  1. 0:03Alice has had one major problem over the
  2. 0:05last 3 years. Neural networks have
  3. 0:07become thousands of times smarter over
  4. 0:09these years.
  5. 0:10But the speaker in our kitchen still had
  6. 0:12the same old Alice that was released 5
  7. 0:13years ago.
  8. 0:16And you couldn't change her, because the
  9. 0:17speaker couldn't be reflashed and you
  10. 0:18couldn't put a different brain in there
  11. 0:20.
  12. 0:21Plus, you have to pay for a subscription
  13. 0:23every month. Well, this October, what
  14. 0:25many were waiting for finally happened.
  15. 0:29People got inside the station, and now
  16. 0:31it runs Spotify, Minecraft, and instead
  17. 0:34of Alice, ChatGPT or Claude can talk to
  18. 0:36you in real-time.
  19. 0:39And on that very same speaker that used
  20. 0:40to only speak with Alice's voice.
  21. 0:42Essentially, this is Alice 2.0, only it
  22. 0:45wasn't made by Yandex, but by over
  23. 0:4710,000 people in less than 10 days. In
  24. 0:50this video, I will tell you what they
  25. 0:52managed to do and what you can actually
  26. 0:54do now with a speaker that was limited
  27. 0:57to the Yandex ecosystem for years.
  28. 0:59You're on the Danray channel. My name is
  29. 1:01Dan. And today's video won't be about a
  30. 1:03new model, but about a device that might
  31. 1:05be sitting in your kitchen, just like it
  32. 1:06is in mine. But first, let's be honest:
  33. 1:08why did people want to change Alice's
  34. 1:10brain so much in the first place? Oh,
  35. 1:12and I almost forgot. Hit the subscribe
  36. 1:14button in advance. And if you don't like
  37. 1:15it, you can always unsubscribe. Let's go
  38. 1:17. Look, the Yandex speaker is designed
  39. 1:19so that it has only one brain, and
  40. 1:21Yandex itself chooses it.
  41. 1:23What model is inside, what it answers,
  42. 1:25how smart it is—the company decides that
  43. 1:27, not you.
  44. 1:28And the main problem isn't even that.
  45. 1:30The main problem is that you can't
  46. 1:32customize it to your liking at all. And
  47. 1:34the desire to customize, well, one way
  48. 1:36or another, many people have it.
  49. 1:38I mean, imagine buying an iPhone that
  50. 1:40only has Apple Music on it, and you
  51. 1:42can't install anything else, not a
  52. 1:44single app of your own.
  53. 1:45That's about how it's set up. The Yandex
  54. 1:47Station. It has one system inside, and
  55. 1:50it is limited to the programs that
  56. 1:52Yandex itself allows. And it would be
  57. 1:54fine if this system were cool, but
  58. 1:56compared to modern neural networks, like
  59. 1:58ChatGPT or Claude, Alice is still
  60. 2:00lagging very far behind.
  61. 2:03For example, I've always wanted to be
  62. 2:04able to just say, "Alice, check this,"
  63. 2:06instead of reaching for my phone and
  64. 2:08opening ChatGPT.
  65. 2:09And for her to think it through and give
  66. 2:11me the right answer. But that thing
  67. 2:13didn't exist.
  68. 2:14And most of the time, if you ask Alice a
  69. 2:15question, she'll give you a really
  70. 2:17awkward answer, and it's easier to just
  71. 2:18go straight to ChatGPT for the correct
  72. 2:20one.
  73. 2:21I, by the way, have occasionally looked
  74. 2:23into whether it could be reflashed, but
  75. 2:25it always came down to it being very
  76. 2:26difficult and, essentially, practically
  77. 2:28impossible.
  78. 2:30And finally, on October 20, a developer
  79. 2:32with the nickname Btracker showed that
  80. 2:34the small station can be opened without
  81. 2:36taking the case apart.
