- 0:26i think
- 0:26a fun one today a nice little comparison
- 0:28review because there's been more of
- 0:30these kind of products popping up and i
- 0:32just want to know myself
- 0:33how they compare how they differ now if
- 0:35you're not familiar with what you're
- 0:36seeing
- 0:37here's the deal these four products are
- 0:39from four different companies and
- 0:40they're aiming to solve the problem of
- 0:42which water should i bring my coffee
- 0:43with because we know
- 0:45the water you brew with has a big impact
- 0:47and often fixing that can be
- 0:49difficult frustrating the idea here is
- 0:52that they
- 0:52sell the perfect ratio of minerals that
- 0:55you then add to distilled
- 0:57pure water and then you've got the end
- 0:59of it
- 1:00perfect water for coffee and i know i
- 1:02say perfect because there's no such
- 1:03thing but i also say perfect because
- 1:05everyone here
- 1:05kind of seems to be talking about
- 1:06perfect to some extent let's get into
- 1:08what we've got on the table
- 1:10now first up is third wave water i would
- 1:12say probably the pioneers in this space
- 1:14correct me if i'm wrong now as
- 1:15disclosure third wave of water has
- 1:17supported the world's largest coffee
- 1:19tasting twice with free product that
- 1:20we've then passed on
- 1:22it's meant that anyone taking part in a
- 1:23tasting around the world can be using
- 1:25exactly the same water and therefore
- 1:27having
- 1:27as close to the same experience as
- 1:29possible now this is their classic
- 1:30profile and this is i think shipped just
- 1:33for europe
- 1:34because the sizing is different these
- 1:36are little sachets and this goes into
- 1:37two liters it's a metric dosage
- 1:39for which i'm very grateful uh because
- 1:42in the uk and in europe
- 1:43we don't have access to gallons of water
- 1:46literally we can't buy a gallon of water
- 1:48in a shop
- 1:49very easily if at all it's all metric so
- 1:51you can buy like five liters
- 1:52or one liter but not a gallon
- 1:55so this is for two liters which i i do
- 1:57quite like now third wave water do other
- 1:59profiles too they do an
- 2:00uh espresso profile and a dark roast
- 2:02profile this is the classic
- 2:04and so that's what we're going to be
- 2:05testing today next up is a different
- 2:08approach this is gc water uh this is
- 2:09their perfect
- 2:10cup formula wait did the third wave say
- 2:12perfect anywhere no use of the word
- 2:13perfect we'll decide if that's a bonus
- 2:15or not later
- 2:16now this is a different approach which
- 2:17is interesting this is not a powder
- 2:19like the third reporter this is two
- 2:22little droppers of liquid so the idea
- 2:25here is you put one milliliter of each
- 2:27one and
- 2:27the metric usage is noted there uh of a
- 2:31and b into a gallon of water and then
- 2:32you've got a perfect combination of
- 2:34minerals i will say from a usability
- 2:36perspective
- 2:37the little droppers on here have been a
- 2:39bit annoying this was quite easy you
- 2:40just tear open pour the sachet in
- 2:42here you can see on here there's little
- 2:44markings for
- 2:45sort of how much liquid you should be
- 2:47sort of using and you can see there's a
- 2:49one milliliter line there the
- 2:50frustrating thing is you can't squeeze
- 2:52enough air out of the dropper if i
- 2:54squeeze everything out
- 2:56really to get more than 0.75 so that's
- 2:58just that's just not a very well chosen
- 3:00dropper from my perspective
- 3:01i did a 0.75 and then 0.25 which was
- 3:04just awkward
- 3:05just let me get a milliliter and then
- 3:06here we've got coffee brewing water from
- 3:08aqua code no use of the word perfect
- 3:10which is good
- 3:11as far as i can tell so these work in
- 3:12metric which i do appreciate but they're
- 3:14for seven
- 3:15liters right it's a six male sachet for
- 3:18seven liters of water and i don't know
- 3:20why it's seven liters that's such an odd
- 3:23size i can buy five
- 3:24i can buy one but why why seven so
- 3:27mixing this was a little bit difficult
- 3:28in the end
- 3:29i weighed the contents of a sachet and
- 3:32then very carefully took half of it out
- 3:33and put into three and a half liters of
- 3:35water
- 3:37just because that's much more practical
- 3:38to me than trying to do seven when i
- 3:39don't have a seven liter container
- 3:41and i've never seen a seven liter
- 3:42container anyway and then on the end
- 3:44here
- 3:45perfect coffee water now there's not a
- 3:46lot of innovation around the names here
- 3:48we've got
- 3:49coffee brewing water we've got perfect
- 3:51coffee water we've got perfect cup
- 3:54water and then third wave water so
- 3:56points are supposed to third wave for
- 3:57standing out at that front these are
- 3:59sachets again and each sachet here does
- 4:02one gallon of water
- 4:03frustratingly but i can work with a
- 4:05gallon they do a version that does
- 4:06five gallons if you've got one of those
