- 0:00So, we're starting the book of
- 0:01Colossians. And this [music] was written
- 0:03in about 60 AD, likely in Paul's first
- 0:06imprisonment while in Rome. And
- 0:10apparently while he was in [music]
- 0:12Ephesus, a gentleman became a believer
- 0:15[clears throat] whose name was [music]
- 0:17Apapaff.
- 0:19And Apapus then took the gospel message
- 0:21[music]
- 0:22to the region of Colass. And that's
- 0:25where a small church rose up. And that
- 0:29church would have likely been uh
- 0:33affected by perhaps even derived from
- 0:37uh procelite Jewish communities. So even
- 0:42though the the church is in a pagan
- 0:45gentile region in a lot of instances
- 0:49they would have gone to the synagogue
- 0:52[music]
- 0:53to people who had converted to Judaism
- 0:55and they would have started bringing the
- 0:57gospel message to those people. Uh not
- 1:01universally but there was always going
- 1:03to be a blend. And so it can kind of be
- 1:05strange to Americans to say, "Why is
- 1:07Paul fighting the Jews, but they're not
- 1:10in Judea? They're not in Israel. They're
- 1:13they're all over the Gentile Empire and
- 1:16Gentile cities." Well, because the
- 1:19churches were starting from Paul's
- 1:22ministry to Jewish converts from a
- 1:26gentile background. So sometimes
- 1:28comprising actual Jews who were part of
- 1:31the diaspora who were exiled from their
- 1:34homeland and so they're meeting in a
- 1:35synagogue but then they would also
- 1:37convert the Gentiles. So Judaism was a
- 1:41widespread [music]
- 1:42faith even among the Gentiles. And so
- 1:45he's establishing churches there and
- 1:48there's a church that rises up in Colass
- 1:51and uh and then a heresy starts taking
- 1:54root and it's the Colossian heresy. It's
- 1:57called the Colossian heresy. [music] And
- 2:00in effect, the Colossian heresy is kind
- 2:04of three things. It's legalism.
- 2:07It's the idea that you don't have to
- 2:09have an ongoing relationship with the
- 2:12living God through his spirit through
- 2:15the covenant of the cross, the blood of
- 2:17Jesus at the cross. [music]
- 2:18Instead, you can broker a secure
- 2:21eternity through what you do and don't
- 2:24eat, how you do and don't wash your
- 2:26hands, how you observe days and months
- 2:29and weeks and years and and the old
- 2:31Levitical system. The legalism is much
- 2:35more attractive because you don't have
- 2:38to have a walk with God. It's something
- 2:40you can take pride in. You can just go
- 2:42through the rituals and it's like most
- 2:44of the religions of the world today. you
- 2:46you go through the rituals and you're
- 2:47good. So the legalism is attractive for
- 2:50that. Um part of the legalism was
- 2:52aseticism
- 2:54and aseticism is the idea of harsh
- 2:57treatment of the body that we choose for
- 2:59ourself. It's not taking up your cross
- 3:01and following Jesus which in its essence
- 3:05is disobeying our willful
- 3:09uh rebellion against God. Our cross is
- 3:11the surrender of our will to God. That's
- 3:13what was seen in Gethsemane. Not my will
- 3:16but your will be done. That's the
- 3:18legitimate cross of Christ that we are
- 3:20each called to bear. But as aceticism is
- 3:23instead this extreme or harsh treatment
- 3:26of the body. It's like I'm going to sit
- 3:28in a painful position for this many
- 3:30hours and that's going to make me more
- 3:32righteous. So it's self-made
- 3:34self-imposed religion. It's where the
- 3:36idea of beating yourself comes from.
- 3:38Self flagagulation. Um, and then there's
- 3:42also a form of mysticism that they're
- 3:44falling into. And that was the uh
- 3:48claiming that they could disobey the
- 3:51gospel and go beyond the teachings of
- 3:53the apostles because they'd had visions
- 3:55and they'd heard from God directly and
- 3:58now they saw so much more probably in a
- 4:00drug induced state had some super
- 4:03revelation that amounted to a hill of
- 4:05beans. And those three things, legalism,
- 4:08aeticism, mysticism in varying degrees
- 4:11comprise the Colossian heresy. And Paul
- 4:15writes this letter to debunk the
- 4:17Colossian heresy.
