- 0:03[screaming]
- 0:05This is Millie Bobby Brown, actor,
- 0:07producer, child star turned global icon.
- 0:10Today we're at PS84 on the Upper West
- 0:12Side where she'll be subbing in for a
- 0:13school theater teacher teaching film
- 0:15acting to a class of second graders. But
- 0:17the best part is we'll be giving their
- 0:19drama program a muchneeded boost with
- 0:21brand new rehearsal mirrors, sets, and
- 0:22film equipment from Amazon. After today,
- 0:25Hollywood's going to want to keep an eye
- 0:26on this auditorium. I'm your host,
- 0:28Julian, and this is Celebrity
- 0:31Substitute. Millie, welcome to
- 0:32elementary school. How are you doing
- 0:34today?
- 0:34>> I am very good, thank you.
- 0:35>> What are you going to be teaching today?
- 0:37>> I am going to be teaching the only thing
- 0:39I know how to do, uh, film acting. I'm
- 0:42very excited considering I don't know my
- 0:46method.
- 0:46>> There's Stanislowski in acting.
- 0:48>> I have studied none of [music] it.
- 0:50>> There's Stella Adler. This is the MBB
- 0:52method,
- 0:53>> right? My own method. This is
- 0:55>> don't be afraid to look like an idiot
- 0:57because I think you know when I was
- 0:59younger I would do anything which is
- 1:01kind of how Eleven's power move like
- 1:03came to be because I just came [music]
- 1:04up with it on the spot but that could
- 1:06have I did
- 1:07>> oh wow that's so cool
- 1:08>> but that could have easily been an idiot
- 1:10thing to you know it could have been
- 1:11really embarrassing if they would have
- 1:12been like what are you
- 1:14>> the nose bleeding just happened? Yeah,
- 1:15exactly. That was just natural. But I
- 1:17started when I was 8 years old and I
- 1:19only started because I love doing it and
- 1:21it made me feel
- 1:22>> like I belong somewhere.
- 1:25>> Have you spent any time in American
- 1:27public elementary schools?
- 1:28>> Actually, yes. I went to elementary
- 1:31school. I had my own locker. Very
- 1:32American. I was cool automatically cuz I
- 1:35had an accent. I remember somebody
- 1:36saying to me, "Do they have apples in
- 1:39London?"
- 1:39>> They do.
- 1:40>> Do they have apples in London?
- 1:42>> Well, I wouldn't know. I was [laughter]
- 1:43like, "Apples in London?" I was like,
- 1:46"Yeah, they had I went home and my
- 1:47parents were like, yeah, Americans."
- 1:49>> Yeah, they don't [laughter] they don't.
- 1:50Is there anything you're worried about
- 1:52today?
- 1:52>> Yeah, I'm I'm honestly worried about
- 1:54that. I'm not going to give good advice.
- 1:55I don't want to knock anything out of
- 1:57them. Like, I'm here as a mom now.
- 2:00>> So, it's a different lens. I think
- 2:01honestly, maybe before my daughter, I
- 2:03probably would have been like, "All
- 2:05right, here's our boot camp." But I'm
- 2:06like, "I just want you to be who you
- 2:08are."
- 2:08>> Gentle parenting. [laughter] Gentle
- 2:09parenting.
- 2:10>> I just want you to be loved and
- 2:11supported. My daughter is like the apple
- 2:14of my eye. Like I just [music]
- 2:16>> And you have apples.
- 2:18>> I do. Right.
- 2:18>> We have apples in London. Yeah. So yeah,
- 2:20it definitely it gives you different
- 2:22perspective. Like I always understood
- 2:24where my parents and what they were
- 2:25talking about, but now I deeply
- 2:27understand what they're [music] talking
- 2:28about.
- 2:29>> Okay. Oh my god, I haven't seen
- 2:31[laughter] that.
- 2:32>> I'm scared.
- 2:34Oh,
- 2:35>> is this from yesterday? [laughter]
- 2:37>> Serious. I was 8 years old. Yeah,
- 2:40>> this is an intense look.
- 2:42>> You know what's funny is I just see 11
- 2:44because I [music] just I don't know. I
- 2:46associate so much of my childhood with
- 2:48that.