  82. 2:38And the error that made this possible
  83. 2:41wasn't even Yandex's, but a third-party
  84. 2:43company's, which many devices around the
  85. 2:46world relied on. But Yandex reacted
  86. 2:48quite quickly. And from October 21 to 23
  87. 2:51, all active stations received an update
  88. 2:54, and this door was closed.
  89. 2:57But it’s important to clarify here that
  90. 2:58Yandex, in its documentation, admitted
  91. 3:00that if you reset the speaker to factory
  92. 3:02settings, it will revert to the old
  93. 3:03firmware, and along with it, this very
  94. 3:05vulnerability.
  95. 3:07Therefore, Yandex itself explicitly
  96. 3:09advises against resetting its stations.
  97. 3:11That is, if you simply roll the speaker
  98. 3:13back to factory settings, the same
  99. 3:15method will work again.
  100. 3:16But it is important to understand that
  101. 3:18as soon as such a speaker goes online,
  102. 3:19it will update itself again. But if you
  103. 3:21don't let it update, then everything
  104. 3:23will be okay. So it turns out that for
  105. 3:25customization, the speaker is still not
  106. 3:27closed off. You just need to perform a
  107. 3:28reset, that's all. And during these days
  108. 3:30, the most important thing happened. A
  109. 3:32community of over 10,000 people gathered
  110. 3:34around one speaker. Literally in less
  111. 3:37than 10 days. And they created a common
  112. 3:40Wiki for different models. Mini, Lite,
  113. 3:42Midi, Max. They made their own app store
  114. 3:45for the speaker, actually two of them,
  115. 3:46and they are being developed by
  116. 3:48different people. And what do you think
  117. 3:50they put in there? First and foremost,
  118. 3:52of course, Spotify, so that music
  119. 3:53wouldn't only play through Yandex.
  120. 3:56AirPlay, so the speaker could play
  121. 3:57directly from an iPhone like a regular
  122. 3:59speaker, and someone, according to him,
  123. 4:01even ran a Minecraft server on it.
  124. 4:03Someone modified the LED clock on the
  125. 4:05housing and displayed their own
  126. 4:06inscriptions there. And here is what is
  127. 4:08important to understand. Inside, the
  128. 4:10station is a small Linux computer with a
  129. 4:12processor, memory, Wi-Fi, microphones,
  130. 4:15and a good speaker. It's just that
  131. 4:17before, it only had one firmware from
  132. 4:19Yandex and that was it. But now, you can
  133. 4:22run programs on this computer just like
  134. 4:23on a regular one. And all this with
  135. 4:26voice control. The speaker has stopped
  136. 4:28being a single-function device. It has
  137. 4:30become a computer that you customize for
  138. 4:32yourself.
  139. 4:33This, of course, might all sound funny,
  140. 4:35but I think it says something else.
  141. 4:38People paid for a subscription for years
  142. 4:40not because they liked it, but because
  143. 4:42they had no other option.
  144. 4:45And as soon as the option appeared, over
  145. 4:4710,000 people rushed to do what the
  146. 4:49speaker had always been capable of, but
  147. 4:51couldn't because of Yandex's
  148. 4:53restrictions, since the hardware was
  149. 4:55ready the whole time; only the door was
  150. 4:57locked.
  151. 4:58But something else caught my attention
  152. 5:00even more. People started changing
  153. 5:02Alice's brain. And there are three
  154. 5:04options here, and they are very
  155. 5:05different. The first is where the voice
  156. 5:07remains Alice's. You call her as usual,
  157. 5:09but the question itself doesn't go to
  158. 5:11Yandex, but to another neural network.
  159. 5:13It could be ChatGPT, DeepSeek, whatever
  160. 5:16, it doesn't matter. Any language model
  161. 5:19that you can connect to. In that case,
  162. 5:21essentially, you can use any neural
  163. 5:23network you have access to. On the
  164. 5:25outside, it will still be Alice, but
  165. 5:26someone else will be doing the thinking
  166. 5:28for her. The second option, to me, is
  167. 5:30the most radical.
  168. 5:31In it, the Yandex cloud is completely
  169. 5:33tossed out, and the speaker just listens
  170. 5:35, while your home computer or a server
  171. 5:37you configure does the speech
  172. 5:38recognition, thinking, and responding.
