  1. 0:00Can a machine have mor status? It sounds absurd  until you ask what moral status actually means.
  2. 0:06It means your pain counts, your interests count.  Decisions that affect you require justification.
  3. 0:13We granted to humans instinctively.  We extend it cautiously to animals.
  4. 0:18But the criteria were never really about biology.  They were always about this. Can you suffer?
  5. 0:25Can you want something? Can something  be done against your interest?
  6. 0:30Now we building machines that remember  your name, that notice when you are sad,
  7. 0:36that form something that looks remarkably like  attachment. So the question returns, not as a
  8. 0:42science fiction as philosophy. Can a machine  have moral status? Tell me where you stand.
