  1. 0:00it's hard to believe that one of the
  2. 0:02most evil crime sprees in Canadian
  3. 0:04history occurred in the Tiny Village of
  4. 0:07Tweed
  5. 0:08onario located on Highway 37 tweet is
  6. 0:12home to about 1,600 people as well as
  7. 0:156,000 people in the surrounding
  8. 0:18municipality Tweed also happens to be
  9. 0:21home to the smallest jail in North
  10. 0:23America founded in
  11. 0:251898 and honestly with the exception of
  12. 0:28the bars on the windows it's the most
  13. 0:30adorable jail I've ever seen it has
  14. 0:32three teeny tiny cells and stayed open
  15. 0:35for 50 years before closing in 1950 due
  16. 0:38to a lack of crime and is now a popular
  17. 0:41tourist attraction for Tweed Tweed is
  18. 0:44one of those stereotypical small towns
  19. 0:46where everyone knows everyone and nobody
  20. 0:48locked their doors that is until the
  21. 0:51fall of 2007 when strange break and
  22. 0:54Enter started to occur a fetish burglar
  23. 0:57was breaking into houses and only
  24. 1:00stealing women's
  25. 1:01underwear however most of these
  26. 1:03burglaries would go undetected the
  27. 1:06homeowners either didn't realize their
  28. 1:08home had been broken into or didn't
  29. 1:10report the burglaries to police out of
  30. 1:13embarrassment over what was taken by May
  31. 1:16of 2008 there had been 22 fetish
  32. 1:18break-ins in tweet alone that same month
  33. 1:22over 200 kilometers away in Ottawa
  34. 1:26similar Breakin enters and theft of
  35. 1:28women's underwear were occurring in the
  36. 1:31suburb community of Orleans but unlike
  37. 1:34the Tweet cases many of these Breakin
  38. 1:36enters were reported to the Ottawa
  39. 1:39Police who at first weren't too terribly
  40. 1:42concerned but after multiple thefts of
  41. 1:45lingerie in the Orleans area the Ottawa
  42. 1:48Police would issue a warning to the
  43. 1:50public on Halloween 2008 the break-ins
  44. 1:54would continue in both communities
  45. 1:56throughout 2009 and the Intruder was
  46. 1:59becoming more aggressive leaving
  47. 2:02taunting notes for the homeowners
  48. 2:04stealing their photographs and even
  49. 2:06their sex toys and then in September of
  50. 2:102009 two bizarre home invasions in Tweed
  51. 2:14were reported to the Ontario Provincial
  52. 2:17Police these crimes were so strange that
  53. 2:20the police themselves didn't take the
  54. 2:22first report seriously for a brief
  55. 2:25moment they even considered the attack
  56. 2:28had been fabricated by the victim them
  57. 2:30but after the second assault was
  58. 2:32reported just 2 weeks later the as
  59. 2:35salent now had the full attention of the
  60. 2:37police both women had been tied up
  61. 2:41blindfolded and forced to pose for
  62. 2:43explicit photographs before the Intruder
  63. 2:46vanished into the night investigators
  64. 2:49didn't connect the attacks and Tweed to
  65. 2:51The Fetish break-ins and even more odd
  66. 2:55the break-ins and lingerie theft would
  67. 2:58suddenly stop all together in late
  68. 3:00November of
  69. 3:022009 police were unaware that during
  70. 3:05this time the burglar had progressed to
  71. 3:08something much darker and then on
  72. 3:11January 29th
  73. 3:132010 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd suddenly
  74. 3:16disappeared from Belleville Ontario a
  75. 3:19joint investigation between three
  76. 3:22different police departments was
  77. 3:24immediately established and it wouldn't
  78. 3:27take long for them to link Jessica
  79. 3:29Lloyd's disappear appearance to the
  80. 3:30break-ins and attacks and Tweed as well
  81. 3:33as a murder that occurred in the town of
  82. 3:35Brighton only 20 minutes away there were
  83. 3:39just too many similarities it had to be
  84. 3:42the same offender while examining
  85. 3:45Jessica Lloyd's property for evidence
  86. 3:48unique tire tracks would be found in the
  87. 3:50snow and these tire tracks would lead
  88. 3:53police to a prime suspect a military man
  89. 3:58who up until this point wasn't even on
  90. 4:00their radar why would he be this man was
  91. 4:04the commander of Canada's largest Air
  92. 4:06Force Base not exactly their usual type
  93. 4:09of
  94. 4:10suspect but on February 7th
  95. 4:142010 after an intensive 10-hour police
  96. 4:17interview the floodgates would open this
  97. 4:21unlikely suspect would confess not only
  98. 4:24to the murder of Jessica Lloyd but also
  99. 4:27the murder of Corporal Mary France comoo
  100. 4:30in nearby Brighton
  101. 4:31Ontario as well as the two attacks and
  102. 4:34Tweed and 82 break and enters and theft
  103. 4:38to women's
  104. 4:39underwear this is the story of Colonel
  105. 4:42Russell
  106. 4:44Williams David Russell Williams was born
  107. 4:47in Cardiff South Wales in
  108. 4:491963 his parents were Cedric David
  109. 4:52Williams and Christine n Williams his
  110. 4:55father worked as a metallurgist and
  111. 4:57would relocate the family to Canada when
  112. 5:00Russell was only five after he was
  113. 5:02offered a position at a research

  115. 5:07Ontario Russell also had a younger
  116. 5:10brother named Harvey the family lived in
  117. 5:13the nearby community of Deep River a
  118. 5:15town built by the federal government in
  119. 5:181945 to house the families of the
  120. 5:20scientists and other workers from the
  121. 5:22nuclear research laboratory it was a
  122. 5:25very strange town built in a mostly
  123. 5:28rural area and Deep River was also known
  124. 5:31for having one of the highest ratios of
  125. 5:34phds in the country there were 130
  126. 5:37people with Doctorate Degrees in a
  127. 5:40population of 5,000 back in
  128. 5:431971 the marriage between Russell's
  129. 5:45parents was brief lasting only a few
  130. 5:48years his mother would end up filing for
  131. 5:51divorce after catching her husband
  132. 5:53having an affair with a family friend
  133. 5:56Christine would get remarried a short
  134. 5:58time after the divorce was was Final
  135. 6:00though to a man named Jerry Suka who was
  136. 6:03a nuclear engineer and who was also
  137. 6:06recently divorced weirdly enough
  138. 6:09Russell's father would also get
  139. 6:11remarried to Jerry sua's first wife
  140. 6:14Marilyn and growing up Russell and his
  141. 6:17brother Harvey would take their
  142. 6:19stepfather's last name the new blended
  143. 6:22family would eventually move to the
  144. 6:24Scarboro Bluffs area and Russell would
  145. 6:27attend Birchmount Park collegiate in
  146. 6:29Scarboro for school in
  147. 6:321979 Jerry Suka took a job in South
  148. 6:35Korea where he would be overseeing a
  149. 6:38reactor project so the entire family
  150. 6:41packed up and moved again Russell and
  151. 6:44his brother would live in South Korea
  152. 6:46for about a year before moving back to
  153. 6:49Canada where both brothers were enrolled
  154. 6:51in Upper Canada College an elite
  155. 6:54boarding school former alumni of Upper
  156. 6:57Canada College includes judges
  157. 7:00premieres Olympic athletes Road Scholars
  158. 7:04and Lieutenant Governors several former
  159. 7:07classmates remembered Russell as a quiet
  160. 7:10and hardworking student and another
  161. 7:12classmate who attended Upper Canada
  162. 7:14college with russle said that he was
  163. 7:17pretty good at flying under the radar
  164. 7:19and that most would remember him as a
  165. 7:22mysterious student and a really good
  166. 7:24musician and then there were other
  167. 7:26former classmates who remembered him as
  168. 7:28stuck up saying that he pretty much
  169. 7:31played the trumpet and kept to himself
  170. 7:34in 1982 Russell graduated from a Canada
  171. 7:38college and that same year would enroll
  172. 7:40in the University of Toronto Scarboro
  173. 7:43campus majoring in economics and
  174. 7:46political science by some horrible
  175. 7:49coincidence another man who would also
  176. 7:52go on to be one of Canada's most
  177. 7:54infamous serial killers was also
  178. 7:56enrolled at the University of Toronto
  179. 7:59scar campus and also majored in
  180. 8:02economics graduating only one year after
