- 0:00Welcome to this new auto news video.
- 0:03It's from October 5, 2026. Today, we're
- 0:05going to talk about Renault, which
- 0:07finally wants to make more affordable
- 0:09cars, Stellantis, which is accelerating
- 0:10the deployment of its Chinese brand in
- 0:12Europe, a new European law that risks
- 0:14further weakening our automotive
- 0:16industry, and Skoda, which, for the
- 0:18very first time in its history, will
- 0:19finally sell full hybrid cars. I hope
- 0:22that today's topics interest you. If so
- 0:24, I'm counting on you to show it by
- 0:26leaving a like, subscribing for the
- 0:27next ones, and boosting this one if the
- 0:29option appears for you. That's really
- 0:31the most important thing to give more
- 0:33visibility to my channel and my videos.
- 0:35And of course, also by leaving a little
- 0:37comment in which you give your opinion
- 0:38on the news of the day. And we're going
- 0:40to start this video with some good news
- 0:42from Renault, which is preparing an
- 0:44investment plan for France of 10
- 0:46billion euros over the next 5 years. So
- 0:48on paper, this is good news for the
- 0:50French automotive industry, since in
- 0:52recent months we have seen Renault
- 0:53start to diversify its investments in
- 0:55Spain, for example, to produce its
- 0:57future electric cars. But also in South
- 0:59America and Korea. So one might have
- 1:01thought that France would become a bit
- 1:03of a secondary region for Renault. Well
- 1:05, clearly not. France remains at the
- 1:07heart of Renault's investments, which
- 1:09wants to continue investing in its
- 1:11French factories to modernize them, to
- 1:13accelerate its development of electric
- 1:15cars, to make them even better in terms
- 1:17of autonomy and charging time, but also
- 1:19to make them cheaper. So this is good
- 1:21news on two fronts. Good news that is
- 1:23still largely conditional on what
- 1:25happens next year. That's what
- 1:27François Provau, the CEO of the
- 1:28Renault group, announced. Yes, they
- 1:30agree to invest in France. Yes, Renault
- 1:33wants to make cheaper cars. Yes,
- 1:35Renault wants to remain a major French
- 1:37car brand, but it will only do so if,
- 1:39and I quote the CEO of the Renault
- 1:40group, François Provao, the social and
- 1:42industrial context allows it. What you
- 1:44need to know is that in 2027, there
- 1:46will indeed be presidential elections
- 1:48in France, but there are 17 elections
- 1:50in the 27 countries of the European
- 1:52Union next year, including presidential
- 1:54elections in other countries and
- 1:55legislative elections. What is
- 1:57happening is that currently in Europe,
- 1:59there are two major blocs emerging in
- 2:01the automotive industry. The Western
- 2:03bloc, let's say, with France, Spain and
- 2:04the northern countries, which are fully
- 2:06in agreement with accelerating the
- 2:08transition to electric cars. And on the
- 2:10other side, Germany, the eastern and
- 2:12southern countries such as Italy, for
- 2:14example, are much more cautious about
- 2:15electric cars and even want to extend
- 2:17the life of combustion-engine cars
- 2:19considerably. So, in reality, Renault
- 2:21is willing to invest 10 billion euros
- 2:23in France, provided that in the coming
- 2:25years, there is no questioning of this
- 2:27transition to electric cars on a French
- 2:29or European scale and that the context
- 2:31remains favorable to Renault, since
- 2:33Renault is indeed doing well in terms
- 2:34of electric cars. 42%of its
- 2:36registrations in September were fully
- 2:38electric, with the Renault 5 and the
- 2:40Renault Twingo in the top 1. Indeed,
- 2:42Renault is preparing major investments
- 2:44for France in 2027, but they will only
- 2:46really be made if Renault considers
- 2:48that the European context is still
- 2:50largely favorable to it. And speaking
- 2:52of Europe, we are going to talk about a
- 2:54new law that is currently being drafted
- 2:56and prepared by the European Commission
- 2:58that risks further weakening European
- 3:00car brands. Indeed, after a year of
- 3:02waiting, the European Commission has
- 3:04apparently managed to find common
- 3:06ground with the various European car
- 3:08manufacturers on what is called Made in
- 3:11Europe. This is a new regulation that
- 3:13is supposed to give European
- 3:15manufacturers an advantage in Europe
- 3:16and also aims to reduce their
- 3:18dependence on the Chinese automotive
- 3:20industry, particularly with regard to
- 3:22batteries. It took a very long time to
- 3:25more or less finalize this text, and
- 3:27now that it is almost ready, some
- 3:28European automotive giants are
- 3:30realizing that these rules could end up
- 3:32being completely counterproductive,
- 3:33particularly battery manufacturers, and
- 3:35this is no small matter. This is
- 3:38absolutely crucial for the future of
- 3:40European electric cars. For them to be
- 3:42truly independent of Chinese brands, we
- 3:45need to have a strong European battery
- 3:47sector. However, as they are currently
- 3:50written, these M in Europe texts could
- 3:52end up weakening these same battery
- 3:54manufacturers who are nevertheless
- 3:56vital to the future of the industry. In
- 3:59the future, for an electric car to
- 4:00continue to benefit from its country's
- 4:02tax incentives, such as the purchase
- 4:04bonus in France, 70%of its components,
- 4:06including the battery, will have to be
- 4:08manufactured locally. By that, I mean
- 4:11that it must originate in Europe.
