  1. 0:00Today is October 21st. The Yankees did
  2. 0:03their end of season press conferences.
  3. 0:06So, we're gonna do our reactions to the
  4. 0:09press conferences. Let's talk Yanks.

  13. 0:37John Boy and Jake
  14. 0:39talking [singing] with John. [music]
  15. 0:44>> Hello and welcome to Talking Yanks.
  16. 0:47Thank you very much for joining us
  17. 0:49today. My name is Jimmy. His name is
  18. 0:51Jake. BBD on the ones and twos. Fanatic
  19. 0:55Sports and Casino presenting the Yankees
  20. 0:58brass had their postseason
  21. 1:02press conferences. Hal and Cash a joint
  22. 1:05press conference and then Boone by
  23. 1:07himself, all the reporters there asking
  24. 1:09tons of questions.
  25. 1:12What's to blame? Who's to blame? Who's
  26. 1:14coming back? Who's not going back?
  27. 1:16Evaluate this. Talk about that.
  28. 1:19And there was some nuggets and tone, I
  29. 1:22guess, Jake. some stuff to chew on. How
  30. 1:25you doing,
  31. 1:26>> James Davis? Everyone tuning in. Uh,
  32. 1:28happy off season, I suppose. Uh, getting
  33. 1:31ready for a World Series of two teams
  34. 1:33very different from ours, which that
  35. 1:35always leads to some conversation
  36. 1:37starters, and that got brought up in the
  37. 1:39pressers. Um, I don't know. I I was I
  38. 1:43was excited uh you know seeing seeing
  39. 1:47Hal up there, seeing Cash up there,
  40. 1:49wondering what the biggest nuggets we're
  41. 1:51going to get are cuz you know you're
  42. 1:53going to have to filter through it. I
  43. 1:54mean it's going to be 98% uh kind of
  44. 1:57just dancing through questions and then
  45. 1:59you hope to grab some things here and
  46. 2:00there. So hopefully we can do that for
  47. 2:02you guys a little bit. Um, I mean, I I
  48. 2:05think my biggest one was like cash
  49. 2:08actually extended. Um, which, uh, you
  50. 2:12know, from some of the quotes, whether
  51. 2:13to blaming the offense or, you know,
  52. 2:15talking about how good the pitching is
  53. 2:17and different things or success through
  54. 2:19recent years, uh, I think that becomes a
  55. 2:22big part of the interesting side of it.
  56. 2:24And yeah, uh, I don't know. I I know
  57. 2:27there's not going to be a lot of wins
  58. 2:28from this. I I think our tone is going
  59. 2:29to be generally displeased because
  60. 2:31Yankee fans are generally displeased. Um
  61. 2:35>> I don't know. I I feel like we've said
  62. 2:36this the past few years. I want Hal to
  63. 2:38talk more and he does say he doesn't
  64. 2:40want to talk more. So, uh so that's not
  65. 2:43as exciting, but I something about Hal
  66. 2:45kind of does get me going. It has a
  67. 2:47little bit
  68. 2:49he's got the speech pattern down if you
  69. 2:51know what I'm saying. He was uh one
  70. 2:53point he was totally zoned out and I was
  71. 2:55like, "Oh, oh, how's phone?" Like,
  72. 2:57"Hal's not here. Look at him." And then
  73. 2:58he he literally snapped himself awake.
  74. 3:01It was, "Oh, who what's Brian saying?"
  75. 3:03It was a good It was a good little
  76. 3:04moment. Um I mean, yeah, Hal put a
  77. 3:07little anger in his V voice. He gave a
  78. 3:09little uh
  79. 3:12stern tone when talking about the
  80. 3:14offense.
  81. 3:15>> Yeah,
  82. 3:16>> the offense. Some of the quotes from Hal
  83. 3:17Steinber, the offense was a big
  84. 3:19disappointment for me. if you don't
  85. 3:21score runs, you're not going to win.
  86. 3:25He said uh it was uh an unacceptable end
  87. 3:28to the season.
  88. 3:30>> And he said all this with a little bit
  89. 3:32of an annoyed tone, like why don't you
  90. 3:35guys just win so I don't have to check
  91. 3:36in on all this stuff all the time,
  92. 3:38>> right?
  93. 3:39>> Making my job difficult here. Like I got
  94. 3:42to go now. I got to look into this.
  95. 3:44>> Uh
  96. 3:46but yeah, mostly the offense he blames,
  97. 3:48which is easy because they were awful.
  98. 3:50uh most of the season and then in the
  99. 3:54DS.
  100. 3:56>> Yes, we we know that they do come in as
  101. 4:00a concentrated effort coming to these
  102. 4:03things [laughter] like Boon Boon Hal and
  103. 4:06Cash talk together and they talk with
  104. 4:09the PR team and they're like, "Hey, how
  105. 4:11are how did we get through today?" Which
  106. 4:13is understandable. We would we would do
  107. 4:15the same thing if it was a Jake John
  108. 4:17Bibbs Joe's press conference day. we
  109. 4:19would sit down, Joe's would go rogue and
  110. 4:21we'd say, "We can't give him the mic
  111. 4:22anymore. You go run the horses." Um,
  112. 4:25that yes, it makes sense that they do
  113. 4:27that. And clearly what was established
  114. 4:30was that the offense wasn't good enough.
  115. 4:33Um, and I I guess part of me was
  116. 4:35surprised in certain facets they didn't
  117. 4:38lean in more, like the Yankees finishing
  118. 4:4026 in batting average when you have the
  119. 4:43one and two batting average teams in the
  120. 4:44World Series. I I know that's not how it
  121. 4:46works every year. like if you actually
  122. 4:47go through every year in the highest
  123. 4:49batting averages, it's those normally
  124. 4:51are not the best two teams cuz you do
  125. 4:53need more. Um but I was surprised they I
  126. 4:57I guess in a way I'm not that they
  127. 4:58didn't harp on that more. Um but yeah,
  128. 5:01the offense was the target and yeah, I I
  129. 5:04might as well get this out now so it's
  130. 5:06not just swirling in everyone else's
  131. 5:07head. But you know, the the offense was
  132. 5:10assembled by the front office. Uh,
  133. 5:12obviously you're missing Judge and
  134. 5:14Stanton, which they noted that
  135. 5:15tastefully. Like they weren't if if they
  136. 5:18had opened with that too early, Yankee
  137. 5:20fans would have gone, "Oh my god." But
  138. 5:22hey, I I think if you told Yankee fans
  139. 5:25before the season, like, "Guys, guess
  140. 5:27what? You guys are going to have a 90
  141. 5:29plus win season, but Judge isn't going
  142. 5:30to be there in October." We'd be like,
  143. 5:32"Oh, so we're not winning this year." So
  144. 5:34there again, you could take some certain
  145. 5:37nicities out of it. the offense got the
  146. 5:40blame from pretty much everyone except
  147. 5:42the front office that put together the
  148. 5:44offense.
  149. 5:45>> Yeah. Yeah. He said the offense was a
  150. 5:48big disappointment for me. Uh two years
  151. 5:51in a row now. So we he was like so we
  152. 5:52definitely have to look into that. Don't
  153. 5:54know what that means but I hope it
  154. 5:57happens. Uh they asked about the
  155. 5:59coaching staff and obviously they're
  156. 6:01like we haven't had those meetings yet.
  157. 6:03Um, you know, one of the quotes how
  158. 6:04says, "The majority of the
  159. 6:06responsibility lies with the position
  160. 6:08players
  161. 6:10>> and then Cash talks about how we were
  162. 6:12good enough to win." Okay. So, who's so
  163. 6:15where's So, you know, the offensive
  164. 6:19unit, the position players performance.
  165. 6:21How's saying not good? Cash is saying
  166. 6:23they're good enough to win. So, are you
  167. 6:25just pitting Are you just blaming the
  168. 6:26players straight up or you just blaming
  169. 6:29your coaches straight up? I think um the
  170. 6:32team that assembled the players is
  171. 6:35saying, "No, I assembled a team good
  172. 6:37enough to win."
  173. 6:38>> Yes,
  174. 6:38>> I disagree with that.
