- 0:38anytime I release a video on my channel
- 0:40okay today's video is all about the
- 0:42fundamentals between the quarterback and
- 0:43running back at the mesh point with
- 0:45inside zone Reed I'm gonna show you what
- 0:47it looks like on paper and then also tie
- 0:49that with a few game Clips so you can
- 0:51get an idea of how you can coach it up
- 0:53for your players before we get to the
- 0:55clip I'll just quickly go over the pre
- 0:57snap rules for the running back and the
- 0:59quarterback and where their alignment is
- 1:01so starting with a quarterback no matter
- 1:03what play it is I always have the
- 1:05quarterbacks toes at five yards pass
- 1:07play run play doesn't matter what run
- 1:09play it is we're always at five yards I
- 1:11never want to adjust the depth of the
- 1:13quarterback so his toes are at five and
- 1:15then we move the running back based on
- 1:16what play it is and so if we're going
- 1:18zone read to the left here our depth of
- 1:21the run for the running backs are
- 1:22anywhere between six to eight yards now
- 1:25I'm for the slower backs you will want
- 1:29to put them a little bit closer to the
- 1:30quarterback so so for guys that take a
- 1:32little bit longer to get to top speed
- 1:34you want them probably closer to six
- 1:36yards whereas faster backs that can get
- 1:38to top speed very quickly you can move
- 1:41those guys back and they can be probably
- 1:43the guys that are at eight yards so
- 1:44anywhere between six to eight yards is
- 1:46the depth of the running back and then
- 1:48their alignment is that they are going
- 1:50to straddle the outside leg of the
- 1:53backside guard so it would be this right
- 1:55guard right here where our running back
- 1:56is gonna be straddling his outside leg
- 1:59and so that really is basically how we
- 2:01set up were offset and we're setting up
- 2:04this way if we're if we were to be
- 2:06running zone read to the left and now
- 2:08obviously against this even front we're
- 2:10gonna be reading the number three
- 2:12defender to the back side
- 2:13if you're unsure of the number system
- 2:14then I suggest watching that video that
- 2:16I made previously about blocking inside
- 2:18zone read and versus an even front but
- 2:20in this situation here with their six
- 2:22guys in the box we're gonna be reading
- 2:24this defensive end now just real quick
- 2:26before we get to the film if you don't
- 2:28know the read for the quarterback is
- 2:31he's gonna read this defensive end so if
- 2:33this defensive end gets across the line
- 2:35of scrimmage he sits here on the L OS
- 2:37and stays home then our quarterback is
- 2:39gonna ride and decide at the mesh point
- 2:41and give the ball to the running back
- 2:42for inside zone read to the left now if
- 2:44the defensive end comes across the line
- 2:46of scrimmage and he squeezes down the
- 2:48line of scrimmage here or he gets across
- 2:50and he chases the tail of the running
- 2:52back and the quarterback is gonna rip
- 2:53the ball out and then he's gonna keep it
- 2:55for himself on zone read okay so there's
- 2:58the the alignment for the quarterback
- 2:59and running back and then that's the
- 3:02read for the quarterback when we're
- 3:03going zone read to the left here so now
- 3:05let's get into some of the fundamentals
- 3:07and what the footwork looks like for
- 3:09both the quarterback and running back
- 3:10with zone read in this example we're
- 3:12going inside zone read to the left so
- 3:14you can see our quarterbacks toes are at
- 3:16five yards our running back is about six
- 3:18and a half yards and he's lined up
- 3:20straddling the outside leg of the the
- 3:22right guard here and then our
- 3:24quarterback is gonna be reading number
- 3:2517 here this stand-up the defensive end
- 3:28because we've identified him as the
- 3:30third defender to the backside now
- 3:33looking at the footwork and fundamentals
- 3:35for the quarterback his first step when
- 3:37he gets the ball from the center is that
- 3:38he's gonna step in the bucket with his
- 3:41right foot and I usually communicate
- 3:43that with them by telling him to step in
- 3:45the bucket with the near foot to the
- 3:47back so if we're going zone read to the
- 3:49left and that means they're stepping in
- 3:50the bucket with their right foot and
- 3:52then from there I want to get their toes
- 3:54in the ground and their toes need to be
- 3:56parallel to each other and we're
- 3:58squaring up the defensive end from the
