Canon M50, and Canon M50 Mark II, Best Settings for YouTube Videos — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00one of the most intimidating things
- 0:02about using your canon m50 for your
- 0:04youtube videos is getting the settings
- 0:06right in the camera and i think a lot of
- 0:08people just become overwhelmed with the
- 0:10idea of tweaking and changing settings
- 0:12in the camera manually and they just
- 0:14leave the whole thing on automatic and
- 0:16in the end you don't get nearly the
- 0:17quality result that you could if you
- 0:19actually took a little bit of time and
- 0:21tuned the camera in and set it up so it
- 0:23produced an image was really just to
- 0:26your liking and suits the style of
- 0:28youtube video that you're producing and
- 0:30arguably the most important thing to the
- 0:32way your video looks is the lighting and
- 0:34this video is part of a playlist where i
- 0:36go through all my tips and tricks in
- 0:38using this camera for your youtube
- 0:40videos and certainly lighting is the
- 0:42most important one so make sure you
- 0:44check out that video because the
- 0:46settings really won't do you too much
- 0:47good if you have not tuned your lighting
- 0:49in first
- 0:50[Music]
- 0:54and probably the easiest part of the
- 0:56settings and maybe even the most fun
- 0:58part of the settings is the picture
- 1:00styles and the picture styles are
- 1:02essentially like a film simulation or a
- 1:05color simulation they're just a set of
- 1:07settings in the camera that just allows
- 1:10you to choose what sort of style of
- 1:12coloration you want it gives you control
- 1:14over the color tones it gives you
- 1:16control over the saturation the contrast
- 1:18the sharpness and there's a few
- 1:20different built-in ones and there's
- 1:21really four that i recommend using for
- 1:24youtube videos and those are the
- 1:25standard picture profile the neutral
- 1:27picture profile the portrait picture
- 1:29profile and the faithful picture profile
- 1:37and what you're seeing right now is just
- 1:38my standard settings that i use for all
- 1:40of my youtube videos and this is the
- 1:43neutral picture profile and i've just
- 1:45taken that and i've just turned down the
- 1:47contrast about one notch in the in the
- 1:49menu below and i've turned the sharpness
- 1:52up two notches
- 1:55[Music]
- 1:58now we're in the standard picture
- 1:59profile and i think this one looks
- 2:00really good and i have used this before
- 2:03for me if i'm gonna use this i want to
- 2:05turn down the the contrast just a little
- 2:08bit and i also turned down the sharpness
- 2:10just a little bit just to soften up the
- 2:12look on my skin and you'll often find
- 2:14that a lot of people
- 2:16think that the image coming out of this
- 2:17camera is actually too sharp and isn't
- 2:19very flattering on their skin and just
- 2:21by turning down that contrast and
- 2:23turning down that sharpness it just
- 2:25softens things up and it looks a little
- 2:27bit more natural and just a little bit
- 2:28more flattering on the skin
- 2:35now we're in the portrait picture
- 2:36profile and this one is just generally
- 2:38designed for taking portraits of people
- 2:40so as a rule it tends to be a bit more
- 2:42flattering on the skin it's got a little
- 2:44bit lower contrast a little bit more
- 2:46muted tones but once again really the
- 2:48only way to work out which of these
- 2:50picture profiles works for you is just
- 2:52to play with them in your own
- 2:54environment in your own lighting so i've
- 2:56sort of gone through and tried these
- 2:58different picture profiles for myself
- 3:00and i did eventually settle on the
- 3:01neutral picture profile
- 3:05[Music]
- 3:07now we're in the faithful picture
- 3:09profile and this one has like these
- 3:10really muted tones it's a bit more of a
- 3:12filmic look and i've often used this for
- 3:15sort of family travel when i just sort
- 3:17of want a low contrast sort of almost
- 3:19hollywood feel to it if you want it to
- 3:21even look more filmic and more cinematic
- 3:24once you go into the faithful picture
- 3:26profile you have the ability to decrease
- 3:28your contrast and saturation and