- 4:08giant sort of things i guess you can buy
- 4:10five gallon
- 4:11tanks in the us maybe i guess but uh one
- 4:14gallon is what we used here
- 4:15so that was kind of nice these are
- 4:17options but how are they different
- 4:18because
- 4:19none of them really give up their secret
- 4:21sauce right like none of them will tell
- 4:22you what their composition is
- 4:23perhaps because making your own water is
- 4:26quite easy if you're willing to source
- 4:28deionized water and do all that then
- 4:30actually to do a home brewed version
- 4:32is relatively easy but if you don't want
- 4:34to do that these are the options that
- 4:35are out there so instead of doing
- 4:36testing all that kind of stuff what i
- 4:38thought would be more interesting
- 4:39is to do a taster comparison so here's
- 4:41how it's gonna work i've got
- 4:42three different roasts here i've got a
- 4:44light roast a medium roast and a dark
- 4:46roast what we did here is we used a zero
- 4:48water filter right which actually strips
- 4:50everything out of your water back to
- 4:51pretty much zero i just find that easier
- 4:54than going and buying a ton of deionized
- 4:55water and a
- 4:56cheaper too so brand new filter in there
- 4:59stripped back to zero and all of these
- 5:00were then
- 5:01made up these have since been randomized
- 5:03or
- 5:04turned blind for me so they've gone into
- 5:05like an abcd
- 5:07situation so i don't know which of the
- 5:08waters is which now what'll happen is
- 5:10that for
- 5:11each of the roasts we're gonna brew with
- 5:13each of the waters
- 5:14so there's gonna be three groups of
- 5:16tasting a light a medium and a dark
- 5:18and then randomized within those will be
- 5:20all of these waters
- 5:21and we'll see how each of them performs
- 5:23at different roast levels now we're
- 5:24going to be using the cupping method a
- 5:25straight infusion brew i figured that's
- 5:27the easiest way to remove as many
- 5:28variables as possible and just taste the
- 5:30water coffee
- 5:32interaction so as you can see we're kind
- 5:34of brewing in batches here so when it is
- 5:35time for tasting c
- 5:36d will be marginally hotter there's
- 5:38about four minutes gap between their
- 5:39brewing times
- 5:40which as they cool down won't really
- 5:42matter that much but i don't know what
- 5:43you see which is d
- 5:44i don't know which is a which is b in
- 5:46those kind of group tastings so i will
- 5:47be as blind as blind can be
- 5:50and what i'm looking for are kind of
- 5:52trends across the different roast levels
- 5:54right if the same
- 5:55water performs in a very similar way it
- 5:58affects acidity in a very similar way or
- 6:00it affects
- 6:00sort of a bitterness a very similar way
- 6:03that's sort of notable
- 6:04and what i hope to do with this tasting
- 6:07is give you advice about with the
- 6:08preference that you have for roast or
- 6:10coffee flavor
- 6:11which water might be the water for you
- 6:13if you're looking for one of these as a
- 6:15solution to coffee bring water at home
- 6:17time i think pretty much to break and
- 6:19clean these ones
- 6:20and then we'll do a little
- 6:21redistribution and make life as
- 6:23difficult as possible for me
- 6:25so i don't know what's going on so i'm
- 6:26just going to taste my way through this
- 6:27i'm going to start with the light roast
- 6:29grouping first
- 6:30medium dark there'll be a slurp but
- 6:33let's not
- 6:34just have a lot of slurps that might get
- 6:35a little bit too much so uh
- 6:38here's your first one oh we go first
- 6:41impression is tasting this group what
- 6:42what's
- 6:43defining the differences is acidity
- 6:45that's kind of interesting the
- 6:46differences don't feel quite as profound
- 6:48in the medium roast group so i'm kind of
- 6:50interested to see how the dark roast
- 6:52group will be
- 6:53i can't tell the difference between
- 6:55these ones
- 6:56it's really hard down this end to pick
- 6:58them apart i think it's time for some
- 6:59results
- 7:00i will talk through my preferences i'm
- 7:02not going to say these ones are best
- 7:04it'll be interesting to see how
- 7:05different ones perform at different
- 7:06stages
- 7:07so i've pushed forward the furthest the
- 7:09one i liked the most so in this case
- 7:10this is the one i liked the best
- 7:12then this one and then these two sort of
- 7:14equal third place and same again here i
- 7:16like this one best
- 7:17then this one and these two equal third
- 7:19place it's interesting that the pattern
- 7:20matches
- 7:21so it's highly unlikely that this is the
- 7:23same winner across both
- 7:24on the dark roasts it was really really
- 7:27hard to pick them apart
- 7:28and this one was slightly less bitter
- 7:31very slightly sweeter but
- 7:33really astonishing to me actually how
- 7:36similar they were
- 7:37in the cup or potentially how broken my
- 7:39palate was at this point
- 7:40another option and it's really hard i
