Clothes You’ll ALWAYS Regret Buying (What I’m Decluttering) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Do you ever look at your clothes and
- 0:01think, why did I buy this? Because I've
- 0:04recently done a wardrobe declutter and
- 0:06I'm asking myself that same question.
- 0:08So, I'm going to go through a couple of
- 0:09pieces that I'm decluttering, explain
- 0:12why I regret buying them, so that
- 0:14hopefully you can avoid my expensive
- 0:17mistakes, save your money, and make
- 0:20better and more intentional purchases in
- 0:22the future. So, one of my biggest
- 0:25problems that I've had in the past is
- 0:28that I keeping items that I like, but I
- 0:33don't love. So, maybe I love the idea of
- 0:36it, but there are one or two things
- 0:38about it that just like kind of bug me
- 0:40or I think could be better. And I'm
- 0:42slowly learning that if it's not a heck
- 0:44yes, then it's got to be a hell no. So,
- 0:48the first item that I'm going to
- 0:50declutter, and you might be surprised
- 0:52because I've worn it in a few of my
- 0:55videos is this brown suede belt. This is
- 0:59from Anderson's. I bought it from
- 1:00NetApporte maybe like 2 years ago. And
- 1:04don't get me wrong, when I look at it,
- 1:05I'm like, that is so beautiful. The
- 1:07chocolate brown suede with the gold
- 1:10buckle. I like these two like little
- 1:12gold bits here. It's really beautiful.
- 1:14But when I put it on, I always think I
- 1:17wish it was wider. I think I just prefer
- 1:20the look of a wider belt. Like kind of
- 1:23like the one I'm wearing now. You can
- 1:24see that it is like slightly wider than
- 1:27this one. So that is the first thing.
- 1:29And then the second thing is that the
- 1:31size is a bit funny. So I'm like waving
- 1:35this around because this is the bit that
- 1:37annoys me. So, when I put it on, and I
- 1:39obviously I'll show you in some clips,
- 1:41but when I put it on, the end of the
- 1:44belt flaps around because it's not long
- 1:47enough to tuck into this hole. It's not
- 1:50a hole, this belt loop here. And this
- 1:54belt also doesn't have another belt loop
- 1:58on it that I can like tuck it into. So,
- 2:01whenever I wear it, it's kind of flaps
- 2:03around and just really bugs me. I feel
- 2:07like I did notice these things when I
- 2:09first bought it and tried it on, but
- 2:12then I thought, "Oh, you know, it's such
- 2:13a nice looking belt. I won't mind." But
- 2:15it turns out I do mind. So that is why
- 2:18I'm going to sell this belt and
- 2:20hopefully it can go to a home that will
- 2:23love it cuz it is a really nice belt. So
- 2:25the second piece that I like but don't
- 2:27love is this cashmere sweater from
- 2:32Maximo Duty. I again I love the idea of
- 2:35it. I love gray. It's 100% cashmere. I
- 2:40really like the style. So, the polo
- 2:43collar and then the V-neck, but it's
- 2:47just really big. It's an extra small and
- 2:50it is it's really big. So, when I wear
- 2:52it, I find that I have to really play
- 2:54with it to tuck it in. And then I also
- 2:56find that the V-neck is a smidgen too
- 3:01low. I kind of wish it was a bit higher,
- 3:03especially cuz it doesn't have buttons,
- 3:04so I can't adjust it. So, I love the
- 3:07idea of it. And now that, and this is
- 3:10the thing about decluttering, like now
- 3:12that I'm going to declutter it and sell
- 3:15it on, I can look for one that I truly
- 3:19love and that ticks all the boxes. And
- 3:23that's why I'm kind of not too hard on
- 3:26myself because everything I'm trying to
- 3:28see everything as a learning experience.
- 3:31So at least now I know, okay, I don't
- 3:34want one that has a really low V-neck
- 3:36because then it's hard to wear things
- 3:39underneath. And it's all just a learning
- 3:41experience that I can pass on in video
- 3:45to you. I've got another Kashmir piece
- 3:47here from Reformation. I think I find
- 3:50knitwear quite hard to purchase. So if I
- 3:54find something that I like, but there
- 3:56are a couple things that I don't like
- 3:59about it, I will settle because I just
- 4:03find knitwear quite difficult to find
- 4:06like the perfect piece. But I'm
- 4:08obviously learning that I should just be
- 4:10pickier and wait for the perfect piece
- 4:12to come along because otherwise I'm just
- 4:15going to end up buying something and
- 4:16then, you know, having to get rid of it
- 4:18later on. But this is another piece,
- 4:20another Kashmir piece from Reformation
- 4:22that I really like. I really, really
- 4:25like it, but there's like some things
- 4:27that really bug me about it as well. So,
- 4:29I love that it is a high neck cropped
- 4:33jumper. I feel like that is quite hard
- 4:36to find. And for me, cuz I'm 5'2, I like
- 4:40cropped knitwear because I find that
- 4:42it's just like less material I have to
- 4:45contend with. And again, really nice
- 4:47cashmere, very soft. I like the color.