- 3:30sharpness so now i've just gone down and
- 3:32i've turned down the contrast i've
- 3:33turned down the sharpness i've turned
- 3:35down the saturation and what you can see
- 3:36is it's starting to look very filmic the
- 3:39tones are much more muted and you're
- 3:41getting a very a much more cinematic
- 3:43feel and and particularly if you're sort
- 3:45of outdoors this can be a really good
- 3:47one because it sort of evens out those
- 3:49harsh shadows and and bright spots and
- 3:52it is kind of a nice one i think
- 3:54particularly for outdoors but in this
- 3:56type of environment i want a little bit
- 3:57more color and a little bit more punch
- 3:59to the image that i'm putting up on
- 4:01youtube and the way we access our
- 4:02picture profiles is we just are in our
- 4:05normal mode here we are we hit q up in
- 4:07that top corner and then along the
- 4:09bottom here is where we've got our
- 4:10different picture profiles and if i page
- 4:12over
- 4:13this is the standard that's one of the
- 4:14ones i recommend checking out this is
- 4:16the portrait
- 4:18over here is the neutral and then just
- 4:20on the next page here the faithful those
- 4:22are the four that i recommend and if you
- 4:24go into each one we can click into the
- 4:26standard then we click info and up here
- 4:28we have our
- 4:31sharpness and that takes our sharpness
- 4:33up and down if you're finding that it's
- 4:34a bit too sharp on your skin and you're
- 4:36seeing sort of every pore in your face
- 4:38and you're not into that just turn that
- 4:39down a bit
- 4:41the next one is our contrast once again
- 4:43this is another one that's worth
- 4:45tweaking down if you just want to soften
- 4:46up the image a bit if you think there's
- 4:48just too much contrast or a little bit
- 4:50much too much detail in your face and
- 4:53then here's the saturation sometimes
- 4:55with youtube videos people like a little
- 4:56bit more saturation a little bit more
- 4:58color punch so you just pop that up and
- 5:00down you can even see that what it's
- 5:02doing there
- 5:04don't actually trust exactly what you're
- 5:06seeing in the in the screen on the m50
- 5:08you really have to take the shots bring
- 5:10them into your computer and see so you
- 5:12can see how crazy colorful that is way
- 5:15over the top and the skin tones but you
- 5:17might want to just either pop it down
- 5:19one or two like that and once again just
- 5:22shoot some shots have a look in the
- 5:24camera come back shoot again and just
- 5:27keep playing with it in your environment
- 5:28with in your lighting to figure out
- 5:31which one you think looks best for the
- 5:32sort of setup you're doing or the style
- 5:34you're going for so i'm just editing
- 5:35this video and i've realized i've left
- 5:37the sharpening up too high in the
- 5:38footage for the rest of this video so
- 5:40what you see in the talking head part
- 5:41that is not the way my video normally
- 5:43looks and it's not the way your video
- 5:45should look either but it is how the
- 5:46video would look just coming in the
- 5:48standard picture profile with the
- 5:49standard sharpening and over sharpening
- 5:52is one of the problems with the canon
- 5:53m50 so you do need to make sure you turn
- 5:55down that sharpening but even though
- 5:57that image isn't perfect all the
- 5:58information you get from here on in is
- 6:00spot on and i hope that this will help
- 6:02you get better footage out of your canon
- 6:04m50
- 6:09and even before we go into the picture
- 6:11styles and we start experimenting with
- 6:12them we really need to get our white
- 6:14balance right and and i do that manually
- 6:16and i use the kelvin value to set the
- 6:19white balance and just to show you
- 6:22how much changing the white balance or
- 6:23getting the white balance wrong can
- 6:25affect the way your image looks i'm just
- 6:28going to jump in and i'm going to change
- 6:29it now and i think you're going to be
- 6:31astonished by how much it skews the
- 6:33image and the colors in our image now
- 6:35the correct white balance for this scene
- 6:37is about 4 200 kelvin which is a setting
- 6:40in the menu system i'm going to show you
