- 0:07This is Chandler.
- 0:10He used to have a pretty sweet life. 23
- 0:13years old, tall and handsome, and from a
- 0:16loving family. Thanks in part to his
- 0:19genetics, his birthplace, and his
- 0:22parents' finances, life afforded him
- 0:26endless opportunities.
- 0:28He was in a relationship with a smart,
- 0:31pretty, and supportive girlfriend who
- 0:33even agreed to move to a new state with
- 0:36him. He was buddies with his older
- 0:38brother, and the two of them had plenty
- 0:41of time for online gaming together. He
- 0:44still lived with his parents, but they
- 0:47owned a beautiful 2300 ft home in a
- 0:51quiet neighborhood. Besides, it would
- 0:55just give him that once-ina-lifetime
- 0:57chance to live rentree, save money, and
- 1:00go to school full-time. How could it
- 1:03have been any better?
- 1:06Well, how about a paid internship while
- 1:10his parents pay his tuition? With the
- 1:13little spare time that would allow, he
- 1:16could be a rescue diver for the police
- 1:19and really give back to the community.
- 1:22But why not shoot for the stars? Maybe
- 1:25even literally one day. A job at SpaceX
- 1:30might make that possible. The lofty
- 1:34salary and great benefits would
- 1:36certainly make it possible to plan a
- 1:38nice wedding and maybe start a family.
- 1:41Chandler was really going places.
- 1:45In his mind,
- 1:48this is a man whose full-time job was
- 1:52faking having a full-time job, and it
- 1:56would lead to murder.
- 1:59And this
- 2:00is absolutely criminal.

- 2:19Chandler Halderson lived in Deorest,
- 2:22Wisconsin with his parents Bart and
- 2:24Christa. At 23, that's not remarkable,
- 2:28especially during the global pandemic we
- 2:31must endure. But Chandler wasn't
- 2:33satisfied with unremarkable.
- 2:35He had an alter ego, and he was
- 2:38vicariously successful, talented, and in
- 2:42demand. He lied about his life to
- 2:46everyone he met, whether in the real or
- 2:49virtual world. He had a fake job that
- 2:53seems like it was more work than
- 2:55actually being employed. And he was
- 2:58offered another pretend career that was
- 3:00so lucrative and impressive that his
- 3:03very real girlfriend was willing to give
- 3:06up life near her family and follow him
- 3:09to Florida. He was going to work in the
- 3:11IT department of SpaceX, the Alon Musk
- 3:15headed company that plans to launch a
- 3:17rocket to Mars. Unfortunately,
- 3:21Chandler was no rocket scientist.
- 3:25For reasons unknown, he was dissatisfied
- 3:29with his current life. He felt compelled
- 3:32to lie to family and friends, and in a
- 3:35snowball effect, one deception led to
- 3:38another. Each falsehood had to be more
- 3:41grandiose than the last and eventually
- 3:44ended up with Chandler blasting off to
- 3:48Florida for a prestigious position that
- 3:51paid $80,000 a year. We're just
- 3:55surprised he didn't pay himself six
- 3:58figures. It's kind of like having a
- 4:00lucid dream. When you realize you're in
- 4:02and can take control, as long as you're
- 4:05making [Â __Â ] up, why not fly like a bird
- 4:08over the Grand Canyon instead of just
- 4:10sipping coffee and reading a newspaper?
- 4:14In any event,
- 4:16Chandler's fantasy world would end up
- 4:18having consequences
- 4:20for real people. Each morning, Chandler
- 4:24would wake up and pretend to go to work.
- 4:27With CO wreaking havoc on workplaces,
- 4:31many jobs that once required a commute
- 4:34were now done at home. This made it even
- 4:38easier to take imaginary college classes
- 4:41online. As far as Bart and Christa
- 4:44Halderson knew, they had been paying for
- 4:46their son to attend Madison Area
- 4:49Technical College, or MATC.
- 4:53In fact, Chandler's ruse of a resume
- 4:56boasted an associates degree in
- 4:59information technology. His LinkedIn
- 5:01page contains a snappy little synopsis
- 5:04of his work history, and he really laid
- 5:07it on thick. The majority of my
- 5:10experience consists of lifeguarding and
- 5:12technology, but it doesn't stop there. I
- 5:16have a strong understanding of solar
- 5:18panels and the installation process that
- 5:20goes with them. I also have experience
- 5:23in teaching and leadership from when I
- 5:26was a teacher's assistant for an
- 5:28installation course at a local college.
- 5:30In reality, the majority of his
- 5:33experience consisted of playing video
- 5:35games, facetiming his girlfriend, Cat,
- 5:38and pretending to be an actual person.
- 5:43Whenever a major event in Chandler's
- 5:46life was supposed to happen, something
- 5:49would prevent it. He was a bit like
- 5:52doomsday predictor Harold Camping, who
- 5:55famously prophesied the end of the
- 5:57world. When each date he divined came
- 6:00and went without apocalypse, there would
- 6:03be one excuse or another, then he'd redo
- 6:06the math and prognosticate a new date of
- 6:10doom. In much the same way, Chandler
- 6:14always had a ready excuse so he could
- 6:17hit the snooze alarm on reality and the
- 6:19dreaded day he'd be discovered for what
- 6:22he really was.
- 6:24Anything for a few more days, hours, or
- 6:27even minutes inside his cocoon of
- 6:30concoctions.
- 6:32Chandler created whatever cast of
- 6:34characters was called for by the
- 6:36situation.
