  10. 0:20slash Ben well Benjamin Franklin once
  11. 0:23suggested that death and taxes were the
  12. 0:25only inevitabilities wrong he was
  13. 0:27canceled culture is an inevitability as
  14. 0:29well everyone will be canceled unless
  15. 0:32you're on the full-on woke left in which
  16. 0:33case you can say anything I mean you can
  17. 0:35you can literally quote hit learn if
  18. 0:36you're on the full-on woke left you
  19. 0:37won't be cancelled they'll be tried just
  20. 0:39a little bit because you made everybody
  21. 0:40look bad but you won't be cancelled for
  22. 0:42that we'll get to that story in a little
  23. 0:44while but cancel culture is quite real
  24. 0:45it particularly exists not at the top
  25. 0:47levels although it does exist at the top
  26. 0:49levels I mean if you're the National
  27. 0:51Book Critics Circle and half of your
  28. 0:53board members are forced to resign or
  29. 0:54not being sufficiently woke for not
  30. 0:56being sufficiently suppli Kotori toward
  31. 0:58a black lives matter the vulture calm
  32. 1:01reported a week ago that twelve board
  33. 1:03members of the National Book Critics
  34. 1:04Circle an organization of eight hundred
  35. 1:06critics began to draft a statement in
  36. 1:08support of the black lives matter
  37. 1:09movement noting the publishing industry
  38. 1:11has long been overwhelmingly white from
  39. 1:12top to bottom
  40. 1:13they wrote of their culpability in this
  41. 1:14system of a ratio of black and
  42. 1:16indigenous voices from the cultural
  43. 1:18conversation and listed a bunch of steps
  44. 1:20they wanted to take his mail Mohammed
  45. 1:22black writer and critic said it was
  46. 1:23really exciting we were hoping to change
  47. 1:24ourselves and then model something for
  48. 1:26the entire industry just as the group
  49. 1:28was starting to share the statement of
  50. 1:29the world the organization began to
  51. 1:30fracture and then implode over the past
  52. 1:32several days more than half of the
  53. 1:33National Book Critics Circle 24 board
  54. 1:35members which had included six people of
  55. 1:37color have resigned in a flurry of
  56. 1:38acrimony shion's over racism privacy
  57. 1:40concerns and political correctness
  58. 1:42what exactly happened well the
  59. 1:44organization's president when Laurie
  60. 1:45Herzl who is white ran the statement by
  61. 1:47several board members who hadn't
  62. 1:48participated in writing it one board
  63. 1:50member caralyn Romano said he disagreed
  64. 1:51with some of the claims in the letter
  65. 1:52but didn't want to distract from the
  66. 1:54great majority of the board from its
  67. 1:55mission but he went on to detail his
  68. 1:57objections to a number of those claims
  69. 1:58dismissing the statements fundamental
  70. 2:00premise is absolute nonsense that the
  71. 2:01publishing industry has been attempting
  72. 2:03to silence the voices of people of color
  73. 2:05which is absolute nonsense by the way I
  74. 2:06mean it's just not true I know a lot of
  75. 2:09the heads of these major publishing
  76. 2:11corporations the last thing they're
  77. 2:12attempting to do
  78. 2:13is silence people of color it's insane I
  79. 2:15mean fully insane a white critic and
  80. 2:17former board president he took issue
  81. 2:18with the idea the publishing business
  82. 2:20operated with quote the full benefits of
  83. 2:22white supremacy and institutional racism
  84. 2:23and that white gatekeeping had been
  85. 2:25working to stifle black voices at every
  86. 2:27level of our industry these are
  87. 2:28statements that were made in this little
  88. 2:30letter and then she was chided and then
  89. 2:33other people got angry and then a bunch
  90. 2:35of people were basically forced to
  91. 2:36resign from the National Book Critics
  92. 2:38Circle we've seen data analysts who
  93. 2:41worked for liberal organizations like
  94. 2:43David Shore put out basically anodyne
  95. 2:45data points and then be forced to resign
  96. 2:47from organizations like civics analytics
  97. 2:50Rosina we've seen high-level people
  98. 2:51who've been forced to resign from their
  99. 2:52jobs the Boeing communications chief was
  100. 2:54forced to resign because 33 years ago he
  101. 2:56wrote a piece saying that women
  102. 2:57shouldn't be in direct combat right well
  103. 2:59this stuff does exist and it's existed
  104. 3:01for quite a long time I mean let's not
  105. 3:02pretend that this is a creation of this
  106. 3:04year I'm old enough to remember when
  107. 3:05Brendon ice the co-founder of Mozilla
  108. 3:08Firefox was forced to resign from his
  109. 3:09position for the great sin of having
  110. 3:11supported traditional marriage under
  111. 3:13prop under the proposition in 2008 in
  112. 3:16California that proposed the traditional
  113. 3:19manner to be preserved by the way that
  114. 3:20was at a time when Barack Obama
  115. 3:21supported traditional marriage he was
  116. 3:23forced resign Brendan Eich right so
  117. 3:25cancel culture has been around for a
  118. 3:27very very long time it has just picked
  119. 3:28up a lot of speed and more and more it
  120. 3:30is being applied to the common everyday
  121. 3:31citizen it's not just being applied to
  122. 3:32people at high levels of power and
  123. 3:34prestige it is being applied to everyone
  124. 3:36if you are a person who is working in a
  125. 3:38corporation and you're at a very low
  126. 3:39level and you have a Facebook post from
  127. 3:41three years ago suggesting that hands up
  128. 3:43don't shoot was a lie maybe you'll be
  129. 3:44cancelled if you say all black lives
  130. 3:46matter not just black lives matter you
  131. 3:47could find yourself on the chopping
  132. 3:49block if you point out that Robyn
  133. 3:50D'Angelo is white fragility is a bag of
  134. 3:52hogwash well then you are going to be
  135. 3:54canceled probably so cancel culture
  136. 3:55undoubtedly exists because we are
  137. 3:57watching it every single day and if you
  138. 3:59don't feel like hansel culture exists
  139. 4:01it's because you're are ignorant or
  140. 4:03you're a member of the persecuting party
  141. 4:04there are a lot of people out there
  142. 4:06particularly on the hard left or members
  143. 4:08of the cancel culture who insist that
  144. 4:09they are not actually part of a cancel
  145. 4:11culture they're just holding people
  146. 4:12accountable except they're not holding
  147. 4:14people accountable because the
  148. 4:15accountability is generally chiding
  149. 4:18somebody for their bad behavior it's not
  150. 4:19going to their employer and having them
  151. 4:21fired over something that is absolutely
  152. 4:23not fireable and has nothing to do with
  153. 4:24their employment the difference between
  154. 4:26cancel culture and regular court
  155. 4:27I disagree with what you just said and
  156. 4:30I'm gonna go to your boss and see with
  157. 4:32your boss disagrees I just said cancel
  158. 4:34culture is about trying to ruin
  159. 4:36somebody's life over something they said
  160. 4:38that you disagree with right that's the
  161. 4:39definition of cancel culture it is not
  162. 4:41just we are going to criticize what you
  163. 4:44said we're not gonna point out that
  164. 4:45you're wrong we're not gonna have a
  165. 4:46conversation about that it is we're
  166. 4:47going to go to all of the ways that you
  167. 4:49make your money and make your living and
  168. 4:51earn your bread and we are going to
  169. 4:52attempt to deprive you of those things
  170. 4:54because we disagree with the thing that
  171. 4:55you just said and that is the nature of
  172. 4:57cancel culture the great defenders of
  173. 4:59cancel culture of course claim that it
  174. 5:01doesn't exist so jut let them all writes
  175. 5:03popular information which is this blog
  176. 5:05that is specifically dedicated to going
  177. 5:07after outlets on the right and very
  178. 5:08often just making up information about
  179. 5:09them
  180. 5:10full disclosure he's been coming after
  181. 5:11daily wire recently for the bizarre
  182. 5:13claim that the way that we make our
  183. 5:15money is by marketing via a third party
  184. 5:17Facebook page that was responsible for
  185. 5:19it counted one point zero one percent of
  186. 5:22the grand total traffic in the last
  187. 5:24three months via our analytics in any
  188. 5:26case jeff Legum suggested quote cancel
  189. 5:29culture is something that does not exist
  190. 5:30but is a very popular concept among
  191. 5:32people who do terrible things and don't
  192. 5:34like being held accountable so cancel
  193. 5:37culture doesn't exist and also I am the
  194. 5:39leader of it right that statement said
  195. 5:42cancel culture doesn't exist also I'm
  196. 5:44just going to say that I'm going to ruin
  197. 5:47your life in your career for you
  198. 5:48disagree with me right who do terrible
  199. 5:50things what are the terrible things that
  200. 5:51are being done the terrible things that
  201. 5:52are being done are typically things like
  202. 5:55not being quote unquote anti-racist
  203. 5:58enough in the in bro McKenzie definition
  204. 5:59of anti racism I being too fragile
  205. 6:01crying a white woman crying at a meeting
  206. 6:04but these are things that are terrible
  207. 6:06things and don't like being held
  208. 6:07accountable Chuck led them says the
  209. 6:09problem with the United States is not
  210. 6:10that there is too much accountability
  211. 6:11but there is too little too little
  212. 6:14accountability he says it's amazing the
  213. 6:16self-proclaimed champions of free speech
  214. 6:17scream stop criticizing me you are
  215. 6:19attacking free speech every time they
