- 0:01Facebook and Alex Stamos its chief
- 0:04information security officer our parting
- 0:07ways the departure comes on the same day
- 0:10that Facebook said that it's
- 0:12investigating whether it allowed a data
- 0:14company called Cambridge analytical to
- 0:16access and allegedly keep data profiles
- 0:19of 50 million users former Trump adviser
- 0:22Steve Bannon sat on Cambridge analytic
- 0:25ha's board and the Trump campaign ended
- 0:27up paying the company nearly six million
- 0:30dollars but before CA could land that
- 0:34contract it had to show that its voter
- 0:36profiling model worked on a mass scale
- 0:38and to do that it needed an epic bundle
- 0:41of data vice news spoke to the
- 0:44whistleblower who made it all happen my
- 0:47name is Christopher Wylie I'm a data
- 0:49scientist and I helped set up cameras
- 0:51analytic I when's the abandon wanted to
- 0:53build an arsenal of weapons for his
- 0:56culture war he liked the idea of working
- 0:58with a company that has lots of military
- 1:00clients fundamentally white Cambridge
- 1:02analytical wise was the transposition of
- 1:06military style information operations
- 1:09and propaganda to a an American
- 1:12political consultancy so that it can
- 1:14create a web of disinformation on
- 1:16Facebook and other platforms some people
- 1:18would say watching this is basic data
- 1:22analysis Obama did it Hillary Clinton's
- 1:25the different saying this is the
- 1:26difference
- 1:27first of all Obama didn't win because of
- 1:30of disinformation the fundamental
- 1:32difference between standard political
- 1:35targeting and information operations is
- 1:38this idea of informational dominance I
- 1:40inject my messaging in all the streams
- 1:43of information around my target so that
- 1:45they start to think they start to
- 1:47perceive things that aren't necessarily
- 1:48true but in their mind it is and they go
- 1:51and behave in a particular way that I've
- 1:53led them to so that I can exploit that
- 1:55vulnerability the premise of of
- 1:57Cambridge analytic app is to warp
- 1:59people's perceptions to gain an
- 2:01objective in a statement today
- 2:03Cambridge analytic has said it's deleted
- 2:06all the data and that it didn't use the
- 2:08data or personality targeting and it's
- 2:10work for Trump where is all that dates
- 2:13now I don't know you have to ask camera
- 2:14channel Innoko but did Facebook contact
- 2:16you and asked you to delete it yeah
- 2:18Facebook asked me to sign a forum which
- 2:20I did I filled it I just like put in
- 2:22your name and check a box and then sign
- 2:23it saying what that I promise to delete
- 2:27or destroy the all the data that was in
- 2:292016
- 2:30and did you delete all the data yeah in
- 2:32its own statements Facebook said it's
- 2:34conducting an audit to determine what
- 2:36happened with the data what is Facebook
- 2:39referring to when it says that several
- 2:41days ago we received reports that
- 2:42contrary to the certifications we were
- 2:44given not all data was deleted you know
- 2:46what that's about
- 2:47ask do you general that occur what this
- 2:49is the thing that's really frustrating
- 2:50me right now is everybody's asking me
- 2:52this I'm the one putting it out and
- 2:54saying hey guys let's investigate this
- 2:56matter and for some reason I'm the one
- 2:58that's being questioned if your other
- 2:59than Cambridge I don't think that you'll
- 3:01have insights oh you'll be able to do
- 3:03that I've offered and I've offered and
- 3:05offered and offered to help Facebook
- 3:07they turn around and without telling me
- 3:09banned me from their system after they
- 3:11realized that I was going public about
- 3:13this matter why do you think they've
- 3:15taken such a strong response I don't
- 3:17know
- 3:18I think they claim that is for the
- 3:19security of their users but like banning
- 3:21me on Instagram so that I can't see like
- 3:23well-curated avocado toast isn't really
- 3:25going to help the security of the
- 3:26platform I'm sorry Facebook it's silly
- 3:28I'm here willing to talk it but but but
- 3:32but punishing me for being a
- 3:35whistleblower is not appropriate
- 3:45you