  175. 6:41>> But personally, I disagree with that. I
  176. 6:44I think they
  177. 6:46assembled a team, and I've said this
  178. 6:48many of times, and they talked about,
  179. 6:49they got asked about this, that can win
  180. 6:52over 162,
  181. 6:54but don't battle. Like like you just
  182. 6:57look at like these at bats and I know
  183. 6:58that the teams that are hitting more
  184. 7:00home runs are still winning in the
  185. 7:01postseason. So you can just fall on
  186. 7:02those flat
  187. 7:05stats, right?
  188. 7:06>> Well, look at the at bats before the
  189. 7:07home runs. Like for Jake Bowers, it's
  190. 7:09like an 11 pitch. He's fouling off every
  191. 7:11pitch. The Yankees don't foul off two
  192. 7:13strike. They they didn't assemble a team
  193. 7:16at the back end who had the skill.
  194. 7:18Austin Wells for majority of the season.
  195. 7:20and he did well in the postseason, but
  196. 7:22for majority of the season, his fouling
  197. 7:24off and fighting two strike pitches, not
  198. 7:27in his skill set. Gisham, not in his
  199. 7:29skill set. McMahon not in his skill set.
  200. 7:31Jazz, if he wants it to be at times,
  201. 7:34it's clearly a focus thing with Jazz.
  202. 7:36Everyone seems to agree across the board
  203. 7:37on that. But yeah, I I disagree that
  204. 7:40they had the team. When you watch the
  205. 7:42teams in the championship series, I was
  206. 7:43like, these at bats are way different
  207. 7:46than Yankee at bats. Yes. And that's uh
  208. 7:50this is this is a little Jakeism that
  209. 7:53I've stumbled into. Um but power is led
  210. 7:56by contact. Um and especially in these
  211. 7:59postseason at bats when you're seeing
  212. 8:01the most difficult pitchers, it if you
  213. 8:03have crazy power but you have you don't
  214. 8:04have the contact, it doesn't matter. um
  215. 8:07that the Rays who finished 22nd in
  216. 8:10homers and how many of those are junior
  217. 8:11camo that they don't grade out well
  218. 8:14there but they were the second average
  219. 8:16team and they have the least strikeouts
  220. 8:18uh in baseball this year. Milwaukee
  221. 8:20finished 28th in home runs and they were
  222. 8:23first in batting average this year. So
  223. 8:25there's something to approach again.
  224. 8:27It's it feels like it feels Looney
  225. 8:29Tunes. It feels like all these awards
  226. 8:31and stuff that went away from baseball
  227. 8:33or at least our Yankee baseball,
  228. 8:35everything's back.
  229. 8:36>> Yeah.
  230. 8:36>> Uh the way that Cash uh or excuse me,
  231. 8:40Kevin Cash, the longest tenure manager
  232. 8:42and the way that Pat Murphy treat their
  233. 8:43players again goes back to all the
  234. 8:45conversations about being fair and like
  235. 8:48doing your role. Um and you know, I if
  236. 8:50you haven't seen it, go look up Pat
  237. 8:52Murphy talking about David Hamilton and
  238. 8:54laying down a bunt in his first bat
  239. 8:56because he'll get better pitches later.
  240. 8:58like the Yankees don't believe in
  241. 8:59anything like that. Are you kidding me?
  242. 9:01That doesn't show up and and the numbers
  243. 9:05that they look at that they've built
  244. 9:06their organization around that. No, that
  245. 9:09was uh cuz you and I were talking before
  246. 9:11this like you know of Hal and Cash or or
  247. 9:14Boone, which interview did you like
  248. 9:15more? I Boone didn't do much for me and
  249. 9:18maybe that's just the being numb of
  250. 9:20doing it with Boone. Although you do get
  251. 9:22some potential inside Yankee stuff, I
  252. 9:27was more sad and broken by the Hal and
  253. 9:31Cash presser because when I do our end
  254. 9:33of year show, which I normally say I'm
  255. 9:36excited to do in a way because it's an
  256. 9:38appreciation of everything I know wasn't
  257. 9:39this year. It would be so easy for me to
  258. 9:42do a Fanatics Yankees are going to win
  259. 9:44the World Series bet. Go check it out if
  260. 9:47Fanatics would love that. Um, I I would
  261. 9:49love that if it's right, but I I didn't
  262. 9:52put a dollar on this team because they
  263. 9:53didn't have a championship roster. And
  264. 9:55that's the scary sad part.
  265. 9:57>> I think even with Judge they didn't have
  266. 9:58a postseason championship roster. I
  267. 10:00think that's where
  268. 10:02>> um not everyone would agree with us
  269. 10:04there. Some people think with Judge they
  270. 10:06were like a lock to win the ALCS and
  271. 10:08maybe they could have got to the ALCS
  272. 10:10but if you just look at the up and down
  273. 10:12like they still had a bottom of the
  274. 10:13lineup that just did not fight and
  275. 10:15that's why for the last two three years
  276. 10:18starting pitchers that have their way
  277. 10:19with the Yankees have their way with the
  278. 10:20Yankees. They have no skill set to break
  279. 10:22that up and and they continue not and
  280. 10:25and Hal kind of
  281. 10:28agrees in the sense that he made it
  282. 10:31clear that this is not I'm disappointed
  283. 10:35with the offense for coming up short in
  284. 10:37the postseason. He's disappointed in the
  285. 10:39offense for two years now being bad. And
  286. 10:43he said it's not like it's a two-year
  287. 10:45organizational pattern. and he said all
  288. 10:48season throughout the regular season I
  289. 10:49was disappointed with the offense which
  290. 10:51does contradict what Cashman said that
  291. 10:53we were good enough to win and we had
  292. 10:55the roster and Boone said where Boon and
  293. 10:57Cash were like well look at our offense
  294. 10:59against Boston it worked it was there in
  295. 11:02those two games and then it didn't
  296. 11:03happen in DS so that's just baseball and
  297. 11:05that happens where's quotes were not
  298. 11:08that he was saying the whole year our
  299. 11:11offense talked and I was disappointed
  300. 11:14and
  301. 11:15that needs to
  302. 11:16The run it back Yanks.
  303. 11:18>> Yes. And how' they run that back? It's
  304. 11:21not like the players put the team
  305. 11:23together. That
  306. 11:26ignoring the front office in this was
  307. 11:28disgusting. Um I I hated I hated all of
  308. 11:31that. And the only thing I hated more
  309. 11:32than that was
  310. 11:35all three uh bringing up Boston and how
  311. 11:38they did good there. Boston was a
  312. 11:40terrible team. Boston was a terrible
  313. 11:42baseball team this year. In one of the
  314. 11:44worst American leagues ever, Boston had
  315. 11:47six good weeks. Other than that, they
  316. 11:49were horrible. So, them saying like,
  317. 11:52"Oh, well, you know, the offense looked
  318. 11:54good against Boston and, you know, I I'd
  319. 11:57like that we got to the wild card. I
  320. 11:58like that we won the wild card." That's
  321. 11:59nothing. That is nothing. That's still
  322. 12:03failure. And even what you did against
  323. 12:05the Rays, I mean, you didn't win a game
  324. 12:08in October. The year was a failure.
  325. 12:11And and that's where a lot of people
  326. 12:13were coming back to the championship
  327. 12:14question. It just became this like
  328. 12:16circular game of chicken of like, well,
  329. 12:18the mission is to win the World Series.
  330. 12:20And it's like, well, you you haven't you
  331. 12:22haven't in the longest drought in
  332. 12:23Yankees history. And that was my only I
  333. 12:26was wondering if one of the beat
  334. 12:27reporters, and I I don't want to call
  335. 12:28them out. I I don't know their job. I
  336. 12:30don't do their job. I thought someone
  337. 12:32might mention the longest drought, World
  338. 12:34Series drought in Yankees history, which
  339. 12:36is dangerous. Um it was um Clappish at
  340. 12:39the end and a very targeted question
  341. 12:42that was like
  342. 12:45you haven't won. Uh it was towards the
  343. 12:48end he said uh it was like aren't you
  344. 12:51embarrassed or something like that.
  345. 12:52>> Yeah.
  346. 12:53>> It was pretty like you guys haven't won
  347. 12:54in forever. Aren't you embarrassed? How
  348. 12:56do what do you do about that? And I
  349. 12:58think how's response was I yes I would
  350. 13:01have hoped to won more than once by now.
  351. 13:04>> Yes. But we had
  352. 13:04>> Yeah. I I don't think they said long as
  353. 13:06Stout there. Maybe they did. Um but
  354. 13:08>> No, we might not have said that, but it
  355. 13:09was it was
  356. 13:10>> it was targeted. No, there was a
  357. 13:11murderer's row that came up about 30
  358. 13:14minutes in.
