  4. 0:09next terrorist strike now in a stirring
  5. 0:12account best-selling author and host of
  6. 0:13war stories on fox lieutenant colonel
  7. 0:16oliver north is telling their stories in
  8. 0:18his new book american heroes in the
  9. 0:20fight against radical islam colonel
  10. 0:22north welcome to newsmax thank you
  11. 0:24kathleen great to be with you you've
  12. 0:26written quite a few books why this one
  13. 0:29well first of all my boss told me to
  14. 0:31write it so since i worked for roger
  15. 0:32ailes at fox news channel and he told me
  16. 0:35i want a book about these young
  17. 0:36americans that i'm privileged to be able
  18. 0:38to cover i said aye aye sir like a good
  19. 0:40marine
  20. 0:42it was also a work of love because uh
  21. 0:45it's it's my great blessing to be able
  22. 0:47to keep company with heroes and that's
  23. 0:49all i do my only beat for fox news or
  24. 0:52soldiers sailors airmen guardsmen and
  25. 0:54marines so
  26. 0:56i get to keep company with heroes guys
  27. 0:58that wear flak jackets and helmets and
  28. 0:59flight suits to work why is
  29. 1:01documentation of these stories in your
  30. 1:03book and on your program on fox why are
  31. 1:05they so important well because it's part
  32. 1:08of what we are as a people i mean the
  33. 1:09commitment that's been made by this
  34. 1:11nation to offer others the hope of
  35. 1:12freedom is a very important part of who
  36. 1:15we are
  37. 1:16and the historical record of what they
  38. 1:18do and how they do it and the remarkable
  39. 1:21sacrifices they've made is important to
  40. 1:23the future it's also important to them i
  41. 1:26tell young americans that if you know
  42. 1:28someone who's serving they really ought
  43. 1:30to have a copy of this book so that
  44. 1:3210 15 years from now when one of their
  45. 1:35youngsters comes up and says
  46. 1:37you know mom or dad what did you do in
  47. 1:39this war
  48. 1:40there is the first draft of the history
  49. 1:42of this war and it begins on 9 11 0-1
  50. 1:46these are all the volunteers of 9 11.
  51. 1:49they came because they knew they were
  52. 1:51going to go to a war and they believed
  53. 1:52what they were doing was important
  54. 1:54and unfortunately as you know most of
  55. 1:57our colleagues in the business do not
  56. 1:59report the good news
  57. 2:01they don't report the remarkable
  58. 2:02sacrifices that they're making there's a
  59. 2:04lot of criticism both politically and in
  60. 2:06the media and it is a part of the great
  61. 2:09legacy of this country you tell a lot of
  62. 2:11inspiring stories in the book one of the
  63. 2:13accounts in your book is that of a
  64. 2:15member of the cia's ultra secret special
  65. 2:17activities division mike spann who with
  66. 2:20american forces supported the northern
  67. 2:22alliance troops in operation enduring
  68. 2:24freedom talk to us about him who who was
  69. 2:26he and what is it that he did that was
  70. 2:28so heroic mike spann was first of all
  71. 2:31u.s marine he then left the marine corps
  72. 2:34and went to the agency
  73. 2:35he was a special activities division
  74. 2:37officer
  75. 2:38and became the first american casualty
  76. 2:40the first american killed
  77. 2:42in this war against radical islam he was
  78. 2:44interrogating
  79. 2:46detainees at mazzari sharif when a
  80. 2:49rebellion occurred
  81. 2:51the northern alliance troops that were
  82. 2:53there with him and a handful of u.s
  83. 2:54special forces were not enough to
  84. 2:57contain it they murdered him in the
  85. 2:59process
  86. 3:00mike spann was one of those young
  87. 3:02americans who committed himself to the
  88. 3:04freedom of this country the the future
  89. 3:06of this country
  90. 3:07you were assigned to the national
  91. 3:09security council staff under the reagan
  92. 3:10administration and was this country's
  93. 3:12counter-terrorism coordinator what
  94. 3:14concerns you the most about the
  95. 3:16direction this country is going in with
  96. 3:18regard to its national security and
  97. 3:20foreign policy
  98. 3:22well you know first of all full
  99. 3:23disclosure you know we missed the
  100. 3:25explosion of radical islam that began
  101. 3:27and
  102. 3:28basically when the ayatollah khomeini
  103. 3:30returned to iran from paris
  104. 3:331979.
