Full transcript
- 0:04What's up guys? It's your boys Awoki
- 0:06back out with another of course Chris
- 0:08Watts Nicole Kessinger video. You guys
- 0:11want me to continue because we want to
- 0:13keep this case alive so that hopefully
- 0:16one day NK miss red flag I found my red
- 0:19flag. I little one.
- 0:23We'll give this one a little bit of some
- 0:24fun because the other one is over there.
- 0:26But um red flag galore
- 0:30that this woman was involved in some way
- 0:32or shape or form and I love this comment
- 0:35that I saw.
- 0:36This case deserves fresh eyes. I loved
- 0:40that statement alone. It does need fresh
- 0:43eyes. It needs actual
- 0:45or actual professionals that go into
- 0:48this case completely non-judgmental
- 0:51about who
- 0:53uh dealt with it before. Let them
- 0:56discover and let them decide if Nicole
- 0:59Kessinger warrants
- 1:01to come in
- 1:02for an interview or interrogation.
- 1:05And um you guys said that this video
- 1:07definitely centralizes on that.
- 1:09And I'm like let's get into it. So, grab
- 1:12a chair, get comfortable. Also, don't
- 1:14forget to subscribe to my YouTube
- 1:15channel by hitting that wiper icon that
- 1:17says um
- 1:19subscribe. Hit the bell icon next to it
- 1:22so when I do post videos like this one,
- 1:24you guys will get that little ring
- 1:25notification that I've posted that video
- 1:27and then you guys can watch, comment,
- 1:28like, and share. And again, I thank you
- 1:31so much for the love and support that
- 1:33you guys do show on my channel. We're
- 1:34trying to get to 100k so help a brother
- 1:36out. Um we're getting there closer and
- 1:39closer by the day.
- 1:41Nails pace
- 1:42but slow and steady wins the race. And
- 1:44then don't forget to go over to Secret
- 1:46in the Dark. It's been a while since we
- 1:48watched from them. But again, all my
- 1:49videos that are literally that I watch
- 1:51now are from you guys that I just see
- 1:54collectively how many people want me to
- 1:57watch these videos and I see which one's
- 2:00the most popular to watch and I'll watch
- 2:02that one. So. And that's what we're
- 2:04doing is we're watching, we're reacting,
- 2:06we're commentating and giving our two
- 2:09cents and not letting this case die for
- 2:11one for the haters that go on to Shannan
- 2:14and just blast her
- 2:18her her legendary life that she had and
- 2:21they just slam it because if they they
- 2:23didn't or they're either jealous or
- 2:25they're against her
- 2:27for some stupid reason.
- 2:29And then we're here because of Nicole.
- 2:31One of I think the reason why this case
- 2:34will not die is because this woman has
- 2:36not been interrogated or looked at even
- 2:39remotely more than those stupid
- 2:41interviews that made it look like she
- 2:43was not involved. So,
- 2:46we're going to dive down this video
- 2:48and let's get into it right now.
- 2:51>> I think if somebody came up and put
- 2:53their hands around somebody's neck the
- 2:55first thing a victim's going to do is
- 2:57>> check themselves.
- 2:58>> grab on to the hands or the arms and try
- 3:00to pull them away or scrape or claw or
- 3:02bite or whatever
- 3:05um to try and get that person's hands
- 3:06off of their throat. There wasn't
- 3:08anything like that in in Shannan and and
- 3:10so that obviously caused us to think
- 3:12was she sleeping? His statement to
- 3:14investigators was they were very clearly
- 3:16obviously dead so I decided to dispose
- 3:18of their bodies. He didn't call 911, he
- 3:20didn't call try CPR, you didn't even
- 3:22check on them to see if they were
- 3:24breathing. When you hear that, you're
- 3:26thinking this just doesn't add up.
- 3:29>> So then there was some talking.
- 3:31And then how did you get on top of her?
- 3:33How did that happen?
- 3:34>> It's like when I got in the bed, I just
- 3:36pretty cuz she was laying
- 3:38cuz she was cuz she was sleeping, she
- 3:39was laying like face down which she
- 3:41really never does.
- 3:42>> Okay.
- 3:43>> And I was I just got in the bed and I
- 3:44kind of nudged her and then she like
- 3:46>> Did he say she was sleeping on her
- 3:47stomach?
- 3:51>> How did you get on top of her? How did
- 3:52that happen?
- 3:53>> It's like when I got in the bed, I just
- 3:55pretty much she was laying
- 3:57when she was when she was sleeping, she
- 3:58was laying like face down which she
- 4:00really never does.
- 4:01>> Okay.
- 4:01>> And I was I just got in the bed and I
- 4:03kind of nudged her and then she like
- 4:04kind of rolled over and then I was just
- 4:05like was like right there on top of her.
- 4:07>> Okay.
- 4:08And so that was after you gotten ready?
- 4:10>> Mhm.
- 4:10>> Okay, so you go down, you make your
- 4:12>> I don't know, I've never been pregnant,
- 4:13so
- 4:14I've had food baby, but um it's a joke,
- 4:17my gosh, I have to sit there and say
- 4:19that because the people will be like The
- 4:20walkie said he could get pregnant. What?
- 4:22We need a Google We need a Twitter tweet
- 4:24or or what's it called? Twitter that?
- 4:28But anyways, um
- 4:32Now I just lost my thought.
- 4:36Turn it. See what old age does?
- 4:38>> Food.
- 4:39>> Well, I got like house keys and another
- 4:41cup things I would maybe I put them in
- 4:43the bed.
- 4:43>> Okay. And then so this is we talked a
- 4:45little bit earlier today about you know,
- 4:47there was all of these things playing in
- 4:49your mind where you just didn't even
- 4:50want to go another second without having
- 4:52this conversation or without some sort
- 4:54of completion, right? And then so you
- 4:56come back, she's asleep
- 4:59and then you just kind of nudge her.
- 5:00>> Yeah, I just kind of like, "Hey."
- 5:02>> Oh, I was going to say if you guys could
- 5:04tell me
- 5:05the way that he states her sleeping, is
- 5:08that possible? I mean
- 5:10I've heard a lot of different avenues
- 5:11for people that sleep certain ways when
- 5:14they're pregnant, but I'm just like I'm
- 5:15just trying to see if he's lying about
- 5:17it cuz I I do feel that
- 5:20he caught her off guard. Either she was
- 5:23sleeping or he was behind the door when
- 5:26she came into the door. Like I don't
- 5:28know. Um
- 5:31But that's what I was going to mention.
- 5:32>> Look out for glare.
- 5:33>> And was there nudge talk for 20 minutes
- 5:35or was it just nudge and then all of a
- 5:36sudden you're on top of her?
- 5:38>> No, it's pretty much on top.
- 5:39>> Okay, so that happened pretty quickly.
- 5:40>> Yeah, it was that that was kind of
- 5:41pretty much all talk. Okay, that was
- 5:42just right there.
- 5:43>> And was there talking?
- 5:45>> Yeah.
- 5:45>> Okay. And so a nudge, a talk, She's
- 5:48laying down and you're standing up?
- 5:49>> I was on I was like I I crawled back I
- 5:52got on my side of the bed.
- 5:54>> Uh-huh.
- 5:54>> And I just like I just do like that.
- 5:56>> Oh, okay. And then you're talking while
- 5:58you're on top of her?
- 5:59>> Mhm.
- 6:00>> Okay. That seems confusing to me.
- 6:02Is that actually what happened?
- 6:04>> Yeah.
- 6:04>> Okay.
- 6:05Um and so
- 6:06>> She was fine like just laying there when
- 6:08you trying to talk to her while you're
- 6:10on top of her?
- 6:11>> thought we were going to sexy her or
- 6:12something.
- 6:13>> Oh, okay.
- 6:14Okay. And how long did you talk?
- 6:16>> I don't know about 15 20 minutes.
- 6:18>> Really? In that position?
- 6:19Okay. And was there any signs?
- 6:21>> I don't think so.
- 6:21>> No. Okay. Maybe she
- 6:22>> I'm
- 6:23basically from
- 6:25since you know her and maybe she maybe
- 6:26thought maybe I got to go get I don't
- 6:28know.
- 6:29>> Okay.
- 6:29And and I don't harp on it too much, but
- 6:32I'm just trying to think
- 6:34if my wife's 4 months pregnant and it's
- 6:375:00 in the morning and I want to talk
- 6:39and I want to get on top of her, that's
- 6:41just not going to fly.
- 6:42>> No.
- 6:42>> So, I find it confusing.
- 6:44Is that really what happened here? Okay.
- 6:46And then talk for about 15 minutes and
- 6:48then
- 6:49>> really going to believe him?
- 6:50>> he did and then your hands are on her
- 6:51neck.
- 6:52Yeah.
- 6:54All right.
- 6:55Um
- 6:56>> What did this talk What was What did the
- 6:57talk consist of?
- 6:59>> Basically it just didn't
- 7:01I don't know. Oh, at first it was more
- 7:03of like the
- 7:05selling the house type of thing or not
- 7:07going to Aspen or trying to maybe go in
- 7:09a at a different time and then it just
- 7:10switched all for the
- 7:12>> He had tickets with Shannon to go to
- 7:15Aspen
- 7:17that weekend.
