Can You Safely Drink Your Own Pee? — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00This is Mr. Beast and this is Mr. Beast
- 0:03pee. And my goal in this video is to use
- 0:05science to purify this into perfectly
- 0:07drinkable water. At which point he will
- 0:09drink his own pee.
- 0:10>> Wait, you didn't tell me that part. I'm
- 0:11going to drink my own pee.
- 0:12>> But it's for a really good cause.
- 0:14Because if I can figure out how to do
- 0:15this, then the same technology could be
- 0:17used to help the two billion people
- 0:18without access to clean drinking water
- 0:20to purify even the dirtiest water that
- 0:23looks like this. Or even much, much
- 0:25worse. Ew. Step one was to find a place
- 0:28on the planet where you'd have a really
- 0:29hard time finding clean water, but a
- 0:31really easy time finding clever brain
- 0:34solving that problem. And that just
- 0:35happened to be Kenya. So step two was to
- 0:38go there and meet the people doing just
- 0:39that.
- 0:41[Music]
- 0:47Now, the first thing you notice when you
- 0:48get to Kenya isn't so much the elephant
- 0:50crossings or the random baboon families
- 0:52you see walking around. It's these
- 0:54yellow jugs you see people carrying
- 0:56everywhere. And as it turns out, those
- 0:57jugs are meant to carry water. And as it
- 0:59also turns out, they were all headed to
- 1:01the same place I was. Ruthie.
- 1:04>> Hey, Mark.
- 1:05>> Who knew Kenya was so far?
- 1:07>> But so beautiful. Welcome.
- 1:09>> Very beautiful. I'll give you that. This
- 1:11lovely human is Ruthie, and she works
- 1:13for Give Power. And they build a magical
- 1:16machine that can turn even the most
- 1:17disgusting water into pure drinking
- 1:19water using only the power of the sun.
- 1:21So, we changed literal ocean water into
- 1:24fresh drinking water. I'll have you
- 1:26taste.
- 1:26>> I think you'll like it.
- 1:27>> Don't try and influence the judge,
- 1:29Ruthie. And when I tasted a cup of water
- 1:30from either side of their treatment
- 1:32process, hopes and prayers. Let's go.
- 1:34With the before water, you could really
- 1:36taste the before. That tastes like sea
- 1:39water.
- 1:39>> It is sea water.
- 1:40>> This is what people drink. Yes. And the
- 1:42reason for that is 96% of the homes you
- 1:45see here don't have running water, which
- 1:47means they often have to get their water
- 1:48from unclean sources that carry a lot of
- 1:51uncool diseases. So while you and I
- 1:53might take for granted that we could
- 1:54just pull a lever and effectively
- 1:56infinite clean water comes out from a
- 1:58faucet, two billion people don't have
- 2:00that luxury. So they need to get
- 2:02creative. In this case, by turning the
- 2:04entire ocean into their very own water
- 2:06tower. And I'm so glad they did cuz that
- 2:08meant when I tried the after cup that is
- 2:11crazy the difference.
- 2:13>> This tastes amazing. This tastes fresh.
- 2:15This was in the ocean less than 24 hours
- 2:16ago.
- 2:17>> It was.
- 2:17>> Wow. So like no fish poop.
- 2:19>> No fish poop. No colera
- 2:21>> giardia.
- 2:22>> No disentry. Nothing.
- 2:23>> Not even disentry. Now to understand how
- 2:25this was even possible. I built a
- 2:26simplified transparent version of their
- 2:28magic machine back at home and decided
- 2:30to put it to the ultimate test.
- 2:33>> Oh boy. Let's go. Oh no,
- 2:37I don't like the noise.
- 2:41>> He's got to turn it on.
- 2:42>> So if you pump out the dirty water from
- 2:44here, then after all this, a little bit
- 2:45of extra clean water should come out
- 2:47here. And to put my engineering money
- 2:48where my mouth is, I vowed I would drink
- 2:51that water.
- 2:51>> Hey, why am I even doing this?
- 2:53>> Two billion people in the world drink
- 2:54poison every single day. And we've got
- 2:56to do something about it.
- 2:57>> By the way, this is Hayes. He's the dude
- 2:59that founded Give Power. And he did it
- 3:01after making a pretty obvious
- 3:02observation. 73% of people in the world
- 3:05live in coastal communities. And so it
- 3:08seems ludicrous to me that we have these
- 3:09oceans with all this water yet 2 billion
- 3:11people lack access to it. Fresh,
- 3:13affordable water.
- 3:14>> So their trick to solve the problem is
- 3:16to mount reverse osmosis water filter
- 3:18systems and shipping containers, which
- 3:19not only makes them easy to ship, but
- 3:21now you can just plop the thing next to
- 3:23a large dirty water source, even in a
- 3:25totally remote location with no power,
- 3:28and you can make 70,000 L of water per
- 3:30day. Now, for some perspective, this is
- 3:33a half a liter of water
- 3:36and this is 70,000 L of water. That is
- 3:39how much ocean water is magically being
- 3:41transformed into fresh drinking water
- 3:43just in one location every single day.
