- 0:00life is such a roller coaster I remember
- 0:02being very emotional on that Australia
- 0:05Grand Prix Podium because there was my
- 0:08dad there there was obviously my manager
- 0:10my girlfriend everyone who's been next
- 0:13to me I was obviously thinking about my
- 0:14mom and they've all seen me suffer
- 0:17during the winter and when I say suffer
- 0:19I don't mean I was crying behind closed
- 0:22doors but I was actually hurt I was hurt
- 0:26because I didn't expect it I remember
- 0:28after that win and in Australia thinking
- 0:32about how lucky I am to have the people
- 0:35that I have around me supporting me and
- 0:36giving me that inner uh strength you
- 0:39know to to overcome what it was at the
- 0:41time um a tough moment that now when I
- 0:44look back at it I'm almost like happy uh
- 0:47proud that it happened because it made
- 0:50me a much better driver and a much
- 0:52better athlete in general this episode

- 1:01Travel welcome everyone to this week's
- 1:04F1 Beyond The Grid and I'm delighted to
- 1:07say that we are joined by Carlos science
- 1:09Carlos great to see you how are you all
- 1:12good thank you everything okay well is
- 1:14everything okay because we've just got
- 1:15off the long flight from Las Vegas uh
- 1:18it's tiring I'm certainly jet lagged how
- 1:20are you yeah as good as I can be I guess
- 1:23everyone at this stage of the year is
- 1:24running a bit low on batteries uh I
- 1:27think it's normal when they put you a
- 1:29back back to back Las Vegas Qatar you're
- 1:31always going to get to this end of the
- 1:33year a bit tired but um I've been
- 1:36dealing well with jetti this year I've
- 1:38been dealing well with my energy levels
- 1:40towards the second half of the Season
- 1:42better compared to last year I did a few
- 1:44changes on my training plan and my and
- 1:47my season management to get to this end
- 1:50of the year with a bit higher batteries
- 1:52and they seem to be paying off so do we
- 1:54have Pierre Luigi de Laona to thank for
- 1:57this your new physio yeah H together
- 1:59between Pier Luigi and my trainer Also
- 2:04let's say performance coach back at home
- 2:07uh we've put together a plan that it
- 2:09seems to be working well and uh I'm glad
- 2:11to say that uh all those hours of
- 2:13cycling and um different diets jet like
- 2:18management and different training plans
- 2:20are are paying off this year you've been
- 2:21keeping those guys busier than most this
- 2:24year because I'm thinking of the
- 2:26appendicitis in Saudi Arabia then there
- 2:29was there's all the travel there was the
- 2:31crash in Baku as well they've obviously
- 2:33got some magic potions yeah I think um
- 2:38investing on a good team around you is
- 2:39the best thing that a sportsman can do
- 2:41um because it's not on the day-to-day
- 2:44basis where you get to feel those things
- 2:46but it's mainly when something big or
- 2:49when something out of the ordinary
- 2:50happens like the situation in in
- 2:54Australia with appendicitis and the
- 2:56situation with with the crash in Baku
- 2:59that's when when you realize and you
- 3:01notice whether you have a good team
- 3:03around you or not and uh I feel like
- 3:05this year I'm very proud very happy to
- 3:07to have the team I have and it's paid
- 3:09off in the in the key moments of the
- 3:10Year well let's talk about that key
- 3:12moment you mentioned so you have an
- 3:15appendectomy in Saudi Arabia two weeks
- 3:19later you win in Melbourne just tell us
- 3:22now how marginal was it what kind of
- 3:25physical shape were you in so to give
- 3:27you an idea the seven day
- 3:30after uh the append appendi toy you
- 3:33called it oh yeah yeah I didn't move
- 3:36from bed I was seven straight days in
- 3:38bed and I couldn't brace I couldn't use
- 3:41my core every time I sneezed or every
- 3:44time I coughed I was crying on pain
- 3:46because they open your abdominal muscles
- 3:50and that every time you contract them it
- 3:52really really hurts uh so for 7 days
- 3:55apart from going to a hiperbaric chamber
- 3:58and receiving some Mass Mage I wasn't
- 4:00moving from my bed from day eight I had
- 4:03to catch a flight to Australia but I
- 4:05still hadn't moveed from bed so I was
- 4:07catching a flight to Australia like I
- 4:10remember leaving home still uh on pain
- 4:13and telling my mom well here I go I
- 4:16don't I'm going all the way to Australia
- 4:18without even knowing if I'm going to be
- 4:20racing and
- 4:21then I tell her something like imagine
- 4:25if I win if I go and then I end up
- 4:27winning and we had a laugh about it like
- 4:29well let's try and race first and then
- 4:31see if you can actually win it and um my
- 4:34mom was reminding me that after the win
- 4:36that I left home saying imagine if I
- 4:38actually win and uh since then I
- 4:41actually realized how life can change so
- 4:44quickly no you go from not even knowing
- 4:46if you're going to race in Australia
- 4:47catching a flight 24-hour flight to
- 4:50suddenly 6 days later winning in
- 4:52Australia and I remember that was one of
- 4:54the most powerful feeling moments in in
- 4:57my life and so much of dra driving one
- 5:00of these cars is your core so how
- 5:02difficult was it when you were in the
- 5:04car so I remember on Wednesday uh before
- 5:07jumping into the car I went to a circuit
- 5:09I normally don't go to circuits on
- 5:10Wednesdays but in Australia I did and I
- 5:14had a look at my seat had I look at my
- 5:16belts and said okay action plan I need
- 5:18to protect these wounds because I still
- 5:21had the very thick scars and and I was
- 5:24still having to take care of them um I
- 5:27brought also a special fish specialize
- 5:30in an indiva machine that gives you
- 5:32electromagnetic uh impulses to recover
- 5:35the the the wound faster I we still went
- 5:38to hyperb Chambers in Australia to try
- 5:40and recover faster so I had a plan just
- 5:42to make it happen but on Wednesday I
- 5:44still thought I don't think I'm going to
- 5:46be able to race at that point I call
- 5:48Alex Alor I said look I know you had the
- 5:51appendicitis at some stage a couple of
- 5:53years ago what did you do to your belts
- 5:55Alex came gave me a hand and showed me
- 5:57what he did to his belts what did he do
- 6:00loosen them h no you just protect the
- 6:03Buckle the Buckle of the belt because
- 6:05that's exactly where the wound is so you
- 6:08just put some foam around it so you are
- 6:09not on the metal of the Buckle and uh he
- 6:12helped me with that I put some extra
- 6:14foam here and there and then on Thursday
- 6:17I went back to the TRU and I said tried
- 6:20it again I was starting to move a bit
- 6:22better but then I realize every time I
- 6:24was jumping in and out of the car I was
- 6:26very slow and I was very scared and of
- 6:29doing any strange movements and I was
- 6:31just not feeling confident and when I
- 6:34jumped in the car on Friday my first
- 6:36three laps I've never drove so bad a
- 6:39Formula One car in my life because I
- 6:42just didn't trust that I could brace so
- 6:45I hadn't brace for more than 10 11 days
- 6:48when I mean brace means Contracting all
- 6:50your muscles to hold the to hold the G
- 6:52the gForce and I remember going into
- 6:55turn one on the first push laap and not
- 6:58hitting the break hard because I didn't
- 7:00want a brace for 5G that a Formula 1
- 7:02produces and I was hitting the brakes 30
- 7:05bar instead of 120 that I do normally
- 7:07know and um it was that when we saw you
- 7:10go across the grass or not I can't I