- 7:20He goes and ends up
- 7:22murdering his wife and then looking at
- 7:24Aspen trips
- 7:26with Nicole.
- 7:32>> Well, I don't feel like I'm compatible
- 7:33with you anymore. Not compatible.
- 7:35Like that.
- 7:37And that's where you got to the eating
- 7:39part of it.
- 7:40>> Okay.
- 7:41Did she ever say at some point get off
- 7:42of me or anything like that?
- 7:43>> That day yeah. And
- 7:45that's just cuz I don't want you to feel
- 7:47like you know cuz
- 7:49where I was it was kind of like she
- 7:50didn't want me to like the you know sit
- 7:52down or like hurt the baby or anything.
- 7:55>> Did she accuse you of cheating at that
- 7:57point?
- 7:58>> Mhm.
- 7:59>> So what she say?
- 8:00>> Like I knew there was somebody else or
- 8:02there was somebody else.
- 8:05And I just I I I didn't come out and say
- 8:08no
- 8:09that there is somebody else but she
- 8:11obviously already knew.
- 8:13>> And your response to that was what?
- 8:16Did you say no there's not?
- 8:18Did you deny it?
- 8:20>> I mean I just denied it but I mean at
- 8:22that point
- 8:26So that always cuz when she would accuse
- 8:28me at the beach it was all like there's
- 8:30nobody else called it nobody else you
- 8:32know or like you know and when we got
- 8:34back home
- 8:36>> She always like said there's got to be
- 8:37somebody else cuz she'd always talk to
- 8:39her friend like Christina or somebody
- 8:40else like Leslie.
- 8:43And they'd always say there's got to be
- 8:44somebody else if he's not willing to
- 8:46sleep with you like he's getting it from
- 8:48somewhere else.
- 8:50There is no
- 8:52there's no girl else for me.
- 8:54She couldn't really say I would get
- 8:55anywhere else cuz I was using those
- 8:57Android gift cards so it was kind of
- 8:58like that she
- 9:00just mean me getting distant.
- 9:02But she knew and I just it's it's mainly
- 9:05the reason why I talked to her cuz I
- 9:06knew like after that night it was just
- 9:08like it felt like I just felt guilty
- 9:10more guilty than ever before.
- 9:13>> Yeah.
- 9:15Um
- 9:16>> You're guilty cuz you got caught.
- 9:18>> And then
- 9:20it seems to me and I'm
- 9:22sorry a lot of thoughts here. So we know
- 9:25what happened and we can talk about it
- 9:26today kind of openly um and that's what
- 9:28we need from you is to just kind of say
- 9:31you know I know it sounds bad or I know
- 9:33this or I know I feel this way but
- 9:35physically just the fact of what
- 9:36happened. Um so if you could tell us
- 9:38that it seems then that it would have
- 9:40had to been a a pretty quick transition
- 9:42from two people talking to this.
- 9:45>> Yeah. Right. Is that what happened?
- 9:46>> Yeah. It was like I don't want to like
- 9:49I'm thinking of the last last things she
- 9:51was
- 9:52we were talking about but it was you
- 9:54know like I love you love you anymore
- 9:57and then she was like you're never going
- 9:58to see the kids.
- 9:59>> Oh, no, no.
- 10:00>> I don't think Shannan said that because
- 10:03why would that make sense if she said
- 10:05that would Chris murder them?
- 10:09Oh, you're going to take my kids away
- 10:10from me? Oh, I'm going to murder the I'm
- 10:12going to murder them anyways. What?
- 10:15That doesn't make sense.
- 10:18>> That's perfect. That's exactly what we
- 10:20need. Okay. And I know it's hard to walk
- 10:22through that again but that's exactly
- 10:23it.
- 10:24>> If you look at Chris's height if you
- 10:26look at a normal
- 10:28human height
- 10:29compared to this fence
- 10:31I thought that fence was a little higher
- 10:32but it's actually not.
- 10:34You could definitely hand somebody over
- 10:37that fence.
- 10:39Just saying.
- 10:40>> So then as soon as she started talking
- 10:43like that then it was
- 10:44>> Nobody works back there or lives back
- 10:46there.
- 10:46>> was you saying that you didn't love her?
- 10:48Is that right?
- 10:48>> Okay.
- 10:49>> And her saying you're never going to see
- 10:50the kids.
- 10:51>> Yeah.
- 10:51>> Okay.
- 10:52>> Makes sense.
- 10:52>> I can imagine how that made you feel.
- 10:54Sorry. But then didn't warrant what I
- 10:55did. Yeah.
- 10:57Um
- 10:58and then the fact that she didn't
- 11:02scratch at you or anything is that she
- 11:04because it was so helpful?
- 11:06>> I don't think it I mean I didn't feel
- 11:08like
- 11:09I'm not going to put my full my answer
- 11:11on anybody of course. I don't even know
- 11:12what kind of force I would put in on her
- 11:15neck. I don't know but good.
- 11:18I could have done it in four minutes. I
- 11:19don't know if that would have too but
- 11:21>> Did you cover her face at all?
- 11:23>> He's even said he's watched Criminal
- 11:25Minds.
- 11:26>> Both hands on her neck at that time?
- 11:28>> Both hands on her neck.
- 11:29>> Okay.
- 11:30>> And so if it's done right I mean that
- 11:33can be a matter of seconds before
- 11:34someone on their carotid loses oxygen to
- 11:36their brain and sound, right? Did it
- 11:38seem like it was that quick or
- 11:40Okay, maybe a minute, maybe two.
- 11:42Okay.
- 11:42>> There's no way she did not fight then.
- 11:45>> Okay.
- 11:47All right.
- 11:48And did you see eyes go bloodshot or
- 11:51anything like that?
- 11:53>> They were.
- 11:54>> Okay.
- 11:55Okay. And then
- 11:56>> talking about the mascara. Did you see
- 11:57mascara on her face?
- 11:59>> It just looked like it was like
- 12:02That's why her did it to me.
- 12:04>> Is it Was she crying? Is that why?
- 12:07At what point did she start crying?
- 12:08>> When I
- 12:10I'm talking about a relationship about
- 12:11about being compatible.
- 12:14And we were just talking about there was
- 12:15somebody else. That's where
- 12:17she started crying.
- 12:19That's where I thought you know it was
- 12:21mascara. And I didn't know if it was it.
- 12:25>> I don't know.
- 12:25>> I don't I don't know.
- 12:27>> Okay.
- 12:27>> Was there a pillow or something you were
- 12:29going to ask him?
- 12:29>> Yes, sir. So, there was
- 12:31>> Was there ever a at any time a pillow or
- 12:34a sheet or anything involved in like
- 12:36that? On on the face specifically?
- 12:38>> No.
- 12:40No, like the sheet kind of
- 12:42wrapped around it.
- 12:43>> The pillowcase looked like it
- 12:45>> I put it
- 12:47>> The one that was at the site.
- 12:49>> Oh.
- 12:49>> And then the other sheets
- 12:52They were in the trash. At what point
- 12:53did you put those in there?
- 12:56>> I think that was
- 13:01>> Obviously after I was in the house.
- 13:02>> Yeah.
- 13:04I think it was probably the next day or
- 13:06so.
- 13:10>> I think it was in a lot of places.
- 13:12>> I'm not sure like what happened. This is
- 13:14hard to talk about like when
- 13:17strangle somebody out like sometime I
- 13:19guess they used the bathroom. And so it
- 13:21was like I think that's one of the main
- 13:23reasons why I couldn't stop it think it
- 13:25happened.
- 13:25>> sit there and talk about your wife like
- 13:27that.
- 13:28>> You said she was sleeping face down at
- 13:30one point.
- 13:32Was her face in the pillow or was it
- 13:33turned to the side or how did that
- 13:34>> Kind of like on the side. She was in the
- 13:36kind of like a side sleeper cuz she was
- 13:37more
- 13:39more down than usual.
- 13:40>> Okay.
- 13:41>> There is a version of this story that
- 13:42the world was given.
- 13:44A version that was sealed inside a
- 13:46guilty plea.
- 13:48Packaged inside a documentary. And then
- 13:51repeated so many times that most people
- 13:53stopped asking whether it was the
- 13:55complete picture.
- 13:56>> But it's not.
- 13:57>> Chris Watts killed his pregnant wife,
- 14:00Shanann.
- 14:01He killed his 4-year-old
- 14:03Bella.
- 14:04He killed his 3-year-old daughter,
- 14:06Celeste.
- 14:08He dumped their bodies at a remote oil
- 14:10field. He confessed. He pled guilty.
- 14:14He is now serving three consecutive life
- 14:16sentences inside Dodge Correctional
- 14:19Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin, where
- 14:22he will die.
- 14:24That part is not in question.
- 14:26That part is exactly right.
- 14:29But in 2026, a former cellmate named
- 14:32Dylan Tallman published a book.
- 14:35And inside that book, Chris Watts spoke
- 14:38for the first time.
- 14:39>> And then we're told, "Don't listen to
- 14:40him.
