- 0:00How does a fish bite the bait even with
- 0:02the hook showing? If you drop a bare
- 0:05hook in the water, the fish comes near,
- 0:06looks, and swims away. So, you hide the
- 0:09hook inside a worm. That is the bait.
- 0:12But the lake is huge and the fish is
- 0:14far away. However, fish have nostrils.
- 0:16They aren't for breathing, just for
- 0:18smelling. So you throw feed in the same
- 0:20spot, and the scent brings in the
- 0:22school. That is chumming. But it rained
- 0:24and the water turned coffee-colored.
- 0:27The fish can't see a few inches ahead.
- 0:29So you use a lure that vibrates when
- 0:31you pull it. The fish senses the
- 0:33vibration through a row of sensors on
- 0:35its body. That is the lateral line.
- 0:37That's why fishermen tread lightly. The
- 0:39fish can feel your footsteps. But in
- 0:42clear water, the fish sees everything,
- 0:44even your line. So you use a line that
- 0:46bends light almost like water does.
- 0:48Down there, it almost disappears.
- 0:51That's a fluorocarbon line, but your
- 0:53bait is red, and a few meters down it
- 0:55turns gray. Underwater, red is the
- 0:58first color to disappear. So in clear
- 1:01water, you use baitfish colors, silver
- 1:04and green. In dark water, black or
- 1:07lemon yellow, which stand out in the
- 1:09murk. That is contrast. But the fish
- 1:12looks at the bait and swims right past
- 1:13it. It's because every fish has a
- 1:15specific menu. Tilapia likes dough.
- 1:17Pacu loves fruit. And the trahira is a
- 1:20hunter; it only attacks what moves. So
- 1:23for it, you use a plastic fish that you
- 1:24retrieve with a wiggling motion. That
- 1:27is an artificial lure. But the bait is
- 1:29in the surface water, which is too hot,
- 1:31and no one bites. Fish are cold-blooded
- 1:33. Their body temperature matches the
- 1:35water. In summer, the sun heats up the
- 1:38surface water. The water below stays
- 1:40cold. And in the middle, the
- 1:41temperature drops sharply. That is the
- 1:44thermocline. The fish stays just above
- 1:46it. It's cool there and has oxygen.
- 1:48Below, there is no air. So you move
- 1:50your bobber up the line until the bait
- 1:52is at that depth. In the cold, it's the
- 1:55opposite. The fish gets sluggish like
- 1:57you under a blanket and heads to the
- 1:58bottom. So the bait goes to the bottom
- 2:01very slowly. But at noon with the sun
- 2:03overhead, the fish sees everything and
- 2:04gets suspicious. So you fish early in
- 2:07the morning or late in the afternoon in
- 2:08dim light. That is why fishermen wake
- 2:10up before the rooster. And about the
- 2:13hook showing? The fish has never seen a
- 2:14hook in its life. He sees food moving
- 2:17and snaps it up in less than a second,
- 2:19but he feels the hard tip and spits it
- 2:21out. Then you give a short, quick tug
- 2:23that sinks the hook into its mouth.
- 2:25That’s the hook-set. That’s why at
- 2:28the fishing pond, the big fish are the
- 2:29hardest to catch. They’ve already
- 2:31been hooked and have learned. On the
- 2:32outside, it’s just a worm hanging on
- 2:34a hook. On the inside, it’s scent,
- 2:37vibration, color, temperature, and a
- 2:39fisherman who wakes up before the
- 2:40rooster. What everyday thing should we