  173. 5:41And you can clone any voice you want for
  174. 5:44it. Literally 15 seconds of recording is
  175. 5:46enough for that.
  176. 5:47So in this case, the speaker will be
  177. 5:49able to answer in your own voice or any
  178. 5:51other voice you choose. Well, the third
  179. 5:53option is the coolest one, in my opinion
  180. 5:55. It was even tested on the
  181. 5:56second-generation Station Light.
  182. 5:59So, in this version, you say "Alice,"
  183. 6:01she responds, and then you're talking to
  184. 6:03ChatGPT—the same one from your phone—
  185. 6:05that interrupts you and jokes around.
  186. 6:08The speaker mutes Alice at that moment
  187. 6:10so they don't talk in unison. And it
  188. 6:12turns out you have two consciousnesses
  189. 6:14in one speaker. One from Yandex, and the
  190. 6:17second from ChatGPT, Claude, or whatever
  191. 6:19you want.
  192. 6:20And most importantly, Alice gets
  193. 6:22something she’s never actually had, even
  194. 6:24though marketers sometimes promised it
  195. 6:26to us.
  196. 6:27That’s her personality, and you can
  197. 6:29decide for yourself what personality
  198. 6:30your speaker will have. If you want her
  199. 6:33to answer briefly in two sentences
  200. 6:34instead of giving a lecture, you can set
  201. 6:36that up.
  202. 6:38Or if you want her to speak only in
  203. 6:40English with your child and correct
  204. 6:41their mistakes, that can also be
  205. 6:43configured.
  206. 6:45And if you want her to talk to you like
  207. 6:47a grumpy English butler and tease you
  208. 6:49when you ask for the weather for the
  209. 6:50third time that evening, that’s also
  210. 6:52easily written into her settings.
  211. 6:55And one more thing that is written about
  212. 6:57most often in the comments. Alice has
  213. 6:59her own rules about what can be
  214. 7:00discussed and what cannot. To many
  215. 7:02questions, it replies with something
  216. 7:04like: "Let's talk about something else.
  217. 7:05" So, ChatGPT and Claude also have their
  218. 7:08own rules, and they are by no means
  219. 7:10without limitations. But their rules are
  220. 7:12different, and they answer normal, adult
  221. 7:14questions in detail instead of diverting
  222. 7:16the conversation. And most importantly,
  223. 7:18you can now choose the speaker's brain
  224. 7:20yourself, rather than the manufacturer
  225. 7:22of your speaker. And I think it's clear
  226. 7:23here where all of this is heading now.
  227. 7:26For all the people who decided to
  228. 7:27reflash Alice over the last 10 days,
  229. 7:29this speaker has ceased to be just Alice
  230. 7:31.
  231. 7:32It is now just a microphone and a
  232. 7:34speaker in the kitchen. And the brain
  233. 7:36inside it can be swapped like a SIM card
  234. 7:37in a phone. Today it could be ChatGPT,
  235. 7:39tomorrow Claude, and the day after
  236. 7:41something else that comes out next month
  237. 7:43. And I think speaker manufacturers fear
  238. 7:46this more than any hack.
  239. 7:48Because if you can change the head, then
  240. 7:50why pay for the original one?
  241. 7:52And most likely, half of you will go
  242. 7:54google how to do this yourselves right
  243. 7:55now. Therefore, I will say right away
  244. 7:57that there will be no instructions in
  245. 7:58this video. And I don't advise you to
  246. 8:00repeat this. Although, let me tell you
  247. 8:02this.
  248. 8:03Hypothetically, completely by chance, an
  249. 8:05instruction might appear in my Telegram
  250. 8:07channel, so subscribe to it.
  251. 8:09The link to Telegram will be in the
  252. 8:10description. And most likely, an
  253. 8:12instruction on how to do this as simply
  254. 8:14as possible will appear in the near
  255. 8:15future.
