  37. 1:41remarkable about the capture of the

  40. 1:47police announced this father of two

  42. 1:51prayed on parents children women the
  43. 1:53mystery only deepened who is he what

  76. 3:23terrorized the citizens of Witchita
  77. 3:25Kansas BTK seemed uncatchable everyone
  78. 3:30wondered who he was where he was when a
  79. 3:32most unlikely man who' lived among them
  80. 3:35all along Dennis Raider was
  81. 3:38arrested I am
  82. 3:41BTK I'm I'm the guy there after 100% on
  83. 3:45this program you'll see new information
  84. 3:48that offers insight into the Deviant
  85. 3:50mind of Dennis Raider if I had never
  86. 3:52gotone into sexual fantasies really off
  87. 3:54the deep in I never became what I was he
  88. 3:57is just the most unique unprecedented
  89. 4:02combination of
  90. 4:05perversion packaged to look like a human
  91. 4:07being but I've ever seen him you'll hear
  92. 4:09his excuses on why he says he had to
  93. 4:12kill uh they fantasies are what got me
  94. 4:15in trouble I just went from one fantasy
  95. 4:18to bigger and bigger bigger PR soon was
  96. 4:20involved in murder and then that fueled
  97. 4:23the next one and it just went on and on
  98. 4:25there is one denst rator and that's a
  99. 4:27murderer that's a coward all told in an
  100. 4:30appallingly matter OFA Manner and put a
  101. 4:33gar over his neck and pulled up on it
  102. 4:36that's when I guess factor x whatever
  103. 4:37the monster to or totally then there's
  104. 4:40no monster in him he is the monster
  105. 4:42himself tonight an exclusive jailhouse
  106. 4:46interview with the man who named himself
  107. 4:48BTK for his propensity to bind torture
  108. 4:52and kill his victims we'll examine
  109. 4:54Dennis Raider's three decades long reign
  110. 4:56of terror and the exhaustive police
  111. 4:59investigation that finally caught him
  112. 5:01we'll also get an inside look at a man
  113. 5:04with two lives a husband a father a cub
  114. 5:07scout leader and church president living
  115. 5:09unassumingly in his community but also a
  116. 5:12man who secretly hunted down and killed
  117. 5:1510 innocent people and then bragged
  118. 5:17about it in his insatiable thirst for
  119. 5:20attention all right this interview
  120. 5:22obtained by NBC news after it was
  121. 5:25completed was conducted by a Harvard
  122. 5:27trained forensic psychologist Robert
  123. 5:29Mand
  124. 5:30who performs more than a 100 evaluations
  125. 5:32for criminal and civil cases each year
  126. 5:35he was hired by the defense team to
  127. 5:37assess Raiders sanity go farther why
  128. 5:39don't you just shut it down I say I
  129. 5:41can't I can't this specific conversation
  130. 5:44took place just a couple of hours after
  131. 5:46Raider had pleaded guilty to 10 counts
  132. 5:48of murder in June and put on what many
  133. 5:51people thought was a chilling
  134. 5:52performance in court as you listen to
  135. 5:55what he says from behind bars to see
  136. 5:57what light it may shed keep in mind
  137. 5:59Raider knew he was being taped and knew
  138. 6:01that it might be seen on National
  139. 6:03Television if you're looking for remorse
  140. 6:06from the BTK killer you won't find it
  141. 6:08here really I was just a little
  142. 6:09embarrassed in front of the world uh but
  143. 6:13uh not totally
  144. 6:15and you know I it didn't bother me too
  145. 6:18bad uh you know I had I could relax a
  146. 6:20little bit I had water to drink so I I
  147. 6:23didn't really feel too bad about it
  148. 6:25Dennis Raider was a HomeTown boy one of
  149. 6:27four Sons raised in the Witchita area by
  150. 6:30churchgoing Lutheran parents but while
  151. 6:32Raider appeared a clean-cut high school
  152. 6:35senior in this 1963 yearbook his
  153. 6:38writings speak of his already having
  154. 6:40bizarre sexual fantasies he kept them
  155. 6:43hidden as he served his country in the
  156. 6:44Air Force then married a girl from home
  157. 6:47in
  158. 6:471971 but a couple of years later Raider
  159. 6:50could no longer keep those fantasies
  160. 6:52locked only in his mind his obsession
  161. 6:55with sex and bondage evolved into
  162. 6:58deviant violent Acts carried out on real
  163. 7:00people and ultimately led to murder I
  164. 7:04got this fantasy I started working out
  165. 7:05this fantasy in my mind and once that
  166. 7:08potential that person become a fantasy I
  167. 7:10can just loop loop it over I lay in bed
  168. 7:13at night thinking about this person the
  169. 7:16events and how it's going to happen and
  170. 7:17it become a real almost like a picture
  171. 7:19show you know I wanted to go ahead and
  172. 7:21produce it and direct it and go through
  173. 7:23with it no matter what the costs were
  174. 7:25the the
  175. 7:26consequences uh this that was going to
  176. 7:28happen one way or another maybe not that
  177. 7:30day but it was going to happen no one
  178. 7:32knows for sure why Raider had to kill to
  179. 7:35fulfill those fantasies but in this
  180. 7:37interview with the psychologist Raider
  181. 7:39says that he picked his first victims
  182. 7:41members of the ottero family utterly at
  183. 7:44random in late
  184. 7:461973 he recently had been laid off from
  185. 7:48a job and says he was feeling down and
  186. 7:51out at the time and had begun trolling
  187. 7:54as he put it in certain neighborhoods
  188. 7:56including along Edgemore Drive where the
  189. 7:58otos lived well that neighborhood I
  190. 8:02guess became a what I call a
  191. 8:04haunt as I call it I had special appeal
  192. 8:08to it I've been there I started knowing
  193. 8:10the roads I knew the people you I drive
  194. 8:12by watch Cars people pull out of their
  195. 8:14homes and people go wrote telephone
  196. 8:16numbers down wrote addresses down this
  197. 8:19is how it really started right here is
  198. 8:21by hunts the that area the edore area
  199. 8:24was my first big haunt Julia Tero her
  200. 8:27husband and their five children lived on
  201. 8:29Edmore then and it was just Mrs otero's
  202. 8:32terrible misfortune that she happened to
  203. 8:34catch Dennis Raider's eye while he was
  204. 8:36driving down her street she came out of
  205. 8:39the house and took the kids to school so
  206. 8:40I followed him to school and I thought
  207. 8:43well that's a corner house that's a
  208. 8:45possibility and I was in between work
  209. 8:48Idle Hands what is it Idle Hands what's
  210. 8:52Workshop yes and all these things seem
  211. 8:54to happen most the time when I had Idle
  212. 8:56Hands M uh I had just lost a job
  213. 9:00cessa uh that was demoralizing to me so
  214. 9:03anyway they became a potential Target uh
  215. 9:06so they were convenient convenient uh
  216. 9:09how did they fuel the sexual fantasy
  217. 9:11then was theref about Mrs auro is
  218. 9:14attractive and then I saw Josephine too
  219. 9:17Josephine was the oto's 11-year-old
  220. 9:20daughter so I must have had that
  221. 9:23somewhere in my mind a younger person
  222. 9:24that must have locked in on me it would
  223. 9:26be nearly 2 months before Raider Act did
  224. 9:29on the sexual fantasy involving Mrs
  225. 9:31Otero and her daughter which he says
  226. 9:34began brewing in his brain and when he
  227. 9:37finally did it would establish his
  228. 9:39pattern of brutality and deception
  229. 9:41toward all of his victims Raider broke
  230. 9:44into the home of the objects of his
  231. 9:46obsession in January
  232. 9:481974 he says he entered the home that
  233. 9:51day a very anxious man though he
  234. 9:53recounts the story with a strange lack
  235. 9:56of emotion we were all stream you know
  236. 9:59and and all sudden I already cut the
  237. 10:02phone line I already cut the phone line
  238. 10:03and and it's funny cuz I left my knife I
  239. 10:06left the Cutters
  240. 10:08there and I can't had come back and get
  241. 10:10those later but uh I then the door
  242. 10:12opened so here I am you know so do I
  243. 10:15just walk out the back door and they
  244. 10:16call the police or I go for it and I
  245. 10:19went for it chilling details of his
  246. 10:21first killings and of his victim's final
  247. 10:24words Mrs lero had woke up and uh and
  248. 10:28she actually said said um have God God
  249. 10:31have mercy on your soul when confessions
  250. 10:34of BTK
  251. 10:38continues when Dennis Raider broke into
  252. 10:40the otero's home even though he was
  253. 10:42brandishing a gun he says the family
  254. 10:45didn't take him too seriously at first
  255. 10:48what happened once they saw you okay
  256. 10:51well they thought it was a joke uh I
  257. 10:52went in I think it was a younger or t
  258. 10:54they were all in the kitchen they were
  259. 10:55making sandwich male or female no it was
  260. 10:58a younger the bo Junior Joseph Raider
  261. 11:01says to keep the family calm he made up
  262. 11:04a story about why he was there Mr
  263. 11:07actually stepped up and told him I was
  264. 11:09to come in for some uh food I was wanted
  265. 11:12in California or wanted I needed some
  266. 11:14food and water and some money and
  267. 11:18transportation that was my Roose to kind
  268. 11:20of calm him down he kind of laughed a
  269. 11:22little bit he said well this is a joke
  270. 11:24who said you were my brother-in-law
  271. 11:26Raider says the family bought his lie
  272. 11:28about being on the run from the law and
  273. 11:30not wanting to hurt them and so at
  274. 11:33gunpoint they acques to his tying up all
  275. 11:36four of them mother and father and
  276. 11:38younger son and daughter without a
  277. 11:40struggle so they were cooperating with
  278. 11:42you 100% And that's probably was their
  279. 11:45demise if they probably struggled and
  280. 11:46fought with me that would have been a
  281. 11:48different story but they felt fairly
  282. 11:50comfortable so that's what I was going
  283. 11:52to do as Raider tells this story like he
  284. 11:55does so often he paints his own conduct
  285. 11:57in the best possible light
  286. 12:00so he says he took pains to make his
  287. 12:02victims feel even more comfortable by
  288. 12:04actually loosening some of the binds
  289. 12:06around their hands and feet I'm trying
  290. 12:08to comfort them as much as I could to
  291. 12:10keep him quiet because you actually were
  292. 12:12worried about it both okay well yeah go
  293. 12:16I'm a bad guy I care for people you know
  294. 12:18have concerns for people so and I hadn't
  295. 12:22really crossed that path yet where I was
  296. 12:23going to kill the people yet so I was in
  297. 12:25still that concern mode what you're
  298. 12:27seeing here is a very
  299. 12:30early form of a future serial killer
  300. 12:33who's still trying to decide what it is
  301. 12:35he's going to get out of these
  302. 12:36crimes we asked James Allen Fox one of
  303. 12:40the nation's leading criminologists and
  304. 12:42a professor at Northeastern University
  305. 12:44to give his analysis of this interview
  306. 12:47he has studied serial killers for 25
  307. 12:49years and has written numerous books his
  308. 12:51most recent one on serial killers
  309. 12:54includes BTK he wants to fulfill his
  310. 12:57fantasy but it's necessary for them to
  311. 13:00feel excessive suffering at this stage
  312. 13:03he hadn't yet made a decision to kill I
  313. 13:05had all control
  314. 13:06completely uh and then I and then went
  315. 13:09in the other room and I thought do I do
  316. 13:12I just leave or what they already know