  359. 13:15>> Uh they got to Joel, they got to Boland.
  360. 13:18Um that then it was like it was almost
  361. 13:20like let's get some questions rolling
  362. 13:21and then we'll we'll let the middle of
  363. 13:23the lineup eat a little bit.
  364. 13:25>> Uh that yeah, Clappish had one too. Um
  365. 13:28and yeah, that was I I mean Hal I think
  366. 13:31that's where he got to hide behind the
  367. 13:32fact that he doesn't like doing any of
  368. 13:34this. He was like, "No, I don't want to
  369. 13:35come up here and tell you that we lost."
  370. 13:37But also saying, "Yeah, I've expected
  371. 13:39we've won multiple since then." Hello.
  372. 13:42Like what? Like that's where the
  373. 13:45craziness really kicks in. Um and on the
  374. 13:48offense, Sim Burner said they he thought
  375. 13:51they left spring training with the World
  376. 13:52Series offense.
  377. 13:55And
  378. 13:56that was with Stanton and Judge. Like we
  379. 13:58couldn't have predicted that we were
  380. 14:00going to lose 80%. Stanton and Judge
  381. 14:02were not going to play 80% of the game.
  382. 14:04like, well, Stan, I mean, you you have
  383. 14:06to pencil him in for missing two months
  384. 14:09now. And we've been saying that for
  385. 14:10years, and it's been true, so I don't
  386. 14:12know how much that changes the regular
  387. 14:13season. Um, and Judge is obviously a big
  388. 14:16one, but there's something to be looked
  389. 14:17into there about injuries and and not
  390. 14:20not letting Judge play for a month hurt,
  391. 14:23and then he can't come back and not
  392. 14:25letting him skip minor league games and
  393. 14:28and gradually get into his cleats on the
  394. 14:30turf. Would you have rather judge uh not
  395. 14:33available at all in the uh playoffs or
  396. 14:38you know only one week of MLB action?
  397. 14:40because what you did was you just let
  398. 14:42him dictate his path and everyone talks
  399. 14:46about slowly going and Boon took him out
  400. 14:47of the game in the sixth inning and
  401. 14:48Judge was saying I should play the whole
  402. 14:50thing and everyone says well when you
  403. 14:52wear cleats for nine innings on turf
  404. 14:55you're stepping different your muscles
  405. 14:57are being used different and if you rush
  406. 14:59into that just like spring training soft
  407. 15:01tissue injuries occur and that was all
  408. 15:02said before he rushed into it and so so
  409. 15:06that's you have to look deeper into the
  410. 15:08organization there of who's calling the
  411. 15:09shots on injury return and injuries
  412. 15:12because Judge played 30 games hurt, had
  413. 15:15bad numbers. We said on the podcast,
  414. 15:16"This guy's hurt. He's playing through
  415. 15:18something. Hopefully, it's not serious."
  416. 15:20Turns out it was serious. Judge gets
  417. 15:22asked about, he says, "Well, Cole went
  418. 15:24down, Freed went down, Stanton went
  419. 15:26down, so I got to play for the team."
  420. 15:27It's like, "No, dude. You have to be
  421. 15:29healthy for the the end of the year.
  422. 15:32>> We don't need 30 bad games out of you."
  423. 15:35you know, he doesn't know the s the
  424. 15:37severity of the injury at that point.
  425. 15:39But I think that that's another thing
  426. 15:41Hal has to look into because it wasn't
  427. 15:44handled and none of Judge's injuries are
  428. 15:45ever handled normal.
  429. 15:48Normal at all. Maybe properly sometimes,
  430. 15:51maybe not properly, but never normal.
  431. 15:54No. And I I think that starts to tie
  432. 15:57into, you know, some some of the
  433. 15:59reporters did bring up uh some of the
  434. 16:01offseason fodder like we did on our our
  435. 16:03last episode about guys like CC talking
  436. 16:06and Rizzo talking and all that. Um that
  437. 16:09yeah like you know basically not uh the
  438. 16:13practicing at the trop and using the
  439. 16:15trajec machine that got brought up.
  440. 16:16There's a lot of decision-making culture
  441. 16:18stuff that um the Yankees are so far off
  442. 16:22on uh and they don't believe they are
  443. 16:24cuz it's the same people that have been
  444. 16:26there so they wouldn't believe they are.
  445. 16:29Um but every now and then someone like
  446. 16:30Rizzo will come through and have a
  447. 16:32couple quotes on it because he's been
  448. 16:34other places. But yeah, uh I mean
  449. 16:39we do this in sports and we should do
  450. 16:41this in sports, but you look around for
  451. 16:42other teams for their culture or what's
  452. 16:45working or how to keep up with the
  453. 16:46Joneses. And I mean obviously Pat
  454. 16:49Murphy's operating on a different level,
  455. 16:51but if you think there's not going to be
  456. 16:52three more Pat Murphy's in the next two
  457. 16:54years because other teams are going to
  458. 16:56see if that works for them and we'll
  459. 16:58find out. Uh the Brewers are also a
  460. 16:59class organization. like um everything
  461. 17:02that's getting you know ignored with
  462. 17:04them is like how good of a pitching
  463. 17:06factory they are that brings them uh you
  464. 17:09know that puts them in this opportunity.
  465. 17:11Same with the Yankees. Um
  466. 17:14they Yeah. Uh that's the part that we
  467. 17:17don't know the line. We don't know the
  468. 17:19line between Hal. We don't know the line
  469. 17:20between Boone. We don't know the line
  470. 17:22between Cash. We don't know the line
  471. 17:23between Judge. between the different
  472. 17:25forms of leadership, which we talked
  473. 17:27about last episode, and how that culture
  474. 17:29permeates through the clubhouse, and if
  475. 17:32it's right, and I I think the leaning is
  476. 17:35that it's not, especially when you have
  477. 17:37like Cece's the one that like that's
  478. 17:39that's the one if this was a schoolyard
  479. 17:42fight, you and I are like hiding behind
  480. 17:43Cece's legs being like, "Listen to what
  481. 17:45he said. Listen to what he said." Cuz
  482. 17:47he's Cece Sebathia,
  483. 17:50so listen to him.
  484. 17:51>> Yeah. I talked about that, asked Boon
  485. 17:52about his comments and the not working
  486. 17:55out the trap and he danced around that
  487. 17:57and was like, "Well, we did after we did
  488. 17:59before game one and then he kind of
  489. 18:01slipped." You said like game two we used
  490. 18:04as an off day. We're not an off day, but
  491. 18:05we worked it there. It's like you had no
  492. 18:06answer. um but who is making that
  493. 18:09decision and then uh talked about the
  494. 18:13standard and CC saying there's no one in
  495. 18:15the clubhouse to set the standard and
  496. 18:17Boon kind of was like I try every year
  497. 18:19like Andy Pettit with us a lot and
  498. 18:20that's what I said yeah the pitching has
  499. 18:22has Gry has Pettit has people showing up
  500. 18:25um it's the the position players in the
  501. 18:28offense that I Reggie Jackson was there
  502. 18:30for a while they lost him I I don't know
  503. 18:33I don't know why they lost him or what
  504. 18:34the situation was but He was like, "I
  505. 18:37think we're okay." But what else is he
  506. 18:38going to say there? The only thing that
  507. 18:43um they're unwavering
  508. 18:47in their style. They and got asked about
  509. 18:50this a lot. They don't believe in uh
  510. 18:53publicly criticizing a player as a means
  511. 18:56to motivate him. Now, Pat Murphy, who's
  512. 18:59coming up a lot, um and then some other
  513. 19:02managers around this time are starting
  514. 19:04to do that.
  515. 19:06starting to like not in a terrible way,
  516. 19:08not like throw him under the bus, but
  517. 19:10like yeah, no, he's got to work on that.
  518. 19:11Like, yeah, no, I don't want him to do
  519. 19:12that. Yeah. Hey, I got to get benched.
  520. 19:14But no, no, I think it's for better to
  521. 19:16be honest as um a person like as for
  522. 19:18Boon the guy. I don't know for manager
  523. 19:21of the Yankees, but he's like that's not
  524. 19:22me. I know myself.
