- 0:00In this wetland, to survive, the young
- 0:02must learn how to play dead. And a
- 0:04father, to protect his young, must
- 0:06learn to become a strange, multi-legged
- 0:08creature. This bird is the African
- 0:12jacana, also known as the lily trotter.
- 0:15Its slender, stick-like legs help
- 0:16distribute its weight to run and jump
- 0:18across lily pads. These tiny legs carry
- 0:20no great strength, yet they bear a
- 0:22massive responsibility of fatherhood.
- 0:24In their species, the mother abandons
- 0:25the nest shortly after laying her eggs.
- 0:27To put it bluntly, she goes off to
- 0:29flirt with another suitor. The nests
- 0:31containing the unborn lives are left
- 0:33entirely to the father. From that day
- 0:35on, he doesn't dare close his eyes; a
- 0:37gentle breeze or a ripple could signal
- 0:39danger. Take, for instance, a multi-ton
- 0:42elephant foraging; every time it swings
- 0:44its trunk, the entire water surface
- 0:46trembles. The father is terrified, but
- 0:50he cannot move the nest nor stop this
- 0:52beast. He can only silently lower his
- 0:54breast, using his body heat to keep the
- 0:56eggs warm. After a few days, the eggs
- 0:59finally begin to hatch. The newly
- 1:00hatched chicks are only as small as a
- 1:02lemon. Before their downy feathers are
- 1:03even dry, they are already wobbling
- 1:05across the lily pads. At this stage,
- 1:06they are easy prey for the African fish
- 1:08eagle. The glare of the sun on the
- 1:10water cannot hinder its sharp,
- 1:12predatory eyes. When a predator appears
- 1:14, in order to live, one must sometimes
- 1:15stay as silent as the dead. Without a
- 1:17cry or a struggle, the four chicks
- 1:19quickly submerge their bodies into the
- 1:20water. Because to run away now would
- 1:22create movement. It seems the eagle has
- 1:25spotted something, but fortunately, it
- 1:27is just a fish. Yet, as soon as the
- 1:29danger from the sky passes, shadows
- 1:31emerge from beneath the water. A
- 1:32crocodile is silently sensing the
- 1:34slightest movement. Sensing danger, the
- 1:37father flaps his wings hard and dashes
- 1:39away from his brood. He tries to make
- 1:41himself stand out to draw the
- 1:42predator's attention. He cannot kill
- 1:44the danger; he only knows how to lure
- 1:46the danger toward himself. Some time
- 1:49later, when the water becomes calm
- 1:50again, the father calls his brood back
- 1:52home. The first, second, and third
- 1:54chicks crawled under his wings, but he
- 1:56still felt something was missing. The
- 1:58father bird kept calling out in vain.
- 2:00Until he noticed the fourth chick
- 2:02submerged, with only its tiny,
- 2:04straw-like beak poking out to breathe.
- 2:06What a good kid, patient enough to stay
- 2:08hidden underwater.
- 2:09That's my boy.
- 2:11Only when the father approached did it
- 2:13finally move. The father lowered his
- 2:16wings, waited for all four to tuck in,
- 2:18then clamped them tight and headed
- 2:19toward deeper water. And when the first
- 2:21photos of this multi-legged dad went
- 2:23viral, they sparked a wave of curiosity
- 2:25and hilarious misunderstandings.