- 6:38When he wasn't receiving a paycheck, he
- 6:40set up email accounts for a faux boss, a
- 6:44fictional human resources manager, and a
- 6:47non-existent payroll clerk. All these
- 6:50identities were whipped up to fool his
- 6:52parents and other people in his life,
- 6:54and to get people off his back when the
- 6:57heat was on. His forging skills, as
- 7:00primitive as they were, came in handy
- 7:03when Chandler decided he was going to
- 7:05work at SpaceX.
- 7:07And as you will find out later, these
- 7:10counterfeit communications played a
- 7:12pivotal role in his parents' demise.
- 7:16Then something happened that bought
- 7:18Chandler a little time before his SpaceX
- 7:22start date. His brother was hospitalized
- 7:25for a time and diagnosed with type 1
- 7:28diabetes.
- 7:29Of course, he could postpone the big
- 7:31move for his big brother. It must have
- 7:34given him a mild sense of relief. But
- 7:37one wonders if Chandler had even
- 7:40contemplated an endgame.
- 7:43As his brother began to recover, he knew
- 7:46that the spotlight he kept dodging was
- 7:48about to swing back in his direction. He
- 7:51took that as his cue to manufacture a
- 7:53new lie. One day, his parents were home
- 7:56when they heard a loud thud. Upon
- 7:59investigating, they came upon a crumpled
- 8:01Chandler lying on the ground. He claimed
- 8:04to have fallen down the stairs and
- 8:06knocked his noggin, if that tumble was
- 8:09even true.
- 8:11His claimed injuries were certainly not.
- 8:15Among the consequences of alleged head
- 8:18injury were partial paralysis, an
- 8:22aneurysm, nerve damage, and a spinal
- 8:26injury. Most importantly, under no
- 8:29circumstances would Chandler to travel,
- 8:32whether by car or by plane. Before too
- 8:36long, the doctor told him he would need
- 8:39a colostomy bag. That sounds like a
- 8:42really terrible fall.
- 8:45Supportive as ever, his girlfriend Cat
- 8:48Melinder assured him that even if he
- 8:50didn't get his dream job and whisk her
- 8:52away on fabulous trips, she still wanted
- 8:56to be with him.
- 8:58Other than the murders themselves, it's
- 9:00one of the most heartbreaking parts of
- 9:02this case. It really seemed like she was
- 9:05in love with Chandler. She was excited
- 9:08about starting a new life, but she would
- 9:11have been just fine staying in town.
- 9:15It's a rarity and true crime that we get
- 9:18to hear the exact moment someone's fate
- 9:21is sealed. That's exactly what happened.
- 9:25Bart Holderson was frustrated with some
- 9:28of the excuses made by his son. One was
- 9:31that Chandler could never seem to obtain
- 9:33a transcript from his school to show his
- 9:35dad. For months on end, his son gave him
- 9:38the runaround with false reasons as to
- 9:41why he never received it. So on June
- 9:4329th, Bart called the college and
- 9:46pretended to be Chandler. It saved him a
- 9:49lot of explaining and let him get right
- 9:51down to the point. He was tired of the
- 9:53college dropping the ball and he was
- 9:56going to get to the bottom of it. Thanks
- 9:58to Quality Assurance, that phone call
- 10:01was recorded. Have a listen.
- 10:04I'm trying to get an appointment
- 10:06scheduled to meet with somebody
- 10:09um to maybe just get a copy of a
- 10:12transcript and also a printed copy of a
- 10:15certificate that was earned and and you
- 10:18know other degree verification.
- 10:21How how do how do I get that done?
- 10:24Okay, for the degree, you have to
- 10:28download the duplicate uh diploma form
- 10:31and send it in with a with a check or a
- 10:34money order of $4 for the diploma. For
- 10:36the transcript, you have to go online
- 10:39and request it.
- 10:40Yeah, I tried requesting on online and
- 10:42we never got them and I've spent I don't
- 10:44know how many times doing that at eight
- 10:46bucks a piece. So, I'm not willing to do
- 10:49that again. What? What? Where? Why is
- 10:51not letting you request your Trump
- 10:54group?
- 10:55What is this?
- 10:56It's not my system. It's your system.
- 10:57So, don't ask me questions like that.
- 11:00Bart Holderson was understandably upset.
- 11:04But what he didn't know is that there
- 11:06was no transcript to request. Sure,
- 11:09Chandler went to a few classes a couple
- 11:12of years ago, but there was a debt to
- 11:14pay first. A cloud of confusion still
- 11:17hung over Bart's head. But the skies
- 11:20were beginning to clear.
- 11:22Okay. But I need to establish the
- 11:25problem first before I can know how to
- 11:27like walk you through to get it. Are you
- 11:29buying a computer so I can walk you
- 11:31through on how to get it?
- 11:32I'm going through the process before. I
- 11:35worked with um you know I had I tried to
- 11:38work with Daniel's fight to see if he
- 11:41can get through the information. I don't
- 11:43believe I don't know if he's with you
- 11:44guys anymore, but it just seems like the
- 11:46ball keeps getting dropped.
- 11:48Okay. I mean that's it's pretty easy to
- 11:50request a transcript.
- 11:52That's what I thought too and uh
- 11:54you just go to the
- 11:55hasn't come through.
- 11:56So we have a third party that process
- 11:58it. It's called credentials.
- 12:01Did you talk to credentials?
- 12:05No.
- 12:07Okay. So we have a third party. Uh hold
- 12:11on. Let me look at your account first.
- 12:12Okay.
- 12:14What is your ID number always show so I
- 12:17can access your account? No, I don't
- 12:20have that.
- 12:22Okay. What's your first name? Chandler.
