4. 0:09Christmas it's no
5. 0:12coincidence after the joy of Christ's
6. 0:14birth we're invited to reflect on Family
7. 0:19Life its
8. 0:21beauty its struggles and its sacred
9. 0:26purpose I want to begin with the story
10. 0:28about Mary and
11. 0:30Anderson one of the greatest contralto
12. 0:34singers of all
13. 0:36time born in Philadelphia Maran Rose to
14. 0:39worldwide
15. 0:41Acclaim her talent and Grace breaking
16. 0:44barriers during a time of racial
17. 0:48divide in 1939 she was denied permission
18. 0:51to sing at Washington's constitutional
19. 0:54hall because of the color of her skin
20. 1:00but undeterred she performed on the
21. 1:02steps of the Lincoln Memorial that
22. 1:04Easter Sunday drawing a crowd of about
23. 1:0775,000
24. 1:09people Marian's career was filled with
25. 1:12extraordinary Milestones singing for
26. 1:16people like President Roosevelt and the
27. 1:18king and queen of
28. 1:19England receiving praise from the
29. 1:22legendary conductor toscani who called
30. 1:24her voice the finest voice of the
31. 1:28century yet when a reporter once asked
32. 1:31her to name the greatest moment of her
33. 1:35life her answer wasn't about any of
34. 1:37these public
35. 1:40triumphs she said her greatest moment
36. 1:43was the day that when she went home and
37. 1:46told her mother you don't have to work
38. 1:49so hard anymore doing other people's
39. 1:51laundry I can afford to take care of
40. 1:54both of us
41. 1:57now this story reminds us of a profound
42. 2:01truth true greatness isn't found in
43. 2:04Applause or public
44. 2:07recognition it's found in the quiet and
45. 2:10the Selfless Love We Share within our
46. 2:15families and isn't that what the Feast
47. 2:17of the Holy Family calls us to reflect
48. 2:21on let's be honest Christmas isn't
49. 2:24always
50. 2:26easy for some families the holiday felt
51. 2:29more More Like Mine Fields than a
52. 2:33celebration navigating relationships
53. 2:35while trying not to set off Old
54. 2:38Wounds for others the season was
55. 2:41overshadowed by
56. 2:42loss an empty chair at the
57. 2:46table and many are carrying heavy
58. 2:49burdens wrestling with decisions and
59. 2:52striving to do the right thing in the
60. 2:54face of
61. 2:57uncertainty if this was your experience
62. 3:00this year I want you to take
63. 3:02heart the Holy Family understands your
64. 3:07struggles it's easy to imagine that life
65. 3:09was simple for Jesus Mary and Joseph
66. 3:12they had the Son of God in their midst
67. 3:14after
68. 3:15all but scripture tells us a different
69. 3:20story from the moment of Christ's birth
70. 3:22their lives were marked by
71. 3:25hardship they were rejected at the end
72. 3:30forced to deliver Jesus in a smelly
73. 3:34stable shortly after his birth they fled
74. 3:36to Egypt to escape herod's wrath
75. 3:39becoming refugees unknown of their
76. 3:42future and how they would provide for
77. 3:44each
78. 3:45other refugees in a foreign land and
79. 3:49today's Gospel recounts another moment
80. 3:51of
81. 3:52turmoil losing the Child Jesus for an
82. 3:55agonizing three
83. 3:58days the holy family faced real
84. 4:02struggles but what made them holy was
85. 4:05not the absence of difficulty it was
86. 4:08their unwavering love for one another
87. 4:10and their trust in
88. 4:13God this was a consoling truth and
89. 4:16should be a consoling Truth for all of
90. 4:18us if your Christmas was tough know that
91. 4:21the holy family had many tough
92. 4:25Christmases and if your holiday was
93. 4:27joyful I want you to thank thank God in
94. 4:30a special way at this
95. 4:32Mass either way stay close to Jesus Mary
96. 4:36and Joseph they get
97. 4:38it and they can guide you through
98. 4:40whatever challenges you
99. 4:43face but here's an important
100. 4:47reminder having Jesus in your life
101. 4:49doesn't mean your problems
102. 4:52disappear it doesn't erase the
103. 4:55cross what it does is transform your
104. 5:01Journey with Christ even the heaviest
105. 5:03burdens can be carried with
106. 5:06joy because we know the cross is not the
107. 5:09end of the