  525. 19:24>> Yeah. Uh Cameron Mabin wrote a whole
  526. 19:26tweet recently saying like Boon is very
  527. 19:29demanding behind the scenes and he is on
  528. 19:32the guys and he communicates when he's
  529. 19:34upset and when he's not very clearly
  530. 19:36behind the scenes, but Boon has said
  531. 19:38over and over again, I I am not that
  532. 19:40guy. I don't believe in it and I'm not
  533. 19:42going to do it. And part of me says,
  534. 19:44good for you, Boon. Don't change who you
  535. 19:46are. But then that's that's where Hal
  536. 19:50needs to and I'm not saying there's an
  537. 19:52answer right or wrong. And how said, can
  538. 19:54we continue this voice? Do we need to
  539. 19:57shake it up? Is there different ways to
  540. 19:59approach things? But Boon is saying,
  541. 20:01"No, that's not what I'm going to do."
  542. 20:02And it's very clear that Hal has
  543. 20:05[clears throat] some sort of childhood
  544. 20:06trauma from his dad firing managers
  545. 20:11every year. And maybe he saw the rubbles
  546. 20:14in the clubhouse and the terrible
  547. 20:17organizational vibes inside the walls
  548. 20:20when that happened as a boy. I don't
  549. 20:22know. But he's like, "We aren't gonna do
  550. 20:25that. We aren't going to do extensions
  551. 20:28and we aren't gonna do firings." That's
  552. 20:30basically the how mantra. We are going
  553. 20:33to give contracts and let them run out
  554. 20:36and we will honor them. And I I mean,
  555. 20:38you can I would need to have a
  556. 20:41psychiatrist sit down with Hal because
  557. 20:42that to me clearly is him being like, "I
  558. 20:46hated that aspect of my dad. I don't
  559. 20:49want to be that.
  560. 20:52because they he is dead set.
  561. 20:55>> Yes. Uh and that's with you know I I my
  562. 20:58first excitement for this Yankees off
  563. 21:00season was uh Hicks and DJ's money comes
  564. 21:04off the books two of two of the like
  565. 21:06kind of extensions they got snuck into
  566. 21:08DJ hits free agency again but it was
  567. 21:10almost like and we were on it like you
  568. 21:12have to resign them. They signed him to
  569. 21:13a contract that was longer because they
  570. 21:15knew it was going to end bad and it did.
  571. 21:17Um, with that, my biggest frustration
  572. 21:19from the press conference, they don't
  573. 21:22believe in New York City. They're scared
  574. 21:24of it. They're scared of the city.
  575. 21:26They're scared of the media. And I know
  576. 21:28we've talked about this.
  577. 21:29>> Oh, terrifi. They They're putting so
  578. 21:31much blame on it, dude. We can't tell
  579. 21:33which players are going to play well
  580. 21:35here.
  581. 21:36>> The amount
  582. 21:37>> build a culture where they can.
  583. 21:39>> Maybe a tough coach. Build a culture
  584. 21:40where they can.
  585. 21:41>> The amount
  586. 21:43>> and and this ties into literally all of
  587. 21:45it. the amount that Boon goes through to
  588. 21:47protect the players and that's why he's
  589. 21:49there and that's who he is as someone
  590. 21:50who plays the game and that's where like
  591. 21:52and maybe some of you are like Matt
  592. 21:53we're not more mad at Boon but also like
  593. 21:56I I think he's they've taken him to be
  594. 22:00Aaron Boone and that's what he does and
  595. 22:02like there's a part of us that respects
  596. 22:04that because that's just who he is. Like
  597. 22:05it's if they told him to change he
  598. 22:07wouldn't do it.
  599. 22:08>> If they were like Boon be Pat Murphy go
  600. 22:10that's what we want. He'd be like no
  601. 22:12like that's not who I am. I'm from
  602. 22:14Southern California. I played the game
  603. 22:15for a long time. I'm not doing that.
  604. 22:18They are so scared of the media.
  605. 22:20>> Yeah. And the city and the fans
  606. 22:22>> and like I it's so horribly frustrating.
  607. 22:24The amount of times today they brought
  608. 22:26up oh well you know it's New York and
  609. 22:28the amount of times they brought up you
  610. 22:29know you guys the media and like look at
  611. 22:31this. Look at this [ __ ] Look at you and
  612. 22:33me. Like look look what this has turned
  613. 22:35into. Um and a part of that was fueled
  614. 22:38off of how big and how popular the
  615. 22:40Yankees are. But you don't see that
  616. 22:42complaint. I normally point to the
  617. 22:44players when I'm like, "Look at how many
  618. 22:45followers Andrew has. Look how many
  619. 22:47followers Clint has." Well, look at you
  620. 22:49just sold a nothing percentage of your
  621. 22:51business for $2.4 billion dollars
  622. 22:54because they just want that action pop.
  623. 22:56And that was one of Hal's best like that
  624. 22:58was if I was doing Hal's best moments
  625. 23:00and they're like, "So, how much power do
  626. 23:02they have?" He said, "Zero, zero,
  627. 23:03>> zero, nothing. They just gave me 2.4
  628. 23:08billion for nothing. That's what we have
  629. 23:11here." And you know why you have that?
  630. 23:13Because of the media, because of the
  631. 23:15fans. There's a bunch of other baseball
  632. 23:18teams that don't have this. But you need
  633. 23:20to embrace that. And that's my biggest
  634. 23:22thing until they start embracing it
  635. 23:24again. Cuz I get that there has to be a
  636. 23:26us against the world culture to a
  637. 23:28degree. Um but it's it's the covering up
  638. 23:31stuff and the amount of times and I
  639. 23:33we've talked to people within the
  640. 23:34Yankees who are like, you know, for that
  641. 23:36Yankee stuff of like, oh, this guy came
  642. 23:38into town. He wasn't very good. He
  643. 23:40couldn't handle the city. I think there
  644. 23:42is some of that. I think there's also if
  645. 23:44you just did random teams and you did a
  646. 23:46veteran who came into town and they were
  647. 23:48bad, other teams also have that. So, it
  648. 23:51becomes a copout.
  649. 23:52>> I've heard that from other parts of the
  650. 23:55Yankees organization a lot. Like,
  651. 23:57>> dude, everyone wants to blame the fans,
  652. 23:59but guys go other places and get worse.
  653. 24:01>> Tough sport.
  654. 24:02>> It's a tough sport. But yeah, dude, they
  655. 24:05um it's it's evident that they are
  656. 24:08blaming the toughness of playing in New
  657. 24:10York a lot.
  658. 24:12>> Yes.
  659. 24:12>> And they need Well, okay. Well, that's
  660. 24:14not changing. That's what I said to Josh
  661. 24:16Donaldson on when I was I was like,
  662. 24:18that's not changing. And uh so figure
  663. 24:22out how to build players that can handle
  664. 24:24it. If they can't if you identify that
  665. 24:26you have a Joey Gallow or Sunny Gray
  666. 24:28that are not enjoying this, you need to
  667. 24:31figure like go with your mental the
  668. 24:34mental health coach guy who's authors of
  669. 24:35Cowboys. Like maybe he's maybe he's got
  670. 24:38to develop a new program for you know
  671. 24:40embracing this and building guys because
  672. 24:43if you can't handle the fans over the
  673. 24:46course of a regular season, you're not
  674. 24:48going to be able to hear handle the
  675. 24:49postseason
  676. 24:50>> 100%. And like I still I still even
  677. 24:52leave Sunny the slightest asterisk
  678. 24:54because Larry Rothschild was like behind
  679. 24:55the time and wouldn't let Sunny pitch
  680. 24:57like I I don't think and like think
  681. 24:58about how
  682. 24:59>> but he did say it
  683. 25:00>> a little bit but also like guys like
  684. 25:01CeCe came out defended Sunny and Sunny's
  685. 25:03pitched in like other decentsized
  686. 25:05markets and did good. Like I again like
  687. 25:07I'll even I'll even defend Sunny Gray
  688. 25:09all these years later because I think
  689. 25:11there was a little bit of like us like
  690. 25:12I'll I'll wear that a little bit. Like I
  691. 25:14think there was a little bit of New
  692. 25:15York. I think there was also what was
  693. 25:16going on in the Yankees or that they
  694. 25:18tried to make him a slider instead of a
  695. 25:19curveball guy. Anyways, um no, that that
  696. 25:22was my that was my biggest and most
  697. 25:24frustrating thing besides like putting
  698. 25:26the Red Sox stuff as a win again that
  699. 25:29this year's games didn't mean
  700. 25:30>> I did like beating the Red Sox by a lot.