- 12:25C H A N D L E R. Last name is H A L D is
- 12:31in David. E R S O N.
- 12:34Okay. So, it looks like you owe a
- 12:36balance.
- 12:38You owe a balance of 2349.
- 12:41That's why you can't request it.
- 12:44Okay.
- 12:50Now,
- 12:52if you've earned a certificate, say in
- 12:54that solar program,
- 12:59you said where does that get requested
- 13:01through? Have you earned a certificate?
- 13:04Yeah.
- 13:05I don't
- 13:06I don't see that you earned a
- 13:08certificate. Uh you were taking
- 13:13IT classes, right? I don't see that you
- 13:15were in a program
- 13:19prior to the IT.
- 13:22It was a solar program, too.
- 13:25So, I don't see that you were admitted
- 13:27in any program.
- 13:33You said they were, you know, the IT
- 13:36degree is in there, right? No, those are
- 13:38just classes
- 13:40like you general education classes and
- 13:44and then the IT classes.
- 13:47Does the internship from the spring show
- 13:50up in there?
- 13:53Entrance?
- 13:57No.
- 14:00Do those normally show up in there?
- 14:03Yes. If you if the internship is part of
- 14:06the curriculum, yes.
- 14:08Toward the end, the defeated dad began
- 14:11to realize his son had been lying to
- 14:14him. He probably didn't put all the
- 14:16pieces together in his mind, but he
- 14:19sused out the situation well enough to
- 14:21know he had to have a heart-to-heart
- 14:23talk with Chandler. It would cost him
- 14:26his life.
- 14:28Do you know do you have a an Alyssa
- 14:31Brandt that works in that area or
- 14:34anywhere in the campus? Alyssa? Yeah. A
- 14:37L Y S A.
- 14:42No.
- 14:46Okay.
- 14:48How about Does Daniel Spice still work
- 14:50there? S P E I T H.
- 14:56No, it's not. So,
- 15:07okay, that should do it then. Okay,
- 15:09thank you for your help.
- 15:13With the phone conversation concluded,
- 15:16Bart unknowingly set evil in motion when
- 15:20he sent this text to his son. I spoke to
- 15:24Omar Job. Chandler had been
- 15:26impersonating college employees,
- 15:28creating fake emails, and even talking
- 15:31to his own father on the phone at one
- 15:33point, pretending to be a school
- 15:35administrator. All the email addresses
- 15:38for people that worked at the college
- 15:40ended ingmail.com.
- 15:44Had Bart been a little more techsavvy,
- 15:47he might have spotted that detail and
- 15:49realized the communications weren't
- 15:50coming from the school.
- 15:532 days after Bart's telephonic epiphany,
- 15:56he sent what would be the final text to
- 15:59his son. I'm ready when you are. This
- 16:03was in reference to a meeting Bart had
- 16:05set up between himself, Chandler, and
- 16:08Omar Job. Sometime before that meeting,
- 16:11Chandler shot his father in the back
- 16:13multiple times.
- 16:16And so ends July 1st, 2021.
- 16:21On Friday, July 2nd, Christa Halderson
- 16:24was expected to be at work. When she
- 16:27didn't show up and her boss couldn't
- 16:29contact her, co-workers became
- 16:32concerned. Christa took her job very
- 16:36seriously and they knew she would never
- 16:39pull a no call, no show. Something had
- 16:43to be wrong.
- 16:43Did Christa show up for work if you know
- 16:46on July 5th, 2021?
- 16:48No, she did not. It was my day off. I
- 16:50was concerned that she hadn't shown up
- 16:52on the Friday before. I went into work
- 16:54to see if she had come to work and if
- 16:57anyone had heard from her, even though
- 16:58it was my day off,
- 17:00but again, no call, no show that day.
- 17:02No call, no show. I texted her a little
- 17:05before 9:00 when it was apparent that
- 17:07she hadn't shown up. Um, that text was
- 17:10never delivered.
- 17:13Then, presumably to buy himself some
- 17:15time for whatever one does after the
- 17:18stone cold slaying of his own father,
- 17:21Chandler texted his mother
- 17:24asking her to get soda on the way home
- 17:26from work. Her reply, "K, I can smile
- 17:32face."
- 17:34Earlier, Christa had texted her son to
- 17:36tell him she hoped his meeting was going
- 17:38well. supportive and concerned until the
- 17:41end. She certainly couldn't have known
- 17:44that shortly after walking through her
- 17:45front door at 5:12 p.m. requested soda
- 17:50in hand, she would be murdered by the
- 17:53son she'd loved unconditionally since
- 17:56birth.
- 17:58Why the drastic solution to the
- 18:00molehill-sized mountain Chandler made in
- 18:03his mind? Was his girlfriend next?
- 18:07Assuming he hadn't committed the most
- 18:08solvable crime in the history of police
- 18:11work with its extensive electronic
- 18:14documentation, what was his next move?
- 18:17Chandler Halderson was not even close to
- 18:20getting away with it. And as we noted at
- 18:23the top of the show, Chandler's actual
- 18:26life was going pretty well, even with
- 18:29the growing stress of having to keep
- 18:31track of his lies and create new ones.
- 18:34He had a lot of resources at his
- 18:36disposal, human and otherwise. His
- 18:40parents paid for his needs. His
- 18:42girlfriend was ready to pack up and move
- 18:44with him to start a new life, and he had
- 18:47all the time in the world to play video
- 18:49games and hang out with friends. Had he
- 18:51taken time to think it through, he might
- 18:54have come up with a different plan.