- 3:46And it's all fully solar powered. So,
- 3:48with my digestive system on the line,
- 3:50it's worth explaining exactly how their
- 3:52magic machine works. Let's say you have
- 3:53two buckets, one with totally pure water
- 3:56and one that has a bunch of salt and
- 3:58gross stuff in it along with pure water.
- 4:00Well, if you connect them, then separate
- 4:01them with a barrier that has holes so
- 4:03small only tiny pure water molecules can
- 4:06get through, what you'll find is over
- 4:07time the pure water molecules all on
- 4:09their own will pass through those tiny
- 4:11holes in the barrier to spread out and
- 4:13hang out with more of their pure water
- 4:15molecule friends over here. In nature,
- 4:17that's called osmosis. Reverse osmosis
- 4:20is where we do that backwards. We apply
- 4:22a bunch of pressure to the dirty bucket
- 4:24and that basically squeezes any pure
- 4:27water molecules through that membrane
- 4:29while all the salt and other junk can't
- 4:31make it through. So, the good news is
- 4:33you've got all this fresh water. Bad
- 4:35news is there's one critical flaw. How
- 4:37do you deliver a swimming pool worth of
- 4:39fresh water every day when 96% of the
- 4:42houses don't have plumbing? And the
- 4:43answer is they give the water away for
- 4:45almost free. As you can see here with my
- 4:48buddy Mangala, he's the brains behind
- 4:50the local water delivery crew. But today
- 4:52that's delicious. I was the muscle. I
- 4:54got this.
- 4:56Mella, is it moving? How do you do this?
- 5:00Oh, we got it. Who knew selling water
- 5:02was so hard? I'm putting my back into
- 5:04it. Feel like I'm doing most of pushing
- 5:06here, Mangella. A fake pushing.
- 5:09Let's go.
- 5:11>> Okay, now your turn.
- 5:12>> I soon realized I was better off as the
- 5:14face of the operation.
- 5:16>> Who wants water? Mama. Mama. Maji.
- 5:19Where's our first customer? Maji fresh
- 5:2140 shillings.
- 5:24>> 20 20 20 shillings.
- 5:26>> Actually, I think I work best as the
- 5:27heart.
- 5:28>> At this point, I'm more about supporting
- 5:30emotionally. I can't imagine doing this
- 5:32seven times a day. But these guys are
- 5:34the water pipes delivering to the
- 5:36individual houses that don't have that
- 5:37infrastructure. So by selling the water
- 5:39at a discounted rate to the guys who
- 5:40come by with all the yellow jugs like
- 5:42Mangela, those human water pipes can
- 5:45then deliver the water for a small
- 5:46profit, incentivizing them to deliver as
- 5:48much as they can to those who need it.
- 5:50And this way all the money stays in
- 5:52their community. If they're not home, we
- 5:55could just leave it here, right?
- 5:57It's crazy that this fresh drinking
- 5:59water was just in the ocean yesterday
- 6:01and now it's in their house ready to use
- 6:03for anything. How many cans do you
- 6:05deliver a day?
- 6:06>> 100.
- 6:06>> 100. And you push all of them. I'm going
- 6:09to stick to making YouTube videos.
- 6:11Speaking of which,
- 6:12>> I can't believe I'm doing this for a
- 6:14stupid YouTube video.
- 6:15>> It seems to be working. Oh gosh.
- 6:17Actually, more is coming out than I
- 6:19anticipated. Backup cop. Hold on. You're
- 6:21sure this is going to work?
- 6:22>> Well, I didn't build it, but I believe
- 6:24the technology.
- 6:25>> Oh boy. It does look clear. That is a
- 6:27good sign. Moment of truth. I'm turning
- 6:29it off. That looks like pretty dang
- 6:31clear water. Oh boy. Smells like water.
- 6:35That's a good first sign. Why am I so
- 6:37nervous? Still smells like clean water.
- 6:40Now, to be fair, my only saving grace
- 6:41here is that 3 minutes and 59 seconds.
- 6:44Later in this video, Mr. Beast is going
- 6:45to have to do something very similar. Oh
- 6:47boy. Okay, here we go.
- 6:50>> Does that have to be a big sip?
- 6:51>> It's a gulp.
- 6:52>> It's a goal.
- 6:53>> Put it down.
- 6:54>> I never agreed to a goal.
- 6:55>> Be brave. Be bold. Believe in
- 6:57engineering. Believe in science. Believe
- 6:59in a better way.
- 7:05It tastes like very fresh water. That is
- 7:07incredible. From this, it just leeched
- 7:10out all the little pure water molecules.