  181. 8:05Russell that man was none other than
  182. 8:08Paul Bernardo who for 3 years beginning
  183. 8:11in
  184. 8:121987 was terrorizing young women in the
  185. 8:15Scarboro area he gained a reputation for
  186. 8:19stalking and attacking women usually
  187. 8:21after they got off the bus at night the
  188. 8:24media would nickname him the Scaro
  189. 8:26rapist and a total of 15 attacks would
  190. 8:29later be linked to Bernardo after
  191. 8:32Williams was arrested years later a
  192. 8:35salacious article was released based on
  193. 8:37the word of unnamed police sources these
  194. 8:40sources suggested that Williams and
  195. 8:43Bernardo were friends during this time
  196. 8:45at University and not only partied
  197. 8:48together but competed with each other
  198. 8:51however other than this one random
  199. 8:54unnamed police Source no additional
  200. 8:56evidence was ever brought forward to
  201. 8:58prove these
  202. 8:59allegations bernardo's father was even
  203. 9:02interviewed who said that Paul might
  204. 9:04have bumped into a Russ salka on campus
  205. 9:07but he definitely wasn't friends with
  206. 9:09him during his last year at University
  207. 9:13Russell decided he wanted to become a
  208. 9:15pilot and enrolled in flying lessons at
  209. 9:18Buttonville Airport just north of
  210. 9:20Toronto and in 1987 Russell would
  211. 9:23graduate from the University of Toronto
  212. 9:26and that same year would enroll in the
  213. 9:29Canadian Armed Forces around this time
  214. 9:33he decided to take back his father's
  215. 9:35last name and go by Russell Williams in
  216. 9:39the late 80s while he was in Calgary
  217. 9:41Alberta he would meet a woman named Mary
  218. 9:44Elizabeth Herman she had a degree from
  219. 9:47the University of galf in applied
  220. 9:49science with a focus on nutrition and
  221. 9:52had just completed an MBA in adult

  242. 10:52considered to be a huge success
  243. 10:54resulting in Russell being promoted to
  244. 10:57Captain shortly afterwards
  245. 10:59later that year the couple would move to
  246. 11:02the east coast Russell was posted to CFB
  247. 11:05sheerwater located in Nova Scotia one of

  257. 11:34based in the national capital region for
  258. 11:37six years Russell Williams primary
  259. 11:40responsibility was flying
  260. 11:42VIPs including former prime minister
  261. 11:45stepen Harper and Jean cran the governor
  262. 11:47general of Canada and the Duke of
  263. 11:50Edinburgh in
  264. 11:521995 Russell and Mary Elizabeth
  265. 11:55purchased a home in the bedroom
  266. 11:57community of Orleans a subur subb of
  267. 11:59Ottawa the house was located on wilky
  268. 12:02drive a street that was home to many
  269. 12:05members of the military and law
  270. 12:06enforcement and the couple would live in
  271. 12:09this home for the next 13 years
  272. 12:12neighbors would say that the couple was
  273. 12:13known as quiet and polite but were very
  274. 12:16private people Mary Elizabeth was known
  275. 12:20as the more talkative of the two and
  276. 12:22would make small talk with the neighbors
  277. 12:24about golf her cat and her job but for
  278. 12:28the most part
  279. 12:29they didn't share much about their
  280. 12:31private life the two could sometimes be
  281. 12:34spotted walking hand inand around their
  282. 12:36neighborhood and Russell could also be
  283. 12:38seen jogging in the evening travel was
  284. 12:41also a part of Mary Elizabeth's job and
  285. 12:45when she arrived home from one of the
  286. 12:47many trips she made as the associate
  287. 12:49executive director of the Heart and
  288. 12:51Stroke Foundation Russell could be seen
  289. 12:54carrying her luggage into the house one
  290. 12:57of their wilky Drive Neighbors described
  291. 12:59Russell and Mary Elizabeth as the
  292. 13:01perfect power couple as they both had
  293. 13:04jobs that took them away from home
  294. 13:07sometimes for long periods of time in
  295. 13:101999 Russell was promoted to the rank of

  299. 13:21military Pilots a few years would pass
  300. 13:25and then in 2001 some unexpected family
  301. 13:28drama occurred Russell's mother and
  302. 13:31stepfather
  303. 13:33divorced because Russell's family
  304. 13:35distanced thems from the media spectacle
  305. 13:38after he was arrested no one really
  306. 13:41knows the exact conversation that took
  307. 13:43place we only know that after the
  308. 13:45divorce Russell would cut off all
  309. 13:48contact with his brother and mother
  310. 13:51friends would say that Russell never
  311. 13:52talked about it and they didn't push
  312. 13:55because the topic seemed to be off
  313. 13:57limits during the time though Russell's
  314. 14:00career would continue to progress
  315. 14:02upwards and he would receive Perfect
  316. 14:05reviews medals and
  317. 14:07promotions in 2004 after graduating with

  322. 14:24Trenton the Airbus unit that flies
  323. 14:26troops supplies and VIPs
  324. 14:30overseas however Trenton is a 3-hour
  325. 14:33drive from Ottawa where the couple lived
  326. 14:36so in August of that same year Russell
  327. 14:39and Mary Elizabeth purchased a cottage
  328. 14:41on Cozy Coop Lane in the Tiny Town of
  329. 14:43Tweed Ontario just north of Belleville
  330. 14:47Tweed was just a 40-minute drive away
  331. 14:49from Trenton and just under 2 and 1/2
  332. 14:52hours away from Ottawa over the next 16
  333. 14:55months Russell would spend most week
  334. 14:58nights alone on cozy coov Lane on
  335. 15:01weekends he either drove back to Ottawa
  336. 15:04or Mary Elizabeth would visit the
  337. 15:06cottage during his two years at the post
  338. 15:09in Trenton he took on an additional role
  339. 15:12and served 6 months as the commanding
  340. 15:14officer theater support element for Camp
  341. 15:17Mirage the secret military base in Dubai
  342. 15:20that linked Trenton to the Afghanistan
  343. 15:23war effort one of the women Russell
  344. 15:25Williams would later murder Corporal
  345. 15:27Mary France Como also served at Camp
  346. 15:30Mirage in 2001 3 years before Williams
  347. 15:34arrived after Russell returned to Canada
  348. 15:37he would continue to be promoted he took
  349. 15:40on an administrative role in Ottawa and
  350. 15:42was appointed to directorate of air
  351. 15:45requirements an agency in charge of
  352. 15:47procuring airplanes he would spend 2 and
  353. 15:501/2 years in this role reporting to
  354. 15:52Lieutenant General Angus watt The Man
  355. 15:55Who Would later recommend Russell's
  356. 15:57promotion to Colonel
  357. 16:00in September of 2007 strange Breakin
  358. 16:03enters were taking place in Tweed
  359. 16:06although in most cases the homeowners
  360. 16:08weren't even aware that someone had been
  361. 16:10in their home so most of the break-ins
  362. 16:12wouldn't be reported to police this was
  363. 16:15partially because many people in Tweed
  364. 16:17at the time didn't lock their doors
  365. 16:20there was no need to Tweed was a town
  366. 16:23with hardly any crime but now a fetish
  367. 16:26burglar was on the loose with an unusual
  368. 16:29calling card he would leave money or
  369. 16:32credit cards or other expensive items
  370. 16:34untouched but would clean out the
  371. 16:36homeowner's underwear drawers on the
  372. 16:39evening of October 19th a family came
  373. 16:42home after attending a barbecue with
  374. 16:45neighbors when they entered their home
  375. 16:47they found an intruder inside wearing a
  376. 16:50hoodie shorts and running shoes the home
  377. 16:54belonged to the daughter of Russell
  378. 16:55Williams nextdoor neighbor a man named
  379. 16:58Larry Jones
  380. 16:59the house was dark so no one was able to
  381. 17:02get a detailed description of the man
  382. 17:04before he ran off into the woods the
  383. 17:07family looked around their home and they
  384. 17:10didn't notice anything had been stolen
  385. 17:12so they initially didn't report the
  386. 17:14Breakin to the
  387. 17:16police however 10 days later they would
  388. 17:19contact authorities after hearing about