- 18:56Sure, Bart and Cristo would have been
- 18:59furious. Their son had been lying to
- 19:02them for years, doing god knows what
- 19:04with the money they'd been shelling out.
- 19:06There was no college degree or fancy
- 19:08job. The gathering from statements made
- 19:10by family and friends. They wouldn't
- 19:13have disowned him, written him out of
- 19:15the will, or even asked him to leave the
- 19:17family home. His girlfriend would
- 19:20probably have been angry and
- 19:21disappointed as well. But isn't it more
- 19:24likely than not she would have forgiven
- 19:26him after the heat of the situation had
- 19:29cooled? His friends would never let him
- 19:32live it down, but after the sting of
- 19:34embarrassment had time to fade, wouldn't
- 19:37they have gotten past it? Of course,
- 19:41Chandler could have dusted off the shame
- 19:44and still had a pretty nice go of it.
- 19:47But here we are, and there were even
- 19:50more stunning developments in the case.
- 19:53More about those later. But first, if
- 19:57you're enjoying Absolutely Criminal and

- 20:06notification bell. Then check out our
- 20:09Patreon exclusives because you don't
- 20:12want to miss a thing. Now, back to our
- 20:15story.
- 20:17Chandler had just murdered the two
- 20:20people responsible for his very
- 20:23existence.
- 20:24It is difficult to imagine the thought
- 20:26process that brought forth this tragedy.
- 20:29He still had the stress of his fake
- 20:31life. But now he had two dead bodies to
- 20:34deal with. By the time he was done with
- 20:36the gruesome task of dismembering his
- 20:39parents, their blood could be found on
- 20:41scissors, pruning shears, hands saw
- 20:44blades, and an axe.
- 20:48When family friend Daniel Croninger
- 20:50stopped by the home for a welfare check,
- 20:53he noticed both cars were still in the
- 20:55driveway and he ran into a freshly
- 20:59showered Chandler Halderson at the side
- 21:01door. He told Daniel his parents went to
- 21:04stay in their cabin for the Fourth of
- 21:06July weekend. They apparently wanted to
- 21:09beat the traffic and left early on that
- 21:11Friday morning. As for Christa and
- 21:14Bart's car still in the driveway,
- 21:17Chandler said his parents carpulled with
- 21:19another couple, but he never did catch
- 21:22their names. Daniel was left concerned
- 21:26and confounded, but accepted the
- 21:28explanation such as it was. It
- 21:32definitely wasn't like the Holdersons to
- 21:34take off on a whim. But maybe they just
- 21:37really needed to get away and unplug.
- 21:39That's what they bought the cabin for
- 21:41after all. It was a place they could go
- 21:44to escape life and enjoy nature.
- 21:48Chandler would go on to tell a similar
- 21:50story to others who inquired about his
- 21:52parents' whereabouts
- 21:54because the people in Chandler land were
- 21:57supposed to believe his parents were
- 22:00away and unreachable.
- 22:02He had to act normal.
- 22:04I'm no toxicologist,
- 22:07but whatever chill pill Chandler took
- 22:09made him appear distant and detached.
- 22:12People would say it was like nothing was
- 22:15behind his eyes or that he was looking
- 22:18past them.
- 22:20He spent the Independence Day holiday
- 22:22with Cat and her mother on the property
- 22:25of her girlfriend, Crest. He knew they
- 22:28had a pool, and Crest thought swimming
- 22:30might be a good therapy for Chandler's
- 22:32injuries. The four of them discussed
- 22:35that for a while. They ate and chatted a
- 22:38while afterward. At about 900 p.m.,
- 22:42Chandler bid Cat and company a due
- 22:44because he was bushed. He wanted to get
- 22:48home to bed. But in this universe,
- 22:52Chandler didn't go to sleep when he got
- 22:54home. He had to continue the work he'd
- 22:58started the night before. On the day he
- 23:01killed his kin, he ran to a local home
- 23:04supply store for a murder cleanup kit.
- 23:08Then the cold-hearted culprit put his
- 23:10parents on ice and began to cut them
- 23:13into pieces. One by one, he incinerated
- 23:17them in the living room fireplace. He
- 23:20stayed up all night, shoving parts of
- 23:23his mom and dad into the fireplace they
- 23:26likely relaxed in front of. The family
- 23:29home was now a pseudo funeral home.
- 23:34A blazing beacon of light could be seen
- 23:37waxing and waning all night from a
- 23:40neighbor's security camera. It is
- 23:42thought he was unprepared for the
- 23:44vigorous nature of the blaze and began
- 23:46to panic when the flames escaped and
- 23:49licked the mantle, bubbling the paint
- 23:51above the fireplace. He likely threw
- 23:54water on the inferno, and a glass panel
- 23:57was shattered by the rapid quenching of
- 23:59the heat. Chandler got a nasty cut on
- 24:02his big toe, now leaving his own blood
- 24:05at the scene.
- 24:09It was the lie he told to his
- 24:11girlfriend, Cat, that was the biggest
- 24:13whopper. She was friends with his
- 24:16parents and even texted and hung out
- 24:18with Christa. She thought it was odd
- 24:21that Mrs. Halderson hadn't called or
- 24:23texted while at the cabin. Cat wanted to
- 24:26text her and asked if everything was all
- 24:29right, but Chandler warned that would
- 24:31only make his mother upset. He said both
- 24:35of his parents were so pissed off about
- 24:37the fireplace that they grounded their
- 24:40adult son. His girlfriend was not
- 24:43allowed to come over and play.
- 24:47Cat likely had the reaction you just
- 24:50did, but she didn't pursue the matter.
