  1. 0:01Megan and Matt's old story book
  2. 0:03Victorian home should be the perfect
  3. 0:05setting for a winter holiday gathering
  4. 0:08that is if we can give their living room
  5. 0:10a festive makeover before the guests
  6. 0:14[Music]
  7. 0:25arrive well we got set up on a blind
  8. 0:27date and um that's pretty much it but
  9. 0:31I'm 5'1 what are you 6 63 63 yeah I'm
  10. 0:34little yeah but uh you know we make it
  11. 0:38work it's going to be our first major
  12. 0:41holiday in this house and we've invited
  13. 0:42both of our families and we're hosting
  14. 0:44them all here we really want to impress
  15. 0:47our families and knock their socks off
  16. 0:48but I also get really overwhelmed I love
  17. 0:51things to be really sort of bold and
  18. 0:53Rich like you've mentioned you know like
  19. 0:55Evergreen Mist I don't really know what
  20. 0:57that is and I can't really I know but
  21. 1:00right off the bat I don't want it but
  22. 1:02maybe if I saw it I might like it maybe
  23. 1:05maybe maybe yeah but we would never try
  24. 1:07it no which is sort of why we need
  25. 1:09Jane's help because if if if we were
  26. 1:11left to do it ourselves we would just
  27. 1:13probably vacuum in the room and that's
  28. 1:15about it I would vacuum the room well I
  29. 1:17yeah you would vacuum the room and I
  30. 1:19would well Jane here's our our living
  31. 1:23room wow okay I am so blown away by this
  32. 1:26house it is gorgeous so when did you say
  33. 1:29it was built 1880 wow it's
  34. 1:32spectacular other than the very pale
  35. 1:35whsh shiny high gloss walls and because
  36. 1:39of white you really don't see all the
  37. 1:41details it's true I would love it to
  38. 1:43stand out okay so we're going to use
  39. 1:45color to help do that then I noticed
  40. 1:47that there's a wall here right in the
  41. 1:49middle sort of dividing up the room let
  42. 1:51me just have a little look see ooh yes
  43. 1:55it's like a little Panic Room a little
  44. 1:58it's a little dark and scary
  45. 2:00ideally we both like to lose it so if we
  46. 2:02could double really the space in here
  47. 2:03it' be great okay I kind of want to get
  48. 2:05a sense what you want to keep what you
  49. 2:07want to do in this room me some
  50. 2:09beautiful Victorian furniture the
  51. 2:11Victorian style furniture is mine that I
  52. 2:13inherited from my family and I really
  53. 2:15love it and then on this side we have
  54. 2:18our more modern pieces I sort of
  55. 2:20inherited those pieces you know garage
  56. 2:22sales estate sales the Cur on the curb
  57. 2:26all right and do you think it's possible
  58. 2:27to meld your two Styles modern with the
  59. 2:30traditional I think there's room for
  60. 2:33negotiation mhm I think it's going to
  61. 2:35look good as long as you're okay with
  62. 2:37adding color to this
  63. 2:39room like right now this is kind of I'm
  64. 2:41fine like you know maybe just do some
  65. 2:43patching and I am not fine okay so we
  66. 2:46just have to work on visualization which
  67. 2:48we'll do no problem I think that's
  68. 2:49probably why you know one of your great
  69. 2:52strengths is that you can mediate
  70. 2:55immediate Let's us familiarize yourself
  71. 2:58with this wall here this whole whole
  72. 3:00thing is going to come out because it
  73. 3:01divides up this room terribly I think
  74. 3:04this one's dry well and uh should be
  75. 3:06okay to take out without damage to
  76. 3:08anyone crossing my fingers we're going
  77. 3:10to keep the furniture change the
  78. 3:12upholstery okay those are going to go to
  79. 3:14and get redone they're kind of cool
  80. 3:16chairs we're going to meld them make
  81. 3:17them meld meld meld blend blend blend do
  82. 3:21you think you need to be writing any of
  83. 3:22this down at all no it's all up here
  84. 3:24right okay then well I'll give you the
  85. 3:27list later I'll give you the gloves I'll
  86. 3:29get my gloves you take the gloves I have
  87. 3:31other things to do I don't need gloves
  88. 3:33for that okay color choices
  89. 3:36CIA Dave Dave that's SM
  90. 3:42fun hang on hang on hang on uh-oh is
  91. 3:45this the right wall I hope so 1 2
  92. 3:503 how much destruction can possibly be