  701. 25:34>> Their manager was trash and their team's
  702. 25:37bad. He the the manager I actually think
  703. 25:39the man I think just think the team was
  704. 25:41better than the manager how the manager
  705. 25:44>> they should have let Gray pitch those
  706. 25:46games.
  707. 25:46>> Yes. Because the Yankees can't get to
  708. 25:48starting pitches.
  709. 25:49>> Ranger Suarez didn't pitch in that
  710. 25:50series. Like the Red Sox [ __ ] the bet
  711. 25:52against.
  712. 25:52>> If the starting pitcher is doing good to
  713. 25:54get the Yankees, have them throw 200
  714. 25:55pitches. They won't change their
  715. 25:56approach. They won't try to grind it
  716. 25:58down. But if they get a lead, then
  717. 26:00they'll start doing the [ __ ] that they
  718. 26:01should be doing from the start of the
  719. 26:03game. This episode is sponsored by

  744. 26:58Um, what else did they talk about?
  745. 27:04Boon talked about um
  746. 27:10I mean Boon was kind of good. He's like
  747. 27:11I
  748. 27:13He's like if he was like if I don't win
  749. 27:15a championship here like
  750. 27:18it's a failure. He's like and by my
  751. 27:20standards like by me judging me,
  752. 27:22>> right?
  753. 27:22>> Like and he's like he's like I
  754. 27:24understand. Is this the audio of it?
  755. 27:26where if you play a team that you were
  756. 27:28better than during the regular season or
  757. 27:30the AL Central, you win, but if you play
  758. 27:32a team that was as good as you were
  759. 27:34better, uh, you don't. Why should we
  760. 27:37believe under you that your team isn't
  761. 27:39just kind of like a bully and when you
  762. 27:41get hit in the postseason by someone
  763. 27:43better, you you won't stay down like you
  764. 27:45have uh your last eight times in the
  765. 27:47playoffs.
  766. 27:48>> Yeah. I mean,
  767. 27:49>> another
  768. 27:50>> we got to prove that otherwise.
  769. 27:51Hopefully, we are that bully and we're
  770. 27:53the best team throughout the season next
  771. 27:55year and bully our way through the
  772. 27:56postseason. But until we don't, I don't
  773. 28:00have that answer for you. We have to we
  774. 28:02have to answer that. You know, until the
  775. 28:03Brewers or the Rays win the World
  776. 28:05Series, they've never won a World
  777. 28:06Series. I believe it can happen with me
  778. 28:09at the helm. Um, but, you know, any
  779. 28:13answer I give in defense of that isn't
  780. 28:16going to be a great one or satisfy
  781. 28:17people. So, you know,
  782. 28:20I think I'm good at my job. Um, I think
  783. 28:24we have a lot of the right people in the
  784. 28:25building. Um, and but at the end of the
  785. 28:29day, we haven't won a championship with
  786. 28:32me at the helm. And, you know,
  787. 28:34ultimately that's what has to happen to,
  788. 28:37you know, to satisfy
  789. 28:40certainly myself. Like, that's why I'm
  790. 28:42doing this. Um, but to answer those
  791. 28:44questions ultimately, um, haven't been
  792. 28:46able to do it yet.
  793. 28:51Yeah, the second half of that is like,
  794. 28:53okay,
  795. 28:56he's in it to win. It's just and he's
  796. 28:59got a style.
  797. 29:01So, I don't you're not going to expect
  798. 29:02many changes there. So, what changes can
  799. 29:04we expect?
  800. 29:06>> They just got to get better players.
  801. 29:08>> The hitting like, you know, the hitting
  802. 29:10side of things.
  803. 29:10>> I I guess we've been mad about the
  804. 29:12running back Yanks. like they they can't
  805. 29:14run it back offensively. And even uh you
  806. 29:17know going back to last year another
  807. 29:20another thing okay Jake jog your memory
  808. 29:23the LSD kicks back in last year their
  809. 29:25whole thing was after the trade deadline
  810. 29:28remember they were like oh we improve
  811. 29:30well you know after the deadline we were
  812. 29:32a different team that that was part of
  813. 29:33their run it back mantra I guess from
  814. 29:36this it's addressing the hitting um
  815. 29:38Boone had a couple quotes like you know
  816. 29:40they asked about the Brewers or the Rays
  817. 29:42being different and he's like well
  818. 29:43they're much more athletic teams
  819. 29:45Um and Hal mentioned a little bit of
  820. 29:47that too that um
  821. 29:50>> I guess yes offensively
  822. 29:54they really have to make some changes
  823. 29:56and adjustments otherwise but they that
  824. 29:59comes from the very that comes from the
  825. 30:01very top of the analytics department
  826. 30:03right
  827. 30:03>> and there's and I we know that we I am
  828. 30:08certain of that that they
  829. 30:11identify which hitters to get in my opin
  830. 30:14opinion is wrong. They will throw stats
  831. 30:18at us that are don't that bury
  832. 30:23everything that happens before the
  833. 30:25result comes which I think is ignorant
  834. 30:28and I know this because I had a back and
  835. 30:30forth
  836. 30:31>> with them about this
  837. 30:33>> where I was like well what were his
  838. 30:36swings on this pitch and this pitch and
  839. 30:38how long was the count and are they just
  840. 30:40swinging for homers when they're tied
  841. 30:43games or when they're ahead or now they
  842. 30:45adding to the lead by playing small ball
  843. 30:47or um is it if there's no one on are
  844. 30:49they get doing bigger swings and then if
  845. 30:51they're getting you know the first
  846. 30:52batter is trying to get like it's not
  847. 30:54just whoever hits more home runs wins.
  848. 30:57That's what they think
  849. 30:59>> and that's what they still believe and
  850. 31:01it's a correct stat but whoever hits
  851. 31:04more home runs while in the process
  852. 31:08grinding down the pitchers and having
  853. 31:10productive outs and leading to harder
  854. 31:13outings. You saw Jerasmuson just breeze
  855. 31:15through the Yanks because they were
  856. 31:16swinging for that big hit. When you saw
  857. 31:19the Guardians, they were fouling off
  858. 31:21balls. Quan had a great at bat in the
  859. 31:23first inning and they don't up to this
  860. 31:26point I can say for certain they just
  861. 31:30believe in that final number.
  862. 31:32The you know the Brewers if if you guys
  863. 31:34were watching that series like the the
  864. 31:36way they got to Tyler Glass now like
  865. 31:38they had to start working through them
  866. 31:40and grind them down to get there
  867. 31:41eventually that Yeah. I I guess my my
  868. 31:44other win during my LSD flashback a
  869. 31:47moment ago was something that they they
  870. 31:49did say a few times, especially during
  871. 31:51the boon part was being the bully and
  872. 31:53being the better regular season team.
  873. 31:55And I think Hal and Cash acknowledge it
  874. 31:56too that like how the one seeds in this
  875. 31:59playoff format have an advantage and
  876. 32:01it's like well then you need to go out
  877. 32:03and be more aggressive in the regular
  878. 32:05season.
  879. 32:06>> Yeah.
  880. 32:06>> Um and we see they do a lot of
  881. 32:10maintenance or taking care of guys and
  882. 32:11that's where again If you had told us
  883. 32:14before the season, hey, Judge is going
  884. 32:15to miss miss uh 60 games and they're not
  885. 32:19going to have him in the postseason, a
  886. 32:21lot of Yankee fans will probably be
  887. 32:22like, okay, not the year, huh? Um, so
  888. 32:24there is that caveat, but also it's not
  889. 32:28the only thing and there's a lot more
  890. 32:30wrong with this team. And you can point
  891. 32:31to the Braves and how they won without
  892. 32:32Akunia. And you can point to other
  893. 32:34teams, how they have their different
  894. 32:35injuries that um and it it basically
  895. 32:38goes back to the whole roster
  896. 32:40construction thing that you've harped on
  897. 32:42for years that your bottom of your
  898. 32:43lineup shouldn't be the top of your
  899. 32:45lineup, just a bad version of it. Like
  900. 32:47it should be different at bad should be
  901. 32:49flipping. Oh, and here come the speed
  902. 32:51guys. Here come the contact guys. Here
  903. 32:53comes this. Like and I they still don't
  904. 32:55believe in that. At least that's what
  905. 32:57they showed from the bottom of their
  906. 32:58lineup this year. So, I guess that's one
  907. 33:00of the offseason things to look into.