  105. 3:34we could enumerate you know on a view
  106. 3:37graph the wire diagrams of all the
  107. 3:40terrorist organizations in the world
  108. 3:42but we didn't see the explosion of
  109. 3:44radical islam and of course we witnessed
  110. 3:46that live in many cases on television on
  111. 3:499 1101 it had actually begun well before
  112. 3:52that
  113. 3:53the declaration of war that was made by
  114. 3:55osama bin laden against the united
  115. 3:57states as early as 1993 was missed by
  116. 4:00the clinton administration
  117. 4:02and the bush administration set out to
  118. 4:04basically
  119. 4:06stop this movement in its tracks
  120. 4:08initially in afghanistan and
  121. 4:09subsequently in iraq and of course in
  122. 4:12other places around the world that we've
  123. 4:13been to with these young americans like
  124. 4:15the southern philippines
  125. 4:17we now see that that that movement
  126. 4:20has been severely disrupted certainly in
  127. 4:22afghanistan and iraq but it still has
  128. 4:25legs as they say colonel north when you
  129. 4:27see our men and women in uniform
  130. 4:29sacrificing so much and many paying the
  131. 4:31ultimate price um and you have president
  132. 4:33obama on the other hand apologizing for
  133. 4:35our response to september 11th what goes
  134. 4:38through your mind i think it's
  135. 4:39unconscionable
  136. 4:40i mean
  137. 4:41if you look at this country and what we
  138. 4:43have done
  139. 4:44to offer others the hope of freedom
  140. 4:46america has never been a colonial power
  141. 4:48we've never occupied another country
  142. 4:50intending to keep it for gold or oil or
  143. 4:53colonial conquest
  144. 4:54this is a nation of very good people
  145. 4:57particularly those who serve in uniform
  146. 4:59and my hope is that this president will
  147. 5:01eventually come to recognize that first
  148. 5:04of all they've all but won in iraq and
  149. 5:07that what needs to be done isn't to go
  150. 5:09around america around the world
  151. 5:11apologizing for america but reasserting
  152. 5:14the innate goodness of this country
  153. 5:16which is exhibited day in and day out
  154. 5:19the judeo-christian values of the young
  155. 5:22americans who in one second can be
  156. 5:24engaged in a deadly firefight and just
  157. 5:26minutes later be giving a hungry iraqi
  158. 5:29or afghan kid his last ration
  159. 5:32or helping an iraqi woman or an afghan
  160. 5:35woman
  161. 5:37in demonstrating that americans have
  162. 5:39become the protectors of muslim women
  163. 5:41that's after all ultimately how we're
  164. 5:43going to win
  165. 5:44and my hope is that this administration
  166. 5:46comes to recognize that their sacrifice
  167. 5:49is what's made us a safer country
  168. 5:51there's been a big debate about the
  169. 5:53release of terror detainee photos do you
  170. 5:55think releasing those photos puts our
  171. 5:57troops at risk
  172. 5:59it certainly would
  173. 6:00i was in the joff when
  174. 6:03newsweek published a totally fictional
  175. 6:06article about a quran being flushed down
  176. 6:08a toilet that story is in this book
  177. 6:11and to see the riots that occurred in
  178. 6:13the aftermath of that
  179. 6:14to see what's happened in the aftermath
  180. 6:16of the photographs
  181. 6:18released from abu ghraib initially to
  182. 6:21see the kinds of hatred that that can
  183. 6:23foment in the minds of
  184. 6:25radical islamics tells you that
  185. 6:27americans would be increasingly at risk
  186. 6:31house democrats are pushing for an
  187. 6:33increase in the number of lawmakers who
  188. 6:34hear secret intelligence operations
  189. 6:36briefings what do you um what do you
  190. 6:38think about that
  191. 6:40the the problem with making it a broader
  192. 6:42circle on capitol hill
  193. 6:44is that the kinds of intelligence that
  194. 6:46we're collecting whether it's through
  195. 6:48interrogations or other means
  196. 6:51if they are revealed to the enemy they
  197. 6:53will adapt
  198. 6:55their process their procedures their
  199. 6:57tactics even their strategy to
  200. 6:59compensate for it
  201. 7:01broadening the circle of people on
  202. 7:02capitol hill isn't going to make us
  203. 7:05safer it isn't going to give more
  204. 7:07information than they were already
  205. 7:08getting
  206. 7:09what it will do is make it available to
  207. 7:11people who otherwise might not have
  208. 7:13national security of the united states
  209. 7:15at stake and see the opportunity to do