  317. 13:14me my my face so I went back and put a
  318. 13:17plastic bag over mr's head and and put a
  319. 13:21garnet over his neck and pulled up on it
  320. 13:23and that's when it they really hit the
  321. 13:25fan then cuz they all could see what I
  322. 13:27was doing Raider describ tries first
  323. 13:29strangling the mother and father while
  324. 13:32their 9-year-old son and 11-year-old
  325. 13:34daughter watched although he is
  326. 13:36describing acts of unspeakable cruelty
  327. 13:39his voice is utterly devoid of emotion
  328. 13:42which makes listening to it that much
  329. 13:43harder kids were watching this yes they
  330. 13:45were watching it they were screaming and
  331. 13:47hollering did you want to move them from
  332. 13:49the scene at all no no I had to get in
  333. 13:52control they it was really noisy they
  334. 13:54were you know they were screaming and
  335. 13:57the noises bother yeah noises bother me
  336. 13:59and I the mail man will be out there or
  337. 14:00somebody be walking by so I had to
  338. 14:02control it very quickly he says he found
  339. 14:04the noise annoying because only looks at
  340. 14:08these events from his own perspective
  341. 14:10this is all a script designed to please
  342. 14:14him because remember it was almost like
  343. 14:16these people weren't real they were just
  344. 14:18actors and they didn't matter What
  345. 14:21mattered was his enjoyment and the kid
  346. 14:23screaming was just taken away from his
  347. 14:25enjoying all of this stuff how can he
  348. 14:27how can he get aroused with all these
  349. 14:30kids screaming he completely dehumanizes
  350. 14:33yes the
  351. 14:34kids Sarah Kell are very good at that
  352. 14:37that makes it possible for them to kill
  353. 14:39it was just something that I had to
  354. 14:42do uh once I started with M ter I knew I
  355. 14:46had to do all I had to do all four of
  356. 14:48them uh it's like an execution once you
  357. 14:51started there was Witnesses you had to
  358. 14:53do it all the way around for someone who
  359. 14:56seems so callous you might assume Raider
  360. 14:58was always always a cooly efficient
  361. 15:00killer but the way he tells it Raider
  362. 15:03didn't have a clue how much force it
  363. 15:04took to end a life and so tried several
  364. 15:08times to strangle Mrs Otero only to have
  365. 15:10her wake up again during the woman's
  366. 15:13last desperate struggle for
  367. 15:15Consciousness Raider says she was fully
  368. 15:17aware he was snuffing out the lives of
  369. 15:19her husband and two children in what he
  370. 15:23says were her last words to him Mrs
  371. 15:25otero's Humanity shines against the
  372. 15:28Killer inhumanity
  373. 15:29Mrs lero had woke up and U and she
  374. 15:33actually
  375. 15:34said have God God have mercy on your
  376. 15:37soul that's what she
  377. 15:39said put her
  378. 15:41down
  379. 15:45permanently this woman who probably
  380. 15:49knows now that she might be going to
  381. 15:53die she is generous with you asking God
  382. 15:58to have mercy on you Soul mhm
  383. 16:01yeah yeah pretty generous
  384. 16:05thing to
  385. 16:07tell kill you that's killed and tortured
  386. 16:11her
  387. 16:12family and is about to do the same to
  388. 16:15her Raider eventually took young
  389. 16:18Josephine Otero down to the basement of
  390. 16:20her home and hanged her from a pipe the
  391. 16:24police found Sean near Josephine's
  392. 16:27body and going forward
  393. 16:31Recollections of what he had done with
  394. 16:33these victims fueled his desire to do it
  395. 16:36again Raider says now the whole
  396. 16:39experience left him quaking well I was
  397. 16:41really un not a sexual High I was just
  398. 16:44scared High I was really nervous swea
  399. 16:47and I had sweat running off me all over
  400. 16:48the place and I just you I had gloves on
  401. 16:52I had PE clothes they were just full
  402. 16:54water
  403. 16:56sweat was really my clothes were just so
  404. 16:59sweat very nervous not like a master
  405. 17:02criminal at all this was my first my
  406. 17:05first time that i' never crossed that
  407. 17:08barrier several hours later Charlie ooto
  408. 17:12then 15 and his sister Carman then 13
  409. 17:15came home from school as I walked
  410. 17:17through the back door I noticed the
  411. 17:19kitchen was in disarray um things were
  412. 17:22on the floor didn't look right and I
  413. 17:24yelled out as anybody home that's when I
  414. 17:27heard my sister cry out to come quick I
  415. 17:30ran through the hallway down to the
  416. 17:31bedroom and I found Carmen with my
  417. 17:34parents uh my father was tied up his
  418. 17:37eyes were bulging his tongue was about
  419. 17:38bit off my mother was on the bed she
  420. 17:42didn't even look like my mother and uh I
  421. 17:45looked at my dad and I could I could
  422. 17:47smell the death and the fear in the room
  423. 17:50Charlie and Carmen had not seen what had
  424. 17:52happened to their younger brother and
  425. 17:54sister when they were taken to the
  426. 17:55police station they say they told police
  427. 17:58to make sure Jo Jose Jr and Josephine
  428. 18:00did not enter the home so I was telling
  429. 18:02the police the whole time go to Josie
  430. 18:05and Joey's school and keep them from
  431. 18:07coming home I do not want them to come
  432. 18:09home and find the house the way it is
  433. 18:11with police everywhere
  434. 18:13we were afraid of of what they would see
  435. 18:17um we were at the police department for
  436. 18:19quite a while and we kept asking them
  437. 18:20you know did you get a hold of the
  438. 18:22little ones and finally they they
  439. 18:24finally told us you don't have to worry
  440. 18:26about that um um were killed also when
  441. 18:30they told me about Josie and Joey I just
  442. 18:33died inside after that day I lost my
  443. 18:36religion instantly the minute I saw my
  444. 18:38mother I said there cannot be a God not
  445. 18:40only can there not be a God but I hate
  446. 18:42him if he is a God if there is
  447. 18:44one a despair not difficult to
  448. 18:47understand from a man whose mother
  449. 18:49father sister and brother were
  450. 18:51slaughtered in their own home horribly
  451. 18:54and
  452. 18:55inexplicably while the oos were the
  453. 18:57first they would not be the last people
  454. 18:59to fall victim to Dennis Raiders hellish
  455. 19:02World more bodies more suffering loved
  456. 19:05ones more questions about who he was why
  457. 19:09he was doing
  458. 19:13this probing deeper into a dark mind I
  459. 19:17don't think it was actually the person
  460. 19:18that I was after I think it was the
  461. 19:19dream it just an object that's how it
  462. 19:21work a catted mouse game with the police
  463. 19:24begins when confessions of BTK continues
  464. 19:28when Witchita police learned that two
  465. 19:30children and their parents had been
  466. 19:32murdered they of course looked at the
  467. 19:34likeliest suspects people who knew the
  468. 19:36family police however were about to
  469. 19:38learn that they were dealing with a
  470. 19:40serial killer a man who three decades
  471. 19:42later would offer details about his
  472. 19:44crimes and his callousness in tapes
  473. 19:47never broadcast before again Edie
  474. 19:52Magnus after murdering four members of
  475. 19:55the Otero family Dennis Raider spent the
  476. 19:58next several years killing again and
  477. 20:00again and again his next three victims
  478. 20:03were all young women in this interview
  479. 20:06with the psychologist Raider dismisses
  480. 20:08each victim as a project he says he'd
  481. 20:11Begin by stalking stalking stage is when
  482. 20:14you start learning more about your
  483. 20:15victims potential victims uh went to the
  484. 20:18library I looked up their names that
  485. 20:20address cross reference and called them
  486. 20:22a couple of times drove F there whenever
  487. 20:24I could and each time he struck Raider
  488. 20:27said he was armed with what he calls his
  489. 20:30hit kit kit contain what uh plastic bags
  490. 20:34rope tape uh knife gun all those would
  491. 20:38be the kit they' be where I could have
  492. 20:39them in the house and gather them up
  493. 20:41tools that would come to define the work
  494. 20:43of BTK the victims were often discovered
  495. 20:46bound with tape or rope tied in unusual
  496. 20:49knots you had to have the control which
  497. 20:51is the bonding that's been a big thing
  498. 20:53with me my sexual fantasy is if I'm if
  499. 20:57I'm going to kill a victim or do
  500. 20:59something a victim is have them bound
  501. 21:01and
  502. 21:02tied um now somewhere along the
  503. 21:07line in my dreams I had what they call
  504. 21:10torture
  505. 21:11chambers and to relieve your sexual
  506. 21:13fantasies you have to go to the the kill
  507. 21:163 months after the ottero murders in
  508. 21:18April of
  509. 21:191974 Raider's next victim was Kathy
  510. 21:22brigh a 21-year-old college student once
  511. 21:26again he' selected her randomly while
  512. 21:28driving down her street as he told the
  513. 21:30court in June and I saw her go in the
  514. 21:32house with somebody else and I thought
  515. 21:34that's a possibility Raider's plan was
  516. 21:36to lie in wait and overtake Cathy when
  517. 21:38she came home but the plan went ay when
  518. 21:41she unexpectedly showed up with her
  519. 21:43brother Kevin Raiders said in court he
  520. 21:45was able to get brother and sister tied
  521. 21:48up but the knots that bound Kevin were
  522. 21:50not holding were you armed with a
  523. 21:52handgun at that time also yes I had a
  524. 21:54handgun what happened when you came I
  525. 21:56actually had two handguns
  526. 21:59um well I started strangling the either
  527. 22:01the uh gett broke or he broke his bonds
  528. 22:04and he jumped up real quick like I
  529. 22:06pulled my gun and quickly shot in hit
  530. 22:09him in the head he fell over I could see
  531. 22:12the blood and Raider said he thought
  532. 22:14Kevin was dead and turned to strangle
  533. 22:17Kathy when he heard Kevin move the two
  534. 22:19men struggled again and Raider shot him
  535. 22:21for a second time in the head he then
  536. 22:24continued trying to strangle Cathy but
  537. 22:26was unsuccessful and and so stabbed her
  538. 22:29multiple times in the chest meanwhile
  539. 22:32much to Raider's surprise Kevin had
  540. 22:34somehow managed to escape though his
  541. 22:36head wounds from the gunshots left him
  542. 22:38unable to clearly describe the killer to
  543. 22:40police I thought the police were coming
  544. 22:42at that time I heard the door open I
  545. 22:44thought no that's it and I stepped out
  546. 22:47there and he I can see him running down
  547. 22:48the street so I quickly cleaned up
  548. 22:50everything that I could and left 6
  549. 22:53months later in October 1974 Raider
  550. 22:56announced himself to authorities in the
  551. 22:59first of many letters he sent to
  552. 23:00newspapers and other media Outlets
  553. 23:02communic that would come to include
  554. 23:04poems and puzzles it began a campaign
  555. 23:07that would reveal his other motive to
  556. 23:09kill publicity a twisted desire for
  557. 23:12celebrity a sick Obsession that Raider
  558. 23:15like some other serial killers had to be
  559. 23:17known and feared to get credit for all
  560. 23:20his handiwork it was Raider who came up
  561. 23:22with BTK as a name for himself I just
