3. 0:04a clay county parent's dispute with his
4. 0:05local school board has drawn some
5. 0:07national attention after he had his
6. 0:08microphone turned off while attempting
7. 0:10to read a passage out of a book from the
8. 0:12fleming island high school library that
9. 0:14he considered pornographic action news
10. 0:16jake stofan joins us live from fleming
11. 0:18island high school now and jake you
12. 0:20spoke with that parent today
13. 0:25i did and that parent bruce friedman is
14. 0:27part of a national group called no left
15. 0:30turn that chronicles an ongoing list of
16. 0:33books that have been objected to by
17. 0:35parents contained in public schools
18. 0:37throughout the country now friedman
19. 0:39identified at least three books in clay
20. 0:42county public schools he wanted pulled
21. 0:44from library shelves including one here
22. 0:47at fleming island high school
23. 0:50that book is lucky by alice siebold the
24. 0:54book's description on amazon
25. 0:55characterizes it as a memoir of the
26. 0:58author who was brutally raped at 18 and
27. 1:01chronicles her recovery bruce friedman
28. 1:04sees it very differently i don't know a
29. 1:06good parent that wants their child to
30. 1:07read porn
31. 1:10friedman took his concerns to the june
32. 1:1230th meeting of the clay county school
33. 1:14board when he attempted to read an
34. 1:16excerpt from the book this happened turn
35. 1:19off his microphone please
36. 1:21and this was the explanation he was
37. 1:23given
38. 1:24there are state laws that private and
39. 1:26federal communications laws that
40. 1:28prohibit you from publishing these
41. 1:30things to a child
42. 1:31ironic isn't it
43. 1:33in a statement a district spokesperson
44. 1:35told us quote when addressing the board
45. 1:38since our meetings are televised we must
46. 1:40abide by fcc laws and regulations the
47. 1:43district informed us an official
48. 1:45complaint against lucky has now been
49. 1:47filed and the book has temporarily been
50. 1:50pulled from the shelf pending an
51. 1:51official review
52. 1:53friedman is glad the book is gone but
53. 1:55says he should never have had to
54. 1:57complain
55. 1:58why did i have to be the guy who found
56. 1:59it

59. 2:04and send them home safely on the bus

62. 2:11making the rounds on social media in
63. 2:12recent years they're part of a growing
64. 2:14interest in and at times resentment