  908. 33:02And there was the Boone side of this did
  909. 33:04have more uh Yankees roster type
  910. 33:08conversations. Um at least with Luis
  911. 33:11Garcia Jr.
  912. 33:13>> Yeah. And Rice and Carlo dhing. Um
  913. 33:18I was going to say something I forgot it
  914. 33:19right now. Postseason baseball is still
  915. 33:22rolling. in Fanatic Sports and Casino
  916. 33:24has you covered for every game left on
  917. 33:26the board. With the long ball rising
  918. 33:28jackpot, you can win your share of 50K
  919. 33:30in fan cash. Just pick the player you
  920. 33:32think will hit the longest home run in
  921. 33:33each playoff round with a $5 bet, and
  922. 33:36you're in for a share of 50K. And no
  923. 33:38matter what you bet, Fanatic Sports
  924. 33:40Casino is the only sports book to reward
  925. 33:42every bet with up to 10% back in fan
  926. 33:44cash, win or lose. And on top of that,
  927. 33:46every game day this postseason, there's
  928. 33:48a fresh MLB profit boost waiting for
  929. 33:50you. Make every bet count at Fanatics,
  930. 33:52the only sports book to reward every
  931. 33:54bet.
  932. 33:55>> Forget what I was going to say.
  933. 33:56>> Okay. Do you want me to say different
  934. 33:58things and see if it
  935. 33:59>> What was the last things we were said?
  936. 34:01[clears throat]
  937. 34:01>> So, I distracted you with the Yankees
  938. 34:03players and Luis Garcia Jr.
  939. 34:05>> Yeah, before that.
  940. 34:06>> Before that, I said,
  941. 34:08>> um, Yankees, we don't win anymore. Oh,
  942. 34:12the lineup better in the regular season.
  943. 34:14>> Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes.
  944. 34:16>> That's how you do it, people.
  945. 34:18>> Because I'm developing a theory. Okay.
  946. 34:20Uh, in the last decade, the the view
  947. 34:25from front offices that the Mariners put
  948. 34:28on display is the postseason is a
  949. 34:30crapshoot. Right.
  950. 34:32>> Right.
  951. 34:33>> And the data
  952. 34:35>> maybe 10 years before that
  953. 34:38when every team was trying to be the
  954. 34:40best they could be and you had all these
  955. 34:43equal teams reaching the postseason
  956. 34:46>> that the more even field
  957. 34:49Maybe it was more of a crapshoot, but in
  958. 34:52the last nine seasons,
  959. 34:55representing the American League in the
  960. 34:57World Series has been the team with the
  961. 35:00best record. And I think building a team
  962. 35:05just to get by and make the postseason.
  963. 35:08and not building the best team
  964. 35:12has obliterated the crapshoot because
  965. 35:14now seven out of nine of the best teams
  966. 35:18have won their league because they're
  967. 35:21one of the one or two trying to be the
  968. 35:24best team, right? So this very like
  969. 35:27philosophy of it's a crapshoot, make it
  970. 35:29a crapshoot. You just got to get in the
  971. 35:31dance has now the the level of playing
  972. 35:35field has skewed to like the Astros
  973. 35:38early in the decade where they weren't
  974. 35:40just trying to make the dance. They were
  975. 35:42trading for Verlander and they were
  976. 35:44trading for Grankkey and they were
  977. 35:45making the best team making the dagger
  978. 35:48moves because we don't want to be the
  979. 35:49best team in the regular season. We miss
  980. 35:50team playoffs. Whereas all the other
  981. 35:53teams like the 2022 Yankees did not make
  982. 35:57the best moves at the deadline to make
  983. 35:59sure they were over the [ __ ] top the
  984. 36:01best team. They just want to get in the
  985. 36:03dance and play the crapshoot game. Well,
  986. 36:04they didn't. They win.
  987. 36:06>> And same with the last year's this
  988. 36:09year's, you know what I mean? So, I
  989. 36:11think that the nerds have uh again I say
  990. 36:14nerds because they are nerds, right? I
  991. 36:16don't disparage against them. I'm a
  992. 36:17nerd, too. But the
  993. 36:20the front office ilk that are saying
  994. 36:23that have shifted the whole paradigm of
  995. 36:26like what works in the postseason. And
  996. 36:28guess what? Trying to be the best team
  997. 36:29you can be is now uh foolproof.
  998. 36:33>> Yeah. I I have to look more into that
  999. 36:36theory, but that's my running theory
  1000. 36:37now.
1001. 36:37>> It's a little old school. Try to be the
  1002. 36:39best team. Um, no. I I think it's funny
1003. 36:43and again I think like all these old
1004. 36:44sports things are coming back so I'm
  1005. 36:46almost excited, but I I think there's
  1006. 36:48truly only been
1007. 36:50like I do think if you go back in those
1008. 36:52old history like when when the geeks
1009. 36:54were starting to take over and again I I
  1010. 36:56kind of I I use geeks. It's impressive
1011. 36:59how smart some people can be, but
1012. 37:00sometimes you also go too far past logic
  1013. 37:02of like I don't know assembling the best
1014. 37:04team having all righties on the Yankees
  1015. 37:06anyways.
1016. 37:07>> You can overthink it.
1017. 37:08>> You can overthink it. Um, think, yeah, I
  1018. 37:11I think all of that's coming back. I I
1019. 37:13think that trying to win every day and
1020. 37:15how important that was in baseball and
  1021. 37:17hopefully, you know, I I think that's
1022. 37:19why teams are baseball fans should be
1023. 37:21rooed for the Brewers uh this this
  1024. 37:24postseason. Uh I I think stuff like that
1025. 37:27is just going to cycle back. Um, and I
1026. 37:30just my worry is with the big news at
1027. 37:33the press conference today being that
1028. 37:34Cashman is extended that the that what
1029. 37:39real change is going to happen? Like I I
1030. 37:42we we've noticed we notice that there
1031. 37:44are changes each and every year and that
1032. 37:46we're like I like I kind of like that
1033. 37:48one or oh I kind of like that one. The
1034. 37:49Yankees are balanced again. We did get
1035. 37:51more athletic after having those
1036. 37:52unathletic Yanks that they do
1037. 37:54acknowledge stuff. It just feels like
1038. 37:57it's a couple years late cuz other teams
1039. 37:59have already tried to be forward
1040. 38:01thinking and get ahead of it while the
1041. 38:02Yankees are like, "No, we believe in
1042. 38:04this. Let's hunker down cuz this does
1043. 38:06work. We know this works, right?" And
1044. 38:08then they get to the end of the year and
1045. 38:09they go, "Ah, it didn't work again."
  1046. 38:11Yeah.
1047. 38:11>> So, what do we need to change?
  1048. 38:13>> I think I and I've talked about this on
1049. 38:16the end of the year postgame. Cashman
1050. 38:19revamped the pitching department. You
1051. 38:20talked about Larry Rothschild and at
1052. 38:22that point the Yankees being very
1053. 38:23behind. Cashman, who leads all of that,
1054. 38:27he hired Matt Blake. He hired uh uh the
1055. 38:31program underneath him. He told them,
1056. 38:33"Go put it in place." Like, he oversaw
1057. 38:35that and and made that happen. They
1058. 38:38tried to do that on the hitting side.
1059. 38:40Talked about this. They hired Dylan
1060. 38:41Lawson. They went to the drive line. It
1061. 38:43sucked and the players didn't like it
1062. 38:46and they went away from that. And
1063. 38:50uh the guys coming up are developing
1064. 38:51different in the minor leagues. They
1065. 38:53have more contact oriented bats. They
1066. 38:54have more guys doing this. So like
  1067. 38:56they've slowly changed that
  1068. 38:57>> Lombard Jones.
1069. 38:59>> They have more athletes in the miners.
  1070. 39:00They It's um
  1071. 39:03it's the lineup construction
1072. 39:07and the skills at the bottom that I need
1073. 39:11them to figure out. You do not. And and
1074. 39:16Cashman kind of said, I forget what his
1075. 39:18quote was, but he was like, it was
1076. 39:19somewhat I think along the lines of like
  1077. 39:21slug wins.
1078. 39:22>> Oh, yeah. No, they're still in on that.