- 14:41He's lying." What? Like
- 14:44But you're not proving it though.
- 14:47>> About the one person who has never once
- 14:49sat in a courtroom, never once been
- 14:51cross-examined, never once been forced
- 14:54to answer on the record, under oath,
- 14:57for the full documented trail she left
- 14:59behind.
- 15:01Her name is Nichol Kessinger.
- 15:03And what Chris Watts told his cellmate,
- 15:06when placed directly against evidence
- 15:08that has been sitting in the official
- 15:10discovery file
- 15:11>> And they tell us, "Oh, don't listen to
- 15:12it."
- 15:12>> all since 2018,
- 15:14assembles a picture that no documentary,
- 15:17no podcast, and no investigation has
- 15:21ever fully confronted in one place
- 15:24until right now.
- 15:26My name is Dave.
- 15:28>> Hi Dave.
- 15:29>> This is Secret in the Dark
- 15:31and I need you to stay with me for every
- 15:33single minute of what comes next.
- 15:35>> Listening.
- 15:36>> Because by the time this video ends, you
- 15:38are not going to be asking whether Chris
- 15:41Watts belongs in prison.
- 15:43You are going to be asking
- 15:45>> Why isn't somebody else accompanying
- 15:46him?
- 15:47>> Who else was in that plan?
- 15:49Before we go anywhere, I have to be
- 15:52completely transparent about how I treat
- 15:54Dylan Tallman as a source.
- 15:57>> And if he was looking for places in
- 15:59Aspen,
- 16:00wouldn't Nicole Kessinger need to
- 16:03know in advance to go on a trip?
- 16:06I mean, I I don't
- 16:08There's going to be something in the
- 16:09comments that are going to be like,
- 16:10"Zwoiky, I do." But not many people just
- 16:12like abruptly, "Hey, let's go here."
- 16:16I mean, there are some, don't get me
- 16:17wrong.
- 16:18But this guy was just like
- 16:22"Oh, LET'S GO TO ASPEN." AND SHE didn't
- 16:24know about it.
- 16:28>> Because transparency is the only thing
- 16:30that separates this channel from noise.
- 16:33Dylan Tallman is a self-admitted career
- 16:36criminal.
- 16:38The book he published, The Cell Next
- 16:40Door, originates from conversations he
- 16:42claims to have had with Chris Watts
- 16:45during the 7 months they were housed in
- 16:47adjacent cells at Dodge Correctional.
- 16:50Chris Watts is not a reliable narrator
- 16:52of his own life.
- 16:54He is a man who, in verified prison
- 16:57letters reported by multiple outlets,
- 16:59compared his life sentence to the
- 17:01crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
- 17:04>> Shocker.
- 17:05>> A man who has, in interview after
- 17:07interview, distributed blame to every
- 17:10woman in his orbit while consistently
- 17:13repositioning himself as someone who was
- 17:15led somewhere rather than someone who
- 17:18chose.
- 17:19Nothing Chris Watts says is taken at
- 17:22face value in this script.
- 17:24Not a single word. The only question
- 17:27that matters when evaluating Tollman's
- 17:29account is this.
- 17:31Does what he reports align with evidence
- 17:34that already existed in the public
- 17:36discovery
- 17:37>> A little test would let us know if he is
- 17:40being truthful
- 17:42or a liar.
- 17:43>> The record before his book was ever
- 17:46written.
- 17:47>> Because he's I bet he would take it
- 17:49because I he said he would take it.
- 17:51>> On several critical points, the answer
- 17:54is yes.
- 17:55That is what we are here to examine.
- 17:58Not Chris's word.
- 18:00Not Tollman's credibility.
- 18:02The overlap between what a man claims he
- 18:05was told in a prison cell
- 18:07and what a forensic record already
- 18:09confirmed before anyone had a reason to
- 18:11fabricate it. That is where this case
- 18:14lives.
- 18:15>> Nichol Kessinger
- 18:15>> That is where it has always lived.
- 18:17>> involved
- 18:18>> And that is where we are going. Nichol
- 18:20Kessinger worked as a contract
- 18:22environmental field coordinator for
- 18:24Anadarko Petroleum in Colorado.
- 18:27That is where she and Chris Watts met.
- 18:30At least, that is the timeline she gave
- 18:33investigators.
- 18:35She told law enforcement that their
- 18:36relationship began sometime in May or
- 18:39June of 2018.
- 18:42She told them she had no idea he was
- 18:44still in an intact marriage. She told
- 18:47them he presented himself as nearly
- 18:48divorced. She told them that when she
- 18:51learned he had children,
- 18:53she thought it was, in her words,
- 18:55kind of cute.
- 18:57She told them she had absolutely no idea
- 19:01that his wife, Shanann, was pregnant.
- 19:04Those four claims are the foundation of
- 19:07her entire account. Every interview she
- 19:10gave, every statement she made, every
- 19:13tear she shed for investigators, all of
- 19:16it rests on that foundation.
- 19:18Now, let us look at what her phone was
- 19:20actually doing while she was building
- 19:23that story.
- 19:25July 24th, 2018.
- 19:28>> Yeah, this is all fake, right?
- 19:29>> Weeks into the relationship she
- 19:31described as casual and innocent, Nichol
- 19:34Kessinger searched a specific phrase on
- 19:36Google.
- 19:37Man I'm having an affair with says he'll
- 19:40leave his wife.
- 19:42>> Oh.
- 19:42>> Not man I'm dating who is separated.
- 19:45>> Oh.
- 19:45>> Not man going through a divorce.
- 19:47>> Thank you.
- 19:48>> Not is my boyfriend still married.
- 19:51Affair.
- 19:52Her word.
- 19:53Her search.
- 19:55Her device.
- 19:56You do not use the word affair if you
- 19:59genuinely believe you are dating a man
- 20:01who is already separated from his wife.
- 20:04>> Derek, can you yell it so that the
- 20:05people in the back can hear that? That'd
- 20:07be great. Thank you.
- 20:09>> That word only comes from someone who
- 20:11knows with absolute clarity
- 20:14that what they are in is still very much
- 20:17intact on the other side.
- 20:19>> I'd drive.
- 20:20>> That was July 24th. August 4th, 2018.
- 20:24>> Oh.
- 20:24>> Chris Watts was on a family vacation in
- 20:26North Carolina. A trip Kessinger herself
- 20:29later told investigators she had
- 20:31encouraged.
- 20:33While he was there with Shannan and
- 20:35their daughters, Nichol Kessinger spent
- 20:37two consecutive hours at home browsing
- 20:40wedding dresses online.
- 20:42Two hours.
- 20:44Same afternoon.
- 20:46On that same August 4th, she also
- 20:48accessed both Chris and Shannan Watts's
- 20:51Facebook profiles.
- 20:53>> And that's not the first time she's done
- 20:55that.
- 20:55>> She could see Shannan's page. She could
- 20:58see the pregnancy announcement Shannan
- 21:00had posted publicly.
- 21:01A pregnancy that was weeks old by that
- 21:04point, visible to anyone who clicked.
- 21:07In all six of her interviews with law
- 21:09enforcement.
- 21:10>> And Shannan's Facebook was very public.
- 21:15>> Nichol Kessinger stated clearly,
- 21:18consistently, and emotionally that she
- 21:20had absolutely no idea Shannan was
- 21:23pregnant.
- 21:25She said discovering the pregnancy
- 21:27through news coverage was one of the
- 21:29most shocking moments of her life.
- 21:32She said that if she had known about the
- 21:34baby,
- 21:35she would never have been involved with
- 21:36Chris at all.
- 21:39She accessed Shannan's Facebook page on
- 21:41August 4th. The pregnancy had been
- 21:44publicly announced weeks before that
- 21:45visit. She told investigators she had no
- 21:48idea.
- 21:49>> It's all there. We're not making this
- 21:52up. We're just saying it over and over
- 21:54and over and people are like, "Oh my
- 21:55gosh, it's over."
- 21:57Are you Look, are you listening to it?
- 22:03>> August 8th, 2018.
- 22:07Chris still in North Carolina.
- 22:09Shannan still with the girls on that
- 22:11family trip.
- 22:12Kessinger searched another phrase,
- 22:15"marrying your mistress."
- 22:17Mistress.
- 22:18Again, her language, her search, her
- 22:21phone.
- 22:22>> It's not that serious.
- 22:24Wedding dresses. People are like, "Oh,
- 22:26people Google dresses all the time, just
- 22:29randomly." She literally says, "marrying
- 22:31your mistress."
- 22:35M-
- 22:36Like, how slow do I got to do this?
- 22:38M- marrying
- 22:41mistress.
- 22:44>> She knew exactly what she was.
- 22:46Now, hold all three of those searches in
- 22:48your mind simultaneously.
- 22:51Because what comes next removes the last
- 22:55plausible layer of the story she
- 22:57>> And you think she's not involved.
- 23:00>> built for investigators. Nichol
- 23:02Kessinger told investigators her
- 23:04relationship with Chris Watts didn't
- 23:07begin until May or June of 2018.
- 23:11>> Mhm.
