- 0:03immigration is a big issue in a recent
- 0:06poll it topped the list of the most
- 0:07important issues facing Britain but what
- 0:10evidence do we have about its impact on
- 0:12jobs on services and on the UK the first
- 0:15thing we know is that the number of
- 0:17immigrants has been increasing and they
- 0:18are now about 8 million people just
- 0:21under half of new immigrants are from
- 0:23the European Union most of these come
- 0:26here to work most immigrants from
- 0:29outside the European Union come here to
- 0:31study some people believe immigrants are
- 0:34taking jobs from British workers it's
- 0:37true that if an immigrant takes a job
- 0:38than a British worker can't at the same
- 0:41time immigrants create new jobs by
- 0:44setting up their own businesses and by
- 0:46spending the money they
- 0:48earn immigrants also enable employers to
- 0:51recruit to less desirable jobs sometimes
- 0:53allowing British workers to carry out
- 0:55better paid and more desirable tasks
- 0:58while immigration has reduced uced pay
- 1:00in some jobs it has increased it in
- 1:03others overall the result is a larger
- 1:06more diverse and more productive
- 1:10economy almost 2 million more people are
- 1:13in work now compared to 2010 half are
- 1:16immigrants half are
- 1:19British immigrants are not just workers
- 1:23like everyone else they use services and
- 1:25this worries some people they are
- 1:27concerned about the impact on our
- 1:29schools and believe that British
- 1:31children can't get school places new
- 1:33immigrants are often single and
- 1:35childless however if they stay then it's
- 1:38no surprise that they created their own
- 1:39families
- 1:41here while some people believe that
- 1:43children who speak another language at
- 1:44home perform badly research evidence
- 1:47shows that they often do well and so do
- 1:50other pupils in the same
- 1:53schools it's also said that immigrants
- 1:55are a drain on our Health
- 1:57Service no one knows exactly how much
- 2:00immigrants cost the NHS what we do know
- 2:04is that recent immigrants are younger
- 2:06than the average UK resident and it's
- 2:08older people who make the most frequent
- 2:10trips to the doctor and with 26% of
- 2:12doctors born outside the UK you are more
- 2:15likely to be treated by an immigrant
- 2:17than meet one in the waiting room we
- 2:19hear a lot about benefit tourism yet
- 2:21only one in 20 immigrants claim out of
- 2:24work benefits half the rate of British
- 2:28people immigrants also help pay for
- 2:31public services through income tax and
- 2:33other taxes such as vat in the long run
- 2:36much lower immigration would almost
- 2:38certainly mean higher taxes for the rest
- 2:40of us or Worse Public
- 2:43Services some people believe that
- 2:45immigration only benefits London because
- 2:48of its opportunities and long history of
- 2:50immigration 40% of the UK's immigrants
- 2:53live there this brings the city both
- 2:56benefits and costs in the end London
- 2:58makes a major 34 billion positive net
- 3:02contribution to UK public
- 3:04finances everyone benefits from a
- 3:07thriving capital city and strong economy
- 3:09and immigrants help that to
- 3:11happen the evidence shows that
- 3:14immigration is overall a good thing for
- 3:16the British economy although there are
- 3:17winners and
- 3:19losers that is also true of other types
- 3:22of economic and social change for
- 3:24example globalization technological
- 3:26change or equal rights for women the
- 3:30question is whether government and
- 3:31policy can limit the negative impacts of
- 3:34immigration and spread the benefits this
- 3:37might take a bit of working
- 3:57out
