- 0:04>> right, everybody. If you've made it this
- 0:06far with me, congratulations. This is
- 0:08huge. Our strings are on. And
- 0:15[music] that doesn't sound too bad. I'm
- 0:17pretty happy with that. Now, it's going
- 0:19to take a little bit of coaxing to get
- 0:22it to play a little bit better. So, we
- 0:24want to go through a complete setup. And
- 0:26I'm going to walk you guys through that
- 0:28right now. In the setup, the first
- 0:30adjustment we need to take a look at is
- 0:32the neck relief. And that is kind of the
- 0:36sway that is built into the guitar neck.
- 0:41So to measure that, I'm going to put a
- 0:43capo on the first.
- 0:47And then I'm going to fret at the 14th
- 0:52so that I've got a straight line from
- 0:54the first fret to the 14th fret. Take a
- 0:57feeler gauge. Now, you can use a
- 1:01business card as well. Business cards
- 1:03tend to work fairly well, but I like to
- 1:06use um this feeler gauge at 8,000.
- 1:10Anywhere between 8,000 and um 1/100th
- 1:16is going to be just fine.
- 1:19And I'm going to feel around the sixth
- 1:21or seventh fret. So when I insert that
- 1:24feeler gauge, I am actually pushing the
- 1:27string up just a little bit and I don't
- 1:30want to do that. It can touch the
- 1:32string, but I don't want this feeler
- 1:35gauge to actually move the string. And
- 1:38it is. So if my feeler gauge is touching
- 1:43this, I want to move the neck up a
- 1:46little bit to provide just a little bit
- 1:48more relief. So, I need to go in with my
- 1:52truss rod wrench. And with these LMI
- 1:55truss rods, if you turn it clockwise,
- 2:01it is going to force that neck back and
- 2:04it's going to um give you less relief.
- 2:08If you move that counterclockwise, it's
- 2:11going to bring the peg head up just a
- 2:14little bit. So, I need to move it
- 2:16counterclockwise
- 2:18just a little bit. Not much at all. So,
- 2:22I'm going to move it. Okay, now it's in.
- 2:29Now, it was in neutral and
- 2:33I moved it just a little bit and that
- 2:35tightened it up. And that's kind of all
- 2:38I really need to do is move it
- 2:42counterclockwise just enough to put some
- 2:44tension on it.
- 2:49And let's see if that did anything.
- 2:55Just moved the string slightly. So I'm
- 2:57going to move it just a little bit more.
- 3:04Just the tiniest bit of movement there.
- 3:08I'm going to move it
- 3:11one more time.
- 3:19And that is perfect.
- 3:23I'm getting almost no movement.
- 3:27Really not pushing the strings up and
- 3:29down. I'm making contact.
- 3:34Okay, let me check the high E
- 3:37just to see where we're at there.
- 3:42There we don't have quite as much.
- 3:46A little less neck relief right there
- 3:53on the sixth and seventh. It is moving
- 3:55those strings a little bit. All right,
- 3:57one more adjustment
- 4:01and that should really take care of it.
- 4:13Okay, that's really
- 4:18about perfect.
- 4:23And I'm gonna use
- 4:26[snorts] one feeler gauge bigger,
- 4:30which is 011.
- 4:34And there it is moving the string. Yep.
- 4:38So I'm at a good place. [music]
- 4:4008.
- 4:43Neck relief is done.
- 4:45Just to recap real quick, cable at the
- 4:49first, fret at the 14th, somewhere
- 4:52around the um sixth or 7th. We want to
- 4:55check right in the middle.
- 4:58We want to do
- 5:0008 or a business card is usually about
- 5:05that thickness. And I'm just making
- 5:08contact, sliding under, not moving the
- 5:10string. And that is exactly what I want.
- 5:14The next one we'll move on to is action
- 5:18at the nut. We'll see you then.
- 5:24[music]