  389. 17:21another Breakin in the area and assumed
  390. 17:24the two were related even though the
  391. 17:26family was certain that nothing had been
  392. 17:29stolen from the home they couldn't have
  393. 17:31been more wrong the burglar had made off
  394. 17:34with 14 pieces of clothing including
  395. 17:36underwear bras and bathing suits and
  396. 17:40they also didn't notice that the

  433. 19:18concerned about the nature of these
  434. 19:20crimes then in October of 2008 a woman
  435. 19:24was getting ready to go to the gym when

  454. 20:16of leaves leading from the basement up
  455. 20:18to the main floor the back door was also

  476. 21:14initially the Ottawa Police had not been
  477. 21:17too concerned about the stolen
  478. 21:19lerie after all it was just
  479. 21:22underwear no one had been home when the
  480. 21:24burglar struck and at the time there
  481. 21:27were several lingerie
  482. 21:29operating in the Ottawa area which is
  483. 21:31disturbing in more ways than one one man
  484. 21:34was even spotted sneaking out of an
  485. 21:37apartment building carrying a laundry
  486. 21:39basket filled with women's underwear but
  487. 21:42by October 31st 2008 the Ottawa Police

  491. 21:54Peculiar nature of these instances the
  492. 21:57Ottawa Police wish to remind the public
  493. 21:59to be vigilant and ensure they secure
  494. 22:02their home at all times by this point 15
  495. 22:06fetish burglaries had taken place in
  496. 22:09both Orleans and Tweed all of them
  497. 22:11occurring on streets close to Russell
  498. 22:14Williams home after issuing their press
  499. 22:17release in the fall of 2008 the Ottawa
  500. 22:21Police Department would take these
  501. 22:23break-ins and theft of women's underwear
  502. 22:26seriously they began a surveillance
  503. 22:28operation hoping to catch the thief in
  504. 22:31the ACT they used unmarked Vehicles as
  505. 22:35well as undercover officers would stroll
  506. 22:37the neighborhood of Orleans throughout
  507. 22:39the evening pretending to be residents
  508. 22:41out for late night walks they also went
  509. 22:44door too and warned homeowners about the
  510. 22:46bizarre lingerie burglar the Rashia
  511. 22:49fetish break-ins in 2008 left many in
  512. 22:52the neighborhood of Orleans feeling on
  513. 22:54edge many homeowners would end up
  514. 22:57installing bars on basement windows and
  515. 23:00surveillance systems as a deterrent in
  516. 23:03early December of 2008 the owner of a
  517. 23:06home on wilky Drive was on vacation with
  518. 23:08his girlfriend who also kept many
  519. 23:11personal belongings at his house on
  520. 23:14December 10th the couple would receive a
  521. 23:16call from the homeowner's brother who
  522. 23:18was watching the house for them while
  523. 23:20they were away he informed them that the
  524. 23:23house had been broken into police were
  525. 23:25once again contacted and they would disc
  526. 23:28C footprints in the snow in the backyard
  527. 23:31the prints led directly to the patio
  528. 23:33door which was unlocked with the screen
  529. 23:35pushed open when the homeowner returned
  530. 23:39on December 14th he also found that
  531. 23:42several window locks had been damaged on
  532. 23:44the main floor nothing looked like it
  533. 23:47was missing from the home until his
  534. 23:49girlfriend checked her underwear drawer
  535. 23:52and found that 20 pieces of lingerie and
  536. 23:54seven sex toys were missing the strange
  537. 23:57underwear heists in Orleans would
  538. 24:00continue into the new year of
  539. 24:022009 from December 29th to January 2nd a
  540. 24:07family who lived on car Crescent was out
  541. 24:09of town when they arrived home their
  542. 24:1215-year-old daughter noticed that all of
  543. 24:15her underwear including bathing suits
  544. 24:18dresses tank tops and many of her
  545. 24:21photographs including head shot from
  546. 24:23modeling agencies were missing the
  547. 24:26burglar had upped the ante
  548. 24:28he made off with 68 pieces of assorted
  549. 24:32clothing the teenager also noticed that
  550. 24:35many items in her room such as paintings
  551. 24:37had been altered or moved again police
  552. 24:40were called to the home and a report was
  553. 24:43filed and while searching her bedroom
  554. 24:46for additional evidence dried seamen
  555. 24:49would also be found on top of her
  556. 24:51dresser a sample was sent to the center
  557. 24:54for forensic science however it was
  558. 24:57deemed not suitable for
  559. 24:59DNA nothing else had been taken from the
  560. 25:01home and it was clear to police that the
  561. 25:04teenager was the primary target of
  562. 25:07whoever entered the house following the
  563. 25:10Breakin the young girl was so terrified
  564. 25:13she wouldn't sleep in her bedroom and
  565. 25:15instead slept in the spare room with the
  566. 25:17family dog for the next 3 months Jim Van
  567. 25:21Allen was a criminal profiler with the
  568. 25:24Ontario Provincial Police Behavioral
  569. 25:26Science unit he would be brought in to
  570. 25:29assist the Ottawa Police with their
  571. 25:31investigation and was asked to create a
  572. 25:34criminal profile of the offender it was
  573. 25:37his opinion that the break-ins were
  574. 25:39becoming more aggressive and he was
  575. 25:41afraid the crimes would escalate further
  576. 25:44because of their sexual nature stealing
  577. 25:47underwear was one thing but the trail of
  578. 25:49mud and leaves on the floor the
  579. 25:51scattered photographs the open message
  580. 25:53on the computer screen and the bodily
  581. 25:56fluids left behind at the scene
  582. 25:58suggested to detective Van Allen that
  583. 26:01the Intruder was getting a thrill out of
  584. 26:03invading the homeowner space it was also
  585. 26:06his opinion that it was only a matter of
  586. 26:08time before the perpetrator hurt someone
  587. 26:12physically in the meantime Ottawa Police
  588. 26:15were still completely unaware that the
  589. 26:17same type of fetish break-ins were
  590. 26:19occurring over 200 km away in Tweed
  591. 26:23because Tweed was under a different
  592. 26:25police jurisdiction and the two
  593. 26:27departments were not communicating and
  594. 26:29while Ottawa Police had issued a warning
  595. 26:32to the public reminding residents to
  596. 26:34stay vigilant no alert was ever issued
  597. 26:37for the community of Tweed this was
  598. 26:40primarily because most of the break-ins
  599. 26:42in Tweed were not reported to the
  600. 26:44Ontario provincial police and they were
  601. 26:47completely unaware there was even an
  602. 26:49issue in the first
  603. 26:50place in January of 2009 Russell
  604. 26:54Williams was posted to the Canadian
  605. 26:56Forces Language School in gatau Quebec
  606. 26:59for 6 months of intensive French
  607. 27:02language training gatau is across the
  608. 27:05river from Ottawa and about a 30-minute
  609. 27:07drive away from Orleans and during this
  610. 27:10time Ottawa Police still had no suspects
  611. 27:13for the fetish break-ins and the
  612. 27:15Intruder was about to become more Brazen
  613. 27:18in April of 2009 the underwear Thief
  614. 27:22would break into the same house in Tweed
  615. 27:24three nights in a row and then hit up
  616. 27:27the same address again two more times in
  617. 27:30May and then on June 19th of 2009 The
  618. 27:34Fetish burglar broke into a home on Cara
  619. 27:37Crescent in Orleans and stole every
  620. 27:40piece of underwear in the house a
  621. 27:4224-year-old woman lived at this home
  622. 27:45with her father and the two were out of
  623. 27:47town from June 18th to the 20th before
  624. 27:51they left she made sure that a wooden
  625. 27:53dowel was lodged behind the backsliding
  626. 27:56door to keep it secure
  627. 27:58they would return home late in the
  628. 28:00evening on June 20th but didn't notice
  629. 28:03the house had been broken into until the
  630. 28:05following morning her underwear drawer
  631. 28:08had been completely emptied and she was
  632. 28:11also missing brasen underwear from the