- 2:49>> Okay,
- 2:50>> look at her. Oh,
- 2:52>> I was in Spain. I must have been like 3
- 2:54or 4 years old. Yeah. At this point, I'm
- 2:57singing every song of like Hannah
- 2:59Montana, That's So Raven.
- 3:01>> Were you a behaved child?
- 3:04>> Talk me through that misbehavior. My mom
- 3:06said to me the other day, just
- 3:07unironically, she was like, "I stopped
- 3:09reading books after you were born."
- 3:11>> What does that mean?
- 3:12>> Exactly. Do you know what I mean? It's
- 3:14like, "I stopped doing things after you
- 3:16were born."
- 3:16>> Cuz you took up so much space.
- 3:18>> Yeah. You would come in the room, I
- 3:20would sing a song, I would shush
- 3:21everyone, reenter everyone. Hey, I'm
- 3:24over here. And I would make everyone
- 3:26judge me like American Idol.
- 3:27>> Can I tell you what we're doing for the
- 3:28kids today?
- 3:29>> Yes.
- 3:30>> Okay. So basically PS84 puts on a play
- 3:32every year, but their arts program runs
- 3:33on very limited resources. So we brought
- 3:36in rehearsal mirrors, set pieces,
- 3:37costumes, and film equipment, all from
- 3:39Amazon to help their program reach its
- 3:40full potential for years to come.
- 3:42>> Love it.
- 3:43>> Are you ready for your official
- 3:44celebrity substitute [music] name tag?
- 3:46>> Yes.
- 3:50>> Are you ready to meet the kids?
- 3:51>> So ready.
- 3:52>> Let's do it. Come on.
- 3:53>> Millie may have been a child actor, but
- 3:55let's find out if she has what it takes
- 3:56to direct a group of New York City
- 3:58second graders. All right, Millie. Your
- 4:012 hours start now, KIDS. COME ON IN.
- 4:05>> Y [screaming]
- 4:08>> HELLO.
- 4:08>> HI, CHILDREN. Meet your celebrity
- 4:10substitute, Miss Millie.
- 4:11>> HI.
- 4:13>> HI. I'm Miss Millie, and I'm going to
- 4:15teach you acting for film today.
- 4:19>> That's my reaction. Do you like acting?
- 4:22[screaming]
- 4:22>> Yeah.
- 4:23>> So, we're going to get into all that
- 4:25very soon, but before we do, who wants
- 4:27to ask a question?
- 4:29Okay. Harley.
- 4:31>> Harley.
- 4:32>> Harley.
- 4:33>> Anyways, um Oh, what was your first job?
- 4:36>> I was in a commercial for a hotel.
- 4:41>> What was your first job, Harley?
- 4:42>> My first and only job that I'm doing
- 4:44right now is acting
- 4:46>> because I'm in a play right now.
- 4:48>> Exactly. You are not trying to be an
- 4:50actor. You are an actor.
- 4:52>> Harley already knows a thing or two
- 4:54about the craft. Acting is where you
- 4:56pretend to do something. Like for
- 4:59example, if someone tells you to ride a
- 5:01roller coaster and acting, it means you
- 5:03have to pretend to ride a roller
- 5:05coaster. Like woo, something like that.
- 5:08>> What is your favorite emotion?
- 5:12>> I would have to say [laughter]
- 5:15I would have to say happiness and joy.
- 5:19That's my favorite. What's your
- 5:20favorite?
- 5:20>> Happy.
- 5:21>> Yeah, me too. Have you ever broken a leg
- 5:24before?
- 5:24>> I actually broke my kneecap once.
- 5:28>> Yeah, I know, right? I was probably 14
- 5:31years old and I was working on a show
- 5:35called Stranger Things.
- 5:36>> Oh,
- 5:38>> the Stranger Things main character. I
- 5:39saw her in person. I know she's not
- 5:41real, right?
- 5:42>> I had to wear a full leg brace and I put
- 5:45my costume over it and I would limp like
- 5:47this onto set.
- 5:48>> How did you break? If you feel
- 5:50comfortable, sharing.
- 5:51>> It's a long story, [singing] but I think
- 5:54I fell by the pool. So, don't run by the
- 5:55pool. OKAY.
- 5:56>> DON'T RUN BY THE POOL.
- 5:58>> There we go. There we go.
- 5:59>> We're already learning.