- 4:22Colossians 1:1 Paul an apostle of Jesus
- 4:26Christ by the will of God and Timothy
- 4:29our brother to the saints and faithful
- 4:32brethren in Christ who are at Colass.
- 4:36Grace to you and peace from God our
- 4:38father.
- 4:40We give thanks to God the Father of our
- 4:43Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for
- 4:46you since we heard of your faith in
- 4:49Christ Jesus and the love which you have
- 4:53for all the saints.
- 4:56Faith always produces love. The only
- 4:58thing that matters, remember, is faith
- 5:00expressing itself through love.
- 5:03We give thanks to God, the Father of our
- 5:05Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for
- 5:08you, since we heard of your faith in
- 5:10Christ Jesus, and the love which you
- 5:13have for all the saints, because of the
- 5:16hope laid up for you in heaven, of which
- 5:19you previously heard in the word of
- 5:21truth, the gospel, which has come to
- 5:25you, just as in all the world also, it
- 5:29is constantly bearing fruit and
- 5:31increasing.
- 5:32even as it has been doing since the day
- 5:36you heard of it and understood the grace
- 5:39of God in truth,
- 5:42just as you learned it from Apapus, our
- 5:46beloved fellow bondervant who is a
- 5:49faithful servant of Christ on our
- 5:51behalf. And he also informed us of your
- 5:55love in the spirit.
- 5:58So right here we got Paul setting the
- 6:01stage. Paul and Timothy are together
- 6:03writing this letter and he's happy for
- 6:06the faith that they have in Jesus that
- 6:08has resulted in a love for the brethren.
- 6:11And he's happy that the gospel is
- 6:14working that it's increasing all over
- 6:16the world. And in this he's sending them
- 6:18a subtle hint that we don't need to be
- 6:20going on to create something new because
- 6:23it's bearing fruit as it is. And he says
- 6:26that he also informed us that Apaparus
- 6:30informed them of the brethren's love in
- 6:34the spirit. That's an encouragement to
- 6:36Paul. That's an evidence of something
- 6:38worth praise.
- 6:40For this reason also, since the day we
- 6:42heard of it, the love they have for each
- 6:44other, we have not ceased to pray for
- 6:46you and to ask that you may be filled
- 6:49with the knowledge of his will in all
- 6:52spiritual wisdom and understanding.
- 6:55so that you will walk in a manner worthy
- 6:59of the Lord. Colossians, I'm going to
- 7:01tell you, is very similar to Ephesians.
- 7:05A lot of the ideas, walking worthy of
- 7:07the calling and a lot of other themes
- 7:10Paul is going to use identically. I
- 7:12think he probably wrote them around the
- 7:14same time and probably with the same
- 7:16burden in mind. so that you will walk in
- 7:19a manner worthy of the Lord to please
- 7:22him in all respects, bearing fruit in
- 7:25every good work and increasing in the
- 7:28knowledge of God. So he says, "In short,
- 7:32we heard that you love each other. We're
- 7:33very happy, but we have not stopped
- 7:36praying because that's not enough. We
- 7:38want you to increase. We have not ceased
- 7:42to pray that you would increase in the
- 7:44knowledge of his will in all spiritual
- 7:46wisdom and understanding so that you'll
- 7:49walk worthy of the Lord. You love each
- 7:51other. Good. You have faith in Jesus.
- 7:53Good. But you need to actually walk this
- 7:55out. And what does that look like?
- 7:58Bearing fruit in every good work,
- 8:01increasing in the knowledge of God. The
- 8:04knowledge of God is great, but it's a
- 8:06relationship. It's not a knowledge about
- 8:08God. its relationship with God. And as
- 8:11it increases, it bears fruit. Verse 11,
- 8:15strengthened with all power. You can't
- 8:18bear fruit by your willpower. You can't
- 8:20bear fruit by your good works that
- 8:23you've chosen for yourself. You've got
- 8:25to be strengthened with all power. That
- 8:28means with all dunamies, with all
- 8:30supernatural grace, strengthened with
- 8:33all power according to his glorious
- 8:36might for the attaining of all
- 8:39steadfastness and patience joyously.