- 23:11>> That is when she claims to have met him.
- 23:14That is the foundation of her entire
- 23:17timeline.
- 23:19Forensic analysis of her phone showed
- 23:22she was searching Shannan Watts by name.
- 23:24>> A year before.
- 23:26>> As early as January 2018.
- 23:29>> Uh we have have have or we have
- 23:33What is it? What did it say? September?
- 23:35Yeah, September that she start Googling
- 23:38and then in January
- 23:40>> Five months before she claims to have
- 23:43met Chris.
- 23:44Before she claims to have known Shannan
- 23:47existed. This is not a rumor.
- 23:50This is not online speculation. This is
- 23:53not Reddit.
- 23:54>> For those people that do crime and stuff
- 23:56like that, is this is how serious this
- 23:58is or is this like
- 24:01I just see somebody in a a cubicle.
- 24:07It is not what it looks like.
- 24:09>> This is a data point confirmed directly
- 24:13and on the record by Michael Rourke, the
- 24:15Weld County District Attorney who
- 24:17prosecuted Chris Watts. When pressed by
- 24:20reporters
- 24:21Rourke confirmed it came directly from
- 24:24the phone.
- 24:25He confirmed it was not a reporting
- 24:26error.
- 24:27And when asked why that anomaly was
- 24:29never independently investigated, he
- 24:32said this.
- 24:33Because Chris Watts pleaded guilty, the
- 24:37>> That is not a good ex-
- 24:39uh answer.
- 24:40>> Investigation didn't continue to that
- 24:43point. Stop there.
- 24:45The District Attorney of Weld County
- 24:47confirmed on the record that a key
- 24:50witness in a quadruple homicide had been
- 24:52searching for the victim's name five
- 24:55months before she claims to have known
- 24:57the victim existed.
- 24:58>> And doesn't warrant
- 25:01any luck.
- 25:02Nothing.
- 25:04>> And the official response was
- 25:06we didn't pursue it because we already
- 25:08had a conviction.
- 25:11That is what is on the record.
- 25:13That anomaly has sat in exactly the same
- 25:15place since 2018.
- 25:17>> 8 years.
- 25:18>> Unresolved, unexplained,
- 25:21officially acknowledged and officially
- 25:23abandoned.
- 25:24If she was searching Shannan Watts's
- 25:26name in January 2018, the question is
- 25:29not whether she knew who Shannan was
- 25:31before June.
- 25:33The question is how and why.
- 25:36This is where Dylan Tallman
- 25:38>> to be number one.
- 25:39>> account becomes relevant.
- 25:41And this is where I have to be
- 25:43meticulous about what we can verify and
- 25:45what we cannot.
- 25:47Tallman writes that during
- 25:49>> We can verify quite a bit, but they
- 25:51don't want to verify anything else.
- 25:53>> During one of their prison
- 25:55conversations, Chris Watts described the
- 25:58night of August 12th, 2018,
- 26:01the night before the murders.
- 26:03He described a phone call that lasted
- 26:06111 minutes.
- 26:08According to Tallman, Watts told him
- 26:11that during that call, Kessinger gave
- 26:13him an ultimatum,
- 26:15that she told him directly,
- 26:17"It is your family or me."
- 26:20We cannot verify that conversation took
- 26:22place.
- 26:23We have Tallman's account filtered
- 26:25through Chris Watts,
- 26:27>> They both don't remember Jack
- 26:30crap.
- 26:31>> a man whose self-interest in
- 26:33redistributing blame is well
- 26:35established.
- 26:36But here is what we absolutely can
- 26:38verify using only the official discovery
- 26:41record,
- 26:42evidence that existed long before
- 26:44Tallman wrote a single word.
- 26:47The August 12th phone call is in the
- 26:49records.
- 26:51>> This guy is just checking his email. He
- 26:52ain't being all serious.
- 26:53>> 111 minutes, documented, confirmed,
- 26:58time-stamped.
- 27:00What was said during that 111 minutes
- 27:03has never been officially determined
- 27:06because the messages Kessinger sent and
- 27:08received around that call were deleted
- 27:11before investigators could fully recover
- 27:14them.
- 27:15The call exists, the duration exists,
- 27:18the deletion
- 27:19>> And they tell remember nothing.
- 27:21>> exists.
- 27:23What sits between those three confirmed
- 27:25facts is exactly what Tollman claims
- 27:27Watts described to him.
- 27:30Does that confirm the ultimatum?
- 27:32No.
- 27:33But it means Tollman didn't invent the
- 27:35phone call.
- 27:36The phone call was real.
- 27:38What he claims it contained is the part
- 27:41that cannot be independently verified.
- 27:45>> You can use a lie detector for our
- 27:47baseline just to kind of see, you know.
- 27:49>> That distinction matters.
- 27:51We hold it.
- 27:53Nichol Kessinger drove the same commute
- 27:55to Anadarko Petroleum every single day.
- 27:59Investigators subpoenaed him
- 28:00>> Besides one day.
- 28:02>> months of her phone records. Her cell
- 28:04tower data mapped that commute with
- 28:06complete consistency. Same roads, same
- 28:10towers, morning after morning.
- 28:13A uniform, predictable, established
- 28:16pattern
- 28:17until August 13th, 2018.
- 28:20At 6:16 a.m. on the morning the Watts
- 28:23family was murdered, Kessinger's phone
- 28:25pinged a cell tower it had never
- 28:28pinged in all those months of prior
- 28:30records.
- 28:32That tower placed her device in the
- 28:33proximity of one specific location,
- 28:37>> I mean,
- 28:38>> 2825
- 28:40Saratoga Trail, Frederick, Colorado,
- 28:43the Watts family home,
- 28:45the same address she had searched on
- 28:47Google less than 36 hours before.
- 28:50>> Yeah, Ronnie, are you [ __ ] kidding
- 28:52me?
- 28:53>> That ping.
- 28:54And her phone had never pinged that
- 28:56tower again.
- 28:57>> They're like, she's clear.
- 28:58>> any subsequent morning.
- 29:00Not once.
- 29:02Now hold the precise timing.
- 29:04Because this is where it matters most.
- 29:07Chris Watts had driven away from that
- 29:09house at approximately 5:45 a.m. that
- 29:13morning with Shannan's body and with
- 29:15Bella and Celeste alive in the back of
- 29:18his truck.
- 29:19By 6:16 a.m., his phone was already
- 29:23pinging towers along the highway heading
- 29:25northeast toward the Anadarko oil field
- 29:28site known as Survey 319.
- 29:31At 6:16 a.m., he was not at the house.
- 29:35He had been gone for 30 minutes.
- 29:37At 6:16 a.m., her phone pinged the tower
- 29:40near his house.
- 29:41>> That's why
- 29:42>> And she placed a call not to Chris.
- 29:45To a man named Jim.
- 29:47Jim is not a peripheral figure.
- 29:50>> Don't talk to me.
- 29:51>> Discovery records and subsequent
- 29:53investigative interviews confirmed that
- 29:55Jim was embedded in the social world
- 29:57shared by both Chris and Nicole.
- 30:00There are photographs of all three of
- 30:01them together at the Colorado sand
- 30:04dunes. A location Chris and Kessinger
- 30:07visited during their relationship. When
- 30:10Detective Koback later asked Kessinger
- 30:12whether Jim could serve as her alibi
- 30:14witness,
- 30:15>> Don't talk to me.
- 30:15>> whether he could confirm her location on
- 30:17the morning of August 13th,
- 30:20she resisted naming him.
- 30:22She said it would not be fair to drag
- 30:24him into it.
- 30:24>> Believe him.
- 30:25>> Her alibi witness
- 30:27on the morning four people were
- 30:29murdered.
- 30:30>> That's why
- 30:30>> would not be fair to name him.
- 30:33Detective Koback did not press her.
- 30:36He moved on.
- 30:37>> Shut up.
- 30:37>> The question of where Nicole Kessinger
- 30:39was between 5:45 a.m. and the time she
- 30:43>> is still unknown.
- 30:44>> clocked in at Anadarko on the morning of
- 30:47August 13th was never formally answered
- 30:50in any interview.
- 30:52It was never independently
- 30:54>> She clocked in at 2:00.
- 30:58Oh, excuse me. Clocked out at 3:00.
- 31:01During that time she called her sex
- 31:03therapist twice.
- 31:04It's in the discovery.
- 31:06>> verified.
- 31:08Anadarko's security cameras covered
- 31:10their parking lot. Footage that could
- 31:12have established exactly when she
- 31:14arrived that morning existed.
- 31:17>> No publicly verified timestamp from that
- 31:20footage was ever produced. In her first
- 31:23interview, Kessinger mentioned when she
- 31:25clocked out. She never mentioned when
- 31:27she clocked in. No investigator ever
- 31:30asked. Survey 319 is the Anadarko oil
- 31:34well site where Chris Watts drove on the
- 31:37morning of August 13th.
- 31:40It is where he buried Shannan in a
- 31:42shallow grave.
- 31:43It is where Bella and Celeste's body
- 31:46>> I don't think he did it by himself.
- 31:48No. With that that hole, no.