  93. 3:54going on what guy doesn't love demo it's
  94. 3:56a good change normally we're try to make
  95. 3:58things look pretty
  96. 4:01since this house is a Victorian home
  97. 4:04well what do you expect of course the
  98. 4:06color wheel is going to be all about the
  99. 4:07Victorian era now the things that really
  100. 4:10relate to Victorian times would be lace
  101. 4:12delicate Furniture brought from afar
  102. 4:14silks from the Orient teacups rather
  103. 4:16proper and along with that a really
  104. 4:18really dark color palette oh you're
  105. 4:21scared now I don't know I just don't
  106. 4:22even know what Victorian colors look
  107. 4:24like oh that looks
  108. 4:27beautiful Victorian h holiday looks like
  109. 4:31oo it is all the Traditions that went
  110. 4:34along with the Victorian time and I
  111. 4:36think it's really cool cuz we're going
  112. 4:38to pick our colors from this so are you
  113. 4:40excited yes I am I'm a little
  114. 4:43overwhelmed I love them all I like the
  115. 4:47off-white just really put that out there
  116. 4:50why do you like that just tell me what
  117. 4:51you like about it does sort of remind me
  118. 4:53of the snow and clouds and not just cuz
  119. 4:57it's white sort of reminds me you know a
  120. 5:00peaceful peaceful kind of color Meg I
  121. 5:03really love this navy blue it seems like
  122. 5:05a really classic color but also very
  123. 5:08bold and Rich it's like the ocean like
  124. 5:10sailing I'm kind of drawn to the stove
  125. 5:14when I was in Scotland all the old
  126. 5:16buildings s of were covered in kind of
  127. 5:17like a soot kind of dirty kind of
  128. 5:20classic industrial yeah interesting
  129. 5:23Association it's also a very strong
  130. 5:25color of fireplaces and cooking bread
  131. 5:28that's got a nice conation to avoid warm
  132. 5:32and comfortable so if we go from our
  133. 5:35color wheel back into your parlor and we
  134. 5:38start thinking about what color we want
  135. 5:39to put on the wall we want to think
  136. 5:41about the floor it's that lovely aged
  137. 5:43hundred-year-old Pine so whatever color
  138. 5:45we pick we want to make sure that
  139. 5:46enhances the floor so Matt if we go to
  140. 5:48your first color Choice which was the
  141. 5:51white of the pram it's a little
  142. 5:55different than what was on the wall but
  143. 5:57not massively very modern color and anti
  144. 6:00Victorian yeah we want to try to be
  145. 6:04somewhat adventurous we can skip that
  146. 6:06one yeah you might like the color but I
  147. 6:08don't think that's going to go with the
  148. 6:10vision that we that we have so if we go
  149. 6:12over here to the navy blue um The
  150. 6:14Nutcracker not only has a classic tone
  151. 6:17to it it can have quite a bit of color
  152. 6:19even if it's a dark color so it's got
  153. 6:21the richness to it and what's
  154. 6:22interesting about this blue is that it
  155. 6:24is opposite the color of your floor now
  156. 6:27when colors are opposite on the color
  157. 6:28wheel they're called comp elements they
  158. 6:30intensify each other so the blue makes
  159. 6:32the orange of the floor orer and vice
  160. 6:34versa so you're going to get lots of
  161. 6:36energy and it is definitely a more
  162. 6:38traditional color would have been very
  163. 6:39much a w color used by victorians if we
  164. 6:42have a look at this one here the gray
  165. 6:44black are stoves it is that sort of
  166. 6:46classic color that we think about as a
  167. 6:48tuxedo color it's a little bit more
  168. 6:51neutral than the blue although both are
  169. 6:52considered neutrals and again still
  170. 6:54opposite on the color whe to the floor
  171. 6:56so you're still going to get that nice
  172. 6:57richness but it's got a little less
  173. 6:59color to it if you will
  174. 7:02MH so okay since we've already ruled out
  175. 7:05sort of the very pale pale yellow white
  176. 7:08between the two of them which one do you
  177. 7:10think you'd be more comfortable with on
  178. 7:11the
  179. 7:13wall um I'm still kind of upset that I
  180. 7:16didn't get to pick the Prem yeah that
  181. 7:18would have been a deal Breer yeah
  182. 7:21[Music]
  183. 7:38it's going to be our first major holiday
