  1. 0:00Tesla Premium Connectivity costs €9.99 per month, which comes to
  2. 0:05almost €120 a year. Personally, I use it and I'd find it hard to do without today.
  3. 0:10But while preparing this video,
  4. 0:11I realized that a large part of its features could
  5. 0:14be replaced for free with my phone: music, Netflix,
  6. 0:17YouTube, the web browser, sometimes even without manually turning on my mobile hotspot.
  7. 0:21So am I really paying €120 a year just because I can't be bothered
  8. 0:24to take out my phone? Not really, because there are features my
  9. 0:28phone can't replace and that, for me, really make a difference.
  10. 0:31There's another point to keep in mind: on recent vehicles,
  11. 0:34Standard Connectivity is only included for 8 years. Beyond that,
  12. 0:38Tesla is still fairly vague about what will remain available at no extra cost.
  13. 0:42So I'm going to show you what you really lose without Premium Connectivity, what you can
  14. 0:46get back for free, and above all which type of user really gets value from those €9.99.
  15. 0:51Without Premium Connectivity, you still keep the essentials: navigation,
  16. 0:55Trip Planner, Superchargers and traffic information along your route.
  17. 1:00What Premium adds is a more complete view of live traffic on the map,
  18. 1:04along with other features such as satellite view. It's clearly not essential
  19. 1:07to reach your destination, but it definitely makes the experience more pleasant and convenient.
  20. 1:11With Premium Connectivity, you really enrich the experience... and, incidentally, Tesla does too!
  21. 1:16But anyway, the subscription mainly gives me a more complete view
  22. 1:19of live traffic on the map, with the different red and orange sections.
  23. 1:22I also get satellite view, which looks a little nicer visually and,
  24. 1:25in my opinion, makes it easier to find your way around.
  25. 1:27It also gives you speed camera and hazard-zone alerts. It's not
  26. 1:30necessarily the most spectacular feature,
  27. 1:32but the little warning as you approach is pretty useful day to day.
  28. 1:35You also get various additional information,
  29. 1:38such as weather, precipitation and certain road alerts.
  30. 1:41And honestly, when I see the hailstorms we've been getting
  31. 1:44lately, I'm pretty happy to be able to see incoming bad weather at a glance.
  32. 1:48There's also one feature that has become
  33. 1:50quite important with recent updates: Grok.
  34. 1:52On my car today, I can use it
  35. 1:54to find a destination in a much more natural way.
  36. 1:57For example, I can ask it to find a bakery along my route and
  37. 1:59it will suggest a relevant place and add it directly to navigation.
  38. 2:03“I'd like to go to Troyes, but first I'd like you to set
  39. 2:06the temperature to 21.5°C and, on the way to Troyes,
  40. 2:09find me a bakery as close as possible to my current location.”
  41. 2:17“Temperature set to 21.5°C. I found several bakeries 200 meters away: Boulangerie
  42. 2:23Louise and Boulangerie Case à Pain Open Park. Which one do you want on the route to Troyes?”
  43. 2:28“Louise.”
  44. 2:33“Route updated: first Boulangerie Louise,
  45. 2:36then Troyes. You'll be at the bakery in 2 minutes.”
  46. 2:39With the latest update available on my version,
  47. 2:42it can also control certain vehicle functions, such as the climate system.
  48. 2:46Grok requires either Premium Connectivity or a Wi-Fi connection. So once again,
  49. 2:50a hotspot can technically replace Premium, but with the subscription,
  50. 2:53everything works automatically without you having to think about it.
  51. 2:55Clearly, these features aren't essential, but in everyday use,
  52. 2:58I still find them much more pleasant and convenient to have.
  53. 3:02There has also been an important change on the music side. Since late 2024, Spotify
  54. 3:06Premium is no longer included with Premium Connectivity for most vehicles.
  55. 3:10I used to be with Deezer, but since the app unfortunately
  56. 3:13isn't natively available in the Tesla, I eventually switched to Spotify.
  57. 3:17That lets me enjoy high-quality music,
  58. 3:19ad-free, controlled directly from the car's screen without having to use my phone.
  59. 3:24Today, in this area, Tesla mainly provides
  60. 3:26the internet connection that allows these integrated services to work,
  61. 3:29but the music service subscription itself is still your responsibility.
  62. 3:31And again, if you don't want to pay for Premium Connectivity,
  63. 3:34there's another option: simply connect your phone via Bluetooth.
  64. 3:37You also get Caraoke, which requires Premium Connectivity and,
  65. 3:40personally, it's definitely not what would make me pay for the subscription. But for
  66. 3:43passengers or if you have kids, it's still a fun little extra.
