  24. 1:16five of the listening section Brandy is
  25. 1:18back and ready to guide you on what part
  26. 1:20five entails how you should be taking
  27. 1:22notes and how to avoid errors let's go
  28. 1:25say hello to her
  29. 1:29[Music]
  30. 1:35hi Brandy how are you doing hello I'm
  31. 1:38very well ashwat thank you so much I'm
  32. 1:41surprised that it's already December
  33. 1:42today is the 1 of December and it's a
  34. 1:44beautiful sunny day in Vancouver which
  35. 1:46is unheard of so I'm more than fine and
  36. 1:48happy to be here indeed uh we're also
  37. 1:52I'm also looking forward to go out uh
  38. 1:54sometime soon after work uh I'm really
  39. 1:57excited as well um and I'm also excited
  40. 1:59for this year to be over um so anyway um
  41. 2:04I'm going to let you get started and for
  42. 2:05the people watching if you have
  43. 2:07questions please write it down in the
  44. 2:08comments below and Brandy can answer it
  45. 2:10after her lesson also this episode
  46. 2:13will'll be focusing on not taking so
  47. 2:14please grab a pencil and a sheet of
  48. 2:16paper Brandy you're up okay I'm going to
  49. 2:19share my screen everybody so just give
  50. 2:20me a moment to do that
  51. 2:27please okay
  52. 2:35okay so we are here to do uh some more
  53. 2:37listening practice and we're going to
  54. 2:39focus specifically on listening part
  55. 2:41five of the cell pit test which will ask
  56. 2:43you to watch a video and listen to a
  57. 2:46discussion so before we actually watch
  58. 2:49that video together today I just wanted
  59. 2:51to outline a couple of things that I
  60. 2:52thought were helpful to know about the
  61. 2:54cell pip listening test so first of all
  62. 2:57there are six different parts to the
  63. 2:59listening section
  64. 3:00and every part you complete you're only
  65. 3:03ever going to hear the audio passage
  66. 3:05once you can't pause it and you can't
  67. 3:08replay it you hear it once and once only
  68. 3:11and it's really important to know that
  69. 3:13the questions you're going to answer
  70. 3:14will come after the audio has finished
  71. 3:17playing so what this means then is that
  72. 3:20you're going to need to develop a really
  73. 3:22efficient way to take some short notes
  74. 3:24as you're listening because you'll refer
  75. 3:27back to your notes when it comes time to
  76. 3:29answer the question s on the test itself
  77. 3:31so that's what we are going to practice
  78. 3:32today we're going to practice our
  79. 3:34note-taking skills now when you take the
  80. 3:37actual sell pip test the test
  81. 3:38administrators will give you paper and
  82. 3:41pen so that's what you're going to use
  83. 3:43to take notes in the testing center from
  84. 3:45home today I'm hoping you've got your
  85. 3:47own notepad in pen handy so that you can
  86. 3:49practice these skills one last thing
  87. 3:52that I think it's really important to
  88. 3:53note is that the passages on the
  89. 3:56listening test will get increasingly
  90. 3:58more challenging as as the test
  91. 4:00progresses so the length of the video
  92. 4:03will be a little bit longer as you go
  93. 4:05you'll also have probably some higher
  94. 4:07level vocabulary words and even the
  95. 4:10questions themselves will require a
  96. 4:12little bit more critical thinking to
  97. 4:14complete successfully so remember we are
  98. 4:16completing section five of the listening
  99. 4:19test today out of six so what that means
  100. 4:21is that today's episode is going to be a
  101. 4:24little bit more challenging than perhaps
  102. 4:26other episodes you've tuned into so it
  103. 4:28will be a good way to practice ractice
  104. 4:29our skills and to see how we can do with
  105. 4:31our notetaking so with part five
  106. 4:34specifically it's the only part of the
  107. 4:37cell pip listening test where you're
  108. 4:38going to watch a video as you listen to
  109. 4:41a discussion unfolding there will always
  110. 4:44be three people talking and they're all
  111. 4:46going to have a different opinion on the
  112. 4:49topic that's being discussed so it's
  113. 4:51your job to really focus in and identify
  114. 4:53how each person feels about that topic
  115. 4:57remember you're only going to see this
  116. 4:58video and hear it once and it will be
  117. 5:01anywhere from a minute and a half to 2
  118. 5:03minutes in length the video we'll be
  119. 5:06watching today is about 2 minutes long
  120. 5:08total after the video finishes you will
  121. 5:11have around eight questions to answer
  122. 5:14and they're all going to appear on one
  123. 5:16screen and you'll use the little drop-
  124. 5:18down arrows to open up the answer
  125. 5:20choices so they're essentially multiple
  126. 5:22choice type questions and I'll show you
  127. 5:24what they look like very
  128. 5:26shortly so before you actually watch the
  129. 5:29video on the cell pit test itself you
  130. 5:31are going to have a little H statement
  131. 5:34that introduces what you're about to see
  132. 5:36right on the test and this is what
  133. 5:38you're looking at right now in this blue
  134. 5:40box on your screen so this was a real
  135. 5:42listening question from a past cell pip
  136. 5:45test so I'll read it out loud so we all
  137. 5:47have a sense at least of what we'll be
  138. 5:48watching shortly this one says that you
  139. 5:51will watch a discussion between three
  140. 5:54people at a cafe they all belong to a
  141. 5:57conversation Club where some members are
  142. 5:59are improving their English and some are
  143. 6:02improving their French okay so you know
  144. 6:05this information before you even watch
  145. 6:07the video
  146. 6:08itself now because you know that part
  147. 6:11five will always ask you to listen to
  148. 6:13opinions from three different speakers I
  149. 6:16would recommend strongly that you create
  150. 6:18a note that looks something like this in
  151. 6:20fact you can do this at home right now
  152. 6:22if you want to practice so by creating a