  216. 6:20say something pernicious and someone
  217. 6:21responds that is the opposite of free
  218. 6:23speech if you believe in free speech
  219. 6:24defend your position
  220. 6:26okay but this is this is what's larious
  221. 6:28he then goes on to use as his example of
  222. 6:30people or falsely or falsely claiming
  223. 6:33canceled culture a case in which
  224. 6:35somebody actually was cancelled right so
  225. 6:37then he says so from from his little
  226. 6:39screed here in which you suggest
  227. 6:41canceled culture doesn't exist his
  228. 6:42suggestion is if I say something and Jeb
  229. 6:44welcome criticizes it and I call that
  230. 6:45canceled culture no that's not canceled
  231. 6:48culture canceled culture is when you
  232. 6:49attempt to take me off the air because
  233. 6:50you disagree with what I say but he's
  234. 6:53fine with that too okay because his
  235. 6:55exact example of something that his
  236. 6:57quote unquote not canceled culture is
  237. 6:58when the New Yorkers David Remnick
  238. 7:00interview was supposed to interview
  239. 7:01Steve Bannon at an event and then
  240. 7:04canceled the actual interview because
  241. 7:06there's so much blowback about Stieb and
  242. 7:08that's an actual cancelling that's an
  243. 7:09actual event that was cancelled okay
  244. 7:11does not just somebody disagreed with
  245. 7:12Steve Bannon it was you had booked an
  246. 7:14event and then you cancelled the events
  247. 7:15thanks to blowback so Chad Legum says
  248. 7:18I'm just I'm taking back free speech
  249. 7:19from this tiresome group of people who
  250. 7:21just complained all the time about being
  251. 7:22silenced but actually get paid lots of
  252. 7:24money to say boring things know that
  253. 7:26that know that do you not understand the
  254. 7:29answer is he does understand English is
  255. 7:31just a damned liar right I mean this is
  256. 7:32this is what people do okay so it's not
  257. 7:35just it's not just juggling them of
  258. 7:36course there's a whole group of people
  259. 7:37on the on the Left who say this sort of
  260. 7:41stuff the canceled culture doesn't
  261. 7:43actually exist now the reason this has
  262. 7:45come up at this moment particularly is
  263. 7:47not just because we've had a wave of
  264. 7:48cancellations a tsunami of cancellations
  265. 7:50coming for literally everyone I mean
  266. 7:52they're now going after
  267. 7:53lin-manuel Miranda and trying to he'll
  268. 7:56ruin his career for the great sin of
  269. 7:57having created a musical in which the
  270. 8:00founders are played by people of color
  271. 8:02and he didn't speak up loudly enough
  272. 8:03against black lives matter I mean
  273. 8:04they're trying to cancel lin-manuel
  274. 8:06Miranda not just criticizing him they're
  275. 8:07trying to basically suggests that maybe
  276. 8:09Hamilton shouldn't be on things like
  277. 8:10Disney applause right maybe we should
  278. 8:12remove the mechanisms of dissemination
  279. 8:13there are people who are actually doing
  280. 8:15this hey everyone will be canceled if
  281. 8:16you are not sufficiently on the left or
  282. 8:19if you have not paid obeisance to the
  283. 8:22left it would be very hard radical left
  284. 8:24then you will be cancelled well a group
  285. 8:26of academics stood up yesterday and they
  286. 8:28said well we're not you know we don't
  287. 8:29like this we're not into it
  288. 8:31they issued a letter on justice and open
  289. 8:32debate and this letter was signed by a
  290. 8:34huge group of people from right left and
  291. 8:37center
  292. 8:38included people like Wynton Marsalis the
  293. 8:40famous jazz musician and Applebaum who
  294. 8:43certainly of the of the political left
  295. 8:45is political liberal Margaret Atwood
  296. 8:46right who's the writer of The Handmaid's
  297. 8:48Tale and it extended to people like
  298. 8:50Yasha
  299. 8:51monk from the Atlantic it extended to
  300. 8:53Olivia nosy at New York Magazine
  301. 8:55Nixon Noam Chomsky all the way on the
  302. 8:57left right a defender of Pol Pot and
  303. 8:58mere Rouge Noam Chomsky was like I don't
  304. 9:00like this stuff Nicholas Christakis
  305. 9:01who's the Yale professor who was ousted
  306. 9:03from his job for the great crime of it
  307. 9:05suggesting that Halloween costumes were
  308. 9:06merely Halloween costumes right he's
  309. 9:08signed on the letter JK Rowling is on
  310. 9:10the letter Salman Rushdie is on letter
  311. 9:11Jessie single is on the letter from New
  312. 9:13York formerly of New York magazine the
  313. 9:16list is very very long Randi Weingarten
  314. 9:18the head of the American Federation of
  315. 9:19Teachers
  316. 9:19Barry Weiss is on the list Sean
  317. 9:21Weiland's from Princeton University is
  318. 9:23on the list
  319. 9:24Thomas Chatterton Williams was the
  320. 9:25writer who is black who had created the
  321. 9:28letter in the first place matthew
  322. 9:29Yglesias
  323. 9:30as we will see an important figure was
  324. 9:32was on the list I can't name on the list
  325. 9:34a single person who I believe voted for
  326. 9:36Trump I think every single one of these
  327. 9:38people so far as I can see is somebody
  328. 9:40who did not vote for Trump but these are
  329. 9:42all people who are on the political left
  330. 9:44for the most part there may be one or
  331. 9:46two exceptions but I'm hard-pressed to
  332. 9:49find them maybe Francis Fukuyama maybe
  333. 9:52but pretty much everybody else was on
  334. 9:54this list is on the political left so
  335. 9:56we're gonna get to the actual content to
  336. 9:58the letter which has generated a
  337. 9:59thousand backlashes
  338. 10:00a thousand backlashes and we'll see how
  339. 10:03it is an utterly uncontroversial letter
  340. 10:05it seems almost like virtue signaling
  341. 10:06it's like you guys were late on this
  342. 10:07bandwagon guy some of us I've been
  343. 10:09talking about this for quite a while
  344. 10:10my friend Eric Weinstein who is famous
  345. 10:12for for coming up with the term
  346. 10:13intellectual dark web to describe a
  347. 10:15group of people who just wanted to have
  348. 10:16open conversations we took inordinate
  349. 10:18incoming fire over this right four years
  350. 10:21we took incoming fire over this she was
  351. 10:22like welcome to the party pal okay so
  352. 10:24we'll get to this letter in a second
  353. 10:25because as you will see these same
  354. 10:27people who are claiming their there is
  355. 10:28no canceled culture are now attempting
  356. 10:30to cancel the people who signed the
  357. 10:32letter about the evils of canceled
  358. 10:34culture
  359. 10:35I'm not sure what's funnier people
  360. 10:36claiming that there is no cancel culture
  361. 10:37while simultaneously being key cogs in
  362. 10:39cancel culture or people who sign this
  363. 10:41letter they're been at least a couple we
  364. 10:43signed this letter to cry and cancel
  365. 10:44culture and then out of fear of
  366. 10:46cancellation unsigned the letter hey
  367. 10:48that that's been a thing that's been
  368. 10:49going on we'll get to that in just one
  369. 10:51second first let us talk about the fact
  370. 10:52that hiring these days can be incredibly
  371. 10:54difficult I mean how do you know who's
  372. 10:56the best employee there's a best swab of
  373. 10:58candidates and if you're a possible
  374. 11:00employee how do you know you're gonna
  375. 11:02get hired how's it possible to get hired
  376. 11:03in an economy with this many people out
  377. 11:04of work and attempting to get back into
  378. 11:06the workforce this is why you need it
  379. 11:08zip recruiter hiring can be difficult
  380. 11:10but if you're a company that's currently
  381. 11:11trying to hire you face new difficulties
  382. 11:13from safely reopening at your doors to
  383. 11:14finding the right person for a
  384. 11:15specialized role
  385. 11:16we here at daily wear have been using
  386. 11:18zip recruiter for years to accomplish
  387. 11:20just this purpose and find the best
  388. 11:22employees it also keeps our own
  389. 11:24employees on their toes so let's say
  390. 11:27that you screwed up the booking of a
  391. 11:28guest like producer Katy and let's
  392. 11:30suggest that producer Katy we had to
  393. 11:32find a replacement zip recruiter would
  394. 11:33be the first place that we would look
  395. 11:35housing wired could relate they needed
  396. 11:37to hire an ambitious reporter to cover

  415. 12:08okay so this letter from Harper's is
  416. 12:10what has generated in the ordinate
  417. 12:12controversy what exactly does this
  418. 12:13letter what does this letter say it says
  419. 12:15our cultural institutions are facing a
  420. 12:17moment of trial powerful protests for
  421. 12:19racial and social justice are leading to
  422. 12:21overdue demands for police reform along
  423. 12:23with wider calls for greater equality
  424. 12:24and inclusion across our society not
  425. 12:26least in higher education journalism of
  426. 12:28philanthropy and the arts but this
  427. 12:30needed reckoning has also intensified a
  428. 12:32new set of moral attitudes and political
  429. 12:34commitments that tend to weaken our
  430. 12:35norms of open debate and toleration of
  431. 12:37differences in favor of ideological
  432. 12:38conformity as we applaud the first
  433. 12:40development we also raised our voices
  434. 12:42against the second the forces of the
  435. 12:44liberalism are gaining strength
  436. 12:45throughout the world and have a powerful
  437. 12:46ally in Donald Trump represents here
  438. 12:48threat to democracy but resistance must
  439. 12:50not be allowed to harden into its own