- 4:12However, and this is where it gets
- 4:14complicated, in the 6 months following
- 4:15the adoption of this law, in order to
- 4:17comply with these new standards, three
- 4:18of the primary components of the
- 4:20batteries will have to be European. So,
- 4:22for example, these could be the catodes
- 4:24, the anodes, the power management
- 4:25electronics, the battery cells, the
- 4:27electrolytes or even the thermal
- 4:28management elements. So, it's really
- 4:31quite broad. Except that in reality,
- 4:33Europe has, for the moment, not yet
- 4:35built any part of the entire industrial
- 4:38chain that is required. For example,
- 4:41according to a new study commissioned
- 4:43by LAACEA, the association that
- 4:45represents automotive manufacturers and
- 4:47suppliers, certain essential materials
- 4:49may simply not be available in
- 4:51sufficient quantities in Europe before
- 4:532038. This includes, for example, the
- 4:55active materials in battery catodes and
- 4:57anodes. In other words, Europe wants to
- 5:01impose more European content in
- 5:03batteries, while some of these
- 5:04components are currently very difficult
- 5:06, if not impossible, to produce locally
- 5:08in quantity. This problem, according to
- 5:11the CEA, is not only industrial but
- 5:13also economic, since battery cells
- 5:14produced in Europe are currently much
- 5:16more expensive than those manufactured
- 5:18in China. The CEA therefore believes
- 5:20that if the European Commission imposes
- 5:22its rules too quickly, European
- 5:23manufacturers will be forced to work
- 5:25with more expensive batteries, the
- 5:27average price of electric cars will
- 5:29continue to rise and they will simply
- 5:31become increasingly difficult to sell,
- 5:33with the potential result for the
- 5:34European automotive industry. simply
- 5:37fewer cheap electric models for sale,
- 5:39CO2 targets that are harder to achieve
- 5:40and, paradoxically, even more space
- 5:42left to Chinese manufacturers who are
- 5:44already capable of making electric cars
- 5:46with cheap batteries. We have Chinese
- 5:49groups like CATL or Korean groups like
- 5:51LG that supply a large proportion of
- 5:52the batteries used in electric cars and
- 5:54rechargeable hybrids sold in Europe.
- 5:56Even the major European manufacturers
- 5:57remain extremely dependent on their
- 5:59partners. For example, we have
- 6:00Stellantis which planned to have 3 GB
- 6:02battery factories in Europe over the
- 6:04next few years. In the end, two out of
- 6:05three projects have been canceled. The
- 6:07only one that is running is in France
- 6:09and it is not running well. We had
- 6:10Norsvol which worked with Porsche and
- 6:12BMW which went bankrupt before being
- 6:14bought by an American company. So it is
- 6:16no longer really European. We have
- 6:18Vercore, which is supposed to make
- 6:20high-end batteries for Renault,
- 6:21particularly Alpine, but there are
- 6:23quality issues with them, while most of
- 6:25them have heavily invested in NMC
- 6:26nickel-manganese-cobalt batteries. At
- 6:29the same time, the rest of the industry
- 6:31has turned to another technology, LFP,
- 6:33which is much cheaper to produce. So we
- 6:35have European battery manufacturers who
- 6:37are not producing enough in volume to
- 6:39meet potential demand, who are
- 6:41producing at a higher cost than China,
- 6:43a technology that is being heavily
- 6:45promoted, NMC, while the rest of the
- 6:47world is switching to LFP, and key
- 6:48components that simply won't be
- 6:50available until 2038 at the earliest.