  562. 23:25put in one of the first letters I was
  563. 23:28always r i put it out that first I think
  564. 23:29it was just buying torture kill now I
  565. 23:32had a label on me like the like the
  566. 23:35Green River killar and Son of Sam and a
  567. 23:39whole slew of others The Boston
  568. 23:42Strangler the police now knew the
  569. 23:44murders of the Otero family and Kathy
  570. 23:46brigh were linked that they had a serial
  571. 23:48killer in their midst for tactical
  572. 23:51reasons though it would be several years
  573. 23:53before they disclosed that information
  574. 23:55to the public still they wanted to
  575. 23:58communic Comm unicate with the
  576. 23:59mysterious Strangler police quietly
  577. 24:01placed a classified ad in the big
  578. 24:03Hometown daily BTK help is available
  579. 24:07there was no response and Raider did not
  580. 24:09kill again for 3 years you know it
  581. 24:12wasn't something I just could do all the
  582. 24:13time so whenever it was convenient it
  583. 24:15would have been easier probably if you
  584. 24:17were like a spy or something where you
  585. 24:18could go sit there and watch but I
  586. 24:20didn't have that I had to work under
  587. 24:23camouflage then in March 1977 Raider
  588. 24:26struck again his victim sure vianne 24
  589. 24:29years old he said in court he'd watched
  590. 24:32her young son walk into the house and
  591. 24:35spontaneously chose that family to
  592. 24:37victimize I kind of forced myself in I
  593. 24:40just walked in just opened the door
  594. 24:42walked in and then pulled a pistol
  595. 24:44Shirley vianne was home with her three
  596. 24:46small children whom Raider coralled into
  597. 24:49a bathroom uh the kids were really
  598. 24:51banging on the door holler screaming
  599. 24:53it's horrifying to remember that Raider
  600. 24:55himself was a young father at this time
  601. 24:58his own son was not yet two but with the
  602. 25:01sounds of the Vian children in the
  603. 25:03background he said he simply worked as
  604. 25:05fast as he could comforted her a little
  605. 25:08bit and then went ahead and tigh it up
  606. 25:09and then put a bag a bag overhead and
  607. 25:12strangled her in another admission that
  608. 25:15reveals Raider's depravity he told the
  609. 25:17psychologist the thrill had little to do
  610. 25:20with the kill or for that matter with
  611. 25:22the victim herself and I don't think it
  612. 25:24was actually the person that I was after
  613. 25:26I think it was the dream uh I know
  614. 25:28that's not really nice to say about a
  615. 25:30person but they were basically an object
  616. 25:32they're just an object that's how it
  617. 25:33work I had more satisfaction building up
  618. 25:36to it and afterwards than I did the
  619. 25:38actual killing of the person many serial
  620. 25:41killers objectify their victim they
  621. 25:43dehumanize them they're tools they're
  622. 25:45instruments for their own Pleasures how
  623. 25:46does someone who is a married young
  624. 25:51father mhm objectify people and kill
  625. 25:54them the process is called
  626. 25:56compartmentalization
  627. 25:58many people able to divide the world
  628. 26:00into those they care about and love
  629. 26:03truly and everyone else who's Expendable
  630. 26:06he says that he had more satisfaction
  631. 26:09anticipating his kills and in the
  632. 26:11aftermath of killing than he did in the
  633. 26:15actual killing that's his fantasy the
  634. 26:17planning process the stalking the
  635. 26:20hunting is very enjoyable to him and the
  636. 26:26aftermath once he's killed to see that
  637. 26:28he to see what he's done that's
  638. 26:31fulfilling too that's when he would
  639. 26:32literally climax the sexual fantasies
  640. 26:36the obsession with bondage Raider claims
  641. 26:38it's been swirling in his head since he
  642. 26:40was a child he remembers being aroused
  643. 26:43as a young child when his mother would
  644. 26:45spank him Raider has written in letters
  645. 26:48which no one's sure are true that he
  646. 26:50secretly perused SNM magazines as a boy
  647. 26:54stole panties peeped in Windows he
  648. 26:56writes of hanging a cat and then a dog
  649. 27:00how does sexual
  650. 27:02fantasy and even an obsession with
  651. 27:04bondage lead to murder it doesn't
  652. 27:07necessarily what makes serial killers
  653. 27:09different than other people who might
  654. 27:11fantasize about power dominance control
  655. 27:13is that they do not have a legitimate
  656. 27:16way to satisfy their need for power so
  657. 27:19they take they take and grab that power
  658. 27:22in the most violent way at the end of
  659. 27:241977 in December Dennis Raider killed
  660. 27:27his seventh victim Nancy Fox uh broke in
  661. 27:31and waited for her to come home in the
  662. 27:33kitchen this time Raider's plans went
  663. 27:36smoothly as the single working girl who
  664. 27:38was just 25 came home alone I confronted
  665. 27:42her uh told her there I was a uh I had a
  666. 27:45problem sexual problem that I would have
  667. 27:47to tie up and have sex with her Raider
  668. 27:50said he handcuffed and tied Nancy Fox
  669. 27:53strangled her with a belt left his
  670. 27:55Telltale seamen by the body and got out
  671. 27:58without a hitch then he called the
  672. 28:00police Raider actually had the audacity
  673. 28:02to phone 911 and alert authorities to
  674. 28:05his own crime you will find a homicide
  675. 28:09at
  676. 28:10843 South persing ncy Fox sorry sir I
  677. 28:14can't understand you what is your
  678. 28:17address gave
  679. 28:2084 in the jail house interview Raider
  680. 28:23said in hindsight he thinks that call
  681. 28:25was dumb that was kind of a that was
  682. 28:27kind of an impulse really a really
  683. 28:29stupid thing to do because uh they I
  684. 28:32left my voice pattern and my voice on
  685. 28:34there and still Raider was not done
  686. 28:38communicating the following month he
  687. 28:40sent a poem written with a child's
  688. 28:42printing set on an index card to the
  689. 28:44Witchita Eagle Newspaper the poem
  690. 28:46patterned after a nursery rhyme referred
  691. 28:49to Shirley vian's murder several days
  692. 28:52later he sent another letter the most
  693. 28:54disturbing one yet the one that finally
  694. 28:57put the killer on news and put the
  695. 28:59community in a tail spin what kind of
  696. 29:02leads do you have we have absolutely
  697. 29:04nothing that will point us to any one
  698. 29:06particular
  699. 29:08individual a killer now in the spotlight
  700. 29:11he craves he absolutely terrorized the
  701. 29:13community everyone was a suspect the
  702. 29:15fear was palpable when confessions of
  703. 29:18BTK continues I sat in my office and
  704. 29:22read his account of what he had
  705. 29:24done and I wasn't ready for that it was
  706. 29:28February
  707. 29:291978 and then TV news director Ron loen
  708. 29:32was reading with disgust and revulsion a
  709. 29:35letter that had arrived in his Newsroom
  710. 29:37at cake tv there was no doubt in my mind
  711. 29:40it was from BTK in a two-page single
  712. 29:43space letter Raider using the name BTK
  713. 29:46again announced himself as a serial
  714. 29:48killer and then went even further in his
  715. 29:51bid for publicity comparing himself to
  716. 29:54Son of Sam in New York Jack the Ripper
  717. 29:56in London and the hillside Strangler in
  718. 29:58Los Angeles claiming they were all
  719. 30:00driven to kill by what he called factor
  720. 30:03x it seems senseless but we cannot help
  721. 30:06it he wrote there is no help no cure
  722. 30:10except death or being caught and put
  723. 30:12away he was making it clear that uh he
  724. 30:16wanted to be uh elevated to the serial
  725. 30:19killer Hall of Fame this is the league
  726. 30:21that he said he should be in he listed
  727. 30:2415 to 17 additional serial killers
  728. 30:28uh Infamous serial killers Through the
  729. 30:30Ages Through the Ages BTK is a
  730. 30:34student was the first thing that flashed
  731. 30:36through my mind of Serial murders along
  732. 30:39with a lurid description of the Otero
  733. 30:41killings loen says the killer was
  734. 30:43literally begging for ink a little
  735. 30:46paragraph in the newspaper would have
  736. 30:47been enough how many people do I have to
  737. 30:50kill until I get the recognition I
  738. 30:52deserve I've always thought that you
  739. 30:54know he had the uh The Misfortune given
  740. 30:57his aspiration
  741. 30:58to live in a small media Market you know
  742. 31:01he never got the attention because he
  743. 31:03lived in Witchita if he' done any of
  744. 31:05this in Los Angeles had been a different
  745. 31:07story even more chilling BTK threatened
  746. 31:11he was bearing down on murder victim
  747. 31:13number eight he said that in fact he was
  748. 31:15stalking a victim right now he picked
  749. 31:17his next victim he indicated how he was
  750. 31:20going to kill that person and then the
  751. 31:21last sentence was maybe it's you he was
  752. 31:24trying to frighten people oh definitely
  753. 31:26and he succeeded it turned out the
  754. 31:29Witchita police had been intentionally
  755. 31:31denying BTK publicity for some time
  756. 31:35profilers had warned them against caving
  757. 31:37into the Killer's demands for attention
  758. 31:39on the grounds that if he got it he'd
  759. 31:41kill again but that tactic clearly
  760. 31:44hadn't worked BTK kept on killing anyway
  761. 31:47now faced with the strangler's written
  762. 31:49threat to take yet another life the
  763. 31:51police abruptly changed
  764. 31:53strategy at that point we need to step
  765. 31:57up and say yes we recognize you as BTK
  766. 32:02uh and uh and we do have a serial killer
  767. 32:06here so police chief Richard Leman and
  768. 32:09news director Ron loen appeared on TV
  769. 32:12that February 1978 side by side BTK
  770. 32:16claims to have strangled a total of
  771. 32:18seven women it was loan himself who
  772. 32:21broke the story of BTK to the community
  773. 32:24during that newscast loen who never
  774. 32:27talked public about these events before
  775. 32:29discussing them with us became in effect
  776. 32:32live bait the police said I guess based
  777. 32:35again on their talk with their
  778. 32:36behavioral people that this is a cry for
  779. 32:38help this guy has more that he wants to
  780. 32:40say we'd suggest that you do the story
  781. 32:43so that it has someone that he might
  782. 32:45choose to communicate with again how did
  783. 32:47you feel
  784. 32:48about offering yourself up as someone
  785. 32:52who would be willing to communicate with
  786. 32:54this deranged mass murderer well you
  787. 32:58know you want to help so if he wanted to
  788. 33:00write letters and they came to my
  789. 33:02attention why not it was quite a risk
  790. 33:05BTK had already murdered seven people
  791. 33:08and loen could end up getting far more
  792. 33:10than just a letter in the mail but there
  793. 33:12he sat what kind of leads do you have
  794. 33:15asking questions of chief leion for
  795. 33:18which there were no good answers very
  796. 33:20honestly we have no solid leads at all
  797. 33:23it was horrific news everything changed
  798. 33:26for me uh everything changed forever in
  799. 33:28witch loen says the effect of the
  800. 33:31bombshell announcement on this gentle
  801. 33:33family oriented city was instantaneous
  802. 33:37he absolutely terrorized the community