  210. 7:17political gla grandstanding just like
  211. 7:19nancy pelosi did
  212. 7:21what are your thoughts on pelosi's
  213. 7:22grandstanding and and her
  214. 7:25words for the cia
  215. 7:27well look at the the morale of the
  216. 7:29central intelligence agency just like
  217. 7:31the morale of our military when it's
  218. 7:33being criticized
  219. 7:34by the new york times or by any one of
  220. 7:36the major periodicals or by the networks
  221. 7:39and we've seen it all happen in the
  222. 7:40course of this war much of it documented
  223. 7:42in this book that adversely affects the
  224. 7:45morale of everybody involved and what
  225. 7:47this administration has got to do
  226. 7:50is understand that there are secrets
  227. 7:52that cannot be revealed nancy pelosi
  228. 7:55ought to get
  229. 7:56i i well nancy pelosi to take the
  230. 7:59opportunity to correct the record and
  231. 8:01reveal that she really was briefed and
  232. 8:03that perhaps she forgot about it i
  233. 8:05understand you are an scre instructor so
  234. 8:08you've waterboarded people and have been
  235. 8:09waterboarded yourself did you feel it
  236. 8:11was torture
  237. 8:12well every survival escape resistance
  238. 8:14invasion course student which i once was
  239. 8:18was subject to these same kinds of
  240. 8:20interrogation techniques as a means of
  241. 8:22preparing us for the kinds of things
  242. 8:24that we could face if we were captured
  243. 8:27each seer instructor is given that same
  244. 8:29kind of training now the reality is of
  245. 8:31it no one ever thought of as torture
  246. 8:34certainly it's uncomfortable but torture
  247. 8:36is the kind of thing that leaves
  248. 8:38permanent disfigurement it causes
  249. 8:40horrible pain it causes the kinds of
  250. 8:42things that that you know you look back
  251. 8:44at medieval torture chambers that's
  252. 8:47torture
  253. 8:48what john mccain and others were
  254. 8:50subjected to in the hanoi hilton and in
  255. 8:52other prisons of vietnam that was
  256. 8:55torture that was brutality that's not
  257. 8:57what americans were doing it was never
  258. 9:00torture before this administration
  259. 9:02decided it to be so do you feel that we
  260. 9:04as a nation have forgotten the lessons
  261. 9:06of september 11th
  262. 9:08oh my goodness yes i mean look what's
  263. 9:10look what's transpired we we're now
  264. 9:13looking at closing down the kinds of
  265. 9:15collection of information on foreign
  266. 9:18transactions shutting down the
  267. 9:20communications that or the interceptive
  268. 9:22communications that goes on between
  269. 9:25americans and and other places around
  270. 9:27the world
  271. 9:28when you start saying that the privacy
  272. 9:30of those international phone calls or
  273. 9:32communications on the internet
  274. 9:34through email and the like are off
  275. 9:36limits you're automatically subjecting
  276. 9:39yourself to increased vulnerability my
  277. 9:41hope is that we're not going to stop the
  278. 9:43government the
  279. 9:44national security agency and others from
  280. 9:47collecting that information because
  281. 9:49otherwise we're going to have another
  282. 9:51911 and it could be worse
  283. 9:53colonel for anyone who wants to be an
  284. 9:55american hero maybe they can join the
  285. 9:57military maybe they can't what advice
  286. 9:59would you give them
  287. 10:00well as i say a hero is not the person
  288. 10:03that catches a pass in the end zone not
  289. 10:05the person that gets eight gold medals
  290. 10:07at the olympics
  291. 10:08a hero is a person who willingly puts
  292. 10:11themself at risk for the benefit of
  293. 10:13others and so the family members that
  294. 10:15are in this book
  295. 10:17the loved ones that they leave behind
  296. 10:19they're heroes as well because they're
  297. 10:20making an enormous sacrifice to the
  298. 10:22benefit of this country
  299. 10:24and a hero is a person who is serving
  300. 10:26this country every one of those soldiers
  301. 10:29sailors airmen guardsmen and marines who
  302. 10:31are serving today are heroes because of
  303. 10:34the sacrifices that they've made for
  304. 10:35this country
  305. 10:37and they can call themselves as such
  306. 10:39they can pull this book off a shelf set
  307. 10:41in front of their grandchildren 30 years
  308. 10:43from now and say that's what i did for
  309. 10:45this country
  310. 10:47all right colonel oliver north author of
  311. 10:49american heroes in the fight against