- 31:51>> were found inside crude oil storage
- 31:54tanks.
- 31:56It is the crime scene.
- 31:58In her very first interview with
- 31:59investigators, Nichol Kessinger told
- 32:02them that Chris going to the oil field
- 32:04that morning was routine.
- 32:06Normal field operations. Nothing
- 32:09unusual.
- 32:10Six days later, after investigators
- 32:13received her phone records, her account
- 32:16>> You would start digging a hole with a
- 32:18body outside knowing that technically
- 32:21anybody could come by any moment and you
- 32:24dug that whole thinking you were going
- 32:26to be able to get it done.
- 32:28I wouldn't even been able to start. I'd
- 32:29be like, I'm going to get caught while
- 32:31doing this. I'm an idiot.
- 32:34>> changed completely.
- 32:36Suddenly, she remembered an extensive
- 32:39conversation with Chris the night before
- 32:41the murders in which she questioned him
- 32:44specifically about why he was planning
- 32:46to go to Survey 319 first thing Monday
- 32:50morning.
- 32:51Her documented words to investigators
- 32:53were,
- 32:54"That's not your job. Why would you have
- 32:56to go check the release? You're not part
- 32:59of the environmental team."
- 33:01She knew that site.
- 33:03She knew his role.
- 33:05She knew it was not a normal assignment
- 33:07for him.
- 33:08>> Why would she ask
- 33:11him to send a picture?
- 33:14I just think it's That was staged for a
- 33:16reason.
- 33:18What do you think that part is? The
- 33:19whole um her asking
- 33:22for him to take a picture and send it to
- 33:24her
- 33:25um that there was a leak. I think it's
- 33:28because she was safety.
- 33:30And they're trying to figure or show a
- 33:31reason why he would be out there.
- 33:34Because I think again, my opinion, that
- 33:37he put them out there because in
- 33:39September this place was supposed to be
- 33:41leveled, shut off, and done pumping.
- 33:45But it was postponed till December.
- 33:48They were planning on having that
- 33:50Bella, Celeste, Shannan, and Nico all
- 33:54there because once the crew came in and
- 33:56took everything out,
- 33:58and destroyed it, and leveled it,
- 34:01no one would ever have gone back out
- 34:02there.
- 34:03It would have been a complete desert
- 34:05like it is now.
- 34:07Or deserted area.
- 34:11I wholeheartedly believe that's why
- 34:14they chose this area.
- 34:15But they wanted to show from Nicole and
- 34:18Chris's side, "Oh, this is why Chris
- 34:21went out there."
- 34:23That's the only reason why I can think
- 34:24of.
- 34:25>> And then she disclosed something that
- 34:27just never received the attention it
- 34:29deserves.
- 34:30>> it deserves better.
- 34:31>> On the evening of August 13th, hours
- 34:34after Chris had been at Survey 319,
- 34:37hours after Shannan, Bella, and Celeste
- 34:40had already been placed there,
- 34:42she texted him and asked him to send her
- 34:45a photograph.
- 34:47A photograph as proof that he had been
- 34:49at Survey 319 that day.
- 34:52She asked for evidence of his presence
- 34:54at the crime scene on the day the crime
- 34:56was committed.
- 34:58Now, consider what the full discovery
- 35:00>> Well, this is why Nicole asked or this
- 35:02is why Chris rece- or
- 35:04or Chris sent it
- 35:06to her
- 35:08but showed them that they are both
- 35:09innocent.
- 35:10>> record shows about their months of
- 35:12communication,
- 35:14hundreds of texts, daily calls, messages
- 35:17reviewed in forensic detail by
- 35:19investigators.
- 35:21There is not a single other instance,
- 35:23not one, of Nicole Kessinger asking
- 35:26Chris Watts to photograph his work
- 35:28location on any other day.
- 35:31Not once across months of records,
- 35:34except on the morning he drove his
- 35:36family to that oil field.
- 35:38>> That coincidence
- 35:38>> When the investigator who had this
- 35:40information in front of him reached this
- 35:42moment in the interview,
- 35:44he did not ask why.
- 35:46He did not ask what prompted a request
- 35:48she had never made before on the
- 35:50specific day she had never made it
- 35:52before at the specific location she
- 35:54could not have known would become a
- 35:56crime scene
- 35:57unless she already knew it would.
- 36:00He moved on. A witness in a quadruple
- 36:02homicide tells investigators she
- 36:04requested photographic proof of the
- 36:07primary suspect's location at what would
- 36:10be confirmed as the crime scene on the
- 36:12day the crime was committed.
- 36:15And the investigator moved on.
- 36:17The night of August 13th into the
- 36:20>> So many moves on
- 36:22parts where they could have continued to
- 36:24investigate.
- 36:25>> early hours of August 14th, between 9:48
- 36:29p.m. and 2:18 a.m.
- 36:32Phone records show Nichol Kessinger and
- 36:35Chris Watts in multiple calls totaling
- 36:39156
- 36:40minutes,
- 36:412 hours and 36 minutes of conversation.
- 36:45While Shannan, Bella, Celeste, and
- 36:47unborn Nico had already been at Survey
- 36:50319 for more than 12 hours.
- 36:55When detective Koback walked Kessinger
- 36:57through those calls, reading timestamps,
- 37:00reading durations, asking what was
- 37:02discussed, her memory fractured.
- 37:05This was notable
- 37:07and this matters to examine carefully.
- 37:10Because in those same interview
- 37:12sessions, Kessinger provided detailed,
- 37:15specific, chronologically precise
- 37:18accounts of events from weeks earlier in
- 37:20the relationship.
- 37:22Specific restaurants, specific dates,
- 37:25specific conversations she recalled with
- 37:28fluency and confidence.
- 37:31Her memory for June and July was sharp.
- 37:34Her memory for the single most important
- 37:36night in the entire case was, in her own
- 37:40words, fragmented.
- 37:42What she did say about that night is
- 37:45more revealing than what she claimed she
- 37:47could not remember.
- 37:49When Koback pressed her on why she could
- 37:52not sleep, why the calls kept happening
- 37:54into the early hours of August 14th.
- 38:00Why she was distressed, she said this.
- 38:03All those phone calls at the very When
- 38:06she was texting Chris's phone once, she
- 38:08was like, Chris, is this you?
- 38:10She wanted to know if the police had her
- 38:12or had his phone. End of the night.
- 38:16That was me freaking out. I can't sleep.
- 38:19I'm really scared. Where's your family?
- 38:21That was me freaking out and him calling
- 38:24to try to assure me. Just making sure
- 38:27everything was okay. I'm really scared.
- 38:30Where's your family?
- 38:31>> I can't go to prison. I won't I won't
- 38:34survive.
- 38:34>> In her official account, Kessinger told
- 38:37investigators she assumed Shannan had
- 38:39simply gone to a friend's house after an
- 38:42argument. Couple's fight.
- 38:45She needed space.
- 38:46She would come back. That was the
- 38:49explanation she gave for why she was not
- 38:51alarmed. But if you genuinely believe a
- 38:54woman has gone to cool off at a friend's
- 38:56house,
- 38:57there is nothing to be scared of.
- 39:00There is no reason to lose sleep.
- 39:02>> Right.
- 39:02>> There is no reason to need reassurance
- 39:05at 2:00 in the morning that everything
- 39:07is okay.
- 39:08>> This This channel does make a point.
- 39:11>> You are only scared at 2:00 in the
- 39:13morning if you already know or strongly
- 39:15suspect
- 39:17that the situation is something entirely
- 39:19different
- 39:20>> There it is.
- 39:20>> needing space.
- 39:22And her own documented words confirm she
- 39:25was scared.
- 39:27At 1:51 a.m. on August 14th, Nichol
- 39:30Kessinger called Chris Watts.
- 39:33At 1:58 a.m., while they were still on
- 39:36that call, Chris began receiving
- 39:38incoming calls from the Frederick Police
- 39:40Department. They had already been
- 39:42contacted by Shannan's friends and
- 39:44family.
- 39:45>> He was never asked about that.
- 39:48>> Officers were beginning to ask questions
- 39:49about where the Watts family had gone.
- 39:52Chris and Nichol ended their call. Chris
- 39:55called the officer back at 2:05 a.m. on
- 39:57his work phone. Within seconds of that
- 40:00police call beginning, Nichol Kessinger
- 40:02called Chris's personal phone.
- 40:05Both calls running simultaneously.
- 40:08The investigating officer on the work
- 40:10phone, Nichol on the personal phone
- 40:13at 2:05 in the morning.
- 40:16While an officer was beginning to ask
- 40:18questions about a missing family.
- 40:20>> I don't remember.
- 40:22>> Investigators who reviewed this sequence
- 40:24noted what it implies.
- 40:26She was not calling to check in.
- 40:28She was not calling because she missed
- 40:30him.
- 40:31She was calling to listen
- 40:33to monitor in real time what the officer
- 40:36knew and what he did not.
- 40:38She has never been asked to explain why
- 40:41she called back at that
- 40:43>> But remember, we're just crazy.
- 40:45>> that exact moment.