1079. 39:24And and if you think slug wins um
1080. 39:31without looking at what happens when a
  1081. 39:33slugger doesn't slug the ball
1082. 39:36like sure if Trent Gisham
  1083. 39:39hits a ball
1084. 39:41with great force that result is always
1085. 39:44going to be good but what happens when
  1086. 39:46he misses?
1087. 39:47Is he missing the homer and getting a
1088. 39:50single? Is he missing the homer and
1089. 39:51getting a foul ball? is he taking these
1090. 39:54pitches, spoiling those pitches and
1091. 39:55that's what they don't believe in under
  1092. 39:57the hood. They're just like results
1093. 40:01only and there is winning in the process
1094. 40:04and that and I think even I like OPS but
1095. 40:07even that is just a liar sometimes
1096. 40:09because it just it hypes up slug and you
  1097. 40:13have guys like Chandler Simpson who's a
1098. 40:15unicorn of one of his kind. But you have
1099. 40:17guys um that maybe their slugging is
1100. 40:19never going to be high, but they can
1101. 40:21still help a lineup of nine tremendously
1102. 40:26>> uh by getting on base, by seeing lots of
1103. 40:28pitches, by putting the ball in play, by
1104. 40:30being fast. Uh and in like they we
1105. 40:34thought we were going to get like that
  1106. 40:35in Vulpi doesn't happen. Like I need
1107. 40:37Lombard to not go the way they went.
1108. 40:41Vulpi and like I if he comes back
1109. 40:43putting on tons of muscle at the end of
1110. 40:44this year and like talking about how
  1111. 40:46much he's if like Vulpi's going to drive
  1112. 40:48line
  1113. 40:49>> I'll be pretty upset.
1114. 40:51>> Not Vulpi um Lombard like
  1115. 40:53>> either way
1116. 40:54>> we just don't need him to be that
1117. 40:55hitter. I'm not saying that no one
  1118. 40:57should.
1119. 40:58>> I'm saying like we don't need that guy
1120. 41:01to be that hitter. We need guys at the
1121. 41:03bottom that have different approaches.
  1122. 41:04And that's something that in Cashman's
  1123. 41:08uh time
1124. 41:11of late we have not seen. That's what
  1125. 41:13needs to click. And I don't know if it's
1126. 41:15hiring new personnel, overseeing it on
1127. 41:18the front office and the analytics of
1128. 41:20like who changing the the scouting
1129. 41:23process, but yeah, like a bat like Caleb
  1130. 41:25Durban, who I was [ __ ] giddy about
1131. 41:28before they traded him for Deon
1132. 41:29Williams, got a bad trade. uh he might
1133. 41:32not have the most overall impressive
  1134. 41:34numbers,
1135. 41:37but his underneath the hood stats could
1136. 41:41maybe help at the bottom of the lineup
1137. 41:43much more than McMahon. Much dude, much
  1138. 41:45more than McMahon. So that's that's the
1139. 41:47thinking I want them to try and figure
  1140. 41:49out.
1141. 41:50Yes. And I I think all of this just
1142. 41:53circles around assembling a team and and
1143. 41:56the the puzzle pieces have to fit
1144. 41:58together. And yes, it's really hard to
  1145. 42:00assemble a perfect team. Although,
1146. 42:02again, reminder, go through the Yankee
  1147. 42:04teams that won. They're pretty damn
1148. 42:06close. Go look at who's hitting eighth
1149. 42:07and ninth on those teams. Go look at who
1150. 42:10was hitting eighth and ninth on the
1151. 42:11Dodgers the past couple years. Like,
1152. 42:14again, what I see in our history is that
  1153. 42:16if we're going to assemble a good team,
1154. 42:17it it really has to be rock solid top to
1155. 42:20top to bottom. And hey, m maybe that is
1156. 42:23really hard. It's harder to do nowadays
1157. 42:25because the pitching is so elite. Well,
1158. 42:26you have to get close to that. And then
1159. 42:28if you have a McMahon or a Wells at the
1160. 42:31bottom of your lineup, well, you need to
1161. 42:34surround them with different pieces.
1162. 42:35Like if you're going to survive that,
1163. 42:38well, especially in a regular season and
  1164. 42:40more so in a postseason, you're going to
1165. 42:41need maybe a righty slap hitter around
1166. 42:43them that that makes the pitcher feel
1167. 42:45different so that when they do run into
1168. 42:47their one ball, it feels impactful. That
  1169. 42:50like it's it's about building a team and
1170. 42:52the puzzle pieces has to go have to go
1171. 42:54together. Um, I think uh one one of my
1172. 42:58other notes that I just want out there
1173. 43:00before because again like a lot of this
  1174. 43:03press conference started as a nightmare
1175. 43:04to all Yankee fans like just saying this
1176. 43:06was a championship team. It was not.
1177. 43:09It's still not confirmed. Uh, and you
  1178. 43:12guys don't really know. I don't know if
1179. 43:14you could speak on what a championship
1180. 43:15team is because you had one team go to
1181. 43:17the World Series in the past 16 years
1182. 43:19and they got embarrassed. So like you
  1183. 43:21can't say you've assembled a
1184. 43:23championship team and then even at Hal
1185. 43:25because I know he he got caught up in
1186. 43:27the you know is every year a success and
  1187. 43:30then we know what's a success and the
1188. 43:32mission is this and blah blah blah and
1189. 43:33it's all just kind of fodder after a
1190. 43:35certain point but you know he Hal said
1191. 43:37you know this year we didn't succeed the
  1192. 43:39mission and I know something that we've
1193. 43:41hung our hat on for going back to 2021
1194. 43:43like probably the most shocking press
1195. 43:45conference was them calling that year a
1196. 43:46success when they got to the one game
1197. 43:48>> said something like it is a success but
1198. 43:51and getting to the divisional series is
1199. 43:52always good but then the way we lost
  1200. 43:54right
1201. 43:54>> ruined everything. I was like oh okay
  1202. 43:56>> yeah it was a little
1203. 43:57>> that a season like this season is a
  1204. 43:59success. Uh I am often
  1205. 44:02so I have I have never suggested that a
1206. 44:05season like this season is a success. Uh
1207. 44:08I am often asked was the entire season a
  1208. 44:11failure. Winning 93 games is not a
1209. 44:14failure. I mean making playing in the
1210. 44:16division series is not a failure. it
1211. 44:19became a failure because we did not do
  1212. 44:21well. So would I have I ever called a
  1213. 44:24season success? No, I don't believe I've
  1214. 44:26ever called a season that we didn't win
  1215. 44:28a world championship in.
  1216. 44:29>> I don't think he has
1217. 44:29>> successful. But at the same time, I'm
1218. 44:31not going to say that everything that
1219. 44:32happened in that season, hence the
  1220. 44:34entire season was a complete failure.
  1221. 44:36>> I mean, that's that's just the way I I
  1222. 44:39perceive things.
  1223. 44:40>> Sure, there's difference between there's
1224. 44:41a middle ground between success and
  1225. 44:43failure. I I understand that. And yeah,
1226. 44:44I don't think Howal did it was I think
1227. 44:47and I don't even know if they did it
1228. 44:48publicly because that got spread through
1229. 44:50the media after 2021 that then they
1230. 44:55stopped talking to the media after that
1231. 44:56and blocking them and then then the the
1232. 44:59be reporters were kind of like yeah no
1233. 45:01they're mad because they say this was a
1234. 45:04success and blah blah right
  1235. 45:06>> but yeah I don't think
1236. 45:07>> might not have been his
  1237. 45:08>> I don't think has done that I think Cash
  1238. 45:10and Code did
1239. 45:11>> and Boon did to us one time
1240. 45:14>> and And then my other uh
1241. 45:17AL teams that have been to one World
  1242. 45:18Series since 2009, it's us. Same with
1243. 45:22the Blue Jays, Cleveland, and the
1244. 45:23Tigers. Teams that have been to
  1245. 45:25multiple.
1246. 45:26>> Those are the out of 15, there's only
1247. 45:27four that have been to one World Series
  1248. 45:29since 2009.
1249. 45:30>> Yes. But there's teams that have been to
  1250. 45:31multiple.
1251. 45:33Kansas City, Texas, Boston, Tampa, and
1252. 45:35Houston, who Houston considered to have
1253. 45:37a dynasty there for a little bit.
1254. 45:39>> Oh, so there's a lot of teams that have
  1255. 45:40been to zero.