- 6:41here in a second but i've just gone in
- 6:43and i manually set it to 2500 kelvin so
- 6:45now you can see it looks like i'm on the
- 6:47surface of the moon or something and
- 6:48what's happening here is every light
- 6:51whether it be sunlight or shade or
- 6:53reflected light or artificial light like
- 6:55the bulb i'm using here has a kelvin
- 6:57color temperature and the camera unlike
- 7:00our eyes which automatically compensates
- 7:03for what the colors are in the
- 7:04environment and then our brain just sort
- 7:06of calculates it out to look a certain
- 7:08way the camera can't do that it just
- 7:10picks it up the way that it comes into
- 7:11the camera so you have to tell
- 7:14the camera what color the light is so
- 7:18that your image looks natural and now
- 7:20we're at 10 000 kelvin the other end of
- 7:22the scale so you can see on the one end
- 7:24of the scale we are cold and blue and on
- 7:27the other end of the scale we're sort of
- 7:29red and crazy sunburned looking and the
- 7:31way we set our color temperatures is
- 7:32just once again we go up to the q
- 7:34and then we're gonna hit this um the
- 7:36white balance will be here we're using
- 7:38the kelvin value so it says k but right
- 7:40now on yours it'll probably say awb
- 7:43because yours is probably set up to auto
- 7:44white balance at the moment so we're
- 7:46going to click on the awb and then
- 7:48that's going to bring our white balance
- 7:49up along the bottom here we're going to
- 7:51page over to the kelvin value and then
- 7:54we're going to hit the set color
- 7:56temperature this is going to allow
- 7:58us to change this number up and down now
- 8:01how do we know what number we want this
- 8:03to be what we do is we go look on the
- 8:06light bulb or the light source that is
- 8:08giving us the primarily primary light
- 8:11and it should have a kelvin value on it
- 8:14now if you're in direct sunlight the
- 8:16kelvin value i think is about 5500 if
- 8:19you're in shade it's going to be more
- 8:21like 4600 so you can sort of play with
- 8:24this and just look at the the color tone
- 8:26on your skin to work out what looks best
- 8:28or what you're happiest with but in this
- 8:31case i've got a 4000 kelvin bulb and
- 8:33i've been happy with this when i've set
- 8:35the color temperature in the camera to
- 8:374200
- 8:38but the best way to do this is just to
- 8:40do it in your own environment with your
- 8:42own lighting
- 8:43with the setup that you're going to use
- 8:44normally and then take a few shots maybe
- 8:47at a few different kelvin values and
- 8:48then put them in your computer and look
- 8:50at them and work out what you think work
- 8:53looks or works best for you and in my
- 8:55case um i've actually gone even though
- 8:58the bulb is a 4000 kelvin i've ended up
- 9:00doing a 4200 kelvin because i just
- 9:02thought that looked a little bit better
- 9:04and just warmed my skin up a little bit
- 9:08[Music]
- 9:11now the next thing we need to talk about
- 9:12is our shutter speed our iso and our
- 9:15aperture value we're going to set all
- 9:16this manually and what we're going to do
- 9:19is
- 9:20actually i'm going to have to stop this
- 9:22so i can show you up here
- 9:24you'll see we get a choice between
- 9:26manual or automatic
- 9:28that is in the menu system up here in
- 9:30the top left corner so if that doesn't
- 9:32have an m in front of it
- 9:34if it looks like this
- 9:37if it looks like that then we're in
- 9:38automatic mode we want to click on that
- 9:40we want to select the m we want to hit
- 9:42ok
- 9:43and now we're in the manual mode that's
- 9:45going to allow us to set our
- 9:48shutter speed our aperture
- 9:50and our iso manually now
- 9:53what we need to do to start with is you
- 9:55want to take the aperture you want to
- 9:56make it the lowest number you've got on
- 9:58this lens that i'm using right now
- 9:59that's f 1.8 if you're using the sigma
- 10:0216 millimeter that's going to be f 1.4
- 10:05and if it's the kit lens that's going to
- 10:07be f 3.5
- 10:09then we are going to set our shutter
- 10:11speed to 1 over 50 and to start with
- 10:14we're going to set our iso to 100.