- 4:00ground up so I tell my quarterbacks it's
- 4:03as if you were playing basketball and
- 4:05you were D in them up in basketball
- 4:07that's kind of the position that I want
- 4:08them to be in and really what I'm trying
- 4:10to get accomplished is that I want my
- 4:11quarterbacks to set the path for the
- 4:14running back so that the back can run
- 4:16down the toes of the quarterback to his
- 4:18aiming point and so you can see when our
- 4:22quarterback gets the the snap from the
- 4:23center it balls a little bit to the left
- 4:25but it's not too bad but our court
- 4:27takes kind of this false step and steps
- 4:28out with his left foot now that's not
- 4:30great because what happens is then you
- 4:33get some disconnect at the meshed
- 4:34quarterbacks working away from the mesh
- 4:36point and it's just a little bit harder
- 4:37throws throws everything off from there
- 4:39so we don't want to lose too much ground
- 4:42we don't want to step too far in the
- 4:44bucket and our quarterback does a pretty
- 4:46decent job of getting back in position
- 4:48to get to the mesh point I want my
- 4:50quarterback at that point to put the
- 4:52ball on the backside leg so if we're
- 4:54going zone read to the left I want him
- 4:56to put the ball on his right leg I don't
- 4:58want him to keep it in the center of his
- 4:59body because I want that ball in the
- 5:01belly of the back as early as possible
- 5:03that way it gives the quarterback enough
- 5:06time to be able to read that defensive
- 5:08end and make a good decision and so when
- 5:11the balls on his right leg and they are
- 5:13at the mesh point together that's where
- 5:16I talked to the quarterbacks about ride
- 5:18and decide so that window of writing the
- 5:21mesh point before making a decision is
- 5:23the back leg to the front leg so for
- 5:26this example it would be from the right
- 5:27leg to the left leg by the time the ball
- 5:30gets to hit the quarterbacks the left
- 5:32leg a decision has to be made he's
- 5:34either got to give the ball to the
- 5:35running back or he's got to rip it out
- 5:37of the belly of the back and keep it for
- 5:39himself if he continues to ride too far
- 5:42and for too long so the balls past his
- 5:45front leg now then usually bad things
- 5:47happened because the running back thinks
- 5:48he's getting the football and if the
- 5:50quarterback makes a late decision to
- 5:52keep it for himself and tries to rip it
- 5:54out it could go off the hip of the back
- 5:56and usually just bad things happen
- 5:58that's what most the time when the ball
- 5:59ends up on the turf so that window of
- 6:02riding and deciding is from the back leg
- 6:04to the front leg and so you'll see in
- 6:06this example that our quarterback does a
- 6:08pretty good job of putting that ball in
- 6:09the back leg he gets to the mesh point
- 6:11meets the running back and he's riding
- 6:13in deciding with his eyes on 17 here now
- 6:17the one thing that I don't like very
- 6:19much about this clip is that the
- 6:20quarterback is just a little off-balance
- 6:22you can see how much he's playing in his
- 6:24toes he's really leaning forward and
- 6:27he's not really playing with his cleats
- 6:29in the ground I don't like that because
- 6:30really what you're seeing here is that
- 6:32he's cutting the path of the running
- 6:33back off he's almost running into his
- 6:35own player here and it's making it hard
- 6:37for that running back to hit his aiming
- 6:39point so
- 6:41he's got to do a better job of keeping
- 6:42his cleats in the ground not playing on
- 6:44his toes not leaning forward and
- 6:46disrupting the mesh point he does make a
- 6:49good decision though because that
- 6:50defensive end stays home he plays wide
- 6:52so that's a give for our quarterback and
- 6:55then what I really like from here is
- 6:56that the quarterback completes the play
- 6:59or finishes his job by sprinting out of
- 7:01the mesh even though he doesn't have the
- 7:03football and sprinting past the line of
- 7:06scrimmage
- 7:06I want my quarterbacks to sprint past
- 7:09the line of scrimmage five yards past
- 7:11the line of scrimmage because I'm gonna
- 7:12hold off as many backside players as I
- 7:15can whether that's a defender whether
- 7:17that's the backside linebacker or even
- 7:19the safety that's over the top and so if
- 7:22I can sell this and show that I may have
- 7:24the football by sprinting out then
- 7:26you'll see that you will hold off some
- 7:29of these players and take them away from