- 4:50Very festive, but the sleeves are so
- 4:56long. I just don't understand why
- 4:58they're so long. I don't know whose arms
- 5:00are this long. I mean, I know I'm
- 5:02petite, but I don't think an average
- 5:04sized person has arms that are this long
- 5:07either. Maybe that's just the style. I
- 5:09mean, it doesn't really matter. Now I
- 5:11know not to buy things with sleeves that
- 5:14are just extra extra long because it's
- 5:16just really annoying whenever I wear it.
- 5:18It again, it's just something that
- 5:19really bugs me. It makes me not want to
- 5:22wear it despite, you know, really liking
- 5:25all the other things about it. It's just
- 5:27annoying to wear because, you know, you
- 5:30want to lift something up or maybe
- 5:32you're like reaching over something and
- 5:34then the sleeve just knocks everything
- 5:35over. So yeah, I'm maybe I'm learning as
- 5:38I get older. I just want things to be
- 5:40easier. Maybe that's it. Maybe my
- 5:42patience is wearing thinner as I get
- 5:44older. Speaking of getting older, I
- 5:47think that maturing is also about not
- 5:51buying something just because of the
- 5:53brand. And this is something that I have
- 5:57definitely fallen victim to in the past.
- 6:01And so I have a few items that come
- 6:03under this category. So, the first one
- 6:06is this shirt from the Frankie Shop. And
- 6:09we all know the Frankie Shop. They have
- 6:12a very cool social media presence. You
- 6:16know, the influencers that wear the
- 6:18Frankie Shop are super cool, very sleek,
- 6:22have that like minimalist, you know,
- 6:25whatever. And I bought this shirt maybe
- 6:28about 5 years ago now. 5 years. Are we
- 6:32in? Yeah. 2025. 5 years ago. Don't get
- 6:35me wrong, it's a really nice shirt and I
- 6:38love the color and you know, at the
- 6:41time, I don't know, I just wanted to own
- 6:43something from the Frankie shop, but
- 6:46this shirt is like hilariously humongous
- 6:50on me. It's an extra small again, but
- 6:52it's an oversized shirt. And it's, you
- 6:56know, there's oversized in the right
- 6:58way, and then there's oversized that is
- 7:00just like way too big. And so I find
- 7:03this really difficult to wear. I mean,
- 7:06to be fair, I did wear it a lot when I
- 7:08was living in Australia because it's
- 7:10like a very, you know, breezy, open
- 7:12shirt. But after I moved back to London,
- 7:16I just don't really reach for it. It's
- 7:18just too big. You know, tucking it in is
- 7:20just not fun. And it's just I know deep
- 7:24down inside I only bought this because
- 7:26it was from the Frankie shop. The sad
- 7:29thing is I don't think I can sell this
- 7:31because I don't know if you can see
- 7:33there are marks on the back from I can't
- 7:36even remember what hotel I was in. I was
- 7:39in a hotel and I wanted to iron this and
- 7:42the iron that they had in the hotel must
- 7:44have just been like really old and rusty
- 7:46because I put it on and there are some
- 7:49like rusty brown marks on it now and I
- 7:53was never able to get them off. So I
- 7:54will still keep this. you know, its
- 7:56saving grace is that it's a 100% organic
- 8:00cotton. So, you know, at least it's a
- 8:03really good material. It's still a nice
- 8:05color. I do like this color. It's just
- 8:07gigantic. So, I'm just probably going to
- 8:08wear it like super super casually, you
- 8:12know. Unfortunately, the same cannot be
- 8:14said for the next item, which is a
- 8:19blazer and also the matching trousers
- 8:22from Gany. This again I bought about
- 8:26four or 5 years ago when Gany was like
- 8:30an upand cominging brand and I was you
- 8:35know what I think it was in the early
- 8:36days of my YouTube channel and I was you
- 8:40know just trying to stay relevant and
- 8:43you know what I mean when you want to
- 8:45buy a brand that is like seems cool to
- 8:48own right like I said this is all just a
- 8:50learning experience I don't do this
- 8:53anymore try not to do it anymore. You
- 8:55know, try to think twice about why do I
- 8:57actually want something? But yeah, I
- 8:58bought this from Gany. Very cool, Scandi
- 9:02brand at the time. I think they've been
- 9:05bought out now. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 9:07I'm not sure. I don't really keep up
- 9:08with the brand. Plus, I think their
- 9:10designs now are just too trendy and too
- 9:15out there for me. whereas when they
- 9:17first like came around, they were more
- 9:20like, you know, this kind of cool
- 9:22pinstripe blazer. Anyway, but the point
- 9:26is I I think this is, you know, still a
- 9:30really cool item. However, it is a
- 9:32polyester visous blend and that is just
- 9:36not something I would ever buy new now.