  440. 12:52brand of dogma / or coercion which
  441. 12:54right-wing demagogues are already
  442. 12:55exploiting see the letter is so
  443. 12:57apologetic about the point that it's
  444. 12:59making I think we don't want to find
  445. 13:01ourselves on the same side of this issue
  446. 13:02as you know tucker carlson or ben
  447. 13:04shapiro we don't want to find ourselves
  448. 13:06on the same set but that's where we find
  449. 13:07ourselves and the right-wing demagogues
  450. 13:09are exploiting the fact it's all about
  451. 13:11the pouncing the right-wing remember
  452. 13:12these are all liberals signing this the
  453. 13:14right-wing is exploiting the fact the
  454. 13:15cancel culture exists and this is why we
  455. 13:17have to fight against cancel culture you
  456. 13:19know who's really bad Donald Trump is
  457. 13:21also really bad sound Trump has he's a
  458. 13:23powerful ally of liberalism okay Donald
  459. 13:27Trump has not done anything to stop free
  460. 13:29speech in the United States of America
  461. 13:30nothing nothing zero things as Donald
  462. 13:33Trump done to stop the free speech in
  463. 13:35America the Democratic conclusion we
  464. 13:37want can be achieved only if we speak
  465. 13:39out against the intolerant climate this
  466. 13:40has set on all sides so this is very
  467. 13:43tepid statement right it's very tepid
  468. 13:44statement from the center left to the
  469. 13:47left the free exchange of information
  470. 13:48and ideas the lifeblood of liberal
  471. 13:50society is daily becoming more
  472. 13:52constricted
  473. 13:53well we have come to expect this on the
  474. 13:55radical right since seriousness is also
  475. 13:57spreading more widely in our culture
  476. 13:59okay I love this
  477. 13:59it's the again the entire letter is
  478. 14:01about how we have to keep saying the
  479. 14:02right the right the right the right okay
  480. 14:04the free exchange of information ideas
  481. 14:05let me let you know secret folks the
  482. 14:08right has not been complicit in this for
  483. 14:09a long time
  484. 14:10the notion that the right unless you're
  485. 14:12talking about like a radical radical
  486. 14:13right like you're talking about like the
  487. 14:15aunt right or white supremacist or
  488. 14:16something if you're talking about like
  489. 14:17the mainstream right attempting to shut
  490. 14:19down the free exchange of information
  491. 14:20ideas that has not been a thing for a
  492. 14:22very long time which is why so many
  493. 14:24people on the Left have been texting me
  494. 14:25from their unique perches at major media
  495. 14:28institutions going why am I on your side
  496. 14:30why what's going on and I'm saying to
  497. 14:33them like listen if you get fired I'll
  498. 14:34help you find a job they're coming to me
  499. 14:35okay it's not the other way around I've
  500. 14:38been standing over here with this flag
  501. 14:39for quite a while with guys you don't
  502. 14:41get to go well you know the radical
  503. 14:42right normally normally does this sort
  504. 14:43of stuff but we've been perturbed to
  505. 14:45find the left doing this sort of set
  506. 14:46guys maybe that was true in like 1966
  507. 14:49okay it is not true in 2020 and it
  508. 14:51hasn't been true for a very long time
  509. 14:53since Orias left those are the people
  510. 14:54who are attempting to shut down my
  511. 14:55speeches on college campuses or go after
  512. 14:57my advertisers or shut down shows like
  513. 14:59mine or shut down shows on Fox News or
  514. 15:01shut down Rush Limbaugh right that is
  515. 15:02what they like what are you talking
  516. 15:04about I love this too this creation
  517. 15:06listen I'm not even a fan of this letter
  518. 15:07okay but the letter goes on right they
  519. 15:10say well we have come to expect this on
  520. 15:12the radical right sensoria sness is also
  521. 15:14spreading more widely in our culture and
  522. 15:15intolerance of opposing views a vogue
  523. 15:17for public shaming and ostracism and the
  524. 15:19tendency to dissolve complex policy
  525. 15:21issues in blinding moral certainty we
  526. 15:23have pulled the value of robust and even
  527. 15:24caustic counter speech from all quarters
  528. 15:25but it is now all too common to hear
  529. 15:27calls for swift and severe retribution
  530. 15:29in response to perceived transgressions
  531. 15:31of speech and thought not troubling
  532. 15:32still institutional leaders in a spirit
  533. 15:34of panic to damage control are
  534. 15:36delivering hasty and disproportionate
  535. 15:38punishments instead of considered
  536. 15:39reforms editors are fired for running
  537. 15:41controversial pieces that's referenced
  538. 15:42to the New York Times op-ed editor who
  539. 15:44is fired fronting in time cotton piece
  540. 15:45books are withdrawn for alleged
  541. 15:47inauthenticity that is a reference to a
  542. 15:49novel called American dirt in which a
  543. 15:51woman who was I believe not a Latina
  544. 15:54extraction
  545. 15:55she wrote a novel about illegal
  546. 15:57immigration and it was considered very
  547. 15:58very bad because she was not actually an
  548. 16:01illegal immigrant
  549. 16:01journalists are barred from writing on
  550. 16:03certain topics which happens all the
  551. 16:04time professors are investigated for
  552. 16:05quoting works of litter
  553. 16:06in class has happened several times a
  554. 16:08researcher is fired for circulating a
  555. 16:10peer-reviewed academic study that we
  556. 16:11David Shore the heads of organizations
  557. 16:12are ousted what are sometimes just
  558. 16:14clumsy mistakes that Bibi op-ed editor
  559. 16:16the Philadelphia Inquirer or the head of
  560. 16:18bone Appetit or the or the guy who is
  561. 16:20there trying to now ask from his perch
  562. 16:22over at the southern food group or
  563. 16:25whatever it is who had committed the
  564. 16:27great sin of being a white guy whatever
  565. 16:28the arguments around each particular
  566. 16:30incident the result has been to steadily
  567. 16:31narrow the boundaries of what can be
  568. 16:33said without threat of reprisal we're
  569. 16:34already paying the price in greater risk
  570. 16:36aversion among writers artists and
  571. 16:37journalists who fear for their
  572. 16:38livelihoods if they depart from the
  573. 16:39consensus or even lack sufficient zeal
  574. 16:41in agreement this cycling atmosphere
  575. 16:43will ultimately harm the most vital
  576. 16:44causes of our time the restriction of
  577. 16:46debate whether by a repressive
  578. 16:47government or an intolerant society
  579. 16:49invariably hurts those who lack power it
  580. 16:51makes everyone less capable of
  581. 16:52democratic participation is all the
  582. 16:53letter and Harper signed by again a bevy
  583. 16:55of people who are on the left like a
  584. 16:57huge solicit maybe 150 people again not
  585. 17:00a single one voted for Trump the way to
  586. 17:01defeat bad ideas is by exposure argument
  587. 17:03and persuasion not by trying to silence
  588. 17:05or wish them away we refuse any false
  589. 17:07choice between justice and freedom which
  590. 17:09cannot exist without each other as
  591. 17:11writers we need a culture that leaves us
  592. 17:12room for experimentation risk-taking and
  593. 17:14even mistakes we need to preserve the
  594. 17:16possibility of good-faith disagreement
  595. 17:17without dire professional consequences
  596. 17:18if we won't defend the very thing on
  597. 17:20which our work depends we shouldn't
  598. 17:22expect the public or the states to
  599. 17:23defend it for us
  600. 17:25except for all of the bizarre kind of
  601. 17:27slaps at the right that are just virtue
  602. 17:29signaling nonsense to their left his
  603. 17:30friends don't worry guys we're still on
  604. 17:32your side we still agree except for all
  605. 17:34of that this is basically just reality I
  606. 17:36mean that is just the reality and that
  607. 17:38is why you have people ranging from on
  608. 17:40the right people like Deirdre McCloskey
  609. 17:41all the way to folks like no I'm Chomsky
  610. 17:44on the far left right David Brooks and
  611. 17:46and no I'm Chomsky Steven Pinker and
  612. 17:49aunt Elfie Brahim right I mean at a very
  613. 17:52large swath of the laughs right Malcolm
  614. 17:55Gladwell all the way to people like
  615. 17:58Gloria Steinem and nadine strossen
  616. 17:59and so that that's a very big list of
  617. 18:02people who are again center to left
  618. 18:05what the blowback has been intense and
  619. 18:08not shocking not shocking and we'll get
  620. 18:11to that blowback in just one second
  621. 18:12because it is so telling about where we
  622. 18:14are and society that letter which is
  623. 18:15pretty straightforwardly of the left
  624. 18:18again has it the requisite slaps against
  625. 18:19Trump in the requisite slats and it
  626. 18:21slaps against the radical rides and the
  627. 18:22evil conservatives and all this stuff
  628. 18:24that letter is now being ripped up by
  629. 18:26the hard political left and in an
  630. 18:29attempt to prove the cancel culture
  631. 18:30doesn't exist and or is being
  632. 18:32exaggerated people on the list are now
  633. 18:33coming under pressure to be canceled for
  634. 18:35having signed the letter which is just
  635. 18:37perfect it's just perfect
  636. 18:39culture doesn't exist says the man is he
  637. 18:42tries to Club you into submission that's
  638. 18:44where we are right now we'll get some
  639. 18:45more of this in just one second first
  640. 18:47let's talk about the fact that you are
  641. 18:48listening to an awful lot of media right