- 8:43How do we remain steadfast?
- 8:46We just say, "Oh, God does it all for
- 8:48us." No, we pray and we don't stop
- 8:51praying that the church will be
- 8:53strengthened with power for the
- 8:56attaining of steadfastness. Paul was not
- 8:59complacent. He was not Calvinistic. He
- 9:02did not think, oh, you know,
- 9:03perseverance of the saints once they got
- 9:05it, they can't lose it. He said,
- 9:08Timothy, we got to pray for this church.
- 9:10They need to increase. What they have is
- 9:13good, but it's not enough.
- 9:16So that they will walk worthy of the
- 9:18Lord to please him in all respects,
- 9:20bearing fruit in every good work,
- 9:22increasing in the knowledge of God,
- 9:24strengthened with all power according to
- 9:27his glorious might.
- 9:29This is not an intellectual faith. This
- 9:31is not a logic faith. This is power and
- 9:35might.
- 9:37And why do we get power and might? for
- 9:39the attaining of all steadfastness
- 9:43and patience joyously giving thanks to
- 9:46the Father who has qualified us to share
- 9:51in the inheritance of the saints in the
- 9:54light. The Father has qualified us, but
- 9:57we're praying that we will increase. If
- 10:00these things are yours, Peter would say,
- 10:02in increasing measure, you will never be
- 10:05barren or unfruitful. That's a great
- 10:07parallel chapter and verse to this first
- 10:10section of chapter 1.
- 10:13Verse 13. For he rescued us from the
- 10:17domain of darkness
- 10:21and transferred us to the kingdom of his
- 10:24beloved son. Now those who think the
- 10:27kingdom isn't for heaven, you miss this
- 10:30one because he's using two kingdom
- 10:32terms. He's saying the father rescued us
- 10:37from the domain.
- 10:40Domain is king dominion. That is a
- 10:44kingdom term. He took us out of the
- 10:46kingdom of darkness. One power is
- 10:49darkness. One power is light. Took us
- 10:51out of the kingdom of darkness and
- 10:53transferred us to the kingdom of his
- 10:56beloved son.
- 10:59He doesn't say he will one day transfer
- 11:01us. He doesn't say after the great
- 11:04tribulation and the rapture we will come
- 11:06back. It says he has transferred us into
- 11:09the kingdom of his beloved son. What
- 11:12does that mean? That means Paul is using
- 11:15language father and son a lot. And he's
- 11:19telling us that the reign of God is
- 11:22through the relationship of father and
- 11:24sunship. He's tying the very idea of
- 11:28kingdom to the relationship of sunship.
- 11:32Okay. If we don't have sunship, if we
- 11:35don't have fatherhood, we don't have
- 11:37kingdom. Now, what does that make you
- 11:39think of except the Lord's kingdom
- 11:40prayer? Our dad who art in heaven, our
- 11:43father, hallowed be your name and
- 11:46authority. Your kingdom come. He doesn't
- 11:49say our king who art in heaven because
- 11:52fatherhood, the ability to hear from the
- 11:54father is the start of the kingdom.
- 11:57Remember when Jesus said to Peter, "Who
- 11:59do men say that I am?" And then Peter
- 12:02said that he was the Christ. And what
- 12:03did Jesus say? Blessed are you because
- 12:06flesh and blood did not reveal this to
- 12:08you, but my father who is in heaven and
- 12:10upon this rock I'll build my church. I
- 12:12give you the keys to the kingdom. When
- 12:15the father manifests his will on earth
- 12:18through the sons, we have a kingdom. And
- 12:20of course, this is echoing the last
- 12:23verse of the Old Testament that to avoid
- 12:26the curse of damnation, God's going to
- 12:28turn the hearts of fathers to sons and
- 12:30sons to fathers. So he has delivered us
- 12:34to the kingdom of his beloved son in
- 12:38whom we have redemption, the forgiveness
- 12:40of sins. Where do we have redemption?