- 10:17now if you're in a situation like me
- 10:19where if you send it to these settings
- 10:21and you can see that the scene is too
- 10:22dark what we're going to do is we're
- 10:24going to take that iso value and we're
- 10:26going to continue increase it until it
- 10:28looks about right
- 10:29then to make sure if it's right or not
- 10:31we're going to half press the shutter
- 10:33button and see if that little dot lines
- 10:35up in the middle there at the bottom
- 10:37this is our exposure meter this tells us
- 10:39if it the if the camera thinks that our
- 10:41image is exposed properly so it's
- 10:43hovering there about the middle so it
- 10:45thinks that we're exposed properly i'm
- 10:46not actually sitting in the proper
- 10:48position right now because i'm leaning
- 10:49in to adjust the settings so that makes
- 10:51it a bit hard but all we want is to make
- 10:53sure that that is lined up so we've got
- 10:55this at one over 50 we got here at f 1.8
- 10:58on this camera or this lens in yours
- 11:01just set it to whatever the lowest
- 11:02number you can get the lowest number
- 11:04allows you to get the most light into
- 11:06the camera which means that the opening
- 11:09that allows light into the camera is at
- 11:10its largest size it's kind of confusing
- 11:13the smaller number the bigger the
- 11:14opening but that's just how it works so
- 11:17set that number to the smallest possible
- 11:19and then slide your iso up until you've
- 11:21got everything properly exposed and that
- 11:23little line is in the middle
- 11:25now the canon m50 doesn't do really that
- 11:29great with high iso so if this iso
- 11:32number here in the corner is getting up
- 11:34over
- 11:35a thousand then it means we don't have
- 11:38enough light and we're gonna need to
- 11:39bring more light into our scene to get a
- 11:41good quality image because the further
- 11:43that goes over about a thousand the more
- 11:45grainy and gritty our footage is and the
- 11:47poorer quality footage we actually get
- 11:50so we want to make sure we keep that
- 11:52under a thousand now what happens if we
- 11:54set everything up and it's too bright if
- 11:57it's too bright when you're at iso 100
- 11:59and i'm just going to simulate this by
- 12:01just putting this up to 1600 simulate it
- 12:03being too bright
- 12:04say that you've got this down to 100 and
- 12:06it's too bright still then what we're
- 12:08going to do is we're going to use the
- 12:09shutter speed to bring this
- 12:11into
- 12:13properly
- 12:15exposed so we're just going to half
- 12:16press the button again there now we're
- 12:18properly
- 12:19exposed so imagine this is uh the iso is
- 12:22at 100 not a 1600 or what i've just set
- 12:25it to
- 12:25and if it's too light we're going to use
- 12:28that shutter speed we're going to
- 12:30increase that until we're properly
- 12:32exposed
- 12:32[Music]
- 12:37and the last thing we're going to talk
- 12:38about is shutter speed and
- 12:40if you just want the simple answer i
- 12:42want you to go into your camera into
- 12:44region and set it to pal mode and then i
- 12:46want you to shoot in 25 frames per
- 12:49second in full hd and what we want to do
- 12:52is for our shutter speed to start with
- 12:54we're going to have to go into the menu
- 12:55system find the wrench icon and go over
- 12:57to the number three then we're going to
- 12:59click the video system
- 13:02and then we're going to select pal mode
- 13:04and then what we're gonna do is we're
- 13:06gonna just back out of that
- 13:09we're once again gonna hit the q button
- 13:11we're gonna go over here full hd and
- 13:14we're gonna choose 25 frames per second
- 13:16now what you can hear from a lot of
