- 2:06going to include
- 2:06homework and some practice suggestions
- 2:08later in the video and i strongly
- 2:10recommend that you pick up a mannequin
- 2:11to get the most out of this video
- 2:12i linked one down below make sure you
- 2:15get one with real human hair
- 2:16not synthetic i hope you guys are ready
- 2:19let's fix our bayonets and let's charge
- 2:20into this level
- 2:24it's hard to teach clipper over comb
- 2:26without mentioning sheer overcome
- 2:28but i will have a separate video on
- 2:30shareovercomb that's updated and until
- 2:32then i'm going to link this one
- 2:33right here as soon as the new video is
- 2:34available it will take its place
- 2:37[Music]
- 2:42among other things shear over comb is
- 2:44used for fine tuning
- 2:45removing dark spots adjusting density
- 2:48and detail
- 2:49whereas clipper over comb is going to be
- 2:51used for blending removing large amounts
- 2:53of bulk
- 2:53shaping the beard properly and adjusting
- 2:55the silhouette of the haircut towards
- 2:57the end
- 2:58but i'm sure you already know this so
- 2:59let's begin by breaking down how to do
- 3:02it essentially
- 3:02we're creating a clipper guard and we're
- 3:04trying to maintain a distance from the
- 3:06head
- 3:07to get the blend perfect or to just cut
- 3:09the hair to the proper length
- 3:10let's start with the combs
- 3:11[Music]
- 3:16the combs i prefer when it comes to
- 3:18teaching this technique in general
- 3:20are this one here it's basic it's cheap
- 3:22and it comes with a lot of clippers
- 3:24right in the box i posted a link for it
- 3:26below if you need to grab it
- 3:27and i do like the bright colors because
- 3:29they're a little bit easier to see the
- 3:31hair
- 3:31that's coming through versus the black
- 3:33combs which can be a little bit more
- 3:35difficult unless you're working on gray
- 3:36hair
- 3:36a few things i just want to get off my
- 3:38chest before we move forward
- 3:39this comb has a little channel that you
- 3:42can run your clipper
- 3:43along and there's a lot of little
- 3:44gimmicky stuff like this out there in
- 3:46the marketplace
- 3:47i think it's useless and i would not
- 3:49advise you to use this channel
- 3:50but don't fall for some of those
- 3:51gimmicks let's learn how to do this
- 3:53right which comb you choose will matter
- 3:55let me explain if i was to take this
- 3:56comb press it straight against the head
- 3:58and cut
- 3:58every single hair that stuck out i know
- 4:01for a fact that i'd be at about 1.5 in
- 4:03length
- 4:03which is 3 16 or 4.5 millimeters
- 4:06as long as we know that we can pre-cut
- 4:08the hair to the appropriate length which
- 4:10for me
- 4:10is normally a 1.5 or a 2. this is a
- 4:13great launch point
- 4:14because as long as we don't stray too
- 4:16far from the comb we can reduce the
- 4:17possibility of making mistakes
- 4:19[Music]
- 4:23now we know the idea of clipper overcome
- 4:25but let's really unpack what part of the
- 4:27comb we should be focused on
- 4:29and why one of the main advantages of
- 4:30clipper over comb is we're able to hold
- 4:32the hair without tension
- 4:34and this allows you to cut the hair how
- 4:35it will lay rather than cutting it from
- 4:37a normal guideline
- 4:38under tension because when we cut hair
- 4:40under tension especially when it's wet
- 4:42it shrinks back to its original fall
- 4:44position this is the only hair that
- 4:46matters the hair that falls at the
- 4:47bottom of the comb any other hair that
- 4:49falls in here
- 4:50it can be cut without issue because the
- 4:52hair at the bottom of the comb
- 4:53is actually directed out to 90 degrees
- 4:56first let me describe how you find 90
- 4:57degrees
- 4:58you can find 90 degrees anywhere on the
- 5:00head by holding your comb straight out
- 5:01from the head
- 5:02so all across the whole head it's not a
- 5:04magic number made up from scratch it