- 12:45In Jesus. Jesus is a place that we've
- 12:50got to get into. He's not just a formula
- 12:53that we got to accept happened.
- 12:56He's a space that we've got to dwell in.
- 12:58He's a body. He's a temple. He's a
- 13:01tabernacle. And everything good is in
- 13:04him. Positional salvation.
- 13:07And now he's going to talk about Jesus.
- 13:10And this is going to be his the launch
- 13:12of his attack on the Judaizers who are
- 13:16introducing the Colossian heresy of
- 13:18legalism, aestheticism and mysticism.
- 13:21All which is undermining the
- 13:23[clears throat] centrality of Jesus.
- 13:26Okay?
- 13:28In whom we have redemption, the
- 13:30forgiveness of sins. He Jesus is the
- 13:33image of the invisible God, the
- 13:38firstborn of all creation.
- 13:41Okay?
- 13:43So listen, look, look at this. Paul
- 13:45tells us right here that God is
- 13:47invisible.
- 13:49Why? Because Jesus told the woman at the
- 13:50well, God is spirit. You can't see a
- 13:53spirit.
- 13:55Amen. So John tells us that no one has
- 13:58seen God. tells us that in his gospel
- 14:00and his epistle. This is one of the
- 14:03insights that we can say when Steven saw
- 14:05his vision looking up into heaven, he
- 14:07did not see an old man and a young man
- 14:09because you cannot see God.
- 14:12The only image of God that you will ever
- 14:16see is Jesus.
- 14:19He is the lamb upon the throne. Jesus is
- 14:22the tabernacle that Yahweh God has taken
- 14:26up full residence in. He is the image of
- 14:30the invisible God. That's the big
- 14:33mystery of the incarnation that the God
- 14:35who could not be seen put on flesh. And
- 14:38that flesh is a human being. But inside
- 14:41that flesh, animating that flesh,
- 14:43filling that flesh is the almighty God.
- 14:46So it is the father that is in me that
- 14:48does the works. Jesus would say he is
- 14:52the image of the invisible God, the
- 14:53firstborn of all creation.
- 14:57For by him all things were created, both
- 15:00in the heavens and on earth, visible and
- 15:04invisible, whether thrones or dominions
- 15:06or rulers or authorities, all things
- 15:08have been created through him and for
- 15:11him.
- 15:13Who is it talking about? Jesus.
- 15:16Because God created the heavens and the
- 15:18earth by his word. In the beginning was
- 15:22the word and the word was with God and
- 15:25the word was God and the word became
- 15:28flesh and dwelt among us. So the aspect
- 15:32of God that became flesh was his word
- 15:36and that aspect was how God created
- 15:38everything that has been created. That
- 15:40doesn't mean that there were two people
- 15:42at the beginning. The Lord was by
- 15:45himself when he stretched out the
- 15:46heavens. One being has multiple
- 15:50manifestations. Just like I am one
- 15:52person and to grandmama I am son and to
- 15:57you I am father. To the Lord I am
- 16:01believer. I am child. Do you understand?
- 16:04To Judah I am brother. This does not
- 16:07require a multiplicity of persons, but a
- 16:10multiplicity of offices or aspects,
- 16:14manifestations of who I am as one being.
- 16:18For by him all things were created, both
- 16:21in the heavens and on earth, visible and
- 16:23invisible, whether thrones or dominions
- 16:25or rulers or authorities. All things
- 16:27have been created through him and for
- 16:29him. And he is before all things, and in
- 16:32him all things hold together.
- 16:36In Christ, everything holds together.
- 16:39This is the same image of upon this
- 16:41rock, I will build my church and the
- 16:43gates of hell will not prevail against
- 16:46it. Amen. Everything holds together that
- 16:49is truly in Christ. Everything that is
- 16:53falling apart, everything that is
- 16:55driving apart by centrifugal force
- 16:57testifies that it is not in Christ.
- 17:01Where there are divisions, they are not
- 17:03in Christ.
- 17:05Amen. Where there are quarrels, they are
- 17:07not in Christ. Where there are splits,
- 17:10they are not in Christ. Where there are
- 17:12are ruined families, that is not Christ.