- 9:40And four or 5 years ago whenever I
- 9:43bought this, I was aware of natural
- 9:46versus synthetic fibers. But because I
- 9:48wanted to own something from this brand,
- 9:52I kind of like just set aside my
- 9:55clothing morals and was like, I don't
- 9:59care if it's made of polyester. Like,
- 10:01you know, it's a cool blazer. And I
- 10:03think I convinced myself that because
- 10:06it's a timeless item, it's a pinstripe
- 10:08blazer, it doesn't matter if it's
- 10:11polyester, I will wear it for a long
- 10:14time. And unfortunately, it's not true.
- 10:17I don't ever really reach for it because
- 10:20I find the material is just like it
- 10:22makes me too hot. The synthetic fibers
- 10:24make me too warm. So the point of this
- 10:26lesson here, I think, is don't bend your
- 10:30own values. just for the status of
- 10:35owning something from a certain brand
- 10:37because it's not worth it and you'll
- 10:40regret it later. Let's talk about
- 10:42secondhand or sale shopping because I
- 10:45think sometimes when we find an item
- 10:48that is on sale or pre-loved, all logic
- 10:53and
- 10:53reason can go out the window. I think
- 10:57just from the very nature of secondhand
- 10:59shopping, sometimes you can get caught
- 11:02up in a lot of feelings. So, you might
- 11:06feel like, "Oh my gosh, it was fate that
- 11:09I found this item. This item was here
- 11:12waiting for me just as I was searching
- 11:14for it." Or you might see a secondhand
- 11:17item and think, "I might not ever come
- 11:20across this again, so I should get it."
- 11:22Or you might feel like you're doing, you
- 11:25know, the planet some good by shopping
- 11:27secondhand. And all these feelings might
- 11:30culminate in you not being as picky or
- 11:33as discerning as you might have been if
- 11:36the item was brand new. So my first item
- 11:40that I bought pre-loved that I regret is
- 11:45this vest from and daughter. So let me
- 11:49hold it up nicely for you. I had wanted
- 11:52to purchase something last winter from
- 11:54and Daughter. You guys know I rave about
- 11:56my black Adah cardigan from Daughter
- 11:59that I wear all the time. And if you
- 12:02don't know and are a are a knitwear
- 12:04brand that specialize in wool. So they
- 12:07make really really good knitwear and
- 12:09their pieces are quite expensive.
- 12:11They're between like 2 to400. So it's
- 12:13quite expensive. And so I was looking
- 12:16secondhand to see if I could find
- 12:17anything. and this vest came up and I
- 12:21was so excited because firstly like I
- 12:24said I was looking for something from
- 12:26and secondly I was actually looking for
- 12:29a red knitted vest not necessarily from
- 12:32and the fact that those two things
- 12:35matched up I was like oh my god this is
- 12:37fate and it's an extra small so it was
- 12:41in my size and it was in excellent
- 12:44condition as you can see like hardly
- 12:46worn so this is the style that and
- 12:49daughter still do. And so I went on the
- 12:52andaughter website, looked at the size
- 12:54guide, everything, and thought, "Okay,
- 12:57great. Extra small. I can fit into it.
- 12:59Let me buy it." I think I got it for
- 13:02£80, which I thought was really good for
- 13:05100% lamb's wool, really good quality,
- 13:08blah blah blah blah blah. So I was
- 13:10really excited when it arrived. I was
- 13:13like anticipating its arrival. And
- 13:16unfortunately, I opened it and I don't
- 13:19know if you can tell, but for an extra
- 13:21small, this is
- 13:24ginormous. So, I measured it and it was
- 13:27a lot bigger than the extra small
- 13:30measurements that they had on the
- 13:31website. So, what I didn't realize is
- 13:34that the brand had actually updated this
- 13:37style. This is from a previous season.