  153. 6:24chart and just labeling it with person
  154. 6:27one two and three at the top we're now
  155. 6:29ready to start writing down the key
  156. 6:31ideas that each person shares as we
  157. 6:34watch that video okay so again feel free
  158. 6:36to use this chart or if you've got your
  159. 6:38own method of note taking that's
  160. 6:40perfectly fine you'll notice that at the
  161. 6:42bottom of this chart I just summarized
  162. 6:44the information that the test
  163. 6:45instructions gave us so we already know
  164. 6:48that this is happening in a cafe it's a
  165. 6:51conversation club and the participants
  166. 6:53are practicing English and French okay
  167. 6:56again we got that right from the test
  168. 6:58instructions now you need to write that
  169. 7:00information down if you don't want to
  170. 7:02but you should at least be tucking it up
  171. 7:04here in your memory as you listen to the
  172. 7:06uh the audio itself now a word about
  173. 7:09note taking not taking skills can be
  174. 7:11tricky because they're very subjective
  175. 7:14they're very individual each of us is
  176. 7:16going to have our own style to take
  177. 7:18notes and that's okay there's not really
  178. 7:20a right or wrong way to do this as long
  179. 7:23as your notes make sense to you because
  180. 7:25you're the one that's going to need
  181. 7:27those notes to answer the questions I I
  182. 7:29think though because the dialogue is
  183. 7:31quick it's it's long it's 2 minutes
  184. 7:34you're not going to have time to write
  185. 7:36down full words and you're certainly not
  186. 7:39going to have time to write full
  187. 7:40sentences I wouldn't even try that
  188. 7:42myself I would recommend that you find
  189. 7:45some sort of short forms or
  190. 7:47abbreviations and symbols so for example
  191. 7:50if the discussion is around money it's
  192. 7:53nice to throw down a really quick dollar
  193. 7:54sign on the page if the amount of
  194. 7:57something is increasing you can draw an
  195. 7:59arrow pointing up and so on you get the
  196. 8:01point so find out short forms that work
  197. 8:04for you just remember what they mean
  198. 8:06when you read your notes back we're
  199. 8:08going to use Point form or at least I'm
  200. 8:10going to and I'll show you what my notes
  201. 8:12look like later so Point form is just
  202. 8:14again when you write down the keywords
  203. 8:16or the specific details using these
  204. 8:18shorten forms and you're just going to
  205. 8:20list them in the columns on the chart
  206. 8:23itself because part five has a video
  207. 8:25you'll also want to keep one eye on the
  208. 8:28screen so to speak as you taking your
  209. 8:29notes because you might see some facial
  210. 8:32expressions and some body language that
  211. 8:34will help you identify how the People
  212. 8:36speaking are feeling all right so
  213. 8:38there's a lot of information to gather
  214. 8:40from this part five so again hopefully
  215. 8:43by now if you're wanting to practice
  216. 8:45you've got some sort of chart or at
  217. 8:46least a note ready to go we're going to
  218. 8:49watch the video here and after it's
  219. 8:51finished playing I'm going to show you
  220. 8:53my notes and we can compare what you've
  221. 8:55come up with and what I've come up with
  222. 8:57again our notes will probably look very
  223. 8:59different and that's okay there isn't a
  224. 9:01right or wrong way as I mentioned but
  225. 9:04we'll hopefully agree at least on what
  226. 9:06the important pieces were in the
  227. 9:08dialogue itself all right so let's watch
  228. 9:10the video now it is two minutes and you
  229. 9:12can practice taking notes as you're
  230. 9:15able well that was a good session eh all
  231. 9:1824 members present eight conversation
  232. 9:20groups of three a full house howd It Go
  233. 9:23for you Diane our group spoke French for
  234. 9:25more than half the time 40 minutes of
  235. 9:27French and 20 minutes of English but
  236. 9:29hey I'm not complaining I need all the
  237. 9:31French I can get hey your French is just
  238. 9:33as good as mine keep practicing a few
  239. 9:35more weeks and you'll sound like
  240. 9:37Nicholas here and remember it's even
  241. 9:39harder for the alphones here I mean
  242. 9:41they're learning a third language alfon
  243. 9:43they're people whose first language
  244. 9:45isn't English or French like Marta she's
  245. 9:48an alfone she grew up speaking Ukrainian
  246. 9:51then she learned English and now she's
  247. 9:53trying to pick up French Marta was in my
  248. 9:55group she's amazing her French is way
  249. 9:57better than mine she said your friend
  250. 9:59wants to join well that makes six new
  251. 10:01members who want to join and they're all
  252. 10:03alones problem is we can't ask people to
  253. 10:06start bringing their own chairs maybe we
  254. 10:08need to look at a bigger restaurant I
  255. 10:10think we should just limit the
  256. 10:11membership to 24 can't we start a wait
  257. 10:13list there's enough turnover Colleen and
  258. 10:16Liam are going back to Germany next week
  259. 10:18the thing is if you put prospective
  260. 10:20members on a wait list they might just
  261. 10:22join a different Club I know from
  262. 10:24working at the community center weight
  263. 10:25list of unreliable you can have six
  264. 10:28people on a wait list when you call them
  265. 10:30none of them are interested anymore so
  266. 10:33when people ask to join we should let
  267. 10:34them in right away how about meeting at
  268. 10:37a separate location on different nights
  269. 10:38well if all the new members are alfon
  270. 10:40maybe we should change the format right
  271. 10:42now each conversation group has one
  272. 10:44native English speaker one native French
  273. 10:46speaker and one alfone but maybe in the
  274. 10:49new location it should just be for alep
  275. 10:51no we need to mix them in with native
  276. 10:53speakers like we're doing now the alones
