilingual skills so there
1479. 1:04:31is a lot of work in the legal system a
1480. 1:04:34lot of work so but there we don't have
  1481. 1:04:37enough intercourse so number one it's
1482. 1:04:41not that easy to get certified I'm not
1483. 1:04:43saying that is impossible for you have
1484. 1:04:46really like you have to dedicate
1485. 1:04:47yourself you know in on the other side
1486. 1:04:50we have so many cases compared to how
1487. 1:04:54many interpreters we have interpreters
1488. 1:04:57were certified so what I can tell you is
1489. 1:05:01that there is a lot more work than we
  1490. 1:05:04can handle a lot more I know the
1491. 1:05:08requirement one of the requirements once
1492. 1:05:10you do get certified by the Judicial
1493. 1:05:12Council is to continue with professional
1494. 1:05:14development what do you do how do you
1495. 1:05:17keep up with that like do you take
1496. 1:05:19anything online or how what what what is
1497. 1:05:22that requirement and how do you handle
1498. 1:05:24that yes that is also a good question
1499. 1:05:26million once you get your certification
1500. 1:05:29you have to do the continuing continuing
1501. 1:05:33education and you have to every two
1502. 1:05:37years you have to renew your license
1503. 1:05:39okay so for instance in my case right
1504. 1:05:43now I have to renew my license by
  1505. 1:05:45December 31st 2020 which is by the end
1506. 1:05:48of this year so you have to gather
1507. 1:05:51according to the Judicial Council you
1508. 1:05:53have to gather 40 legal cases that you
1509. 1:05:56have to do during those two years
1510. 1:05:57because you have to renew your license
1511. 1:06:00every every two years so obviously I
1512. 1:06:02sign in for certified court interpreter
1513. 1:06:04you're gonna be making a lot more cases
1514. 1:06:06than you know a lot more than 40 cases
  1515. 1:06:08in two years perhaps we'll be making 40
1516. 1:06:12per month so that you know in that case
1517. 1:06:16you won't have any problems and you have
1518. 1:06:20to list the names of those cases you
1519. 1:06:22have to list the number the adj number
1520. 1:06:25where they call the a DJ number and the
1521. 1:06:27name of the law office or the name of
  1522. 1:06:29the deponents
1523. 1:06:30so you you know you make your list and
1524. 1:06:33also you have to gather certainly units
1525. 1:06:36the units is when you go to when you
1526. 1:06:38take courses when you take seminars I
  1527. 1:06:41think
  1528. 1:06:42it's about a 35 to 40 units and I think
1529. 1:06:44they give you it's one unit per hour or
1530. 1:06:48something like that so what I do is that
  1531. 1:06:50usually I go to a three-day seminar
  1532. 1:06:53Friday Saturday and Sunday it's like I
1533. 1:06:56don't know like 89 hours a day and that
1534. 1:07:00gives me pretty much all of the units I
  1535. 1:07:03need it's something like that I have to
1536. 1:07:05count exactly because sometimes you go
1537. 1:07:07to a seminar that lasts six hours and
1538. 1:07:09they give you like four units then you
1539. 1:07:12have to go to another one that lasts
1540. 1:07:13five hours and they give you like six
1541. 1:07:15units or 3 units and that's how you can
1542. 1:07:18do it little by little in my case I just
1543. 1:07:20prefer to go you know three full days
1544. 1:07:23you know in and then I gather all of my
1545. 1:07:26units so you gather your units by going
1546. 1:07:28to a seminar you have to pay for the
  1547. 1:07:30seminar it's not for free but you're
1548. 1:07:32gonna be making plenty of money to pay
  1549. 1:07:34for it so I think it's like I don't know
1550. 1:07:37when I pay for my seminars like two or
1551. 1:07:41three hundred dollars something like
1552. 1:07:42that three hundred and fifty dollars I
1553. 1:07:45don't even remember but it's you know
1554. 1:07:48it's a couple hundred dollars that you
1555. 1:07:49pay for the seminar and and also you
1556. 1:07:52have to pay a $100 fee to renew your
  1557. 1:07:55license so you're gonna be spending I
1558. 1:07:58don't know five six hundred dollars to
1559. 1:08:00renew your license every every every two
1560. 1:08:04years now the continuing education units