- 13:39Like, they didn't have this color on the
- 13:41website because this color was from a
- 13:44previous season.
- 13:46And I think that the brand had updated
- 13:49this style to be a bit smaller
- 13:52basically. And so I was so disappointed.
- 13:56I just didn't take into account that
- 13:58that might be a possibility. I was just
- 14:01so excited. I wanted to buy it
- 14:03immediately. But what I should have done
- 14:05obviously is asked the seller for the
- 14:09exact measurements of this top. So yeah,
- 14:13I mean the lesson here is just to take a
- 14:15breather and get your mind straight. And
- 14:18I'll always ask for the measurements
- 14:20from the seller. Yeah, I was so sad.
- 14:23Every time I look at it, I'm like really
- 14:24disappointed cuz I love it. It's such a
- 14:28cool piece, but unfortunately I wear it
- 14:30and it you can just tell it's just too
- 14:31big for me. So yeah. So, I think that
- 14:34the same or similar can be said about
- 14:38sale items because sometimes we'll see
- 14:41things for a really good price or what
- 14:44we think is a really good price when
- 14:46actually it ends up not being a good
- 14:48price because we end up getting rid of
- 14:49it further down the line, but we see it
- 14:52and we think it's a great price. And so,
- 14:55again, all logic and reason go out the
- 14:58window. And that happened with these
- 15:02Dear Francis sandals, which I bought at
- 15:06the Dear Francis sample sale about 2
- 15:10years ago. Now, you all know how much I
- 15:12love Dear Francis. I have a few of their
- 15:15shoes. So, I was so excited when there
- 15:17was a sample sale in London, and clearly
- 15:21that excitement just clouded any
- 15:24reasoning in my head. So, at that sample
- 15:27sale, I bought these leather sandals.
- 15:30I'm not going to show you them on my
- 15:32feet because we've just come out of
- 15:33winter and my feet don't need a closeup
- 15:37in 4K. These lovely leather sandals I
- 15:40got, I actually don't remember how much
- 15:42I paid for them, but I remember
- 15:43thinking, "What a great price." And also
- 15:47I was there at the end of the sample
- 15:49sale and it was literally 30 minutes
- 15:52towards the end and they shouted all
- 15:55sample sale prices cut by half. And so I
- 15:58think I might have been on the fence,
- 16:00but then as soon as I heard them shout
- 16:02that cuz it was like 30 minutes until
- 16:03the end, I was like, "Okay, I'm just
- 16:06going to get them. Whatever." But they
- 16:07are so uncomfortable. The first time I
- 16:11wore them, they cut up my feet so badly.
- 16:15And you know, with shoes, sometimes you
- 16:18might think something's comfortable at
- 16:20first, but then you wear them and it
- 16:22turns out they're not comfortable. No,
- 16:24these are not comfortable from the get-
- 16:26go. They're very hard. The leather is
- 16:29very stiff and I should have known that
- 16:32they were not going to get more
- 16:34comfortable, but I was just swayed by
- 16:37the price and because they look really
- 16:39good as well, obviously, but you know,
- 16:41just because something looks good and is
- 16:43cheap. If it's not comfortable, like it
- 16:45doesn't mean anything. I almost don't
- 16:46even want to sell these on because I
- 16:48would feel so guilty at just whoever I
- 16:51sell these to. So, yeah. I don't know
- 16:53what I'm going to do about these, but
- 16:54it's just a really bad purchase. Someone
- 16:57please tell me why I keep buying this
- 17:01color when it looks so bad on me. So,
- 17:05this is what I call the classic capsule
- 17:08wardrobe mistake. So, the thing about
- 17:10capsule wardrobes is that I think the
- 17:13concept is great, but I think the
- 17:16message has gotten a little bit lost
- 17:19over the years. So when we think of a
- 17:22capsule wardrobe, I think our initial
- 17:25thought is like white t-shirt, blue
- 17:28jeans, white shirt, black blazer, and
- 17:31all the neutral colors, navy blue,
- 17:34beige, gray, camel, blah blah blah. You
- 17:37know what I mean? But those items are
- 17:40not the definition of a capsule
- 17:43wardrobe. The actual definition of a
- 17:45capsule wardrobe is a collection of
- 17:48clothes that can mix and match to create
- 17:52different outfits. That is all a capsule
- 17:55wardrobe is. So it doesn't have to
- 17:57contain these certain items that we get
- 18:01told a capsule wardrobe has to contain.