  184. 7:39in this house and we've invited both of
  185. 7:41our families and we're hosting them all
  186. 7:43here love the room we're doing beautiful
  187. 7:46Victorian details it's in need of some
  188. 7:49love o I don't know I think we might
  189. 7:52have bitten off a little more than we
  190. 7:53can shoose what a great couple Matt and
  191. 7:56Meg are they have this wonderful Dynamic
  192. 7:58you are you're moous you enjoy life
  193. 8:01you're joyous I'm enthusiastic opposites
  194. 8:04they do say attract except for
  195. 8:06occasionally around the color wheel so
  196. 8:09it's now time after 100 Years of white
  197. 8:11in this house to decide what color you
  198. 8:14want to paint the walls still no way no
  199. 8:17pram no pram no s okay then so if we go
  200. 8:20over here to the navy blue of The
  201. 8:21Nutcracker or gray like a charcoal gray
  202. 8:24which one do you think you'd be more
  203. 8:25comfortable with on the
  204. 8:27wall for me
  205. 8:30I'm not keen on the navy blue just cuz
  206. 8:32it seems to be too much of a color I
  207. 8:36didn't really like that so I got to sort
  208. 8:38of go with the gray because it seems
  209. 8:41more neutral and kind of a a non-color
  210. 8:44color mhm Megan what do you think well I
  211. 8:47am thrilled with gray because to me that
  212. 8:49is exciting even though I love the blue
  213. 8:52I think that might be too much for you
  214. 8:54and I am very happy with the gray and
  215. 8:57very proud of you wow so it sounds to me
  216. 9:00like that's what you both agree on yeah
  217. 9:03perfect mediation very niceo you made it
  218. 9:14[Music]
  219. 9:16intense it's all bold from here but
  220. 9:18smaller unless the pram can come back
  221. 9:20you made the big decision that's going
  222. 9:21on the walls there's a lot of
  223. 9:24walls I don't know if uh this being the
  224. 9:27season uh
  225. 9:30you know there's snow outside is is gray
  226. 9:32the color well it certainly matches the
  227. 9:35weather I suppose but not my festive
  228. 9:37feel so that's okay this is just the
  229. 9:39background it's a perfect neutral
  230. 9:41background so that everything we put in
  231. 9:43front of it is going to Sparkle in
  232. 9:45Victorian times it was very common to
  233. 9:48paint or wallpaper spaces in dark colors
  234. 9:50now they also happen to do their
  235. 9:52ceilings and their trim work also in
  236. 9:54dark colors now for us because we're
  237. 9:56clearly living in modern times we're
  238. 9:58going to create some cont by leaving our
  239. 10:00baseboard and our beautiful crown in a
  240. 10:02light color is what's going to take a
  241. 10:04traditional space like this and push it
  242. 10:06into a modern
  243. 10:08Century I'd say the ceiling might be a
  244. 10:11terrifying thing for the second color
  245. 10:14choice I don't know oh I love painted
  246. 10:16ceilings really okay so the first one's
  247. 10:19gone well the color of the stove it's
  248. 10:21quite neutral but gives us some
  249. 10:22opportunity I think to add some more
  250. 10:24color looking at your home you guys have
  251. 10:26the greatest features by having the
  252. 10:29Medallion in the ceiling the beautiful
  253. 10:30crown molding so I really feel we need
  254. 10:34to put color on the ceiling to really
  255. 10:36bring out some of those features you're
  256. 10:38okay with that right yeah if I have to
  257. 10:41be it's kind of a test for you here okay
  258. 10:44let's have a look at a very pale sort of
  259. 10:46Bluey Green in here nice thing about
  260. 10:49blue is it's very ethereal people like
  261. 10:51to be around it and that they associate
  262. 10:52it to philosophy and thinking but it is
  263. 10:55very light so there's a lot less
  264. 10:56contrast if we do this if we go to a
  265. 10:59medium color then I'm thinking the
  266. 11:01orange what's kind of nice about this is
  267. 11:03it's certainly on the brighter side so
  268. 11:05you're going to get almost like the
  269. 11:06sense of a sunset or sunniness on the
  270. 11:09ceiling or making going along with what
  271. 11:11you were thinking about having Rich
  272. 11:13colors which would be that deep purple
  273. 11:15color of our perfume and really deep