1561. 1:08:07do they have to be within a particular
1562. 1:08:09field oh you can pick and choose well
1563. 1:08:12there are actually there are
1564. 1:08:15interpreters and agencies and companies
1565. 1:08:17that specialize in giving those seminars
1566. 1:08:21and they're always in regards to legal
1567. 1:08:23terms okay sometimes idioms slings legal
  1568. 1:08:30terminology things like that it's within
1569. 1:08:34your same industry same topic absolutely
1570. 1:08:37yes they give you names of drugs and
1571. 1:08:40names of weapons and things like that
1572. 1:08:42because you used those in courts when
1573. 1:08:45you're doing criminal cases you use
1574. 1:08:47those you know things related to drugs
1575. 1:08:51and weapons and things like like the
  1576. 1:08:53cartel and stuff
1577. 1:08:55I think I'm going to do two more to
1578. 1:08:59three more questions from students and
1579. 1:09:01then we'll wrap it up someone just said
1580. 1:09:05mentioned that this is off topic but
1581. 1:09:07since your last name is Brady he wants
  1582. 1:09:11to know if you're a Patriots fan no
1583. 1:09:16actually I'm not my dad my adopted dad
1584. 1:09:20he's eyes I miss Brady and he's not even
1585. 1:09:22into sports so no I'm sorry guys
1586. 1:09:28anyways regarding the school that you
  1587. 1:09:31went to we know that that's a private
1588. 1:09:33school because of the little passing
1589. 1:09:36raid they can guarantee that you will
1590. 1:09:38pass the exam I know someone is asking I
1591. 1:09:41had other students that where went to
1592. 1:09:43the Santa Fe and now they're coming back
1593. 1:09:44after they did not pass so I don't know
1594. 1:09:47if that answers your question fitted
  1595. 1:09:49because she say no how much that's a
1596. 1:09:51school you went in Santa Fe how much
1597. 1:09:53does it cost to attend and did they do
1598. 1:09:55they guarantee you will pass the court
1599. 1:09:56exam well there is no guarantee actually
1600. 1:10:00guys I mean you can go to any school you
1601. 1:10:03can go to Santa Ana College or UCLA
  1602. 1:10:06because I know UCLA also offers
1603. 1:10:08interpreting program or you can go to
1604. 1:10:10Santa Fe Springs there is no guarantee
1605. 1:10:12it depends on how much you apply
1606. 1:10:15yourself you know it all depends on you
1607. 1:10:20for instance in my case I only went to
1608. 1:10:23school with in Santa Fe Springs with mr.
1609. 1:10:26Wagner only for about a year and a half
1610. 1:10:28or so it was not more than two years it
  1611. 1:10:31was about a year and a half and and I
1612. 1:10:36remember that many of my classmates had
1613. 1:10:39been attending school for three years
1614. 1:10:40four years two and a half years five
  1615. 1:10:43years I had a I had a classmate who
  1616. 1:10:46actually took the oral examination 15
  1617. 1:10:50times 15 times but I mean you know it's
1618. 1:10:58all you know and in most of those
1619. 1:11:01students you know had been in the in
1620. 1:11:03this country probably longer than me so
1621. 1:11:06it depends on how badly you want to
1622. 1:11:09achieve something so yeah that I can
1623. 1:11:11tell you that it doesn't have to do with
1624. 1:11:13this it has nothing to do with the
1625. 1:11:15school probably it has to or your age or
1626. 1:11:20whatever you know it has to do with your
1627. 1:11:23you know if you if you have a plan you
1628. 1:11:27know in terms of you know how much you
1629. 1:11:29want to prepare for your test and how
1630. 1:11:32badly you want to pass your test then
1631. 1:11:33you'll be able to do it absolutely and
  1632. 1:11:36just because you've been at ten you've
1633. 1:11:39been attending school for three years
1634. 1:11:40doesn't mean you're gonna pass or just
  1635. 1:11:42because you've been attending school for
  1636. 1:11:44one year doesn't mean you're not going
1637. 1:11:45too fast it's it's all about you it all
1638. 1:11:48depends on on your intelligence and your
  1639. 1:11:50dedication and your efforts well you're
  1640. 1:11:53definitely a great inspiration in a role
1641. 1:11:55model we appreciate everything that you