- 17:16Everything that is truly in and a part
- 17:19of him and his creation holds together.
- 17:24He is also the head of the body, the
- 17:26church. And he is the beginning, the
- 17:30firstborn from the dead, so that he
- 17:32himself will come to have first place in
- 17:34everything. He's the first of the new
- 17:37creation, the first to come out of the
- 17:39grave, and that's the new creation.
- 17:41Everything that is resurrected is of the
- 17:44new creation. And he is the firstborn
- 17:47from the dead. So that he himself will
- 17:49come to have first place in everything.
- 17:52Amen. Because he rose from the dead, he
- 17:55ascended into heaven and he took first
- 17:57place. Not second fiddle, first place.
- 18:01Amen. The human being in whom the father
- 18:05dwelt
- 18:07laid aside all his earthly limitations
- 18:12so that God was all that was in all. And
- 18:15he took the throne of God
- 18:18and he is the lamb upon the throne. And
- 18:21of Yahweh, it was said in Isaiah, he is
- 18:23the beginning and the end. But in the
- 18:25book of Revelations, the last chapter,
- 18:26it says of Jesus, he is the alpha and
- 18:29the omega. He is the beginning and the
- 18:30end.
- 18:32Verse 19, for it was the father's good
- 18:36pleasure
- 18:37for all the fullness to dwell in him.
- 18:43Now, we're going to know in in the next
- 18:46chapter that he's talking about all the
- 18:49fullness of God.
- 18:52[clears throat]
- 18:53The father said, "Everything that I am,
- 18:55I want it to be sourced out of this
- 18:57man."
- 19:01Does that mean that that's speaking in a
- 19:04quantitative sense? No. Because you
- 19:06can't quantify a spirit. To say that the
- 19:10father took up full residence in Jesus
- 19:13is not to say that he was not in heaven
- 19:17because the heaven the heavens cannot
- 19:19contain him nor the earth sustain him.
- 19:21God is everywhere. Because he is here
- 19:24does not mean he is not there. That's
- 19:26silly.
- 19:28Because he's moving on your heart
- 19:29doesn't mean he's not moving on
- 19:30Conniey's heart. God can be all places
- 19:34at all times. He has no limitations. So,
- 19:37so for the father, for it to please the
- 19:40father that all the father's fullness of
- 19:44God should dwell in Jesus is not to say
- 19:47he had no expression or voice or
- 19:50manifestation elsewhere. No, it is to
- 19:52say that he is the source. He is the
- 19:56outshining. He Jesus is like the glass
- 20:01globe of a light bulb and the father is
- 20:04the outshining radiance. the very spirit
- 20:08of the almighty from inside that globe
- 20:10and the only image of the father we will
- 20:13ever see is Jesus that's why Philip said
- 20:17show us the father lord and it will be
- 20:19enough for us and Jesus says how can you
- 20:22say show us the father have I been with
- 20:25you so long and you do not know me
- 20:28philillip when you have seen me you have
- 20:31seen the father
- 20:34Jesus
- 20:35Jesus
- 20:36is the full unqualified manifestation of
- 20:40God the father. That's what he is.
- 20:45That's the divinity we are encountering
- 20:47in Jesus.
- 20:49God the father. And this fulfills Isaiah
- 20:529:6 where he says, "Unto us a child is
- 20:55born, a son is given, and that son's
- 20:57name will be called everlasting father,
- 21:01mighty God, prince of peace. He's
- 21:04everything. Wonderful counselor, Holy
- 21:06Spirit,
- 21:08everlasting father, mighty God, prince
- 21:10of peace. Everything that there is about
- 21:13God is sourced and realized and fully
- 21:17manifested in Jesus Christ.
- 21:20Full stop.
- 21:23For it was the father's good pleasure
- 21:26for all the fullness, all the fullness
- 21:31to dwell in him, Jesus. and through him
- 21:35to reconcile all things to himself.
- 21:40He was not reconciling
- 21:42to another. In a sense, he was because
- 21:45he's a two-fold being. So, the human
- 21:48being is reconciling to the divine that
- 21:52resides within him.