  633. 28:13clean clothes pile as well as the dirty
  634. 28:15laundry basket dresses and bathing suits
  635. 28:18were missing from her closet and she
  636. 28:20also noticed some of her ID had been
  637. 28:23laid out on the dresser of the spare
  638. 28:25room the theft of all her underwear and
  639. 28:27other lingerie was already strange
  640. 28:30enough but she was stunned to discover
  641. 28:32that expensive jewelry she owned had not
  642. 28:35been stolen when she walked around the
  643. 28:37house to determine where the Intruder
  644. 28:40entered she noticed the wooden stick
  645. 28:42behind the back patio door had been
  646. 28:45removed a screen to a basement window
  647. 28:47was also missing and the frame had been
  648. 28:50pushed in a grand total of
  649. 28:53186 pieces of clothing were stolen from
  650. 28:56the home one month after this incident
  651. 29:00Russell Williams would be promoted to
  652. 29:02the rank of Colonel and was now the base
  653. 29:05commander of awing at CFB Trenton
  654. 29:09Canada's largest Air Force base with
  655. 29:11over 3,000 employees as well as 600
  656. 29:15civilians during times of War Ewing is
  657. 29:18where the bodies of soldiers first
  658. 29:20arrive home Arctic operations are also
  659. 29:23stationed on the base as well as
  660. 29:25disaster relief Russell was given living
  661. 29:29accommodations on the basee but he chose
  662. 29:31to stay at his Cottage on Cozy Cove Lane
  663. 29:33during the week which was a short
  664. 29:3540-minute drive away from CFB Trenton
  665. 29:39and on the weekends he would make the
  666. 29:40drive back to Ottawa or Mary Elizabeth
  667. 29:43would join him in Tweed it didn't take
  668. 29:46long after being sworn in his base
  669. 29:48commander for Russell Williams to resume
  670. 29:51his double life and after he was
  671. 29:53promoted the frequency of his break and
  672. 29:55enters did not slow down if anything
  673. 29:58they intensified there were a total of
  674. 30:0110 homes broken into during his first
  675. 30:04two months on the job in his new role as
  676. 30:07base commander a house is broken into on
  677. 30:10July 21st on Cozy Cove Lane the same
  678. 30:13street where Russell lived and a nearby

  682. 30:25of July a host on Matthew Drive and
  683. 30:28Orleans was broken into 2 days in a row
  684. 30:31the Intruder actually had the nerve to
  685. 30:34return a third time on the 27th but
  686. 30:37noticed that the homeowners were in the
  687. 30:39House 52 items were stolen from these
  688. 30:42break-ins including dozens of
  689. 30:45photographs and throughout all of this
  690. 30:47Russell Williams was able to stay on top
  691. 30:50of his duties as base commander of CFB
  692. 30:53Trenton during the month of August he
  693. 30:56kept up appearances with multiple events
  694. 30:59and charity functions he was also busy

  704. 31:28first settled as a weather station back
  705. 31:30in the
  706. 31:311950s today Canadian Armed Forces
  707. 31:35Personnel Department of National Defense
  708. 31:37employees and Environment Canada make up
  709. 31:41the entire population of CFS Alert with
  710. 31:44about 55 full-time Personnel at the
  711. 31:47station typically serving between 3 to 6
  712. 31:50months tours of Duty there Russell
  713. 31:53Williams and his group flew out to the
  714. 31:56Arctic on September 14th
  715. 31:58on an exhausting 12-hour flight each way
  716. 32:02they would land back in Trenton in the
  717. 32:04early evening of September 16th everyone
  718. 32:07who participated on that trip went
  719. 32:09straight home afterwards it was assumed
  720. 32:13that Russell Williams did too but he
  721. 32:16didn't at this point in the story he had
  722. 32:19committed more than 30 fetish break-ins
  723. 32:22in the town of Tweed alone and things
  724. 32:25were about to take a more disturbing
  725. 32:27turn
  726. 32:28in the early morning hours of September
  727. 32:3117th a young mother would be attacked in
  728. 32:34her own home she will be referred to as
  729. 32:37Jane Doe because her identity is
  730. 32:39protected by a court-ordered publication
  731. 32:42ban 20-year-old Jane lived with her
  732. 32:45boyfriend in Tweed and her two-month-old
  733. 32:47daughter although her boyfriend was a
  734. 32:49truck driver and worked out of town most
  735. 32:51nights during the week so she was
  736. 32:53usually alone with her child on
  737. 32:56September 16th between 9: and 10 p.m.
  738. 33:00Jane returned home from a visit with her
  739. 33:02mother she made sure the front door was
  740. 33:05locked but did not check the back patio
  741. 33:07door she assumed it was still locked
  742. 33:10from the previous night at around 11:00
  743. 33:13p.m. Jane would fall asleep in the
  744. 33:16middle of the night she would suddenly
  745. 33:18be woken up by someone holding down her
  746. 33:20head Jane thought she was having a bad
  747. 33:23dream at first but would quickly realize
  748. 33:26an intruder was in her home home there
  749. 33:28was a struggle and she broke a chain
  750. 33:31that was around his neck but the man was
  751. 33:33able to restrain her by pinning her down
  752. 33:36for what Jane estimated to be 30
  753. 33:39minutes she asked him if he was going to
  754. 33:42kill her the man said no but would not
  755. 33:45say what his intentions were he then
  756. 33:47asked Jane how long had she lived at
  757. 33:50that address and where the father of her
  758. 33:52child was she replied she had lived
  759. 33:55there for a month but ignored his second
  760. 33:58question refusing to answer him the man
  761. 34:02would then tie Jane up and then force
  762. 34:04her to pose as he took photographs of
  763. 34:07her he had also blindfolded her so Jane
  764. 34:10was unable to get a description of the
  765. 34:12intruder's face at one point it sounded
  766. 34:16like the man left the room and then
  767. 34:18returned but because Jan was blindfolded
  768. 34:21she couldn't be sure but it sounded to
  769. 34:24her like he was digging through her
  770. 34:26underwear drawer
  771. 34:28she would later note that several pairs
  772. 34:30of underwear and bras were missing
  773. 34:33finally the man would tell her he was
  774. 34:35leaving and wanted her to count to 300
  775. 34:39Jane got to 70 and then stopped but he
  776. 34:42was still in the home and told her to
  777. 34:44keep counting when Jane reached 200 she
  778. 34:48yelled out but no one responded she
  779. 34:51untied her blindfold and immediately
  780. 34:54called
  781. 34:55911 the time was now 3 and the morning
  782. 34:58when police arrived she told them that
  783. 35:01although she was blindfolded to her the
  784. 35:04man seemed like a dad and estimated his
  785. 35:07age to be between 30 and 50 years old he
  786. 35:11was wearing hiking boots and had a ring
  787. 35:13on his finger although she couldn't be
  788. 35:15sure which hand it was he was also
  789. 35:17wearing a tight sweater which she ripped
  790. 35:20during the struggle with her attacker he
  791. 35:23also tried to manipulate his voice when
  792. 35:25he spoke by speaking in a deep raspy
  793. 35:28voice the camera he used looked
  794. 35:31expensive and she thought he took about
  795. 35:34seven
  796. 35:35photos so police would get to work and
  797. 35:38conduct a door to-door search asking
  798. 35:41neighbors if they saw or heard anything
  799. 35:44suspicious one of the neighbors who was
  800. 35:46questioned was Larry Jones who lived
  801. 35:49next door to Russell Williams and who
  802. 35:51also lived on Cozy Cove Lane for 43
  803. 35:54years while speaking to Larry one of of
  804. 35:57the officers would ask him who owned the
  805. 36:00house next door to him when Larry told
  806. 36:03the officer Colonel Russell Williams
  807. 36:05lived there the cop initially thought
  808. 36:07that Jones was joking when he realized
  809. 36:10that Larry was being serious the officer
  810. 36:13responded quote well I guess we don't
  811. 36:16have to look at him then police
  812. 36:19continued to search the Cozy Cove Lane
  813. 36:21area including the lake for boats but