- 5:06comes from a protractor and it just
- 5:07means to direct
- 5:08straight out from the head when it
- 5:10relates to cutting hair now
- 5:11when you're combing through the hair
- 5:13you're actually holding the hair
- 5:14straight out from where it grows
- 5:16straight out from its base so now when
- 5:18other hair falls into your comb
- 5:20and it's cut if it's not at the bottom
- 5:22of your comb it's not really going to
- 5:23matter because it's going to remain
- 5:25longer
- 5:25if it falls to the bottom of the comb
- 5:27it's actually going to graduate for you
- 5:28let me demonstrate by cutting this
- 5:31okay so you're going to notice one thing
- 5:33straight off the bat
- 5:34this hair on top is a lot longer because
- 5:36it was directed away from 90 degrees
- 5:39it was directed off of its base and down
- 5:41here now the other thing that's actually
- 5:43happening
- 5:44is gradually this hair is getting longer
- 5:46and it's actually starting to blend the
- 5:48hair for you this is why clipper over
- 5:50comb works so well
- 5:51and this is why the hair that's in the
- 5:52bottom of your comb matters the most
- 5:54hopefully this visual aid makes it click
- 5:56with some people and we will be using
- 5:58visual aids like this
- 5:59to help teach how to cut the top because
- 6:01i do think this is going to be easier
- 6:02so in essence you are cutting the hair
- 6:04how it will naturally lay
- 6:10let's practice rolling the comb to do
- 6:12that we first got to be holding it
- 6:14correctly
- 6:14in the future you can do what you want
- 6:16but for now try it my way
- 6:18some people will hold the comb like this
- 6:20and there's two reasons why i don't do
- 6:21that
- 6:22one you have no control you have no
- 6:24range of motion
- 6:25and it's very easy if you hit a tangle
- 6:27or a snag to just wind up dropping it
- 6:29all together
- 6:29so how do i hold the comb actually we're
- 6:32going to grip it just like this
- 6:34with our two fingers pinching it and
- 6:36you're going to notice a few things
- 6:37right off the bat
- 6:38you got a lot more strength in your grip
- 6:40for one you can actually roll it
- 6:42180 degrees which means that i'm going
- 6:44to be able to get into this hair
- 6:46and i'm going to be able to roll it
- 6:47right out without a problem if i'm
- 6:49holding the comb like this thing i could
- 6:50barely move my wrist just a tiny bit so
- 6:52we're going to cut off a very small
- 6:53amount of hair each time
- 6:55and when we reset it we're actually
- 6:56viewing what we just did what the
- 6:58difference was
- 7:04first let's address the proper way to
- 7:05hold your clipper we have the handshake
- 7:07grip just like i was shaking hands with
- 7:09somebody
- 7:09i'm gonna hold it like this right we
- 7:11have the pencil grip
- 7:13all right just as i was writing with the
- 7:15pencil this is the other grip that we're
- 7:16using
- 7:17and we also have what i call the freddy
- 7:19the slasher realistically they call this
- 7:21clipper position number four
- 7:22and it's going to give you a little bit
- 7:23more control when we're doing some of
- 7:25these techniques
- 7:31okay there is a little tricky technique
- 7:32that you can use to use the clipper and
- 7:34the comb to cut the top of the hair
- 7:35if you so desire you can actually follow
- 7:38the exact same guidelines laid out in my
- 7:4090 degree how to cut the top video which
- 7:42i'll link right here
- 7:43the only thing that changes is we're
- 7:44gonna hold our clipper in our comb
- 7:45together
- 7:46in one hand right then we're gonna lift
- 7:48our sections into our fingers and we're
- 7:50gonna cut
- 7:50lift our sections cut lift our section
- 7:53cut
- 7:53that's a technique that you guys can
- 7:55experiment with on your mannequin and in
- 7:57the future if you guys want drop it in
- 7:58the comments and i'll make a full
- 7:59tutorial on that technique