- 21:54Do you understand?
- 21:57But it's reconciling all things to
- 21:59himself. Because the divine that resides
- 22:01within him is not a second person. It's
- 22:03him
- 22:05having made peace through the blood of
- 22:07his cross through him I say whe the
- 22:09things on earth or things in heaven and
- 22:11although you were formerly alienated and
- 22:15hostile in your mind engaged in evil
- 22:18deeds yet he has now reconciled you in
- 22:21his fleshly body
- 22:24through death in order to present you
- 22:27before him holy and blameless and beyond
- 22:31reproach.
- 22:32He says, "He has reconciled." Past
- 22:35tense.
- 22:36That means you're allowed to come near
- 22:38him. He has reconciled you through his
- 22:41fleshly body in order to present you
- 22:43before him holy and blameless and beyond
- 22:45reproach. If
- 22:48if indeed you continue
- 22:53in the faith firmly established and
- 22:56steadfast. Now, how are they going to be
- 22:58steadfast and continue? if they have
- 23:02been strengthened with all power
- 23:03according to his glorious might for the
- 23:05attaining of all steadfastness.
- 23:08So he says God's reconciled you but
- 23:10you've got to continue so much for once
- 23:13saved always saved. You're reconciled.
- 23:15Hurrah. If you continue, if you continue
- 23:20in the faith, firmly established and
- 23:22steadfast and not moved away from the
- 23:26hope of the gospel that you have heard,
- 23:30which was proclaimed in all creation
- 23:32under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was
- 23:34made a minister.
- 23:36So he's saying Jesus because he was a
- 23:40human being and because it pleased the
- 23:42father that the father dwell in that
- 23:44human being. He was walking, breathing,
- 23:46talking, visible reconciliation.
- 23:50He was the union, the merger between
- 23:52what was human and mortal and what was
- 23:55divine and eternal. Jesus was that
- 23:58being. His name is called the father. If
- 24:01you can't call Jesus the father, you are
- 24:04not in o agreement with Isaiah 9:6. His
- 24:07name is called the father and the holy
- 24:10spirit. He's not a third of the godhead.
- 24:13He's not a piece of the godhead. He's
- 24:15not a created thing from the godhead. He
- 24:17is a human being and that describes the
- 24:19son and he is the almighty god and that
- 24:23describes who animates and fills and
- 24:26forms the identity the spiritual
- 24:28identity of that human being.
- 24:31Now I rejoice in my suffering for your
- 24:33sake and in my flesh I do my share on
- 24:37behalf of his body which is the church
- 24:41in filling up what is lacking in
- 24:45Christ's affliction.
- 24:47Now here is an enigma.
- 24:50My my my whole point of his letter is to
- 24:52say don't go back to the Jewish
- 24:54legalism. Don't go back to aeticism or
- 24:57mysticism because Jesus is enough. But
- 25:00now Paul says, I rejoice in what I'm
- 25:04going through. He's in prison. I rejoice
- 25:05in my suffering for your sake and in my
- 25:09flesh. I do my share on behalf of his
- 25:12body, which is the church, in filling up
- 25:14what is lacking in Christ's affliction.
- 25:18You say, "So,
- 25:21was Jesus suffering on the cross not a
- 25:24sufficient atonement? A sacrifice once
- 25:27for all?" Yes, it was. It was a
- 25:30sufficient atonement once for all. So,
- 25:33there's two kinds of crosses. There is
- 25:36the cross that Jesus bore at Calvary,
- 25:38which is a once-forall sacrifice that
- 25:42you can never add anything to. And that
- 25:44is the atoning sacrifice
- 25:47that by his blood removes the the
- 25:52barrier of justice that was preventing
- 25:54us from access to the the holy presence.
- 25:57Amen. So we have reconciliation
- 26:00through the blood of his cross. Period.
- 26:03Full stop.
- 26:05But then there is the cross of taking up
- 26:08our cross daily. And that is not a
- 26:11different cross, but it's not an atoning
- 26:14sacrifice.
- 26:16It is instead a sacrifice unto union
- 26:19with Jesus.
- 26:21So our bearing of our cross unites us to
- 26:25the sacrifice that has already saved us.