- 7:12think so I think and I first thing I
- 7:14told my team after the first run is I
- 7:16need a softer brake pedal I I normally
- 7:18run a very hard very stiff brake pedal I
- 7:22say can we change very quickly the pivot
- 7:24of the pedal first thing we did change
- 7:26the pedal for for the race and I was
- 7:29driving a much softer pedal because I
- 7:31couldn't push it as hard then I had to
- 7:33adap to a softer pedal from fp1 then I
- 7:36started getting a bit confident and
- 7:39little by little I started pushing the
- 7:40limits but it was not a comfortable not
- 7:43a comfortable Friday let's say I was a
- 7:45bit of the pace also what about Sunday
- 7:47how angry was the wound on Sunday night
- 7:50it was fine it just got better the worst
- 7:52day was Friday by far uh the thing that
- 7:55I went into Sunday was okay so far I've
- 7:58done maybe 10 10 15 consecutive laps in
- 8:01one day I don't know how Sunday is going
- 8:04to go by doing 50 something consecutive
- 8:07consecutive labs and then I also
- 8:10remember having this feeling of being a
- 8:12bit more scared to crash like normally
- 8:14in NF1 I never ever thought about I'm
- 8:18scared of crashing but I remember on
- 8:20Friday Saturday and even Sunday having
- 8:22this feeling like if I crash at 30 40
- 8:2550g that is a average Formula 1 crash
- 8:29how I going to brace if I cannot really
- 8:31fully fully fully brace because I don't
- 8:34I I I hope that my muscles yet take take
- 8:38care of it you know and and protect when
- 8:40you when you brace and I've never had
- 8:42this feeling but it's yeah not a
- 8:44comfortable feeling to have when you
- 8:45drive an one car did you surprise
- 8:48yourself that weekend 100% but I think
- 8:53the rather than me surprising myself the
- 8:56human body surprised me like how the
- 8:58human body can go from within six days
- 9:02from not moving to actually driving a
- 9:05Formula One car and how you recover
- 9:07obviously I give credit to my team uh
- 9:10for giving me advices of what to do to
- 9:13recover faster I give credit obviously
- 9:15to myself to put in all that working but
- 9:18the human body truly amazed me that week
- 9:21and I said yeah this is a an interesting
- 9:25case because I went through everything
- 9:27to suddenly actually per for at a high
- 9:30level on on on that Sunday I wonder if
- 9:32you found an inner confidence that
- 9:35weekend hear me out because I felt
- 9:38Melbourne summed up 2024 for you it was
- 9:41the moment that you became this
- 9:44Unstoppable Force because no amount of
- 9:47adversity was going to stop you that
- 9:49weekend fast forward two races China you
- 9:53have a crash in Q2 quite a big one but
- 9:55you get back out in Q3 and qualified
- 9:58within a hundredth of your teammate
- 10:00Charla CLA I don't know there was
- 10:02there's just this
- 10:03inner confidence I feel that has Shone
- 10:06through ever since do you see that or am
- 10:09I just it's a overthinking it no I think
- 10:13it's a good point I think for sure life
- 10:16tests you and I think at the beginning
- 10:18of the year of
- 10:192024 I was tested more than I've ever
- 10:22been tested before and life put me in a
- 10:25situation that was not comfortable at
- 10:27all um I was told told in I think it was
- 10:30the end of January beginning of February
- 10:32that I was not going to continue with a
- 10:34team that I was 99% sure I was going to
- 10:37continue going into that winter it was a
- 10:40massive shock to my to my hopes and to
- 10:43my whole system and I obviously didn't
- 10:47enjoy that that moment I still trained
- 10:50and I still prepared for that season
- 10:52targeting obviously to to to be ready to
- 10:55win races to win a championship is the
- 10:58the opportunity presented itself and I
- 11:01went into that year still full of energy
- 11:03but obviously with this uncomfortable
- 11:05situation and uncomfortable um moment no
- 11:09I still did that podium in Bahrain and I
- 11:12said okay um now I get the season going
- 11:14I had a really good first race and
- 11:17sometimes I remember struggling a bit in
- 11:18Bahrain and this year I did a really
- 11:20good Bahrain I said I think I'm I'm
- 11:22quite strong this year and I can get
- 11:25this this season going then you arrive
- 11:27to Saudi and you have the a pen dick toy
- 11:30or whatever you call it and that was a
- 11:32massive blow because now I'm going to
- 11:34miss a race am I going to even miss two
- 11:36races am I going to come back to the
- 11:39form I was in Bahrain is it going to
- 11:41take me time you go through this full
- 11:44process of Doubt know of self-doubt and
- 11:47then you go back to Australia and you
- 11:49win and then you have this crash in
- 11:51China and you recover all things that
- 11:54help build a lot my confidence and prove
- 11:57to me that when you have a Target in
- 11:59your head and you are 100% committed to
- 12:03proving to yourself more than anyone
- 12:05what you're
- 12:06worth the the mind is a very powerful
- 12:09tool to to overcome this and I truly
- 12:12enjoyed that first half of the season
- 12:14for for all those things Jackie Stewart
- 12:16has always said that a driver is at his
- 12:19Peak at the age of 30 you are 30 do you
- 12:23feel at the peak of your powers I don't
- 12:25know I think
- 12:27there's something around the age of 30
- 12:30for sure that you achieve a level of
- 12:33maturity speed and experience that for
- 12:35sure is at a good level I think some
- 12:37drivers will achieve it at 26 others at
- 12:3932 but if you want to do an average 30
- 12:42sounds like a good number I think anyway
- 12:45that average no disrespect to Sir Yaki
- 12:49of course but keeps lowering every year
- 12:51no because we see younger and younger
- 12:53younger drivers be more prepared earlier
- 12:56which means you're picking earlier no
- 12:58but uh I think so that pick can last
- 13:00longer because uh the way we are
- 13:02prepared nowadays and the world the way
- 13:05the world has developed I think you can

- 14:47ago about the news that Lewis Hamilton
- 14:50was going to replace you at Ferrari can
- 14:52we talk about the emotional roller
- 14:54coaster that you've been on since that
- 14:57news broke at the beginning of January
- 15:00yeah I think I said it on the radio in
- 15:02Australia know this life is such a
- 15:04roller coaster I remember being very
- 15:07emotional on that Australia Grand Prix
- 15:10Podium because there was my dad there
- 15:12there was obviously my manager my
- 15:14girlfriend everyone who's been next to
- 15:17me I was obviously thinking about my mom
- 15:19and they've all seen me suffer during
- 15:21the winter and when I say suffer I don't
- 15:23mean I was crying behind closed doors
- 15:26but I was actually hurt I was hurt
- 15:30because I didn't expect it I didn't ER I
- 15:33wasn't prepared for for that kind of
- 15:35news and and yeah I was a bit in a shock
- 15:39for for a while and then I I regroup and
- 15:42got training again but yeah I I remember
- 15:45after that win um in Australia thinking
- 15:49about how lucky I am to have the people
- 15:52that I have around me supporting me and
- 15:54giving me that inner uh strength you
- 15:56know to to overcome what it was at the
- 15:58time I'm um a tough moment that now when
- 16:01I look back at it I'm almost like happy
- 16:05proud that it happened because it made
- 16:07me a much better driver and a much
- 16:09better athlete in general you talk about
- 16:12the shock of that news was there ever