- 8:01however i do think it's better to use
- 8:03your shears it'll give you more control
- 8:04and it'll give you a softer cut
- 8:11now be careful when you approach the
- 8:13comb don't bump and grind into it like
- 8:15it's o5 and wrap is still good
- 8:18this is more of a waltz and it's going
- 8:20to require a bit of finesse
- 8:21we want to be gentle when we take the
- 8:23clipper across the comb before we talk
- 8:25about this let's talk
- 8:26about how the clipper should be set up
- 8:27and i want to address this because a lot
- 8:29of comments came in
- 8:30should i use a guard should the clipper
- 8:31be in the open position should it be in
- 8:33the closed position
- 8:34well i'm going to tell you right off the
- 8:36bat i like to use a detachable clipper
- 8:38with a 5-0
- 8:39and this eliminates any confusion for me
- 8:41i can see exactly what's being cut as
- 8:43it's being cut off
- 8:44and i would recommend for you guys who
- 8:46don't have a detachable to put your
- 8:48clipper in the closed position
- 8:49now if you're not sure if you have the
- 8:50right tools or if your tools are set up
- 8:52correctly
- 8:52go check out my barber survival guide
- 8:54video before you keep going now
- 8:56those of you who do have your tools set
- 8:57up correctly and you understand it we're
- 8:59basically going to be holding the comb
- 9:01three different ways one is horizontal
- 9:03one is vertical
- 9:04and one is diagonal now when we move the
- 9:06clipper across the comb it might sound
- 9:08simple
- 9:09right but as we talked about it before
- 9:10in other videos you want to tip your
- 9:12clipper slightly so it can glide across
- 9:14these teeth without getting snagged
- 9:16if i go too far horizontal i can easily
- 9:18make a mistake
- 9:19what effect does cutting vertically
- 9:21horizontally or diagonally have
- 9:24on the head so let's talk about it
- 9:30the vertical hold pretty straight
- 9:32forward slide it in the hair tip it out
- 9:34and cut what sticks out now whenever i'm
- 9:36cutting vertically
- 9:37i can't recommend doing it that way i
- 9:39would recommend actually
- 9:40holding it horizontally and tipping it
- 9:42out now we can cut vertically
- 9:43we have a lot of control over our
- 9:45movements and it essentially mimics the
- 9:47same way that a guard works
- 9:48it's one of my favorite techniques to
- 9:50use in the taper area or just all around
- 9:52when i'm making small adjustments
- 9:54cutting diagonally now here's the king
- 9:57of all the techniques
- 9:58most of the time spent doing clipper
- 10:00over comb is going to be in the parietal
- 10:02ridge area so that's just simply where
- 10:04the hair leaves the comb if i put it on
- 10:05the side of the head like this
- 10:07and it travels all the way around the
- 10:08head now a couple things happen for me
- 10:10and a couple effects happen when i'm
- 10:12cutting diagonally when i'm cutting
- 10:13diagonally i begin to blend the hair
- 10:15already
- 10:16i have less chance of building up too
- 10:17much weight and it just becomes very
- 10:20easy for me to pivot around my anchors
- 10:22which we're going to talk about in a
- 10:23second
- 10:24now the third way we might cut is the
- 10:26horizontal hold
- 10:27when we're lifting and we're cutting or
- 10:28we're just holding it still and we're
- 10:30cutting
- 10:31now a lot of people have asked about the
- 10:33lift cut i'm going to tell you right now
- 10:35you do not need to lift when you cut you
- 10:36don't really need to move this
- 10:38as long as you're maintaining the
- 10:39distance it doesn't really matter what
- 10:40you're doing
- 10:41but when should you be lifting when
- 10:42you're cutting i do that when i'm trying
- 10:44to remove large amounts of hair
- 10:47quickly and i'm moving fast don't feel
- 10:49like you just have to do this fast for
- 10:50the sake of doing fast
- 10:52speed will come later as you develop