- 40:47That call
- 40:48at 2:05 a.m. on August 14th was the last
- 40:53documented communication between Nichol
- 40:55Kessinger and Chris Watts.
- 40:59And within hours of ending it she had
- 41:01wiped her phone clean on August 14th
- 41:04>> But she had already
- 41:05>> before she had made any contact with
- 41:06investigators.
- 41:08Nichol Kessinger deleted virtually
- 41:10everything from her phone. All text
- 41:12messages. All photos. Her contact list.
- 41:16Her emails. Every connection to Chris
- 41:19Watts gone.
- 41:21She then instructed Chris to delete
- 41:22everything on his end.
- 41:24And she told her close friend Charlotte,
- 41:26who had received photographs of Chris
- 41:28and detailed conversations about him
- 41:30from Kessinger
- 41:32to wipe their entire thread as well.
- 41:35Deleting material evidence during an
- 41:37active homicide investigation has a
- 41:39legal name. Obstruction of justice.
- 41:43It was confirmed. It was documented
- 41:46inside the official discovery record.
- 41:49The following day, August 15th she
- 41:51called investigators.
- 41:54The sequence of that morning tells it
- 41:55>> This is part of damage control.
- 41:57>> its own story.
- 42:00At 5:00 a.m. a CBI agent Tammy Lee
- 42:04received a call from Anadarko Petroleum
- 42:06security manager Tony Musky.
- 42:09He informed investigators that a
- 42:11contracted employee had been exchanging
- 42:13messages with their primary suspect. He
- 42:16gave them two names, Chris Watts and
- 42:20Nichol Kessinger.
- 42:21Law enforcement already knew who she was
- 42:24before she made contact. Approximately 2
- 42:27hours later, at 9:50 a.m.,
- 42:31Kessinger called investigators.
- 42:33She was not being courageous. She was
- 42:36not being transparent.
- 42:38She was getting ahead of something she
- 42:40could already feel closing in.
- 42:43And here is what removes any remaining
- 42:45argument about that.
- 42:48On the same day she supposedly reached
- 42:50out to cooperate with an active murder
- 42:52investigation, her phone records show
- 42:55her searching,
- 42:57"Can cops trace text messages?
- 43:00How long do phone companies keep text
- 43:02messages?
- 43:03What is the difference between text
- 43:05message content and text message
- 43:08detail?"
- 43:09And then she deleted those searches.
- 43:11A woman cooperating fully and honestly
- 43:14does not spend her cooperation day
- 43:17researching the boundaries of what law
- 43:20enforcement can and cannot find.
- 43:23That is the behavior of someone
- 43:24calculating what they can survive.
- 43:27When Detective Koback later raised the
- 43:29phone deletions with her directly,
- 43:31Kessinger's explanation was that she was
- 43:34grossed out by Chris.
- 43:37That she simply did not want his name on
- 43:39her phone anymore.
- 43:42That answer was accepted.
- 43:44The conversation moved on.
- 43:47Here is where Tollman's account and the
- 43:49official discovery record produce
- 43:51something that cannot be dismissed.
- 43:55Tollman writes that in their prison
- 43:57conversations, Watts described believing
- 44:00at the time of the murders
- 44:02that Kessinger had a plan.
- 44:04That there there a next chapter already
- 44:07arranged.
- 44:08That he was not improvising alone on the
- 44:10morning of August 13th.
- 44:13He was executing a conclusion to a plan.
- 44:16Again,
- 44:17Chris's word filtered through Tollman.
- 44:21We hold that with the appropriate
- 44:22skepticism.
- 44:24But here is what the discovery record
- 44:26shows.
- 44:27Completely independent of anything
- 44:29Tollman published.
- 44:32At 10:33 a.m. on August 13th, 9 minutes
- 44:36after Chris hung up with Shannan's
- 44:38mother, Zandra Rucheck, having fed her
- 44:41the story that Shannan had simply gone
- 44:43to a friend's house, Chris Watts opened
- 44:46Google and searched for hotels in Aspen,
- 44:48Colorado.
- 44:509 minutes after manufacturing a cover
- 44:52story for his grieving
- 44:53>> He thought he was in the clear.
- 44:56>> mother-in-law.
- 44:589 minutes after four people had been at
- 45:00Survey 319 for more than four hours,
- 45:04he searched Aspen resort hotels, and
- 45:07then he called a mountain resort
- 45:08directly.
- 45:10A man operating in a pure panic who
- 45:13committed an impulsive crime driven by a
- 45:15moment of rage, as he initially claimed,
- 45:19does not search Aspen resort hotels.
- 45:22He does not call mountain resorts.
- 45:25He does not browse destinations.
- 45:27>> family.
- 45:28>> You only do that if you believe your
- 45:30next chapter has already been arranged.
- 45:33>> That is a good point.
- 45:35What he just said. That's confirmation
- 45:37that he thought he was he was clear.
- 45:40>> If you believe someone is managing the
- 45:42other end of this.
- 45:43>> Yeah.
- 45:44>> If you are not improvising alone, but
- 45:46executing a conclusion to something that
- 45:48was already in motion.
- 45:51Dylan Tollman didn't create that hotel
- 45:53search. It was in the discovery file.
- 45:56Tollman arrived on top of a behavioral
- 45:58pattern that was already forensically
- 46:00documented.
- 46:01>> just going to verify
- 46:02>> the question it generates, who did he
- 46:04believe was waiting for him on the other
- 46:06side of that trip, has never been
- 46:08formally answered.
- 46:11The toxicology report conducted on
- 46:13Shannan Watts confirmed the presence of
- 46:15oxycodone in her system.
- 46:17Chris Watts didn't have a prescription
- 46:20for oxycodone.
- 46:21>> No, they didn't.
- 46:22>> Shannan Watts didn't have a prescription
- 46:24for oxycodone.
- 46:26In his confessions, Watts acknowledged
- 46:29the oxycodone. He acknowledged it was in
- 46:31her system.
- 46:33He has refused, consistently and
- 46:35completely, to name the source.
- 46:39>> But yet, he's
- 46:41he's with God.
- 46:43Again,
- 46:44I don't want to say that cuz it's
- 46:46judging him. I I got to stop saying
- 46:48that.
- 46:49>> In one prison communication reviewed by
- 46:52investigators, he stated that the origin
- 46:55of the oxycodone is a secret he will
- 46:58take to his grave.
- 47:00A secret he will take to his grave.
- 47:03>> Hazy.
- 47:04>> That is a deliberate choice of language.
- 47:07That is not the phrasing of a man who
- 47:09simply does not remember.
- 47:11That is the phrasing of a man protecting
- 47:13someone.
- 47:15In 8 years of reporting,
- 47:17>> Yep.
- 47:18>> across every documentary and every
- 47:20podcast that has covered this case, the
- 47:22source of the oxycodone found in a
- 47:24murder victim's system has never been
- 47:27officially identified.
- 47:28>> And how can you say that the it's
- 47:31the case is closed.
- 47:34Cases can be op- or reopened if the
- 47:37evidence was not properly done right.
- 47:40And the evidence in this has been not
- 47:42done right.
- 47:43>> No investigation has ever formally
- 47:46answered it.
- 47:47And the one person who knows has told
- 47:49the world, in writing, that he will not
- 47:52say.
- 47:53That question sits exactly where it has
- 47:55always sat. Open, unanswered,
- 47:59and officially abandoned.
- 48:01On October 30th, 2018, Detective Michael
- 48:05Prill submitted his forensic data report
- 48:07to the Weld County District Attorney's
- 48:09Office.
- 48:10It was unlike anything else in the
- 48:13entire discovery file.
- 48:16For the first time, someone inside law
- 48:18enforcement was writing in a way that
- 48:21made clear they were no longer simply
- 48:23processing Kessinger as a cooperative
- 48:25witness.
- 48:27Prill documented her search history in
- 48:29specific detail.
- 48:31He flagged her deletion of critical
- 48:33evidence.
- 48:34He noted that Chris Watts was
- 48:35communicating with Kessinger through
- 48:37channels beyond what had been examined,
- 48:40including a hidden calculator
- 48:42application through which photographs
- 48:44were arriving entirely outside any
- 48:47standard
- 48:48>> Skype
- 48:49>> text thread.
- 48:50An application that required a separate
- 48:53investigation to trace.
- 48:55An investigation that never happened.
- 48:58He documented Skype usage between Watts
- 49:01and Kessinger.
- 49:02A platform that carries entirely
- 49:04separate message records from a standard
- 49:06phone, requiring a separate legal
- 49:09request to obtain. Those records were
- 49:11never requested. He documented Chris's
- 49:14confirmed use of Snapchat, a platform
- 49:17whose fundamental design auto-deletes
- 49:20messages.
- 49:22Those records were never subpoenaed.
- 49:24And then he used a word, his word, in an
- 49:27official government document to describe
- 49:30Kessinger's voicemails and her general
- 49:32affect across the evidence he reviewed.
- 49:35Creepy.
- 49:36That is the word a forensic detective
- 49:38used inside an official law enforcement
- 49:40report to describe the woman his own
- 49:43department had classified
- 49:45forensic report in his hands.