  803. 33:39everyone was a suspect girlfriends were
  804. 33:42concerned about their boyfriends there
  805. 33:43were parents who turned in their
  806. 33:45children the fear was palpable hoping
  807. 33:48BTK would contact him the police brought
  808. 33:51Lo and inside the investigation loen was
  809. 33:54provided a photo of a possible suspect
  810. 33:57and a police police revolver that gun
  811. 33:59creeped me out it was the tangible
  812. 34:02reminder that there was a killer out
  813. 34:04there and that at some level the police
  814. 34:06thought that he might be coming to see
  815. 34:08me just what was it that drove Dennis
  816. 34:10Raider to bind torture and kill so many
  817. 34:13innocent people Dr Factory x is probably
  818. 34:16something we never know in his jail
  819. 34:18house interview Raider blamed his murder
  820. 34:21spree on that mysterious Force he has
  821. 34:23always claimed was Way Beyond his
  822. 34:25control factor x something that's I use
  823. 34:29it um I actually think I'm maybe
  824. 34:32possessed with demons uh I was dropping
  825. 34:34on my head when I was a kid I've talked
  826. 34:36to
  827. 34:37some theological Christian people and
  828. 34:40some of those people are really strong
  829. 34:41they actually think well the Bible says
  830. 34:43that that there's
  831. 34:44demons and within you or come into you
  832. 34:48uh that's the only thing I can figure
  833. 34:49out I have you
  834. 34:51know you know something drove me to do
  835. 34:54this you know normal people just don't
  836. 34:55do this you can't stop it I can't stop
  837. 34:58it it's just it controls me you know
  838. 35:00it's a it's it's like it's in the
  839. 35:03driver's
  840. 35:04seat you that's probably the reason
  841. 35:06we're sitting here you know I could just
  842. 35:08say no I don't want to do this and go
  843. 35:10crawl in a hole but it's you know it's
  844. 35:12it's it's driving me you've actually
  845. 35:15used the term monster that there's this
  846. 35:18monster inside of
  847. 35:20you it almost sounds like that's
  848. 35:22something separate and apart like a
  849. 35:23different person yeah it's it's part of
  850. 35:26the compartment it's like switch back
  851. 35:28and forth and once this character takes
  852. 35:30over whatever it is it drives me
  853. 35:33onward
  854. 35:35uh know what it is but criminologist
  855. 35:38James Allen fox says he knows what it is
  856. 35:41it's bunk don't blame me I'm really a
  857. 35:43good guy but factor x I just couldn't
  858. 35:46resist it's the monster inside of me uh
  859. 35:49to use a technical term it's a
  860. 35:52poppycock it's just an excuse it was
  861. 35:55Dennis Raider making decisions not
  862. 35:58factor x he speculates at one point that
  863. 36:00he was dropped on his head yeah and that
  864. 36:03might have done something sure he'd like
  865. 36:05to believe that too it's someone else's
  866. 36:07fault there are lots of kids that fall
  867. 36:09off tricycles and fall out of cribs and
  868. 36:12they bang their heads and they don't
  869. 36:15have factor x or go on killing sprs it's
  870. 36:19just a way to deflect blame danst Raider
  871. 36:22is someone who's
  872. 36:24selfish uh narcissistic
  873. 36:28committed to his own Pleasures committed
  874. 36:31to fulfilling his sexual fantasies no
  875. 36:33matter who he hurts in the process in
  876. 36:361978 of course nobody knew what Raiders
  877. 36:39excuses were all they knew was that BTK
  878. 36:42was out there a seven-time murderer who
  879. 36:44was promising in his factor x Manifesto
  880. 36:47that he was about to take another
  881. 36:49innocent life so the investigation went
  882. 36:52into high gear unprecedented and yet
  883. 36:54unsuccessful for many years even though
  884. 36:57know he was right under their
  885. 37:00noses desperate police devise an unusual
  886. 37:03plan a secret message to BTK you were
  887. 37:06hoping that perhaps your killer might
  888. 37:08see it did you get any phone
  889. 37:12calls BTK was waiting waiting waiting
  890. 37:16waiting it was 1979 and Ron loen was
  891. 37:19studying yet another package from the
  892. 37:22mysterious serial killer at large in
  893. 37:24Witchita this one which arrived in loen
  894. 37:27TV news room more than a year after BTK
  895. 37:29had last been heard from was announcing
  896. 37:32not another murder but a failed attempt
  897. 37:35he broke in the glass he was in the
  898. 37:38basement
  899. 37:39waiting the intended victim a
  900. 37:4163-year-old woman Raider had been
  901. 37:44stalking unexpectedly spent the night
  902. 37:46out which saved her life but Raider made
  903. 37:49sure everybody knew he was still Prime
  904. 37:51to commit murder sending the media that
  905. 37:53package containing some personal items
  906. 37:55he'd stolen from her home and including
  907. 37:58one of his trademark poems which was a
  908. 38:01poem of death uh he said that he was
  909. 38:04disappointed she didn't come home that
  910. 38:06he intended to kill her Raider now
  911. 38:08claims in this interview with the
  912. 38:10psychologist that this woman wasn't the
  913. 38:12only one that got away is it safe to say
  914. 38:16that there are at least a few lucky
  915. 38:18people out there there's a lot of lucky
  916. 38:20people out there who you didn't kill
  917. 38:22that you had didn't need make of the
  918. 38:23house they come home or for some reason
  919. 38:26I didn't go there's a lot lucky people
  920. 38:28out there yes there have been more
  921. 38:30probably if I would have succeeded him
  922. 38:33I'm almost guarantee it after that
  923. 38:36failed murder attempt Wah's most famous
  924. 38:39and sought-after Strangler seemed to
  925. 38:41disappear from the scene after 5 years
  926. 38:44and seven bodies he stopped
  927. 38:46communicating in
  928. 38:471979 and the police simply couldn't find
  929. 38:50him despite a Manhunt unprecedented in
  930. 38:52scope that went on for years who spent a
  931. 38:55lot of their money working on this case
  932. 38:57and no one complained not one bit we
  933. 39:00first met former Witchita police chief
  934. 39:02Richard Lan last year before Dennis
  935. 39:04Raider was arrested and he talked quite
  936. 39:07candidly about the failure to catch BTK
  937. 39:10on his watch I think the community was
  938. 39:12probably as frustrated as I was and I
  939. 39:14don't think they were mad I think they
  940. 39:16had kind of the same feeling I did hey
  941. 39:17they're doing everything that they can
  942. 39:20possibly do to catch this guy lanan says
  943. 39:23they' tried everything from
  944. 39:24old-fashioned detective work to some
  945. 39:26ideas that sounded downright nutty we
  946. 39:29were trying to get this guy to
  947. 39:30communicate but did you feel at the time
  948. 39:33like I don't care how wacky it sounds
  949. 39:36let's try it anything short of of
  950. 39:38Psychics I wasn't into
  951. 39:41psychics but he was into trying a
  952. 39:43technique that as far as we know has
  953. 39:45never been attempted by law enforcement
  954. 39:47before or since the police once arranged
  955. 39:51to have a subliminal message one devised
  956. 39:53by profilers inserted into a local
  957. 39:56evening new newscast at cake tv to
  958. 39:59viewers the subliminal message looked
  959. 40:01like this just a flash of light but slow
  960. 40:05it down and there it was now call the
  961. 40:07chief and you were hoping that perhaps
  962. 40:10your killer might see it did you get any
  963. 40:12phone calls did anybody subconscious get
  964. 40:15tapped at all no we didn't get anything
  965. 40:17out of it wherever he was the killer
  966. 40:19could not or would not be reached even
  967. 40:22when the police got a break and were
  968. 40:24able to track down a letter BTK sent
  969. 40:26from a photo copier at Witchita State
  970. 40:29University they still couldn't catch him
  971. 40:31turns out Raider was a student there
  972. 40:33studying criminal justice we tracked the
  973. 40:37communication that he sent us to that uh
  974. 40:39copy machine that was at the activity
  975. 40:41center and we had detectives go back to
  976. 40:43Z Rock's company and they confirmed
  977. 40:46that's where it came from but he was on
  978. 40:48a list with several thousand others if
  979. 40:49you were a white male between 18 and 35
  980. 40:52you were on that list but we couldn't
  981. 40:55match him to either on any other list
  982. 40:57you will find a homicide at
  983. 41:00843 South virging and they had the
  984. 41:03Killer's voice on tape of course from
  985. 41:05that time he boldly called 911 to tell
  986. 41:08them he'd murdered Nancy Fox in time the
  987. 41:11police were able to have the technical
  988. 41:13quality of that taped call enhanced and
  989. 41:16it was played repeatedly on radio and TV
  990. 41:19he said it was probably stupid but he
  991. 41:21liked it he liked the fact that it's
  992. 41:23been played over and over and over for
  993. 41:25years and years yet even with with all
  994. 41:27that exposure nobody recognized the
  995. 41:30voice as that of a man named Dennis
  996. 41:32Raider another dead end I think I was
  997. 41:35lucky I think I was lucky quite a bit
  998. 41:37pretty lucky guy pretty lucky guy I
  999. 41:39think they got close a couple times I
1000. 41:41was just lucky incredibly so for a
1001. 41:43killer who may well have been seen
  1002. 41:45several times a handful of eyewitnesses
1003. 41:48helped police make sketches of how they
1004. 41:50remembered the suspect but the drawings
  1005. 41:53weren't especially helpful because
1006. 41:55nobody could quite agree on what BTK
1007. 41:57looked like as DNA matching evolved
1008. 42:00during the 1980s the police tried to use
1009. 42:02that technology to catch their killer
1010. 42:04more than 200 samples were taken from
1011. 42:07men living near the victims who fit
1012. 42:09btk's profile and compared to the seen
1013. 42:12they' preserved from several of the
1014. 42:13crime scenes nobody matched you had DNA
1015. 42:18evidence yes you had his voice on tape
1016. 42:22yes and you just couldn't get him
1017. 42:24couldn't get him you had the best
1018. 42:27Behavioral Science Minds in the country
1019. 42:30mhm helping you develop a profile of who
1020. 42:32he was and what he might do and you
1021. 42:34couldn't ever anticipate him could never
1022. 42:37anticipate him still lanan says now that
  1023. 42:40while they didn't know anything about
1024. 42:41Dennis Raider they knew a lot about BTK
1025. 42:45after uh he went dormant and stopped
1026. 42:47killing the theory was and everyone was
1027. 42:49saying well he's in prison uh or maybe
1028. 42:52he has an illness or something happened
  1029. 42:54and I never I never bought that I was
  1030. 42:56convinced
1031. 42:57he was one of us we had him pegged in
1032. 42:59terms of the type of individual we were
1033. 43:01looking for we had everything but a name
1034. 43:03in the jail house interview with the
1035. 43:05psychologist which we showed former
1036. 43:07Chief lanan Dennis Raider was openly
1037. 43:10scornful of local law enforcement and
1038. 43:12the police or the Keystone Cops and
1039. 43:15disdainful of all their years of effort
1040. 43:17you know they traced a lot of stuff down
1041. 43:19they traced The copier down the copers I
1042. 43:21used out at WSU but they couldn't make
1043. 43:24the connection from there they had 30
1044. 43:26some years to break it they couldn't do
1045. 43:27it the taxpayers are paying the money