- 10:53your skills but for now
- 10:55just do it slow cut a very small amount
- 10:57of hair off comb it down
- 10:59reset it and use your eyes to check what
- 11:01adjustment just happened or what needs
- 11:02to happen next
- 11:04now you're going to come to a point
- 11:05where you're going to get the blend
- 11:06pretty good
- 11:07and then you know it's time to back off
- 11:08of this technique because again this is
- 11:10for removing a good amount of bulk
- 11:12getting the blend started but we're
- 11:13going to refine this with shear over
- 11:15comb
- 11:16or our guards or whatever else so don't
- 11:18be so hung up
- 11:19on making clip rover comb absolutely
- 11:21perfect because it is not the end all be
- 11:23all so how do i maintain consistency
- 11:25whether i'm holding it vertically
- 11:26horizontally or diagonally
- 11:28well the key is anchoring and pivoting
- 11:32so let's talk about that
- 11:38a lot of times you're actually going to
- 11:40see that my pinky i'm using my pinky to
- 11:42create some space from the head
- 11:43and maintain that distance wherever i'm
- 11:45at in the cut
- 11:46now i also might use my knuckle i might
- 11:49use my whole hand
- 11:50another way that i actually anchor is
- 11:52with the back of the comb
- 11:53when we're able to cut them closer
- 11:54lengths i can tip the back of the comb i
- 11:56can keep it pressed on the head
- 11:58and i can stay reasonably accurate
- 12:00because i have a nice anchor on the head
- 12:02now if i'm just floating out here it's
- 12:04very easy for me to make a mistake it's
- 12:05very easy for me to bully the comb
- 12:07so i would encourage you guys to create
- 12:08a brace use your knuckles
- 12:10use your finger use the back of your
- 12:12comb and try to maintain consistency
- 12:14now the nice thing is also the pivot now
- 12:17if i was to actually use my knuckles
- 12:19right here on this section
- 12:20i can just pivot around it and i can
- 12:22take care of a nice big section while
- 12:24maintaining my accuracy i would
- 12:25encourage you guys with your mannequins
- 12:27to try to set up
- 12:28try to use your pinky try to use your
- 12:30knuckle try to use your hand
- 12:32or try to use the back of your comb to
- 12:34create a nice anchor point
- 12:35and try to work on that pivoting
- 12:37technique so that you guys can develop
- 12:38some accuracy
- 12:39and with that being said let's head over
- 12:41to the shop and let's check out a full
- 12:42clipper over comb tutorial
- 12:44uh briefly i might add because i know
- 12:46i'm going to take up too much of your
- 12:47time
- 12:47but we want to hammer this out so i give
- 12:49you something great to practice with
- 12:57okay the operative word here is going to
- 12:59be to move slow
- 13:00we don't have to move fast we don't have
- 13:02to take off a whole lot just because you
- 13:03see other people doing it
- 13:05doesn't make it the case i'm just going
- 13:07to try to travel up the center
- 13:09in the back and i'm going to establish a
- 13:11guideline and once i reach the top
- 13:13or close to where i want the top to end
- 13:15i'm going to start transferring it out
- 13:17to the left and to the right i'm doing a
- 13:19couple diagonal holds here
- 13:21this is generally how i'll try to hold
- 13:22it if i'm trying to do any type of
- 13:23blending
- 13:24i just wanted to show it as an example
- 13:26the angle that i'm tipping the comb out
- 13:28does not have to maintain you don't have
- 13:30to maintain any type of consistency like
- 13:32you don't have to say it's got to be 45
- 13:34degrees
- 13:34hold it on the angle that makes sense
- 13:36and cut towards the bottom
- 13:38you're actually able to anchor the back
- 13:40of the comb right on the scalp
- 13:42and that's going to increase stability i
- 13:44always encourage you guys to anchor
- 13:45whenever you can
