  1. 0:00Feminists told men for years that sex is
  2. 0:02just consent, nothing more. Then
  3. 0:04Hollywood blew up and suddenly
  4. 0:06everyone's shocked. Ben Shapiro just
  5. 0:09walked into this debate and exposed the
  6. 0:10contradiction in about 30 seconds. If

  10. 0:20>> Do you think that women who voted for
  11. 0:22Hillary, women who have strongly
  12. 0:23supported the feminist movement and
  13. 0:25supported the left are feeling
  14. 0:26disenfranchised given the current
  15. 0:28climate of sexual brutality and
  16. 0:29oppression brought to light in Hollywood
  17. 0:31recently?
  18. 0:32>> Um so the the left So the question of
  19. 0:35what the left is doing about this, do
  20. 0:36they feel disenfranchised? Uh no, I
  21. 0:38think they're just going to blame the
  22. 0:39same people they always blame because
  23. 0:40we're all in our own little bubbles.
  24. 0:42Should they feel disenfranchised? 100%
  25. 0:45because in a society that treats sex as
  26. 0:47transactional
  27. 0:48in a society that basically reduces sex
  28. 0:51to any sort just a physical transaction
  29. 0:54that is based solely on consent, it
  30. 0:55makes it very difficult to explain why
  31. 0:57it is that the casting couch in
  32. 0:58Hollywood is bad per se.
  33. 1:00Right, there's actually like feminist
  34. 1:01theory says that it's bad because of
  35. 1:03power imbalances. But the sort of
  36. 1:04libertarian culture of the left suggests
  37. 1:07that power imbalance doesn't have
  38. 1:08anything to do with it. If I feel like
  39. 1:09trading my body for a part in a movie,
  40. 1:11well, that's my business. And if you say
  41. 1:13differently, then you're slut-shaming
  42. 1:14me. Right, so that's Well, you can't
  43. 1:16really have it both ways. Either it's
  44. 1:18bad or it's not bad. And if we are going
  45. 1:20to fight sexual harassment and sexual
  46. 1:22assault, it seems to me that we have to
  47. 1:23do a couple of things. One, we have to
  48. 1:25reinvest sex with value beyond just a
  49. 1:27physical transaction. It's not just two
  50. 1:29people who are getting each other's
  51. 1:30rocks off. It actually means something
  52. 1:32beyond that. There's a relationship
  53. 1:33that's attached to it.
  54. 1:35And beyond that, I think that we need to
  55. 1:37reinculcate in men themselves not just
  56. 1:40the teach men not to rape routine. Like
  57. 1:42again, it's such a weird concept. Like
  58. 1:43when I was 11, my dad didn't sit me down
  59. 1:45and say, "Son, don't rape people."
  60. 1:50Like if you have to teach your child
  61. 1:51that, my guess is that you got a bigger
  62. 1:52problem than that on your hands.
  63. 1:54Um
  64. 1:56What my dad taught me was to be a
  65. 1:57gentleman and to treat women with
  66. 1:59respect. And that has to do with being a
  67. 2:01gentleman and recognizing differences in
  68. 2:02sex roles. Because one of the things
  69. 2:04that's happened is the traditional
  70. 2:05masculinity, the idea that it is a man's
  71. 2:07job to protect women. This is one of our
  72. 2:09jobs as human beings, as men, to protect
  73. 2:11women. The feminist movement doesn't
  74. 2:12like that. Well, then you can't blame us
  75. 2:14for not protecting women if you don't
  76. 2:16want us to protect women.
  77. 2:17Like I want to protect women. I think
  78. 2:19men should protect women. I think one of
  79. 2:20the reasons God put man on earth is to
  80. 2:22protect women.