  67. 3:46As for the web browser, it's the same idea: without Premium Connectivity, you can still
  68. 3:50use it over Wi-Fi or your phone's mobile hotspot.
  69. 3:54And honestly, at a Supercharger, being able to check your emails and flight
  70. 3:57tickets or play a video directly on that huge screen is pretty convenient.
  71. 4:01And if you want to take the browser idea all the way, you can even
  72. 4:04order your new Tesla directly from the screen while getting 1,000
  73. 4:08km of free Supercharging by using my referral link, which you'll find in the description.
  74. 4:12Keep in mind that even without Premium Connectivity,
  75. 4:14you still retain a large part of the remote controls in the Tesla app.
  76. 4:18Personally, it's actually one of the features I use the most: turning on
  77. 4:21the heating or air conditioning before getting into the car,
  78. 4:23checking the cabin temperature and monitoring charging,
  79. 4:26locking or unlocking the car. And all of that remains available without Premium Connectivity.
  80. 4:30For Sentry Mode, however, Premium really does add something useful.
  81. 4:33Without the subscription, the car still keeps monitoring
  82. 4:35and recording events to the USB drive. But with Premium,
  83. 4:38I can also view the cameras live from the Tesla app.
  84. 4:42That's useful, for example, if you have a pet in the car. But
  85. 4:45you can also directly access videos recorded by the Dashcam
  86. 4:48or Sentry Mode, and even share them from your phone.
  87. 4:51And when combined with certain third-party apps that can send a notification when a
  88. 4:55Sentry event is detected, it becomes even more useful.
  89. 4:58I receive an alert and can immediately check what's happening, either live,
  90. 5:02or by viewing the available clips.
  91. 5:04And this, for me, is where we get to a real feature that
  92. 5:06a phone hotspot simply cannot replace.
  93. 5:08But if remote cameras don't interest you at all,
  94. 5:12then the free alternative will probably make more sense.
  95. 5:15However, you'll have to share your phone's connection with your Tesla
  96. 5:19to use all of these services.
  97. 5:21The principle is fairly simple: your smartphone shares its connection,
  98. 5:25the Tesla connects to it over Wi-Fi and you get internet access.
  99. 5:28You can also automate this process
  100. 5:30on both Android and iPhone.
  101. 5:33Unfortunately, this solution also has several drawbacks.
  102. 5:37Besides losing some of the features we've already discussed,
  103. 5:39the pairing can sometimes take a while to activate, and the connection can be
  104. 5:43less stable. You also need a mobile plan that can handle the data usage.
  105. 5:47In the end, you're not only paying for internet access; you're mainly paying
  106. 5:50for everything to work without ever having to think about it.
  107. 5:52There's also a third option that I think is pretty smart:
  108. 5:54only subscribing to Premium Connectivity occasionally.
  109. 5:58Since the subscription has no long-term commitment,
  110. 6:00some owners simply activate it for holidays or a big road trip.
  111. 6:03For one month, you get the visual traffic display,
  112. 6:05enhanced maps, integrated streaming and all the convenience of the subscription,
  113. 6:09without ever having to worry about your phone's hotspot.
  114. 6:12Then you cancel it.
  115. 6:13For some users, honestly, that's probably the best compromise.
  116. 6:17As for me, I'm going to keep using it, simply because I like satellite view,
  117. 6:22I want to be able to access the remote cameras at any time and, above all,
  118. 6:25because I don't want to have to take out my phone or check
  119. 6:29every time that the hotspot has connected properly.
  120. 6:31What I'm really looking for is that smooth, fully integrated experience.
  121. 6:34I get in the car, everything is available and I don't have to manage anything.
  122. 6:37That doesn't stop me from thinking it's a shame that some of these features aren't
  123. 6:40included by default at no extra cost, and I especially regret the removal of
  124. 6:44Spotify Premium, which in my opinion used to add real value to the subscription.
  125. 6:48And in the end, the real question may not be whether Premium Connectivity is worth
  126. 6:51€9.99 a month, but whether the features you actually use are worth that price.
  127. 6:56So tell me in the comments whether you're more of a Premium or hotspot user,
  128. 7:00and especially which feature keeps you paying, or on the contrary,
  129. 7:03which one you could easily do without.
  130. 7:05I'm really curious to know how you use your Teslas.
  131. 7:08In any case, if you found the video useful, please give it a like and subscribe.
  132. 7:12And I'll see you again very soon on ORIZON.