- 13:47and most of the time in a longer haircut
- 13:49like this that's going to be around the
- 13:50hairline because as you notice as i
- 13:52start getting up and lifting the comb
- 13:54further away from the head
- 13:55i have less options for an anchor but if
- 13:57you see my pinky
- 13:58sneaking in there creating a little
- 14:00stability i'm always trying to
- 14:02create some type of bridge because it's
- 14:03going to help you develop your
- 14:04consistency
- 14:06now on this right side i'm going to
- 14:08start moving the clipper a little bit
- 14:09different it's moving
- 14:10away from me i call this the pimp juice
- 14:13he's just back handing it but this is
- 14:14sort of like a backhand
- 14:16movement away and you just have to do
- 14:18whatever you got to do to get that
- 14:19clipper in there the ear is going to be
- 14:20in the way on this side
- 14:22normally i'll tip the ear down and i'll
- 14:24go around when i go around that front
- 14:25side
- 14:26but for the most part we just want to
- 14:27make sure that our back is good
- 14:29consistent and looking good and then we
- 14:31can transfer it out to the front
- 14:33just like in our blunt cut alright so
- 14:35here i am taking that guide you can see
- 14:37it falling
- 14:38out of the comb in the back and i'm just
- 14:40moving it forward
- 14:42just tipping it out on an angle down
- 14:44towards the hairline i can push it right
- 14:46up into the head
- 14:47and i can get that hair as close as
- 14:48possible with this comb
- 14:50however when i need to get closer i'll
- 14:52switch out my clipper for a trimmer
- 14:54and i'll pick up a taper comb and i can
- 14:56even use the small end of the taper comb
- 14:58if i need to uh for detailing or for
- 15:00getting closer but as you see right here
- 15:02this big comb
- 15:03i'm realizing right now that this isn't
- 15:04going to be good enough for me i want to
- 15:06get a little closer in his sideburns
- 15:08so i'm just going to switch out to a
- 15:09trimmer here in a second
- 15:11now there goes that horizontal hold
- 15:13where i'm sort of moving
- 15:14up with the clipper similar to a guard
- 15:17and all i'm doing is i'm holding the
- 15:18comb still
- 15:19and i'm moving it along that comb same
- 15:21thing with the trimmer over comb here
- 15:23holding it still lifting it slightly
- 15:25maybe but for the most part i'm just
- 15:27traveling along that comb just like it
- 15:29was a clipper guard just trying to
- 15:31maintain that length
- 15:32and that's pretty much it you guys i
- 15:34want you guys to go ahead and grab your
- 15:35mannequin
- 15:36give this cut a few tries don't take off
- 15:38too much in the first go-round or you
- 15:40just pretty much wasted your opportunity
- 15:42to practice
- 15:42but hopefully you can do a bunch of
- 15:44haircuts on that mannequin
- 15:46and develop some real skills so you can
- 15:47feel some confidence when you go into
- 15:49the shop with this or when you try it on
- 15:51an actual client
- 15:57now watching this video will not be
- 15:59enough for you to master this technique
- 16:00you're going to need some practice and
- 16:02i've heard all the excuses
- 16:04i don't know anybody who'll let me
- 16:05practice on them i can't get any
- 16:07practice
- 16:07here's your solution grab a mannequin
- 16:09and you can practice without the fear of
- 16:11making mistakes i would recommend trying
- 16:13a full haircut clipper over comb
- 16:15keep the hair around three inches long
- 16:16try blending some of them longer guards
- 16:18into the top
- 16:19and finish with the most important cut
- 16:21you should practice and that is going to
- 16:23be a flat top
- 16:24you may find this hideous or something
- 16:26that's beneath you
- 16:27but trust me this cup will be your
- 16:29greatest teacher to learn clipper
- 16:31overcome
- 16:31so get out there and start practicing
- 16:33fail make mistakes try again