- 49:47On November 6th, 2018, exactly 1 week
- 49:52after that report was issued,
- 49:54Chris Watts accepted a guilty plea.
- 49:57>> They never got a trial.
- 49:58>> No witness testimony under oath.
- 50:02No Nickole Kessinger sitting on a stand
- 50:05being cross-examined by a defense
- 50:07attorney who had read every single word
- 50:09of that forensic file.
- 50:11The case closed. Whether Chris Watts
- 50:14accepted that plea purely to avoid the
- 50:16death penalty
- 50:17>> There's more.
- 50:18>> or whether he understood that a trial
- 50:20would force questions into a courtroom
- 50:22that certain people needed to keep out
- 50:24of is something only he can answer.
- 50:28>> Excuse me.
- 50:28>> But one week between that forensic
- 50:30report and that guilty plea is not a
- 50:32coincidence.
- 50:34That sequence explains itself. Let me
- 50:37lay this out with precision.
- 50:39This is not a list of theories.
- 50:42This is the documented record of what
- 50:43the official investigation confirmed
- 50:46and then did not pursue.
- 50:49Gap one.
- 50:50>> And they call that justice.
- 50:53>> Her phone pinged a cell tower near the
- 50:56Watts family home at 6:16 a.m. on the
- 50:59morning of August 13th.
- 51:01>> Checking his emails again.
- 51:02>> 13th. A tower her phone had never pinged
- 51:05in months of prior records and never
- 51:08pinged again afterward.
- 51:10No investigator formally asked her to
- 51:12account for this location. No official
- 51:15explanation was ever produced.
- 51:18Gap two.
- 51:20Less than 36 hours before that ping, she
- 51:23had searched the Watts family home
- 51:25address online.
- 51:27That search is in the discovery record.
- 51:29It was never raised as a point of direct
- 51:31confrontation in any of her six
- 51:34interviews.
- 51:35Gap three.
- 51:37>> They ask better questions in the
- 51:39babysitter interview.
- 51:40>> She requested photographic proof of
- 51:42Chris's presence at Survey 319, the
- 51:45crime scene, on the day of the murders.
- 51:49In months of prior records, she had
- 51:51never once asked him to photograph his
- 51:53work location on any other day.
- 51:56The investigator who had this
- 51:57information didn't follow up.
- 52:01Gap four.
- 52:03She spent 156 minutes on the phone with
- 52:06Chris on the night of the murders, calls
- 52:09she could not
- 52:10>> She doesn't remember any of them.
- 52:12>> coherently account for.
- 52:14She offered to come in and manually
- 52:16reorganize her messages to fill those
- 52:18gaps.
- 52:19She never returned. No investigator
- 52:22followed up.
- 52:24Gap five.
- 52:26She called Chris's personal phone the
- 52:28moment a police call connected on his
- 52:31work phone at 2:05 in the morning.
- 52:33No investigator ever formally asked her
- 52:35to explain the timing of that specific
- 52:37call.
- 52:39Gap six.
- 52:40She deleted the entire contents of her
- 52:42phone before surrendering it to
- 52:45investigators.
- 52:46The forensic report issued by Detective
- 52:48Prill confirmed in writing that the
- 52:51technology at the Northern Colorado
- 52:53Forensic Laboratory did not allow for
- 52:56complete data extraction from Apple
- 52:58devices.
- 53:00>> 100%
- 53:01>> Possibly thousands of messages were
- 53:03never recovered. The limitation was
- 53:05documented. The investigation was
- 53:08declared complete anyway.
- 53:10Gap seven.
- 53:12She casually referenced using Skype with
- 53:14Chris during one interview.
- 53:16A platform carrying entirely separate
- 53:18message records requiring a separate
- 53:21legal request.
- 53:23Skype records were never requested. Gap
- 53:26eight.
- 53:27Chris Watts's confirmed use of Snapchat,
- 53:30a platform that auto deletes messages by
- 53:32design, was documented in the discovery
- 53:34file. Snapchat records were never
- 53:37subpoenaed. Gap nine.
- 53:40She searched Shanann Watts by
- 53:42as early as January 2018.
- 53:45>> Even sooner.
- 53:45>> Five months before she claims to have
- 53:47met Chris.
- 53:48Confirmed on the record by DA Michael
- 53:51Rourke. Never independently investigated
- 53:54because the conviction
- 53:55>> He even says that she's hampering.
- 53:58When they do the
- 54:00the thing with the news broadcasters and
- 54:02so forth, uh
- 54:04uh
- 54:07press something Oh my gosh, I'm having a
- 54:09blank.
- 54:12Oh, you guys are going to tell me in the
- 54:13comments. Um
- 54:15When he even said that, yeah, she did
- 54:17hamper. But we didn't feel that she
- 54:19needed to be looked at.
- 54:21What?
- 54:22>> was already secured.
- 54:24Gap 10.
- 54:26The source of the oxycodone, confirmed
- 54:29present in Shannan Watts's system by
- 54:32toxicology report, remains officially
- 54:35unknown.
- 54:35>> Can't be verified.
- 54:36>> Chris Watts has stated it is a secret he
- 54:39will take to his grave.
- 54:41No official investigation has ever
- 54:43formally answered the question.
- 54:46Those are 10 documented, confirmed,
- 54:49publicly verifiable gaps in an
- 54:51investigation that was officially
- 54:53declared complete.
- 54:54Any one of them individually might be
- 54:56rationalized. Bureaucratic limitation.
- 55:00Prosecutorial priority.
- 55:02The pressure of a timeline.
- 55:04All 10 in sequence, aligned with the
- 55:07documented timeline of a quadruple
- 55:09homicide, cannot.
- 55:11Before we reach the final section, this
- 55:14case requires a moment it consistently
- 55:17does not get.
- 55:19Chris Watts was identified within hours.
- 55:22Not because of sophisticated
- 55:24surveillance technology. Not because of
- 55:26forensic procedure alone.
- 55:28>> Cuz he was an idiot.
- 55:29>> But because the women who loved Shannan
- 55:31refused to accept
- 55:32>> That, too.
- 55:33>> what they were being told. Nicole
- 55:36Atkinson had been with Shannan in
- 55:38Arizona on a work trip that entire
- 55:40weekend.
- 55:42She had watched her friend navigate the
- 55:44quiet fracture of her marriage. She had
- 55:46driven Shannan home from the airport at
- 55:48nearly 2:00 in the morning on August
- 55:5113th and stood at the door until she was
- 55:54safely inside.
- 55:56When 9:00 a.m. arrived and Shannan
- 55:59missed her prenatal appointment, Nicole
- 56:01did not send another text.
- 56:03>> Just think if Nicole Atkinson never
- 56:05would have gone into there to verify to
- 56:08be so persistent. It could have went on
- 56:10for weeks, maybe months.
- 56:12But then people are like, "Oh, NICOLE
- 56:14ATKINSON WAS INVOLVED." WHAT? LIKE, ARE
- 56:16YOU KIDDING ME?
- 56:18>> She drove to the doctor's office,
- 56:20confirmed Shannan was a no show, and
- 56:22went directly to 2825 Saratoga Trail.
- 56:26>> I think she did the right thing.
- 56:27>> looked through the garage window.
- 56:29He saw Shannan's car. He saw the girls'
- 56:31car seats still inside.
- 56:34Nicole called the police, and she did
- 56:36not move from that driveway until
- 56:38someone with a badge arrived.
- 56:41She is one of the primary reasons this
- 56:43case broke open in hours rather than
- 56:46days.
- 56:48>> Cassie, one of Shannan's closest
- 56:50friends, cut through every manipulation
- 56:53attempt Chris made in a single response.
- 56:56When he reached out and wrote that he
- 56:58really didn't want her to think he was a
- 57:01>> She's like, "I don't give a crap about
- 57:02you, Chris. I want to find Shannan and
- 57:05Celeste. I don't care about you."
- 57:08>> bad person, she replied with clarity
- 57:10that is still remarkable to read. "Right
- 57:13now, Chris, I don't care about you. I
- 57:16don't care about your relationship or
- 57:18what type of person you are or are not.
- 57:21>> Bring her up.
- 57:21>> Where is Shannan?"
- 57:23Everything else was noise.
- 57:25She had one question, and she held it.
- 57:28And Addy, the moment she got off a phone
- 57:31call with Chris that afternoon, sent a
- 57:33single message to the friend group that
- 57:35stands as one of the most precise things
- 57:38said by anyone in the first hours of
- 57:41this case.
- 57:43The police need to look at Chris's cell
- 57:44phone and his computer.
- 57:47One phone conversation was all she
- 57:48needed. She read exactly who she was
- 57:51dealing with and named the evidence that
- 57:53would break it open.
- 57:55She was right.
- 57:57These women compressed the timeline
- 57:59before anyone could finish covering
- 58:01their tracks. Their refusal to accept
- 58:03the
- 58:04>> But no, we don't need to look at it.
- 58:06>> explanations being handed to them is the
- 58:09reason evidence existed before more of
- 58:12it could disappear.
- 58:15They have never received the credit this
- 58:16case owes them. Shannan Watts was 34
- 58:20years old.