  277. 10:55kind of inspire the others by their
  278. 10:58example and they great translators for
  279. 11:00the next little while we'll just have
  280. 11:02some groups with three and some groups
  281. 11:04with four until we get more native
  282. 11:06speakers in we'll need to find a second
  283. 11:08location for a meetup on Alternate
  284. 11:10nights some people can meet on Tuesdays
  285. 11:12and Saturdays the new group could meet
  286. 11:14Wednesdays and
  287. 11:24Sundays all right so this is what my
  288. 11:27notes look like and I'm guessing they
  289. 11:30are a little different than yours what
  290. 11:31I'd like to do is just quickly walk you
  291. 11:34through my train of thought and my
  292. 11:37thought process here to see again if
  293. 11:39you've got the same ideas that you
  294. 11:40pulled out of that dialogue so we'll
  295. 11:43start with the introduction to who these
  296. 11:45people are and you notice in the
  297. 11:47headings at the top of my chart beside
  298. 11:49person one two and three I wrote down
  299. 11:51the letters m w and M and that just
  300. 11:54stands for man woman man I didn't know
  301. 11:57if there were going to be people's names
  302. 11:59in introduced so I just wanted to keep
  303. 12:01these people straight in my own mind so
  304. 12:03that's what those letters mean to me now
  305. 12:05the first man person one he starts the
  306. 12:08whole dialogue by suggesting or
  307. 12:10introducing that there are 24 people
  308. 12:12already involved in this conversation
  309. 12:14Club so we're looking now at the top
  310. 12:17left corner of the notes moving across
  311. 12:20to the the second person we understand
  312. 12:23her name is Diane so she wants to learn
  313. 12:26French that's her her excitement she's
  314. 12:28there specifically to develop her French
  315. 12:30skills so that's what the f in bracket
  316. 12:32stands for to me now the third man or
  317. 12:35the third person I guess was introduced
  318. 12:37as Nicholas so I wrote down his name
  319. 12:39just as a point of reference for later
  320. 12:42so once we know who these people are and
  321. 12:44what they're doing it's Nicholas that
  322. 12:46really gets the conversation started so
  323. 12:49looking under his column in person three
  324. 12:51he introduced the term alones and I
  325. 12:55decided to write that entire word down
  326. 12:57instead of using a short form
  327. 12:59because it might be a new vocabulary
  328. 13:01word that I'm not super familiar with so
  329. 13:04I worried if I wrote a short form I
  330. 13:06would forget that word later so I did
  331. 13:08decide to take the extra second and
  332. 13:10write the entire word for that part and
  333. 13:13he started to explain or Define that
  334. 13:16word and I was having a hard time
  335. 13:17keeping up with the note taking because
  336. 13:19it was quick so what I decided to do
  337. 13:21then is use the example of the alfone
  338. 13:24that he gave us so he talked about a
  339. 13:27woman named Marta who's part of this
  340. 13:29conversation club and he says that she
  341. 13:31speaks Ukrainian as her first language
  342. 13:34so that's what the ukr stands for to me
  343. 13:37and I underlined it to remind myself
  344. 13:39that that's her first language and of
  345. 13:42course she's also in this club to
  346. 13:43practice her English and French skills
  347. 13:46so when I look at that example of Marta
  348. 13:48I understand that that's what an alfone
  349. 13:51is it's somebody whose first language is
  350. 13:53not English or French so again using
  351. 13:56that example to me at least was helpful
  352. 13:58to understand that term I might be asked
  353. 14:01later something to do with alones so I
  354. 14:03need to make sure I understand that word
  355. 14:05now we're going to follow my arrows here
  356. 14:07as a TR a train of thought so after
  357. 14:10Nicholas introduces Marta Diane speaks
  358. 14:14up quite excitedly she says that Marta
  359. 14:16was in her particular group for the
  360. 14:18conversation club and she compliments
  361. 14:21Marta's ability to speak French so
  362. 14:23that's what the little check mark beside
  363. 14:25the F FR stands for to me means that
  364. 14:27she's got strong speaking uh skills in
  365. 14:30French and Marta also wants to invite a
  366. 14:32friend to join this conversation club
  367. 14:35now the first man that spoke we never do
  368. 14:37know his name so I'll just call him man
  369. 14:40one man one reacts quite strongly to
  370. 14:43that and he says that there are now six
  371. 14:45people wanting to join this club and he
  372. 14:47wonders then if they need to find a
  373. 14:50bigger restaurant in order to
  374. 14:52accommodate the entire Club so following
  375. 14:55our Arrow back over to Nicholas there in
  376. 14:57the bottom of his column under person
  377. 14:59three Nicholas disagrees with that first
  378. 15:02man Nicholas doesn't want these people
  379. 15:05to join the club he thinks that we
  380. 15:07should limit the number of people and
  381. 15:09create a weight list to keep those
  382. 15:11numbers the same Diane actually
  383. 15:15disagrees with Nicholas I've written
  384. 15:17there
  385. 15:18xwl and that means no weight list she
  386. 15:21doesn't want to weit list instead she
  387. 15:24suggests having a new location so that
  388. 15:27word local to me presents a short form
  389. 15:29for location so she wants this new
  390. 15:32location perhaps on a different night
  391. 15:34she says to accommodate these newcomers
  392. 15:36if they want to join we're back to
  393. 15:39Nicholas now and he says well if we have
  394. 15:41this new location he questions if we
  395. 15:44should only invite the alones to join
  396. 15:46that and then we're back over to the
  397. 15:49first man he finishes the conversation
  398. 15:51by disagreeing he says no I think we
  399. 15:53should actually mix the alones and the
  400. 15:56native speakers together and he ends
  401. 15:59conversation by agreeing with Diane's