- 13:18people and a lot of big youtubers is
- 13:19shooting 24 frames per second because
- 13:21that is the most cinematic thing
- 13:23and just to cover this off yes 24 frames
- 13:26per second is seen as cinematic it is
- 13:28seen as cinematic because hollywood
- 13:30movies back when we had the big reels
- 13:33those little pictures only slotted
- 13:34through at 24 frames per second so we've
- 13:36gotten used to watching movies that are
- 13:3924 frames per second so even in the
- 13:41digital age where none of this matters
- 13:42and we choose any frame rate we want
- 13:44people generally choose 24 frames per
- 13:46second because it looks more cinematic
- 13:48and you'll hear that from all kinds of
- 13:50big youtubers but what i've found is a
- 13:52lot of the youtubers and a lot of even
- 13:54the big youtubers don't shoot in 24
- 13:56frames per second anymore they shoot in
- 13:5825 frames per second and the reason for
- 14:01this is to the to the naked human eye
- 14:03and when we're watching video we cannot
- 14:05tell the difference between 24 and 25
- 14:08frames per second it is completely
- 14:10indistinguishable because it is such a
- 14:12small difference
- 14:13but
- 14:14when we're shooting in 24 frames per
- 14:17second and we decide to go shoot
- 14:18something in slow motion our only option
- 14:20in the menu system is to shoot at 60
- 14:22frames per second
- 14:24if you shoot footage in 60 frames per
- 14:26second and you're putting it into a
- 14:28project or movie or youtube video that
- 14:31is a 24 frames per second production
- 14:34and you decide to use that footage you
- 14:36shot and say hey i shot that i meant for
- 14:38it to be slow motion but right now i
- 14:40just realized that this actually works
- 14:42better at regular speed and regular
- 14:44motion if you try and play that 60
- 14:47frames per second in your 24 frames per
- 14:49second video it gets choppy and jumpy
- 14:53it's just the way it works i won't go
- 14:54into too much detail but effectively
- 14:56every six frames or so it dumps a frame
- 14:59and you've probably seen it before
- 15:00whether it be your footage or somebody
- 15:02else's when they get the frame rates
- 15:04mixed up like this is it'll be a panning
- 15:06shot and it'll pan and jump pan and jump
- 15:08pan and jump this sort of defeats our
- 15:10whole purpose of trying to do cinematic
- 15:13video and we know if we are trying to do
- 15:14cinematic video the slow motion is a big
- 15:17part of that so at some point in the
- 15:18project you're going to be shooting at
- 15:20these higher frame rates
- 15:22if you change it into pal mode
- 15:24and use 25 frames per second
- 15:27we have a slow motion option in that
- 15:28menu system which is 50 frames per
- 15:30second and the power of this is we can
- 15:32go out and shoot all day at 50 frames
- 15:35per second and then when we're editing
- 15:38the footage we can decide whether we
- 15:39want to use any of that in slow motion
- 15:41or any of that in regular motion and
- 15:43because
- 15:4450 frames per second divides evenly into
- 15:4725 frames per second
- 15:49all that happens is every other frame
- 15:52gets dropped and we get perfectly smooth
- 15:54regular motion which looks exactly like
- 15:57we intentionally shot it in 25 frames
- 16:00per second but if we choose with any of
- 16:02that footage to make it slow motion we
- 16:04can slow it down to 50 percent and we
- 16:06get perfect slow motion if you're
- 16:08interested in succeeding on youtube with
- 16:10your canon m50 i have made an entire
- 16:13playlist dedicated to doing just that so
- 16:16click on the link that's on screen now
- 16:17and that'll take you straight through to
- 16:19that playlist