  274. 11:18rich lavish color to put on the ceiling
  275. 11:20which again the darker it guesss the
  276. 11:22more it's going to emphasize your trim
  277. 11:23workk on the ceiling The Medallion will
  278. 11:26that be painted as well no we'll leave
  279. 11:29the ceiling Medallion white which is
  280. 11:30different than what the victorians would
  281. 11:31have done but for us since it's such a
  282. 11:33nice feature we want it to stand out so
  283. 11:35we're only going to do the flat part of
  284. 11:37the ceiling strangely enough I think I'm
  285. 11:40kind of leaning towards the purple okay
  286. 11:44although this is nice might be too
  287. 11:48neutral look who's stepping out of the
  288. 11:50box like the cat that eat the canary I
  289. 11:53am very excited about that because I
  290. 11:55think that is a bold sexy color and I
  291. 11:58love it sounds like okay and wow you've
  292. 12:01really broken out it's quite a day yeah
  293. 12:05my worst fear has come true we're
  294. 12:06painting the ceiling and it's purple and
  295. 12:08it's
  296. 12:11purple victorians really knew how to
  297. 12:14decorate the only problem with this
  298. 12:15particular room is missing part of its
  299. 12:18crown molding so if you're wondering how
  300. 12:20to fix it follow me I'm going to show
  301. 12:22you a great place to put your crown back
  302. 12:25together these samples look just like
  303. 12:28traditional plaster crown molding but
  304. 12:30they're actually made from
  305. 12:34polystyrene in fact large blocks of it
  306. 12:36are wire cut into custom profiles based
  307. 12:39on a computer generated design it's then
  308. 12:42coated with an acrylic cement mixture
  309. 12:44and finished with a layer of gypson that
  310. 12:47makes it easy to install and join so
  311. 12:51it's seamless and you'll never even know
  312. 12:53that the crown was missing it's like
  313. 12:55going back 100 years into the future
  314. 12:59purple and charcoal gray to me there
  315. 13:01you're done you have a color scheme but
  316. 13:03now we have to have another color in
  317. 13:04there and I from the color
  318. 13:08wheel let's see how this
  319. 13:10[Music]
  320. 13:11[Applause]
  321. 13:26goes okay what just happened Matt who
  322. 13:28started Ed out with white went all the
  323. 13:30way over to purple I mean there's
  324. 13:32nothing more dramatic than purple on the
  325. 13:34color wheel I mean aside from the black
  326. 13:36gray they put on the
  327. 13:37walls well sometimes uh the color wheel
  328. 13:40really brings out strange different new
  329. 13:42adventurous things in people it's
  330. 13:44fabulous color Choice 3 I can't really
  331. 13:47imagine what the options are going to be
  332. 13:49because I can't Envision what would look
  333. 13:51good with those two I have no idea what
  334. 13:54we could have as a third one I don't
  335. 13:57think it's going to be a floor
  336. 13:59I'm not sure who should make this
  337. 14:01decision because what I'd like to focus
  338. 14:03on is making your furniture that you
  339. 14:05inherited from your family it's very
  340. 14:07Victorian in its style and even the
  341. 14:08fabric is pretty dated looking so we can
  342. 14:11keep it traditional or we can make it a
  343. 14:13little more modern depending on what
  344. 14:14color you choose so this is where I'd
  345. 14:16like to get your
  346. 14:17input okay all right
  347. 14:21okay let's see how this goes based on
  348. 14:24our previous color choices I'm going to
  349. 14:26come back to this teacup now this color
  350. 14:28is very light almost icicle like and I
  351. 14:31just Envision when you're doing holiday
  352. 14:33decorating that would be a really good
  353. 14:35color combo matte I'm going to give in
  354. 14:37here we can have a look at the white
  355. 14:40Prem and doing the fabric of the
  356. 14:42furniture in a white a cream a beige
  357. 14:45will really modernize it even though the
  358. 14:47style will remain traditional we're
  359. 14:49going to give it a cleaner look overall
  360. 14:51and white is definitely going to do that
  361. 14:53or we could do what the victorians did
  362. 14:54which is had all dark colors as well as