  256. 8:17I won't be the one posting it, of course
  257. 8:18, someone else will, but if you're
  258. 8:19interested, you know where to look.
  259. 8:22Plus, doing all this will most likely be
  260. 8:24very simple. I am currently
  261. 8:26double-checking this method myself on a
  262. 8:28free ChatGPT subscription.
  263. 8:29And in all likelihood, it will be able
  264. 8:31to perform the entire installation
  265. 8:32following a very simple guide. You will
  266. 8:34only need to simply connect everything
  267. 8:36to your computer. Also, at the same time
  268. 8:38, my free course on how a neural network
  269. 8:40controls your computer is already in my
  270. 8:42Telegram channel. There are six short
  271. 8:44lessons, from installation to how
  272. 8:45ChatGPT builds you a website, a bot, and
  273. 8:48even a game. All of this is without
  274. 8:50programming, and a free ChatGPT
  275. 8:51subscription works there.
  276. 8:53And all the lessons take literally less
  277. 8:55than an hour or two. All this without
  278. 8:57tricky bot funnels or payments. I just
  279. 8:59posted it on my Telegram channel. Follow
  280. 9:02the link in the description. Now let's
  281. 9:04talk about what you can actually do when
  282. 9:06the speaker finally becomes yours.
  283. 9:08Look, the smallest Station Lite has only
  284. 9:12256 MB of RAM.
  285. 9:15That's less than a phone from fifteen
  286. 9:16years ago, and enthusiasts are still
  287. 9:18running several programs on it at once.
  288. 9:21And the first batch of all this,
  289. 9:22according to those same enthusiasts, was
  290. 9:24put together in two days. Of course, the
  291. 9:27first thing they put on the smart
  292. 9:28speaker was Bad Apple.
  293. 9:30It’s this black-and-white music video
  294. 9:32that enthusiasts love to run on anything
  295. 9:34that can somehow display an image: on
  296. 9:36calculators, oscilloscopes, pregnancy
  297. 9:38tests, and now on the Alice speaker
  298. 9:39itself.
  299. 9:41It’s pointless, of course, but it’s kind
  300. 9:43of like planting a flag on a summit—a
  301. 9:45sign that "the speaker is ours, I was
  302. 9:47here." But now, let’s move on to the
  303. 9:49useful stuff. They connected the speaker
  304. 9:51to Home Assistant. It’s an open-source
  305. 9:53smart home system. And Alice is no
  306. 9:55longer tied strictly to Yandex light
  307. 9:57bulbs and plugs.
  308. 9:59Now it can control all the smart devices
  309. 10:01that are connected to this very Home
  310. 10:03Assistant.
  311. 10:04And the selection of brands there is
  312. 10:06much larger than what Yandex’s smart
  313. 10:07home offers.
  314. 10:08And if you give it a ChatGPT brain, you
  315. 10:10can issue commands in your own words.
  316. 10:14Meaning, instead of saying "Alice, turn
  317. 10:15on the bedroom heater," you can just say
  318. 10:17, "Alice, I’m feeling a bit cold."
  319. 10:19And it will understand exactly what you
  320. 10:21want. Or, it turns out that Alice has a
  321. 10:24sister. In the UAE, Yandex created a
  322. 10:27version called Yasmina. She speaks
  323. 10:29Arabic and English. And now, a standard
  324. 10:32Station can be turned into a Yasmina.
  325. 10:34Imagine having a speaker in your kitchen
  326. 10:36that only talks to you in Arabic. How do
  327. 10:38you like that? Let me know in the
  328. 10:40comments.
  329. 10:41And most importantly, by installing
  330. 10:43ChatGPT on it, you can finally ask it
  331. 10:45complex questions, and it will respond
  332. 10:47like a real artificial intelligence.