- 16:15anger uh for sure and I could sit here
- 16:18and say no I wasn't angry with with
- 16:20anyone but at the time when they give
- 16:23you this news you you're angry you you
- 16:25don't understand it
- 16:26you yeah you Cur you you don't
- 16:31understand anything that that has
- 16:32happened to you and obviously you think
- 16:34everything in your life is terrible and
- 16:36you don't understand but then time cures
- 16:38everything and you start to accept
- 16:41certain things and you try to see
- 16:44everything with a lot more of a relative
- 16:46mind no and and you start to comprehend
- 16:49and to just adapt and forgive and forget
- 16:53you know and and get on with life just
- 16:55get on with it I remember keep I kept
- 16:57telling myself now get on with it and
- 17:00and just do your thing and um yeah it is
- 17:04it is something that you need to see
- 17:05more relative as time goes by forgive
- 17:09forget do you now understand as well
- 17:13100% um and I think understand I
- 17:15understood it almost right from the
- 17:17beginning uh I think if it would have
- 17:20been someone else I would have taken a
- 17:23lot more longer to understand but when
- 17:26you understand Lis Hamilton seven time
- 17:29world champion and one of the best if
- 17:32not the best in history is going to
- 17:33replace you as Ferrari and Lis has
- 17:35decided to do his last part of his
- 17:37career in Ferrari and you need to be one
- 17:40of the two driver sacrifice for that to
- 17:42happen I understand I also understand it
- 17:46was never going to be Charles Charles
- 17:47has been the the the project of Ferrari
- 17:50ever since he's been a junior driver
- 17:52he's been the center of of the project
- 17:54for many years I arrived to Ferrari more
- 17:56as a substitute of battle still almost a
- 18:00bit a not by chance but obviously
- 18:02earning my plays but circumstantial
- 18:06rather r shal that has been there
- 18:08forever so I I understood I had to be in
- 18:12in a way the the one being replaced and
- 18:15yeah I I understood it from the
- 18:17beginning I just obviously didn't agree
- 18:20so much at the time but hey you you know
- 18:22you you end up agreeing and you end up
- 18:25getting on with it are you leaving on
- 18:27good terms
- 18:29yeah 100% I even with with Fred with
- 18:34John Elan with with everyone in involved
- 18:37obviously in that decision obviously I
- 18:40called them I express they called me I
- 18:42express my feelings about it and but did
- 18:45you tell them what you really thought
- 18:47yeah of course but um me that things
- 18:50I've never backed off you know I've
- 18:52always said this is what I think the the
- 18:56same way that I told them I understood
- 18:57it then I explain
- 18:59obviously my my feelings um I'm not
- 19:01going to tell you here what I said
- 19:04probably that's something I'm never
- 19:05going to say but uh I told them what I
- 19:08thought and moved on and promised them
- 19:10that I was going to give my absolute
- 19:12best for Ferrari even even though all
- 19:14this has happen in the last year and I
- 19:15was going to keep proving to them that
- 19:18I'm still a a big asset for Ferrari you
- 19:20know and that's what I've been focusing
- 19:22on doing ever since G hard Berger left
- 19:25Ferrari went back Kimmy reiken left
- 19:28Ferrari went back could you see a time
- 19:30that Carlos Saints goes back yeah why
- 19:33not um I don't see why not at the same
- 19:37time I cannot see it happening anytime
- 19:40soon for the moment and but yeah life is
- 19:43long I'm 30 as you say you see drivers
- 19:46at 42 so in Formula 1 so if I am in
- 19:52Formula 1 for as long as that who tells
- 19:54you that in this next 10 years um
- 19:58Ferrari might need my services again in
- 20:00the future this doesn't mean um I wish
- 20:04for it to happen or I'm looking forward
- 20:06to it or anything like that I have um a
- 20:08very big Target in my head now which is
- 20:11help Williams uh to to bring in bring
- 20:15them back to the to the front of the
- 20:16field but I yeah I don't think about it
- 20:20too much we'll come to Williams in a
- 20:22minute but Abu Dhabi is going to be your
- 20:2588th race for Ferrari can can you just
- 20:29give us some words on how you feel these
- 20:31four years have
- 20:33gone I think it's been four years where
- 20:38if you would have told me four years ago
- 20:42I would be leaving Ferrari achieving my
- 20:45first wins uh the way those wins came 20
- 20:49something
- 20:50podiums I think I would have taking
- 20:53taking it I said before arriving to
- 20:55Ferrari that my target was to become
- 20:57world champion
- 20:59we still have a a Target that is that we
- 21:03might achieve it which is the
- 21:04Constructor Championship that would be a
- 21:06huge thing before I leave so I cannot be
- 21:09100% happy with the way things have gone
- 21:12because in those four years I would have
- 21:14loved to to fight for our world
- 21:16championship become world champion but
- 21:19hey look I'm living with my first wins
- 21:21in Formula 1 my first um 20 something
- 21:25podiums and I cannot complain I've been
- 21:28a Ferrari driver for four years I've
- 21:29enjoyed every single moment of it I've
- 21:31always feel loved by the Tios I've
- 21:35enjoyed every single moment in maranelo
- 21:38in fiorano traveling the world with
- 21:41wearing my Ferrari Polo you know and I
- 21:44have no regrets and F feel quite proud
- 21:47about it how different is the Ferrari
- 21:49experience to to that of any other team
- 21:52it's a very special experience it's
- 21:54something that even if I sit here and I
- 21:57try to explain it to you I don't think I
- 21:59can I'm not very good at explaining
- 22:01myself or explaining my feelings and but
- 22:03um I can tell you is something very
- 22:06different to ever anything that I felt
- 22:09before um and I've enjoyed every single
- 22:12moment of it sometimes it's tough
- 22:13there's things about being a Ferrari
- 22:15driver that is also tough and I'm not
- 22:18going to lie it's not everything is
- 22:20roses and and perfect but I'm struggling
- 22:23to see what's bad about being a Ferrari
- 22:25driver there's I'm going to f focus on
- 22:28the positives which is everything
- 22:32um every Grand Prix is kind of a home
- 22:35Grand Prix H everywhere you go there
- 22:38isosy fans H and you have the most
- 22:41supporters out of any other place in or
- 22:45any other team except maybe when we go
- 22:47to to sort there's definitely more Dutch
- 22:51fans there than Ferrar fans but I think
- 22:53anywhere else in the
- 22:55world it is very special knowing that
- 22:57everyone in the grand sand is kind of a
- 23:00Ferrari fan and wish is well for Ferrari
- 23:02know um on the tough side we can sit
- 23:05here and obviously do a different
- 23:08podcast one time and I can maybe explain
- 23:09to you what I what is tough about being
- 23:11a Ferrari driver but I don't want this
- 23:14interview to to to be that I think it's
- 23:16all positives okay let's celebrate the
- 23:19wins which has been the best
- 23:22one it's very tough to choose um and I'm
- 23:27going to explain you why
- 23:29Silverstone is your first one the first
- 23:32one is the first one is incredibly
- 23:34special and and something that you will
- 23:36never
- 23:37forget Singapore you can understand why
- 23:40Singapore was special the first the best
- 23:43you think is the best okay perfect we've
- 23:46just talked about Australia I can tell
- 23:47you why Australia was special and why it
