- 0:00in this video I'm going to go through an
- 0:01overview of what we're going to cover in
- 0:03the HSC course the engineering course
- 0:06for the first topic which is civil
- 0:08structures okay so you mean spending a
- 0:10term we actually will probably spend
- 0:12more time on civil structures than we do
- 0:14on the last two so the first two first
- 0:17two chapters take up a lot more time
- 0:19than the third and fourth chapter so
- 0:21we're going to go through that so always
- 0:23that we follow the same pattern which
- 0:25was we have historical and social
- 0:26influences and then we will go through
- 0:28mechanics will go through materials and
- 0:33communication so communication is going
- 0:35to be graphics and we have to do a
- 0:37report so the report has to be done
- 0:39civil or personal public we're going to
- 0:41do our report in civil so that is a
- 0:45pretty priest and the key things we're
- 0:47going to point out here okay so when we
- 0:49do mechanics the big thing that we're
- 0:50gonna learn this time around is trusses
- 0:52and bending now I think bending is
- 0:54incredibly important unfortunately tends
- 0:56to be under tested in my opinion in HSC
- 0:58we learn about stress and strain but I
- 1:00don't think there's anything we learnt
- 1:02that you have not already learned in
- 1:03year 11 okay for testing materials again
- 1:06I try to teach the testing material
- 1:08stuff as much as I can early now crack
- 1:10theory if you look see there's quite a
- 1:12bit of stuff here on cracks now me look
- 1:15I I have I cracks really trigger me I am
- 1:19I have a lot of cracks in my apartment
- 1:21and also there's like five pages in the
- 1:23textbook on cracks whereas me I think
- 1:25you could sum up cracks in one line
- 1:27which is if you have a crack and you
- 1:29want to stop the crack from growing
- 1:30drill a hole at the end that is it right
- 1:33literally I've told you everything that
- 1:34you need to know about cracks but we
- 1:36will go through the book ceramics so
- 1:38that's obviously going to be cement and
- 1:39concrete it's also going to be bricks
- 1:41glass we've already learned about glass
- 1:42pretty much all I have to teach you
- 1:44about glass we've already done we're
- 1:47going to learn about composites again
- 1:48covered pretty much everything here we
- 1:50haven't talked about geotextiles very
- 1:52much yet concrete is considered
- 1:54composites we all saw them at ceramics
- 1:57corrosion is we're gonna corrosion big
- 1:59topic so corrosion is something we will
- 2:02probably spend several lessons on okay
- 2:04then we going to talk about
- 2:05recyclability materials again not a huge
- 2:08amount that I have to say about this
- 2:10there is more and more we are working on
- 2:12try
- 2:13to reduce the we always try to reduce
- 2:15the amount materials we use there is an
- 2:17option for like reverse garbage where
- 2:19people can if you dispose of things well
- 2:21that we can use to reuse these materials
- 2:23crushed concrete can be used as Road
- 2:25base and things like that
- 2:27but ultimately it's not something we
- 2:29focus heaps on so just putting it heads
- 2:32up when we get to straighten standards
- 2:34the big thing that you're gonna be
- 2:35assessed on in terms of your assignment
- 2:39is gonna be dimensions now I didn't
- 2:40focus on that life's much last year this
- 2:42year I'm gonna focus more on dimensions
- 2:44okay we're also going to do a little bit
- 2:47of sketching again we haven't done much
- 2:49sketching in last year because there's
- 2:51just not a whole lot of marks in the HSC
- 2:53I'm gonna probably give you more
- 2:54homework to do this year on sketching
- 2:56and we'll have to do CAD as part of this
- 3:00assignment so that's going to be a
- 3:02couple of changes okay so that's the
- 3:04that's what we're covering that's what
- 3:05we have to do in the next ten weeks or
- 3:07so and what are we gonna have a look at
- 3:11as well okay in terms of the description
- 3:16of engine or what does civil engineers
- 3:18do well we've got different kinds of
- 3:19civil engineers structural Transport
- 3:21hydrology geotech so civil engineer is
- 3:25responsible for the design and
- 3:26management structures and infrastructure