- 24:54As you will see later, Chandler has a
- 24:57strange effect, at least post homicide.
- 25:00Virtually everyone that had contact with
- 25:02him after the murders was, for lack of a
- 25:04better description,
- 25:06creeped out by Chandler's demeanor. If
- 25:09he was acting anything like in this
- 25:12police interview, that's understandable.
- 25:15Chandler has the deadpan delivery of a
- 25:17David Blaine, but without all the magic.
- 25:21After a little observation, one begins
- 25:24to suspect there's nothing really there
- 25:26at all. He's like a missing person
- 25:29within himself. He was trying to be calm
- 25:32and cool. A real Mr. Nonchalant.
- 25:36He nailed this. Actually, what he failed
- 25:39to simulate was any concern for his
- 25:42parents that have supposedly been
- 25:44missing for a week or missing since
- 25:47whenever he received the last fake text
- 25:50from them.
- 25:51What's truly chilling is watching this
- 25:55footage knowing what we know now about
- 25:58what Chandler did. Just a week ago, he
- 26:02killed his caregivers in the coldest
- 26:05blood, hacked and sawed them up into
- 26:08still clothed pieces and distributed and
- 26:11disposed of the remains over several
- 26:13days.
- 26:15Enjoy.
- 26:16You understand the rights I just read?
- 26:18I do. Okay. Realizing that you have
- 26:20these rights are you now willing to
- 26:22answer questions or make a statement
- 26:24[Music]
- 26:34just a yes.
- 26:36Yeah. So the second one so I'll just
- 26:38read it again. Realizing that you have
- 26:39these rights are you now willing to
- 26:40answer questions or make a statement?
- 26:42Oh I will make a statement.
- 26:44Okay so you understand them. So
- 26:47yesterday, uh, July 7th, I came to your
- 26:50house, um, where you live with your
- 26:52parents, Bart and Christa, um, Helerson.
- 26:56And, um, the reason I was there is is
- 26:59you had gone to the Windsor Police
- 27:02Department and reported them missing,
- 27:03right?
- 27:04Yes.
- 27:04Okay. Um, we've been following leads
- 27:07last night, um, working today to, you
- 27:10know, go through different things. Um,
- 27:12just trying to locate them, right? Um,
- 27:15so I I guess if you want to start with,
- 27:19let's just go back to to last Wednesday.
- 27:24Um, Wednesday
- 27:26I was with my dad.
- 27:29Weird.
- 27:30What time? Wednesday. I remember it. It
- 27:32was kind of a bad day.
- 27:34Okay. Why was it a bad day?
- 27:37Um,
- 27:38well, my mom had work so she was gone.
- 27:41Um,
- 27:43my dad and I were watching something
- 27:45over lunch. It was u the Wheel of
- 27:48Fortune
- 27:49and we have where normally you have the
- 27:52couch like with our back facing our the
- 27:55table we sat at at the end of you coming
- 27:58downstairs or upstairs
- 27:59downstairs that room with the TV.
- 28:02I tossed the ball and I smashed the
- 28:06glass.
- 28:08Okay. with the dog. The dog's help uh
- 28:11that yeah set my dad off and we tried to
- 28:16clean it up.
- 28:20I don't know about him, but I got
- 28:21injured.
- 28:23Um but he was mad. He didn't really talk
- 28:27to me too much that day. So you guys are
- 28:30were downstairs. Um just to to touch
- 28:33back on that quick. to the couch. So,
- 28:35yesterday when we were down in your
- 28:37basement, the couches were in a bed. I
- 28:40He helped me put them in a bed before.
- 28:43Yeah. Thursday. But they put it into a
- 28:46bed so I could sleep here in the
- 28:48bathroom and the dogs sleep in that
- 28:50floor. So,
- 28:51okay.
- 28:52They'll be a lot better if they're
- 28:54sleeping on that floor.
- 28:55Downstairs floor.
- 28:56Yeah.
- 28:57Just cooler for him or something.
- 28:59Kind of probably.
- 29:00Okay.
- 29:02It's this gross hairy tennis ball that
- 29:05Rizzo loves.
- 29:07Just like a green tennis ball, like a
- 29:08normal
- 29:09Yeah.
- 29:10ball. Okay.
- 29:10The with the squeaker, not not a tennis
- 29:13racket.
- 29:14Chandler certainly delivers a lot of
- 29:17details about irrelevant things, but
- 29:20when it comes to anything to do with his
- 29:22parents, he glosses over things as
- 29:24quickly as possible.
- 29:26Um, it's Thursday morning.
- 29:29[Music]
- 29:30I wake up
- 29:36What time?
- 29:386:00.
- 29:39Okay. Um, help my mom out getting ready
- 29:44in the morning. She She left for work at
- 29:467:30.
- 29:49I got her
- 29:52whatever she had to do.
- 29:59those meaningless tasks like just daily
- 30:04like pillowcase changes and sheet
- 30:07changes and stuff like that. You know,
- 30:09in the morning we went to go do our own
- 30:12things. I went back to a little bit more
- 30:15job searching. This time I branched into
- 30:18Forest instead of just Windsor working.
- 30:21He went back to work. We planned
- 30:25on
- 30:32something went wrong.
- 30:34[Music]
- 30:36Oh, we were
- 30:45I don't know. Something went well for
- 30:46him. So that's all. Um
- 30:52then we just kind of hung out and my mom
- 30:54gets home and I uh start the I start
- 30:59shrimp scampy for my dad cuz that's what
- 31:01he wanted but we didn't have shrimp so I
- 31:04I made shrimpless scampy.