  363. 14:56dark Furniture so we could do that in in
  364. 14:59the chocolate brown color of the ribbon
  365. 15:00here so in this case the furniture is
  366. 15:03not going to stand out as much against
  367. 15:04our wall color although it is a nice
  368. 15:06color combo this is going to give you a
  369. 15:07much more deep atmospheric
  370. 15:10feel that's a lot to think about I know
  371. 15:13I can see that you're like I'm not sure
  372. 15:16I was really cruising along until now
  373. 15:18I'll go first yeah okay
  374. 15:21surprisingly I don't like the color of
  375. 15:24the Prem really or yeah or the sort of
  376. 15:28blue
  377. 15:29CU I'm a Spiller and all my whole family
  378. 15:32are Spillers so I'm just thinking
  379. 15:34holidays get together that sort of
  380. 15:37off-white or blue will be a different
  381. 15:39color by the time that the part is over
  382. 15:41so I'm going to lean towards the brown
  383. 15:44of the bat there for the
  384. 15:46furniture I
  385. 15:48disagree I think that if we do the
  386. 15:50furniture in a darker color it'll make
  387. 15:53the whole room a little too dark for my
  388. 15:54taste and
  389. 15:56overbearing while the blue I really like
  390. 15:59the color I'm a little concerned that it
  391. 16:01will be a bit too feminine that's true
  392. 16:03depending on the fabric Choice the
  393. 16:05pattern I'm on the pram wow okay so I'm
  394. 16:09not sure what's going on it's like a
  395. 16:10huge roll reversal you started out dark
  396. 16:13you started out light and now you've
  397. 16:15swap positions completely and Megan you
  398. 16:17are picking white for your family's
  399. 16:19Furniture so it's going to go more
  400. 16:21modern yep as long as you both feel good
  401. 16:23right now that's all I need to know will
  402. 16:26you be happy in a room of purple and
  403. 16:28white and gray
  404. 16:30yeah I hope so okay I'll just sit in
  405. 16:33there and look pretty if you're not yeah
  406. 16:35and I'll just be standing in the corner
  407. 16:36serving the tea yes you will although I
  408. 16:40really wanted to work with the existing
  409. 16:41floor in the home it's just in a tad
  410. 16:44worse shape than I had hoped so I've
  411. 16:46added instead over top an engineered
  412. 16:48wood floor that floats it's essentially
  413. 16:51tongue and groove it's a little bit
  414. 16:53thinner and sits on top of your existing
  415. 16:55floor and the black is so dramatic in
  416. 16:58this room it gives us this great
  417. 17:00different unexpected background on which
  418. 17:02to put furniture and decorations as we
  419. 17:04get ready for our celebrations in this
  420. 17:08space Megan and Matt have a beautiful
  421. 17:10Victorian living room that really has
  422. 17:13just needed a little bit of TLC and what
  423. 17:15better way to do it is by adding color
  424. 17:18they use the stove pipe as their
  425. 17:20inspiration for the wall and I chose a
  426. 17:22charcoal gray okay it's maybe not what
  427. 17:25most people think about as a traditional
  428. 17:27Victorian color but the richness and the
  429. 17:29Darkness of the color really emphasizes
  430. 17:32the drama of this large room but not as
  431. 17:35much as there Second Color Choice the
  432. 17:37color of perfumes from the Victorian era
  433. 17:40this color purple is Regal and really
  434. 17:42makes the ceiling stand out and brings
  435. 17:45some color into really what is a neutral
  436. 17:47space right now taking their old
  437. 17:49furniture that looked kind of dated and
  438. 17:51adding white to it brings it back to
  439. 17:53this Century but reflects elements of
  440. 17:56the past Century they're the perfect
  441. 17:58marriage for a traditional space with a
  442. 18:01modern
  443. 18:02[Music]
  444. 18:04flare this is like a double whammy cuz
  445. 18:07we're putting the room together and then
  446. 18:09we're going to bling it out for holiday
  447. 18:11season exactly so we're going to stay in
  448. 18:13the whole silver theme here and notice
  449. 18:16how we're tying in a little purple to
  450. 18:17the ceiling this is what we're going to
  451. 18:19start adding for Holiday see how we have
  452. 18:22the fruit and it kind of looks candied