- 6:00>> I'm teaching you more than just acting
- 6:02here. Chloe,
- 6:03>> are you a zombie?
- 6:04>> Am I a zombie?
- 6:05>> Yeah,
- 6:05>> I can be.
- 6:08>> I don't want a zombie teacher, though.
- 6:10>> Okay. I'm human right now, but if you
- 6:12don't do as I say, I can turn into a
- 6:14zombie.
- 6:15>> Um, where do you live?
- 6:17>> Address.
- 6:20Who do you work for? Daily Mail son. Who
- 6:23is it?
- 6:24>> THERE'S SOMETHING CALLED PRIVACY.
- 6:26>> BORING. [screaming]
- 6:27[laughter]
- 6:28>> I live in the United States of America,
- 6:31but I live in multiple different places.
- 6:33>> I'm a traveler.
- 6:34>> I would like to live in Cartahena.
- 6:36>> Where is that?
- 6:37>> It's in Colombia.
- 6:38>> Oh, that's very cool.
- 6:40>> Why do you want to live in Cartaha?
- 6:42>> Because there's a lot of pools there and
- 6:43it's really hot.
- 6:44>> Yeah. But guess what? We don't do around
- 6:46pools.
- 6:47>> Don't run. EXACTLY. [laughter] FULL
- 6:50CIRCLE.
- 6:50>> UM, are you married?
- 6:52>> I am. Are you married?
- 6:55>> No, I have a kid.
- 6:57>> Meet Lev. He's had a big week.
- 6:59>> This Monday, I got a PAL expander. A pal
- 7:02expander is a metal object that will go
- 7:06in like in your mouth and then it will
- 7:09expand your teeth to make more space for
- 7:11new ones.
- 7:12>> Who wants to be married? Who doesn't
- 7:13want to be married? Married. Wait, wait,
- 7:15Joseph, you want to be married so bad.
- 7:17Why do you want to be married?
- 7:18>> I want to be married because like I want
- 7:21to have someone I can hang out with like
- 7:23all the time. Just one more thing to
- 7:25say. If I could marry someone, I would
- 7:27marry Miss Millie.
- 7:31[laughter]
- 7:34>> Because she's SO BEAUTIFUL. [screaming]
- 7:37>> This here is Joseph and he's a romantic.
- 7:40>> Millie is very beautiful.
- 7:43She's very kind. I love her.
- 7:48I want to marry her and that's maybe it.
- 7:51Yeah.
- 7:52>> Thank you so much, Joseph. You're going
- 7:54to find a sweet, lovely girl. And
- 7:56hopefully her name is Millie one day.
- 7:59That would be even better, right?
- 8:00>> Is there anybody want to share why they
- 8:01really don't want to get married? It's
- 8:03>> too much work. It costs too much money.
- 8:06And if I get divorced, then there's so
- 8:09much paper and I have no time if I'm
- 8:11going to have kids.
- 8:12>> Um, [applause] are you married?
- 8:15>> Not yet. Not yet. You have a girlfriend.
- 8:18>> WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, WHOA.
- 8:20[screaming]
- 8:20>> I THINK IT'S TIME TO START. I THINK IT'S
- 8:21TIME TO START THE LESSON, GUYS. WHO'S
- 8:23READY?
- 8:23>> START THE LESSON. And we're rolling.
- 8:26Quiet on set.
- 8:26>> All right, everyone. Are you listening?
- 8:28>> Yeah.
- 8:29>> Okay. I'm going to say things one time.
- 8:30I won't repeat myself. So, open your
- 8:32ears. Okay. Today, I'm teaching film
- 8:36acting. First, I'm going to ask you, do
- 8:38you know some film vocabulary words?
- 8:41Things that we use on sets. Does anyone
- 8:43know what action means,
- 8:46>> Harley?
- 8:47>> It's something that directors usually
- 8:50say before starting um starting a girl.
- 8:53Scene one, take place. Action.
- 8:57>> That was amazing. Next terminology. What
- 9:01does your mark mean?
- 9:03>> What?
- 9:03>> Your mark.
- 9:04>> I think that's where you start.
- 9:06>> Yes. So, this right here, you see this
- 9:08little piece of tape on the ground?
- 9:10>> Yeah.
- 9:10>> This is called your mark. But in my
- 9:13accent, I'm saying Mark. But actually,
- 9:15in your accent, it would be Mark.