  814. 36:24found nothing or no one who seemed
  815. 36:26suspicious
  816. 36:28however when the opp forensic team
  817. 36:31arrived to Jan's a few hours later they
  818. 36:34found that a screen had been cut on one
  819. 36:36of the side windows of the home they
  820. 36:39also found that all the sheets and
  821. 36:41blankets had been stripped from Jane's
  822. 36:43bed a duvet on the floor had been
  823. 36:45stripped of its cover and a male DNA
  824. 36:48sample was found on the back of her neck
  825. 36:50Jim Van Allen of the opp who was
  826. 36:53assisting the Ottawa Police with their
  827. 36:55fetish break-ins opened a new file for
  828. 36:58Jane Doe's attack the crimes were over
  829. 37:01200 km apart and at this point there was
  830. 37:05nothing to suggest the crimes were
  831. 37:07linked because hardly any of the
  832. 37:09underwear Breakin enters and Tweed had
  833. 37:11been reported to police there was also
  834. 37:14the added conundrum of Van Allen not
  835. 37:17entirely believing that the assault
  836. 37:19happened in the first place based on
  837. 37:22Jane's statement some of the things the
  838. 37:24Intruder had said to her seemed odd to
  839. 37:27van Allan for example the man had told
  840. 37:30Jane to roll over on her tummy so he
  841. 37:33could tie her up in Van Allen's words he
  842. 37:37had never heard a sex offender used the
  843. 37:39word Tummy in his entire life after
  844. 37:43giving her statement to police Jane Doe
  845. 37:46packed up some belongings and went to
  846. 37:48stay with a friend in Belleville she
  847. 37:50would never again return to that home
  848. 37:53only a few hours after the assault on
  849. 37:55Jane Doe William was back to Keeping Up
  850. 37:58Appearances at the base he had a meeting
  851. 38:01in Belleville to discuss a charity event
  852. 38:04with members of criminal intelligence
  853. 38:06Service Ontario and watched as Kevin
  854. 38:09fast from cerg broke a Guinness World
  855. 38:12Record as he pulled a c17 globe Master
  856. 38:16down the
  857. 38:17tarmac after that the colonel visited
  858. 38:20the base engineering shop where Russell
  859. 38:22spent a couple of hours talking with the
  860. 38:25troops changing a tire doing a bit of
  861. 38:28welding and tinkering with some weapons
  862. 38:32his day would end with a barbecue back
  863. 38:34at headquarters he did all of this with
  864. 38:37little to no sleep over the course of
  865. 38:39several days and nobody suspected a
  866. 38:43thing meanwhile it didn't seem the
  867. 38:46Ontario Provincial Police appreciated
  868. 38:49the seriousness of this recent sexual
  869. 38:51assault there was a man out there
  870. 38:54targeting the homes of women who lived
  871. 38:56alone and for whatever reason the opp
  872. 39:00didn't bother issuing a safety warning
  873. 39:02to the public this in hindsight would be
  874. 39:05a huge mistake because 2 weeks later
  875. 39:08there would be another attack and Tweed
  876. 39:10normally the identity of a sexual
  877. 39:12assault victim is protected by a
  878. 39:15court-ordered publication ban however
  879. 39:18the second victim Lori masot would apply
  880. 39:21to have the publication ban on her
  881. 39:23identity lifted in an interview with CBC
  882. 39:26News she said that speaking out about
  883. 39:29the assault was part of her personal
  884. 39:31healing on September 30th 2009
  885. 39:3546-year-old Lori mazot was curled up on
  886. 39:38her couch watching Law and Order and
  887. 39:41Without a Trace she was exhausted after
  888. 39:44a busy day of cleaning and rearranging
  889. 39:46furniture and at some point in the
  890. 39:48evening would fall asleep on the couch
  891. 39:52when she woke up hours later she was
  892. 39:54being hit in the head with a flashlight
  893. 39:56and smother by a blanket and she also
  894. 39:59heard a man's voice saying that a gang
  895. 40:01was in her house and she was being
  896. 40:04robbed then the Intruder did something
  897. 40:06odd after Lori told him that she had a
  898. 40:09headache from being hit the man got her
  899. 40:12a glass of water and an aspirin he would
  900. 40:15then blindfold and restrain Lori and
  901. 40:18then cut the clothes off her body with a
  902. 40:20large knife for an agonizing 3 and 1
  903. 40:23half hours the Intruder would force Lori
  904. 40:26to pose while he photographed her after
  905. 40:30the man fled the scene she managed to
  906. 40:32call
  907. 40:33911 however Lori was left tied up in a
  908. 40:37makeshift straight jacket her arms were
  909. 40:40cinched to her sides and she was forced
  910. 40:42to stay like this for another 5
  911. 40:45hours police apparently told her they
  912. 40:48needed to wait for op photographers to
  913. 40:51take pictures of her restraints first
  914. 40:54during this time she was still naked
  915. 40:56with a comforter on top of her and would
  916. 40:59say that she was denied medical
  917. 41:01attention when Lori was finally untied
  918. 41:05she was allowed to put on a bathrobe and
  919. 41:07was taken outside to wait for another 3
  920. 41:09hours while the police searched her
  921. 41:11house for evidence the opp seriously
  922. 41:15bungled this investigation while
  923. 41:17questioning neighbors of Lori they let
  924. 41:19it slip out that they thought she was
  925. 41:21lying and was trying to copy the first
  926. 41:24attack on Jane Doe except that Lori
  927. 41:27didn't know anything about the attack on
  928. 41:29Jane Doe nobody did because the police
  929. 41:33never issued a media release regarding
  930. 41:35the incident Lori would then be
  931. 41:38interviewed by police she told them that
  932. 41:41the man was between 30 and 40 years of
  933. 41:43age and she thought she had heard his
  934. 41:45voice before finally police would
  935. 41:49confess to her they had been
  936. 41:50investigating a similar incident that
  937. 41:53occurred only 2 weeks earlier but they
  938. 41:56didn't warn the public public telling
  939. 41:58her quote we're very sorry we didn't get
  940. 42:01this out to the public I can guarantee
  941. 42:04you this will make the news tomorrow
  942. 42:06morning the next day as police cruisers
  943. 42:09still surrounded Lorie's house Russell
  944. 42:12Williams would ask another neighbor what
  945. 42:14all the commotion was about he then
  946. 42:17headed to work where he awarded a
  947. 42:19service medal to a fellow Airman and met
  948. 42:22with engineering officials to discuss
  949. 42:25ongoing construction projects at the Bas
  950. 42:28by this stage 58 break-ins and thefts of
  951. 42:31underwear had occurred in the Tweed and
  952. 42:33Ottawa areas many of them occurred on
  953. 42:36Cozy Cove Lane the same street where
  954. 42:38Russell Williams lived in Tweed and most
  955. 42:41of these break-ins occurred on Friday
  956. 42:43and Saturday nights investigators still
  957. 42:46had no reason to consider Williams a
  958. 42:48suspect instead they were focusing on
  959. 42:52his nextdoor neighbor Larry Jones
  960. 42:54because Lori mazot had told police her
  961. 42:57attacker's voice sounded like Larry's on
  962. 43:00October 29th 2009 Larry Jones had
  963. 43:04returned home from a partridge hunt only
  964. 43:07to find his house crawling with OP
  965. 43:09officers who had executed a search
  966. 43:11warrant they informed him that he was a
  967. 43:14suspect in the attacks on both women and
  968. 43:17that they were looking for thong
  969. 43:18underwear bras and a baby blanket which
  970. 43:22were some of the items missing from the
  971. 43:24victim's homes Jones would also agreed
  972. 43:27to be interviewed by police as well as
  973. 43:30provide fingerprints DNA and was also
  974. 43:33subjected to a 3-hour
  975. 43:35polygraph uh my dog and I come back from
  976. 43:37prac C in the Jeep and uh we pulled into
  977. 43:39our road here and noticed a lot of cars
  978. 43:42that our at our house and I said God
  979. 43:43looks like a party going on that I
  980. 43:45wasn't invited to and got a little
  981. 43:47closer and I noticed one of the op