  402. 16:01point he says they should find a second
  403. 16:03location for this conversation club and
  404. 16:06even have a different evening for the
  405. 16:08newcomers to join so he suggested this
  406. 16:10schedule of Tuesday Saturday and
  407. 16:13Wednesday Sunday so those were the main
  408. 16:16points that I gleamed from that the
  409. 16:18audio itself it did go quickly so I did
  410. 16:21my best to keep up you may have other
  411. 16:23details that I've missed and if so
  412. 16:25you're very welcome to rate them into
  413. 16:26that live chat feed you can look at them
  414. 16:28later
  415. 16:29but I'm hoping that you've at least got
  416. 16:31the sense of what this conversation is
  417. 16:33about and about every person's Viewpoint
  418. 16:35regarding that
  419. 16:37topic so we're going to practice
  420. 16:39answering two questions from this test
  421. 16:41based on that audio that we've just
  422. 16:43heard and talked about before we do that
  423. 16:45it's a really nice idea to understand
  424. 16:47that there are three different types of
  425. 16:49questions that you might be answering on
  426. 16:51the cell pip test so you might be asked
  427. 16:54a general meaning type question and this
  428. 16:56will always focus on the big picture
  429. 16:59ideas so things like the the main
  430. 17:01subject of the entire dialogue that
  431. 17:03would be a typical General meaning
  432. 17:05question the specific information
  433. 17:08questions will focus very narrowly on
  434. 17:12one detail it might be one person's
  435. 17:14opinion about the subject matter being
  436. 17:16talked about for example and then those
  437. 17:19inference questions they can be a little
  438. 17:21tricky because inference questions will
  439. 17:23not give you the answer specifically in
  440. 17:26the dialogue you have to think about
  441. 17:29what you've learned based in this case
  442. 17:31on what you've seen in the video and
  443. 17:33what you've heard the people speak about
  444. 17:35to choose the best answer from the list
  445. 17:37itself you're drawing conclusions you're
  446. 17:39almost playing detective a little bit to
  447. 17:41put the clues together and come up with
  448. 17:43the answer so sometimes when you know
  449. 17:45what type of question you're being asked
  450. 17:47it will actually help you determine the
  451. 17:49correct answer as you're going to see
  452. 17:51right now so this is the first of two
  453. 17:53questions that we'll practice together
  454. 17:55today this first question reads what is
  455. 17:58the main topic being discussed and as
  456. 18:01you can tell right off the top this is
  457. 18:03certainly a general meaning question a
  458. 18:05broad topic so here are your answer
  459. 18:08choices you've got what to learn where
  460. 18:11to meet whether to grow and whom to
  461. 18:15invite so I'm going to give you about
  462. 18:17five seconds to quickly make your your
  463. 18:20choice at home you can type it into the
  464. 18:21live feed if you want but is there an
  465. 18:24obvious answer jumping out at you based
  466. 18:26on your notes
  467. 18:29right and you can continue to think on
  468. 18:31that as we walk through the answer we're
  469. 18:33going to talk about it to arrive at the
  470. 18:35best
  471. 18:36answer so even before we look at our
  472. 18:38notes I'm going to recommend that we can
  473. 18:40easily eliminate the first answer what
  474. 18:43to learn remember those testing
  475. 18:45instructions they told us that these
  476. 18:47speakers were joining a conversation
  477. 18:49Club to practice their French and
  478. 18:51English so we already know what they're
  479. 18:54learning before the dialogue even begins
  480. 18:56they're not debating what they're going
  481. 18:58to learn in the discussion so let's just
  482. 19:00eliminate answer a from our
  483. 19:02consideration right off the top so we're
  484. 19:05narrowing down our selection we're left
  485. 19:07with where to meet whether to grow or
  486. 19:10whom to invite now I remember hearing
  487. 19:13information about all three of these
  488. 19:15details so let's go back to the notes
  489. 19:17that we've made you can look at your
  490. 19:18notes at home too if you'd like and that
  491. 19:21answer be focused on where to meet so at
  492. 19:24a very quick glance here on my notes I
  493. 19:28do notice that each person does mention
  494. 19:31a
  495. 19:32location so I guess if it's a big topic
  496. 19:36idea I am looking for where people are
  497. 19:38all sharing ideas about one topic so B
  498. 19:42might make sense but when I look at
  499. 19:44answer C whether to grow and I go back
  500. 19:48to my notes what I'm noticing is that
  501. 19:51each time a a new location is suggested
  502. 19:54it's because it's a reaction to whether
  503. 19:56or not newcomers are going to join the
  504. 19:58conversation Club so remember how that
  505. 20:01first man says that six new people want
  506. 20:03to join so this is why he says they
  507. 20:05might need the bigger restaurant in the
  508. 20:07first place Nicholas disagrees right off
  509. 20:10the top with that man and he says no
  510. 20:12these people can't join we need to limit
  511. 20:14the numbers Diane disagrees with
  512. 20:17Nicholas she says no weight lists don't
  513. 20:20work we should have a new location on a
  514. 20:23different night and last but not least
  515. 20:25that first man actually suggests a new
  516. 20:27location and schedule he's agreeing with
  517. 20:30Diane so it's looking to me like answer
  518. 20:33C is much more logical as that big
  519. 20:35picture idea the main topic so this is
  520. 20:38not really about where they're going to
  521. 20:39meet it's discussing more about whether
  522. 20:41new people should join or not now I'm
  523. 20:44pretty sure that's my answer but I like
  524. 20:46to be very thorough if I've got the time
  525. 20:48on a test so we can quickly consider
  526. 20:51answer D whom to invite I do remember a
