  1. 0:01Did you know that you and your computer
  2. 0:02speak different languages? It doesn't
  3. 0:05speak Spanish or Swedish or Chinese.
  4. 0:10It speaks in ones and zeros.
  5. 0:13You can't communicate directly with your
  6. 0:14computer, but that's where your
  7. 0:16operating system comes in. The operating
  8. 0:19system or OS is the program that lets
  9. 0:22you interact with your computer.
  10. 0:25Together, the operating system and
  11. 0:27computer hardware form a complete system
  12. 0:29that determines what your computer can
  13. 0:31do.
  14. 0:32There are many different operating
  15. 0:34systems. Two of the most common ones are
  16. 0:36Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.
  17. 0:40Windows comes preloaded on most personal
  18. 0:42computers, while Mac OS runs on all new
  19. 0:45Macs.
  20. 0:47Operating systems aren't just for
  21. 0:49desktop and laptop computers. Mobile
  22. 0:52devices run mobile operating systems
  23. 0:54like Apple iOS or Google Android, which
  24. 0:57are designed for interactions with
  25. 0:59smaller touch screens.
  26. 1:02Before downloading a new program or
  27. 1:04application, be aware that it may not be
  28. 1:06available for your operating system.
  29. 1:09Some applications work on all devices,
  30. 1:12while others only work on certain ones.
  31. 1:15So, get to know your operating system to
  32. 1:17see how it works and what it can do.