1046. 43:29for CRA County they really need to have
1047. 43:31I think a sharper punch although they
1048. 43:33tried they tried they tried but were you
1049. 43:35offended when you heard him say the
  1050. 43:38witch cops couldn't close his case I'm
1051. 43:43not offended by anything he
1052. 43:45says uh at all it's all about him uh I
1053. 43:49know that the police officers did
1054. 43:51everything in their power I know that
1055. 43:52they finally caught him with everything
1056. 43:54you know about him now
1057. 43:57do you think that you should have been
1058. 43:59able to get him I'd like to tell you yes
1059. 44:02I really don't think we could have done
1060. 44:03any more than we did he called the
  1061. 44:05Witchita police the Keystone Cops I
1062. 44:08heard that uh again that's just Dennis
1063. 44:12Raider because what he was saying is to
1064. 44:14allow the witto police to catch him you
1065. 44:16know would be demeaning to him and it
1066. 44:19just bugs him it just drives him crazy
1067. 44:21so therefore he has to belittle the
1068. 44:23police department in order to elevate
1069. 44:25himself the conventional wisdom was that
1070. 44:27somehow he was so smart because he
1071. 44:29always stayed one step ahead of the
  1072. 44:31police I don't think he's smart at all
1073. 44:34we're not talking about a genius here
  1074. 44:36you know we're not talking about a
  1075. 44:37Hannibal Lector type individual I think
1076. 44:40he was just more lucky than anything uh
1077. 44:42in terms of what he did because he did
1078. 44:44it in such random fashion and because
1079. 44:46there was no connection between them and
1080. 44:48because he did it alone uh and it was so
1081. 44:51sporadic and it was over such a long
1082. 44:53period of time and probably most
1083. 44:56important lonan says is that Raider
1084. 44:58apparently told absolutely no one about
1085. 45:01what he had done I don't think he even
1086. 45:02joked about it I don't think he said oh
  1087. 45:04I could be a stranger type thing I don't
1088. 45:05think so year after year went by and the
1089. 45:09once hot BTK investigation eventually
1090. 45:12became a Cold Case by the mid 80s the
1091. 45:15Elite Police Unit created to hunt down
1092. 45:17the killer closed up shop once the
1093. 45:19city's Public Enemy Number One BTK
1094. 45:22became part of witch Legend and what was
1095. 45:26Dennis Raider doing all those years
  1096. 45:28hiding in plain
1097. 45:30sight those who knew the killer best
1098. 45:33were there hints of his secret life
1099. 45:36wouldn't those closest to Dennis Raider
1100. 45:38his wife his children have had to know
1101. 45:42something when confessions of BTK
1102. 45:45continues he spent years stalking and
1103. 45:47killing innocent people and then Dennis
1104. 45:49Raider known only as BTK seemed to stop
1105. 45:53he gradually disappeared from the
1106. 45:54headlines he craved and that is
1107. 45:57something he now says he could not
  1108. 45:59tolerate here again Edie
1109. 46:04Magnus after BTK disappeared in
1110. 46:071979 police would spend 25 more years in
1111. 46:11a frustrating search to try to capture
1112. 46:13him did you ever look around oh always
1113. 46:16BTK Ron loan knew could be anyone
1114. 46:20anywhere just listen to what the former
1115. 46:22witcha news director told us about the
  1116. 46:24killer a year before BTK was C I think
1117. 46:28this guy is uh probably a lot more
1118. 46:30normal than anybody thinks he told us
1119. 46:32that it was easy after he after he
1120. 46:34killed someone he just uh assumed his
  1121. 46:37rightful place in the world he's a
1122. 46:39person who has been walking in that
  1123. 46:42community and he's really The Stranger
1124. 46:44Beside You today that all sounds
  1125. 46:46positively prophetic because that's just
1126. 46:49what Dennis Raider was doing all those
1127. 46:51years hiding in plain sight raising his
  1128. 46:54children going to church getting a
1129. 46:56degree in his Spare Time attending
1130. 46:58Kansas State University home football
1131. 47:00games start in fact loen who took a look
1132. 47:03at Raiders interview with the
1133. 47:05psychologist says the serial killer is
1134. 47:07even more ordinary than he imagined his
1135. 47:10family is so wonderfully Kansas his
1136. 47:15daughter was a high school golf champion
1137. 47:17his son is I think in the Navy his his
1138. 47:20wife sings in the church choir uh has a
1139. 47:24a job in a uh in a convenience store
  1140. 47:28their average people uh making a a
1141. 47:31simple good life together boy you you
1142. 47:32would never pick him out of a
  1143. 47:35crowd uh I I thought there would be
1144. 47:37something that would be more evident but
1145. 47:39he was just as beige as beige could be
1146. 47:44Mike Fitch knew Raider when they were
1147. 47:46both employees at ADT where Raider
  1148. 47:49worked for nearly 15 years installing
1149. 47:51home security systems he remembers
  1150. 47:54Raider as a stickler for Perfection
1151. 47:56making making his customers happy was
1152. 47:58Raiders top priority even if he could be
  1153. 48:00cranky and critical of others I
1154. 48:02definitely didn't want to get on his
1155. 48:04wrong side till I was intimidated by him
1156. 48:06when I first started working but fit
1157. 48:08says he saw no hint of Raiders violent
1158. 48:11side we' sit around and have popcorn
1159. 48:14before he went home and what could be
1160. 48:16more solid American citizen than being
  1161. 48:18active in his young son's boy scouts I
1162. 48:20sh Dennis up as a cub scout leader
1163. 48:23fellow scouting leader Bob Monroe says
1164. 48:25Dennis Raider always set a good example
1165. 48:28for the boys in his troop and for
1166. 48:30Raider's own son who went on to be an
1167. 48:32eagle scout you say he took part in
1168. 48:34everything that we did in scotting and
1169. 48:36with his son which is very important in
1170. 48:38Cub scotting that you do work with your
1171. 48:40boys and so I considered him to be a
1172. 48:42very good parent and a very good scout
1173. 48:44leader at that time of course contrary
1174. 48:46to the common assumption that serial
1175. 48:48killers are generally loners or social
1176. 48:51outcasts criminologist James fox says
1177. 48:54they can often seem to be one of us many
1178. 48:57serial killers have families and and uh
  1179. 49:02children and
1180. 49:04friends and no one suspects them because
1181. 49:07they have this ordinary normal appearing
1182. 49:10life and what people don't know about is
1183. 49:13the darker side the Hidden Side so you
1184. 49:17can be someone who binds tortures and
1185. 49:21kills one minute and has a seemingly
  1186. 49:25normal life the next
1187. 49:28absolutely we've seen it time and time
1188. 49:31again John Wayne gasy of Chicago who
  1189. 49:34murdered 33 young men appeared normal
1190. 49:37enough he was once named JC's Man of the
1191. 49:40Year Ted Bundy considered Charming was a
1192. 49:43law student and socialized in political
1193. 49:45circles until he was caught he killed at
1194. 49:48least 33 women in five different states
1195. 49:51on the other hand New York's David
1196. 49:52burkowitz AKA Son of Sam who shot six
1197. 49:56was alone owner and so too was Jeffrey
1198. 49:58dmer of Milwaukee who dissected dead
1199. 50:01animals as a child then later murdered
1200. 50:04and dismembered 17 young men and boys
1201. 50:07but why would anyone ever suspect a man
1202. 50:10like Dennis Raider consider his
1203. 50:12substantial involvement with his local
1204. 50:13Lutheran Church Paul carlstead has known
1205. 50:16Raider through the church for 30 years
1206. 50:19and says he was an exemplary member he
1207. 50:21will be an usher he will uh run the
1208. 50:23sound system he'll count the money after
1209. 50:25the service if something needs to be
1210. 50:28done uh Dennis was always available to
1211. 50:30help as hard as this may be to believe
1212. 50:34the serial killer told the psychologist
1213. 50:35in his interview that he considers
1214. 50:37himself a religious person do you pray
  1215. 50:41yes I
1216. 50:44do study the Bible daily and that helps
1217. 50:47uh not only for not only just for
  1218. 50:50Spiritual a lot of it's good meanings in
1219. 50:52it good Concepts things that you can use
1220. 50:54in life even serial killers can believe
1221. 50:56in God this is not inconsistent with the
1222. 50:59kind of person who can fulfill his
1223. 51:02sexual fantasies who feels he has the
1224. 51:04right to do it with people whom he
  1225. 51:06dehumanizes objects
1226. 51:08things and Dr fox sees special
1227. 51:11significance in Raider taking over as
1228. 51:14the president of his church congregation
1229. 51:16just weeks before he was caught being in
  1230. 51:19charge being in control
  1231. 51:21Power uh
1232. 51:24importance is a is a theme in his life
1233. 51:28that's why he pursued this role in the
  1234. 51:29church in 1991 Raider had found a day
1235. 51:33job that could give him control and
1236. 51:35power too he was made a compliance
1237. 51:38officer Raider was now Ironically in
1238. 51:41charge of making certain others follow
1239. 51:43the letter of the law in Park City just
1240. 51:45north of Witchita his duties included
1241. 51:48making sure homeowners complied with
1242. 51:50various local ordinances like keeping
1243. 51:52their grass cut their yards free of
1244. 51:54junked cars or their dog dogs from
1245. 51:57running wild who' been tracking it down
1246. 51:59the dogs are somewhat territorial as
  1247. 52:00well as vicious that's him being
1248. 52:02interviewed by a local TV station the
1249. 52:05killer himself right there on the screen
1250. 52:07for all witch to see who would ever
1251. 52:10suspect this public servant was actually
1252. 52:13the monster BTK whom everyone feared but
1253. 52:17it was in that job that at least some
1254. 52:19people saw a darker side to Dennis
  1255. 52:21Raider D Stewart a longtime acquaintance
1256. 52:24of Raiders has a good friend who
1257. 52:26reported to him in the compliance
1258. 52:27Department his friend she says found him
1259. 52:30controlling and belligerent there were
1260. 52:32times when he when he yelled at her in
1261. 52:34front of other employees um he demeaned
1262. 52:37her he told her she would never be as
1263. 52:38smart as he was but she says he could
1264. 52:41turn his good and bad sides on and off
1265. 52:43he could be berating her he could be
1266. 52:45screaming at her and if the phone rang
1267. 52:48and it was a member of his family he
1268. 52:49turned into Ward Cleaver Dr Fox Says
  1269. 52:52this apparent Jacqueline Hyde
1270. 52:54personality is classic for many serial
  1271. 52:57killers I don't believe there are two
1272. 52:58Raiders in one body it's just that we
1273. 53:01all have a range in our personality and
1274. 53:05someone like Dennis Raider Point indeed
1275. 53:09has two different shades sides to his
1276. 53:12personality and he hides from the people
1277. 53:14in his life the dark
  1278. 53:19negative brutal wouldn't those closest
1279. 53:22to Dennis Raider his wife his children
1280. 53:26have had to know something nope we' like
1281. 53:30to believe that we we think it's
  1282. 53:33incomprehensible that those
  1283. 53:35closest wouldn't
1284. 53:37know John W gasey was bearing bodies in
1285. 53:40the crawl space of his home while he
1286. 53:43lived in that house with his wife and
1287. 53:45there was a horrible odor coming from
1288. 53:46the crawl space and she'd ask him about
1289. 53:48it what's that odor and he would say it
1290. 53:51was sewer gases and he would take care