- 3:28projects this includes things like water
- 3:30supply so pipes transport networks so it
- 3:33also includes structural engineering
- 3:35which includes things like buildings it
- 3:38can include things like towers airports
- 3:40a whole bunch of different fields okay
- 3:43when we look at civil engineers their
- 3:46roles and responsibilities civil
- 3:47engineers need to design solutions for
- 3:49infrastructure needs right so everyone
- 3:52has to design solutions all engineers
- 3:53find solutions they find infrastructure
- 3:56needs solutions right everyone has to
- 3:59worry about social and cultural impacts
- 4:00health and safety everyone has a role
- 4:02Engineers have to do some calculations
- 4:04they calculate forces they apply a
- 4:06knowledge of materials to design
- 4:08structures adequate to withstand those
- 4:11forces so we so the big thing I'm going
- 4:13to sort of step back for a second and
- 4:15say so what are civil engineers do well
- 4:17they have to figure out or guess what is
- 4:21a reasonable amount of load the
- 4:22destructure needs to take and once
- 4:25they've figured out what it needs
- 4:27they design something that's going to be
- 4:28suitable now it is impossible to make
- 4:31something that will never break right
- 4:33because if the mother of all earthquakes
- 4:35hits your bridge right you're not going
- 4:38to be able to design for that and it
- 4:39wouldn't be cost-effective right
- 4:41something I say many times is anyone can
- 4:43build a bridge it takes an engineer to
- 4:45build the cheapest bridge that is just
- 4:47good enough to reliably not fall down
- 4:49right so to withstand the forces that we
- 4:53have calculated all the counter forces
- 4:55that are specified by our strength by
- 4:57these these standards in our case this
- 4:59trend standards okay we consider
- 5:01economic impacts now look this is one of
- 5:04the things we often undersell but in
- 5:05actual practice if you can't make money
- 5:07right you can't pay the bills you're no
- 5:09longer an engineer right if you can't
- 5:11pay pay for your wages you have to do
- 5:13another line of work
- 5:14very few put in Janine's can afford to
- 5:16do it for free okay now you have to plan
- 5:19and supervise construction or you have
- 5:22to supervise the design but there are
- 5:24civil engineers who supervise
- 5:25construction right probably the majority
- 5:27of Engineers who work as civil engineers
- 5:30they're probably more focused there are
- 5:33more who hadn't focused on the
- 5:34construction side then there are who
- 5:36have focused on the design side and I
- 5:38think that a lot of people are surprised
- 5:40at that
- 5:40a lot of people you know especially a
- 5:42very book smart nerds
- 5:44say hey I wouldn't go be an engineer
- 5:46because I like maths and then they find
- 5:48out that two thirds of Engineers work on
- 5:49in construction and it's a very
- 5:52different world so when you're designer
- 5:54you wear a tie and you're going to work
- 5:56in a nice air-conditioned office and you
- 5:59whereas when you're a site engineer
- 6:01you're wearing you know the denim the
- 6:06denim work hy-vee's and hardhat and it's
- 6:09how many times you have to swear at
- 6:11someone to get someone to get a job done
- 6:14they're also engineers civil engineers
- 6:17are in charge of maintenance and
- 6:18operations so a lot of civil engineers
- 6:20work for councils and their job is just
- 6:23going and maintaining the roads filling
- 6:24in the potholes doing the little bits
- 6:26and pieces here and there to make things
- 6:27better ok so that's what civil engineers
- 6:30do we can close that I was gonna focus
- 6:36too much on these syllabus outcomes okay
- 6:39what I'm going to look at now is what
- 6:40the book
- 6:40to say about what civil engineers do so
- 6:45for this chapter the chapter book is
- 6:47divided in the same way so we've got
- 6:49historical and civil developments in
- 6:51civil structures it talks about how
- 6:53they're focusing on bridges rather than
- 6:54dams or pipelines or something like that
- 6:56we've already covered that in other
- 6:58videos but I will pause this to show a
- 7:02nother just quick summary of bridges
- 7:05that will kind of give you the main
- 7:08points of a little bit now I did show