  453. 18:25right so to give us that you know feel
  454. 18:27of Sparkle
  455. 18:29I'm sensing you're not that impressed
  456. 18:32look what else you can never have too
  457. 18:33many of these the disco ball come on
  458. 18:36nothing says party like disco balls and
  459. 18:38I have many of them that will be S up is
  460. 18:40it wrong to hang these well yes like
  461. 18:43that is no it is it is wrong this room
  462. 18:47is glamorous it's like maybe even over
  463. 18:49the top a little I sort of picture
  464. 18:52flowers everywhere like some kind of R
  465. 18:54Coco nightmare or something
  466. 18:58[Music]
  467. 19:13what I love about this room is how
  468. 19:16dramatic a transformation it's been I
  469. 19:18love that we've melded modern with
  470. 19:21traditional and even on the holiday
  471. 19:23decorating side instead of decorating
  472. 19:26the way the victorians did we took that
  473. 19:27idea and went modern with it by adding
  474. 19:29more sparkle and shine so it's a little
  475. 19:32more blingy you know our guests love
  476. 19:34that I mean I just think it's got this
  477. 19:35great almost 1940s feel very glamorous
  478. 19:39and really a showstopper when you walk
  479. 19:41in the
  480. 19:46house oh my this is our room it looks
  481. 19:49bigger yes there's no wall in here hey
  482. 19:52wow yeah gone
  483. 19:56fixed felt like there was some kind of
  484. 19:58phantom wall just kind of there and I
  485. 20:00was like oh I got to go around
  486. 20:03here this is
  487. 20:06beautiful
  488. 20:10fancy it's it's a fancy room I can't
  489. 20:12believe we live here fancy fancy room
  490. 20:15yeah so what do you think of the wall
  491. 20:17color I mean the gray is a bit
  492. 20:18unconventional for Victorian thinking
  493. 20:21well we are very adventurous it's not
  494. 20:24like oh it's so dark nothing is
  495. 20:27overwhelming or gross MH actually is
  496. 20:30fairly light and it's allowing things to
  497. 20:32sort of they really pop window they
  498. 20:34really pop look at that things are
  499. 20:36popping popping yeah and brings out your
  500. 20:38baseboard and trim beautifully and look
  501. 20:41at The
  502. 20:41Medallion the birds it pops off so
  503. 20:46perfectly oh speaking of looking up okay
  504. 20:49so the purple on the ceiling now that
  505. 20:51you see it is it as you know scary as
  506. 20:54you thought it was going to be look at
  507. 20:55how how glamorous that is yeah it really
  508. 20:59opens the ceiling up it's not as heavy
  509. 21:02as I thought it was going to be y we
  510. 21:04were wrong can you believe this is the
  511. 21:07old antique furniture oh It's So Posh
  512. 21:11this is like the most beautiful shade of
  513. 21:14white I'd call the color on the sofa
  514. 21:16champagne glams up old grandma sofa it
  515. 21:18looks fantastic now we do have some
  516. 21:21other furniture back here you may
  517. 21:22recognize the garage sale
  518. 21:25chairs the nice thing about these is
  519. 21:27they're done in a faux ostrich so it's
  520. 21:30basically like a plastic leather and you
  521. 21:32can spill on those yeah just in
  522. 21:35case that is pretty Chic and all the
  523. 21:38Sparkle is for decorating purposes for
  524. 21:41the holidays is it too much for you no
  525. 21:43it feels really nice it's not as
  526. 21:46feminine as I was fearing I think it has
  527. 21:49enough modern elements in it to be
  528. 21:51masculine uhhuh it's kind of a really
  529. 21:52neat blend for a room yeah you did it
  530. 21:55it's just kind of kind of sexy it is
  531. 21:57very sexy
  532. 21:59we're going to have a party we're going

  534. 22:03going to flow like water cuz everyone's
  535. 22:05going to be oooing and awing over our
  536. 22:07beautiful taste
  537. 22:09y we're not going to tell them that Jane
  538. 22:11Lockard had anything to do with it no
  539. 22:13they don't need to
  540. 22:14[Music]
  541. 22:18know when you combine the best of a
  542. 22:20traditional style like Victorian in this
  543. 22:23case as Megan and Matt have with a very
  544. 22:26nice modern color palette you end up up
  545. 22:28creating a living room that is clearly
  546. 22:30worth celebrating for more information