  1256. 45:40>> Yes. But
  1257. 45:43>> the Orioles.
  1258. 45:45>> Yes.
  1259. 45:46>> Zero.
1260. 45:46>> Zero. Orioles. Tough franchise.
  1261. 45:50>> The White Socks.
  1262. 45:52>> Correct.
  1263. 45:54Tough. Tough franchise.
1264. 45:56>> Um the Royals have
  1265. 46:01>> Seattle.
  1266. 46:02>> The A's.
  1267. 46:03>> The A's.
  1268. 46:04>> Tough franchise.
  1269. 46:05>> Mariners.
  1270. 46:06>> Weird franchise.
  1271. 46:07>> Angels.
  1272. 46:08>> Tough franchise.
1273. 46:11Now the richest in all sports.
  1274. 46:13>> Yeah.
  1275. 46:17>> Well,
  1276. 46:18>> twins. Twins.
  1277. 46:21>> The Twinkies.
  1278. 46:22>> Nice guys.
1279. 46:24>> Uh I think Luis Garcia Jr. is going to
1280. 46:26be the second baseman as of now. It
1281. 46:28could be it could be a uh Andy Phelps,
1282. 46:32Bubba Crosby situation. Free agency
  1283. 46:34sucks besides like second base. There's
1284. 46:36a couple. One of them is Glabber. I
1285. 46:37don't think they're going to do that.
  1286. 46:38One of them is Jazz. I don't think
1287. 46:39they're going to do that
1288. 46:41>> at at minimum. Totally makes sense. Even
1289. 46:44if they don't actually plan on it at all
1290. 46:46to say you are, whether you're trying to
1291. 46:48trade him or trade for someone else at
1292. 46:50>> Well, they have to. Rice has to play
1293. 46:51first. At least talk like it's an
  1294. 46:53option.
1295. 46:54>> If Rice doesn't play first this year,
  1296. 46:57>> then your whole team's [ __ ] forever
1297. 47:00>> because Judge is the DH for the next
  1298. 47:01five years,
  1299. 47:04you know, assume.
1300. 47:04>> At least needs regular time.
1301. 47:05>> Yeah. Yeah. Soon. And if you don't prep
  1302. 47:07Rice to be a first baseman and you're
1303. 47:09saying he is going to be just a DH,
1304. 47:12your your lineup and your roster
  1305. 47:14construction, Rice should be on a
1306. 47:16defensive first base. He should go spend
1307. 47:18time with Don Maddingley. He should go
1308. 47:20spend time with Keith Hernandez. You
1309. 47:22should just spend you just hire
1310. 47:24everyone, Tino, and he should come back
1311. 47:26a Wizard and see if it's available to
1312. 47:28him. I think he should play as many
1313. 47:30innings as he can defensively in spring.
1314. 47:33Like Rice playing first base has to be
1315. 47:36the biggest mission because Judge has a
1316. 47:39DH. You can't afford to lose him. You
1317. 47:41cannot afford to lose him. Well, yeah.
  1318. 47:43And that's where I I also wondered if
1319. 47:48uh because Kashman had one line like
1320. 47:50currently assembled or something like
1321. 47:52that that you know could Garcia be
1322. 47:54another trade again piece or like what
1323. 47:56what else could be on the table because
1324. 47:58as as they talked about oh the other
1325. 48:00thing that the other thing that made me
1326. 48:02mad he says um one of one of Cashman's
1327. 48:05first words out of his mouth are how
1328. 48:06much we value contact and it's like
1329. 48:08that's still kind of not true um because
1330. 48:11you finished 26 six in batting average
  1331. 48:14was it?
  1332. 48:14>> Yeah. I mean, yeah,
  1333. 48:16>> that like
1334. 48:16>> they don't know how to get it. We love
  1335. 48:18it. We I love gold, right?
1336. 48:20>> If you know where to find it, well,
1337. 48:22>> let me know. Um, but yeah, I I they made
1338. 48:25it seem very clear like that's on the
1339. 48:27table. And if it is, all right. Like I I
1340. 48:30would say form a team identity. Like if
1341. 48:31you're going to be the Yankees that
1342. 48:32don't play defense, all right, we'll go
  1343. 48:34get me a third baseman who's a Mer 2 and
  1344. 48:37like like
  1345. 48:39>> don't say that because then they're
1346. 48:40going to go get Suarez and then we're
  1347. 48:43the same [ __ ]
  1348. 48:44>> They won't do that.
1349. 48:45>> An old guy who can hit homers but can't
  1350. 48:47play defense.
1351. 48:49>> Minor league invite. Um
  1352. 48:51>> for sure.
  1353. 48:52>> But yeah,
1354. 48:52>> they got Josh Donald.
1355. 48:54>> I'd still rather do that and have an
1356. 48:55identity. Like at least you believe in
1357. 48:57something and you're going to follow it.
1358. 48:58>> I mean they h they they have an
  1359. 49:00identity. It's three true outcome. It's
  1360. 49:02homer, walk, strikeout.
1361. 49:03>> Not this year, man. Their 24th on base
  1362. 49:05percentage like
1363. 49:07>> Okay. Sorry. Their identity is homer.
  1364. 49:11>> Yeah.
1365. 49:14Correct. And play out of position. I
  1366. 49:18mean, no. I think no one
1367. 49:22Jazz not having a great season is
1368. 49:24brutal. McMahon and Trent were not. You
1369. 49:29can't say you didn't see that coming.
1370. 49:31The writing was on the wall that Trent
1371. 49:33wasn't going to repeat a unicorn season.
  1372. 49:35And same with Wells,
1373. 49:37>> and I know Wells had a good end of the
  1374. 49:38year.
1375. 49:39>> Catcher, center field, third base,
  1376. 49:45>> second base,
  1377. 49:47and then
1378. 49:49rookie at short stop, Vulpi at shortstop
  1379. 49:53this year.
  1380. 49:55Next year, Lombard
  1381. 49:56>> last year.
  1382. 49:57>> Oh. Cabierro.
1383. 49:59>> Caviierro Vulpi Lombard was your short
  1384. 50:01stop.
1385. 50:02>> First baseman who can't play first.
1386. 50:04>> Free free agency is going to is an awful
  1387. 50:07mess this year.
1388. 50:10And then the lockout's coming. They need
1389. 50:12to go trade for one of the Marlins to be
  1390. 50:14a second baseman.
  1391. 50:17Kind of a a must. We can do a whole
  1392. 50:20season program. We'll do a lot of
  1393. 50:22episodes.
  1394. 50:23>> Uh I don't know where they find a third
  1395. 50:25baseman at all.
  1396. 50:27get creative.
1397. 50:29Only only other thing that I guess
1398. 50:31should be addressed in the nature of
1399. 50:32like what news came out of this pretty
1400. 50:35healthy no surprise injuries, no
1401. 50:37surgeries scheduled is worth mentioning
1402. 50:40on this episode about the press
  1403. 50:41conference.
  1404. 50:42>> They did.
1405. 50:44They were like the good news is Stanton
  1406. 50:45finished the season healthy. He's going
1407. 50:47to be healthy for the offseason. Oh,
  1408. 50:48great.
  1409. 50:50>> What good news?
  1410. 50:52>> There was uh
1411. 50:53>> he should go barnstorming. I think it
  1412. 50:55was Boone
  1413. 50:56>> in Japan.
1414. 50:57>> Did Boon say the line, "Stanton's
1415. 50:59heading into the offseason healthy?"
1416. 51:01>> They they so did Cashman.
  1417. 51:02>> Yeah.
1418. 51:03>> They were like, "So that's good. He
  1419. 51:04finished the season healthy. He's
1420. 51:05heading into the offseason healthy."
1421. 51:06>> They said it through gritted teeth.
  1422. 51:07>> It's like And I love that for G.
  1423. 51:09>> Yeah.
1424. 51:09>> You know, and they talked about how much
1425. 51:11G is a New Yorker and made to be here.
  1426. 51:12Well,
1427. 51:13>> and isn't that so funny that they like
  1428. 51:15ooze about that? They're like G has
1429. 51:17whatever it is. It's like, well, find
1430. 51:19other guys. Like they don't have to all
1431. 51:21be 6'3 bodybuilders who won MVPs, but
1432. 51:24there's other guys that want New York
  1433. 51:25City.
  1434. 51:26>> G didn't have that his first couple