- 23:50was emotional um because of everything
- 23:53that happened in January the way I
- 23:55recovered from appendicitis and
- 23:57culminating with the wi
- 23:59but then you have Mexico and Mexico
- 24:01might be my last win for Ferrari um and
- 24:06the way I achieved it by putting myself
- 24:09under pressure that weend knowing that
- 24:11might be my last opportunity and I
- 24:14thought myself this is going to be or
- 24:17this might be your one of your last
- 24:19opportunities I'm putting myself under
- 24:20pressure that weend and managing to
- 24:23execute a perfect quality perfect race
- 24:26in front of my parents that came to see
- 24:28me that weekend in front of my best
- 24:31friends girlfriend and and people that
- 24:33came to see me I've felt really proud of
- 24:37saying I managed to put myself under
- 24:40this amount of pressure and still
- 24:41deliver and and get it done and and
- 24:44overtake Max for stappen yeah yeah the
- 24:46overtake for sure was was cool but it
- 24:49was more the way I executed the whole
- 24:50weekend putting my putting myself under
- 24:54that self- pressure of this might be
- 24:56your last one another big moment for you
- 24:59at least from the outside seemed to be
- 25:01Monza 23 you didn't win that one but you
- 25:04did keep Max in a faster car behind you
- 25:07for I think 14
- 25:09laps yeah it um I I actually feel almost
- 25:14more more happy about the pole position
- 25:17on Saturday than by keeping Max behind I
- 25:19think the poll position in Mons as a
- 25:21Ferrari driver is something very very
- 25:23special and also because I love mon as a
- 25:26track and I love I've always been quick
- 25:28there and keeping Max behind knowing he
- 25:32was anyway going to pass me because Red
- 25:34Bull that year were
- 25:35Unstoppable um wa they were not I beat
- 25:38them in Singapore I'm joking but uh yeah
- 25:42what happens when you take poll at
- 25:43monster I mean obviously you don't pay
- 25:45for dinner that night and probably many
- 25:47offers of marriage as well I don't know
- 25:49just is it does it does your life go
- 25:51completely mad when you do something
- 25:53like that yeah I've always dreamed about
- 25:55that moment and obviously I cannot
- 25:58imagine how Charles feels about winning
- 26:00no in monsa because if I felt good being
- 26:02on the podium in monsa and making that
- 26:04PO position winning must be something
- 26:06else but um I don't know it was just a
- 26:09cool weekend I remember
- 26:11people shouting my name in the podium is
- 26:14something I'm never going to forget is
- 26:16the typical story that when I'm 70 years
- 26:19old and and I have grandsons I is the
- 26:22typical weekend thing that I'll remember
- 26:25all my life and I'll be telling them
- 26:27about that your dad your granddad did
- 26:30that you know and he they will have
- 26:32listened to this they'll be all over it
- 26:34I I think so but that's something really
- 26:36cool you know that's the kind of thing I
- 26:37think we all as a as a driver that's the
- 26:41kind of thing you remember know those
- 26:42special weekends those different things
- 26:44that you've managed to do look you
- 26:46mentioned Char's name there I did want
- 26:48to ask you about the relationship with
- 26:50him um you seem to have rubbed along
- 26:53pretty well it's not quite carando
- 26:55though would you agree I think it's the
- 26:58different I think carlando never fought
- 27:00for wins and never fought for podiums
- 27:03and carlando was not in a Ferrari
- 27:06atmosphere it was in a McLaren
- 27:07atmosphere which is relatively different
- 27:11um with Charles I can tell you outside
- 27:13of the truck we get on genuinely really
- 27:16well and we have a lot of fun really
- 27:18good
- 27:19conversations we talked about I think
- 27:22any subject you can ever imagine by by
- 27:25now with all the time we spend away from
- 27:27the truck together on track we've had
- 27:30our differences we've had our rivalries
- 27:33we've had our great weekends our tougher
- 27:35weekends but um we've always managed to
- 27:38keep it clean between us and we've
- 27:40always managed to keep the car without
- 27:43any scratch from the other Ferrari car
- 27:45you know and for two drivers that for
- 27:49four years in a row every single weekend
- 27:52have shared the same piece of tarmac
- 27:54because we've always qualified within a
- 27:56tenth of each other we've we' done every
- 27:58start within a position or two from each
- 28:01other we every Pit Stop every single lap
- 28:05close to each other for four years in a
- 28:08row to manage to keep it as clean as
- 28:10we've kept it and as relatively easy
- 28:13going as we've kept it I think
- 28:16it's there's a merit to that because
- 28:19it's not easy we're both very
- 28:22competitive we are both Rivals and yeah
- 28:26four years it's a lot of races I'm
- 28:29calculating more or less almost 100
- 28:31races sharing the same piece of tarmac
- 28:33and it's not easy and I don't think as
- 28:36many drivers have gone for so long so
- 28:39close to each other without any issues
- 28:42it seems very intense between you just
- 28:45think back to the Sprint race in China
- 28:48I'm thinking of Austin I'm even thinking
- 28:50of Las Vegas last weekend actually
- 28:53where I mean have you guys moved on from
- 28:55that one okay yes and we will and we
- 28:58will move on we we always have and we
- 29:01will always put our differences aside
- 29:03for the benefit of Ferrari and because
- 29:06there's something bigger than each other
- 29:08that is Ferrari you know it's it's
- 29:12always been tough uh I know I've uh
- 29:15sometimes done things wrong and I've
- 29:17apologized he knows he's sometimes done
- 29:19things wrong and he's apologized we
- 29:21always find kind of a middle ground to
- 29:23move on and yeah you know I think radio
- 29:28Stone help makes things bigger than what
- 29:31it looks then when we go back and we sit
- 29:33down with each other and we let's say
- 29:36digest together what what has happened
- 29:39because the radio is very intense the
- 29:41radio is something that from home and
- 29:44and for the media is very sassy you know
- 29:46you you you get all the intensity of the
- 29:50driver of the how sorry for the word how
- 29:53of we are at the time and how angry we
- 29:56are but then once that level of
- 29:59adrenaline comes down and when we are
- 30:01behind closed doors things are a lot
- 30:03less heated than what you guys can
- 30:06imagine and we managed to to put things
- 30:09aside and and move on do you understand
- 30:11why charl was so upset after Vegas I'm
- 30:15thinking of his radio message on the
- 30:16Slowdown lap I understand the level of
- 30:20anger uh I've been as angry as that many
- 30:24many times before and I can assure you
- 30:27I've also been in that position I just
- 30:31try not to vocalize it as much in the
- 30:34radio and it's something that we've both
- 30:36really put it as a Target to say look I
- 30:38know many times you just hate me you
- 30:41know and many times I just and we laugh
- 30:43about it there's times that you hate me
- 30:45there's times that I hate you but we
- 30:47need to move on from that and and let's
- 30:48try and not use the radio I think
- 30:50obviously Charles in in that sense in in
- 30:52Las Vegas couldn't control himself so so
- 30:55much but uh at the same time I
- 30:58understand it I am able to also move on
- 31:01from that I I'm not going to complain
- 31:03I'm going to look back at the four four
