- 0:00you may already know that there are many
- 0:02important parts inside a computer
- 0:04but what exactly do they do let's take a
- 0:07look inside and learn about the various
- 0:09components that make a computer work
- 0:12whether it's a desktop computer or a
- 0:15laptop every computer has a large
- 0:17circuit board
- 0:18called a motherboard this contains some
- 0:21of the most important parts of the
- 0:22computer
- 0:24such as the cpu also known as the
- 0:26central processing unit
- 0:27or processor the cpu can be considered
- 0:31the brain
- 0:31of the computer because it processes
- 0:33information and carries out commands
- 0:36since it tends to get hot it's covered
- 0:38by a piece of metal called a heat sink
- 0:41which draws heat away from the processor
- 0:44the motherboard also contains the
- 0:46computer's ram or random access memory
- 0:50this is the short term memory that the
- 0:52computer uses whenever it's performing
- 0:54calculations
- 0:55however you cannot store your files
- 0:57there because the ram is cleared when
- 1:00you shut off the computer
- 1:02the hard drive provides long term
- 1:04storage keeping
- 1:06all of the computers data even when it's
- 1:08turned off
- 1:09many hard drives use a magnetic platter
- 1:12to store data
- 1:13but many newer computers have solid
- 1:15state drives
- 1:16which are faster and more durable but
- 1:18also more expensive
- 1:21on many desktop computers the
- 1:23motherboard has expansion slots that
- 1:26allow you to upgrade by adding expansion
- 1:28cards
- 1:29you can add a video card to get better
- 1:31graphics performance
- 1:32or you can add a wireless card to
- 1:34connect to your wireless home network
- 1:37most laptops however don't have
- 1:39expansion slots
- 1:41of course the computer's components need
- 1:43electricity to run
- 1:45the power supply unit is designed to
- 1:47take power from the wall outlet
- 1:48and send it to all of the different
- 1:50components that need power
- 1:52laptops also contain a built-in battery
- 1:55that lets you use them anywhere
- 1:57a computer is a pretty complex machine
- 2:00but now that you've seen what goes on
- 2:02inside
- 2:02it should be a little less mysterious
- 2:10gcf global creating opportunities for a
- 2:13better life