  982. 43:48markings on the vehicle had been painted
  983. 43:50over and I said geez it looks like
  984. 43:52police are here so I got closer pulled
  985. 43:54in the driveway two officers dressed in
  986. 43:56Suits come out the door and uh they uh
  987. 44:00uh said you Larry Jones said yes uh well
  988. 44:03we have a search warrant for your house
  989. 44:04and they fash this paper at me and and
  990. 44:07uh I said what's going on he say well we
  991. 44:09can't tell you right now I want you to
  992. 44:11come in the house and unlock your safes
  993. 44:13and I and I they they pushed the paper
  994. 44:15in my hand which apparently was a search
  995. 44:16warrant and I started to look at it and
  996. 44:19he said you haven't got time to look at
  997. 44:20that now we want you downstairs so no
  998. 44:21safe so follow me so I started in he put
  999. 44:24his hand on my elbow and kind of guided
1000. 44:26me in so far and I was looking around
1001. 44:27what's going on and I asked him a couple
1002. 44:29times well did my house get broken into
1003. 44:32or what's going on here and he said I
1004. 44:33can't tell you so it took it downstairs
1005. 44:35and uh unlocked all the safes and uh our
1006. 44:38gun safes and stuff ammunition safe and
1007. 44:41uh then they said Well we'd like to take
1008. 44:43you over made off for questioning so
1009. 44:44they escorted me back outside and uh
1010. 44:47with the hand on my elbow through the
1011. 44:49door and put me in this car and took me
  1012. 44:52to M out for questioning which I didn't
1013. 44:54think I had any choice in the matter cuz
  1014. 44:56they seemed like they they're quite
  1015. 44:57forceful in what they're doing and
1016. 44:58they're going to do it either that or
1017. 44:59handcuffs me and take me away so I went
1018. 45:02voluntarily CU I had done nothing wrong
1019. 45:04and uh on the way to Mok they uh told me
1020. 45:07that uh that I may be a suspect for the
1021. 45:10two uh two assaults down the road and I
1022. 45:13said you got to be kidding I just woke
  1023. 45:15passed out I couldn't believe it and I
1024. 45:18said well I had nothing to do with this
1025. 45:19I said and you won't find anything in my
1026. 45:21house that had anything to do with this
1027. 45:23and uh went to made up for a three and a
  1028. 45:25half hour interrogation
1029. 45:27it was quit an ordeal according to Larry
1030. 45:30his family was endlessly harassed by
1031. 45:33police for weeks before they realized he
1032. 45:36wasn't the right suspect the same day
1033. 45:39Jones was being interrogated by police
1034. 45:41Russell Williams was once again posing
1035. 45:44for a photo op this time with former
1036. 45:47General Rick Hillier at a store at CFB
1037. 45:50Trenton where Hillier was plugging his
1038. 45:53book several weeks would pass before the
1039. 45:56attacker would strike again he was well
1040. 45:59aware the police had opened an
  1041. 46:01investigation regarding both assaults
1042. 46:03and tweet and was laying low at least
  1043. 46:07for
  1044. 46:08now November 17th 2009 was an Marson
  1045. 46:12Cook's 48th birthday Anne lived in a
1046. 46:16rural area just outside of Belleville a
  1047. 46:19town of 50,000 about halfway between
1048. 46:21Toronto and Ottawa her home sat just off
1049. 46:25of Highway 37 and she lived here with
1050. 46:28her husband who often worked out of town
1051. 46:30on business an had been away from her
1052. 46:33house the previous evening on the
1053. 46:35afternoon of the 17th she arrived home
1054. 46:38to change her clothes for her birthday
  1055. 46:40party that evening at a friend's house
1056. 46:43as she was getting ready she noticed her
1057. 46:45dresser drawers beside her bed were open
1058. 46:48and all of her sex toys were gone at
1059. 46:51first Anne thought it was a prank when
1060. 46:53her neighbor Howard gray arrived to pick
1061. 46:55her up for the evening she asked him if
1062. 46:58she should call the police but Howard
1063. 47:00would talk her out of reporting the
1064. 47:02Breakin and said that the missing sex
1065. 47:04toys would only be a huge laugh down at
1066. 47:07the police station and that they
  1067. 47:09wouldn't take it
1068. 47:10seriously an knew about the attacks and
1069. 47:13Tweed but at the time wouldn't connect
1070. 47:16these crimes to her stolen sex toys it
1071. 47:19was decided that Anne would sleep at
1072. 47:21Howard's house that evening but before
1073. 47:23they left they would walk around her
1074. 47:25home and make sure every door and window
1075. 47:28was locked first when an returned home
1076. 47:31the next morning she would discover that
1077. 47:33her underwear drawers were open and all
1078. 47:35of it was missing 116 pieces to be exact
1079. 47:40and an older computer had also been
1080. 47:42turned on in her office the screen saver
1081. 47:45had been disabled and a Word document
1082. 47:48was open with a chilling message typed
1083. 47:50out in large font it read go ahead phone
1084. 47:54the police I want to show the judge
1085. 47:56you're really big dildos the message
1086. 47:59indicated that the Intruder had been
1087. 48:00hiding somewhere in the house when Anne
1088. 48:03returned home to change her clothes the
1089. 48:04day before and had overheard the
1090. 48:06conversation with her neighbor this time
1091. 48:09Anne would report the Breakin to the
1092. 48:12Belleville Police and she started to
1093. 48:14suspect it could have some connection to
1094. 48:17the crimes taking place in tweet but
1095. 48:19when Belleville police came to her house
1096. 48:21to search for evidence they could only
1097. 48:23find a partial fingerprint that could be
1098. 48:25of interest and when Anne asked the
  1099. 48:28police if the break-ins could possibly
1100. 48:30be related to the attacks and Tweed cops
1101. 48:32didn't know what she was talking about
1102. 48:34even though Tweed was only a short drive
1103. 48:37away the Belleville Police and the
1104. 48:39Ontario Provincial Police were also not
1105. 48:42communicating an Marson cook had dodged
1106. 48:44a bullet that night only one week later
1107. 48:48the Intruder would graduate from
1108. 48:50stealing underwear and sex toys to
  1109. 48:52becoming a
  1110. 48:53killer 37-year-old Corporal Mary friend
1111. 48:57KO was born in Quebec City but grew up
1112. 49:00in various places spending parts of her
1113. 49:03childhood in Quebec New Brunswick and
1114. 49:06Germany she was from a military family
1115. 49:09with her father grandfather and four
1116. 49:12other family members all serving and she
1117. 49:15would eventually follow in their
1118. 49:17Footsteps in 1995 Mary France joined the
1119. 49:21reserves and by the early 2000s she was
1120. 49:24part of operation Apollo which was
1121. 49:27Canada's first deployment of military
  1122. 49:29personnel to
  1123. 49:31Afghanistan in 2008 after serving over a
1124. 49:34decade in the armed forces Mary France
  1125. 49:37became a flight attendant with 437
1126. 49:40transport squadron at CFB Trenton Mary
  1127. 49:43France lived alone in a developing
1128. 49:45neighborhood in Brighton Ontario that
1129. 49:47was home to many military members one
1130. 49:50cooworker who worked with Mary France at
1131. 49:53CFB Trenton described her as a wonderful
1132. 49:55person who was is always smiling in
  1133. 49:58November of 2009 she would accompany
1134. 50:01Prime Minister Steven Harper on a round
1135. 50:03World trip to Japan Singapore and India
1136. 50:08this would be her final mission after
1137. 50:11returning home from this trip Corporal
1138. 50:13KO noticed that someone had been through
1139. 50:15her underwear drawer she blamed her
1140. 50:18boyfriend Paul who would strongly deny
1141. 50:20it on the evening of November 23rd Mary
1142. 50:24France spoke to Paul on the phone before
1143. 50:26going to bed and the two would make
1144. 50:28plans to meet for dinner the following
1145. 50:30night but Mary France didn't show up and
  1146. 50:33she wasn't answering her phone by
  1147. 50:36November 25th Paul was becoming
1148. 50:38concerned for her welfare so he drove to
1149. 50:41Mary Francis House and knocked on her
1150. 50:43front door her car was in the driveway
