Full transcript
- 0:03Hi Susan. Thanks again um for going over
- 0:06all the consent with me today.
- 0:08Um do you want to get started on what
- 0:10brings you here?
- 0:12>> Um yeah, so
- 0:16I've been
- 0:18generally feeling a little lost um
- 0:22lately.
- 0:23Um not really sure what to do in life.
- 0:28Um my mom passed away recently and I've
- 0:32been taking care of her for the past 10
- 0:35years.
- 0:37Um she had Alzheimer's, so I was her
- 0:40main caretaker um and I wasn't working
- 0:44during that whole time.
- 0:46Um around the same time my youngest
- 0:50daughter went to college, so I moved in
- 0:53with my mom to take care of her and all
- 0:56my children are adults, so they're all
- 0:58out of the house. Um
- 1:01And I've been divorced for
- 1:0520 years um
- 1:08and yeah, I've just been pretty
- 1:12lost with what to do with myself now
- 1:15without my mom and um kind of not having
- 1:20purpose
- 1:21anymore in my days. Um so I was hoping
- 1:25that maybe
- 1:27you could help me out with that cuz I'm
- 1:28feeling a little stuck.
- 1:31>> Yeah, absolutely. What you're going to
- 1:33do first I want to apologize and say I'm
- 1:35so sorry for your loss. Um
- 1:38I can only imagine the grief that you're
- 1:39still um
- 1:41struggling with.
- 1:42And I hear that you said that you are
- 1:45feeling lost and kind of not sure where
- 1:48to go in life, which is completely
- 1:50normal um for what you're going through
- 1:51right now. It's definitely a lot on your
- 1:53plate.
- 1:54Um can you talk to me more about your
- 1:57mom and um
- 1:59your dynamic together?
- 2:01>> Um, yeah, we are very close. Um,
- 2:05especially since
- 2:07um, you know, it it was just me and um
- 2:11and single and my kids were gone. So,
- 2:15um
- 2:15and I wasn't working either. So, she was
- 2:17pretty much my main
- 2:19uh relationship in my life um, aside
- 2:23from just
- 2:25the main kind of um
- 2:27responsibilities I had.
- 2:29Um, she was pretty much the main
- 2:32relationship in my life. So, so I do
- 2:34have a sense of loneliness now also
- 2:38now without her.
- 2:41>> I can totally see that. Um
- 2:44and that's completely valid. Um
- 2:47what do you feel like outside of your
- 2:49mom and your kids brings you joy?
- 2:53>> Um
- 2:55you know, that's something I I guess I'm
- 2:58kind of struggling with now because I
- 3:01just
- 3:02um
- 3:03it's been so long since I've
- 3:06even been able to think about myself
- 3:08since my focus has been on her. So, I
- 3:10kind of just have uh no real motivation
- 3:14anymore. I mostly just watch TV,
- 3:17um stay home
- 3:19uh scroll on my phone
- 3:22um
- 3:23>> Yeah.
- 3:23>> Yeah.
- 3:24>> Do you maybe there is something that you
- 3:26and your mom did together? Uh
- 3:29like go for walks or you know, maybe you
- 3:32took her to the store or
- 3:34um just memories that you have with her
- 3:36that you could kind of still do um in
- 3:39her honor and you know, to make you feel
- 3:41connected to her and
- 3:42um that that loneliness can ease, you
- 3:45know, and you'll feel more connected on
- 3:47that level.
- 3:49Um
- 3:50was there anything that you did together
- 3:52that kind of things about her?
- 3:54>> Um, yeah, actually we I would take her
- 3:57to the park
- 3:59every once in a while to to get her
- 4:01outside and we would go walking.
- 4:05So, that's that's a nice idea. Though we
- 4:08have a park that we would go to nearby
- 4:10all the time. So, maybe I could just uh
- 4:15go and
- 4:16take a walk out there in the mornings or
- 4:19something.
- 4:20>> Maybe try it just once or twice a week
- 4:22and kind of just talk to her, you know,
- 4:25bring a journal or just talk, you know,
- 4:27in your mind.
- 4:29See how that feels in your body and like
- 4:31connect with her in that way.
- 4:33I think that could be a special thing
- 4:35for you try.
- 4:38>> Yeah, yeah, I like that. Um,
- 4:41especially since
- 4:42that'll get me give me a reason to get
- 4:45me out of the out of the house and uh
- 4:48I could use some exercise since
- 4:51you know, especially towards the end of
- 4:53her Alzheimer's we stayed home majority
- 4:57of the time. So, we weren't going to the
- 5:00park as much as we were in her earlier
- 5:03stages. So,
- 5:05um, yeah, I could I could definitely do
- 5:08that.