- 31:06years with Charles and I'm going to have
- 31:07a good memory and I'm going to look back
- 31:10and I'm going to say he was a tough
- 31:12competitor sometimes very vocal in the
- 31:14radio but very tough competitor that I
- 31:17enjoyed every single battle with him and
- 31:18I enjoyed being his teammate and I'm
- 31:22incredibly happy to to have shared those
- 31:24four four years with him because I
- 31:27become a better driver thanks to him
- 31:28he's become probably a better driver
- 31:30thanks to me and we're just yeah we had
- 31:33a lot of fun together and we had tough
- 31:36Fierce competition but always clean and
- 31:39always within the limits that a team
- 31:41would like to have last question on
- 31:44Ferrari and it's a bit of a segue into
- 31:46Williams as well is something James
- 31:48Val's team principal of Williams told me
- 31:51is that you have improved every team
- 31:54you've raced for in Formula 1
- 31:58how do you think you've helped improve
- 32:00Ferrari yeah I think that is obviously a
- 32:03very nice comment from James and I
- 32:05appreciate that team principals are able
- 32:08to see
- 32:09also a bit further down just the pure
- 32:13results know and they can also spot
- 32:16Trends and spot these kind of details
- 32:18you know because it's something that I
- 32:21enjoy is something that I put a lot of
- 32:23effort into in my career which is always
- 32:27try and help the team to to become
- 32:29better and to be a better team and
- 32:31become faster not only just serve as a
- 32:35tool for the team to just drive fast the
- 32:37car that they produce I also like
- 32:39developing that car I also like spending
- 32:42extra time with my engineers and with
- 32:44the engineers in general of the team
- 32:46extra time with me the mechanics and
- 32:48that's why when I went to Ferrari I
- 32:51moved to Marino because I set myself as
- 32:53a Target I'm going to help Ferrari the
- 32:57biggest team in the world to try and
- 32:59become world champions again and I with
- 33:01my skill set and with my feedback and
- 33:03with my tools I'm going to try and yeah
- 33:06be the one that helps Ferrari to come
- 33:09back to the top you know and it's
- 33:11something I enjoy I intrinsically get
- 33:13ins involved in all these conversations
- 33:16because I enjoy it and I and I yeah try
- 33:19to do the best I can to give the the
- 33:21best possible feedback and the best
- 33:23possible directions are we talking
- 33:25operationally are we talking technically
- 33:27or is it
- 33:28across every every aspect of performance
- 33:31I think it's every aspect I think
- 33:33there's things that a driver can have
- 33:35more effect than others obviously
- 33:37performance with setup work and
- 33:40understanding of the setup and the
- 33:42feeling of testing things to then tell
- 33:46the team this works this doesn't work
- 33:48this we should push more in this
- 33:49direction this is definitely not the
- 33:52right
- 33:52direction uh things like that
- 33:54operationally also a bit less because I
- 33:57am not a team principal I'm not someone
- 33:59that can manage a team I don't have the
- 34:03skill set at least not yet at this age
- 34:05but I can say
- 34:07operationally how doesn't matter if it's
- 34:10uh strategy pit stops or whatever I
- 34:14can give some advice or give an opinion
- 34:17of of of how I think or how I feel we're
- 34:20doing things no and that's where I
- 34:23obviously don't get too much into it
- 34:25because I don't want to be too much in
- 34:28in a way and I obviously I'm not a
- 34:29manager as I said I'm just a racing
- 34:31driver but that's also something that I
- 34:34enjoy and that's something that I will
- 34:35will always give feedback about keeping
- 34:38things calm on the pit wall do you feel
- 34:39you've had an influence on that I don't
- 34:41know I think Ferrari honestly in that
- 34:43sense and also Fred have done a very
- 34:46good job at improving that side of
- 34:48things and I think this year proves also
- 34:51how much that department strategy group
- 34:54and and race management has improved um
- 34:58don't get me wrong a better race day car
- 35:00also helps but uh I think in that sense
- 35:04Ferrari has done massive step forwards
- 35:06recently Vegas was not our best example
- 35:09about it for sure but everyone can have
- 35:11a an off day and or we all had an off
- 35:14day in Vegas but uh if you get the
- 35:16average of the 2024 season the progress
- 35:19that Ferrari has shown in that sense is
- 35:21huge and and I think it's just down to
- 35:25everyone involved in in this team about
- 35:27it right let's throw it forward now is
- 35:30everything after Ferrari going to feel a
- 35:32bit of a step down no 100% no I still be
- 35:36a formul one
- 35:39driver enjoying my life uh there will be
- 35:43positives there will be other negatives
- 35:46but you need to remember that what I
- 35:48enjoy is putting on a helmet and driving
- 35:50a formul one car doesn't matter the
- 35:52color I just enjoy driving I enjoy the
- 35:55competition I enjoy challenging myself
- 35:59and especially more than anything I
- 36:00enjoy living a weekend
- 36:04thinking there is nothing else I could
- 36:07have done to make that car faster than
- 36:09what I did and to drive as fast as I did
- 36:12because I think I've manag to execute
- 36:14the maximum out of the package and
- 36:16that's what I will be trying to do
- 36:18weekend in weekend out next year and you
- 36:20can get that same sense of satisfaction
- 36:23battling for p i mean Alex albor didn't
- 36:25get out of q1 in Vegas you think you can
- 36:27get that same sense of satisfaction back
- 36:31there that you do at the front I think
- 36:34inside of yourself yes then for sure
- 36:37I'll miss the podiums I'll miss the
- 36:39celebrations I I'll
- 36:42miss being on a headline because I've
- 36:44won or because I've been on a poll or
- 36:46because
- 36:47whatever but my target is to get back to
- 36:50there I'm not going to
- 36:53Williams just to extract the maximum out
- 36:55of the car I'm going to Williams to try
- 36:57and bring Williams back to the
- 36:59possibility of fighting for those
- 37:00podiums and and and and for the
- 37:04possibility of fighting for those things
- 37:05that also fill me know and fulfill me
- 37:09and
- 37:10and if as I said I am a driver that I
- 37:15think is going to enjoy that process
- 37:16because I enjoy the um trying to help
- 37:21trying to get involved in in just making
- 37:24a uh everything work better no so I'm
- 37:27just looking forward to it more a lot
- 37:29more than what people back at home might
- 37:31be thinking like I am so happy and so
- 37:35motivated about that possibility and
- 37:37about that possibility happen that I
- 37:39don't think people can imagine how
- 37:41actually excited I am about it tell tell
- 37:43us about the decision making process
- 37:46because throughout the summer you were
- 37:47the most wanted man who was available on
- 37:50the
- 37:51grid Alpine wanted
- 37:54you lots of people actually wanted you
- 37:56why Williams I
- 37:59remember having a very tough time let's
- 38:03say during those months because I had to
- 38:06decide about my future and it was not
- 38:08easy I had as you said plenty of options
- 38:12plenty of
- 38:13possibilities trying to find out who was
- 38:16going to be the fastest team in 25 and
- 38:1926 and who was going to deliver more
- 38:22downforce deliver more power for the 26
- 38:25generation of cars and I was trying to
- 38:27do all my questions about to every team