1642. 1:11:58share with the students someone is
1643. 1:12:01asking if you're working on your own as
1644. 1:12:03an interpreter your own business how
1645. 1:12:05would you do your taxes I guess this
1646. 1:12:07would be depending on I'm also business
  1647. 1:12:10consultant if you're doing it as a
  1648. 1:12:11freelancer would this be a 1099 or as a
1649. 1:12:16as an owner sole proprietorship it just
1650. 1:12:19depends yeah I have my own agency and my
1651. 1:12:26father isn't one who helps me with all
1652. 1:12:28the he and the tax lady there they wants
1653. 1:12:30to take care of the taxes but as far as
1654. 1:12:32I know I have to take taxes every four
1655. 1:12:35months when humans are quarterly because
1656. 1:12:39when you make certain amount of money
1657. 1:12:40you can't wait until the end of the year
1658. 1:12:42you know the federal government wants
1659. 1:12:45you to file your taxes every four months
  1660. 1:12:47so that's how that's how we do that's
  1661. 1:12:50how I do my taxes under a 1099 and and
1662. 1:12:54it's every four months that I have to
1663. 1:12:55pay for my taxes well um I thank you
1664. 1:13:00again Omar I don't know if you like to
1665. 1:13:02have any closing comments I think we
1666. 1:13:05took care pretty much of all the
1667. 1:13:06questions there students are saying
1668. 1:13:08thank you they feel very honor thank you
1669. 1:13:10so much for having you up above when you
1670. 1:13:13started and thank you thank you for all
1671. 1:13:16the information so I know some of them
  1672. 1:13:20already
  1673. 1:13:21we're present in Europe
1674. 1:13:23his presentation and they were very
1675. 1:13:24excited to see you come back we know you
1676. 1:13:26always have something different to share
  1677. 1:13:29definitely you're a great model and an
  1678. 1:13:31inspiration
  1679. 1:13:32are there any closing anything you'd
1680. 1:13:34like to say you know just that um
1681. 1:13:36continue with this career guys I know
1682. 1:13:42you know like I said at the beginning
1683. 1:13:44times are difficult right now but you
1684. 1:13:49know it's easy to get discouraged this
  1685. 1:13:52is a beautiful beautiful career and it's
1686. 1:13:55not going to fall apart because of the
  1687. 1:13:58coronavirus or because I mean people
1688. 1:14:00would have to really like millions of us
1689. 1:14:02would have to die in order for you know
1690. 1:14:04to say oh there is no work and that's
  1691. 1:14:06not gonna happen I mean that's going to
1692. 1:14:07the extremes but there is there is work
1693. 1:14:12okay so I'm telling you you know I have
1694. 1:14:16not been what I've been sitting at my
1695. 1:14:18house because I work from home now but
  1696. 1:14:20um I've been busy working I've been busy
1697. 1:14:23making money translating documents doing
1698. 1:14:26depositions you know things like that so
1699. 1:14:31please you know continue going with your
1700. 1:14:34studies do not give up this is worth it
1701. 1:14:37it really really is I know it's not easy
1702. 1:14:40right now and perhaps it has never been
1703. 1:14:44easy for you guys but one thing I can
1704. 1:14:47tell you once you get licensed you are
1705. 1:14:50going to it's going to transform your
1706. 1:14:53life it's not just going to change your
1707. 1:14:55life but it's going to transform your
1708. 1:14:57life okay whether you want to work as an
1709. 1:15:00employee you know saying okay I just you
1710. 1:15:02know I want to make sure that I you know
  1711. 1:15:04have $80,000 as an income or 85,000 and
1712. 1:15:08whatever you know they pay or saying oh
1713. 1:15:10I want to make a lot more money than
  1714. 1:15:12that whatever you're gonna have a lot of
1715. 1:15:15work that I can tell you so don't give
1716. 1:15:17up continue with your with your studies
1717. 1:15:19I continue going to school taking your
1718. 1:15:22classes online right now because of the

1721. 1:15:30excuse me for interpreters there is a
1722. 1:15:33great need for interpreters and I know
1723. 1:15:35that when you go get
1724. 1:15:36regular job usually those jobs when you

1728. 1:15:45their bilingual skills as well and