  527. 20:54few instances where they were talking
  528. 20:55about who should be in this new club so
  529. 20:58Nicholas talks about maybe having alones
  530. 21:01only in this new location if they open
  531. 21:03it and that first man says no we should
  532. 21:06mix the alones and native
  533. 21:08speakers so looking at this information
  534. 21:11I see Diane's not weighed in at all
  535. 21:13she's not offered any ideas about who
  536. 21:15should actually be in the club itself so
  537. 21:18I would consider who to invite as a
  538. 21:21specific detail discuss between these
  539. 21:23two men and specific details are not
  540. 21:26what we're looking for here we're
  541. 21:27looking for the main topic so WEA to
  542. 21:30grow just makes a lot more sense when
  543. 21:31you look at the the number of times it
  544. 21:33was discussed and all the different
  545. 21:35opinions from all the speakers in the
  546. 21:37dialogue itself it's really lending its
  547. 21:39hand to say that this is the main topic
  548. 21:41of the entire piece so we're going to
  549. 21:43select whether to grow and move
  550. 21:46on here's the second and final practice
  551. 21:49question we'll do together today so this
  552. 21:51one says what best describes the woman's
  553. 21:54attitude to Marta so this is an
  554. 21:58inference question I know that right
  555. 22:00away because of the language in the
  556. 22:01question when it says what best
  557. 22:04describes what that means to us as
  558. 22:06readers is that we have to look at our
  559. 22:08answer choices and pick the the most
  560. 22:11accurate depiction of the attitude so
  561. 22:14the answers here are admiration Envy
  562. 22:17gratitude and Scorn so we have to think
  563. 22:20back to what Diane the woman was saying
  564. 22:23about Marta and we can also consider
  565. 22:25what her facial expressions in the
  566. 22:27dialogue as she spoke were telling us if
  567. 22:29we can
  568. 22:30remember so looking at her notes I'm
  569. 22:32looking at Diane's column which is in
  570. 22:34the middle and Diane did pay a
  571. 22:36compliment to Marta I wrote that down
  572. 22:39she actually thinks that Marta's French
  573. 22:41speaking skills are very very strong so
  574. 22:44that's the only detail I've recorded
  575. 22:46here so when I come back to the answer
  576. 22:49choices what I'm going to do right now
  577. 22:51is I'm going to eliminate any negative
  578. 22:54reactions to Marta because clearly if
  579. 22:57Diane is is complimenting Marta on
  580. 23:00strong ability she has a positive
  581. 23:03attitude towards the woman so we're
  582. 23:05going to eliminate from the list Envy
  583. 23:08Envy is somewhat of a negative emotion
  584. 23:10when you're envious about somebody you
  585. 23:13want what they have so badly that you're
  586. 23:15almost feeling frustrated or sad for
  587. 23:17yourself that you don't have those
  588. 23:19things so that's a negative emotion and
  589. 23:21that doesn't make sense based again on
  590. 23:23Diane's body language and facial
  591. 23:25expression and her words in the dialogue
  592. 23:28in the same fashion we can also
  593. 23:30eliminate scorn when you're scornful
  594. 23:33you're extremely angry or upset at
  595. 23:35somebody about something and Diane was
  596. 23:38not upset at all with Marta so we're
  597. 23:40left with two positive emotions they are
  598. 23:43admiration and
  599. 23:46gratitude and when I consider answer C
  600. 23:48their gratitude I know that when you're
  601. 23:50grateful you're showing thanks about
  602. 23:53something and as much as
  603. 23:55Diane uh spoke highly of of Marta's
  604. 23:58French abilities she she wasn't going
  605. 24:01over the top with thanks and gratitude
  606. 24:04she wasn't grateful that Marta was there
  607. 24:06so to me that's not the best answer here
  608. 24:09I think based on what we've heard from
  609. 24:12Diane herself using her words and also
  610. 24:14what we saw in that video with her body
  611. 24:16language and facial expressions I would
  612. 24:18suggest that admiration is the closest
  613. 24:20depiction of her attitude she admires
  614. 24:22Marta very much for her ability to speak
  615. 24:24French so we'll choose answer a and move
  616. 24:28on with the rest of the
  617. 24:30test so to summarize I guess some of the
  618. 24:32strategies that we've used today that
  619. 24:34should be helpful in the future we have
  620. 24:36to know that this video and the audio is
  621. 24:38going to play only once so it's really
  622. 24:42important to take notes while we're
  623. 24:43listening because we don't yet know what
  624. 24:45types of questions we'll have later so
  625. 24:47we're trying our best to write those
  626. 24:48things down use short forms as much as
  627. 24:52you're able focus on those keywords use
  628. 24:54symbols you can draw arrows between the
  629. 24:57points if that helps you I know arrows
  630. 24:59for me I couldn't have done this
  631. 25:01question if I hadn't have drawn my road
  632. 25:02map so for me that's a good technique
  633. 25:04you can find your own technique whatever
  634. 25:06works for you again try to keep in mind
  635. 25:09those facial expressions and the tone of
  636. 25:11voice Etc as you're watching the
  637. 25:13video and remember that these questions
  638. 25:15will come next there will be around
  639. 25:17eight of them so in both cases today I
  640. 25:20think knowing the type of question we
  641. 25:22were being asked was helpful so
  642. 25:25understanding that that first question
  643. 25:26was a general meaning question because
  644. 25:28it talked about the main topic it really
  645. 25:31helped us select between two plausible
  646. 25:33answer choices we were looking for what
  647. 25:35all people were discussing and sharing
  648. 25:37opinions about that second question we
  649. 25:40did today knowing it was an inference
  650. 25:42question also helped us weigh in the