- 38:30and to every technical director team
- 38:33principal asking those questions and
- 38:35then suddenly just before the summer
- 38:37break I realized this this is not going
- 38:40to be what makes or breaks my my
- 38:43decision making I think what's going to
- 38:46make or break my decision making is is
- 38:48the people is the people in the team and
- 38:51I remember
- 38:52thinking JV James bows and his team have
- 38:55shown me an incredible level of
- 38:58commitment towards me and they've showed
- 39:02me a project and a a vision a future a
- 39:06vision of the future that has convinced
- 39:09me and I'm going to trust the people I'm
- 39:11going to trust the people that I'm
- 39:13joining rather than the downforce the
- 39:17the things that I've said before no and
- 39:19I'm going to feel I'm going to follow
- 39:21that instinct and my instinct at the
- 39:23time Told Me JB and his team have
- 39:25produced a project that I was really
- 39:28excited about and I was just going to
- 39:29trust that instinct because I remember
- 39:33leaving McLaren in 2020 feeling these
- 39:36people Andrea Stella sack Brown and
- 39:38Company these people are world champion
- 39:41material like I felt McLaren was one day
- 39:44going to be world champion back again
- 39:46with those key members and I then
- 39:50suddenly I realized 2024 McLaren is the
- 39:53fastest team on the grid for for a few
- 39:56races so my instinct was right when I
- 39:58left McLaren so I said I'm just going to
- 40:01follow my instinct and say JV and and
- 40:03his team did you get the heads up about
- 40:06Hamilton leaving Ferrari because James
- 40:10has told us on this podcast that your
- 40:12first meeting with him was Abu Dhabi
- 40:15last year that was before Lewis had
- 40:16pulled the trigger and announced that he
- 40:18was leaving U was going to Ferrari sorry
- 40:21I'm going to be extremely honest with
- 40:22you when I talked to JB in Abu Dhabi
- 40:25when my management team says James
- 40:28thanks for your interest but 90% that
- 40:31we're going to renew our contract with
- 40:33Ferrari but we will let you know what
- 40:35happens in during these next months that
- 40:37was my answer and thanks for your
- 40:40interest great but at the moment it
- 40:42looks like we're just going to at least
- 40:45that's what we're receiving feedback
- 40:46from Ferrari that it's almost a d deal
- 40:50that's how shocking it was then what
- 40:52what happened how long do you give
- 40:54Williams Because James vals has also
- 40:56said that the facility in Grove are 20
- 40:59years behind those at Mercedes yeah
- 41:02that's not a quick fix and almost I I
- 41:05wouldn't say I don't care but I've seen
- 41:08what they've shown me and I'm 100%
- 41:11convinced James and hip team are doing
- 41:15every necessary
- 41:17work to put together a a plan and a and
- 41:21an infrastructure that is capable of of
- 41:24being at the topag again in Formula One
- 41:26so yeah I know that right now that place
- 41:29is not up to the standards like it's
- 41:32Maranello but they have everything in
- 41:34plan to get it to to work how long do I
- 41:37keep them I don't know how long do they
- 41:40give me to to help them I don't know
- 41:42it's it's a relative question again I
- 41:44I'm only worried about the more
- 41:46immediate future and how much progress
- 41:49we're going to make during 25 and during
- 41:5226 this is what I what I care mostly
- 41:55about and to see the trend and the
- 41:56tendency because that's the the momentum
- 41:59that we need to to start building from
- 42:01next year onwards I get the potential at
- 42:03Williams but do you think you committed
- 42:06too soon in that with czecher Perez's
- 42:10troubles at Red Bull there might be an
- 42:12option there now if you were still
- 42:13available was there ever an option for a
- 42:16one a one-year deal at
- 42:18Mercedes I think if if anything a lot of
- 42:22people in the P will think I took too
- 42:24long especially a lot of my fellow
- 42:26drivers thought I was taking too long to
- 42:28decide no uh no I don't think I fit
- 42:33into the Red Bull situation they had me
- 42:36available for six months and they didn't
- 42:39pick me I think but at that time czecho
- 42:43was still doing a decent job he was
- 42:45finishing on the podium in the early
- 42:46races of the year no it was a lot later
- 42:49it was until the summer break and as I
- 42:52said
- 42:53Ferrari sorry Red Bull had me available
- 42:55for six months and they the pick me and
- 42:57I think it's because I simply don't fit
- 42:59into the type of driver that they need
- 43:01right now in Red Bull and I'm completely
- 43:03fine with that like that's if anything
- 43:07they're making me a favor so um I don't
- 43:12I don't see myself as a what did you say
- 43:15like a a lost opportunity to not wait to
- 43:18December that's not how the Formula 1
- 43:21market works if I would have done that I
- 43:24might have even been uh without a
- 43:27contract a formula one contract for for
- 43:2925 if I keep
- 43:31Alin Williams Ori waiting until this
- 43:34late and I also have obviously an ego
- 43:38and I'm going to go with the people that
- 43:40they really want me and James I canot
- 43:43explain to you how much I felt wanted
- 43:45and how much I felt pushed to to to join
- 43:48them and they did an incredible job also
- 43:50in convincing me because yeah it is a a
- 43:53project that as I said before I just
- 43:55look forward to it James has actually
- 43:58described um trying to sign you as a
- 44:01courtship he said we would be going out
- 44:03to dinner
- 44:05and who was going to make the first move
- 44:08yeah maybe he went a bit too far with
- 44:09that with that comment but um no he just
- 44:12did a good job in that
- 44:14sense also the the Investment Group lton
- 44:17that I and the people that I've met from
- 44:19the group gave me an a a great level of
- 44:23of of trust you know and as I said if
- 44:27the other few other top teams that were
- 44:30available at the time um I would have
- 44:33fit the project that they were thinking
- 44:34they would have they had six months to
- 44:37decide and they didn't so caros do you
- 44:39like the fact that Williams are a bunch
- 44:41of races with a capital R even James
- 44:44does a bit of racing himself James
- 44:46Matthews who's one of the board members
- 44:48there did a lot of racing in in the UK
- 44:50before he went on to do other things
- 44:52does that appeal to you that it's a it's
- 44:54a proper racing team
- 44:57100% this is also this was also part of
- 45:01all the mix of things that helped me
- 45:03took that
- 45:04decision let's see the last time that I
- 45:06was in a team of pure racist that was I
- 45:10think not disrespect over to Ferrari is
- 45:13also a team of races but McLaren had a
- 45:14bit that similar Vibe if you want to oh
- 45:17with Z with Zag and and and Andrea
- 45:19Stella S at the time and had that
- 45:23similar kind of vibe and I think I
- 45:25thrive no in that kind of environment in
- 45:27McLaren so I saw myself going to
- 45:30Williams thinking it's an environment
- 45:31where I think I can show the ver version
- 45:34of myself that this my my target for the
- 45:36future and what about Alex Alburn he's
- 45:39obviously given you good doctor's advice
- 45:41earlier in the year but do you rate him
- 45:43as a racing
- 45:44driver I don't only rate him as a racing
- 45:47driver as a really good racing driver
- 45:49but also as a great human I think if you
