- 0:00hey guys my name is Jason gron I am a
- 0:03co-founder and chief creative officer
- 0:05for rad lab architecture and development
- 0:08company we specialize in modular
- 0:13Innovation and we are leading
- 0:15architectual firm and development
- 0:17company specializing in high-end Custom
- 0:21Homes modular construction and
- 0:23Hospitality projects how would you
- 0:25describe your design style or approach
- 0:27if we had a client would be different
- 0:30from being my own client right so let's
- 0:32say we have a client the approach would
- 0:35be to do a series of interviews with the
- 0:38client for example I'll just stick with
- 0:40one once we've signed up we know where
- 0:42they want to have their project location
- 0:45and we've identify the
- 0:47scope we start to do a needs and want
- 0:50exercise say it's a custom home for a
- 0:53husband and wife so we give them an
- 0:55individual packet they have to fill out
- 0:58themselves in case studies and imag is
- 1:00of the styles that they like they have
- 1:02to give us a list of needs and wants and
- 1:04then we compare them together and it's
- 1:07almost like a therapy session for them
- 1:10because they didn't know that you know
- 1:12some of their ideas were not lining up
- 1:15and we get to the True Heart of what the
- 1:18program is in scope is going to be start
- 1:21designing and come up with Concepts
- 1:23starting with massing models um I'll
- 1:26spend a lot of time on the site
- 1:29understanding the site conditions all
- 1:30the Sun and wind prevailing winds and
- 1:32all that's coming in and then I will
- 1:35present some very conceptual sketch type
- 1:38Concepts to them
- 1:40so our approach is always different with
- 1:43every client if I was working for myself
- 1:45it would be similar I'd have to ask
- 1:46myself all those questions and our
- 1:48business partners all those questions
- 1:49and it's it's probably driven more from
- 1:52a development standpoint maybe from a
- 1:56performa starting with the numbers how
- 2:00do you understand and me clients needs
- 2:02you know we like to get things done
- 2:06according to their timeline and get
- 2:08things done on budget that's very
- 2:10important to us so I would say those are
- 2:12the client's two most important needs is
- 2:15budget and timeline it's a rare case
- 2:18when you get a client and says hey it's
- 2:20budget free and I got all the time in
- 2:22the world so just have fun so I've had
- 2:25one of those in my life it was amazing
- 2:27but for the most part the other 99% are
- 2:30budget and timeline what's your typical
- 2:32design process understanding the site
- 2:37really well even if you have to stay on
- 2:39site by camping it's understanding what
- 2:43you can do Under the client's budget
- 2:45kind of taking your ego out of it and
- 2:48delivering what the client
- 2:49wants while putting your Creative Touch
- 2:53and expertise on it the technical design
- 2:55process is getting the base files and we
- 2:58need like a site server survey or we
- 3:00need some kind of civil site plan or we
- 3:03need the base file and Cad and then I
- 3:05start doing massing models I start
- 3:06bringing my families I start designing
- 3:08to get a good concept going and then
- 3:10once we get on to past schematic or past
- 3:13design development then we will do some
- 3:16pricing estimation with
- 3:18contractors and make sure we're on
- 3:20budget with our
- 3:22design and then once we get past that
- 3:24we'll move on to construction documents
- 3:26which features of Ryan made you decide
- 3:28to start using it for your project well
- 3:30first of all it was like very not
- 3:32intimidating so going into to rayon was
- 3:36very easy to understand and use right
- 3:38off the bat the blank white space and
- 3:41and you know whiteboard was really
- 3:42helpful to bring everything in and kind
- 3:44of be really disorganized at first and
- 3:46not have to be so organized and then I I
- 3:49love to use the dimension tool I love to
- 3:52use the hatch um I love to
- 3:56use um the tables feature annotations
- 4:01are great and easy even bringing in
- 4:04files is just so fluid and easy through
- 4:07rayon and and then obviously creating
- 4:09pages is is seamless creating a new page
- 4:12laying it out is is great how is Ryan
- 4:15improved your design process compared to
- 4:18other tools you've used previously yeah
- 4:20I think it's improved the design process
- 4:23because you can you can design in Ram
- 4:26it's that Perfect Blend between
- 4:28Technical and fluidity where it's more
- 4:32visual meaning like the interface is not
- 4:35just like a very technical application
- 4:38where you're just drawing line by line
- 4:41the features and the colors and the
- 4:43hatch families I mean one thing I forgot
- 4:46to mention was like the blocks the
- 4:47integrated blocks in libraries is huge
- 4:50you know before in CAD you would have to
- 4:52download those or find those and bring
- 4:54them in so having those libraries built
- 4:57in blocks of libraries and then being
- 4:58able to like bring in your own and save
- 5:01those as well and actually I think you
- 5:04can make them a part of like the rayon
- 5:07Master Library which is really cool um
- 5:10that is that's a great feature that's a
- 5:12great feature it saves a lot of time um
- 5:15than having to like have your own and
- 5:17develop your all your own families yeah
- 5:22[Music]