  679. 19:55then hey so the blowback on this letter
  680. 19:57is intense and huge right the radical
  681. 19:59left is like I can't even believe that
  682. 20:01people would say that cancel culture is
  683. 20:03bad because what the radical left has
  684. 20:04been hoping to do is again push and then
  685. 20:07gain adherence simply through
  686. 20:09intimidation tactics it's like a
  687. 20:10snowball you start this enou ball effect
  688. 20:12you can sort of get people to stay
  689. 20:13silent and then once they've stayed
  690. 20:15silent then you can compel them to
  691. 20:17repeat the Nostrum so you want them to
  692. 20:18repeat and then you can get them to
  693. 20:19become part of the mob because better to
  694. 20:20be part of mob than to be eaten by the
  695. 20:22mob and so here you have an obstacle to
  696. 20:24the mob mentality that is now formed on
  697. 20:26the radical left to cancel everybody who
  698. 20:28disagrees and so you're seeing
  699. 20:29journalists reporters or like you know
  700. 20:32what his letters real bad
  701. 20:33letters real bad Felicia sign meze
  702. 20:36Washington Post national political
  703. 20:37reporter here's what she wrote she said
  704. 20:40there's definitely a debate to be had
  705. 20:41about ordinary people whose lives are
  706. 20:43turned upside down by a viral moment a
  707. 20:44phenomenon that's happening more and
  708. 20:45more these days he's not just happening
  709. 20:47it's being pushed my places like The
  710. 20:49Washington Post and The New York Times
  711. 20:50we
  712. 20:52how many incidents have we seen they've
  713. 20:53been blown up into national stories that
  714. 20:55are not even local news rather that that
  715. 20:57whole story about the woman in the bird
  716. 20:59park who had a racially tinged
  717. 21:01conversation but I was kind of nasty a
  718. 21:03racially tinged conversation with the
  719. 21:04black bird-watching guy right that was a
  720. 21:06national story that ran for like five
  721. 21:08days on the front page of the New York
  722. 21:09Times so don't tell me that this stuff
  723. 21:11is just sort of happening it's not just
  724. 21:12sort of happening sometimes the
  725. 21:14consequences are warranted and sometimes
  726. 21:15they're not each case is different
  727. 21:16suspicious on mez but high profile
  728. 21:18cancellations such as the ones alluded
  729. 21:20to in the harper's letter are a
  730. 21:20different beast and it's disingenuous to
  731. 21:22describe them in such innocuous terms as
  732. 21:24the letter does it's not about free
  733. 21:26speech it's about words and actions that
  734. 21:28harm the vulnerable and this is the line
  735. 21:30of cancel culture well I know cancel
  736. 21:31culture some of us have been describing
  737. 21:32this for years so it's a point of high
  738. 21:34irritation to people like me who've been
  739. 21:36calling this out for literally years and
  740. 21:38exactly the tactics that they are using
  741. 21:40and now people are starting to come
  742. 21:42around be like nah that's that the
  743. 21:44either saying no that's it that's not
  744. 21:45real or explicitly saying the thing I've
  745. 21:48been saying they're saying hey I give us
  746. 21:49I gave testimony in Congress in the
  747. 21:52Congressional Record and which I
  748. 21:53explicitly talked about the attempt to
  749. 21:55treat speech as violence right they when
  750. 21:58I was when I was at Berkeley people were
  751. 22:00literally chanting speech is violence
  752. 22:02because the idea is that if I say
  753. 22:04something that is that you don't like I
  754. 22:06have done it violence to you I've macro
  755. 22:08aggressive and therefore you're allowed
  756. 22:09to perform physical violence on me and
  757. 22:11or harm me or my career right that is
  758. 22:13what you're allowed to do because my
  759. 22:14words hurt your feelings and if I hurt
  760. 22:16your feelings I've done you harm its
  761. 22:19words or actions that harm the
  762. 22:20vulnerable now the beautiful thing about
  763. 22:22that standard is there is no way to
  764. 22:24disprove it because
  765. 22:25do you prove that words her mul knurl
  766. 22:27when we were all kids we used to hear
  767. 22:29sticks and stones may break your bones
  768. 22:30but words may never hurt me but we have
  769. 22:32decided to know that words aren't actual
  770. 22:33weapons words are things that hurt you
  771. 22:35and if something hurts you you're
  772. 22:36allowed to fight back the proper
  773. 22:38response to being hurt is to punch back
  774. 22:39and terror and to defend yourself and
  775. 22:41thus canceling someone and ruining their
  776. 22:43career or ruining their life getting
  777. 22:45getting them fired for no apparent
  778. 22:47reason oh you're doing this defend
  779. 22:48yourself from a farm and this is again a
  780. 22:51Washington Post a national political
  781. 22:52reporter not a not bad editor and she
  782. 22:55says a key component to the whole notion
  783. 22:56of canceled culture seems to be the
  784. 22:58denial or dismissal of that very harm as
  785. 23:00though sexual assault racial epithets
  786. 23:03and the marginalization of trans people
  787. 23:04were all frivolous things just part of
  788. 23:06some intellectual exercise okay hold on
  789. 23:08you just lump together
  790. 23:10sexual assault and the quote unquote
  791. 23:12marginalization of trans people if you
  792. 23:14are now ik waiting an attempted rape
  793. 23:16with I used the proper biological
  794. 23:19pronoun to describe a person I have a
  795. 23:21feeling that you are the problem here
  796. 23:23intellectually that's it that's a
  797. 23:25horrifying equation instead of thinking
  798. 23:28of the canceled as figures whose merits
  799. 23:30and flaws can be weighed in a vacuum
  800. 23:31why not view them within the context in
  801. 23:33which they actually exist as figures
  802. 23:34whose actually may be putting their
  803. 23:35co-workers or students or others around
  804. 23:37them at risk ah so here now we get to
  805. 23:39the crux right we can't say actually
  806. 23:41view people with their merits and flaws
  807. 23:43in a vacuum we can't view them as
  808. 23:44individuals we in the name of social
  809. 23:46justice we have to view them for the
  810. 23:47impacts their words have had this is one
  811. 23:49of the nostrils of the social justice
  812. 23:50movement one of the Nostrum says that
  813. 23:52intent doesn't matter only effect
  814. 23:54matters so if you say something
  815. 23:55perfectly innocuous and somebody else
  816. 23:57feels harmed by that that is still your
  817. 23:59fault this is one of the key points of
  818. 24:00the anti racism white fragility movement
  819. 24:03so that absolutely in table
  820. 24:06right there that's Washington Post
  821. 24:07national political reporter so part of
  822. 24:09the blowback is you don't get to claim
  823. 24:10anything about canceled culture because
  824. 24:12absolutely you're hurting people with
  825. 24:14your speech your speech is hurting
  826. 24:15people so your cancel cancel culture is
  827. 24:17good it's not just it's not just it both
  828. 24:19exists it both does not exist and it's
  829. 24:21also good is the argument that is being
  830. 24:23made right now it doesn't exist but also
  831. 24:25if it is happening it's because it's not
  832. 24:27canceled culture it's just awesomeness
  833. 24:28and get to more of this and the blowback
  834. 24:31and the predictable and the predictable
  835. 24:32walk back from some of the people who
  836. 24:34signed the letter in just a second first
  837. 24:35let's talk about the fact that now is
  838. 24:37not a great time to go to the auto parts
  839. 24:39art in fact you know what it's really
  840. 24:40never a great time to go to the auto
  841. 24:41parts store instead you should be
  842. 24:43checking out rockauto.com rockauto.com
  843. 24:45is really easy a lot easier than walking
  844. 24:47into a store and someone's demanding
  845. 24:48quick answers to things like is your
  846. 24:50Odyssey and LX or NEX and then they
  847. 24:52usually just have to order the part
  848. 24:53online anyway because there are so many
  849. 24:54types of cars it's impossible to keep
  850. 24:56them all stocked you have access to
  851. 24:57rockauto.com at your desk in your pocket
  852. 24:59rockauto.com they always offer the
  853. 25:01lowest prices possible rather than
  854. 25:03changing prices based on what the market
  855. 25:04will bear
  856. 25:05like Airlines - I spend up to twice as
  857. 25:07much or at the same parts rockauto.com
  858. 25:08is a family business serving Auto Parts
  859. 25:10customers online for 20 years go to
  860. 25:12rockauto.com shop for auto and body
  861. 25:14parts from hundreds of manufacturers
  862. 25:15best of all prices at rockauto.com are
  863. 25:17always reliably low and the same for
  864. 25:19professionals and do-it-yourselfers I
  865. 25:20spend up to twice as much before the
  866. 25:22same parts the rockauto.com catalog is
  867. 25:24unique remarkably easy to navigate
  868. 25:25quickly see all the parts available for
  869. 25:27your vehicle choose the brands
  870. 25:28specifications and prices you prefer if
  871. 25:31that amazing selection it reliably low
  872. 25:32prices and all the parts your car will
  873. 25:34ever need Rock Auto calm again head on
  874. 25:36over to rockauto.com right now see all
  875. 25:37the parts available for your car truck
  876. 25:39right Shapiro in there how did you hear
  877. 25:40about us box so they know that we sent
  878. 25:43you okay so the blowback again continues