- 5:09>> Awesome. I wanted to go back to the
- 5:11divorce and uh your kids a little bit.
- 5:14Um,
- 5:16could you tell me more about the
- 5:17divorce? I know you said it was 20 years
- 5:19ago. Um,
- 5:21what made you guys divorce?
- 5:25>> Um, well, I was very focused on my
- 5:31children and
- 5:33taking care of them and my husband
- 5:37worked a lot and so we kind of just
- 5:41became distant
- 5:43with him being away a lot, but he did
- 5:47have to um support our family, so I
- 5:50understand that. But uh yeah, our our
- 5:52relationship just
- 5:55um went pretty stale after a while, and
- 5:59we decided to go our separate ways.
- 6:03>> Yeah, so I'm hearing that um
- 6:06you decided to go your separate ways,
- 6:07the relationship's kind of fading out,
- 6:09fizzling out
- 6:11um with the stressors of life and kids.
- 6:13It's very common.
- 6:14>> Yeah.
- 6:15>> Um
- 6:16do your kids um
- 6:18do you feel like your kids are closer
- 6:19with you now, or how has that
- 6:22relationship changed with your kids?
- 6:23Like how old were they when
- 6:25you got divorced?
- 6:27>> Well,
- 6:28we were we were really close um because
- 6:31I was, you know, a stay-at-home mom, and
- 6:34I was taking care of them, and then as
- 6:36they got older, you know, they they went
- 6:38away to college, especially um
- 6:41my youngest. So they're they're not in
- 6:44the same town as me, so they're not
- 6:46nearby, and they live their own adult
- 6:49lives, and the older ones have jobs, and
- 6:53so, you know, I don't really want to
- 6:54bother them too much. I know they're all
- 6:57busy, but they do call in and and check
- 7:00on me every once in a while um to make
- 7:03sure I'm okay, but unfortunately,
- 7:06they're not near me where
- 7:10um
- 7:11I can see them, or they can they can
- 7:13visit, so I do miss them a lot, um but I
- 7:18don't I don't want to bother them.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:22>> Yeah, thank you for sharing that. Um I
- 7:24just kind of wanted to see that dynamic.
- 7:26Um
- 7:27yeah, have any of them reached out
- 7:30regarding your mom bill? Like I'm hoping
- 7:31that you do have some kind of phone
- 7:34relationship with them, or that you can
- 7:36call them if you do have those phone
- 7:38lines.
- 7:38>> Yeah.
- 7:39Yeah, they have been very supportive.
- 7:43They have
- 7:45expressed some concern for me. So,
- 7:49I started I have started
- 7:51checking on myself and going to the
- 7:52doctor and and actually the doctor did
- 7:55refer me
- 7:58to come to you and start therapy just
- 8:00because
- 8:02Yeah, I guess
- 8:03you know.
- 8:05>> That's great. I'm so proud of you for
- 8:06coming and
- 8:07it takes a lot especially with you're
- 8:09dealing with and hopefully we can
- 8:11facilitate a great journey together and
- 8:14you know, work on you getting back to
- 8:16your passions and feeling that sense of
- 8:18joy again.
- 8:20So, I really would like you to start
- 8:21with yeah, the park visits and see how
- 8:24that feels in our next session.
- 8:26And then just like reflect on
- 8:29those feelings that you can talk to your
- 8:32mom in that sense of
- 8:34connection in the park.
- 8:37>> Yeah, thank you.
- 8:39I do I do think that will help me a lot.
- 8:41Um
- 8:42and I I am interested in
- 8:45in
- 8:46working together and
- 8:49I feel like that was a good suggestion
- 8:51for me. So, I would want to
- 8:54stick with that and and
- 8:56share with you my experience.
- 8:59>> Great. Thank you so much. And yeah, we
- 9:01can dive deeper into other modalities
- 9:03and things as we continue to develop our
- 9:06relationship and I learn more about you,
- 9:08but
- 9:09again, I'm so sorry for your loss and um
- 9:12you know, it's a big step for you going
- 9:14to therapy and grief you know, comes in
- 9:18waves and I'm just
- 9:19happy to assist you with this journey.
- 9:23So, nice to meet you again and thanks
- 9:25for the first session.
- 9:26>> Thank you.
- 9:28>> You too. See you then.