- 31:07That's that's where they told me while
- 31:09we were eating it they they were going
- 31:11to go with their friends and I was like
- 31:13oh cool.
- 31:16Um, well,
- 31:18and they said they were going to the
- 31:20cabin.
- 31:21Yeah, we're going up north. Up north is
- 31:23very hard to
- 31:25Who said that? Mom or dad?
- 31:28My My dad doesn't talk about eats.
- 31:30Okay.
- 31:30Okay. Friday.
- 31:32Yep.
- 31:33I with cat Friday night, I believe.
- 31:36What' you do Friday during the day?
- 31:39Oh, yeah. It's like backwards. Um,
- 31:46I kind of [Â __Â ] the day where I I play
- 31:48video games.
- 31:49Okay. Parents are gone. Why not, right?
- 31:53Yeah. I didn't do anything that I should
- 31:55have. I should have been cleaning and
- 31:57all of that. The morning I'm a little
- 32:00worried about my family.
- 32:03I think I called my mom.
- 32:06Oh, throughout I've called. I I don't
- 32:08know the times though.
- 32:12throughout the weekend, I think. But I
- 32:14call my mom I believe
- 32:16in the morning or along those lines and
- 32:19I get a text from her. All right. So
- 32:21once the cat saw Sunday to eat, what
- 32:23time do you think he went over there?
- 32:28Food at 3:30 is what they said. So about
- 32:313 3:30 you went over to Cats. Oh, I was
- 32:35at Cats well before. I was at their
- 32:37noon. Okay. There's like a little pool
- 32:41up at the press's house.
- 32:43Oh,
- 32:44she's been helping me like my walking
- 32:46and everything and they get me there.
- 32:49Um
- 32:51and then we go to dance.
- 32:53Okay.
- 32:54Um for the fireworks, he asked us to
- 32:56come by 8:30.
- 32:58[Music]
- 33:00Um, for some reason I I was trying to
- 33:02leave, but
- 33:05I was making a a joke about it that we
- 33:08we're going to be late. Like stuff like
- 33:10that. Goofy crap. Uh, I drove to dance.
- 33:13Okay. Which car were you guys in?
- 33:15My dad's Subaru. It's a blue.
- 33:18The one in the garage.
- 33:20Yeah. And then I was like, "Okay, we
- 33:22have to go home for the dogs." So, we
- 33:24went and that was pushing
- 33:309:30, 9:45. Um,
- 33:34we get to bed upstairs in my room. Then
- 33:37it's Monday morning.
- 33:39Cat goes to work
- 33:427:50ish,
- 33:44maybe earlier. Well, at the end of the
- 33:46day on Monday,
- 33:49I did go
- 33:51for the afternoon, I did go to the farm
- 33:55to talk to Crest and Cat's mom.
- 33:59I told him what's happening with my
- 34:01health because I had the appointment at
- 34:032.
- 34:04Did you go to the farm before or after?
- 34:07Because I told them what happened to me
- 34:09and I told them the legs are probably
- 34:12going to be permanent and the headaches
- 34:15should be fixed after the hemorrhage is
- 34:18cleared a little bit. Then I go up
- 34:21to have, you know, break down by their
- 34:25shed and they go swimming. I actually
- 34:29cried.
- 34:30[Music]
- 34:32Started kicking grass,
- 34:35just doing the toddler tantrum [Â __Â ] Um,
- 34:39then I
- 34:41hopped in the water with them.
- 34:42Okay.
- 34:43It was too late. I was in the water and
- 34:46you realized Crest didn't have a top and
- 34:49that was uncomfortable.
- 34:51But I talked to them more and that's
- 34:53when she brought up the housing
- 34:54situation, how she doesn't like how my
- 34:57parents like
- 35:00are. What are we having a breakdown
- 35:01about?
- 35:04You ever have your legs? Yeah. No, it's
- 35:08just okay.
- 35:11I don't even know if they're done eating
- 35:13like as bad as they they can be yet. So
- 35:16that's a
- 35:17that's not fun.
- 35:18And I think you were telling me last
- 35:20night it was it's a symptom of a
- 35:21concussion, right?
- 35:22So is that right?
- 35:23That's not it. That's a It's a symptom
- 35:25of nerve damage from the hit my spine.
- 35:28So permanent.
- 35:29Okay, I understand that. But then
- 35:31they're like, "Well, appreciate you
- 35:34stopping by." So I I I head out. And I
- 35:37go, it was Monday afternoon. I go to
- 35:41dinner at Cat Cat's house on the east
- 35:44side. I think we just eat and puddle a
- 35:48little bit.
- 35:49Did he call or No, no word. My mom I
- 35:53don't know if he called or I think he
- 35:55just contacted. That's what I can think
- 35:57of.
- 35:57Reached out.
- 35:58Yeah, he reached out.
- 36:00Then I'm like, "Oh, it's Tuesday
- 36:01morning. They should be here."
- 36:03Did your dad get injured at all when the
- 36:05glass broke? Did he step on any?
- 36:07He sent me up, but I I don't doubt it.
- 36:12And he gets mad. He's not thinking.
- 36:14So, we don't know if your dad got hurt.
- 36:17No.
- 36:17Okay.
- 36:18No, but my best guess is that guy
- 36:22reached in the fireplace and cut off his
- 36:24arm or something. I don't know.
- 36:28Is there any reason to believe mom or
- 36:30dad's blood would be somewhere in the
- 36:33house? Have they been injured at all
- 36:35that you're aware of?
- 36:37Oh, my dad scratches his psoriasis till
- 36:40he like gushes blood.
- 36:42Okay. Gushing. Describe gushing to me.