- 7:31the football and obviously that's a good
- 7:33thing so make sure that your
- 7:35quarterbacks if it's a give for them
- 7:36don't let them off easy by watching them
- 7:38jog out of the mesh point and not hustle
- 7:41downfield make it a drill where they
- 7:43give the ball to the running back and
- 7:45they sprint past the line of scrimmage
- 7:46510 yards down the field as if they were
- 7:50to have the football get it ingrained in
- 7:51their head that that is a part of the
- 7:53play their jobs not done once they give
- 7:56the ball up to the running back now as
- 7:57far as the fundamentals for the running
- 8:00back goes so he's outside leg in the
- 8:03guard his first step is gonna be with
- 8:05his play side foot so his left foot here
- 8:06and this is what I call the J step and I
- 8:08stole this from Chip Kelly and so he's
- 8:10gonna take a J step and so really he's
- 8:13gonna step out a 45 degree angle with
- 8:15his play side foot so you'll see that
- 8:16there that's his first step notice that
- 8:19he's keeping his hips in his shoulders
- 8:20square this is really important because
- 8:22there's three options for the running
- 8:23back to consider once he gets the
- 8:25football but he's gonna step with his
- 8:27left foot and then he's gonna replace
- 8:29that with his backside foot and so you
- 8:31can see that there so really it's step
- 8:33replace or J step so with zone read you
- 8:36can kind of see how it forms a back
- 8:38backwards J if it were to be zone read
- 8:40to the right then it would form just a
- 8:42regular J here so we want him step in
- 8:46with his play side foot and then we want
- 8:47him replacing and we want him to keep
- 8:49his shoulders and hips parallel to the
- 8:53line of scrimmage as long as he can
- 8:54so he does a really good job of doing
- 8:57this here and the biggest mistake that I
- 8:58see runningbacks make at this point when
- 9:01they're in the mesh point running zone
- 9:02Reed is that their shoulders are now in
- 9:05this direction here and their eyes are
- 9:07this way this is a huge mistake because
- 9:11one of the great things about zone Reed
- 9:13is the cut back lanes but if your
- 9:15shoulders are not parallel to the line
- 9:16of scrimmage and they're at this angle
- 9:19here then you're really cutting your
- 9:20vision off to be able to see the
- 9:22backside open up and so that's why I
- 9:25always talk to our running backs about
- 9:27making sure that their shoulders stay
- 9:29parallel to the line of scrimmage and
- 9:31that they can see there are three
- 9:33options of either bouncing it outside to
- 9:35the play side banging it in one of the a
- 9:38gaps or being able to cut it back and
- 9:40slip out the back side so you can see
- 9:42the running back does a great job of
- 9:44that and then from here it once the
- 9:47running back gets the football we want
- 9:49him to press the opposite or the play
- 9:51side a gap as long as possible and right
- 9:53away this was an obvious decision for
- 9:56the running back anyone could run
- 9:57through that hole right there I don't
- 9:58know what the defense was doing and so
- 10:00our running back bangs it through the
- 10:01hole and gets a pretty good gain out of
- 10:04that okay I want to show you this clip
- 10:06because there's a lot of good things
- 10:07that are happening here between the
- 10:08quarterback and the running back their
- 10:09fundamentals and because of that it
- 10:11leads to a really positive play for big
- 10:14yards and so same thing zone Reed to the
- 10:17left we're reading the third defender to
- 10:19the backside so that's that defensive
- 10:20end there and different quarterback and
- 10:23different running back but you'll also
- 10:24notice that they have very similar
- 10:26footwork similar fundamentals so going
- 10:29through this as we're going zone Reed to
- 10:30the left
- 10:31looking at the quarterback does a good
- 10:33job of stepping in the bucket
- 10:34allowing the running back to have that
- 10:38path there to run down his toes to his
- 10:40play side a gap remember
- 10:42aiming point for the running back is the
- 10:43play side a gap you'll also notice that
- 10:45the the quarterback is putting the ball
- 10:47getting ready to put a ball on his
- 10:48backside leg you can see kind of how his
- 10:50arms are angled here that he's meeting
- 10:53the running back at the mesh point and
- 10:54his eyes are locked on this defensive
- 10:57end his read key and as he goes through
- 10:59the mesh point now is when ride in to
