- 0:01garnered national attention but started
- 0:03right here in Alabama after Anthony ray
- 0:05Hinton spent 30 years in prison for the
- 0:08killing of two men in Birmingham but it
- 0:10was later determined that there was no
- 0:12evidence connecting him to that crime at
- 0:13all now that he's freed we're asking the
- 0:16question why hasn't Hinton received
- 0:18compensation from the state of Alabama
- 0:20for his wrongful conviction state
- 0:22capitol reporter Rashad Hudson tonight
- 0:24spoke with lawmakers on where they stand
- 0:29Anthony ray Hinton was one of Alabama's
- 0:31longest serving death row inmates he's
- 0:34now a free man due to an overturned
- 0:35conviction he's asking the state for
- 0:38compensation but some lawmakers view
- 0:40that as a tall order every day I think
- 0:43about where I was for the last 30 years
- 0:46Aaron URL alongside Bryan Stevenson with
- 0:50the equal justice initiative helped to
- 0:52get Hinton's conviction overturned they
- 0:54sat at trial and have said consistently
- 0:56since then that without that match
- 0:58there's no evidence can I do mr. hands
- 1:02in these crimes and after 30 years
- 1:03Hinton is a free man I had prayed hope
- 1:07that will come and the moment that he
- 1:09did the day I walked out on the
- 1:12Birmingham County Jail the Sun was
- 1:14shining brighter than I ever seen this
- 1:16on Shane
- 1:18last year proposal to give Hinton 1.5
- 1:20million dollars was met with mixed
- 1:22reaction among lawmakers and the Alabama
- 1:25Senate State Senator Claude chainless
- 1:38says he believes the proposal stalled
- 1:40because lawmakers didn't have enough
- 1:42facts from both sides but Eurail is
- 1:44hoping the state of Alabama will do the
- 1:46right thing it's important for all of us
- 1:49to know that we have a system that is
- 1:52fair and is responsible when it makes
- 1:55mistakes
- 1:56and as for Hinton he says he's not
- 1:58bitter you give the people that did this
- 2:02on purpose you give them too much power
- 2:05when you allow bill Enosh to follow you
- 2:08senator Clark chainless says this is
- 2:10something that the legislature could
- 2:12take up neck