- 7:13this briefly when we talking about
- 7:16talking about bridges in the history
- 7:19lesson but this would be a very thick
- 7:21very quick and effective summary so this
- 7:24is an Airbus a380 most of you guys have
- 7:26seen one of those this is the Titanic it
- 7:28was a big ship so this is giving you a
- 7:30perspective of 100 meters so we have old
- 7:34bridges like Trajan's bridge we have the
- 7:37rialto which was the first the revision
- 7:39of bridges when we had the Renaissance
- 7:43this is London's Tower Bridge and then
- 7:46we have all the fourth bridge which is
- 7:49quite like you can see roughly how
- 7:50that's a very very long bridge here we
- 7:52have the heart Sydney Harbour Bridge we
- 7:54have the more recent I'm not going to
- 7:57ciao TN men don't try and do the tones
- 8:00then we have the Golden Gate Bridge
- 8:04which was the longest bridge for a very
- 8:05long time and now we have the Akashic
- 8:07kyoko bridge akashik echo okay again
- 8:12don't care enough to try and pronounce
- 8:14it properly bridge which is huge by
- 8:16comparison and then we have the Millau
- 8:20Viaduct which is in France showing that
- 8:23that is just remembering that that is as
- 8:25tall as the Eiffel Tower at that tower
- 8:26there okay so that's a rough summary of
- 8:29bridges and that's enough bridges that
- 8:31you could talk about the significance of
- 8:32this you could pick two of those and
- 8:34compare them and say how is this these
- 8:36innovations come about well improvements
- 8:39in design improvements in materials yeah
- 8:42so an improvement of design means that
- 8:44we can design more effectively more
- 8:45efficiently improvements in materials
- 8:47allow us to build more bridges more
- 8:49economically okay so I can close that
- 8:55now what I'm going to go into okay so
- 8:59environmental implications and materials
- 9:01okay so we'll go through that okay so
- 9:05the next big thing the big focus on this
- 9:07topic is trusses so trusses we're going
- 9:10to talk about reactions we're going to
- 9:12talk about some different kinds of
- 9:14reactions calculating reactions using
- 9:15moments we're then going to learn how to
- 9:17calculate trusses and because that goes
- 9:24on for quite a while like I said it's an
- 9:25important part we're then going to learn
- 9:26about bending and kept bending
- 9:29calculations which in my opinion are the
- 9:31most important thing in a civil engineer
- 9:33to know even if it's not tested very
- 9:36much okay moving on from there I will so
- 9:43two resources that I'm going to talk
- 9:45about both the Nutri videos to help you
- 9:48get started on trusses so there's a guy
- 9:50called HSC engineering and in his videos
- 9:53he he has one video that explains the
- 9:57method of joints which I actually like
- 10:01especially if you have to solve a whole
- 10:03trust but these days I don't really
- 10:05teach it very much but because it's in
- 10:07the syllabus I am required to teach it
- 10:08for a second or two but then most people
- 10:11and most engineering teachers will then
- 10:13focus on the method of sections there's
- 10:16two ways of solving trusses most people
- 10:18will focus on that there's also a lesson
- 10:20on bending to two episodes on two videos
- 10:25on bending as well I also have a in my
- 10:28collection I have bending somewhere here
- 10:32bending there and a trust question there
- 10:34so we'll focus back and I will probably
- 10:37add some more as I go on but for the
- 10:39moment that's what happened right now
- 10:41okay so going back to the book so
- 10:48calculating the bending stress and a
- 10:51little bit of a description of when we
- 10:53deform and distribute loads she so we
- 10:56have talked about shear but we've never
- 10:58talked about more complicated examples
- 10:59which for instance of punching a hole or
- 11:01if we're dealing with bolts they're the
- 11:04two main cases that are more complicated
- 11:06that we work about here then
- 11:08the Eagles flea stuff which you already
- 11:09know okay so moving on there's testing
- 11:13now I've already talked a lot about
- 11:14testing I think I have a video certainly
- 11:17have a pretty comprehensive description
- 11:19on Facebook then there's look at let's