- 9:17>> Harley, [snorts] I didn't say your name
- 9:18wrong earlier. It's my [music] accent.
- 9:21But I can say Harley if it makes you
- 9:22[laughter] more comfortable.
- 9:24>> She's so British. I can smell her
- 9:25accent.
- 9:27>> My name is Mille. And your name is
- 9:29Harley.
- 9:30>> So, I'm standing on my mark. This is my
- 9:32mark. This is the bare minimum of what
- 9:34we need to show up and do, okay? Every
- 9:37day. All righty. I'm going to sit back
- 9:39down cuz I'm tired. The last word is
- 9:42points. Points means something heavy is
- 9:45uh IS COMING.
- 9:46>> POINTS. POINTS.
- 9:47>> SO, WE have to move out the way. Okay.
- 9:50That's what people do on set. So, if you
- 9:52hear points, what are we going to do?
- 9:54>> Move out the way.
- 9:56>> Are you You guys are in a play right
- 9:57now, right?
- 9:58>> Yeah.
- 9:59>> Okay. So, theater acting is very
- 10:01different because it's bigger. You have
- 10:04to speak to a larger crowd. But in film
- 10:07acting, it can be a bit different. And
- 10:09sometimes you want to be more subtle and
- 10:11make smaller choices, right? So today
- 10:14I'm going to teach you how to do some of
- 10:17those things.
- 10:17>> Who wants to make a face like they know?
- 10:20They know a secret or their secret. Le,
- 10:22do you want to go?
- 10:23>> Are you thinking of a secret that you
- 10:24know?
- 10:25>> Yeah.
- 10:26>> Okay. You're going to stare at that
- 10:27camera and when I say action, you're
- 10:30going to do your performance and
- 10:33action.
- 10:37Okay. A little less theater. A little
- 10:39more.
- 10:40>> This is so hard.
- 10:42>> Just say it with your eyes to the
- 10:43camera.
- 10:45[laughter]
- 10:46>> That was really great laugh. I think
- 10:48that we should try it now. Like somebody
- 10:51just told you kind of good news, but
- 10:53you're kind of conflicted on how to feel
- 10:54about it. Action.
- 11:00>> Can you look away? And I want you to
- 11:01look at the camera with a death stare.
- 11:05>> Ooh. Oh,
- 11:06>> I feel that.
- 11:07>> That was amazing.
- 11:09>> Yes.
- 11:10>> Okay. Who thinks they can cry on
- 11:13command? Joseph, please face that camera
- 11:15right there and cry.
- 11:21>> It's getting there.
- 11:24>> Stay in it. [music]
- 11:26>> What are you thinking about, Joseph?
- 11:29>> I don't know. Well, nothing.
- 11:32>> Crying. You didn't get ice cream or you
- 11:34didn't get that audition for that thing
- 11:37you really wanted.
- 11:40[music]
- 11:42>> Joseph,
- 11:43>> it's it's very close.
- 11:45>> Let Let him Let him Let him cook. Let
- 11:47him cook. Let him cook. Let him cook.
- 11:48Let him cook. [laughter]
- 11:52>> Oh. Oh. [music] We've We've been moved
- 11:54to
- 11:54>> Oh my god. Wait. Wait. Prince. Prince
- 11:57Joseph, please. Prince.
- 12:02>> [laughter]
- 12:03>> Prince, what? Prince, what happened?
- 12:07>> I just stared.
- 12:09>> Yeah, I just stared. Like, I'm going to
- 12:12stare right now.
- 12:14[music]
- 12:19>> One hour later.
- 12:21>> And that's how I cry.
- 12:24Now that we've learned the basics and
- 12:25rehearsed with Miss Millie, it's time to
- 12:26get on our feet and do some scene work
- 12:28with our brand new sets and rehearsal
- 12:30props from Amazon. So, before we
- 12:32actually get into acting in front of the
- 12:34camera, can I show you what we got for
- 12:36your school?
- 12:37>> Drapes.
- 12:43>> So, we got you all these sets [music]
- 12:45and a whole bunch of other stuff that
- 12:47you can keep and use to make plays, film
- 12:49things. It's going to be a lot of fun.