  651. 25:44evidence so looking at Diane's words and
  652. 25:47her body language helped us determine
  653. 25:49that she admired Marta very
  654. 25:51much so once we got all these skills
  655. 25:54Under Wraps we're going to look at the
  656. 25:55answer choices and select the best one
  657. 25:58for the list in some cases you can
  658. 26:00eliminate answers that don't make any
  659. 26:02sense and we did that today for both
  660. 26:05practice questions from those four
  661. 26:07answer choices if you could at least
  662. 26:09narrow it down to two answers that
  663. 26:11you're considering you have a much
  664. 26:13better chance of guessing or answering
  665. 26:15those questions
  666. 26:16correctly if you're still not sure or if
  667. 26:19time is running really low if you've got
  668. 26:21say three questions to answer and you've
  669. 26:23only got one minute left you might just
  670. 26:25have to do some guessing but I encourage
  671. 26:28to fill something in even if you're
  672. 26:30taking a wild guess and you select
  673. 26:32something uh it's better than leaving it
  674. 26:34blank you will never lose marks for a
  675. 26:36wrong answer you might just get lucky
  676. 26:38and you might guess it correctly and get
  677. 26:40the point for that question so that's uh
  678. 26:42your last resort strategy I suppose on a
  679. 26:45test so I'll leave it at that for now
  680. 26:48I'll stop sharing my screen right now
  681. 26:49and if you've got any questions then I
  682. 26:51will do my best to answer those today so
  683. 26:54I'll open it back over to RW to see if
  684. 26:56you've got any questions or coms
  685. 26:58comments or
  686. 27:00concerns thank you for that presentation
  687. 27:03um lots of activity in the chat here um
  688. 27:06people have been guessing
  689. 27:09right so that's a good thing hey
  690. 27:13excellent um we do have questions so the
  691. 27:15first question is uh was a little bit
  692. 27:18earlier uh in our presentation is it a
  693. 27:20good idea to make notes for every part
  694. 27:23in the listening
  695. 27:24section if you were superum and you had
  696. 27:27the ability to make notes for every part
  697. 27:29I'd say sure uh but given it's a
  698. 27:32two-minute question and we only can
  699. 27:34write as quickly as our hand will allow
  700. 27:36um I don't think it's possible for
  701. 27:38anyone really to write down every single
  702. 27:41idea as much as we wish we could so part
  703. 27:44of the challenge really with these
  704. 27:45listening activities especially in the
  705. 27:48second half of the listening test so
  706. 27:50Parts four five and six will be longer
  707. 27:52and noticeably more challenging so we
  708. 27:55have to become very equi at picking out
  709. 27:59details that we determine are important
  710. 28:02and letting go some of the other details
  711. 28:04that we don't think are all that
  712. 28:06important that we don't need to know all
  713. 28:08right so again when you remember back to
  714. 28:10my notes I know I don't have them on the
  715. 28:11screen but in my chart the first thing I
  716. 28:13wrote in the top left corner under man
  717. 28:16one he started talking and he said we've
  718. 28:18got 24 people in the club so I just
  719. 28:20jotted down 24 people you know we didn't
  720. 28:23need that information today it's
  721. 28:25probably not that important how many
  722. 28:27people are in the club now but don't
  723. 28:28know these things so again it's a
  724. 28:30balance between what you think is
  725. 28:31important and what you have time to
  726. 28:33write down so even though that detail
  727. 28:35might not be the most important it took
  728. 28:37me all of a second to write down a
  729. 28:38number 24 right some of the details
  730. 28:41though and again the more you take a
  731. 28:43test or or do some practice you develop
  732. 28:46almost an instinct to sort of guess what
  733. 28:49these questions might be about so as
  734. 28:51soon as Nicholas went on for quite some
  735. 28:53time about what an alfone is so he
  736. 28:56introduced the word and then he gave his
  737. 28:58definition and then he gave an example
  738. 29:00so that's a lot of focus on that one
  739. 29:03word alfone so I think a really strong
  740. 29:05listener who's practiced would determine
  741. 29:07that that's going to be important
  742. 29:09somehow down the road and I know we
  743. 29:11didn't have questions about alphones
  744. 29:13today in our practice questions but I'm
  745. 29:15guessing if we looked at the other
  746. 29:17questions in that test there probably
  747. 29:19would be at least one question something
  748. 29:21to do with alphones only because they
  749. 29:23talked about it for such a long time and
  750. 29:25then remember how they um the the two
  751. 29:26men were arguing later when we not
  752. 29:28arguing but debating the one man said
  753. 29:31should we only have alfon and Nicholas
  754. 29:32says no no let's or man one says let's
  755. 29:35mix them together so again the more you
  756. 29:37hear these ideas repeated that's a huge
  757. 29:39clue to you the listener that that's
  758. 29:41important so if you've missed it before
  759. 29:44the second time it's mentioned You' best
  760. 29:46get it down because it probably will
  761. 29:47come back so that's the best answer I
  762. 29:49can give you it's it's sort of your own
  763. 29:51judgment as to what's important and also
  764. 29:53what you have time to write down do your
  765. 29:55best you can't get it all and don't
  766. 29:57stress out about writing at all it's not
  767. 29:59going to happen I don't think not for
  768. 30:01anyone Thank You Ren um so another
  769. 30:06question listening for the news is
  770. 30:09tricky are there any tips for that for
  771. 30:12the news so do you mean like watching a
  772. 30:14video like what we've done today maybe
  773. 30:16this is a question about multitasking
  774. 30:18like watching a video and then listening
  775. 30:19at the same time I think they mean like