  333. 10:50So, it can effectively become a ChatGPT
  334. 10:52speaker, not just an Alice speaker. And
  335. 10:55that, to me, is the coolest part. Now,
  336. 10:57let’s combine all of this with what I
  337. 10:58mentioned about the custom head. Imagine
  338. 11:00a speaker that reads your child a
  339. 11:02bedtime story in your own voice while
  340. 11:04you’re away on a business trip. A
  341. 11:06speaker where the answers aren't
  342. 11:08generated by a server far away, but by
  343. 11:10your own computer in the next room
  344. 11:12running a local neural network. And your
  345. 11:14kitchen conversations no longer go
  346. 11:16anywhere; they stay right in your home.
  347. 11:18Plus, you get a speaker with a
  348. 11:19personality that you wrote for it
  349. 11:21yourself. And all of this on the same
  350. 11:23device you bought a few years ago,
  351. 11:25thinking it wouldn't learn anything new
  352. 11:28. It turns out that Alice 2.0 wasn't
  353. 11:30created by a corporation, but by
  354. 11:31ordinary people. And it’s the same with
  355. 11:33this channel. There’s no company or
  356. 11:35investor behind it. I quit my job and
  357. 11:38bet everything on this channel. I don’t
  358. 11:40have sponsors, and I don’t take just any
  359. 11:42random ads. And when I started this
  360. 11:43channel, I dreamed of reaching 100,000
  361. 11:45subscribers.
  362. 11:47We are almost at 100k now, but according
  363. 11:49to the stats, subscribers still account
  364. 11:51for only about 20%of total watch time.
  365. 11:54And it's highly likely that you're
  366. 11:55watching without being subscribed right
  367. 11:57now. If that's the case, please hit the
  368. 11:59subscribe button right now. And if you
  369. 12:01end up not liking it, you can just
  370. 12:03unsubscribe. Do we have a deal? And a
  371. 12:04huge thank you to everyone who donated.
  372. 12:06The transfers were for 100 or 200 rubles
  373. 12:08each. But together, it added up to a
  374. 12:10large sum. And if you'd also like to
  375. 12:12support the channel, the link is in the
  376. 12:14description. And now I want to ask you.
  377. 12:16Do you think it's right to do this at
  378. 12:19all?
  379. 12:20To take a thing you bought with your own
  380. 12:22money and improve it yourself, even if
  381. 12:23the manufacturer didn't intend for it,
  382. 12:25or is it better to leave the speaker
  383. 12:26alone since that's how it was made?
  384. 12:29Let me know in the comments what you
  385. 12:31think about this. As for me, I'll tell
  386. 12:33you what makes me happiest about this
  387. 12:35whole story.
  388. 12:36Just a year ago, I wouldn't have even
  389. 12:38bothered because to get into a speaker
  390. 12:40like this, you used to have to take it
  391. 12:42apart, desolder the flash drive, rewrite
  392. 12:44it, and solder it back.
  393. 12:46It was such a huge hassle that I would
  394. 12:48have just watched from the sidelines and
  395. 12:50moved on. But now, everything is
  396. 12:52different. Now you just open an AI,
  397. 12:54explain what you want to do in your own
  398. 12:57words.
  399. 12:59And it leads you by the hand, writes
  400. 13:00code for you, guides you through every
  401. 13:02step, and if something breaks, it
  402. 13:03figures out why and fixes it itself.
  403. 13:06And now, to modify your speaker, you no
  404. 13:08longer need to be a programmer. You just
  405. 13:10need to want to do it and set aside a
  406. 13:13couple of hours. And perhaps even those
  407. 13:15who won't touch their speaker will
  408. 13:17benefit from this.
  409. 13:18Because when Yandex sees that a
  410. 13:20significant number of people are
  411. 13:21canceling subscriptions and moving to an
  412. 13:24unofficial, raw version, they will have
  413. 13:26to upgrade their main Alice so that it
  414. 13:28becomes a real competitor to the Alice
  415. 13:29created by the enthusiast community.
  416. 13:32And in my opinion, this is the best
  417. 13:34thing that has ever happened to Alice.
  418. 13:3610,000 people, in less than 10 days,
  419. 13:39created Alice 2.0. And any one of us can
  420. 13:42make it now. Subscribe to the channel.
  421. 13:45Bye everyone.