  81. 2:23Okay, well, then it is incumbent on me
  82. 2:25to protect women. But if you're telling
  83. 2:26me that I can't even open a door for a
  84. 2:28woman because this is somehow an offense
  85. 2:29to her honor. And then if I say that
  86. 2:31it's man's job to protect women, that
  87. 2:33this is somehow reinforcing gender
  88. 2:35stereotypes, then don't come whining to
  89. 2:36me when bad stuff happens.
  90. 2:38Because the the answer to bad behavior
  91. 2:39is good behavior. The answer to vice is
  92. 2:42virtue. The answer to vice isn't just
  93. 2:44yelling and and hashtagging crap.
  94. 2:46Anybody who suggests to you that there
  95. 2:48is such a thing, for example, as a
  96. 2:49pregnant male is not a doctor, they're
  97. 2:51an activist.
  98. 2:52>> Do you believe you're right about trans
  99. 2:53people given the American Psychological
  100. 2:55Association, American Medical
  101. 2:56Association, American Psychoanalytic
  102. 2:58Association, I can go on for about five
  103. 3:00more associations
  104. 3:02that are very prominent and govern the
  105. 3:05the existing like health
  106. 3:07health government or
  107. 3:09health industries within
  108. 3:12like the major Western countries. Um
  109. 3:16And all of these associations have
  110. 3:17multiple thousands of doctors,
  111. 3:19sociologists, psychologists and with
  112. 3:21PhDs in their respective fields backing
  113. 3:23the idea that sex and gender are
  114. 3:25different, effectively gaining the
  115. 3:27medical consensus for sex and gender
  116. 3:29being two different concepts, yet you
  117. 3:31have a
  118. 3:31different opinion.
  119. 3:33>> Okay, so sex and gender are two
  120. 3:35different concepts, but gender is tied
  121. 3:37to biology. So, one of the big problems
  122. 3:39that that you see in sort of the the
  123. 3:41argument in favor of trans rights is
  124. 3:42this notion that gender and sex are
  125. 3:44completely separable. They're not
  126. 3:45completely separable. If they are
  127. 3:46completely separable, then this means
  128. 3:48that identifying people by their
  129. 3:49subjective gender really has no
  130. 3:51relevance as to whether they are male or
  131. 3:53female. Male and female are biological
  132. 3:55terms. So, using terminology like male
  133. 3:57and female to describe a self-describe a
  134. 3:59self-perception of of maleness or
  135. 4:02femaleness is a sort of bizarre way of
  136. 4:04arguing whether a thing is a man or
  137. 4:06woman. So, here is my question. It's an
  138. 4:07argument that my friend Matt Walsh likes
  139. 4:09to make. What is a woman? Define what a
  140. 4:11woman is without reference to the word
  141. 4:12woman, please.
  142. 4:14>> Um so, this is actually a logical
  143. 4:16fallacy called a red herring. You're
  144. 4:18asking me a question indifferent or um
  145. 4:21in order to actually challenge my
  146. 4:23question without actually answering my
  147. 4:25>> it really is not. I'm saying that
  148. 4:26biology I'm agreeing with you that the
  149. 4:29notion of gender, which is
  150. 4:30effeminateness or masculinity, can be
  151. 4:33different from biology in the sense that
  152. 4:35biology is just pure male or pure
  153. 4:37female. But to suggest that there is
  154. 4:38such a thing as an effeminate male is
  155. 4:39not to suggest that an effeminate male
  156. 4:41is now a woman.
  157. 4:42Transgenderism makes the argument that
  158. 4:44if you believe that you are a woman, you
  159. 4:46are therefore a woman. Or if you believe
  160. 4:47that you are a man, you are therefore a
  161. 4:49man.
  162. 4:50I disagree with this. There are
  163. 4:51objective measures as to whether you're
  164. 4:52a man or a woman. There are objective
  165. 4:53measures as to whether you're a male or
  166. 4:54female. You're a There There certainly
  167. 4:56is a spectrum when when with regard to
  168. 4:58effeminateness versus masculinity.