- 6:53The text would ultimately be quite
- 6:54counterproductive, especially with a
- 6:56very tight schedule since we are
- 6:58talking about implementation by 2027.
- 7:00The real problem now for Europe,
- 7:02manufacturers, and entire equipment
- 7:03companies is simply to succeed in
- 7:05setting up a battery industry
- 7:07completely independent of China in
- 7:08record time, to make up for 10 years of
- 7:10technological delay compared to China
- 7:12in 1.5 to 2 years. All this while
- 7:15agreeing to sit on a large part of
- 7:16their margin and profitability in order
- 7:18to try to sell them at the same price
- 7:19as the Chinese. It is still looking
- 7:22complicated. Especially since the
- 7:24competition is internal, with
- 7:25Stellentis, for example, which is going
- 7:27to further increase the presence of its
- 7:29Chinese brand in Europe because we have
- 7:31learned that Stellantis will present
- 7:33several new models at the 2026 Paris
- 7:35Motor Show that will be sold in Europe
- 7:37under its Chinese brand Lip Motor.
- 7:41There will be the B03, which will
- 7:42probably be one of the most affordable
- 7:44electric cars on the European market
- 7:46with a range of around 400 km announced
- 7:48as well as WTP, fast charging and lots
- 7:49of on-board technologies for prices
- 7:51that are probably lower than what is
- 7:53available from Renault, for example,
- 7:54with its Renault 5. And then on the
- 7:56other hand, the Lip Motor D19, which
- 7:58will compete with more premium brands.
- 8:01We are talking here about a large 6-
- 8:04seater SUV with zero gravity seats, an
- 8:0680 kWh battery that announces 300 km in
- 8:09100%electric mode before switching to
- 8:11thermal range extenders. New products
- 8:14that will not be presented discreetly
- 8:16since for the first time the Lip Motor
- 8:18stand will be located on the same level
- 8:21at the Paris Motor Show as the rest of
- 8:23the Stellentis group brands. These
- 8:25lenses want to give it more visibility
- 8:27and are counting more and more on it to
- 8:28accelerate its sales in Europe.
- 8:30Speaking of firsts, we're going to talk
- 8:32about Skoda, which for the very first
- 8:33time will be putting full hybrid
- 8:34engines in its cars. Full hybrid is
- 8:37finally coming to Skoda, and it's
- 8:39starting with the Octavia, which will
- 8:40have a real non-rechargeable hybrid
- 8:42engine. The estate and Berlin versions
- 8:45will receive a new hybrid system
- 8:46developed by the Volkswagen group in
- 8:48partnership with the German equipment
- 8:50manufacturer Chefler, which will be
- 8:52available in two power outputs, 136 and
- 8:54170 horsepower. This new system is
- 8:56based on the 4-cylinder 1.5 TSI Evo 2
- 8:58petrol engine combined with two
- 9:00electric motors, an 8-speed automatic
- 9:02transmission and a small 1.6 kWh
- 9:04high-voltage battery. This system
- 9:06allows it to run on 100%electric power
- 9:07at low speeds, especially in town, and
- 9:09then to operate in series or parallel
- 9:11hybrid mode when speed increases. So
- 9:13this is clearly what we call a Toyota
- 9:15hybrid, but with a Skoda twist. The
- 9:18battery is installed under the rear
- 9:20seat, which still allows for between
- 9:21460 and 485 litres of boot space.
- 9:23Depending on the Berlin or Estate body,
- 9:25it is a bit less than the pure
- 9:27combustion version. What's a bit odd is
- 9:29that Skoda started with full hybrid on
- 9:31its large sedan, which is still a car
- 9:33designed more for driving on the road
- 9:35or even on the motorway. And even if in
- 9:38town, a full hybrid Octavia will
- 9:40probably consume much less than a 100%
- 9:42diesel version. On the motorway, with a
- 9:45rather small tank of only 40 L, you
- 9:47risk consuming much more than the
- 9:49diesel versions and, above all, having
- 9:51to stop much more often to fill up. We
- 9:53wonder why Skoda didn't try full hybrid
- 9:56on a slightly more compact model, so
- 9:58that it would really be in line with
- 10:00technology. In the meantime, that's it
- 10:01for today's events. I hope you found
- 10:03the video interesting. That's the case,
- 10:04I'm counting on you as usual to show it