1151. 50:47but she didn't answer the door finally
1152. 50:50Paul would go to the back of the house
1153. 50:52where he found the back patio door
1154. 50:54unlocked he would be the one to discover
1155. 50:57Mary France's body on her bed wrapped in
1156. 51:00a duvet her death was Brighton's first
1157. 51:04homicide in over 30 years there were
1158. 51:07initial police reports that her death
  1159. 51:09was a suspected suicide which was just a
1160. 51:12ridiculous assumption an autopsy report
1161. 51:16showed that she had suffered at least
1162. 51:18five blows to her head there were blood
1163. 51:20drops all over the basement floor where
1164. 51:23it was clear that a struggle had
1165. 51:24occurred and there were also blood
1166. 51:26stains on the floor in a pattern
1167. 51:29consistent with blood soaked hair
1168. 51:31Footprints and blood were also
1169. 51:33discovered in the basement as well as an
1170. 51:36obvious dent in the drywall at the
1171. 51:38bottom of the basement stairs Mary
1172. 51:40France had been badly beaten and had
1173. 51:43definitely put up a fight with her
1174. 51:44attacker there were also remnants of
1175. 51:47tape on her face suggesting that her
1176. 51:49nose and mouth had been covered at one
1177. 51:52point and wide ligature marks were left
1178. 51:55on her wrists made by a restraint at
1179. 51:58least half an inch wide but when the
1180. 52:00police realized they were dealing with a
1181. 52:02murder they told the public there was no
1182. 52:04need for concern thinking they were
  1183. 52:07dealing with a domestic violence issue
1184. 52:09her boyfriend Paul was immediately
1185. 52:12considered the main suspect there were
  1186. 52:14rumors the two weren't getting along
1187. 52:17however he had an airtight Alibi and
1188. 52:19passed a polygraph her former common law
1189. 52:22partner Al was also interviewed and
  1190. 52:25cleared by police
1191. 52:27again police had no reason at least not
1192. 52:30yet anyway to connect the slaying of
1193. 52:32Corporal Mary France Como to Russell
1194. 52:35Williams or the Tweet assaults but the
1195. 52:38initial op press release seemed to
1196. 52:41contradict the violent bloody crime
1197. 52:43scene that was left behind in her house
1198. 52:47it read quote there are presently no
1199. 52:50issues with regards to Public Safety
  1200. 52:53that didn't do much to ease people's
  1201. 52:55nerves and brighten
1202. 52:57but police weren't saying much else they
1203. 53:00wouldn't release Mary Francis cause of
1204. 53:02death as it was their hold back evidence
1205. 53:05and the public was also unaware that a
1206. 53:08bloodied Footwear impression had also
1207. 53:10been left behind male DNA belonging to
1208. 53:13their suspect was also found on the sink
1209. 53:15of her bathroom the day after Mary
  1210. 53:18France colo's body was discovered was
1211. 53:21business as usual for Russell Williams
1212. 53:24he took part in a charity event at the
1213. 53:26bay called jail and bail where he was
1214. 53:28photographed smiling after being mock
1215. 53:31arrested for being too young to be a
  1216. 53:32wing
  1217. 53:33Commander a few days before Mary Fran's
  1218. 53:36funeral her father would receive a
1219. 53:38letter from base commander Colonel
  1220. 53:40Russell
1221. 53:41Williams it read Dear Mr KO I would like
1222. 53:46to take this opportunity on behalf of
1223. 53:48the men and women at Ewing Trenton to
1224. 53:51express my sincere condolences on the
1225. 53:53tragic death of your daughter Mary

1227. 53:58compassionate woman who earned the
1228. 54:00respect of all with whom she came into
1229. 54:02contact she set high standards for
1230. 54:05herself and others and was devoted to
1231. 54:07the well-being of those around her Mary

1234. 54:15please let me know whether there is
1235. 54:17anything I can do to help during this
1236. 54:19very difficult time you and your family
1237. 54:21are inner thoughts and prayers our
1238. 54:24dearest sympathy David Russell Williams
  1239. 54:28on December 4th Mary France kom's
1240. 54:31funeral service was held and attended by
1241. 54:33hundreds of friends and family and
1242. 54:36military personnel despite his offer of
1243. 54:39support Russell Williams did not attend
1244. 54:41her funeral service she would be buried
1245. 54:44at the National military cemetery in
1246. 54:47Ottawa a Facebook page set up in her
1247. 54:50memory described Mary France as Charming
1248. 54:53intelligent Sparky bubbly generous funny
  1249. 54:58reliable and
1250. 54:59hardworking meanwhile life for Russell
1251. 55:02Williams will be busy in the months of
1252. 55:04December 2009 and into the new year in
1253. 55:08mid December Russell and his wife moved
1254. 55:11from the home on wilky drive to a new
1255. 55:13home on Edison Avenue in Westboro where
1256. 55:16Mary Elizabeth would live during the
1257. 55:18week and Russell would continue to stay
1258. 55:20at the cottage he also attended a press
1259. 55:23conference for the Olympic torch relay
1260. 55:26issued his Christmas message to the base
1261. 55:29and was honored with the Canadian
1262. 55:30forces's first clasp an award that
  1263. 55:33recognizes military members with 22
1264. 55:36years of service and then on January
  1265. 55:3812th 2010 a massive earthquake struck
1266. 55:42the country of Haiti killing over
1267. 55:44200,000 people Russell was in charge of
1268. 55:47the relief operation and managing the
  1269. 55:50deployment of over 2,000 soldiers and
1270. 55:53thousands of kilog of food water and
  1271. 55:56medical supplies on January 17th the
1272. 56:00defense minister Peter McCay and the
1273. 56:02chief of the defense staff Walter ntini
1274. 56:06stopped by for their tour of CFB Trenton
1275. 56:09where they met with Russell and watched
1276. 56:11the troops load relief supplies Bound
1277. 56:14for Haiti only 11 days later Jessica
  1278. 56:17Lloyd would go
  1279. 56:19missing 27-year-old Jessica Elizabeth
1280. 56:22Lloyd was born in Ottawa her dad was in
  1281. 56:25the na
1282. 56:26he would pass away from cancer when
1283. 56:29Jessica was only 14 she graduated from
  1284. 56:32quinty Secondary School in 2000 and
1285. 56:35studied business administration at Lola
1286. 56:38college she had an older brother Andy
1287. 56:41who would describe his sister as a witty
1288. 56:44very social person with lots of friends
1289. 56:47one friend would say Jessica had a
1290. 56:49unique sense of humor and was quick with
1291. 56:52the onliners and funny comments life was
1292. 56:55going well for Jessica she had found a
1293. 56:58career as a Transit planner at tri board
1294. 57:00student transportation services and she
1295. 57:03had just purchased her childhood home
1296. 57:05from her mother roxan a year earlier on
  1297. 57:08the evening of January 28th 2010 Jessica
  1298. 57:12went over to a friend's house to watch a
1299. 57:14movie later when she returned home she
1300. 57:18sent that friend a text message to let
1301. 57:20them know she arrived home safely the
  1302. 57:23time was
1303. 57:2410:36 this would be the last time anyone
1304. 57:27heard from Jessica again the next day
1305. 57:31when she failed to show up for work her
  1306. 57:33co-workers immediately sensed that
1307. 57:35something was wrong she had worked for
1308. 57:38this company for 2 years and had never
1309. 57:40once arrived late she was known as
  1310. 57:43someone who was responsible Jessica's
1311. 57:45mother Roxanne used to work for the same
1312. 57:48company so her co-workers reached out to
1313. 57:51her to see if she knew anything about
1314. 57:53Jessica's whereabouts both Rox and and
1315. 57:56Andy would go over to Jessica's house to
1316. 57:59check up on her when they arrived they
  1317. 58:01found Jessica's car parked in the
1318. 58:03driveway the doors were locked and there
1319. 58:06was no sign the house had been broken
1320. 58:08into all of her possessions were inside
1321. 58:11the home including her car keys cell
1322. 58:14phone purse wallet eyeglasses and
1323. 58:19identification also Jessica lived alone
1324. 58:22on the outskirts of town so she wouldn't
1325. 58:25have gone anywhere without without her