1291. 53:53of it and she believed him Dennis
1292. 53:55Raider's wife would never suspect he
  1293. 53:58gave no
  1294. 53:59signs they'd find out eventually because
  1295. 54:02it seems Dennis Raider couldn't stand
1296. 54:05staying hidden forever I can just really
1297. 54:08stir the Hornet stuff by just showing
1298. 54:10them pictures and puzzles and playing a
1299. 54:11game with them I don't even have to go
1300. 54:13out and kill anybody this time after
1301. 54:15years of Silence BTK emerges from the
1302. 54:18Shadows more clues for police more
  1303. 54:21heartbreak for victim's families mom's
1304. 54:24house had been broken into and we didn't
1305. 54:26know what happened to her that is a trip
1306. 54:28to hell when confessions of BTK
  1307. 54:32continues January 2004 in Witchita
1308. 54:35Kansas Dennis Raider was 58 still living
1309. 54:39in the house on Independence Street
1310. 54:41still a compliance officer for Park City
1311. 54:44still an active member of the Christ
  1312. 54:46Lutheran Church he'd been married 32
1313. 54:48years his son and daughter were all
1314. 54:50grown up now and the other dentist
1315. 54:53Raider the brutal Strangler who' so far
1316. 54:56gotten away with all those murders all
1317. 54:58that time and hadn't been heard from in
1318. 55:0025 years BTK was retired he was he was
1319. 55:04going to go off the face of the Earth or
1320. 55:05so he says soon enough an excuse to grab
1321. 55:09the Limelight would come again the
1322. 55:11Witchita Eagle published an anniversary
1323. 55:13article about the mysterious serial
1324. 55:15killer known only by the name he'd given
1325. 55:18himself BTK for buying torture and kill
1326. 55:22and who had committed his first murders
1327. 55:2330 years earlier of course it was all so
1328. 55:27long ago Raider found his exploits
1329. 55:29weren't even Front Page News anymore he
1330. 55:32says it all made him feel a little itchy
1331. 55:35that really stirred it uh I read that in
  1332. 55:37the paper and I thought I always thought
1333. 55:39you know I'd like to bring this back out
  1334. 55:40again but should I
1335. 55:43uh and I think I've reached the point in
1336. 55:45their life the kids were gone you know
1337. 55:48not really bored but kind of bored and
  1338. 55:50something else Raider knew a local
1339. 55:52lawyer was writing a book about him or
  1340. 55:54about BTK that is
1341. 55:57that didn't sit too well either with the
1342. 55:58man who had such an enormous appetite to
1343. 56:01draw attention to himself Raider felt
1344. 56:04only he could do justice to his story
  1345. 56:07eventually I was going to tell a story
1346. 56:08in my terms and not his terms uh they
1347. 56:11already had the killings and so that's
  1348. 56:14factual but they didn't know how how I
1349. 56:16worked and moved around the projects the
1350. 56:19haunts uh outc victims they didn't know
1351. 56:22how that worked I can just uh really
  1352. 56:24stir the Hornet n up with
1353. 56:26through the media by just uh showing
1354. 56:29them pictures and puzzles and playing a
1355. 56:30game with him so in March 2004 Raider
1356. 56:34made contact not just signaling that he
1357. 56:36was still around but far more ominously
1358. 56:39sending what appeared to be proof of yet
1359. 56:42murder another young woman whose death
1360. 56:45had never been conclusively linked to
1361. 56:47BTK the innocuous looking piece of mail
1362. 56:50landed on Witchita Eagle reporter Hurst
1363. 56:52Lana's desk copied the envelope copied
1364. 56:55the letter took the letter straight to
1365. 56:56the police department did you read it
1366. 56:58there's nothing to read there are no
1367. 56:59words on it I thought it was crime scene
1368. 57:01photographs that some crackpot had
1369. 57:04gotten a hold of them on the Internet or
1370. 57:06something the pictures appeared to be
1371. 57:07pictures of a dead woman her body had
1372. 57:10been posed several different ways these
1373. 57:12were clearly not police photos and there
  1374. 57:15was something else a photocopy of a
1375. 57:17driver's license think you werly
  1376. 57:19driver's license and I immediately knew
  1377. 57:22this probably came from Vicky werley's
1378. 57:24killer in SE setember 1986 Vicky wagerle
1379. 57:28a young mother was found tied up and
1380. 57:31strangled in her home and a trophy had
1381. 57:33been taken in this case her driver's
1382. 57:35license so police had naturally
1383. 57:37suspected BTK but there were differences
1384. 57:40too especially that the killer had never
1385. 57:42publicly boasted about it afterward as
1386. 57:44was his pattern now all these years
1387. 57:47later in addition to the copies of the
  1388. 57:49photos and the driver's license there
1389. 57:51was the envelope they came in the return
1390. 57:53address at Bill Thomas kilman BTK and
1391. 57:57that's when we realized this may be the
1392. 58:00real deal tell me about that moment it
  1393. 58:03was just total
1394. 58:05disbelief that he was still here Lavana
1395. 58:09agreed to give the police two days to
1396. 58:11nail it down and then broke the story
1397. 58:14The Ghost was back police could now say
1398. 58:17that more than 17 years earlier Vicky
1399. 58:19werly had indeed been btk's eighth known
  1400. 58:23victim so by resurfacing in in 20 2004
  1401. 58:27and sending a a letter with a photograph
  1402. 58:31driver's license of a victim say I'm
1403. 58:34still here you never caught me and I've
1404. 58:36been here all along his need for
  1405. 58:39attention is apparently un unquenched I
1406. 58:42absolutely thought that that this was
1407. 58:44the tip of the iceberg former Witchita
1408. 58:46TV news director Ron loen made that
1409. 58:48prediction to us almost a year before
1410. 58:51Dennis Raider was caught and sadly when
1411. 58:53it was all over he'd be proven right
1412. 58:56there had been two more murders never
1413. 58:58before connected to BTK that brought the
1414. 59:01total number of his victims to 10 in
1415. 59:042004 Raider was still hiding evidence
1416. 59:07about his murder of marine hedge she
1417. 59:09lived on his block and they knew each
1418. 59:11other in court Raider described how
1419. 59:14after bowling one evening in
1420. 59:161985 he broke into her house and waited
1421. 59:18for her to come home and she screamed
1422. 59:21and I jumped on the bed and strangled
  1423. 59:23her
1424. 59:23manually rather than leaving her body
1425. 59:26Raider changed hiso confusing police at
1426. 59:29the time killed her in her house put her
1427. 59:32in the trunk of her car took her to his
1428. 59:35church put her on a blanket tied her up
1429. 59:38in different bonding situations took
1430. 59:41pictures of her then put her back uh in
1431. 59:44the trunk and took her out and dumped
1432. 59:45her it was the middle of the night he
1433. 59:47had a key because he was uh one of the
1434. 59:49uh leaders of the church marine hedge's
1435. 59:52body was later found buried under some
1436. 59:54leaves and branches in this ditch
1437. 59:57several miles from her home and even as
1438. 1:00:00his Persona BTK reemerged in 2004 Raider
1439. 1:00:05was also hiding evidence about his last
1440. 1:00:07victim Dolores Davis whom he killed in
1441. 1:00:101991 he'd seen her out in the yard
  1442. 1:00:13working and uh
1443. 1:00:16had sexual feelings her son Jeff talked
  1444. 1:00:20to us recently after viewing Raider's
1445. 1:00:22interview with the psychologist she was
  1446. 1:00:26a very kind
  1447. 1:00:28considerate empathetic
  1448. 1:00:31gentle person given the
1449. 1:00:35circumstances of her death I think she
1450. 1:00:40kept her class and her dignity and her
1451. 1:00:43Poise right up to the end all right so
1452. 1:00:46you used a concrete block to break the
1453. 1:00:48window in court Raider said he used a
1454. 1:00:50concrete block as a battering ram to
  1455. 1:00:53crash through Dolores Davis's lighting
1456. 1:00:54glass door and enter her home uh removed
1457. 1:00:57her handcuffs and uh and then tight her
1458. 1:01:00up and then and then eventually
1459. 1:01:03strangled her Raider then took her body
1460. 1:01:06from the house authorities knew only
1461. 1:01:08that she was missing probably kidnapped
1462. 1:01:11a best or dead at worst so that kind of
  1463. 1:01:15started the clock on a
  1464. 1:01:1813-day seemingly 13th century time frame
1465. 1:01:22where we didn't know what happened to
1466. 1:01:23her and that that is
1467. 1:01:26that is a trip to Hell 13 days later his
1468. 1:01:29mother's body was found under a bridge
1469. 1:01:32but of course police didn't know then
1470. 1:01:34who' done it Jeff Davis says he slipped
1471. 1:01:36into Despair and depression that
1472. 1:01:38destroyed his marriage and worse I would
1473. 1:01:41go to bed every night for the better
1474. 1:01:44part of 5 years and I prayed to God that
  1475. 1:01:47he'd let me
  1476. 1:01:49die Dolores Davis's driver's license and
1477. 1:01:52social security card had gone missing
1478. 1:01:55that was certainly the kind of thing BTK
1479. 1:01:57did to his murder victims but there were
1480. 1:02:00many other aspects of this crime that
1481. 1:02:02strayed from his usual so until Raider
1482. 1:02:05was caught and the police announced
1483. 1:02:06Dolores Davis as the 10th victim her son
1484. 1:02:10was left to wonder I guess there was the
1485. 1:02:13remote possibility that there was some
1486. 1:02:15Phantom seral out there but honestly I
  1487. 1:02:18never connected it with
1488. 1:02:20BTK how Dennis Raider LED police
1489. 1:02:22straight to his door he said we've got
1490. 1:02:25him confessions of BTK continues in a
1491. 1:02:29moment would he kill again that was the
1492. 1:02:32question consuming much of Witchita
1493. 1:02:34Kansas in the weeks after serial killer
  1494. 1:02:37BTK announced himself in 2004 following
1495. 1:02:40years of Silence I definitely lock my
1496. 1:02:42doors at night till I find out more here
1497. 1:02:44in the Heartland fear of the unknown
1498. 1:02:47monster among them penetrated yet a new
1499. 1:02:49generation my mom's going to watch out
1500. 1:02:51for my little sister more people were
1501. 1:02:53learning karate buying guns beefing up
1502. 1:02:56security systems and looking at
1503. 1:02:58strangers with a suspicion not felt in
1504. 1:03:00years in his jailhouse interview Raider
1505. 1:03:03now claims he didn't know he was having
  1506. 1:03:06this effect but I didn't realize the
1507. 1:03:09city really lived in fear that bad all I
1508. 1:03:12see little spurts of it on the news
1509. 1:03:14women come home and look under their
1510. 1:03:15doors and uh under their beds and just
  1511. 1:03:18Lally lived in fear I didn't realize
  1512. 1:03:20that I had that attention I Dro dropped
  1513. 1:03:23my jaw and I had a pad of paper and I
1514. 1:03:25made a note and I just scroll liar once
1515. 1:03:28again even with the Learned psychologist
  1516. 1:03:31there he's playing a game at the very
1517. 1:03:33least says criminologist James Fox
1518. 1:03:36Raider is being completely disingenuous
1519. 1:03:39he says for the serial killer the fear
1520. 1:03:41is all part of the Twisted fun part of
1521. 1:03:44the enjoyment that serial killers have
1522. 1:03:46is not just manipulating the victims
  1523. 1:03:49tying them up but manipulating a
1524. 1:03:52community and tying them up in a grip of
1525. 1:03:56Terror what's now known is that Raider
  1526. 1:03:58hadn't taken a life since
1527. 1:04:001991 his explanation to the psychologist
1528. 1:04:04about why he stopped at 10 victims is
1529. 1:04:07once again chillingly matter of fact why
1530. 1:04:10aren there more why AR there more it