- 18:04The items can be whatever you want them
- 18:07to be as long as you are able to mix and
- 18:10match them together to create different
- 18:12outfits. And like I said, I think that
- 18:14that definition kind of got a little bit
- 18:17lost in translation along the way. And I
- 18:21also fell victim to the idea that I had
- 18:23to own pieces in a certain color or, you
- 18:29know, just certain pieces in general. I
- 18:31also used to think that a striped jumper
- 18:34was a capsule wardrobe staple, but I
- 18:36just don't think stripe jumpers look
- 18:38good on me. So, I also decluttered that.
- 18:40And then I kind of hung on to these cuz
- 18:43again, I thought beige, that is the
- 18:46perfect color to mix and match with
- 18:49other things in my wardrobe, which isn't
- 18:51wrong. But this shade of beige is so
- 18:55wrong on me. It just washes me out. I
- 18:58look really dull and lifeless. It is
- 19:01completely wrong for me. And I have two
- 19:04jumpers and one blazer in this kind of
- 19:06like cool beige tone which just does
- 19:10absolutely nothing for my skin and how I
- 19:15look. So I think there are two lessons
- 19:17here. One is that there's no such thing
- 19:21as a universal capsule wardrobe. It can
- 19:24be wherever you want it to be. And
- 19:26secondly, I've never had my own color
- 19:29analysis done, and I think that would be
- 19:32something that might be interesting. So
- 19:35maybe I might look into doing that. So
- 19:37another item that you may regret
- 19:40purchasing is one that I like to call
- 19:42right item, wrong fabric. If you are
- 19:46familiar with my channel, then you'll
- 19:48know we love natural fibers. We try and
- 19:51purchase natural fibers as much as
- 19:53possible. But there's also another layer
- 19:56to that. The fiber also needs to suit
- 19:59the item. So, here I have a navy blue
- 20:03fishermanstyle jumper from Cos. It's
- 20:06such a gorgeous knit. I love the
- 20:09ribbing, the way it looks. It has a
- 20:11really, really good weight to it, and
- 20:14it's 100% cotton. And you might be
- 20:17thinking, well, what's wrong with that?
- 20:20You know, 100% cotton, that's great.
- 20:22Cotton is natural. It's breathable. But
- 20:26unfortunately, that's actually the
- 20:28issue. So, because this jumper is
- 20:31cotton, it doesn't keep you very warm.
- 20:34So, this isn't something that I reach
- 20:36for during the winter time because I
- 20:38would rather wear my wool or cashmere
- 20:40jumpers that will keep me warm. So,
- 20:42then, okay, fine, wear it in the spring.
- 20:45But because it's so bulky and heavy,
- 20:48like there's a lot of cotton here, so
- 20:50it's quite a heavy jumper. It's also not
- 20:52something I want to reach for in the
- 20:54spring because I feel like it's just too
- 20:56bulky to wear and if I wear like my
- 21:00lighter jackets on top, it's just like
- 21:02too much material, too much fabric going
- 21:05on. I'd rather wear my thinner cashmere
- 21:08or marino wool jumpers. And then it's
- 21:11just definitely too heavy and thick to
- 21:14wear in the summer as well. And this has
- 21:17sat in my wardrobe for ages because on
- 21:21paper it sounds good. You know, it's
- 21:25really wellmade. I love the navy, like I
- 21:28said, and it's a natural fiber. It's
- 21:30100% cotton. It took me a long time to
- 21:33realize why I never wore it. And it's
- 21:36just because the fiber doesn't match its
- 21:39purpose. And figuring that out actually
- 21:41gave me a lot of clarity for future
- 21:44purposes. So, just because something is
- 21:46made out of a good fiber, it doesn't
- 21:48mean you're going to wear it if it's not
- 21:51made for the right use. So, I hope that
- 21:53this video showed you that when we're
- 21:56decluttering, it's really important to
- 21:59also ask ourselves why we haven't worn
- 22:01something or why we no longer want
- 22:04something so that we can use that
- 22:07information to make better purchases in
- 22:10the future. If you did enjoy this video
- 22:12and you want to stick around, then you
- 22:14should definitely watch this video on
- 22:15screen. It's all about how to find high
- 22:18quality pieces. I break down fabric
- 22:21composition, what to look for in a
- 22:24well-made garment, and just tips on how
- 22:27to shop better. Thank you so much for
- 22:29watching, and I will see you in the next
- 22:31video. Bye.