- 11:02side begins so he's gonna ride the mesh
- 11:05all the way to his front leg and then
- 11:07leading up to the mesh
- 11:08without running back you watch this
- 11:10footwork here and how similar it is to
- 11:11the back in the first clip his first
- 11:13step is 45 degrees towards his aiming
- 11:15point so there's his his step and then
- 11:18he's gonna replace so that's the J step
- 11:20that I'm talking about right there
- 11:21he's gonna step and then replace that
- 11:24foot with his backside foot okay now as
- 11:27you're repping this out and your work in
- 11:28the mesh point with your backs make sure
- 11:30they before you just throw them in into
- 11:33the fire here get them used to those two
- 11:35steps so make them feel have them feel
- 11:37both both of those steps so have them
- 11:39you know step 45 degrees towards their
- 11:41aiming point and then have them replace
- 11:44their backside foot so make sure they
- 11:46get that feel of what that what that's
- 11:47like for their cleats to be in the
- 11:49ground like that and then once they get
- 11:51those two steps down just have it repeat
- 11:52those two steps over and over again
- 11:54until they understand the step and
- 11:57replace and then once that happens and
- 11:59they get comfortable you'll notice it
- 12:00kind of turns into a little bit of a
- 12:02skip for the back so step and replace
- 12:04and now we're ready to go to the mesh
- 12:06what I really like about this at the
- 12:08mesh point is the relationship between
- 12:11the quarterback and their running back
- 12:12here quarterbacks not so much on his
- 12:13toes and the running back does a great
- 12:15job with his shoulders and how they're
- 12:18parallel to the line line of scrimmage
- 12:19just like I talked about in the previous
- 12:21clip his shoulders are right there right
- 12:23so that allows him to be able to see the
- 12:25whole field he can see the play side
- 12:27whether to bounce that he can bang it
- 12:30here and he still has the option to be
- 12:31able to come out and slip out the back
- 12:33side okay and just like I said in the
- 12:35first clip if his inge if his shoulders
- 12:37were more angled like like here because
- 12:39he's dead set on his aiming point then
- 12:42really he's only got these two options
- 12:43and if you're only taking two out of the
- 12:46three options you're really missing out
- 12:47on the benefit of running zone read
- 12:50because most of the time the big plays
- 12:52come from slipping out the back side and
- 12:54hitting those cut back lanes so again
- 12:56when you're machine and you're working
- 12:58this in your everyday everyday drills
- 13:01between your quarterbacks and running
- 13:02backs watch your running backs and make
- 13:04sure that they keep their shoulders and
- 13:06hips parallel to the line of scrimmage
- 13:07as they press up against their aiming
- 13:09point don't allow them to turn their
- 13:11shoulders and get their shoulders angled
- 13:13to where they're only playing one side
- 13:15of the field okay you can see right here
- 13:18how our running back with this shoulders
- 13:20parallel he's already peeking
- 13:22to the backside here and he's already
- 13:23looking at slipping off the back the
- 13:25reason being is because he knows
- 13:27priority is pressing the a gap and then
- 13:29if that's not there then he's got the
- 13:31option to bounce it outside so keep
- 13:34those shoulders parallel our back does a
- 13:36great job of that he realizes that that
- 13:39defensive ends way upfield which means
- 13:41that opens up a huge window that got
- 13:44sealed off from our right tackle to be
- 13:46able to run through our quarterback as
- 13:48he rides and decides at the mesh point
- 13:50he sees that defensive end play wide and
- 13:53upfield and so as he rides he makes the
- 13:57decision to give the ball to the running
- 13:58back our running back sees that window
- 14:01right there there's no one there and
- 14:02that leaves this place I'd linebacker to
- 14:05come all the way from the right side of
- 14:06the field to try to make a tackle here
- 14:07we have that walled-off running back
- 14:09does a great job he slips out the back
- 14:11side hits the cutback Lane and it's a
- 14:14huge play for us alright coach thanks
- 14:16for watching and tuning in today of how
- 14:18to coach the fundamentals of the mesh
- 14:20point between the quarterback and
- 14:21running back with the inside zone Reed
- 14:23if you have any questions about what I
