5. 0:10choked kicked and hit by someone who
6. 0:13claimed to love you and the only person
7. 0:17you can trust is just 8 months old for
8. 0:21Carol there was no question she had to
9. 0:23find a way out her boyfriend was
10. 0:26dangerous and unpredictable he
11. 0:28threatened her with a par of pliers
12. 0:30saying he would kill her and take away
13. 0:33their baby if she went to the
14. 0:36police the only question was how would
15. 0:39she Break Free or would getting out mean
16. 0:43getting killed domestic violence
17. 0:46victimizes thousands of women and their
18. 0:49families each year fortunately for Carol
19. 0:52she found help through the ywca's court
20. 0:56advocacy program Carol learned about
21. 0:58protection from abuse orders she was
22. 1:01assigned to a YWCA case manager who
23. 1:04helped Carol establish goals such as
24. 1:07finding employment seeking counseling
25. 1:09enrolling her son in child care and
26. 1:12reclaiming her life after 4 months in
27. 1:16the YW shelter Carol realized that she
28. 1:19and her son could live a good life on
29. 1:21their own she has moved to the ywca's
30. 1:24transitional housing apartment and her
31. 1:27son now attends the ywca's kid Kids in
32. 1:30Distress child care center Carol now has
33. 1:33a good job as a laboratory assistant at
34. 1:36UAB but the effects of her abuse are
35. 1:39something she continues to work at she
36. 1:41still attends support groups for
37. 1:43domestic violence victims at the YWCA
38. 1:46and follows a safety plan provided by
39. 1:49the YW to maintain her safety to the
40. 1:52best of her ability Carol still worries
41. 1:55about her son she never wants him to be
42. 1:58put in a position where he has to see
43. 2:00his mother beaten down all she wants is
44. 2:03for him to be proud of his mom and to
45. 2:06grow up without an abusive father as a
46. 2:08role model so he can have a normal life
47. 2:11Carol has some pretty big plans for
48. 2:13herself too she says she wants to be a
49. 2:16meteorologist and a published author and
50. 2:19be living on the coast in 5 years we
51. 2:22know she can do it