1531. 1:04:12seemed like as I got older uh I started
  1532. 1:04:15making well physically I was just wasn't
1533. 1:04:18up to it um I knew like had fight with
1534. 1:04:21somebody you'd have to be an older
1535. 1:04:22person because just he just went into
1536. 1:04:25wouldn't be able to fight
  1537. 1:04:27physically uh I don't know uh I think it
1538. 1:04:31was just starting to mellow out a little
1539. 1:04:32bit Fox believes it's probably not just
  1540. 1:04:35coincidence that Raiders stopped
1541. 1:04:37committing murder around the time he got
1542. 1:04:39that job as a compliance officer now he
1543. 1:04:41really had some power now he could
1544. 1:04:43really push people around so he didn't
1545. 1:04:46have to do it with physical violence he
1546. 1:04:49could do it through his job the killer
1547. 1:04:51still lusted for notoriety however so
1548. 1:04:54after first revealing him self in that
1549. 1:04:56letter to the Witchita Eagle he sent a
1550. 1:04:58slew of letters and packages throughout
1551. 1:05:012004 and into early 2005 to local TV
1552. 1:05:05stations the police even leaving clues
1553. 1:05:07in a public park a doll with dark hair
1554. 1:05:10her face colored with makeup her arms
1555. 1:05:12bound behind her by a pair of panty hes
1556. 1:05:15her head contained in a plastic bag and
1557. 1:05:18next to the doll was a copy of the
1558. 1:05:19driver's license of one of btk's victims
  1559. 1:05:22Nancy Fox a handmade word puzzle
  1560. 1:05:26which investigators now see contains a
1561. 1:05:28group of letters spelling d Raider and
1562. 1:05:30the numbers of his address it all put
1563. 1:05:33witch's serial Strangler front and
1564. 1:05:35center again just how he liked it was
1565. 1:05:38that exciting to you was that sexually
1566. 1:05:40exciting to you probably the media not
1567. 1:05:43maybe sexually but the media attention
1568. 1:05:45you I listen to the news quite a bit and
1569. 1:05:47yeah I get I get pretty excited to read
1570. 1:05:49the paper did you ever think you were
1571. 1:05:50going to get caught no no no no no this
1572. 1:05:53guy was not going to get caught
  1573. 1:05:55absolutely not no I didn't want to get
1574. 1:05:57caught I wanted to put everything on
1575. 1:05:59floppies they would go to a floppy to a
1576. 1:06:01CD the CD would either go to safe
  1577. 1:06:03deposit or a very heighty hole and I
1578. 1:06:05could always bring it back out many have
  1579. 1:06:07speculated that Raiders repeated
1580. 1:06:09messages were indeed a cry to be
1581. 1:06:11captured but James fox says it's just
1582. 1:06:14the opposite he felt Invincible
  1583. 1:06:18Unstoppable and that's why many serial
1584. 1:06:20killers do communicate with the police
1585. 1:06:22not because they want to invite
1586. 1:06:24capture it's because they feel that the
1587. 1:06:27police are no match for their skill
  1588. 1:06:29their
  1589. 1:06:30cunning their stardom their
  1590. 1:06:33Brilliance
1591. 1:06:34so what often happens in among serial
1592. 1:06:37killers is they get so cocky and they
  1593. 1:06:39make a mistake and that's just what
1594. 1:06:41happened it was Raider himself who
1595. 1:06:43helped bring police to his door it
  1596. 1:06:46started in January 2005 when Raider
  1597. 1:06:49placed a letter in a pickup truck at
1598. 1:06:51this Home Depot which eventually made
1599. 1:06:53its way to police Raider identifying
1600. 1:06:57himself only as BTK asked the police
1601. 1:07:00whether they could catch him if he used
1602. 1:07:02a computer disc to communicate he asked
1603. 1:07:05the police to respond in a classified ad
1604. 1:07:08and he asked them to be honest he
1605. 1:07:11actually asked the police if they could
1606. 1:07:12catch you they said no they said no did
1607. 1:07:14you really think they were going to tell
1608. 1:07:16you the truth no I thought they would I
1609. 1:07:19I thought they wanted me to finish the
  1610. 1:07:21story I really thought I had a rapport
1611. 1:07:24with him you know and I really did I
  1612. 1:07:27mean doesn't that seem kind of
1613. 1:07:30dumb yeah it does to believe that the
1614. 1:07:33police would tell you the truth about
  1615. 1:07:35something like that I mean he's been
1616. 1:07:36playing games with us for 30 years and
  1617. 1:07:38you think we're not we're going to shoot
  1618. 1:07:39straight with you I don't think so so
1619. 1:07:41naturally the police lied and told the
  1620. 1:07:43killer they couldn't trace a disc to him
1621. 1:07:46and waited to see if he would fall for
  1622. 1:07:47it which he did Raider's last
  1623. 1:07:50communication was a computer disc filled
1624. 1:07:53with more taunts and puzzles he sent to
1625. 1:07:55a local television station the police
1626. 1:07:58were able to trace it to a Dennis and a
1627. 1:08:00computer at Raiders Church by Googling
1628. 1:08:03the church name and Dennis police
1629. 1:08:05quickly zeroed in on Dennis Raider what
1630. 1:08:08nailed him ultimately was the last
1631. 1:08:12floppy disc he said yeah well what
  1632. 1:08:14nailed him was his
1633. 1:08:15hubris uh he went too far felce also
1634. 1:08:19used a surveillance tape from that Home
1635. 1:08:20Depot to figure out that the person who
1636. 1:08:23dropped off the BTK letter was driving a
  1637. 1:08:26car registered to Dennis Raider's son
1638. 1:08:29but to make certain they had their man
1639. 1:08:31they needed a DNA match so authorities
  1640. 1:08:34got a warrant for a tissue sample from
1641. 1:08:36Raider's daughter on file at a Kansas
1642. 1:08:39Medical Clinic test showed it was a
1643. 1:08:41close match to the evidence drawn from
  1644. 1:08:43the crime
1645. 1:08:44scenes it was now early in the week of
  1646. 1:08:46February 21st 2005 and former police
1647. 1:08:50chief Richard Leman remembers quite well
1648. 1:08:53when he got the news he'd waited more
  1649. 1:08:55than 30 years to hear simply said we've
1650. 1:08:58got him he said it's just a matter of
  1651. 1:09:00time we've got
1652. 1:09:02him locked up and choked up that first
1653. 1:09:05Sunday was probably my lowest day of all
1654. 1:09:08my life tears from a killer but not for
1655. 1:09:11his victims when confessions of BTK
1656. 1:09:17continues Dennis Raider spent the
  1657. 1:09:19morning of February 25th 2005 on the job
1658. 1:09:23in Park City where is the town
  1659. 1:09:25compliance officer Raider was
1660. 1:09:27responsible for things like Carling Mad
1661. 1:09:29Dogs or chewing people out if their
1662. 1:09:32grass grew too high normal work day uh
  1663. 1:09:36didn't have any suspicions although I've
1664. 1:09:39been been really careful about watching
1665. 1:09:41people and actions and stuff uh I
1666. 1:09:43usually pretty good about that he says
1667. 1:09:45he noticed nothing unusual except maybe
1668. 1:09:48a moment when he overheard on his police
1669. 1:09:50radio the FBI was up to something in his
1670. 1:09:53town and I thought well know maybe
1671. 1:09:56something's coming down shall I run but
1672. 1:10:00where would I ran if they were after me
1673. 1:10:03I just took a calculated guess that that
1674. 1:10:05was something else and hope for then at
1675. 1:10:08midday the killer went home for lunch
1676. 1:10:11drove home and just as soon as I got
  1677. 1:10:13started turned down there's a frontage
1678. 1:10:15road I saw this whole line of police
1679. 1:10:17cars I thought oh that's not good and it
1680. 1:10:20was just they were right on me just that
  1681. 1:10:23quick I thought maybe maybe it's a
1682. 1:10:24traffic stop or something soon as I one
1683. 1:10:26them was behind me with the red lights
1684. 1:10:27and Sirens I knew that was it with that
1685. 1:10:30Dennis Lyn Raider the man believed to be
1686. 1:10:33BTK was finally in custody after 31
1687. 1:10:37years they arrested me they got out of
1688. 1:10:40the car they pulled the guns on me told
1689. 1:10:41me to lay down and I sprawled out and
1690. 1:10:44they grabbed me real quick like of
1691. 1:10:45handcuffs and stuck me in a car Mr raer
  1692. 1:10:48do you know why you're going downtown I
1693. 1:10:49said I have suspicions why at first uh I
  1694. 1:10:54was hoping
1695. 1:10:57it was kind of a kind of a cat and mouse
1696. 1:10:59game uh that they had a suspect but but
1697. 1:11:04it but but kind of hurt you know you
1698. 1:11:06know like you said I had the power you
  1699. 1:11:08know I was a law enforcement officer
1700. 1:11:09technically and here I am these law
1701. 1:11:12enforcement officers are trying to do
1702. 1:11:13their to my duty that kind of hurt a
1703. 1:11:15little bit but before long Raider in his
  1704. 1:11:18self-obsessed arrogance was talking up a
1705. 1:11:20storm and says in this interview with
1706. 1:11:22the psychologist he actually was having
1707. 1:11:24a good time connecting to the police
1708. 1:11:27officers also during the interrogation
1709. 1:11:29it seems as though you were
1710. 1:11:32enjoying being one of them at times it's
1711. 1:11:36almost like colleagues Talk Shop
1712. 1:11:38camaraderie comaraderie you know yeah we
1713. 1:11:41talk shop uh I know a lot of police
1714. 1:11:43terminology I know how they do things so
  1715. 1:11:46yeah it's kind of a bonding type thing
1716. 1:11:48you talk you enjoy it on any level uh
1717. 1:11:51yes I did yeah all I knew was sunk or
1718. 1:11:55soon would be but yeah I enjoyed it and
1719. 1:11:57and once uh once the confession was out
1720. 1:11:59and I admitted who I was then then the
1721. 1:12:01bonding really started you know I just
1722. 1:12:04really opened up and you know we shared
1723. 1:12:07jokes and everything else it's just like
1724. 1:12:09we were buddies he's proud of what he
1725. 1:12:11done uh he was having in a perverse way
1726. 1:12:15fun talking with his uh his colleagues
1727. 1:12:18the police what do you make of the
1728. 1:12:20camaraderie he says he enjoyed with all
1729. 1:12:23of the police officers who were
1730. 1:12:24interrogating him when he was arrested
1731. 1:12:27well it it implies a certain degree of
1732. 1:12:30um of of control here on the situation
  1733. 1:12:33I'm a good guy they're a good guy we're
1734. 1:12:34all the same profession here I work law
  1735. 1:12:36enforcement technically and he was a
1736. 1:12:38want toe cop it makes him feel better to
1737. 1:12:40to think of them as peers but however
1738. 1:12:42much Raider may have imagined he was
1739. 1:12:44still in control the reality was just
1740. 1:12:47the opposite Richard Leman who once
1741. 1:12:49headed up the department Raider
1742. 1:12:51dismisses as the Keystone Cops says the
1743. 1:12:54script was going very way now were they
1744. 1:12:57in fact playing him absolutely these
1745. 1:12:59these officers that were interviewing
1746. 1:13:01him were handpicked they had studied him
1747. 1:13:04they knew the characteristics they were
1748. 1:13:06playing to his ego to his strength they
1749. 1:13:08were bringing him up making him think
1750. 1:13:10that you know hey we're buddy buddies
1751. 1:13:13then just as quickly they shut him down
1752. 1:13:15the interview ended the attention
1753. 1:13:17stopped and the officers went home it
1754. 1:13:20was only then Raider tells the
1755. 1:13:22psychologist that the reality of his
1756. 1:13:24past and the impact on his future
1757. 1:13:27finally started to sink in was there any
1758. 1:13:30way of of getting out of this you know
1759. 1:13:33is there any possible way and I thought
1760. 1:13:35no there is any way they just got too
1761. 1:13:37much on me and then most of my thoughts
1762. 1:13:39went back to my family you know how my
1763. 1:13:41family was holding up how are they