  776. 30:21listening the section the listening
  777. 30:24section where they give news like news
  778. 30:27information
  779. 30:28um okay that's I think what they're
  780. 30:30asking I can so meel if you're still
  781. 30:33watching us could you just clarify your
  782. 30:34question for us so I can ask her uh
  783. 30:38correctly meanwhile I have another
  784. 30:39question for you Randy is it a good idea
  785. 30:42to use a template in the writing card uh
  786. 30:45just like people do in other English
  787. 30:46language tests so we're to be clear now
  788. 30:49we're talking about writing and not
  789. 30:50listening just so talking about writing
  790. 30:52section yes okay no please do not use
  791. 30:54the template for writing ever it's not
  792. 30:57an authentic way to express yourself
  793. 30:59because each situation that you're going
  794. 31:01to answer via writing uh is going to be
  795. 31:04very specific to the question you're
  796. 31:06being asked so when you don't even know
  797. 31:08what the topic is how can you already
  798. 31:10start to prepare um like a rote memory
  799. 31:13response to that how do you know that
  800. 31:15that template response that you've
  801. 31:16worked through and may be memorized is
  802. 31:18going to even fit the question that
  803. 31:20you're trying to answer it's probably
  804. 31:22not it might have just like a surface
  805. 31:25connection but you're going to be
  806. 31:26missing all of those deep interesting
  807. 31:29descriptive details that the readers are
  808. 31:31looking for a large chunk of your score
  809. 31:33in writing comes from your content ideas
  810. 31:36and how well you've connected them back
  811. 31:38to the question itself so templates to
  812. 31:40be honest are are a very poor way to
  813. 31:43learn how to write what we should be
  814. 31:45doing is learning sentence structure
  815. 31:47developing our vocabulary and then um
  816. 31:51sort of crafting our ideas around the
  817. 31:53topic so start with the question figure
  818. 31:56out what you're being asked what details
  819. 31:58you know to answer that and start
  820. 31:59writing that's the best way to answer a
  821. 32:01question in writing and speaking for
  822. 32:03that matter I guess if you want to think
  823. 32:05of it that way so that's my I I know
  824. 32:07there are different perhaps different
  825. 32:09school maybe it's it's done in different
  826. 32:11parts of the world where a template is
  827. 32:13used specifically did practi these
  828. 32:15skills so I don't mean to sound like I'm
  829. 32:17criticizing that method if that's the
  830. 32:19way you've learned I'm hoping I'm not
  831. 32:20sounding critical but what I'm
  832. 32:22suggesting is that ese for sell pip
  833. 32:24anyways as we're talking there are
  834. 32:26better ways to do it so I'd encourage to
  835. 32:28let go of the template trust your
  836. 32:29sentence structure test your vocab and
  837. 32:31answer the question asked because it
  838. 32:33will be unique each
  839. 32:35time okay so listening for news
  840. 32:40itun that's the question the older
  841. 32:43question okay so this is part four so to
  842. 32:45just to clarify for the viewers that
  843. 32:47might be watching today we looked at
  844. 32:49part five which was listening to a
  845. 32:50discussion which was the video so the
  846. 32:52news item happens in I think it's part
  847. 32:55four of the reading test if I'm not
  848. 32:57mistaken right so to be honest that the
  849. 33:00strategies you're going to use there I
  850. 33:02think will be very similar to what I
  851. 33:04just described today so whether you're
  852. 33:06watching a video listening to people
  853. 33:08speak or listening to one person give a
  854. 33:11news report about a broad topic you're
  855. 33:14still determining what those main ideas
  856. 33:16are again for news I always think of it
  857. 33:19as um if I was a reporter I want to tell
  858. 33:21my audience the five W's right so you
  859. 33:24want to know who is involved what it is
  860. 33:26they're they're doing maybe where and
  861. 33:28when it's taking place and perhaps why
  862. 33:31there's a problem why is it happening
  863. 33:33and what's the solution so if you could
  864. 33:35at least pull out those five details and
  865. 33:38if you saw our last episode I know it
  866. 33:39was a month ago but we did um a chart
  867. 33:42where we actually put together the five
  868. 33:44W's as the headings so today we use
  869. 33:47person one two three the chart for that
  870. 33:49news item we put who what where when why
  871. 33:52and we just filled in those details kind
  872. 33:54of hopscotched as they were mentioned in
  873. 33:55the text so you're you're using the same
  874. 33:58strategies you're just maybe focusing on
  875. 34:00slightly different things because that's
  876. 34:02a news report and that's more of what
  877. 34:03they talk about there I hope that helps
  878. 34:06anyway um yes thank you for that and as
  879. 34:09one of our uh commentators here rightly
  880. 34:11put um yes we did have an episode um
  881. 34:15about taking notes for listening part
  882. 34:17four um we will link it in the
  883. 34:19description or in the chat below and
  884. 34:21mean you can check it out please let us
  885. 34:23know if you have any more questions
  886. 34:24after
  887. 34:26that um this this is more of uh the same
  888. 34:29general questions about the listening
  889. 34:31section some sections in the listening
  890. 34:33are too fast to understand how can we
  891. 34:37medicate that that literally comes down
  892. 34:40to practice and I know that's a terrible
  893. 34:42answer that nobody wants to hear there's
  894. 34:44no one solution that you can all of a
  895. 34:47sudden say okay I've got it now um again
  896. 34:50as the test progresses Parts four five
  897. 34:52and six I I wouldn't say that the speech
  898. 34:55speeds up I mean all of the recordings
  899. 34:58on the cell pip are if if you listen to