- 12:51So, here's the scene. You two are a
- 12:54married couple, but your wedding ring
- 12:58went missing and he thinks that your
- 13:02exboyfriend has it.
- 13:04>> I hate this already.
- 13:05>> But that's the thing, Prince. Do you
- 13:06understand my whole career? Sometimes I
- 13:08hate things, too. Do you think I wanted
- 13:1011 to die at the end?
- 13:12>> Wait, when the 11 died at the end, was
- 13:14that fake or real?
- 13:16>> I don't know.
- 13:17>> You're going to stand there. Here is
- 13:19your detective gear. So, the cool thing
- 13:21is I play a detective in my next movie.
- 13:24>> Oh, what is it?
- 13:25>> My name is Nola Holmes.
- 13:28>> Nola Holmes.
- 13:29>> Exactly.
- 13:30>> Related to
- 13:31>> Sherlock Holmes.
- 13:32>> Yes. But guess what? She doesn't need
- 13:34her big brother. She's a detective in
- 13:36her own right.
- 13:37>> Girl power.
- 13:39>> That's right. [screaming]
- 13:40>> So, you are three best friends on a
- 13:42sleepover. And you're going to be
- 13:44telling scary stories. [screaming]
- 13:49SO THIS IS a romcom. So it's like a
- 13:53romantic comedy film.
- 13:56>> Oh,
- 13:58>> buddy. Right. This is your closeup.
- 14:00>> You don't move. You bump and then you
- 14:02just go down. And Chloe, you bump and
- 14:03you just go down. Does that make sense?
- 14:05>> So we don't drop our books.
- 14:07>> You You do. You bump drop books, but
- 14:08then you just go down.
- 14:12>> Bump bump.
- 14:15Oh, acting is very actually easier than
- 14:19it looks.
- 14:22>> In Manola Homes 3, only on Netflix,
- 14:24[music] I play a detective, which we did
- 14:26earlier, but I also play a lady. My name
- 14:29is Lady Tukspree. I have an accent, a
- 14:32British accent. So, I think in this
- 14:33[music] scene today, you guys should
- 14:35both do British accents, which is my
- 14:37accent. Hello.
- 14:38>> Hello.
- 14:39>> May I have some tea?
- 14:41>> May I have some tea?
- 14:44>> Thank you.
- 14:45Thank you.
- 14:46>> Lewon, here are some more props you can
- 14:48use.
- 14:49>> HEY. [laughter]
- 14:52[screaming]
- 14:54>> All right, Millie, your time is up.
- 14:57Let's showcase our scenes.
- 14:59>> Hi, Noel. Noel. Um, my my wife lost her
- 15:04ring and I can't find it anywhere. It's
- 15:07a sweet unfortunate disaster.
- 15:10>> Can you help us? Well, firstly, my name
- 15:14is Anola.
- 15:15>> Sorry. Sorry. I'm I'm really messed up.
- 15:17>> Before we get any further, how much are
- 15:19you willing to offer me?
- 15:21>> $100.
- 15:24>> 10,000 if you may.
- 15:25>> I need to speak with Noah in um [snorts]
- 15:29in private. Of course, dear.
- 15:31>> Listen, I think her exboyfriend tickets.
- 15:35>> I don't know what I'm going to do. Hi,
- 15:38I'm ex-boyfriend. I understand that you
- 15:41have some questions for me.
- 15:42>> There's been some serious accusations
- 15:45that you might have stolen
- 15:49>> somebody's ring.
- 15:50>> Oh, you mean this ring?
- 15:51>> Oh, was it was it just on the ground?
- 15:53>> Yeah.
- 15:54>> Oh, case closed.
- 16:00>> Huh? Are you reading Dinosaurs ABC?
- 16:03That's my favorite book.
- 16:04>> Are you reading Chica Chica Boom Boo?
- 16:07That's my favorite book. We have so much
- 16:10in common.
- 16:11>> Chloe, come on. We've got
- 16:13>> Joseph, come on. We have some swim
- 16:14lessons. Come on.
- 16:14>> Yeah. Sorry.
- 16:15>> Oh. Hey. Hey. Um,
- 16:18you you babysitter around here?
- 16:20>> Yeah. Yeah. Chloe.
- 16:22>> Uh, Julian.
- 16:23>> Millie. Nice to meet you.
- 16:25>> Oh, where where are you guys off to?