1764. 1:13:42taking this I was the main thing just
  1765. 1:13:45you know you're you're caught carinated
1766. 1:13:47and all those things that you
1767. 1:13:50enjoyed you they're gone you know you
1768. 1:13:52just just you know you have to be in the
  1769. 1:13:54POS position to realize it I don't think
1770. 1:13:57normal people are outside in the world
1771. 1:13:59can visualize that you know just like
1772. 1:14:02right now you know you just you know
1773. 1:14:04touch people and hold them
1774. 1:14:07and you know your kids and
  1775. 1:14:11stuff sorry let
1776. 1:14:14gone this was one of the few moments
1777. 1:14:16during the interview where Raider
1778. 1:14:18revealed any emotion when he was talking
1779. 1:14:20about himself and his family well anyway
1780. 1:14:24uh you know people don't realize that uh
  1781. 1:14:28you know once you're gone you can't go
1782. 1:14:30out uh out in fresh air walk your dog
1783. 1:14:34hug your wife kiss your
1784. 1:14:36wife you know go to a movie have a pizza
  1785. 1:14:40hamburger it's all gone it's all about
  1786. 1:14:42him when you watch
1787. 1:14:44him do you feel anything you feel pain
1788. 1:14:49cuz every time I see him I see all of
1789. 1:14:52those victims and the tortured looks on
1790. 1:14:54their faces from all the crime scenes
1791. 1:14:55and what he actually did he left that
1792. 1:14:58part out he never mentioned him instead
1793. 1:15:01all Raider could do was complain to the
1794. 1:15:04psychologist about how he missed all the
  1795. 1:15:06attention he'd been receiving from his
1796. 1:15:08police interrogators he did not come
  1797. 1:15:11Saturday it's probably that that first
1798. 1:15:14Sunday was probably my lowest day of all
1799. 1:15:16my life I was really depressed he called
1800. 1:15:19it the lowest day of his life can you
  1801. 1:15:22imagine this is a man who's already been
  1802. 1:15:23arrested he's from his family probably
1803. 1:15:26forever they despise him oh by the way
1804. 1:15:28he's killed 10 people and the lowest day
1805. 1:15:31of his life is when the interrogation
  1806. 1:15:32doesn't continue doesn't this tell us a
1807. 1:15:34lot about about Dennis Raider and next
1808. 1:15:38the killer gets his day in court will
1809. 1:15:40heartbroken families get peace people
1810. 1:15:43use the word closure there is no such
1811. 1:15:44thing when confessions of BTK
1812. 1:15:48continues the bottom line BTK is
1813. 1:15:53arrested well while Dennis Raiders sat
1814. 1:15:56in his cell with no one to satisfy his
1815. 1:15:58desire to keep talking about himself the
1816. 1:16:01police and a cast of dozens proudly
1817. 1:16:03announced his capture to the citizens of
1818. 1:16:05Witchita and the world Agents from the
1819. 1:16:09kbi agents from the FBI and members of
1820. 1:16:12the witch toop Police Department
  1821. 1:16:14arrested Dennis
  1822. 1:16:16Raider 59 and a white male but it wasn't
1823. 1:16:20until late June when Raider appeared in
1824. 1:16:23court for what was supposed to be the
1825. 1:16:24first day of his trial that people got a
1826. 1:16:27good look at and earful from the man who
1827. 1:16:29had killed so many people over so many
1828. 1:16:32years instead of maintaining the not
  1829. 1:16:35guilty plea he'd entered earlier there
1830. 1:16:37was a surprise Mr Rider would you please
  1831. 1:16:40stand with
1832. 1:16:44coun sir I have been advised it is your
1833. 1:16:47desire to enter a plea of guilty in this
1834. 1:16:50case is that correct yes sir people in
1835. 1:16:53and out of court listened a g to Raider
1836. 1:16:56as he detailed each murder in his cold
  1837. 1:16:58chilling emotionless manner I manually
1838. 1:17:01strangled her when she started to scream
  1839. 1:17:03Ron loen watched Raider's court
1840. 1:17:05appearance on TV people make a lot of
1841. 1:17:07the point that he didn't show any
1842. 1:17:08emotion he was showing incredible
1843. 1:17:10emotion uh the detail that he used he
1844. 1:17:14paused and he'd search for Words uh the
1845. 1:17:17graphic graphic description that he gave
  1846. 1:17:19this wasn't someone who was stumbling
1847. 1:17:21who was uh nervous this was Showtime for
  1848. 1:17:25him uh he couldn't have asked for a
1849. 1:17:27better stage the killer was clearly
1850. 1:17:29puffed up by his court appearance
1851. 1:17:32bragging about it afterward when he
  1852. 1:17:33spoke with the psychologist it's only
1853. 1:17:35been a few hours since that hearing how
1854. 1:17:37you feeling I really feel pretty good
1855. 1:17:39it's kind of like a big burden that was
  1856. 1:17:40lefted off my
  1857. 1:17:41shoulders
1858. 1:17:43um and on the other hand I feel like I'm
1859. 1:17:46like a star right now as you might
  1860. 1:17:48expect a certain former police chief
1861. 1:17:50would love to lower the curtain on
1862. 1:17:52Dennis Raider right now I'd like to be
1863. 1:17:55the one to be able to put him in a cell
  1864. 1:17:56and turn his lights out that's what I'd
1865. 1:17:58like to do so how does someone like
1866. 1:18:00Dennis Raider get to be this way well
  1867. 1:18:02that's the 64,000 question that we don't
1868. 1:18:04completely know part of it is the
  1869. 1:18:06propensities that you're born with and
1870. 1:18:08part of it too is is what kind of
  1871. 1:18:10environment you're growing into these
1872. 1:18:12are all the the intangibles that we
  1873. 1:18:14can't predict and don't fully understand
  1874. 1:18:17Raider told the psychologist he'll make
1875. 1:18:19amends in his way to his God I know it's
1876. 1:18:22personal but could you tell me what you
  1877. 1:18:24pray for
1878. 1:18:27actually uh like for the other day I
1879. 1:18:30prayed for that the family would accept
1880. 1:18:33me on uh there in the
1881. 1:18:36court that they would you know you know
1882. 1:18:38accept that as forgiveness your F whose
  1883. 1:18:41family my
1884. 1:18:43family and also I mentioned there the
1885. 1:18:46victim families that they would you know
1886. 1:18:48not they can forgive me but maybe
1887. 1:18:50someday they can realize you know I got
  1888. 1:18:53some problems oh
  1889. 1:18:56yeah there's the classic understatement
1890. 1:18:57of the world we asked Jeff Davis the son
1891. 1:19:00of Raiders last victim what he thought
1892. 1:19:02about that he does have problems all of
1893. 1:19:05which are of his own
1894. 1:19:06making he did not come from any abused
  1895. 1:19:09family he can't blame any environmental
1896. 1:19:11factors he can't blame anybody or any
1897. 1:19:13sickness or being dropped on his head
1898. 1:19:16wish they dropped him a little harder he
1899. 1:19:18can't blame anything Davis who like so
1900. 1:19:21many other family members is also a
1901. 1:19:24victim of being etk wrote a book to help
1902. 1:19:26him and others cope with the trauma of
1903. 1:19:29loss and to make sure people knew how
1904. 1:19:31special his mother Dolores was I would
1905. 1:19:34be damned if her Legacy ended with her
  1906. 1:19:38being murdered a beautiful loving
  1907. 1:19:43kind gentle
1908. 1:19:45person and her Legacy is being murdered
1909. 1:19:49and dumped out in the ditch like a bag
1910. 1:19:51of dirty laundry for the dogs to go
1911. 1:19:53through and I was not going to let that
  1912. 1:19:55happen just after Davis's book was
  1913. 1:19:57published in
  1914. 1:19:591996 he received a letter from a
1915. 1:20:01taxpayer who Davis now firmly believes
1916. 1:20:04was Dennis Raider it has never before
1917. 1:20:06been made public the letter said we'll
1918. 1:20:09call the serial killer The Phantom of
1919. 1:20:12Northern Sedwick County which is where
1920. 1:20:14Raider lived it also said I'm sure that
  1921. 1:20:18he probably Blends in with a crowd I'm
1922. 1:20:21Jeffrey Davis son of Dolores Davis at
1923. 1:20:24Raider sentencing Davis was able to
1924. 1:20:27speak directly to the killer for the
  1925. 1:20:29last
1926. 1:20:305,326 days I have wondered what it would
1927. 1:20:32be like to confront the walking
  1928. 1:20:34Cesspool that took my mother's precious
1929. 1:20:37life even if you could begin to Fathom
1930. 1:20:39the depth of my hatred for you I would
1931. 1:20:41still refuse to waste any breath on you
1932. 1:20:43because that would once again allow you
1933. 1:20:45the satisfaction of being in the
1934. 1:20:46Limelight and that attention I refuse to
1935. 1:20:48allow you as of today you no longer
1936. 1:20:51exist Charlie ooto and his sister Carmen
  1937. 1:20:54spoke too
1938. 1:20:55Raider you not only affected my life but
1939. 1:20:57you took away the joy of the ultimate
1940. 1:20:58grandparents aunt and uncle relationship
  1941. 1:21:00my children deserve just recently I
1942. 1:21:03realized that I could not remember my
  1943. 1:21:05mother's voice it was a painful
1944. 1:21:07Discovery but as I put my thoughts on
1945. 1:21:09paper it comes to me I am my mother's
  1946. 1:21:12voice and I know we've been heard family
1947. 1:21:15members of other victims gave their
1948. 1:21:17thoughts on the day he dies Nancy and
1949. 1:21:20all of his victims will be waiting with
1950. 1:21:23God and watching him as he burns in
1951. 1:21:27hell when it was time for Raider to
1952. 1:21:29speak to the court he characteristically
  1953. 1:21:32showed little emotion now that I've
1954. 1:21:35confessed put myself out to let
  1955. 1:21:37everybody know what's going on I expect
1956. 1:21:40to heal and have life and then hopefully
1957. 1:21:44someday God will accept me and finally I
  1958. 1:21:47final apologize to the victim's
  1959. 1:21:50families there's no
1960. 1:21:52way that I can repay the murders were
1961. 1:21:56committed before Kansas reinstated the
1962. 1:21:58death penalty when it came time to
1963. 1:22:00sentence Raider the judge showed no
1964. 1:22:03mercy giving him the maximum sense to
1965. 1:22:06serve a term of life for which you will
1966. 1:22:08not be proo eligible until the
1967. 1:22:10expiration of 40 years Jeff Davis says
1968. 1:22:13even though he was finally able to
1969. 1:22:15confront the killer of his mother he is
1970. 1:22:18left feeling empty people use the word
1971. 1:22:20closure there is no such thing closure
1972. 1:22:23happens when you go back that moment in
1973. 1:22:26time and it doesn't happen and the
1974. 1:22:27person's still there Charlie Otero who
1975. 1:22:30also faced a hard life after the murder
1976. 1:22:32of his parents sister and brother knows
1977. 1:22:35what Davis means I would wonder about
1978. 1:22:38what they were thinking and the feelings
1979. 1:22:40that they had while this was happening
1980. 1:22:42to them you know this has been the most
1981. 1:22:43intense and challenging my family Mur
1982. 1:22:46with me daily en it never leaves me the
1983. 1:22:48memories of my family come back to me
1984. 1:22:50whenever I see a husband hug his wife or
1985. 1:22:54a father and a son play I think of my
1986. 1:22:56family and what I had lost for so long
1987. 1:23:00Charlie Otero Jeff Davis and so many
1988. 1:23:02others have wanted to know why why their
1989. 1:23:05loved ones were victims and now they
1990. 1:23:08know it was one man's inability to
  1991. 1:23:10control his sexual fantasies one man's
1992. 1:23:13depraved indifference to human life and
  1993. 1:23:16terrible coincidence for 10 innocent
1994. 1:23:18people who were caught in Dennis
  1995. 1:23:20Raider's murderous web I keep seeing
1996. 1:23:24these Vic I keep seeing these people
1997. 1:23:26that he tortured and murdered and killed
1998. 1:23:29and and I just look at him in wonderment
1999. 1:23:34thinking how can someone just stand
2000. 1:23:36there and talk like we just had lunch