  900. 35:00them in a row I guess the speed should
  901. 35:02be around the same they are recorded by
  902. 35:05native English speakers so this is the
  903. 35:08the pace or the speed at which you would
  904. 35:09hear other people speak naturally in the
  905. 35:12community again what Mak some of these
  906. 35:14difficult is just the sheer length of
  907. 35:16the audio you're focusing in on but also
  908. 35:19on the vocabulary right when we add in
  909. 35:22that natural speed or Rhythm and then
  910. 35:25all of a sudden we're hearing words that
  911. 35:27we've never heard before and that will
  912. 35:29happen in Parts four five and six as the
  913. 35:31test gets harder that's the challenge so
  914. 35:34I think sometimes it's it's training the
  915. 35:36ear to keep up in present time with
  916. 35:38what's being spoken about but it's also
  917. 35:41doing some vocabulary development
  918. 35:43because the more words that you
  919. 35:45understand or at least have heard before
  920. 35:47the more you're able to actually keep up
  921. 35:49in present time the worst thing that
  922. 35:52anybody can do please do not do this
  923. 35:54don't get stuck on that word that you
  924. 35:56don't know so when you're listen
  925. 35:57listening and you know somebody says a
  926. 35:59word and and you sit there and ruminate
  927. 36:01over what that word means for 30 seconds
  928. 36:03and then you've missed the second half
  929. 36:05of the listening itself right so at
  930. 36:07least for now whatever your skills or
  931. 36:10vocabulary are about we've got to let go
  932. 36:13of of any words we don't know just
  933. 36:14forget them you can't write them down if
  934. 36:16you don't know the words so let go of it
  935. 36:18don't stress out about it but do keep
  936. 36:20your ear tuned for the details at least
  937. 36:22that you do understand for now those are
  938. 36:25the words you'll put in the chart when
  939. 36:26you're practicing at home you've got the
  940. 36:28benefit of replaying this and stopping
  941. 36:30it as many times as you need to so that
  942. 36:32would be the next thing you know I would
  943. 36:34not walk into any type of listening test
  944. 36:36cell pip or otherwise without doing that
  945. 36:39practice at home without the stress of
  946. 36:41the timed part uh so yeah the more you
  947. 36:44listen the better you get basically at
  948. 36:46the end of the day but it takes time
  949. 36:47this is not something you're going to
  950. 36:49improve in in two weeks of practicing
  951. 36:51this will take months very likely to
  952. 36:52really tune the ear depending on where
  953. 36:54your skill ability is right now
  954. 36:58thank you for answering that question um
  955. 37:00I think at the moment yes
  956. 37:06those can a candidate draw lines on a
  957. 37:09note okay can a candidate draw lines on
  958. 37:11a note taking sheet before the test
  959. 37:15starts well you could but you don't yet
  960. 37:17know what you're connecting right so
  961. 37:20again I think before the listening place
  962. 37:22when you become familiar with the
  963. 37:24different parts of the cell pit test you
  964. 37:25know what type of information ising
  965. 37:27coming so again for listening part four
  966. 37:29for that news item if you go ahead and
  967. 37:31set up your chart with the headings who
  968. 37:33what where when why for your listening
  969. 37:35part five if you've got a chart with
  970. 37:37person one two three you can do that
  971. 37:39much because you know for sure that that
  972. 37:41information will be included uh we we
  973. 37:44can't draw lines or connect ideas though
  974. 37:46until we know exactly what's being
  975. 37:47spoken about so that's sort of done in
  976. 37:50the moment uh and I would do it in the
  977. 37:52moment you know when remember in our
  978. 37:54example today we had Nicholas talk about
  979. 37:56the weit list and immediately Diane says
  980. 37:58no bad idea so as I was taking notes I
  981. 38:01wrote down Nicholas I drew an arrow and
  982. 38:03I jotted down Diane's idea so if you're
  983. 38:05just making these Connections in present
  984. 38:07time it shouldn't take you too long to
  985. 38:09do so that would be my best advice keep
  986. 38:12it present thank you Brandy and I think
  987. 38:14um sorry gpri I may have misunderstood
  988. 38:17your question you cannot write anything
  989. 38:19on your paper before the test starts but
  990. 38:21I think Brandy was asking Brandy was
  991. 38:23answering the part where whether or not
  992. 38:25it's a good idea to draw lines um and I
  993. 38:28hope that answered your question but for
  994. 38:29the purposes of so if you have questions
  995. 38:31regarding the rules and regulations um
  996. 38:33Brandy is an expert in everything but I
  997. 38:35would also suggest you check out the
  998. 38:37website because that's where you have
  999. 38:38explicit written proof of what you can
1000. 38:40and cannot do um and that's important to
1001. 38:43check before you go to your test um
1002. 38:45because we uh cup has rules in terms of
1003. 38:48like when they give you the note paper
1004. 38:49when they give you the pen and when you
1005. 38:50can write um but anyways thank you so
1006. 38:53much for joining us Brandy and thank you
1007. 38:54for answering questions patiently and in
1008. 38:56detail like you always do always happy

1010. 39:01having me and enjoy the rest of the

  1012. 39:04you're you're staying healthy wherever
1013. 39:06you are take care bye bye thank
1014. 39:09you okay so if you have more questions
1015. 39:11for um Brandy that you weren't able to
1016. 39:13think of right now or that um you

1022. 39:25drop them in the regular comments we can
1023. 39:27answer them for you in the comments or
1024. 39:29we will ask about it in the next
  1025. 39:31episode okay that's it for today but I
1026. 39:35haven't forgotten Aria question whose
  1027. 39:37face is on the Canadian $100
1028. 39:40bill uh it's Sir Robert bordon who was