- 7:14And now I'm feeling refreshed. So, at
- 7:16one location, you make 70,000 L a day.
- 7:18>> That's right. And everything we don't
- 7:20sell, we give away.
- 7:21>> Let's go. And this was actually my
- 7:23favorite part about everything they do.
- 7:25And it's something Ruthie mentioned when
- 7:26I got to write along for one of these
- 7:28deliveries. So we choose schools and
- 7:31hospitals and children's orphanages and
- 7:34we give all that water away.
- 7:36>> Hit it. The pump has started.
- 7:41>> Wow.
- 7:49And when speaking to the principal of
- 7:50one of those schools, the real impact of
- 7:52all this hit me.
- 7:55>> Okay, here we go. cuz ever since their
- 7:57school started getting clean water
- 7:59deliveries, hey,
- 8:00>> attendance has doubled because this is
- 8:02the only access to clean water they
- 8:04have.
- 8:04>> You want some more?
- 8:05>> And he said this means not only have so
- 8:07many of their stomach and health issues
- 8:08improved, but now they don't have to
- 8:10spend time every day fetching dirty
- 8:12water. So they have more time to attend
- 8:14school and invest in their future.
- 8:18And seeing these lovely fellow humans
- 8:20who despite living on the other side of
- 8:22the planet are so similar to us in so
- 8:24many ways find such joy and appreciation
- 8:26for a simple fresh glass of water was a
- 8:29good reminder of what can happen when
- 8:31the power of engineering is used for
- 8:33good even for something as basic as
- 8:35fresh clean water.
- 8:37>> Okay. So you want me to pour my pee in
- 8:40that bucket? That's right.
- 8:41>> Oh my gosh, this is gross.
- 8:42>> It's for science.
- 8:47All right, Jimmy. Well, thanks to the
- 8:49power of reverse osmosis, time has come.
- 8:51>> Oh my gosh.
- 8:52>> How you feeling?
- 8:53>> Um, if I taste any pee particles, I'm
- 8:55spitting this on you.
- 8:55>> How much do you believe in the science?
- 8:57>> Uh, you want just do it?
- 8:58>> No, no, no, no. Before Jimmy drinks
- 9:00this, if you're watching this video, we
- 9:02need your help getting water purifying
- 9:04systems like this to kids and people who
- 9:06need it all over the world. So, buckle
- 9:08up cuz the next 30 days are going to be
- 9:10crazy. You might remember 5 years ago
- 9:11when we did team trees and we raised $20
- 9:13million to plant 20 million trees. Huge
- 9:15success. So afterwards we did team seas.
- 9:17We raised $30 million to pull 30 million
- 9:19pounds of trash out of the ocean. Also
- 9:20huge success. Which brings us now here
- 9:22today to team water where we had the
- 9:24insane audacious goal to raise $40
- 9:27million to give 2 million people all
- 9:29around the world clean water for
- 9:30decades.
- 9:31>> That means on average every $1 we raise
- 9:33gives one human clean water for a year.
- 9:36>> What if I do 20 bucks?
- 9:37>> Bam. Now it will last 20 years. just
- 9:40using this machine.
- 9:41>> No. To scale this up and pull this off,
- 9:43we've been working with Water Aid
- 9:44because they're the best. They've been
- 9:45doing this for over 40 years. They've
- 9:47got a four-star charity navigator score,
- 9:49and they can make sure the clean water
- 9:50goes to 2 million people all across the
- 9:52world. But to do that, we need to raise
- 9:54$40 million, which truthfully me and
- 9:56Mark Robber can't do on our own, which
- 9:57is why we have all the biggest and
- 9:59smallest creators on every social media
- 10:00platform coming together to make content
- 10:02on Team Water to help us hit our $40
- 10:04million goal.
- 10:05>> I'm so excited for Team Water. I'm in
- 10:07for Team Water. Team Water. Team Water.
- 10:10Let's do this.
- 10:10>> So, join all your favorite creators on
- 10:12Team Water by watching and sharing all
- 10:14the Team Water content you see for the
- 10:15next month and then by heading to
- 10:17teamwater.org and giving as much as you
- 10:19can afford right now. With all the
- 10:20division and doom and gloom online
- 10:23today, this is one of those rare moments
- 10:25where we all get to push in the same
- 10:26direction and do something really
- 10:28meaningful. It's a chance to prove the
- 10:30best parts that make us humans still
- 10:31exist in abundance and that young people
- 10:34could be a catalyst for positive change
- 10:35in the world. I am so stoked. We totally
- 10:38got this. All right, Jimmy, no more
- 10:39stalling. Let's see it.
- 10:41>> Oh gosh.
- 10:42I'm just going to close my eyes.
- 10:44>> Oh, interesting.
- 10:47Yeah, tastes like clean water. #cience
