Chapter 100: Set Your Action At The 12th Fret Like A PRO! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:04Now we need to figure out action at the
- 0:0812th fret.
- 0:11So the 12th fret is halfway down our
- 0:15scale.
- 0:17I want to shoot for about 2 and 12
- 0:20millimeters on the low E and 2
- 0:24millimeters on the high E. I am I'm
- 0:27about.88
- 0:30mm 75 millime 8 mm off um here not quite
- 0:36a full millimeter which means that I
- 0:39have to take twice that amount off at
- 0:42the bridge. So, I'm going to be at 1 and
- 0:48a2 mm uh at the bridge that I need to
- 0:52take off because I if we're half our
- 0:56scale length, that means we're at a 2:1
- 0:58ratio. So, whatever the amount is that I
- 1:01take off on the saddle, then half of
- 1:04that is going to be measured here. So,
- 1:07if I take off one millimeter at the
- 1:09saddle, that means I drop half a
- 1:12millimeter at the 12th fret.
- 1:14And since I need about
- 1:1875.8
- 1:19to be dropped here, I need to take twice
- 1:22that at the saddle, which means that I
- 1:26need to take off about a 16th.
- 1:30So, I am going to loosen up the strings
- 1:32now
- 1:34cuz I need to get this saddle out of
- 1:37here.
- 1:39Now, I do have this little jig here,
- 1:42which is super handy. And it's got
- 1:46grooves built into it with measurements
- 1:48already set. So, I'm going to take a
- 1:52planed pencil so I get a nice sharp
- 1:54line. And I need to take off about one
- 1:57and a half millimeters, just over one
- 1:59and a half. And that's a 16th. So, I'm
- 2:03going to draw my line right at that
- 2:0716th.
- 2:09So, I am going to take it right up to
- 2:12that line and I'm going to do that on my
- 2:14sander and
- 2:17I'll be right back. All right, this is
- 2:20now sanded down and I'll put it back in
- 2:24the saddle slot and we will double
- 2:27check.
- 2:30There we go. Oh yeah, perfect.
- 2:33Wind the strings back up.
- 2:39Okay, now I'll tune this back up and
- 2:42I'll double check at the 12th fret. Now
- 2:45that the saddle is shaped, I'm going to
- 2:47measure this again at the 12th fret. We
- 2:49are just
- 2:51about 2 and 1/2 mm there
- 2:55and
- 2:58right at 2 mm on the high E. So, we're
- 3:03good there.
- 3:06That sounds pretty good. Now we just
- 3:09have to check the intonation as our
- 3:12final step. So we will check that out in
- 3:15the [music] next video.
