- 0:03- [Doctor] When it comes to heart disease,
- 0:04where you live dictates when you die.
- 0:08(soft peaceful music)
- 0:17- As healthcare institutions,
- 0:19we need to pay as much attention to factors
- 0:23like living conditions, poverty, education,
- 0:26as we do to treatment of disease.
- 0:29- The analogy is use is an iceberg.
- 0:32At the top of that iceberg are things like mortality rates,
- 0:36diabetes, cancer rates.
- 0:37But there are all of these things underneath the surface,
- 0:40underneath the water that are leading
- 0:42to what you see at the top.
- 0:44- Things like access to healthy food, access to clean water,
- 0:47access to a good job, safety, housing.
- 0:52Students show up at school hungry.
- 0:55They can't learn.
- 0:57A lack of transportation to a grocery store
- 1:01means you don't get the food you need.
- 1:03All these external social determinants in fact,
- 1:08determine many of the health outcomes that we see.
- 1:10- It's looking at all of those different puzzle pieces
- 1:13together and then figuring out how are those things
- 1:16in totality affecting your health.
- 1:19- Life expectancy in the Loop is 85 years.
- 1:23And if that were a country,
- 1:25it'd be ranked in the first in the world.
- 1:27Think Japan.
- 1:31But you go seven stops and life expectancy
- 1:34in Garfield Park plummets to under 69.
- 1:39- One of the things that's startling about that
- 1:41is a life expectancy of 69 is what it is in Iraq and Haiti.
- 1:45So something else is going on.
- 1:47Is it violence in these neighborhoods?
- 1:49And the reality is no, it's heart disease
- 1:52and it's cancer.
- 1:53- We've allowed the negative narrative
- 1:57to drive everything we do.
- 2:00- We hear so often that these communities are desolate
- 2:03and there's no hope and nothing going on.
- 2:06It couldn't be farther from the truth.
- 2:07There is vibrancy, there is activity.
- 2:09There are people working everyday
- 2:11and trying to make lives better.
- 2:15We need to create a common vision, a common mission
- 2:19across neighborhoods and across sectors
- 2:21within a neighborhood.
- 2:22- There are efforts at the macro level that
- 2:25The American Heart Association is doing in terms of funding
- 2:28that's clearly a critical part of improving
- 2:31quality of life and quality of health.
- 2:33The opportunity to also work at the local level
- 2:35community by community.
- 2:37Those things are very synergistic in terms
- 2:39of how they have to come together.
- 2:41- We want to reduce the life expectancy gap
- 2:44between the Loop and the west side of Chicago
- 2:46by 50% by 2030.
- 2:49- It's not something that one institution
- 2:51can do by themselves.
- 2:53It's multi neighborhood and it's multi partner.
- 2:56- If we can change living conditions,
- 2:58we can change life itself.
- 3:01It's really up to us.
- 3:03(inspirational music)