  879. 25:45a journalist for The New York Times in
  880. 25:47Varanasi he she writes the letter right
  881. 25:51this Harper's letter was shaped slash
  882. 25:52spearheaded from conversations by for a
  883. 25:54privileged white men apparently they
  884. 25:56felt entitled it's really weigh in on
  885. 25:57racism diversity and inclusion that says
  886. 26:00it all um actually some of the key
  887. 26:03figures it was spearheaded by a writer
  888. 26:05at Thomas Jefferson Williams it was a
  889. 26:07black man so that is not actually true
  890. 26:09but again cancel the letter because too
  891. 26:12many white people involved too many
  892. 26:14white people involved and then the
  893. 26:15canceling will continue apace
  894. 26:18Matthew Iglesias who I am not a fan of
  895. 26:21as you will recall I have referred to
  896. 26:23him on the show repeatedly as the Ralph
  897. 26:24Wiggum of the internet so I'm I do not
  898. 26:27think you can count me in the Iglesias
  899. 26:29fan pack Hey how far is left gone they
  900. 26:31forced me into now defending Matthew
  901. 26:34Iglesias so well done everybody all the
  902. 26:37way around just really well done stuff
  903. 26:39there's a writer named Emily vanderwerff
  904. 26:43was a transwoman which is to say a
  905. 26:44biological man who says she is one who
  906. 26:46says he is a woman hey and she and this
  907. 26:49person writes to the editors of ox it
  908. 26:52tries to go over the head of Matthew
  909. 26:53Iglesias report of what the editors of
  910. 26:55ox came to the editors as a trans woman
  911. 26:58who very much values for position at Fox
  912. 27:00and the support the publication has
  913. 27:01given her through the emotional and
  914. 27:03physical turmoil of transition I was
  915. 27:05deeply saddened to see Matt Iglesias his
  916. 27:06signature on the Harper's Weekly letter
  917. 27:08now you may be saying yourself wait a
  918. 27:09second trans stuff isn't even mentioned
  919. 27:11in that letter like I just read the
  920. 27:13entire text of the letter to you out
  921. 27:14loud not once our trans issues mentioned
  922. 27:16not a single solitary time but says
  923. 27:19Emily vanderwerff Matt is of course
  924. 27:22entitled to his own opinion I know he's
  925. 27:24a more nuanced thinker than signing the
  926. 27:26letter would suggest thinner more
  927. 27:27nuanced thinker is just a suggestion
  928. 27:29that he didn't really know what you were
  929. 27:30signing there's no nuance to let her
  930. 27:32know there is nuance to the letter you
  931. 27:34just don't like what the letter says
  932. 27:36well I just say it write more you're not
  933. 27:39nuanced enough is a way for somebody on
  934. 27:40the left to basically sneer at you in
  935. 27:43derision and paternalistic concern for
  936. 27:45your stupidity and so Emily vanderwerff
  937. 27:48again this was written too mad at Glacia
  938. 27:49sat the editor is it at the advice where
  939. 27:51he's co-founder right has never been
  940. 27:53anything but kind to me and has often
  941. 27:54supported my work publicly all of which
  942. 27:56I'm extremely grateful for but but the
  943. 27:59letter signed as it is by several
  944. 28:01prominent anti-trans voices and
  945. 28:02containing as many dog whistles sort of
  946. 28:04anti-trans positions as it does ideally
  947. 28:06would not have been signed by anybody at
  948. 28:08Vox much less one of the most prominent
  949. 28:09people at our publication again Matt's
  950. 28:11opinions and experiences are his own he
  951. 28:13can do what he wants with his free time
  952. 28:14but his signature being on the letter
  953. 28:16makes me feel less safe at box ah there
  954. 28:19it is there it is
  955. 28:21all you have to do is just wait for it
  956. 28:23for like seven sentences eight sentences
  957. 28:24every time every time they cancel
  958. 28:27culture warriors they go - oh I feel
  959. 28:28unsafe you know what you should do you
  960. 28:30should really start something I think
  961. 28:31you can call it maybe like the Committee
  962. 28:33on Public Safety you can call it the
  963. 28:34Committee on Public Safety and then you
  964. 28:37can just go around canceling people and
  965. 28:39if you don't really it really if you got
  966. 28:40a problem you just behead them in fact
  967. 28:42like the Committee on Public Safety
  968. 28:44which was a four
  969. 28:46we're not hitting the reference this
  970. 28:47ended in an overt reference to the
  971. 28:50French Revolution the Committee of
  972. 28:51Public Safety was the provisional
  973. 28:53government of France during the reign of
  974. 28:54terror that's why I'm making the
  975. 28:55reference you can call it the Committee
  976. 28:57on Public Safety because your safety has
  977. 28:58been threatened don't you see you've
  978. 28:59been threatened by the fact that Mathieu
  979. 29:01Iglesias signed on to an extraordinarily
  980. 29:02anodyne letter about the evils of
  981. 29:04council culture and you can say well you
  982. 29:06know as a trans woman I now feel
  983. 29:08threatened so the letter can
  984. 29:10simultaneously suggest that the person
  985. 29:11that you're writing about quote has
  986. 29:12never been anything but kind to me and
  987. 29:14has often supported my work publicly but
  988. 29:16also his opinion that makes me feel less
  989. 29:19safe so so unsafe so much unsafe miss
  990. 29:22happening well they used the exact same
  991. 29:24excuse by the way for firing Kevin
  992. 29:26Williamson at the Atlantic right they
  993. 29:27hired Kevin Williamson at the Atlantic
  994. 29:28and then a bunch of feminists said I
  995. 29:30feel unsafe that Kevin Williamson has
  996. 29:32been hired at the Atlantic he said in
  997. 29:33like his he's sitting on his house in in
  998. 29:36Texas you never met any of these people
  999. 29:38like I feel so unsafe I'm feeling so
1000. 29:40unsafe really did you send a death
1001. 29:42threat to you did you leave like an
1002. 29:43anonymous phone call on your phone what
1003. 29:45exactly did he do what did mad at
1004. 29:46Glacius do to emily vanderwerff did you
1005. 29:49call this person up on their phone and
  1006. 29:50say I think that you are a biological
  1007. 29:53man and therefore I dismiss your
1008. 29:56existence like what exactly is the big
1009. 29:57threatening thing Matt Iglesias did he
1010. 29:59didn't say anything about trans stuff
1011. 30:00Matt Iglesias agrees with this person on
  1012. 30:02trans policies he's written about it
1013. 30:04extensively okay look what are you what
  1014. 30:07but apparently it's a threat to safety
1015. 30:08for this person to even appear on a list
1016. 30:11of people like JK Rowling as JK Rowling
1017. 30:15said wow that's really what this letter
1018. 30:16is this particular blowback is about JK
1019. 30:17Rowling who said that biological women
1020. 30:19exist which by the way is not a
1021. 30:21threatening position I'm sorry it is not
1022. 30:22a threat to your safety for me to point
1023. 30:24out that a biological man is in fact a
1024. 30:26biological man and not a woman okay that
1025. 30:28is not a threat to your safety I'm not
1026. 30:30saying anything bad should happen to you
1027. 30:31I think anybody who tries to threaten
1028. 30:34you should go to jail right the law
1029. 30:35applies to you just as it applies to
1030. 30:37everyone else but the idea is if you
1031. 30:38disagree with you if you make me feel
1032. 30:40lesser if you make me feel bad then
1033. 30:42you've threatened my safety and you have
1034. 30:44threatened my safety your words are more
1035. 30:47damaging than me ruining your career or
1036. 30:49going or going to the editors at your
  1037. 30:50publication and publicly it's back by
1038. 30:52the way let me just say this Matt
  1039. 30:54Iglesias you're the co-founder of box if
1040. 30:56somebody at my organization said
  1041. 30:58something like this
1042. 30:59like put out a public letter suggesting
1043. 31:01that I had threatened their safety for
  1044. 31:02an opinion of mine
1045. 31:03it'll be out on their ass the next day I
1046. 31:04would fire them the next day the next
1047. 31:06day because let me explain I run my
1048. 31:09publication okay and I'm not gonna take
1049. 31:12crap from staffers who believe that
  1050. 31:13opinions are threatening to safety I'm
1051. 31:17not gonna be accused of threatening
1052. 31:18someone's safety for signing onto an
1053. 31:19anodyne opinion about how council
  1054. 31:21culture is generally bad
1055. 31:23Emily vanderwerff says his signature on
1056. 31:25the letter makes me feel less safe at
1057. 31:27box and believe slightly less in its
1058. 31:28stated goals of building more diverse in
  1059. 31:30more thoughtful workplace on a more
1060. 31:31practical level the presence of math
1061. 31:33suites and his signature to a letter
1062. 31:34like this do make my job slightly more
1063. 31:36difficult do they do they really as it
1064. 31:39would be readers and sources who often
1065. 31:41equate my positions with his after all
1066. 31:43he remains one of our most prominent
  1067. 31:44staffers I don't want Matt to be
1068. 31:46reprimands or fired or even asked to
1069. 31:48submit an apology doing any of the above
1070. 31:50would only solidify in his own mind the
1071. 31:52idea that he's being martyred for his
1072. 31:53beliefs but I do want to make clear that
1073. 31:54those beliefs cost him nothing they are
  1074. 31:56not particularly risky they're not
  1075. 31:58particularly sound even I'm used to
1076. 32:00hearing them from people who believe my
1077. 32:01own lived experiences pale in comparison
1078. 32:03to their own momentary social media
1079. 32:06discomfort I'm sorry to find that among