- 7:42think in a tasting to jump between
- 7:44roasts because a big part of your
- 7:45tasting experience is
- 7:46contrast so when you go from say medium
- 7:49rise to a dark that first dark
- 7:51taste that you get seems dark than it is
- 7:53right it seems more intensely bitter
- 7:55much harsher
- 7:56compared to this but as you compare to
- 7:58sort of more similar bowls
- 8:00you know the tasting gets closer in a
- 8:02funny way let me just uh
- 8:04lock in my my preference this bowl here
- 8:06it just had a bit more balance of acid
- 8:08and sweet
- 8:09and then it became increasingly sort of
- 8:11acid dominant so here
- 8:13a little zingier zippier they both have
- 8:15really nice fruit from the coffee
- 8:16present
- 8:16then these two again just a bit zippier
- 8:18still just a good amount of zing if you
- 8:20like
- 8:20a fresh crisp acidity in your coffees
- 8:22then i think you'd really like this
- 8:24i like more of a sweet acid balance and
- 8:26so this one
- 8:27stood out for me as being just very
- 8:29enjoyable similarly here
- 8:31it's a little jump up in acid from this
- 8:32to this this is again a bit more sweeter
- 8:34a bit more balanced for this roast level
- 8:36and then these two
- 8:37this one's a little flatter generally
- 8:39and this one
- 8:40is kind of just a bit tangier i'm not
- 8:42sorry i would prefer one over the other
- 8:43they are
- 8:44quite different though which is
- 8:45interesting and then this one
- 8:47was just not quite as bad as the others
- 8:49now before we do the reveal
- 8:51there's a little something first which
- 8:52is a short ad for this video sponsor and
- 8:54because there's a sponsor for this video
- 8:55it means we're gonna give away some
- 8:56coffee so
- 8:57if you can't afford coffee right now and
- 8:59that would make you a day there's a link
- 9:01down below if i can send you coffee
- 9:02wherever you are in the world i
- 9:04will if you win uh 25 of you i'll pick
- 9:06at random
- 9:07and send you coffee and that's possible
- 9:09because this video has a sponsor

- 9:45use code james hoffman for 10 off any
- 9:48website or domain
- 9:49thank you to squarespace for sponsoring
- 9:50this video time for the reveal and it's
- 9:52gonna be like a weird double reveal
- 9:54because i don't know what the letters
- 9:56are yet
- 9:57so we'll kind of see if any one letter
- 9:59does better and then we'll find out what
- 10:00that letter is so
- 10:02from the light roast letter c
- 10:05did the best for me followed by letter b
- 10:09now in this one to win for b so b is
- 10:12doing
- 10:13quite well a first and a second and this
- 10:15one oh this one's a
- 10:17interesting this was c now that's
- 10:20interesting
- 10:20now this felt a little flat in a medium
- 10:23roast but it felt a bit more balanced
- 10:24than a light roast i
- 10:25really can't wait to see what these are
- 10:27and this one that fell a bit tangier was
- 10:28d now on this side
- 10:32d takes a win this is really interesting
- 10:35okay it's kind of good news actually so
- 10:37d for me stood out as being a bit more
- 10:39kind of interesting balanced less bitter
- 10:41so now i guess we should find out
- 10:44what's what now i gather that they are
- 10:47written on the bottom
- 10:48of the packets so let's find out perfect
- 10:50coffee water
- 10:51first one i picked up was b now i think
- 10:54b had the win over here right so
- 10:56yes so i would say this tasted really
- 10:58good with kind of a medium
- 11:00roast very nice c takes a win
- 11:03over here c
- 11:06so c this did really well on the sort of
- 11:08uh light roast
- 11:10end of things third wave of water where
- 11:12a
- 11:13you know you came second over here
- 11:16so again very nice in the sort of
- 11:20um medium roast category which means
- 11:23that this is d
- 11:24it is d which is interesting that it did
- 11:26well in in that sort of darker roast
- 11:28section
- 11:29definitely an interesting selection this
- 11:32for
- 11:32me would be a contender uh you know what
- 11:34i mean like i like that it did quite
- 11:36well at light and kind of more medium
- 11:37style roasts
- 11:39uh though i have to say i did like this
- 11:41that was a really interesting test i
- 11:42always feel when we talk about water
- 11:44that we're just kind of dipping a toe
- 11:45into this enormous subject
- 11:47but definitely interesting definitely
- 11:49interesting and if you use one of these
- 11:52i want to hear from you down in the
- 11:53comments below why did you pick it how
- 11:54has your experience been
- 11:56have you enjoyed using it is it a pain
- 11:58is it an easy part of your routine
- 12:00have you tried a few different options
- 12:02what do you like has it has it fit
- 12:04your coffee the way that i have
- 12:06described here
- 12:08let me know down in the comments below
- 12:10but for now i'll say thank you so much
- 12:11for watching
- 12:12and i hope you have a great day