- 11:23say many pages on cracks right so
- 11:26where's a cracking start so one page two
- 11:29pages three pages three and a half pages
- 11:33right what's my summary with three pages
- 11:35been my summary drill a hole at the head
- 11:39of the crack that is that is my summary
- 11:41of those three pages okay Ceramics so
- 11:43we're talking about glass right we
- 11:45talked about bricks we talked about
- 11:48pre-stressed and pro stress concrete
- 11:50which we talked a little bit about
- 11:51already but not much asphalt which is
- 11:54what we make our roads tarmac is for tar
- 11:56macadam because the NGO called macadam
- 11:58was about who came up with artificial
- 12:01tar tar is the thing that's existed
- 12:03since a long time like there's the tar
- 12:05pits in California but asphalt is
- 12:10asphaltic cement is where we take
- 12:13man-made a man-made product we take
- 12:16bitumen and we add Rock Orso aggregates
- 12:19to get asphaltic cement or asphalt ok
- 12:24laminates where we talk about different
- 12:26ways that we can make long sections of
- 12:28wood we didn't spend a fair bit of time
- 12:31talking about corrosion and then
- 12:34communication so here we're really going
- 12:35to focus on threaded sections of bolts
- 12:39now threaded sections are incredibly
- 12:40important that is something there's all
- 12:42my trusses and threaded sections are
- 12:44almost certainly going to be an exam and
- 12:46I have not only do I have examples where
- 12:49I've gone through questions from past
- 12:51papers but here I have a video that I've
- 12:53recorded where I go into great detail of
- 12:56all the stuff that you need to know
- 12:57about bolts so that you are you can go
- 13:00through that this is another example
- 13:02where I've talked about threaded
- 13:04sections they're now not saying it like
- 13:06I always say nothing everything my thing
- 13:08is perfect but it's a starting point ok
- 13:11so in the time I've got left for this
- 13:12video I'm going to talk about the
- 13:14assignment so we've talked about the
- 13:15summon briefly these are the different
- 13:17outcomes that requires us to do and
- 13:19we're going to design a truss
- 13:22considering structural and economic
- 13:23factors we're going to do drawings to a
- 13:25s eleven hundred we're going to plan our
- 13:27time and manage our time record our
- 13:30management of our time and then we're
- 13:32going to analyze our results okay so
- 13:34we've talked about this but it needs to
- 13:37be uploaded to Moodle it needs to be all
- 13:40your own work doctor certificate just a
- 13:43that there are doctors who will come to
- 13:44you and it's hard to know if you don't
- 13:45have gastro if you're going to be sick
- 13:49design requirements okay that might
- 13:51change because we're going to be making
- 13:53our once-ler differently report
- 13:55requirements it's going to have three
- 13:56main sections you can have a design
- 13:58section and management section and
- 13:59analysis section design you're going to
- 14:01come up with three different designs
- 14:03you're gonna pick one of them then
- 14:05management you're gonna say what your
- 14:07group did and you're going to talk about
- 14:08how well they did it right so you're
- 14:10gonna say what in advance what you're
- 14:11going to do and then I'm gonna say what
- 14:13you did do that's really important in
- 14:15engineering management okay you're going
- 14:18to document your process you're going to
- 14:20calculate all the forces in your truss
- 14:21you're going to calculate the critical
- 14:23member and you're gonna write about your
- 14:26load to weight ratio which is how we're
- 14:27going to assess it we're going to
- 14:31include your predictions about what how
- 14:33it went whether or not went how you
- 14:34expected and how it could be improved
- 14:37I'll quickly show you now a sample of a
- 14:40students one in twenty seconds so this
- 14:45is reports got a title page got an
- 14:47abstract table of contents could have
- 14:49been a little bit nicer but here's these
- 14:50suggested solutions he's got three
- 14:52designs and suggestions here's his
- 14:55sketches with dimensions the dimensions
- 14:57are not too Australian standard and
- 14:59that's really important