1080. 32:07those voices okay and no point at a
1081. 32:09Glacia is compare his experiences in
1082. 32:10life to this Emily under more character
  1083. 32:12I mean it's just it's amazing it's
1084. 32:14amazing so calling out Matthew Iglesias
1085. 32:16publicly these Matthew Glacius was bad
1086. 32:19enough to sign this letter it well this
1087. 32:21this sort of pressure which is bubbled
1088. 32:23up again there's nothing in the letter
1089. 32:25it's about trans people not a single
1090. 32:26thing in the letter in fact the letter
1091. 32:29basically says we are members of the
1092. 32:30left we support if you just read that
1093. 32:32letter in any objective way what you
1094. 32:34would come away with is they support all
1095. 32:35of the propaganda put forth by the trans
1096. 32:37movement generally right JK Rowling is
1097. 32:39on the letter because it doesn't make
1098. 32:40that explicit but the whole thing is
1099. 32:42about social justice and equality and we
1100. 32:44hate Trump and all of this like if you
1101. 32:45just read that letter without knowing
1102. 32:47any of the signatories there's no way
1103. 32:49you could possibly come away with the
1104. 32:50opinion that the people who wrote that
1105. 32:51letter do anything except support the
  1106. 32:54idea that a biological man can become a
1107. 32:55woman right I mean that just does not
1108. 32:57exist in the text of the letter but
1109. 32:58what's hilarious is that there are these
1110. 33:00tweets that are going around things like
1111. 33:01one of the things you should think about
1112. 33:02in that letter are are you responsible
1113. 33:04for the actions and opinions of people
1114. 33:06who are also signatories to the letter
1115. 33:08should we assume that if you're mad at
1116. 33:10Glacius you now agree with JK Rowling on
1117. 33:12trans issues of course not that's the
1118. 33:14stupidest thing I've ever heard in my
1119. 33:15entire life should we assume that
  1120. 33:17Matthew Iglesias is also a Cambodian
1121. 33:19genocide denier like Noam Chomsky like
  1122. 33:21no if I sign on to a letter with a bunch
1123. 33:23of other people the text of the letter
1124. 33:24is what we have in common okay that's it
1125. 33:26is nothing else there is no way to
1126. 33:28compute any other agreements on any
1127. 33:30other issue other than the letter that
1128. 33:33we have commonly signed right there
1129. 33:35what in the world but what does this
1130. 33:36result and it results in people starting
1131. 33:38to pull down their support so one of the
  1132. 33:40original signatories was a person named
  1133. 33:42Jennifer Finney Boylan who's a trans
  1134. 33:43person a Trent I believe Jenna correct I
1135. 33:46believe that Jennifer I'm gonna look it
1136. 33:48up just to make sure but Jennifer Finney
1137. 33:49Boylan writes for The New York Times and
  1138. 33:51is in fact a Trent yeah a transgender
1139. 33:53activist professor at Barnard College of
1140. 33:55a Columbia University and this person
1141. 33:58put out a statement quote I did not know
1142. 34:00who else had signed that letter I
  1143. 34:01thought I was endorsing a well-meaning
1144. 34:03if vague message against internet
  1145. 34:04shaming I didn't know Chomsky Steinem an
1146. 34:06Atwood were in and I thought good
1147. 34:07company first of all this demonstrates
1148. 34:09your perspective when you think that
1149. 34:10Noam Chomsky is good company and Gloria
1150. 34:12Steinem is great company but says
1151. 34:13Jennifer Finney Boylan the consequences
1152. 34:15are mind to bear I am so sorry I'm so
1153. 34:19sorry so out of fear of being canceled
1154. 34:23and being ostracized by the trans rights
1155. 34:25community a trans person we signed on to
1156. 34:28the letter now has to now has to
  1157. 34:29apologize hey then there's a person
1158. 34:31named Kerry Greenidge Kerry greenage is
1159. 34:34one of the signatories and I believe is
1160. 34:38the Mellon assistant professor in the
1161. 34:40department of studies of race
1162. 34:41colonialism and diaspora at Tufts
1163. 34:43University and so this is a person very
1164. 34:45much I've left so Kerry Greenidge signed
1165. 34:47the letter and then wrote in a tweet I
  1166. 34:49do not endorse this harper's letter i'm
  1167. 34:51in contact with harper's about a
1168. 34:52retraction so people are now walking
  1169. 34:55this stuff back right
1170. 34:57walk it back because the blowback
1171. 34:58canceled culture isn't real and also you
1172. 35:00will be canceled if you sign a letter
1173. 35:01saying the canceled culture is real
  1174. 35:03really well done everyone
1175. 35:05really well done well get to more of

1178. 35:10get to the cadre of people will never be
  1179. 35:11cancelled in just a second and I'll
  1180. 35:13point out a couple of outstanding
1181. 35:15instances of how canceled culture comes
1182. 35:17for us all like death and taxes in just
  1183. 35:19one second first if you've been

1250. 37:11are afraid of saying that it's an saying
1251. 37:13that's real well you if you say
1252. 37:16Beetlejuice three times cancel culture

1271. 37:46conservative podcast in the nation
  1272. 37:49[Music]
  1273. 37:52you
1274. 37:54okay so how about is canceled culture
1275. 37:56cancel culture is so bad that we have
1276. 37:57now cancelled acting and also research
1277. 37:59these are a couple things that we have
  1278. 38:00cancelled but don't worry it doesn't
1279. 38:01exist and if you mentioned it exists
  1280. 38:03then you are a threat to somebody else's
1281. 38:05safety there are threats of somebody
1282. 38:06else's safety so how do we just cancel
1283. 38:08acting well we've had in the past
1284. 38:09what couple of years several
1285. 38:11high-profile actresses who have been
1286. 38:13told that they are not allowed to play
1287. 38:14trans people and if you want to cast a
1288. 38:16trans person the person has to be trans
1289. 38:18so in other words let's say that you
1290. 38:19want to play a trans man which means a
1291. 38:21biological woman who believes that that
1292. 38:23she is a male let's say that you want to
1293. 38:25play that and you are a biological woman
1294. 38:27which seems like it checks most of the
  1295. 38:29marks for playing a biological woman
  1296. 38:31like last I checked playing a biological
  1297. 38:33woman who believes she's a man that
1298. 38:36seems like you should be able to play
  1299. 38:37that if you're a biological woman
1300. 38:38correct like just putting it out there
  1301. 38:40all right that's like saying you have a
  1302. 38:42black person who believes in a
  1303. 38:44particular cause so if you're a black
1304. 38:46person you should be able to play that
  1305. 38:47person even if you don't necessarily
1306. 38:49believe in that political closet I mean
1307. 38:50that that's called thing guys okay so
1308. 38:54but here you can fulfill the physical
  1309. 38:56criteria
1310. 38:57and because again biological woman
1311. 38:59playing biological woman so apparently
  1312. 39:03not we've had a couple of situations in
1313. 39:05the recent past in which this has not
  1314. 39:06been the case
1315. 39:07first of all just pointing out from
1316. 39:09Hollywood's perspective if you are not a
1317. 39:11trans person and you play a trans person
1318. 39:13in any iteration win an Oscar or Elise
  1319. 39:15nominated for one right surely don't
1320. 39:17want an Oscar like a couple of years ago
1321. 39:19for Dallas buyers club playing a trans
1322. 39:20person and I believe Eddie Redmayne was
1323. 39:23was nominated for an Oscar for playing a
1324. 39:24trans person a couple of years ago so
1325. 39:26it's pretty much gold ticket to Oscar
1326. 39:28him but not anymore not anymore now it's
  1327. 39:29all stopped Scarlett Johansson you'll
1328. 39:31recall about a year ago was supposed to
  1329. 39:32play a trans person in a movie those I
  1330. 39:34think called rub-and-tug
1331. 39:35or something and the movie was canceled
1332. 39:38because Scarlett Johansson is in fact a
1333. 39:40woman a biological woman who does not
1334. 39:42believe that she is a biological man and
1335. 39:43therefore not trans hey Halle Berry just
1336. 39:45went through the same thing so Halle
1337. 39:46Berry was about to be cast in a story
  1338. 39:48about a trans man meaning a biological
1339. 39:50woman and now she's pulled out of this
1340. 39:53her is the statement she released with
1341. 39:55the full malice struggle session
1342. 39:56attached this is the best acting frankly
1343. 39:58that Halle Berry has done since monster
1344. 39:59monsters balls right here in this
1345. 40:00statement first of all I'm also gonna
1346. 40:02need an explanation on why Halle Berry
1347. 40:04was able to play in x-men character when
1348. 40:07she's fat she's in fact not a mutant if
1349. 40:09she actually is not a mutant and yet
1350. 40:11she's playing a mutant who can shoot
1351. 40:12lightning from her from her fingertips
1352. 40:13I'm gonna need like an explanation as to
1353. 40:16the bigotry against lightning fingertips
1354. 40:17mutants anyway Halle Berry says over the
1355. 40:20weekend I had the opportunity to discuss
1356. 40:22my consideration of an upcoming role as
1357. 40:24a transgender man I'd like to apologize
  1358. 40:26for those remarks as a cisgender woman I
  1359. 40:28now understand I should not have
1360. 40:29considered this role and that the
  1361. 40:31transgender community should undeniably
1362. 40:33have the opportunity to tell their own
1363. 40:34stories okay by the way this is now two
1364. 40:37oscar-winning actresses who would have
1365. 40:39greatly increased the profile of the
1366. 40:41trans movement who have now been
1367. 40:43cancelled or even considering these
1368. 40:45roles I'm grateful for the guidance and