- 36:46Enough to run down your leg. Like um
- 36:49like cover your leg, I suppose. Like he
- 36:52has it on his knee.
- 36:54So when he does this, it just like
- 36:58drips down.
- 37:00I ask him to stop, but he doesn't do it
- 37:02when he's stressed out. Yeah,
- 37:04he just kind of like gets his tick.
- 37:07Yeah, probably itches.
- 37:08My mom's blood
- 37:11dumb just from her bloody noses she gets
- 37:14sometimes when she wakes up. That's why
- 37:16we've been doing the dehumidifi or
- 37:19humidifier and dehumidifiers.
- 37:22Yeah, probably downstairs you get the
- 37:25we have to do multiple of them. But she
- 37:28can't be in the living room too long cuz
- 37:30that's a dehumidifier. You know, if she
- 37:32does, her nose gets bad.
- 37:36Not like a regular one. She gets it bad.
- 37:41Um,
- 37:42but she either goes to the kitchen to
- 37:45fix it, her vanity or the bathroom. Um,
- 37:48when she has bloody noses or we talking
- 37:50and it's just spraying around. Is it
- 37:52just
- 37:53Well, it's not squirting, but it's just
- 37:54dripping.
- 37:55She doesn't notice it.
- 37:57Okay.
- 37:57Cuz she can't feel it anymore. Okay. We
- 38:00got all the background, I think. Right.
- 38:02Yeah, I think so.
- 38:03So, I think it's time we start talking
- 38:06about what happened to your parents,
- 38:08like the truthful version.
- 38:10Okay.
- 38:11Okay.
- 38:12So, we have like 20 pages of writing.
- 38:15We're going to start with a clean white
- 38:17piece of paper for you to start telling
- 38:18the truth. Okay?
- 38:19Why? Because listen, listen to me. This
- 38:21is the only chance you're going to have
- 38:23to tell us the truth. Okay? Okay? What
- 38:26we listen? I'm I can't tell you what we
- 38:29know, but we know you're not telling us
- 38:30the truth. We know your parents are no
- 38:32longer with us. Okay? And we know the
- 38:35reason why.
- 38:37Okay? You need to tell the truth.
- 38:38There's Listen, listen. You need to tell
- 38:41the truth about what happened and just
- 38:43tell us why it happened. Okay? If
- 38:47something happened, if you were
- 38:48defending yourself or if you just got
- 38:50fed up with stuff, you need to tell us
- 38:52the truth. Okay? This is your chance to
- 38:55tell us why. Okay. I'm not BSing you.
- 39:00Okay.
- 39:05So, can we do that?
- 39:06Okay. Okay. Um,
- 39:08[Music]
- 39:15what happened?
- 39:17Okay. Can you know what happened? We're
- 39:20not going to tell you what happened. You
- 39:22know what happened. You were there when
- 39:23it happened.
- 39:25We're not BSing you. Okay.
- 39:27When it happened, you know,
- 39:31we know more
- 39:33than you think we know.
- 39:34I understand.
- 39:37There's people that have told us things.
- 39:38We have We have evidence. We have proof
- 39:41that more has happened. Okay.
- 39:45So, your parents never made it to the
- 39:47cabinet. I think you know that.
- 39:53I just have a You want to stand up? This
- 39:55one right over here for me.
- 39:58Get them in your pockets at all. Just
- 40:04[Music]
- 40:08one piece of the puzzle was put in place
- 40:11one month earlier
- 40:13when a friend Chandler met through the
- 40:15online firsterson shooter Call of Duty,
- 40:18Andrew Smith, visited the Holderson
- 40:21home. He drove from Kansas. Although
- 40:24when they first met, Smith was stationed
- 40:26with the US Army in Germany. He's a
- 40:29colorful character and he didn't hold
- 40:32back on the stand.
- 40:34Andrew gifted the Russian SKS rifle to
- 40:37his friend, but that's where his
- 40:40responsibility ended, as you'll hear in
- 40:44his testimony.
- 40:45Um, had you ever been to Wisconsin
- 40:47before?
- 40:47No, sir.
- 40:48Okay. Um,
- 40:50it's a long drive up here.
- 40:52No [Â __Â ] I'm
- 40:54Yes, sir.
- 40:55It's okay. Everyone slips up. We've
- 40:57shown you what's been marked. Let's talk
- 40:59a little bit about, I guess, that time
- 41:00period in which you met Mr. Halderson.
- 41:02Uh, you said you were stationed over in
- 41:03Germany.
- 41:04Yes, sir.
- 41:04Uh, were you in the military?
- 41:05Yes, sir.
- 41:06What branch?
- 41:07Army, sir.
- 41:08Uh, and, uh, where in Germany were you
- 41:10stationed?
- 41:10Ansbach, sir.
- 41:12And, um, whereabout is that?
- 41:15Middle of BF, sir.
- 41:18Uh, and how did you meet someone who
- 41:20lived here in Wisconsin while you were
- 41:22in Germany?
- 41:22Playing video games on Arma 3 server,
- 41:24sir.
- 41:25About what time was this? What year was
- 41:27this?
- 41:28I want to say it was 2019 or 2018. It
- 41:31was shortly after my son was born, sir.
- 41:33Okay.
- 41:34And, uh, how often, if you just had to
- 41:36give us a general overview, how often
- 41:38would you play video games with Chandler
- 41:40online?
- 41:40Almost every day, sir. Okay.
- 41:41And would you be talking and
- 41:43communicating during that time period?
- 41:44Yes, sir. When you came back to the
- 41:46United States, what state did you move
- 41:47to or live in?