1326. 58:26car which was parked in the driveway her
1327. 58:29family then contacted Belleville Police
  1328. 58:32and a missing person's investigation was
1329. 58:34opened from the beginning the police
1330. 58:37took this case seriously and considered
  1331. 58:40her disappearance
  1332. 58:41suspicious a ground search commenced
1333. 58:44that included members of the Belleville
1334. 58:46Tactical Team the ATV unit and the
  1335. 58:50auxiliary police unit a forensic team
1336. 58:53was also dispatched to the house to look
  1337. 58:55for Clues
1338. 58:56and the opp also conducted an aerial
1339. 58:59search over Belleville the CFB Trenton
1340. 59:02search and rescue helicopter also aided
1341. 59:05in the search for Jessica which would
1342. 59:07have had to have been approved by
  1343. 59:09Colonel Russell
1344. 59:11Williams a public alert was also issued
1345. 59:14to warn women in the area living alone
1346. 59:17to take extra precautions when securing
1347. 59:20their home and to change their personal
1348. 59:23routine in the meantime the the
1349. 59:26community rallied around the Lloyd
1350. 59:28family and dropped everything to search
1351. 59:30for Jessica friends and family of
1352. 59:33Jessica Lloyd and hundreds of volunteers
1353. 59:36handed out missing persons posters in
1354. 59:38Belleville and the surrounding area and
1355. 59:41a Facebook group dedicated to finding
1356. 59:44Jessica grew to over 45,000 people in an
1357. 59:48interview with the crimebeat podcast
1358. 59:51Andy spoke about how he discovered tire
1359. 59:53tracks and footprints in the snow in the
1360. 59:56field near Jessica's house and that the
1361. 59:59footprints were leading straight to her
1362. 1:00:01home the night before in the early
  1363. 1:00:04morning hours of January 29th around
  1364. 1:00:073:00 a.m. a man named Lyle Barker and
1365. 1:00:10his cousin were driving South down
  1366. 1:00:13Highway 37 going past Jessica's house he
1367. 1:00:17would spot an SUV parked in a field
1368. 1:00:20nearby he thought the vehicle looked
1369. 1:00:22suspicious it was quite a distance from
1370. 1:00:25the road and the nearest house and given
1371. 1:00:28that it was the middle of winter and the
1372. 1:00:30middle of the night the car looked at a
1373. 1:00:33place when the two men returned a few
1374. 1:00:35days later they saw the missing person's
1375. 1:00:38posters of Jessica in the area as well
1376. 1:00:41as the police presence around her home
1377. 1:00:43and they immediately reported what they
1378. 1:00:45saw in the field that night to the
1379. 1:00:47Belleville Police what they saw would be
1380. 1:00:50corroborated by another witness who also
  1381. 1:00:53spotted the SUV around 9:30 p.m. on
  1382. 1:00:57January 28th when Jessica was out
  1383. 1:01:00visiting a friend a Belleville Police
1384. 1:01:02Officer spotted that same suspicious
1385. 1:01:05vehicle parked in the field beside
1386. 1:01:07Jessica's house she stopped and knocked
1387. 1:01:10on Jessica's door but of course nobody
1388. 1:01:13was home at the time she made notes
1389. 1:01:15about the vehicle but for whatever
  1390. 1:01:17reason she didn't write down the
1391. 1:01:19vehicle's make or license plate number
1392. 1:01:22although at this time she really didn't
1393. 1:01:25have a reason to to do so at this point
1394. 1:01:27in the story it was just a random car in
1395. 1:01:30a field it hadn't been linked to a crime
1396. 1:01:33not yet anyway what that officer didn't
1397. 1:01:36know was that the owner of the SUV was a
1398. 1:01:40predator who at that very moment was in
1399. 1:01:43Jessica's backyard waiting for her to
1400. 1:01:46arrive home in hindsight not writing
  1401. 1:01:50down the vehicle's make and license
1402. 1:01:52plate number was a mistake that would
1403. 1:01:54come back to haunt the Belleville Police
1404. 1:01:57Department the next morning Jessica
1405. 1:01:59Lloyd would be reported missing and a
1406. 1:02:02simple license plate search would have
1407. 1:02:04led police to Russell Williams Tweed
1408. 1:02:06Cottage where she was being held captive
1409. 1:02:10there was also the added conundrum of
1410. 1:02:12the three police departments not
  1411. 1:02:14communicating with each other Jessica's
  1412. 1:02:17disappearance initially wasn't linked to
1413. 1:02:19the sexual assault cases and tweet or
1414. 1:02:22the murder of Mary France KO in Brighton
1415. 1:02:25or the break-ins and theft of underwear
  1416. 1:02:28in Belleville Tweed and
1417. 1:02:30Orleans this would all change however
1418. 1:02:33when the Belleville Police Department
1419. 1:02:35realized they were in over their head
1420. 1:02:37and needed help with their
1421. 1:02:39investigation they would reach out to
1422. 1:02:41the Ontario Provincial Police for
1423. 1:02:43assistance and possible links to other
1424. 1:02:45crimes the op were already investigating
1425. 1:02:49the murder of Mary France comoo the
1426. 1:02:51sexual assaults against Lori mazot and
  1427. 1:02:53Jane Doe and the fetish break-in
1428. 1:02:56and they also had access to what was
1429. 1:02:58known as the viass database viass stands
1430. 1:03:02for the violent crime linkage system the
  1431. 1:03:05database was developed during the 1980s
1432. 1:03:09as a way to look for links in unsolved
1433. 1:03:11cases and is mostly used by the
1434. 1:03:14RCMP the similarities between these
  1435. 1:03:17cases and Jessica Lloyd's disappearance
1436. 1:03:20couldn't be ignored all of these crimes
1437. 1:03:23occurred at night all of them involved
1438. 1:03:25breaking into homes and all of these
  1439. 1:03:28crimes occurred within an hour's Drive
1440. 1:03:31of each other the military had also open
1441. 1:03:34their own investigation into the murder
1442. 1:03:37of Mary France Como and it would take
1443. 1:03:39the cooperation of local provincial and
1444. 1:03:42military police before an arrest would
1445. 1:03:45be made to protect their evidence and
  1446. 1:03:47their case police typically don't like
1447. 1:03:50to share information with other police
1448. 1:03:53agencies however they also risked
1449. 1:03:55botching the investigation by not
1450. 1:03:58talking to each other one of the most
1451. 1:04:00important Clues left behind in this case
1452. 1:04:03were the tire tracks left in the mud in
1453. 1:04:05the field where the SUV was spotted
1454. 1:04:09after Consulting with multiple tire
1455. 1:04:11shops as well as the Yukon RCMP database
1456. 1:04:15of over 1,100 Tire Impressions it was
1457. 1:04:19confirmed the tire tracks belong to a
1458. 1:04:21Toyo Open Country HT the tires and the
1459. 1:04:26list of SUVs were fed into a provincial
  1460. 1:04:29database which produced a list of 450
1461. 1:04:33potential vehicles that could belong to
  1462. 1:04:35the suspect on February 4th 2009
1463. 1:04:40Belleville Police assisted by members of
1464. 1:04:43the Ontario Provincial Police set up a
  1465. 1:04:46checkpoint on Highway 37 and for 11
1466. 1:04:49hours Stop drivers throughout the night
1467. 1:04:52Sergeant Julie forel of the Belleville
1468. 1:04:55Police Poli told the media that the
1469. 1:04:57roadside stops were being done to find
1470. 1:05:00information that might help with their
1471. 1:05:03investigation and to speak with anyone
1472. 1:05:05who might have been on Highway 37 the
1473. 1:05:08previous Thursday evening or Friday
1474. 1:05:11morning this was only partially true
1475. 1:05:14what police didn't release to the public
1476. 1:05:17was they were searching for an SUV with
1477. 1:05:20Toyo Open Country HT tires a very
1478. 1:05:23unusual type of Tire Trad
  1479. 1:05:26the roadblock wasn't even completely set
1480. 1:05:28up yet when police spotted a vehicle
1481. 1:05:31with tires that looked like an exact
1482. 1:05:33match Belleville police officers would
  1483. 1:05:36pull over a silver 2001 Nissen
1484. 1:05:40Pathfinder driven by Colonel Russell
1485. 1:05:43Williams the colonel would identify
1486. 1:05:45himself to police as the commander of
1487. 1:05:48Trenton base while a second officer in
1488. 1:05:51the meantime studied his vehicle the
1489. 1:05:54officer who was speaking with Russell
  1490. 1:05:56that evening initially wasn't suspicious