- 45:52ask the other 19 drivers in the grid who
- 45:55do you think is one of the Gen
- 45:57good guys in the grid I think they would
- 45:59all say Alex
- 46:02and I've never been teammates with Alex
- 46:05I've never seen his data but I've
- 46:06obviously asked Lando Charles or George
- 46:09that are um have race with Alex and they
- 46:12all say people don't know how fast Alex
- 46:15is like everyone is like telling me he's
- 46:18genuinely a really really good driver
- 46:21like super talented and super fast
- 46:23they've all raced against him me I think
- 46:25only one year of C
- 46:27but I don't remember much and um yeah I
- 46:30think I'm it's a good cocktail of things
- 46:33not just a good human being and a and a
- 46:36great racing driver that I'm looking
- 46:37forward to work with and just work
- 46:40together I think Williams what Williams
- 46:43needs right now is two guys like Alex
- 46:45and me pushing flat out to to make that
- 46:48process make that Journey as short as
- 46:50possible to bring Williams back to where
- 46:52they deserve to be James thinks he's got
- 46:55the best driver line up on the grid next
- 46:56year
- 46:57I think it's a great statement by James
- 47:01I wouldn't obviously disrespect Charles
- 47:03and Lewis as a as teammates
- 47:06um but yeah apart from from from them I
- 47:09think Williams has a obviously a bias
- 47:13but a very strong lineup well Carlos
- 47:16it's been wonderful to chat I did just
- 47:18want to end this going back to Ferrari
- 47:21because we've got a guest who's going to
- 47:24join us now um I wonder if if Ricardo
- 47:28could come in oh my God Ricardo adami
- 47:32Tricky Ricky Ricardo Dam Ricardo how are
- 47:35you if could could you just come and sit
- 47:37next to that would be fantastic this is
- 47:39a
- 47:40surprise he just sent me his report of
- 47:44pre Qatar report and uh I was just
- 47:48looking at it and now here he is so we
- 47:51have special guests joining us now
- 47:54Ricardo adami race engineer done all the
- 47:56races with you caros hasn't he how how
- 47:59would you describe your relationship
- 48:02with each other yeah I'll I'll start
- 48:04with that uh Ricky is um is exactly the
- 48:10the guy that I needed when I arrived to
- 48:12Ferrari a guy that um knew the team
- 48:15inside out he had been many years in
- 48:17Ferrari at the time and I remember going
- 48:20into such a big
- 48:22organization such a big world without
- 48:25knowing anything about the insights of
- 48:27the team and Ricky did a very good job
- 48:29at introducing me to the key people
- 48:32introducing me to all the Marinello um
- 48:36Fabric and all the mechanics he has a
- 48:38great relationship with and and
- 48:40obviously he helped me also with he knew
- 48:42very well the car he knew very well
- 48:45Sebastian er um the setups of the car
- 48:49the the the driving styles of Sebastian
- 48:51against Charles and we just started
- 48:53forming a very strong relationship that
- 48:55helped me adapt to Ferrari I think the
- 48:58quickest that I could have adapted well
- 49:01how quickly did it happen that that
- 49:03jelling process yeah was uh was uh since
- 49:06day one I think was uh we were on the
- 49:09same uh wavelength uh so thinking the
- 49:13same way having similar experience in a
- 49:15way because from Toro Roso days I knew
- 49:17many Engineers that work with him so I
- 49:19had some advises how he was and how to
- 49:22tackle our project together and yeah it
- 49:26was a as I say since the beginning very
- 49:28good relationship we were on the on the
- 49:30same page on developing the car and uh
- 49:34working together he has a very strong
- 49:37attitude to uh workload so very high
- 49:40workload together on the simulator and
- 49:42developing the car and understanding
- 49:44each other since uh the beginning and
- 49:47yeah the results are there to to see
- 49:49after four years we are fighting for the
- 49:51championship together so developing the
- 49:53car as work quite nicely
- 49:56what what's his greatest strength yeah
- 49:59as I said the the is a very hard worker
- 50:04uh level of details uh that we we
- 50:07looking together and developed in the
- 50:09car and the setup I would say that's is
- 50:11a is strength and uh what I've noticed
- 50:15is uh and the cause and uh and action so
- 50:19he's able to to understand technical
- 50:21stuff and then applying driving that is
- 50:24not easy you know it's easy to say but
- 50:26then to do it is another thing what do
- 50:28you think has been his greatest
- 50:30performance for Ferrari so far Mexico
- 50:33outstanding yeah Mexico more than
- 50:35Singapore more than Singapore Singapore
- 50:37was more of a fox driving no SM
- 50:41smart understanding and and playing but
- 50:44uh yeah as I said was uh Mexico was fair
- 50:48and square and uh dominating as I told
- 50:51him after the the race the weekend since
- 50:54fp1 basically are you going to miss the
- 50:56this guy yeah for sure yeah yeah for
- 50:59sure I will I will we will miss him as a
- 51:02group but yeah will you miss Ricky 100%
- 51:08I think we' built a lot of good memories
- 51:11obviously my as I said before my first
- 51:13wins have not only come with Ferrari but
- 51:15have come with Ricky with gum with my
- 51:18mechanics with Corte uh and um the other
- 51:23Engineers of of my group let's say and
- 51:25it is something that I'm people that
- 51:27obviously I'm going to keep for the rest
- 51:30of my life really good memories no and
- 51:32um I would be very happy and very open
- 51:35to to work with them in the future
- 51:37because they've been a great part of of
- 51:39of of the success that we've had
- 51:41together in Ferrari Ricky you worked
- 51:43with Sebastian well lots of great
- 51:45drivers but Sebastian vettle is is one
- 51:47that Springs to mind do you see
- 51:49similarities between Carlos and
- 51:50Sebastian yes indeed they are quite
- 51:53similar in term of uh yeah simulator
- 51:56working with the simulator developing as
- 51:59I say the car the understanding of of
- 52:02the the car Behavior and the sensitivity
- 52:07to staff so is quite sensitive on
- 52:10changes of the car at times you know we
- 52:13change stuff uh blind as it is able to
- 52:16recognize what what has been changed in
- 52:17the C that is quite impressive that came
- 52:20to my mind very similar to
- 52:22Sebastian we started this podcast
- 52:24talking about Melbourne and the job that
- 52:28well Carlos had to do during the buildup
- 52:30but also during the weekend softening
- 52:32the brake pedal things like that just
- 52:35can I get your memories of that weekend
- 52:36as well yeah it was quite intense
- 52:38because yeah from uh from Wednesday it
- 52:41was for the seat belts that didn't
- 52:43arrive from home we were a bit upset and
- 52:46say w we do it you know and then it was
- 52:48quite shocking the very first lap you
- 52:51did in fp1 I was looking I was looking
- 52:54the the other engineers and I was saying
- 52:57are we really sure we want to do it you
- 52:59know because I had just the OE was
- 53:01warming up already after ex after my
- 53:03first lap ol was already warming I like
- 53:06I'm definitely D I was like 5 Seconds
- 53:08off you know not even pushing because as
- 53:11I said I couldn't be I didn't trust that
- 53:14I could push no but very quickly I got
- 53:17within a decent margin no and I we
- 53:20started working on the brake pedal and
- 53:22things to to make me feel a bit more
- 53:25comfortable Well Ricky thank you very
- 53:27much for joining us it's been uh great