- 41:48Kansas, sir.
- 41:49Is that your home?
- 41:50For now.
- 41:51Okay.
- 41:52At some point, you decided to come visit
- 41:54Chandler.
- 41:55Yes, sir.
- 41:56What abouts was that?
- 41:57Sometime during uh I think it was June,
- 41:59sir.
- 42:00Of this past year.
- 42:01Yes.
- 42:02When you visited Wisconsin to see
- 42:03Chandler, you brought him a gift?
- 42:05Yes, sir.
- 42:05What did you bring him?
- 42:06I brought him a 20-in barrel SKS.
- 42:11Um, you know what that document is? Yes,
- 42:14sir. It's a FL transfer paperwork, sir.
- 42:17And you've been saying the the phrase
- 42:18FFL, correct?
- 42:20Yes.
- 42:20What does that mean?
- 42:21That's a federal firearms license
- 42:22holder.
- 42:22Meaning someone who's licensed to to
- 42:24sell firearms and fills out paperwork
- 42:26and does the correct background checks
- 42:28and such.
- 42:28Um, did you document in any way
- 42:30transferring that gun to him?
- 42:31Yes, sir.
- 42:32How did you choose? Did you fill out
- 42:33paperwork like this?
- 42:34I took his uh photo ID that the state
- 42:36issued him and I took it right next to
- 42:38the serial number annotating that this
- 42:39was me giving this weapon to this
- 42:41individual. So that way if anything like
- 42:43this would occur that it wouldn't
- 42:46necessarily come back to me.
- 42:47How did Chandler react when you gave him
- 42:49the gun?
- 42:50Oh, he was happy.
- 42:51What do you mean about how do you know
- 42:52he was happy or how do you how do you
- 42:53know that?
- 42:54Cuz he had a big smile on his face when
- 42:55I had given it to him as a gift. Okay.
- 42:58Um what did you do with what did
- 43:00Chandler do with the gun? Were you able
- 43:01to figure out where he put it in the
- 43:03house?
- 43:03Yeah, he had initially so if you would
- 43:05walk down the flight of stairs in the
- 43:06basement, you would look left. there was
- 43:07like a little wood pile and he had stuck
- 43:09it in the middle section there because
- 43:11it was I understood that they might not
- 43:13be happy about having this firearm. So,
- 43:16but he had told me he was going to be
- 43:17moving soon to do a career in SpaceX in
- 43:20Florida. So, he was just going to take
- 43:22it with him and move out there with it.
- 43:24Um, at some point the Chandler suffered
- 43:26some sort of injury.
- 43:27Yes, sir. As far as I know, he went and
- 43:29uh
- 43:31he went down the stairs and had fell
- 43:33somehow and screwed up his head or his
- 43:36neck.
- 43:38And did that injury, according to
- 43:39Chandler, did that end up impacting his
- 43:41job or anything like that?
- 43:42As far as I knew, he
- 43:45So, it seemed that because of the
- 43:47injury, he wasn't going to be able to
- 43:48take a flight out to Florida to do this
- 43:50SpaceX thing.
- 43:52But other than that, he didn't really
- 43:54explain what was wrong, just that he
- 43:57wasn't going to be able to fly out there
- 43:58and he wasn't able to look at computer
- 44:00screens or anything like that with so
- 44:03much blur on the screen or motion blur.
- 44:05Did Chandler tell you anything about the
- 44:07head injury in terms of specifics about
- 44:08what was going to happen or how?
- 44:10He told me that he would have to wear a
- 44:12neck brace and that they were supposed
- 44:13to drill a hole in his head or something
- 44:15like that to alleviate some sort of
- 44:16pressure.
- 44:17Did you talk to Chandler about his
- 44:19parents being missing?
- 44:20Yes, sir.
- 44:20Um, tell me about those conversations.
- 44:23Well, day one when he told us because he
- 44:25had told me and my friend that he's
- 44:27friends with that I visited when I was
- 44:29down in Texas, he told us that they had
- 44:32been missing. So, we both suggested to
- 44:34him that, hey, if this is really a big
- 44:36concern for you, you might want to
- 44:37contact law enforcement immediately.
- 44:39Okay. What did Chandler say to that?
- 44:41He said, well, they might they might
- 44:42turn up, so I'll just wait a few days.
- 44:44And
- 44:46so, it goes.
- 44:47After that conversation, do you recall
- 44:48having any other conversations with
- 44:50Chandler about his parents being
- 44:51missing?
- 44:51Uh, just think talking about how or
- 44:54where they could have end up at or what
- 44:57was going on with the situation? Was
- 44:59Chandler expressing worry to you or that
- 45:01he was concerned?
- 45:02He seemed concerned. Yes. Okay.
- 45:04Um, you've been cooperative with law
- 45:06enforcement the whole time, haven't you?
- 45:08I'm not going to be a broken piece of
- 45:09glass, sir.
- 45:10Sure. Uh, meaning you'll help if you
- 45:12need to.
- 45:13Yes.
- 45:13Okay. Um, the police in fact visited you
- 45:16down in your where you live at some
- 45:18point.
- 45:18Yes, sir.
- 45:19Um, you when asked have given them
- 45:22access to things like bank records or
- 45:24your phone and things of that sort.
- 45:26Yes, sir.
- 45:26And you've provided photographs whenever
- 45:28you could. Yes, sir.
- 45:29Why was that important to you to assist?
- 45:31Well, to put it bluntly, sir, I served
- 45:34in the army, and I'm not going to get
- 45:35[Â __Â ] for something that I didn't do.