- 26:28He says in in Romans 7, we are united
- 26:32with him through death. Through our own
- 26:34carrying of our cross, we bear a cross
- 26:38of fellowship. We bear a cross of union.
- 26:42We bear a cross of saying grace is going
- 26:46to flow through me in this affliction.
- 26:49And it's not the grace of atoning for
- 26:51anybody. But [snorts] the body still
- 26:53needs to see a hurting people who are
- 26:58still walking in the victory over the
- 27:00devil that Jesus exemplified at the
- 27:02cross. Does that make sense? So it's
- 27:05this cross of a testimony. It's this
- 27:08cross of a power greater than the threat
- 27:11of death. It's this cross of forgiveness
- 27:15at the at the wrong end of false
- 27:17accusation. It's the cross of a prisoner
- 27:20having it having all joy. Do you
- 27:22understand? So it it is a cross that is
- 27:26extending the suffering Christ into the
- 27:28here and now but not in any way adding
- 27:31to the atonement that was completed by
- 27:34only one sinless man. So when
- 27:36[clears throat] he says,"I fill up in my
- 27:37body that which is lacking in the
- 27:39afflictions of Christ," he's not saying
- 27:41that the atonement is lacking. He's
- 27:43saying your experience
- 27:46of grace in pain is lacking. So here
- 27:51Paul is going to show it to you. This is
- 27:53what this is what Jesus was doing and it
- 27:56connects you to what is completed
- 28:00of this church. I was made a minister
- 28:02according to the stewardship from God
- 28:05bestowed on me for your benefit so that
- 28:08I might fully carry out the preaching of
- 28:11the word of God.
- 28:13That is the mystery which has been
- 28:15hidden from the past ages and
- 28:18generations, but has now been manifested
- 28:21to his saints
- 28:24to whom God willed to make known what is
- 28:27the riches of the glory of this mystery
- 28:31among the Gentiles.
- 28:33And what is this mystery? Now, he's
- 28:36already told us what the mystery is
- 28:37regarding Jesus in 1 Timothy 3:16,
- 28:40right? Great is the mystery of godliness
- 28:43that God was manifested in the flesh.
- 28:46But what is the mystery here? Is it the
- 28:48same mystery?
- 28:50Okay. The mystery which has been hidden
- 28:53from past ages and generations but now
- 28:55has been manifested. So we've got
- 28:58mystery and manifestation. That sounds
- 29:00like what he said to Timothy. but now
- 29:02has been manifested to his saints
- 29:06to whom God willed to make known what is
- 29:10the riches of the glory of this mystery
- 29:13among the Gentiles
- 29:16which is
- 29:18Christ in you the hope of glory. So the
- 29:23mystery of godliness was God in Christ
- 29:27and the mystery of the church is Christ
- 29:29in you the hope of glory.
- 29:32This is the fulfillment of the prayer
- 29:34that Jesus prayed in John 17 that we
- 29:38would be one with God as he was one with
- 29:40God. I in them as you are as the father
- 29:45was in Jesus. Do you understand? So he
- 29:48was praying for incarnation not for a
- 29:50getalong spirit. He was praying for
- 29:53incarnation.
- 29:55Christ in you the hope of glory is the
- 29:57mystery.
- 29:59We proclaim him admonishing every man
- 30:03and teaching every man with all wisdom
- 30:06so that we may present every man
- 30:08complete
- 30:10in Christ.
- 30:13There is no man who is complete until he
- 30:16is part of a puzzle that is so much
- 30:18bigger [music] than himself. Until he is
- 30:20a member of a body. until he is complete
- 30:23in Christ. So Paul's whole ministry is
- 30:27to help you find your body where you
- 30:29become complete [music]
- 30:30in Christ.
- 30:32For this purpose also I labor striving
- 30:39according to his [music] power which
- 30:42mightily works within me. His whole
- 30:45purpose is to help you become complete
- 30:47in Christ. His whole purpose is to help
- 30:50you see Christ in a people and that that
- 30:54is the hope of glory. That God is in his
- 30:58tabernacle and his tabernacle is us.