- 53:29to have you I'm going to let you go now
- 53:31uh I've just got to do some quick fire
- 53:33questions with Carlos if that's right
- 53:35but thank you very much for your time
- 53:37and um thank you I don't know I don't
- 53:39know how I don't know how we get driver
- 53:41and race engineer to sort of do a
- 53:43farewell on screen we still they have a
- 53:46few battles to fight we have time for
- 53:48the farewell after AB all right we go
- 53:51for a pizza together yeah great to have
- 53:54Ricky join us one of the things you said
- 53:56say oh I would like to work with him in
- 53:58the future did you ever think about
- 54:00taking him trying to take him with you
- 54:02to Williams of course there's these kind
- 54:04of things come come to your head H but
- 54:07at the same time you also need to be
- 54:08realistic and as much as working
- 54:12relationships are
- 54:14important the personal ones are also
- 54:17fundamental and I know obviously his
- 54:19family is in Italy his kids they leave
- 54:2210 minutes away from arelo and I also
- 54:24realize like there's things that
- 54:27sometimes you wish that could happen but
- 54:29also there's other things that
- 54:30realistically you know they're probably
- 54:32never going to happen so you never even
- 54:35like H try to make them happen because
- 54:37they are a bit too far from from the
- 54:40possible reality and and I think a guy
- 54:43like Ricky honestly is a guy that will
- 54:46always be a a Ferrari guy and he
- 54:49deserves you know to to to be there keep
- 54:52being successful there like he's been
- 54:54and he's also very loved and very
- 54:55respect by by everyone there well Carlos
- 54:59it's been great to catch up after a
- 55:01couple of years if we can just end this
- 55:04in what I call the traditional way are
- 55:06quickfire questions okay what else are
- 55:08you good at um I would say in general
- 55:12just Sports I'm good at all sports all
- 55:16sports I'm at decent level at every
- 55:18sport so golf would be the main one yeah
- 55:22you played the old corset St Andrews in
- 55:23the summer didn't you yeah I was going
- 55:25through a very tough moment in my
- 55:27golfing career and I play my best if I
- 55:30would play that course that day the
- 55:32level that I'm playing now that could
- 55:35have been so much better well course
- 55:37record I think is 61 no no I'm not
- 55:39talking about course records obviously
- 55:41I'm not a pro and anything like that but
- 55:44the other day I shoot my first round on
- 55:46the par one under in a tournament back
- 55:49in Spain and yeah um I'm still a five
- 55:55handicap but it's coming down and Tennis
- 55:58is another sport
- 55:59squash your old man was a good squash
- 56:02player wasn't he my dad was a squash
- 56:04Champion but everything with a rocket I
- 56:07can play fairly well um mon skin
- 56:13wakeboarding uh I don't know football I
- 56:17I can play
- 56:18decent I don't know you name it doesn't
- 56:21matter I I always if you tell me a sport
- 56:23and you say I challenge you you might
- 56:26beat me the first time but maybe in two
- 56:28months I come back and I'm so upset
- 56:31about having lost that I will get to a
- 56:33good level right I'm thinking paddle now
- 56:36are you part of the paddle gang in The
- 56:38Paddock I'm not part of the gang I don't
- 56:40play with the gang because they're still
- 56:42not at the level
- 56:44but I can play
- 56:47P right you've laid down a marker now um
- 56:51look next one which racing person Dead
- 56:54or Alive would you want to be stuck in a
- 56:57lift with okay Senna I think just share
- 57:01a good conversation with Senna I would
- 57:03love to what would you ask him so many
- 57:05things I honestly I don't know where I
- 57:07would start I would just know I would be
- 57:10very annoying asking a lot of questions
- 57:13who would play you in a film who looks
- 57:15like
- 57:16me well it doesn't really matter no you
- 57:20I like as an as actors I really like
- 57:22Will
- 57:23Smith um why he I don't know I've always
- 57:28liked him like like his movies and his
- 57:30acting I always found it a mix between
- 57:33funny but also
- 57:35cool I like if it has to be an action
- 57:38movie maybe Tom Cruz could be cool um
- 57:42who is the coolest person in your
- 57:45contacts I don't know I'm lucky to have
- 57:48in my contacts people like Nadal
- 57:52raadal the best ever had something you
- 57:55know for me is cool and for me Rafa is
- 57:57the best or one of the best ever at
- 58:00tennis t poacha is going to be the best
- 58:03ever in cycling
- 58:05and probably there's also people from
- 58:08some other sport that are the best and
- 58:11do they inspire you when you're doing
- 58:13those Sports I mean I know you've been
- 58:15out cycling with not when I am doing
- 58:18them because I'm so far from them that
- 58:20it is not I don't think about their
- 58:23level when I play that sport what I
- 58:24think is what they might manag to
- 58:26achieve in sport in general and the
- 58:28mentality they have the I know how tough
- 58:31it is to win but the way that these
- 58:34people manage to dominate and win so
- 58:36much in their sport is truly impressive
- 58:39and especially the I like people with
- 58:43the way they go about winning it's for
- 58:45me it's not only about winning it's the
- 58:47way they go about the way they go about
- 58:49it and being an example to the younger
- 58:52generation and for me this two that I
- 58:54just mentioned is the perfect example
- 58:57for the younger generation of how to
- 59:00approach competition how to approach
- 59:03life as an
- 59:04athlete and yeah they're just a truly
- 59:07great example final one if you hosted a
- 59:11podcast like this who would be your
- 59:13first guest I think these two could be a
- 59:16good start and then I would try and get
- 59:19Tiger Woods in the podcast I would try
- 59:21and get um
- 59:26ilura the UFC fighter Spanish I become a
- 59:31big fan of him
- 59:32recently
- 59:33[Music]
- 59:34um I don't know just the greatest if I
- 59:37could just get the contact of the
- 59:39greatest at at things you know and I'd
- 59:42listen to all challenging them with
- 59:44tricky questions like you do you know is
- 59:46there is there a formula one person you
- 59:49bring on yeah for sure for sure I I I
- 59:53would like to
- 59:54bring fellow r racing drivers and try
- 59:58and open them up and have the kind of
- 1:00:02conversation that I can have with
- 1:00:03Charles Orlando about racing and see let
- 1:00:08the people at home see the kind of stuff
- 1:00:10that we can talk about and discuss I
- 1:00:13think this would be very cool you
- 1:00:15achieved that with Char and Lando yeah
- 1:00:17but who would you like not with a
- 1:00:19microphone in front of us yeah yeah yeah
- 1:00:20but but is there another driver that you
- 1:00:23would be intrigued to unpick I think
- 1:00:26those two are the ones that I could get
- 1:00:28the most out of because I know them very
- 1:00:30well and I would say remember this time
- 1:00:32what did you think when I did this or
- 1:00:34when did he think that and I could get
- 1:00:37the most out of for a podcast from these
- 1:00:40two because I know them well and I have
- 1:00:41more experience with them with the
- 1:00:44others yeah with my teammates I ex
- 1:00:47teammates I would manage to get
- 1:00:50more Saucy
- 1:00:52stuff I think we'll leave it there
- 1:00:54Carlos what a great check thank you very
- 1:00:56much for your time it's Che thank you
- 1:00:58very much