108. 5:10story our journey leads to eternal
109. 5:15life some people say the holy family had
110. 5:17it easy because they were
111. 5:21Saints we're all called to sainthood
112. 5:24every single one of
113. 5:26us Holiness is not reserved for perfect
114. 5:30people it's a
115. 5:33choice Mary and Joseph didn't have their
116. 5:35lives handed to them they made daily
117. 5:39decisions to trust God to abide in God
118. 5:43to love one another and to live by the
119. 5:46faith they chose that every single
120. 5:49day and this brings us to the heart of
121. 5:52today's feast what does it mean to be a
122. 5:54holy
123. 5:57family St Paul gives us a beautiful
124. 5:59blueprint in his letter to the
125. 6:01Colossians what does St Paul tell them
126. 6:03he says it's kindness
127. 6:06humility compassion
128. 6:09gentleness patience and
129. 6:12forgiveness notice he doesn't say that
130. 6:15Holy families are free from frustrations
131. 6:18or
132. 6:19conflict he says they choose these
133. 6:23virtues again and again even in the face
134. 6:26of struggle
135. 6:30Holiness in family life is not about
136. 6:32perfection it's about
137. 6:35perseverance holy families care for one
138. 6:38another more than they care about
139. 6:41themselves they make
140. 6:43sacrifices they put others
141. 6:47first and root their lives in
142. 6:52Christ so how do we do this how do we
143. 6:56make our families holy
144. 6:59well I believe the answer lies in the
145. 7:02Eucharist the Holy Family wouldn't have
146. 7:05been holy without the real presence of
147. 7:07Jesus in their
148. 7:09lives and the same is true for
149. 7:11us when we receive Christ in the
150. 7:14Eucharist we invited him into our hearts
151. 7:16and into our homes we allow him to shape
152. 7:19our relationships to guide us to help us
153. 7:24with our decisions and to fill our
154. 7:26families with
155. 7:28love this is why coming to mass as a
156. 7:31family
157. 7:33matters it's why praying together daily
158. 7:36is
159. 7:37essential and it's why fighting against
160. 7:40sin is not just a personal battle it's a
161. 7:43responsibility you owe to your
162. 7:46family for those who are grieving
163. 7:49remember
164. 7:51this every time you receive the
165. 7:53Eucharist we are united with those who
166. 7:56have gone before us in
167. 7:58heaven if we believe that our departed
168. 8:01loved ones are with Christ then we are
169. 8:04connected to them in a very profound way
170. 8:06every time we approach the
171. 8:10altar even in times of Crisis a family
172. 8:13can be
173. 8:14holy Holiness doesn't mean everything is
174. 8:18perfect it means Christ is
175. 8:22present returning to Mari and Anderson's
176. 8:25story we see this truth lived out this
177. 8:29despite her Fame despite her greatest
178. 8:34accomplishments her greatest moment
179. 8:36wasn't on
180. 8:38stage or in an
181. 8:40Applause her greatest moment was in her
182. 8:43home with her
183. 8:45mother in the love that she shared with
184. 8:49her that was her greatest
185. 8:53moment so I leave you with this
186. 8:56challenge what is the one thing that you
187. 8:58can do to make your family
188. 9:02Holier what decisions can you make right
189. 9:05now today to forgo anger
190. 9:10frustrations
191. 9:14impatience what can you do today that
192. 9:18will bless your family as you journey
193. 9:21together every family in our parish is
194. 9:25part of a larger
195. 9:27family our Parish family our church and
196. 9:30ultimately the our all the family of God
197. 9:34we're called to journey
198. 9:36together to support each other to hold
199. 9:40each other accountable as we strive to
200. 9:43become holy
201. 9:46families so my brothers and sisters this
202. 9:48weekend we're invited to look to Jesus
203. 9:51Mary and Joseph for guidance for
204. 9:54protection and
205. 9:56Grace May their example Inspire us to
206. 9:59Embrace Holiness on a daily basis to
207. 10:02choose
208. 10:05Holiness in ordinary
209. 10:08moments and may God's blessing be
210. 10:10abundant as we seek to live as families
211. 10:13United in his love amen