- 58:21She documented her life openly, her
- 58:24marriage, her daughters, her Thrive
- 58:26business, her hope.
- 58:28Because she believed in what she was
- 58:30building.
- 58:31She was not naive.
- 58:33She was not blind.
- 58:36She knew something was deeply wrong in
- 58:39her marriage in the weeks before August
- 58:4013th.
- 58:41>> And because she tried to go and say or
- 58:43save her marriage, she was a terrible
- 58:46spouse.
- 58:48>> She searched for marriage counselors.
- 58:50She ordered a book on rebuilding
- 58:52relationships.
- 58:54She wrote her husband a letter telling
- 58:56him she would fight for them.
- 58:58She did everything a person is supposed
- 59:01to do when the life they love is
- 59:02beginning to fracture.
- 59:05And none of it was enough.
- 59:07Because the fracture was not an
- 59:09accident.
- 59:10It was a plan.
- 59:12Bella was 4 years old.
- 59:14August 13th was supposed to be her first
- 59:17day of school.
- 59:18Celeste was 3.
- 59:20Nico never took a single breath outside
- 59:23of his mother.
- 59:24None of them had any say in any of it.
- 59:28The phone records are there. The
- 59:30forensic reports are there. The GPS
- 59:33coordinates are there. The interview
- 59:35transcripts are there. The search
- 59:37histories are there. The evidence does
- 59:39not become less true because it remains
- 59:41unacted upon.
- 59:43And it does not become less worth
- 59:45knowing.
- 59:46Chris Watts is 40 years old.
- 59:48>> It deserves the fight that it needs.
- 59:50>> old.
- 59:51He is inside Dodge Correctional
- 59:53Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin.
- 59:56He works as a custodian. He attends
- 59:59Bible study. He writes letters.
- 1:00:01He is serving three consecutive life
- 1:00:04sentences without
- 1:00:05>> Then you have the channels that are
- 1:00:07saying that he's getting out like
- 1:00:09and I'm spreading false propaganda.
- 1:00:11Okay, whatever.
- 1:00:13>> of parole.
- 1:00:14He will die inside that building.
- 1:00:17That part of justice is secured.
- 1:00:19And it is exactly right.
- 1:00:22Nichol Kessinger changed her name.
- 1:00:24She left Colorado.
- 1:00:26She gave one interview to the Denver
- 1:00:28Post in late 2018, described herself as
- 1:00:32a victim of Chris's manipulation,
- 1:00:35and has not spoken publicly since.
- 1:00:38She was never charged. Here, with
- 1:00:40absolute
- 1:00:41>> Unless somebody actually dives down this
- 1:00:43and actually looks at it,
- 1:00:45which as of right now
- 1:00:48No, but hopefully in 3 years, maybe.
- 1:00:51>> precision is what that means.
- 1:00:53>> There's a new DA.
- 1:00:54>> And what it does not mean.
- 1:00:56DaMichael Rock made a legal
- 1:00:58determination that the evidence, as it
- 1:01:00existed at that specific moment, did not
- 1:01:03meet the threshold required for
- 1:01:05prosecution.
- 1:01:07That is a legal calculation made at a
- 1:01:10specific point in time.
- 1:01:13It is not an acquittal.
- 1:01:15It is not a declaration of innocence.
- 1:01:18It is a prosecutorial decision made
- 1:01:20before 10 of the documented gaps I just
- 1:01:23described were ever formally pursued.
- 1:01:26In his own interview with Investigation
- 1:01:28Discovery, Rock described Kessinger's
- 1:01:31information as, in his words, a
- 1:01:34bombshell that helped build the case
- 1:01:37against Chris.
- 1:01:39He described Chris as appearing to have
- 1:01:41had every intention of starting a new
- 1:01:43life with her.
- 1:01:45That is not the language of a man who
- 1:01:47believed she had nothing to do with any
- 1:01:49of it. He said the evidence did not
- 1:01:51support charging her. He did not say she
- 1:01:54was innocent.
- 1:01:56Those are different statements.
- 1:01:58And the difference between them is
- 1:02:00exactly where the unanswered questions
- 1:02:02live.
- 1:02:03>> Amen.
- 1:02:04>> Dylan Tallman's book didn't create those
- 1:02:06questions. The phone records created
- 1:02:09them. The cell tower data created them.
- 1:02:12The search history created them.
- 1:02:14>> And it warrants a fresh pair of eyes.
- 1:02:16>> The forensic report filed by a detective
- 1:02:19who used the word creepy in an official
- 1:02:22government document created them.
- 1:02:25Tallman arrived on top of suspicion that
- 1:02:28was already fully documented and fully
- 1:02:30established.
- 1:02:32What he added was a voice, Chris's
- 1:02:34voice, filtered, self-serving, and
- 1:02:38unreliable, confirming the shape of a
- 1:02:40story the evidence was already telling.
- 1:02:43The shape of a
- 1:02:44>> He was just verifying it from what he
- 1:02:46heard in prison. And then he wants to
- 1:02:49exploit it, expose it. Oh, I'll tell you
- 1:02:53everything, which he pretty much did.
- 1:02:55And then when they say that they want to
- 1:02:57bring him in to verify it, oh, no,
- 1:02:59you're good.
- 1:03:01He can't be trusted. Like, what?
- 1:03:03>> plan
- 1:03:04>> What?
- 1:03:05>> The shape of an ultimatum.
- 1:03:07The shape of someone who believed a next
- 1:03:11chapter was already waiting.
- 1:03:13Whether that is the complete truth, a
- 1:03:16partial truth, or a man redistributing
- 1:03:19blame from a prison cell.
- 1:03:21The 10 gaps remain open.
- 1:03:24The Skype records were never requested.
- 1:03:27The Snapchat subpoena never happened.
- 1:03:30The alibi witness was never named.
- 1:03:32The January 2018 search for Shannan was
- 1:03:35never investigated.
- 1:03:37The source of the Oxycodone remains
- 1:03:39unknown.
- 1:03:41And the one morning her phone pinged a
- 1:03:43tower near the house where a family was
- 1:03:46about to be destroyed.
- 1:03:48That morning has never, in eight years,
- 1:03:51received a formal explanation.
- 1:03:53>> And it needs to.
- 1:03:54>> If you made it to the end of this, thank
- 1:03:56you.
- 1:03:57I mean that genuinely.
- 1:03:59I want to ask you two specific questions
- 1:04:01in the comments.
- 1:04:02I read everything.
- 1:04:04First, the cell tower ping at 6:16 a.m.
- 1:04:08placing Nichol Kessinger's phone near
- 1:04:10the Watts
- 1:04:12>> And there's been channels that I've
- 1:04:13watched that are like, "Oh, this is why
- 1:04:14it happened."
- 1:04:16You can't 100% say that. But you can't
- 1:04:18100% say that she was there. No. But you
- 1:04:21know how we'd figure that out? We
- 1:04:23investigate it.
- 1:04:25>> family home on the morning of the
- 1:04:27murders.
- 1:04:27>> And they won't do it.
- 1:04:29>> Is that the single detail that changes
- 1:04:31how you have understood this case for
- 1:04:34eight years?
- 1:04:35Second,
- 1:04:37the 10 documented gaps, the deleted
- 1:04:39evidence, the Aspen Hotel search, the
- 1:04:42Survey 319 photo
- 1:04:44>> there.
- 1:04:45>> request, the 2 hours and 36 minutes on
- 1:04:48the night of the murders,
- 1:04:49the January 2018 search for a woman she
- 1:04:53claims not to have known existed.
- 1:04:56Do you believe this investigation was
- 1:04:58complete?
- 1:05:00Tell me where you stand.
- 1:05:02>> I stand with the red flag
- 1:05:05saying that Nichol Kessinger was
- 1:05:07involved in some shape or form, and we
- 1:05:09just want her interrogated properly. Is
- 1:05:11that all that we can ask for? Because
- 1:05:13we've seen it over and over and over and
- 1:05:16over and over and over and over over
- 1:05:18over over over like this case has been
- 1:05:21so done over.
- 1:05:23I watch react every day and be like,
- 1:05:26"Oh, it's the monkey see the only one
- 1:05:27that does it."
- 1:05:29No. No, I'm not.
- 1:05:31Um
- 1:05:35But this case warrants the opening or
- 1:05:38reopening refreshed look at new case on
- 1:05:42Nicole. Something's got to happen.
- 1:05:46And people are just like, "Oh, that's
- 1:05:47done. It's over. Let's move on."
- 1:05:49Why?
- 1:05:51Is it that bad of a problem to look at
- 1:05:53NK?
- 1:05:56We already got the bad guy.
- 1:05:58Just look.
- 1:06:01How hard is it? And then people are
- 1:06:03like, "Well, how hard is it to forget
- 1:06:05about?" People are still wondering about
- 1:06:07the Lizzie Borden case. People are still
- 1:06:09wondering about other cases, murders
- 1:06:11that happened back how many years ago?
- 1:06:16Because there might be somebody else
- 1:06:17involved.
- 1:06:19It always happens.
- 1:06:23Drop your guys' thoughts and opinions