  169. 5:00That's certainly true, but that does not
  170. 5:01change the underlying sexual dichotomy
  171. 5:03that is the basis for all human
  172. 5:04reproduction.
  173. 5:06Yeah, you can
  174. 5:07>> Um right. So, this dichotomy is a false
  175. 5:09dichotomy that isn't supported by any of
  176. 5:11the medical associations that I just
  177. 5:13named off. None of the medical
  178. 5:14associations that I just named off would
  179. 5:16actually support the uh idea that um
  180. 5:20gender is biological. This is something
  181. 5:22that's completely untrue within every
  182. 5:23single like medical consensus.
  183. 5:25>> Uh well then, I will just say that
  184. 5:27anyone who suggests that gender has no
  185. 5:28reference whatsoever to biology, it's
  186. 5:30not connected in any way to biology, is
  187. 5:32just full of Because if you if if
  188. 5:33the and and the reason I
  189. 5:36And
  190. 5:37>> [applause]
  191. 5:38>> And the re And the reason that I say
  192. 5:40>> Then you Then you classi- Then you
  193. 5:42actually just disagree with medical
  194. 5:44consensus within the Western world.
  195. 5:45>> I disagree with the false medical
  196. 5:47consensus driven by politically driven
  197. 5:49quote unquote doctors. If any doctor
  198. 5:51denies to me that there is a dichotomy
  199. 5:53between male and female, a sexual
  200. 5:55dichotomy between male and female, they
  201. 5:56are ignorant and they are letting their
  202. 5:58politics get in the way of their
  203. 5:59science. Anybody who suggests to you
  204. 6:01that there is such a thing for example
  205. 6:02as a pregnant male is not a doctor, they
  206. 6:04are an activist.
  207. 6:07>> [applause]
  208. 6:13>> I'm very glad that none of these
  209. 6:15opinions are actually accepted in
  210. 6:17academia and haven't been for over 70
  211. 6:19years since this year on Twitter.
  212. 6:20>> okay. So, the notion that they haven't
  213. 6:21been accepted for over 70 years is a
  214. 6:23bizarre one considering they were
  215. 6:24accepted until about 5 minutes ago. And
  216. 6:26the basic idea that male and female do
  217. 6:28not exist runs counter to all mammalian
  218. 6:30biology, all of it, not just human. Are
  219. 6:32we to suggest that gender and and sex
  220. 6:34are different in walruses? How does this
  221. 6:36work exactly? Like
  222. 6:38are they different in bears? Anytime you
  223. 6:40have a anytime you have all mammalian
  224. 6:42reproduction is rooted in the idea that
  225. 6:44there's a sexual dichotomy between male
  226. 6:45and female. To obscure that with all
  227. 6:47sorts of semantic word games about how
  228. 6:49you feel subjectively has no bearing on
  229. 6:51whether male and female are categories
  230. 6:53that exist. And if you're trying to
  231. 6:54define male and female with reference to
  232. 6:56any subjective category that cannot be
  233. 6:58identified by any metric whatsoever
  234. 7:00other than how you feel today, I
  235. 7:02challenge whether that is scientific or
  236. 7:03whether that is merely a self-perception
  237. 7:05that is being guided by a political
  238. 7:07agenda.
  239. 7:07>> What's going on everybody? Today we're
  240. 7:09reacting to a clip that's lighting up
  241. 7:11the internet and it starts with a loaded
  242. 7:14question. Should women who backed
  243. 7:16Hillary and fought for the feminist
  244. 7:17movement feel let down right now?
  245. 7:20Ben's first answer is no. They'll blame
  246. 7:23the same people they always blame
  247. 7:25because everyone lives in their own
  248. 7:27little bubble. Fair enough. But should
  249. 7:29they feel let down 100%? Here's why. If
  250. 7:33your culture says sex is a transaction,
  251. 7:36if it's just two people in a signed
  252. 7:37permission slip, then you've got a
  253. 7:39problem. You can't explain why the
  254. 7:41casting couch is wrong. Feminist theory
  255. 7:44says it's wrong because of the power
  256. 7:45imbalance.
