  1. 0:00You know the Racial Equality Statute, a
  2. 0:21law passed by Congress in 2010 that
  3. 0:24defines a set of rules to curb racial
  4. 0:28discrimination. and establish policies
  5. 0:32to reduce social inequality in Brazil.
  6. 0:35Don't you? Many people might argue that
  7. 0:38it is a law with very long text, over
  8. 0:4060 articles, and language that is
  9. 0:43difficult to understand.
  10. 0:44The Senate bookstore launched the
  11. 0:47Racial Equality Statute in simple terms
  12. 0:49. The publication uses comics to
  13. 0:52explain the main points of the law in a
  14. 0:55simplified and direct way. Let's talk
  15. 0:59now with writer Madu Macedo, who wrote
  16. 1:00the text. The drawings are by Felipe
  17. 1:04Modesto. Good morning, Madu.
  18. 1:06Good morning. How are you? Everything
  19. 1:08good?
  20. 1:08Everything is great, Madu. I have the
  21. 1:11booklet right here on my screen, right?
  22. 1:14Did the idea for the booklet come from
  23. 1:17a request from teenagers, or did you,
  24. 1:19as a writer and observer of your
  25. 1:21surroundings, identify a difficulty
  26. 1:24people have in understanding the
  27. 1:26statute? Well, in truth, we noticed
  28. 1:29this lack of awareness from most people
  29. 1:32regarding our legislation, because it
  30. 1:35is technical, more complex language, so
  31. 1:38our laws end up being very distant from
  32. 1:41the general public. Since I was a
  33. 1:44school principal, I thought it would be
  34. 1:46interesting to start bringing this into
  35. 1:48schools, right? Cool material so that
  36. 1:51schools, or rather, teenagers, can
  37. 1:53start to understand things that I, at
  38. 1:55least, didn't have the opportunity to.
  39. 1:59And then, talking to the president of
  40. 2:01Belo, he found the idea interesting. So
  41. 2:04we started making this collection.
  42. 2:07How has the feedback been? Are people
  43. 2:08saying, "Wow, I didn't know that was in
  44. 2:10the Racial Equality Statute"? "I saw it
  45. 2:12here in the comic, so that's what it
  46. 2:13really means," and so on. How has the
  47. 2:15response to this publication been?
  48. 2:17Well, very big, which makes both me and
  49. 2:19Felipe very happy, right? Because we
  50. 2:21put a lot of care into this work, with
  51. 2:24exactly that intention, right? That
  52. 2:26people understand more clearly a
  53. 2:28language that isn't always accessible
  54. 2:31to the entire public. I receive a lot
  55. 2:34from all over Brazil, mainly from
  56. 2:37schools, you know, about projects being
  57. 2:39carried out and how it has reflected
  58. 2:42positively in municipalities, even with
  59. 2:44an increase in reports, because
  60. 2:47students start to realize that it's not
  61. 2:49normal. You know the Racial Equality
  62. 3:11Statute, a law passed by Congress in
  63. 3:142010 that defines a set of rules to
  64. 3:17curb racial discrimination and
  65. 3:20establish policies to reduce social
  66. 3:23inequality in Brazil.
  67. 3:25Don't you? Many might argue that it is
  68. 3:28a law with a very long text, with more
  69. 3:31than 60 articles and language that is
  70. 3:33difficult to understand.
  71. 3:35The Senate bookstore has released the
  72. 3:37Racial Equality Statute in simple terms
  73. 3:40. The publication uses comics to
  74. 3:43explain the main points of the law in a
  75. 3:46simplified and direct way. Let's talk
  76. 3:49now with writer Madu Macedo, who wrote
  77. 3:51the text. The illustrations are by
  78. 3:54Felipe Modesto. Good morning, Madu.
  79. 3:57Good morning. How are you? Everything
  80. 3:58good?
  81. 3:59Everything is great, Madu. I have the
  82. 4:02booklet here on my screen, right? Did
  83. 4:05the idea for the booklet come from a
  84. 4:07demand from teenagers, or did you, as a
  85. 4:10writer and someone who observes their
  86. 4:12surroundings, identify that people were
  87. 4:15having trouble understanding the
  88. 4:17statute? Look, in truth, we noticed
  89. 4:20this lack of knowledge among most
  90. 4:22people regarding our legislation,
  91. 4:25because it's technical language, more
  92. 4:28complex, so our laws end up being very
  93. 4:31distant from the general public. Since
  94. 4:34I was a school principal, I thought it
  95. 4:36would be interesting for us to start
  96. 4:38bringing this into schools, right?
  97. 4:40Great material for schools, meaning
  98. 4:42teenagers can start to understand
  99. 4:45things that I, at least, didn't have
  100. 4:47the opportunity to. And then, talking
  101. 4:50to the president of the Senate's Abel,
  102. 4:52he thought the idea was interesting. So
  103. 4:55we started making this collection.
  104. 4:57What has the feedback been like? Are
  105. 4:59people saying, "Wow, I didn't know that
  106. 5:00was in the Racial Equality Statute"? "I
  107. 5:02saw it here in the comic, does it
  108. 5:04really mean this and that?" What has
  109. 5:05the response to this publication been
  110. 5:07like?
  111. 5:07Look, it's been great, which makes both
  112. 5:09me and Felipe very happy, right?
  113. 5:11Because we do this work with a lot of
  114. 5:14care, exactly with this intent, for
  115. 5:17people to understand more clearly
  116. 5:19language that isn't always accessible
  117. 5:22to the entire public. I hear from all
  118. 5:25over Brazil, especially from schools,
  119. 5:27about the projects being carried out
  120. 5:30and how this has reflected positively
  121. 5:33in municipalities, even with an
  122. 5:35increase in reports, because the
  123. 5:37student starts to realize that it's not
  124. 5:40normal.