1369. 40:46critical conversations over the past few
1370. 40:48days and I will continue to listen
1371. 40:49educate and learn from this mistake man
1372. 40:52these now struggle sessions they are
1373. 40:53they are not entertaining I will say
1374. 40:55that I vowed to be an ally in using my
  1375. 40:57voice from a better representation on
1376. 40:58screen both in front of and behind the
1377. 41:00camera so acting is now against the law
  1378. 41:02we can we can
1379. 41:04we can only have by the way I'm about to
  1380. 41:07make a joke but it's not actually a job
  1381. 41:08we can only have somebody who's a
  1382. 41:09quadriplegic play a quadriplegic that's
1383. 41:12a thing that actually was discussed
1384. 41:13right about Ballack breaking bad guy
1385. 41:16right breaking bad guy was supposed to
1386. 41:18what's his name name of the actor Brian
  1387. 41:22hunter and Bryan Cranston
  1388. 41:23he plays a quadriplegic in a movie and
1389. 41:24people like why didn't you cast an
  1390. 41:26actual quadriplegic because it's acting
  1391. 41:29you idiots
  1392. 41:29we're now cancelling acting well they're
1393. 41:33casting upcoming Peter Pan and a friend
1394. 41:35of mine online Steven Miller not the one
1395. 41:37who works for Trump Stephen Miller
1396. 41:39tweeted out what why exactly are we
  1397. 41:41considering somebody who isn't naturally
  1398. 41:42hook-handed to play Captain Hook he's
  1399. 41:45apparently they're considering Jude Law
1400. 41:46to play Captain Hook he's been cast but
1401. 41:48captain he doesn't know the pain of
1402. 41:50having to live with an actual hook hand
1403. 41:52we need to cast somebody who actually
1404. 41:53has a hook Brad and we need like the guy
1405. 41:56that we need that that cleric from
  1406. 41:57London there's a hook for a hand to play
1407. 41:58Captain Hook that's the only way that we
1408. 42:00can really make this thing happen it's
1409. 42:02just incredible so everyone will be
1410. 42:03canceled the canceled culture comes for
1411. 42:05everyone Halle Berry is canceled other
1412. 42:07people or cancel so Princeton University
1413. 42:10they have they have a group of faculty
1414. 42:11who are now demanding I'm not kidding
  1415. 42:13you a committee to investigate research
1416. 42:15and publications for racism hey this is
1417. 42:18crazy and by the way the sort of stuff
1418. 42:20does exist already we've seen cases in
1419. 42:21which Brown University for example hold
  1420. 42:23down a full-on study about rapid onset
1421. 42:26gender dysphoria because there were so
1422. 42:27many people to school her mad at the
1423. 42:29research the research was bad she had to
1424. 42:31pull it down because there was somebody
1425. 42:32there who pointed out by correctly that
1426. 42:35there's been a rapid rise in the number
1427. 42:36of young females who are identifying as
1428. 42:38trans and it seems to be run run this
1429. 42:39mentality seems to run roughshod from
1430. 42:41small social groups he have one girl
1431. 42:42with a bunch of friends they all have
1432. 42:44other problems and one of the girls says
1433. 42:46I'm trans and suddenly many of them are
  1434. 42:48saying they're trans rapid onset gender
  1435. 42:49dysphoria it's fairly well substantiated
1436. 42:51at this point this researcher from Brown
1437. 42:53had her study pulled down and the school
1438. 42:55basically apologized for the study so
  1439. 42:56research was being censored we're
1440. 42:57singing out my friend Abigail Schreyer
  1441. 42:59graduate of Yale Law
1442. 43:01hey Abigail Abigail wrote a book about
1443. 43:04rapid onset gender dysphoria and amazon
1444. 43:07quickly sends her to any advertisement
1445. 43:08for it a research is now being silent so
  1446. 43:10the on July 4th a roughly 4,000 word
1447. 43:13open letter signed by hundreds of
1448. 43:15members of the Princeton University
1449. 43:16faculty was sent to the president
  1450. 43:18Provost Dean's and members of the
  1451. 43:19cabinet of the university listing a
1452. 43:20series of demands related to racial
  1453. 43:22justice including a committee composed
1454. 43:24entirely of faculty that would oversee
1455. 43:26the investigation and discipline of
1456. 43:28racist behaviors incidents research and
1457. 43:30publication on the part of faculty so
  1458. 43:32now you're going to have a racially
1459. 43:35diverse Committee on Public Safety over
1460. 43:37at Princeton University that is going to
1461. 43:40go through and decide what sort of
1462. 43:42research is okay what sort of research
  1463. 43:45is okay
1464. 43:47of actions also demanded acknowledged
  1465. 43:49credit and intensifies anti-racist
  1466. 43:51student activism such acknowledgement
1467. 43:53should at a minimum take the form of
1468. 43:54repair or reparative action beginning
  1469. 43:56with a formal public university apology
1470. 43:57to the members of the Black Justice
1471. 43:59League and their allies other demands
1472. 44:02include nominating no fewer than two
1473. 44:03faculty members of color for annual
  1474. 44:05elections 2 C 3 C 7 and committees on
  1475. 44:07diversity commit to anti-racist campus
1476. 44:11iconography beginning with the removal
1477. 44:12of the John wither since Witherspoon
1478. 44:14statute Wetherspoon is considered maybe
1479. 44:15the founder of Princeton University but
1480. 44:18he held slaves and therefore we have to
  1481. 44:20remove the statue
1482. 44:22and then the letter concludes we
1483. 44:24understand some of these suggestions are
1484. 44:26implementable now others will require
1485. 44:27more time to enact we would be grateful
1486. 44:29for the opportunity to meet with you to
1487. 44:30discuss the measures and actions
1488. 44:31proposed to rent and expedience timeline
1489. 44:33so again the worst demand here is that
1490. 44:36they're going to constitute committee
1491. 44:38composed entirely of faculty that would
1492. 44:40oversee the investigation and discipline
1493. 44:42of racist behaviour racism is not
1494. 44:43defined in this document for grievance
1495. 44:45and appeal to be spelled out in rules
1496. 44:46and procedures of the faculty guidelines
1497. 44:48on what counts as racist behavior
1498. 44:50incidents research and publication will
1499. 44:52be authored by a faculty committee for
1500. 44:54incorporation into the same set of rules
1501. 44:55and procedures so in other words my ADA
1502. 44:57grants a blank check that we can call
1503. 44:58racist whomever we want and shut down
1504. 45:00and shut down anybody who participates
1505. 45:03in behavior we now deem as racist
1506. 45:04including research and publication ok if
1507. 45:08you think that this is not a threat to
1508. 45:09freedom of thought and freedom its
1509. 45:10feature out of your mind or out of your
1510. 45:12mind and thus I will admit that I am
1511. 45:15grateful for the simple fact if you are
1512. 45:17in a position of public power and just
1513. 45:19say no just say no to cancel culture
1514. 45:21guys just like you should have said no
1515. 45:22to drugs in the nineteen eighties just
1516. 45:24say no to cancel cultures if your
1517. 45:25prominent enough you can say no and you
1518. 45:27know what nobody can do anything about
  1519. 45:29it
1520. 45:29JK Rowling saying no is important
1521. 45:31because she refused to be cancelled and
1522. 45:33thus she has not cancelled you know who
1523. 45:35else they're trying to cancel these days
1524. 45:36of course Zuckerberg over at Facebook so
  1525. 45:38they're these organizations leftist
1526. 45:40left-wing organizations or attempting to
1527. 45:42shut the door to free speech on Facebook
1528. 45:44by basically trying to club
1529. 45:46organizations but big corporations into
  1530. 45:49pulling their advertisement from
1531. 45:50Facebook until Facebook restrict speech
1532. 45:51to the preferred forms of speech that
1533. 45:54are approved by wild leftist groups like
1534. 45:57the ADL and Color of Change
  1535. 46:00the group's had a get-together with Mark
1536. 46:04Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg over at
1537. 46:05Facebook trying to basically blackmail
1538. 46:07into changing Zuckerberg position on
  1539. 46:09free speech I distinguishes Zuckerberg
1540. 46:11from the other leaders of these of these
1541. 46:12groups because Zuckerberg has openly
1542. 46:14committed to free speech and he's not
1543. 46:16taken the sort of censorious positions
1544. 46:17of many of these other social media
  1545. 46:19leaders I mean it's been very public
1546. 46:20about this but apparently civil rights
  1547. 46:22leaders called meeting very
1548. 46:23disappointing and blasted Facebook for
  1549. 46:25being functionally flawed in a media
1550. 46:27call after the meeting where Schad
1551. 46:28robinson head of color of change said of
1552. 46:30facebook's executives they showed up to
  1553. 46:31the meeting expecting an A for
1554. 46:32attendance attending alone is not enough
1555. 46:35Facebook said in a statement the groups
1556. 46:37want Facebook to be free of hate speech
  1557. 46:38and so do we
1558. 46:39they said they were taking the steps to
1559. 46:41keep hate off the platform they said we
1560. 46:43know we'll be judged by our actions that
1561. 46:44not bad words but bottom line is that
1562. 46:46once you cave once you start keeping to
1563. 46:48the woke social justice warriors they
1564. 46:50expect you to constantly cave right it
1565. 46:52never stops you'll be rolled into the
1566. 46:54snowball and the snowball we push
1567. 46:55downhill you just have to go along with
1568. 46:56all of this I'll point out at Facebook
1569. 46:59refusing to go along with all of this
1570. 47:00it's having no impact on stock price is
1571. 47:03why I say you can just say no to cancel
1572. 47:04culture you can and you should investors