  257. 7:46Great, but the libertarian wing of the
  258. 7:49left says power has nothing to do with
  259. 7:51it. If I want to trade my body for a
  260. 7:53movie role, that's my business and if
  261. 7:55you disagree, you're slut-shaming me.
  262. 7:58So, which is it? You can't have both.
  263. 8:01Either it's wrong or it isn't.
  264. 8:04Ben says if we're serious about fighting
  265. 8:06harassment and assault, we have to do
  266. 8:08two things. First, put value back into
  267. 8:11sex. It's not just two people getting
  268. 8:13each other's rocks off. It means
  269. 8:15something. There's a relationship
  270. 8:17attached to it. Second, we have to build
  271. 8:19character in men. Not through the teach
  272. 8:22men not to rape routine. Think about how
  273. 8:24strange that is. When Ben was 11, his
  274. 8:27dad didn't sit him down and say, "Son,
  275. 8:30don't rape people." If you have to teach
  276. 8:32your kid that, you've got a much bigger
  277. 8:34problem. His dad taught him to be a
  278. 8:36gentleman, to treat women with respect.
  279. 8:39To understand that men and women have
  280. 8:41different roles and here's where he
  281. 8:43lands the punch. Traditional masculinity
  282. 8:46says it's a man's job to protect women.
  283. 8:48The feminist movement hated that. So, he
  284. 8:50says, "Fine, you can't blame men for
  285. 8:52failing to protect women when you spent
  286. 8:54years telling us we're not allowed to."
  287. 8:56Open a door and it's an insult to her
  288. 8:58honor. Say men should protect women and
  289. 9:01you're reinforcing stereotypes. Then
  290. 9:03don't come complaining when things go
  291. 9:04wrong.
  292. 9:06The answer to bad behavior is good
  293. 9:07behavior. The answer to vice is virtue.
  294. 9:10It is not hashtags and yelling.
  295. 9:13Now the clip shifts gears and it gets
  296. 9:15even more intense.
  297. 9:17Ben gets hit with the big one. Why do
  298. 9:19you disagree with the major medical
  299. 9:21associations when it comes to gender?
  300. 9:24Watch how he handles it. He doesn't deny
  301. 9:27that sex and gender are different ideas.
  302. 9:30He says a man can be effeminate and
  303. 9:31still be a man. Masculinity and
  304. 9:34femininity are a spectrum, but that
  305. 9:36doesn't touch the male-female divide
  306. 9:38that all human reproduction is built on.
  307. 9:41His opponent keeps repeating that the
  308. 9:43associations say otherwise. Credentials,
  309. 9:45credentials, credentials.
  310. 9:47Ben says that's a consensus driven by
  311. 9:50politics and that any doctor who denies
  312. 9:52the male-female divide is letting
  313. 9:54politics override science.
  314. 9:57Then he asks the question that stops the
  315. 9:59room cold. Are sex and gender different
  316. 10:01in walruses? In bears? Every mammal on
  317. 10:05Earth reproduces through male and
  318. 10:06female. You can bury that under semantic
  319. 10:09games, but it doesn't make it disappear.
  320. 10:12And he closes with a challenge. If you
  321. 10:14define male and female by a feeling you
  322. 10:16can't measure, a feeling that could
  323. 10:18change by tomorrow, is that science? Or
  324. 10:21is it self-perception steered by a
  325. 10:22political agenda?
  326. 10:24Here's what I noticed. Ben answers every
  327. 10:27question head-on. The other side keeps
  328. 10:29retreating to authority and avoiding the
  329. 10:32premise. And in a debate, that tells you
  330. 10:34plenty. So, where do you stand? Did Ben
  331. 10:38nail it? Or did he miss the mark? Drop