1573. 47:07are not worried about the advertisers
1574. 47:09boycotting Facebook the fact is from
  1575. 47:11what I understand Facebook actually
1576. 47:12makes most of its money because small
1577. 47:14businesses use it for advertising not
1578. 47:15because you have major corporations
1579. 47:17dropping a couple mil Hillar here or
1580. 47:19there on advertising Facebook shares hit
1581. 47:21an all-time high for the company on the
1582. 47:23same day that they were being boycotted
  1583. 47:24so cancel culture doesn't actually work
1584. 47:26right that's the dirty little secret is
  1585. 47:27that unless you are a low-level employee
1586. 47:29and can actually be bullied into being
  1587. 47:30fired right then cancel culture doesn't
1588. 47:32work all these organizations have to do
1589. 47:34is just say no we're not gonna do it
1590. 47:35we're not gonna do it
1591. 47:36you're only cancelled if you agree to be
  1592. 47:37canceled there's there's one other group
1593. 47:40of people who are never canceled and
1594. 47:42that is if your radical left enough
1595. 47:43nothing you do will ever be even called
1596. 47:45up for question by the canceled culture
1597. 47:47because the right does not have the
1598. 47:48capacity to cancel the left and the left
1599. 47:50does not have the capacity to cancel the
1600. 47:51right so ironically enough the people
1601. 47:53who are most vulnerable are the people
1602. 47:54in the center of our politics so if
1603. 47:57you're a centrist and you are working in
  1604. 47:58a left-wing organization
  1605. 48:01chat you get canceled if you're a right
  1606. 48:02winger you're probably not working in a
  1607. 48:03left-wing organization right you're
  1608. 48:04vulnerable if you work for a left-wing
  1609. 48:06organization but right-wingers and left
1610. 48:08wingers have basically self polarized at
1611. 48:09this point so that means people in the
1612. 48:10center are the most vulnerable if you're
1613. 48:12on the right and you're in your living
1614. 48:13being on the right you're not gonna get
1615. 48:14cancelled by the right if you're on the
1616. 48:16left and you're on your living from the
1617. 48:17left the right has no capacity to cancel
1618. 48:19you and the left doesn't care about
1619. 48:20cancelling you because anything and
1620. 48:22everything you do and say that is bad
  1621. 48:23and terrible it's perfectly acceptable
1622. 48:25right you'll never be canceled ever and
1623. 48:28the agenda never stops on the radical
1624. 48:29left because let's be real about this
1625. 48:31cancel culture is just the is just the
1626. 48:33club with which the social justice
1627. 48:34warriors who hope to remould all of
1628. 48:36American society in their image beat
  1629. 48:38people into submission that's all that's
1630. 48:40happening here and the crusade is very
1631. 48:41clear right the goal here is very very
1632. 48:43obvious so Chama Salman was a socialist
1633. 48:46city council member of Seau she was
1634. 48:47considered an oddity way back when when
1635. 48:49I was doing a Sean Casey th radio Sean
1636. 48:51Casey th back in 2014 she was mostly
1637. 48:53considered just this kooky oddity we
1638. 48:55said weird things about how we need to
  1639. 48:56demilitarize Boeing and we're gonna
1640. 48:58occupy Boeing and all this kind of crazy
1641. 48:59crap she was pushing $15 minimum wage
1642. 49:01and now she has considered sort of a a
1643. 49:04rabble-rousing leader on the Seattle
1644. 49:05City Council she made clear immediately
1645. 49:09after basically you know getting chided
1646. 49:12by Mayor Jenny zirkon for trying to lead
1647. 49:15a revolution after passing an Amazon tax
1648. 49:17which has a head tax and Amazon
1649. 49:18employees which will help drive Amazon
1650. 49:20out of the city Shona Solomon said I'm
1651. 49:22coming for all the fortune 500 companies
1652. 49:24we're coming after all of them and we're
1653. 49:26coming after capitalism generally the
1654. 49:27agenda is pretty obvious here it has
1655. 49:29nothing to do with making the country
1656. 49:30better and everything to do with
1657. 49:31overthrowing the system entirely we are
1658. 49:34fighting for far more than this tax we
1659. 49:37are preparing the ground for a different
1660. 49:39kind of society and if you Jeff Bezos
1661. 49:42want to drive that process forward by
1662. 49:45lashing out against us in our modest
1663. 49:47demands then so be it because we are
1664. 49:50coming for you and your rotten system we
1665. 49:54are coming to dismantle this deeply
1666. 49:56oppressive racist sexist violent utterly
1667. 50:00bankrupt system of capitalism this
  1668. 50:02police state she's never gonna be
1669. 50:05cancelled because for the left none of
1670. 50:08this is cancelable right what counts as
1671. 50:10a cancelable offense is the big question
1672. 50:11here the left things that unite counts
  1673. 50:13it's cancelable offenses include
1674. 50:15everything in America should be torn
1675. 50:16down or out in your ears and also maybe
  1676. 50:18violent criminal activity I mean the
1677. 50:19left won't even cancel people who engage
1678. 50:21in looting they're trying to bail them
1679. 50:22out in the middle of the riots and illa
1680. 50:24had Omar will not be canceled for
1681. 50:25suggesting we have to rip down the
1682. 50:26entire economic and political system of
1683. 50:28the United States and the representative
1684. 50:30from Minnesota who was taken in by the
1685. 50:33most glorious nation in human history
  1686. 50:34the United States after living a
  1687. 50:36childhood in war-torn Somalia has come
1688. 50:38to the United States and decided that
1689. 50:40the entire US system must be taken down
  1690. 50:42hey she's an American citizen she's
1691. 50:44entitled to her opinion this is also a
1692. 50:46horrific ly I would say terrible and
1693. 50:49particularly ungrateful position to take
1694. 50:51about a country it took in you and your
1695. 50:53family from one of the worst hell holes
1696. 50:55on earth and Somalia there is no way to
1697. 50:56define it as a non hellhole it is a
1698. 50:58hellhole okay like that that is just
1699. 51:00what is it is a war-torn hellhole it has
1700. 51:01been for decades and she comes here and
1701. 51:04is taken in and she's an American
1702. 51:05citizen just as American as you or I but
1703. 51:07her position on Americans that America
1704. 51:09sucks it needs to be torn down all of
1705. 51:11the pillars have to be torn out as long
1706. 51:14as our economy and political systems
  1707. 51:17prioritize profit without considering
1708. 51:21who is profiting who is being shut out
1709. 51:24we will perpetuate this inequality so we
1710. 51:29cannot stop at criminal justice system
1711. 51:31we must begin the work of dismantling
1712. 51:34the whole system of oppression wherever
1713. 51:38we find it okay so she won't be canceled
1714. 51:41obviously because too much had left
1715. 51:42agrees with this basic premise other
1716. 51:44people who will not be cancelled include
1717. 51:45why were Eagles wide receiver DeSean
  1718. 51:47Jackson reposted a quote saying that
1719. 51:48white Jews will blackmail and extort
1720. 51:50America and quoted Louis Farrakhan and
1721. 51:51then apparently quoted Hitler right
  1722. 51:54featured Nancy's met a quote on his
1723. 51:55social media feed he attributed it Adolf
1724. 51:56Hitler DeSean Jackson um and people are
1725. 51:59like well we have to inform him and
1726. 52:01tried him the Eagles put out some
  1727. 52:02ridiculous statements suggesting we've
  1728. 52:04had a talk with DeSean Jackson let's put
  1729. 52:05it this way it's a challenge Jackson
1730. 52:06were white and quote and Hitler how long
1731. 52:08do you think he'd be in the NFL like
1732. 52:10gone right but if you're on the if
1733. 52:12you're on the proper woke side of the
1734. 52:14aisle like ice cube you can be as Anne
1735. 52:16siese Americans you want to be the last
1736. 52:17hatred that is allowed in the United
1737. 52:19States is hatred of Jews obviously in
1738. 52:22sort of the traditional Canon of hatred
1739. 52:24of groups you can you as long as you're
1740. 52:26on the right side you'll never be
  1741. 52:27canceled so
1742. 52:28the way that this works it meanwhile I
1743. 52:31want to make a quick note here about
  1744. 52:33covet 19 deaths so coca 19 deaths spiked
1745. 52:37yesterday in terms of the numbers that
1746. 52:38we saw it's hard to tell what that
1747. 52:40spiked from yesterday is really
1748. 52:41attributable to a big spike that has
1749. 52:43happened in deaths or anything was
  1750. 52:45something like 900 and some deaths
1751. 52:47yesterday from COBIT or whether that is
1752. 52:49just reporting after the long weekend
1753. 52:50meaning that that was reporting from
  1754. 52:52Tuesday and there was a three-day
  1755. 52:53weekend so a lot of people didn't go
1756. 52:55into the hospital some of those deaths
  1757. 52:56didn't get reported and so they're
1758. 52:57usually this usually happens right the
1759. 52:59Monday count is usually pretty low
  1760. 53:00because you're getting reporting from
1761. 53:01Sunday and then the Tuesday count is a
1762. 53:03little bit higher and then the Wednesday
1763. 53:04count is typically higher than that so
1764. 53:06we'll keep an eye on on that obviously
1765. 53:09as I've been saying we should continue
1766. 53:11to be careful but I'm still cautiously
1767. 53:13optimistic the death rates have declined
1768. 53:14pretty significantly and we will keep
1769. 53:16you informed should any of that change
1770. 53:18in in radical fashion okay we'll be back
1771. 53:20here tomorrow for much more content so
  1772. 53:23stick around for that
1773. 53:23in the meantime head on over to daily
